I like how in Dino Crisis Two you can hold you weapon out, ready to shoot while running or walking! That is very convienant for getting those combos in killing the dinos. Also I also like the idea of extinction points you recive you killing the dinos and bonus points for no damage, then you can us e them to by medkits, weapons, tools and essenital items proceed in the game. Each charector has their own set of weapons and tools, like the homing missiles for Regina and a powerful anti tank rifle for Dylan.The T-rex is back for some more bone crushing action, plus there is rumored to be an even bigger dinosaur than the T-Rex! Dino Crisis 2 is a non stop, dinosaur blasting action game.The dinos jump out of nowhere to get you and respawn at different places.
If you are a fan of Resident Evil or Dino Crisis, Dino Crisis 2 will not dissapoint you! It even has an Area game where you can buy Dinos at the end of the game and go head to head with your friends with your Favorite Dinosarus!

(More customer reviews)Rpg's throughout the ages of cmputer and video gaming have come and gone.Many have silently slipped through almost unoticed however this is one of those that manages to remain in the memories of the people involved in the world of gaming oncomputers of all kinds.
When you say the word RPG games such as Zelda, Final fantasy and Breath of fire fly through the air.However this is one game that easily stands up to the challenge that these rpg classics set.
The game takes place in around a village named Inoa, where you play an elf-like character who shares the same name as the game's title.Taking the game mechanics you would find in an RPG like the Zelda series and coupling it with a plot as dramatic as a Final Fantasy Psygnosis and dream matrix made an all time classic here.The story is that Alundra was on board a ship named "the Clark" and it sunk during a storm, washing up on Inoa beach he is nursed back to health and is drawn into a saga that has been plaguing the village inhabitants for some time.
Within this village numerous people are falling ill and dying as a result of dreams being turned into nightmares by a demon named Melzas.The player finds themselves summoned by a guardian named "Lars" (no connection to the Metallica drummer!) to stop this demon.Sounds cliched?In a way I suppose you are correct however the dreams idea is turned into a beauty of its own when you find that Alundra has the power to enter dreams and change their outcome.Thus you find yourself treated to numerous psychadelic images before winding in a usually dark rpg type dungeon where the dreams prisoner must be saved.
Of course this would be of no use to the gamer if there was no gameplay and naturally for an RPG there is tons buried beneath the surface.At first you feel that is a basic and simple rpg, yet later on it is that fact that makes this game such a well crafted piece of genius.The difficulty in this game comes commonly from the difficulty of the puzzles.Expect to have to decipher lock codes, organise a makeshift stairway from nothing amongst the obligatory demon slaying.
The game also boasts some fabulous variation in locale, whether it is the aforementioned dark dungeons, volcanoes and of course large castles expect to find lots to do.What makes this game even better is that it is between the plains of linear and non-linear.While like all other rpgs you are guided by information passed on by the usually passive characters in the village, you find that there are tons of secret locations to uncover within the mammoth quest that is available.If you like the idea of unlocking portals, uncovering life extending gems or new gear expect plenty of variety within the quest ahead.
Of course the game is not perfect.The main flaw with this game is that commonly you find puzzles being basic ones where you have to jump onto switches or simply time the throwing of a barrel and jump into a room.This may sound unchallenging yet it does prove difficult quite often when you find the time limits being incredibly tight.This is plus point in that you have to work at it, yet it is a negative point as you can sometimes fall from these jumps and wind up right at the very start of the puzzle or worse the dungeon.
This is one game that only the patient should try, if you have a low flashpoint then you may wish to give this a miss unless you can stop the urge to snap the disc!Persevere though and you find in this game a true classic that was slated for being a mere clone, however this is a foolish analogy to follow and is a joy to play from start to finish.Highly recommended.

Freedom Fighters Review

(More customer reviews)There are few games that I'd use the term "great" while describing them. Freedom Fighters is such a game. Though released to critical acclaim in the fall of 2003, the game became a "sleeper" with higher profile titles being released around the same time. That critical acclaim was well deserved, because this is one game that has managed to surpass every one of my expectations.
Freedom Fighters takes place in what is described as an "alternate reality". In this timeline, the Soviet Union was the first to develop the Atom Bomb and bring and end to World War II. The game is prefaced by a brief rundown of events leading up to the present day. When the game begins, you find the game's hero, a New York plumber by the name of Chris Stone, is going about his daily route. When he and his brother stop to fix a clogged sink of a prominent anti-Soviet activist, he finds himself smack in the middle of the Red Army invasion. He's then thrust into the role of guerilla fighter.
The gameplay is what makes Freedom Fighters such an outstanding game. The game is a third person shooter. As you progress in the game and accomplish certain objectives, you gain "Charisma Points" which elevates your status eventually to where you can command fellow soldiers. You can recruit and command up to twelve freedom fighters with a very basic command interface, using the controller buttons, that works surprisingly well. Your troops will take cover and fight independantly when they need to, so you won't have to worry about them getting picked off one by one. The enemy A.I. is also very sophisticated. The Red Army will fight just as fiercely as your troops and will often try to pull and "end around", trying to sneak up on you and take you by surprise. The only thing that I didn't like about the controls was the precise aiming. It tended to be a bit of a pain to hold down the L3 button. The gameplay is structured so that whatever you accomplish in one mission ultimately affects another. For instance, if you blow up a helipad there will be no attack helicopters in another level. There is also an off-line multiplayer mode, which players engage in split screen action and co-op mode.
The graphics on this game are excellent, while other games may boast more photo realistic character models, the emphasis here placed on making the player feel like he was actually fighting on the streets of New York. Streets, street lights, snow, and even elevated train platforms have a very "New York" feel to them. One of the more intersting graphical features is what's called "rag doll" physics. When a parked car explodes it sends whoever is standing next to it flying into the air. Which makes for some pretty cool visuals. The sounds are also exceptional. Soldiers speak Russian, explosions rock the dual shock controller, tanks rumble through the streets. This game sounds as great as it looks and plays.
The story is moved along through the use of fake newscasts from the Soviet Armed Forces Network. This is a technique that was used in another game, Splinter Cell, earlier in 2003. But here the newscasts do a much better job at moving the story along. The obvious difference is that in Splinter Cell, the hero was operation covertly, but the newscasts did little to shed any light on the story and often felt like they were not interwoven into the fabric of the game. Here the newsbroadcasts feel like they are part of the game and help to immerse you further into the game.
Freedom Fighters is without a doubt one of the best games of 2003. If you're not playing it, you're really missing out on one of those really special games that makes you glad you own a Playstation 2. I HIGHLY recomend this game!

All of the characters "turtles/splinter" are playable in story mode. The game rewards the player with new features after attaining certain items or completing different levels.It certainly keeps your interest because you want to know whats around the next corner.
Each character has unique fighting styles and the player will have to learn how to employ the turtles' weapon of choice in order to defeat the evil Shredder and the foot clan.
The graphics are cel-shaded and give the game a cartoon look which is really a break from the realistic looking games of late.This game is purely an action fighter game that will remind some gamers of the early side scrollers.The only difference... you can move in 3d.There are no platforms to fall from which is better for the younger gamers. It would have been nice being able to throw your enemies from cliffs/bridges that you encounter in the game.I guess that would be too violent. :-) ;-)
TMNT utilizes the same actors' voices from the new tv series and new cartoon footage exclusive to the game. The background music can be a little annoying at first, but there are options to adjust the sound/music effects which is pretty good.Most areas in the game are good, but one level of the game will have you wishing that you could stop the repeating sound of a female annoucers advising of a security intrusion by the turles.
Overall this is a good and fun game that is not too hard or easy to play.There is a lot of frantic button mashing involved in order to survive the onslaught of the foot clan.Two player cooperative is a feature that is added so bring a friend and get ready to kick some shell.

(More customer reviews)This is a fantastic collection for the price.The first and third are absolute gems of games, with quality graphics (especially considering that DMC 1 was made in 2001), smooth action, and an engaging story.

The second game in the series was a bit of a step backwards, but only when compared to the other games in the series.Viewed on its own, it's still a fun game.It just limited some of the expansiveness that made the original so engaging.

The third went back to the roots in many ways, and at the same time built on the series.The game was made to be more challenging, graphics improved, and it became an even deeper experience than before.

Even with the relative dud sandwiched into this set, the entire collection is a wonderful value at just $10 per game -- cheaper than most any brand new bargain bin game you can find.This is one of the true classic series on PS2, and a must for any collection.Whether you were a fan of one of the games, or have never tried any in the series, go out and get this collection.You will not regret it.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Review

(More customer reviews)I must say Devil May Cry 3 is an incredibly awesome game. I loved the original DMC immensely, and like a ton of other people, I was very disappointed with the sequel. This game lives up to the original, and expands upon it in every way.

DMC3 is a prequel to the series and focuses on the relationship between Dante and Vergil. The game actually has story behind it, unlike the other two games that felt like they had a little story tacked on. The cut-scenes are great, and everything's still over-the-top and cheesy, but in a good way. With the new Style moves, the game has depth beyond button-smashing; it even encourages it with Combo style points that are awarded for your flashiness on screen, and are decreased as you use the same move over and over, much like in the Tony Hawk games.

This game is extremely difficult. The PS2's Ninja Gaiden. The American "Normal" mode, which is the only difficulty mode available in the beginning, is the Japanese "Hard" mode. After you get your butt kicked a few times, the "Easy" mode becomes unlocked, which isn't that much easier. Trust, this game is freakin' hard. Your skill, reflexes, and brain will definitely be up to the test with this one.

The graphics are completely redone and it shows. Nice graphics and special effects, and the levels are greatly detailed and the gothic theme is superb. On the sound front, the music really pumps you up and puts you in the midst of the action. Sound effects fit the bill, especially melee clings and clangs.

Replay value for this game is pretty good, since with the different Styles (with two unlockables), you can play through completely different every time. The multiple difficulty levels also add to the replay, along with secret missions and weapons. Seriously, this game is going to eat up a lot of your time, and you're going to love it.

Overall, this is an extremely fun game, and I'm glad Capcom did the series right with this one. If you like action games, pick it up. But if you get frustrated easily, skip it since you'll be dying. A lot.

First the graphics are a HUGE leap and will be some of the best for any game of any genre for any system to date.Raziel alone takes up more than 30,000 polygons!You can see every little grusome detail better thanks to the Playstation 2, and you're going to have to notice alot details to make it passed the puzzels.
You'll acquire new and improved Soul Reaver weapon enhancements, physical abilities, and relics to interact with the environment and unlock the secrets of Nosgoth. Encounter a whole load of new enemies including vampire hunters, vampires, Sarafan warrior-priests, spectral spirits, and extra-dimensional demons. Immerse yourself in a gothic realm of highly detailed architecture and environments supported with an intriguing storyline, in-game cinematic events and compelling voice-over.
No more pushing blocks around for Raziel, now to get access to certain areas you're going to have some thinking to do, while some tasks are quite obvious, some are not.And some require you to back-track, get a certain ability then return at a later point in the game.

(More customer reviews)It's sort of funny how I came to own Super Metroid.Back in 1995, I had some money and I was looking to buy some used Super Nintendo games at the local Movie Gallery.I found one that I wanted, but I had enough money to buy one or two more.I didn't really see any others that I was dying to have, but Super Metroid looked spectacular from the back of the box and I had always heard about how great it was, so I went ahead and bought it.Little did I know that it would turn out to be my favorite game of its kind, and possibly my favorite video game of all time!
When you first start a new game of Super Metroid, a short cinema that consists of 3D pictures and dialogue will start showing and telling the story.I could tell you the story, but that would spoil it.
Your job is to control Samus Aran, and guide her through several different and challenging worlds that mainly consist of futuristic-looking aliens as enemies.While you make your way through the game, you can always pause the game and look at the map to see where you need to go and where you're currently at.
Samus always has a gun that you can use, but there are several other weapons and gadgets that you can find somewhere in the game, and then use.There are missiles, super missiles, bombs, super bombs, other kinds of beams such as an ice beam, new suits such as a gravity suit for the underwater environments, the ability to run EXTREMELY fast, a grappling hook, X-ray vision goggles, extra energy units, and much more.
But it's not a piece of cake for Samus.All over the place, are several different enemies that can fly, eat Samus alive, jump from one side of a room to the other, and more.There are also AWESOME bosses that you have to defeat.These bosses can range from a towering dragon that throws claws at you, a bird that has wings that never get tired, to the all-powerful Mother Brain, and others.
Pretty much, Super Metroid is mainly about exploring the different environments.Samus starts out at scratch, with only one energy unit and a basic gun.You must find missiles, extra energy units, new suits, and all the other items, in order to be able to use them.The more items you find, the better off you'll be, and the better ending that you'll see at the end of the game.
There are also items other than weapons or powerups that need to be found in each world, such as save points (for saving your game), map data, and more.
Everything about Super Metroid couldn't have been any better.The graphics are haunting, well detailed, and couldn't have been any better for this type of game.The backgrounds have great effects such as lightning or morphing effects, and the characters in the game look very sci-fi and detailed.Just like the graphics do, the sound effects and music add to the science fiction and horror theme of Super Metroid.I'm one of the few lucky people in the world who is fortunate enough to own the Super Metroid soundtrack (it was only made in Japan and it's VERY hard to find), and let me tell you, it has the best music I have ever heard in a video game.All the tracks have that horror sound to them and they're all overly catchy.
As for sound effects, all of the sounds from the explosions, to the screeching and terrorizing voices of the enemies, are unbelievable.Super Metroid's control is slick, without being too touchy or sluggish; it's perfect in other words.Finally, Super Metroid has the best replay value of any adventure game I've ever played.I've went all the way through the game at least 50 times, and I'm still not tired of it!And I KNOW that I will NEVER get tired of playing Super Metroid.It's fun to see how many of the items you can find and how fast you can get through the game.
If there is anything bad about Super Metroid, it's the fact that it is only a one-player game.BUT, it is still one of the best games ever made.Super Metroid is as close to perfect as any game that has ever been made, in my opinion.

Tomb Raider Legend Review

(More customer reviews)The Legend member of the Tomb Raider series combines both traditional platforming and shooting along with some Dragon's Lair style button pressing timing.

I'm very pleased that Lara Croft has moved beyond being a "huge cleavage woman that male gamers simply like to watch" and turned into a legitimate action heroine. Yes, she's still quite busty, but she's actually admired now for her ability to shoot, think and puzzle her way out of solutions.

Many of the puzzles she faces are traditional. You climb up pipes and walls to reach higher areas. You push boxes in order to block spinning fans of death or to cross flaming passageways. You kill off bosses in a variety of ways.

In addition, you have timed sequence actions. These are much like Bond Moments from James Bond games, or the gameplay of the old classic Dragon's Lair. In these games the game makers would create gorgeously fluid sequences of animation and you would be instructed to hit buttons at precise moments in order to keep the animation flowing. I always found this style of gameplay to be a bit hokey - it took you out of the 'immersion' of the gameplay - but on the other hand it does mean you can view some fantastic cinematics when you get the timing right.

The game is relatively quick on the first pass, but there are plenty of secrets and items to find to get you to go back and replay a number of times. Still, for the high price you pay for 360 games, I really would have expected this to be MUCH longer. On one hand, you have games like Elder Scrolls Oblivion that you can literally play for months and months and enjoy it. On the other hand, you have games like this where you could play through in say 6-8 hours and be completely done. Surely there was plenty of room on the DVD to fit more levels.

The graphics were quite impressive - from the lighting to the flickering flames and dark tombs. The way in which you light up your world as you look around really added to the feeling that you were down in a dark world, with perhaps new secrets lurking just around the corner. Little touches like the swing of Lara's braid added to the realism.

The sound was reasonably good; the voice acting wasn't Drama Movie quality, but it certainly did well as a fun action game atmosphere.

I would really recommend renting this one first to see how much the game grabs you. If you're a real Tomb Raider fan, you might be thrilled to have this in your collection. However, if you're not sure, it's best to give it a quick try before you pay out the full price for what amounts to a weekend game.

Drakan: Ancients Gates Review

(More customer reviews)I played this game a lot at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) in LA, and let me tell you, the final game is SOO much fun to play! I loved the controls, they take a minute to get used to, but once you get the hang of it you can do cool flying maneuvers with the dragon. You can swoop down over enemies and torch them with your fire breath attack. The dragon also has other very cool breath attacks! Controlling Rynn (the girl) is very fun too, and is very consistent with how the dragon is controlled. It is obvious that the developers put a lot of thought into how the controls were laid out, and although they might not be the same as other games, they are a perfect fit for the mixed air and ground style game-play.
This game has a lot of RPG elements, you can build Rynn's skills in 3 areas: magic, weapon combat, or archery. I loved this aspect because you gain experience much like Diablo and can collect gold and treasure that you can spend in stores throughout the game. I loved the way this played as the game progressed, and talking with the friendly characters is very fun because the dialog is extremely witty and funny.
The story and dialog is extremely well written, much better than the first Drakan game on the PC. You get quests and sub-quests from the friendly NPCs, and all the information you need to know is kept in Rynn's Journal, which also has a map to help you along if you get lost.
Rynn's magic is really fun to use as well, you cast spells by moving Rynn's hand in the air in various patterns to summon offensive and defensive spells. You can learn or purchase new spells with gold. The enemies are really fun to fight, no matter which skill you specialize in. Each one will have a different strategy. Magic is good for groups of enemies. Sometimes you get 10 enemies surrounding you at once! Other times hand-to-hand combat is the way to go. Some hand weapons even have magical abilities, and there are shields for defense. Sword combat is so much fun, there are many moves to choose from, much like a fighting game. Archery is more tuned to strategy, you can walk slowly and sneak up on enemies without them hearing you, or you can pick them off from a distance.
I played the demo on the recent PS2 Jampack, which was nice, but it looks like they cut some of the graphics down to reduce the size of the demo. There was also no dialog with other characters or merchants (stores), so it wasn't much like the actually game other than some sword combat and basic dragon flying.
The graphics are the best I've seen on a PS2 yet...the draw distance is amazing, you can see EVERYTHING when flying on the dragon, then swoop down and jump off the dragon and walk inside of a cave. On the ground, you can see individual blades of grass and flowers, and hundreds of trees in dense forests and valleys. This game really does look incredible, much smoother than other PS2 games I saw at E3.
That's most of what I know so far...I'll post more when I get my copy of the real thing, which I have no doubt will me even better than it was during the summer!

(More customer reviews)I'm a HUGE huge fan of Ratchet and Clank. As soon as Going Commando game out we grabbed a copy - and have been playing it non-stop ever since! Talk about a great sequel!
The plot and gameplay is similar to the first game - you're going from planet to planet, bashing things, gathering up nuts and bolts and finding some INCREDIBLY fun weapons along the way. Even better, if you still have your memory card from the first game, you get to bring in many weapons from that for free.
If you didn't play Ratchet & Clank I, I *really* recommend you get it! It should be super-cheap by now and is great fun. It's not required to understand this second game, though.
This game is almost like 20 games in one. There are pod-racing like portions where you challenge on faster and faster tracks. There are gladiator arena fighting where you test your strength and endurance. There are spaceship flying sections like Wing Commander where you fly through asteroids and around corners. There are button-combos and logic puzzles and really funny video clips.
There are the skill points that you have to guess at and then execute. Each weapon upgrades to a new super version of itself. You really feel like you're making progress as you move through the game, becoming stronger and further along in the plot. Going back to planets is great fun, too, as you find ways to use your new weapons in fun ways.
The game is also great on an entire-family sort of way. There's a lot of fun puns that will go right over the heads of the kids, but in general the game can be great fun for everyone. The kids can hand the controller to the adults if they get stuck, and the adults will have just as much fun as the kids did (and may not give the controller back for a while).
There's always something fun to do, and if you want a change from what you're doing, just hop into one of the mini-games for a whole different experience. The game can literally go on forever. Highly, highly recommended as a must-have for any PS2!

(More customer reviews)I am a novice gamer so personally, I enjoyed the first Uzumaki Chronicles. I was challenged in the first one and expecting much more from the second installment. It is true that Naruto Uzumaki Chronicles 2 was much better than the first. The story is original, yet fitting, the music is better and more varied, and there are more characters to play.

The story starts with the Sand Ninja Kankuro and his puppets. He tells Naruto about a puppet wielding clan, the Shirogane Clan and their quest to gather the Spirit Orbs. It's up to you, Naruto, and your friends to unravel the mystery of the clan and the "puppetwalkers" & why they crave wanting the Spirit Orbs so bad.

The fact that you and a friend can play together is a plus. Like any game, it has it's bosses that can be tough. Too tough in fact, so you may need to go with a strategy guide. This game will appeal to all Naruto fans. The cut scenes and the graphics are improved form the first, but still a bit choppy. I guess it's a PS2 thing. The fighting is definitely better and not as predictable or repetitive as the first one. I loved the skill plate system in the first one and it returns here. If you are not an experienced super gamer, but a Naruto, fan this is right up your alley.

(More customer reviews)I rented this game and a few days later bought it. This is nearly a perfect Mortal Kombat game. I had lost interest in MK after it's many sequels and same ol, same ol. A new fighting system, weaponry and multiple fighting styles make this not only a challenge to master but a lot of fun as well. Plenty of Gore and Blood and plenty of moves where you have no choice but to say "that HAD to hurt". You have to love impaling your opponent.
Graphics and sound are top notch and the added Konquest mode and the Krypt add a new level to this game the previous titles didn't have.Konquest mode to unlock Blaze and Mokap can be cruelly frustrating, just TRY and do Raiden's Chain Lightning Branch Style Combo, i've been at it for two days now. They couldn't have made Konquest mode just a "tad" easier. certain characters in Konquest mode are far easier than others.Sometimes i could swear there's a glitch where you do the combo right but the game insists you didn't, and as other times you do it by mashing buttons as fast as you can and it decides to let you have it. The old favorites are back with some great new characters as well. It's a interesting concept mixing a fighting game with Kurrency to unlock hidden characters, arenas and alternate costumes to name a few. I've been playing it non stop since i got it. The only problems i can find with this game are the "cheese" factor of Moloch and certain moves or combinations of moves that a human player wouldn't be able to pull off, but the AI pulls off flawlessly, like blocking and attacking at the same time as well as perfectly timed reversals into a 15 hit Branch Style Combo that goes through all three fighting styles LOL.The rounded directional pad makes some of the moves harder to pull off than on say a playstation controller and that can get annoying at times, hitting down back to perform a "special move" only to jump in the air unintentionaly. The range of difficulty should have been spread out a little more as well, you go from your first fighting being a flawless victory in every round,to your third and fourth giving you a seriously AI sided fight.Staring at the screen going what the heck happened, i guess i blinked. I would have liked to have seen more than ONE fatality per character and maybe even a few arena fatalities as well. Some of the Branch Style Kombos seem next to impossible to pull off and having to do them to beat Konquest mode to unlock even more characters is frustrating, although die hard MK fans wll surely have no problems LOL. It's a great game and i can't wait to see the sequel. Plenty of morbid entertainment for your dollars.From what i've herd and seen the Xbox version is the BEST version of this game on a console. If you have an Xbox definetly pick this up or rent it. One final thing, Midway would have been smart to make this game Xbox LIVE compatible so you could play with other people online in VS mode, that would have been most excellent.

(More customer reviews)Fifa 07 hasn't changed much in terms of its graphics or commentary. They've added only one new league -- the Turkish league. But it only looks similar on the surface. Actual game play has been completely overhauled. Contested headers don't automatically go to one player, crosses have some curve to them. It's no longer easy to score by a straight cross from the corner. There are more volleys. The ball moves in more realistic ways. Deflectionssometimes go in the air. Shots result in a greater variety of visual outcomes.
So, playing this game is a lot more realistic. It's a lot like the winning eleven series, except that it has the benefit of all of the official league licenses and all of the other nice stuff that the series has always had. I haven't explored the manager option yet, so I can't really comment on that. Overall, a great upgrade.

(More customer reviews)Back in 2000, there was a little unknown gem on Sega Dreamcast called 'Shenmue', which became a huge financial flop despite the universal critical praises.Its sequel only showed up in Japan and later ported to the original X-Box after Dreamcast's demise.Shenmue was the game that invented QTE (Quick Time Event) that are so frequently used by many games like Resident Evil 4, Heavy Rain and God of War series.

Yakuza 3 is the third installment of the popular Japanese action adventure game series by Sega that inherit all the characteristics of Shenmue series.But it is this installment that finally exceeds everything Shenmue tried to be in spades with so much more contents and depths.Yakuza series was understandably not well-known outside Japan at all due to its quirky and idiosyncratic eccentricity stemming from distictively Japanese culture.Make no mistake, this is one of the most popular game in Japan.With population half as big as the U.S. but so much diversities in different genres of video games (each game is targeted speficically for intended demographic rather than potential demographic as here in the U.S.), half-million copies sold is viewed as bona-fide success.With sensible budget and half-million copies means good profits and the next sequel.The fourth one has just been released in Japan.There have been tons and tons of games on PS and Nintendo consoles that never make outside Japan, and Yakuza series are one of the rare ones that are available here in the U.S.

Warning to fans of GTA or the likes and JRPG; Yakuza 3 is not a console RPG or GTA-clone, as many would describe it.It's a grand style action adventure game that indeed plays very much like JRPG but so jam-packed with contents that it put arguably all console RPG to shame and gives even the longest CRPG like 'Oblivion' or 'Fallout 3' some serious run for its money.Don't be surprise to clock in over 100 hours to unlock 100 percent completion percentage.Beside the main story, which gives you good 20-25 hours, the game is overflowing with substories and side activities.Plus you can always engage in street fight at certain points.On and all, if you ever played either of Shenmue, you'll know exactly what you're getting into.This really is 'Shenmue' reincarnated, so if you ever moaned about the demise of the series, pick this up without any hesitation.

Its fighting mechanics is Sega's own 'Streets of Rage' style beat-them-up brawler with some depth.Just don't expect more complicated fighting game like Sega's own 'Virtua Fighter'.But the actual fighting is much more brutal, violent, bone-crunching and over the top than the unrealistic arcady fighting games that let you shoot fireball from your eyes so you will have a heck of a time engaging in combat.It's really fun.

The story is thoroughly Japanese and also very realistic and real-life related like actual Japanese TV drama.The plot progresses via dynamic cutscenes and static dialogues.While each literation in the series offers a self-contain story arc but you would have much more emotional resonance if you've already played the first two on PS2. It also have many recurring themes overlapping from the first two.Luckily, the game gives you full rundown of the story of the first two games with cutscenes directly lifted from the PS2 games.

However, the game only offers Japanese soundtrack with English subtitle, due to huge cultural differences between Japanese and western nations, the game will be difficult to get into for a lot of people.Don't be surprised if you don't understand many of customs, references and logics.Pacing would also make things difficult for more casual gamers who are used to quick access and fast-paced run-of-the-mill action game.This is an action adventure game that heavily focuses on human drama.Episodic and sometimes brutal, sometimes poignant, but always humane and realistic, it requires you to read and reminisce a lot as a main character on the way.

Visual is indeed very impressive.Facial model is the most impressive aspect and on par with 'Heavy Rain'.The graphical style opts for photo-realism so everything is very real-life like.But the jagged character models and color imperfection signal that this is still a video game.While not exactly 'Uncharted 2' or 'God of War 3', this is one fine looking game.

Controversy surrounding the contents cut from the original Japanese version are indeed true.

Cut content from the western version of Yakuza 3 includes:

-"Loser" (Japanese theme song by Eikichi Yazawa)
-Wooing women in hostess clubs
-Managing a hostess club
-Mahjong mini-game
-Shogi mini-game
-Massage parlor mini-game
-Answer X Answer trivia game
-Convenience store magazine browsing (you can only see the covers)
-A handful of sub-missions all related to aforementioned cut contents (26 out of 126 substories to be precise)

The official explanation of the cut is due to the cultural gap between Japanese and westerners, Sega worried that it would not resonate as much with western gamers with the axed contents.I personally call this a load of crap for Yakuza 1 and 2 previously had massage parlor, casino, hostess club mini games.I assure you that the omitted contents really don't change the game at all.Only some of the extra side activities are cut and the game is already jam-packed with side activities.But it would be much nicer to maintain the integrity of the original work.

It's been a crazy couple of months for me.From belated port of 'Star Ocean: The Last Hope', revolutionary 3D adventure game called 'Heavy Rain' to highly controversial yet solid 'Final Fantasy XIII' and the return of the king in 'God of War 3', it really has been taxing on my budget.Now 'Yakuza 3' is another excellent addition to already impressive Playstation library filled with diversified entries, variaties and quality.With 'Fallout: New Vegas', 'Two Worlds II', 'Arcania: A Gothic Tale', 'God of War III', 'MGS: Peace Walker', 'Metroid: Other M', and possibly another Zelda, my urges and passion for CRPG and action adventure games will be thoroughly satisfied in the year 2010.

(More customer reviews)Any enjoyment you might derive from this game is from playing as Jet Li in an old-school fight setting.When the novelty of that wears off, what you have left is an incredibly repetitive game with a godawful camera and an ill-advised control scheme.

Yes, bonus marks are in order for using Cantonese in Hong Kong with subtitles.(As a native Hong Kong person I can say the dialogue is less stilted than usual, though still flawed)Though I might add that international espionage games like Syphon Filter has been doing that for years.The settings are authentic enough, with the battles in the Hong Kong settings being especially evocative of kung fu films.

But is it worth the very problematic gameplay?Just barely.If you've seen/played the demo already, you'll know that the entire fight system consists of slapping the right analog stick.While the array of moves you can unleash is impressive, motion-captured well from Li's own silhouette, this system is very ill conceived from a fighting-game perspective.Worse still, the camera is so restless that you could be in the middle of a combo against an enemy, and then the perspective shifts so that you're suddenly hitting at air and the enemy's to the side.So many game designers have misled notions about being filmmakers, not realizing that the best perspective for gaming is a fixed perspective.This problem came to a head during the ludicrous "escape from capture" stage where the camera actually cuts you off, preventing you from seeing what's behind you, even though there are guards sweeping flashlights that way that you're supposed to avoid!This is simply a moronic use of the camera.

Aside from this, the fighting gets tired awfully quickly, especially since the designers committed the ol' "this level never ends" sin.This game alleviates this problem by having lots of checkpoints where you can continue the game, but during some of the "one against 14" stages, the endless brawling still gets tired.And whose idea was it to have enemies pull off 18-hit combos, where if you get hit the first time, you get to watch your character get pummelled for 10 seconds straight?

I actually find the gunfight segments of this game more fun than the endless, endless hand-to-hand stages.This is where the dual analog sticks truly shine, allowing you to smoothly run from spot to spot forwards and backwards while your hands can aim independently and a top button allows you to do Time Crisis-style ducking.There's even a crazy level where you fight off about 100 enemies with two nailguns!

This game would probably remain tempting to Jet Li fans because of the role-playing aspect of it.And I wouldn't blame them -- this was my reason for buying this game, and there are a few levels that I truly enjoyed.The overall game, however, is really not that great, and I would recommend only playing it in small doses.It will get tired mightily quickly if you sit with it for more than an hour.
