A surprisingly good game. My wife even likes it! As a cyclist i was surprised by the high level of realism in the game.A player can actually exert subtle physical control over the bike- such as standing whilehammering the pedals, sitting back for improved braking and increased"endurance"- and have the expected result. All in all a goodgame.

WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role Review

WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When WWF Smackdown! made it's groundbreaking debut, it amazed some, and others didn't like it.It's obvious pros were graphics and the surprising new match of Special Referee, which is used as getting back at those who stabbed you in the back, or vice versa. There were some cons such as no commentary, and not that much choice in Create-A-Wrestler. It probably wont make any difference to those when it's sequel, WWF Smackdown! 2:Know Your Role hits shelves across the country (supposed release is Tuesday the 21st). Smackdown 2 will have about twice as many wrestlers as there were in the origional (that's about 60 wrestlers), plus a much more updated Create-A-Wrestler feature. Some of the new matches in Smackdown! 2 are the Ladder Match, Table Match, ---- in a Cell, and (the match that has to be unlocked first) the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match. In addition to some of what you're expecting, you'll get a Create-A-Manager mode, where you pick between Chyna, Steven Richards and others to walk to the ring with you and cause disturbance. You also get a Create-A-Taunt mode, where you go frame-by-frame moving certain body parts certain ways, so you can do the Y-M-C-A, or give the crowd the finger while doing a russian dance. Finally, there are double-moves you can execute, an interactive announcer's table you can slam an opponent's head into and break it by doing some strong moves. There is way too much more to talk about, and not enough room to write about. So I'll go out saying I hope you liked my quick summary of the game, and I also hope you enjoy the game.

Product Description:
SmackDown! 2 is the best wrestling game for the PlayStation, period. In both its graphics and gameplay, it's very similar to the firstSmackDown!, except that players will find a mother lode of options forspicing up their wrestling lives.
Besides season mode, players can fight in ladder, table, and chair matches.Their battles can spill over into back areas, in which furniture and eventraffic abound. Wrestlers can even drive a forklift over their opponents forparticularly painful results. All of the ring entrances are there in finedetail. Players also can create their own wrestler with hair, weight, andaccessory options that rival those of any wrestling game out there.
Still missing is the color commentary; also, the move set for each wrestler iskind of limited. Overall, players can expect a fun experience that, while notperfect, is certainly the top wrestling title for the system. --RobbGuido
Pros:

    Stellar graphics and user-friendly controls
    Countless options
Cons:

    Still no color commentary

Brunswick Circuit Pro Bowling Review

I've been playing video bowling games ever since Bowling came out for the Atari 2600. Never have I seen a game that has more realistic pin action than Brunswick Circuit Pro Bowlingby THQ for the Playstation. I'm a bowling fanatic so I'm a hard judge on bowling games. The pin action will leave you in awe. I've played hundreds, perhaps thousands, of games, and still see new pin action at times depending on the bowler, ball, and lane that I use. I never tire of playing this game. I only hope that THQ brings an updated version of this to the Playstation 2!

Silent Hill 2 Review

Silent Hill 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Silent Hill 2 is a harrowing story that many people may not understand. The exposition sweeps us into the world of James Sunderland, who has received a letter from his wife, Mary, requesting a rendezvous in the resort town of Silent Hill. So what? Mary has been dead for three years. James isn't sure what to make of this, but he goes to the town anyway. Mysteriously, it seems abandoned, it is choked with a thick fog, and ungodly creatures lurk in the streets.
Silent Hill 2 is masterpiece of persisting psychological tension -- not a huge step beyond the original game, just a refinement to near-perfect horror. It is about the very essence of fear, captured in myriad qualities. The grimy visuals, the horrifying sound, the manipulation of your senses...
The designers behind this game knew _exactly_ how to evince fear in a player. They play on the fears a lot of regular people have...strange, dark places; darkness; weird sounds. Firstly, your vision often somehow restricted. Most oppressive is the ubiquitous fog sluiced in the town; in dark places, you must rely on a flashlight. Sound is also used effectively. James carries a radio that creates distorted noise when monsters are near. Imagine the uneasiness of the following situation: you are standing in a dark, narrow hallway, your flashlight shining ahead, revealing nothing. However, you are nearly deafened by the cacophony coming from your radio, and there is a fleshy thump of a demonic creature staggering around somewhere ahead.
The sum of these effects (visual and sound) is a pervasive fear that can be virtually suffocating. It goes farther, still. Random sounds can be heard as you explore. Maybe you'll enter a room and hear breaking glass. This puts you on edge, because you think it could be an attacker or just a random sound inserted to frighten you...there's no way to tell. Sometimes an area will contain a monster physically unable to attack you, but because of the darkness there is no way to tell. You will be constantly on alert because of the monster's sounds and the static of your radio. With the right audio gear, the game can be experienced in surround sound, which greatly enriches the experience. The music can be downright terrifying...although it is rarely music, actually. Often, it is just oppressively creepy atmospheric noise.
The visuals also work hard to unsettle you. Camera angles often impair vision, used to inject senses of claustrophobia or vertigo. Aesthetically, this design team is so deranged/talented it's scary. Grimy environments, decrepit buildings, messages written in blood... That's not so bad though. The truly frightening imagery appears later, where blood covers walls like paint, rusty iron grates cover abyssal pits, gruesome paintings adorn rooms, sheets covers walls and floors (why _is_ that so creepy?), and generally weird, sick stuff that eludes description. Silent Hill 2 has you exploring locales like an underground prison and a mental hospital, which let the developers show off their devilishly twisted creativity. The monsters are sick and bizarre, usually resembling fleshy, humanoid things smeared with red-black gore. Their movements alone are unsettling, with jerky, sporadic movements and attacks.
It's difficult to describe how all these elements factor into the experience. Let me try and explain my own thoughts... From the beginning, the game is unsettling, and it is relentless in its tension. As the game goes on, I found that it was becoming psychologically and even physically taxing to continue. Every encounter with a monster left me tired. It's not that fighting the monsters were difficult in gameplay terms, but their movements and sounds created a nearly paralyzing desperation. All of the twisted imagery, jarring sounds, and unending anxiety really wore me down. But it's just a game, right? Sure, but the guys at Konami tapped into virtually every conceivable factor that makes one afraid, and they mercilessly hammer at you. The visceral impact of this game is nearly incomparable.
The game is paced very well, from the tepid yet nerve-racking opening to the intense final hour, and the game is set up so you don't have to backtrack as much as you did in the first game. The puzzles are pretty easy (even if you put riddle difficulty on "hard"), but clever and disturbing in their own way. I don't think the game is difficult, but it _seems_ like it is, because it keeps beating up your courage.
Some have said Silent Hill 2's story is stupidly convoluted and weird. I would suggest those who make such comments have not bothered to think about the story fully. In-depth analysis reveals the story's complex brilliance. I encourage players to ask themselves: What is the very nature of Silent Hill -- how does it affect the people there? What is the connection shared between the humans drawn to the town -- and how is Laura different from the rest? What is the underlying cause behind the different monsters that appear? The answers lead to understanding. Having played and analyzed the story of the first game will help one's grasp of the second, as well. Silent Hill's story is so deliciously complex and open to interpretation that it beats not only most games, but also a wealth of good cinema and literature. Really.
Silent Hill 2 has four endings, as well as a fifth joke ending. Usually if a game has more than two endings I won't pursue them because I don't have the time, but my desire to more fully experience this game drove me to getting the four main ones. They are called: "Maria", "Water", "Leaving", and "Rebirth". Personally, I interpreted "Leaving" to be the happiest ending, but opinions may vary. "Rebirth" is particularly dark and twisted, available only after beating the game once and acquiring several secret items. The game can be beaten once in about 10 hours, but I think it's still a great value given the sheer intensity of the experience. Quality over quantity!
There is still much more I could say (I could write a book on the plot analysis), but I think I'm pushing Amazon.com's word limit. In short: this is by far the most frightening game ever. Don't pass it up.

Product Description:
Gamers looking for intellectual horror will find it in Silent Hill 2. As the story opens, James Sunderland receives a letter from his wife telling him to meet her in the town of Silent Hill. The only problem is that she's been dead for three years. In hopes of reuniting with her, Sunderland explores the haunted town, where he has many terrifying and unexpected encounters. While the brilliantly designed monsters are indeed scary, it's the complex twists and turns of the plot that really produce the game's terror.
The gameplay is largely puzzle based. Much of it involves gathering clues and items to solve each puzzle. A few fights are thrown in, but these are quite easy, and are mostly used to show off the developers' bizarre creations. The level of both puzzles and fighting can be adjusted to match each player's skill level. Although its mechanics are rudimentary, the game's presentation is anything but. A heavy use of fog is the game's hallmark effect, greatly adding to the mood. Sound--both effects and music--alternates between eerie silence and sudden, shocking crescendos.
Although the graphics and sound are both topnotch, the real star of this game is the story. It's very rich and intricate--a sharp contrast to the banal scenarios that frame most games. Although the game is short (around 10 hours), players will want to give it another go to discover its multiple endings and secret items. Despite basic gameplay, Silent Hill 2 is an excellent choice for gamers looking for cerebral thrills. Parents should note that in addition to violence and gore, this game deals with such topics as suicide, homicide, and euthanasia. --Raymond M. Padilla
Pros:

    Scary and stylish graphics
    Excellent cutscenes
    Effective sound effects and music
    Original creature design

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria Review

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My experience with developer tri-ace's games dates back to the original Playstation era with Star Ocean:The 2nd Story. Like most gamers on this side of the world, this was probably the one of the first tri-ace titles that had and created enough of a buzz to form a niche of fans. The other game, which is credited with a simular yet even bigger buzz, was the original Valkyrie Profile.

Unfortunately, the yield from the initial pressing run of that game was so low (so tri-ace wouldn't lose to much if the game didn't sell or catch on) by the time I had heard the hype surrounding VP and wanted to give the game a try it was much too late... copies of the game were selling at astronomical prices on e-bay much like how sealed copies of Final Fantasy VII are selling now. Because of this I was ecstatic when a sequel - which in this case is actually a prequel - was announced so I could finally experience what I had missed out on the first time in one form or another. Granted, VP2 is not a complete carbon copy of the original, but the majority of the gameplay elements cross the game/generation gap, so in essence this game should probably give you an idea of what the original itself was like.

So, would I say that I was blown away or impressed by what I missed out with missing the original VP? Not really.

To start with, the game is simply beautiful. There are some dazzling effects, from leaves and grass waving in the breeze to various types of weather pounding some of the locals. This is what one should expect from a last generation PS2 title. Sure, every once in a while the battle camera might clip some polygons so it looks like your characters are standing on air, but that is so minor it doesn't matter. The only gripe I have is I wish the characters weapons changed depending on what they currently have equipped. However, since the character designs are so dependant on the default look of the weaponry, the above simply wouldn't work very well.

Combat is Valkyrie's claim to fame, much like it is in other tri-ace games like Star Ocean. This is a good thing, considering the amount of time you'll spend in battle mode leveling up the game's massive number of characters (of which only a handful are actually involved in the story, the others just seem to be there). At a quick glance, the battle system seems to be a button mashers dream, but like a good 3D fighting series (Soul Caliber or Tekken) those who know what their doing will always get further or have less difficulty as things can be difficult enough. Other combat related issues also sprout up: reviving an ally requires you to be near the ally's body and status effects are so not your friend - especially when the whole party is inflicted at once (especially with poison) *shutter* .

As fun as combat is, there are quite a few hitches to be aware of, such as wasting AP on a dash and getting nowhere because your party is caught on the edge of "something" in the environment or when party members become separated for the same reason, limiting your attack options until you take the time and go back and get them. This becomes especially aggravating when you're trying to finish battles as quickly and efficiently as possible to receive experience and crystal bonuses. The change from a 2D fighting environment in VP to a 3D one in VP2 works, but the above issues make you yearn for 2D battles of the original which would probably be devoid of these problems.

The game's skill system is another area that initially seems interesting and clever but quickly becomes quite cumbersome. You'll form rune words with your equipment and accessories to unlock new "potential" skills. Note the word "potential" in the previous sentence. Unlocking a new skill doesn't grant the character the skill automatically - only though battle can the skill be used and permanently learned. At first glance this is a good thing since it prevents abuse (think FFIX skill system here), but the player then quickly finds out it "may" (well, usually) take a long to learn said skill. Instead of being awarded a set amount of points towards your skills after an enemy defeat like in most normal RPGs, a percentage earned towards potential skills based on the average level of your current party and that of the enemy(s). Because of this you'll constantly be seeking out stronger and stronger enemies and you'll hardly ever find an "undeniable great place" to level up. You'll also be contending with the never ending equipping and unequipping of equipment while doing this and often means your party is usually far from wearing the strongest available equipment at all times - something that is usually a given in most RPGs.

Traversing dungeons is probably the most noteworthy aspect of VP2 after the battle system. The first few are a complete cakewalk and teach you the ropes, the later ones can really test you sanity and your brainpower. Correct sealstone usage and photon know-how go a long way towards completely clearing them of all their contents. Kudos to tri-ace for the awesome auto map feature - features like this need to become an industry/genre standard!

In the sound department, Motoi Sakuraba makes a rather subdued yet solid entrance, seeming to ditch his rather unique yet unorthodox style of composing. It's not until much later until you hear a piece and you know "yeah, that's Sakuraba, no doubt". The voice-overs are good, but at the same time just a few tiers above decent.

Valkyrie Profile 2 also falls victim to problems that are prevalent in other tri-ace games. Some moments of unbalanced gameplay creep up on the player as the difficulty goes up a few notches without much warning. The story is once again slow to start (is this even a surprise anymore with tri-ace games?), and some of the story twists you can see coming a mile away (the one revelation at the end of Chapter 3 was so freaking obvious!).

All this said is Valkyrie Profile 2 worth playing if you've never experienced VP? Yes. However, now having experienced it, I honestly think I could have had waited for a price drop instead of buying it on day it came out. Despite this, I still look forward to playing the re-release of the original on the PSP.

Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny Review

Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny

Great game for people who would like to see Onimusha1 and Final Fantasy combined.
Improvements were definately intended on character interaction. The games story line is greatly based on how you trade special items with the other four characters in the game.I've finished the game twice but I've yet to unlock all of the side stories with the other characters.Personally I think this detracts from the game but my wife, who loves the long Final Fantasy stories, loved trying to figure out how to open all the side stories. Some of the side stories do add a lot to the game, I just didn't like spending so much time trying to unlock them all.(I usually hand the controller to my wife whenever the game switches from action to game plot;-)
If you don't mind talking to all the characters in the game two or three times, then you'll probably love this game. The action and graphics are much better than the first Onimusha. There's also a couple new weapons that add significantly.(The War Hammer kicks @$$)Although the game is still too short, if you liked Onimusha 1 like I did then you'll probably love this game.
Disclaimer:I bought and played the Japanese version of Onimusha2 which may be different than the American release.

King of Fighters: Maximum Impact (Collector's Edition) Review

King of Fighters: Maximum Impact
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
King of Fighters: Maximum Impact is the first KOF 3-D game. Although this game has a good presentation, good graphics, awesome sound & visual effects, and awesome voiceovers, the controls just make this version of KOF unplayable.

Graphics 7/10 - Yes, I know I said that this game has good graphics, but, seriously, they could be better. However for SNK's 1st attempt in a 3-D KOF game, they did a good job.

Sound Effects/Voiceovers 10/10 - The sound effects and voiceovers in this game blew me away! Probably the best thing in the game!

Visual Effects 10/10 - Awesome visual effects! All the moves are done very well.

Gameplay 3/10 - Unfortunately, the very difficult-to-master controls makes this version of KOF unplayable. There are about 20-30 controls for each character, many of them hard to memorize and hard to perform quickly.

Bonus DVD 2/10 - The collector's edition includes a bonus behind-the-scenes DVD. BORING! All they talked about in this video is how they changed the game into 3-D. There is one chapter in this DVD that gives you a profile of each character. It's like reading the beginning text in a Star Wars movie....only much, much longer (over 20 minutes to be exact). Well...at least this DVD makes a good collector's item.

Overall: I recommend this game only if you are a fan of the King of Fighters series. If you're looking for a good fighting game, get Soul Calibur II for PS2.

3 out of 5 stars

NBA Street Vol 2 Review

NBA Street Vol 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not a fan of the NBA. I could care less about the Lakers rolling over in . Passing to your big man in the paint time and time again doesn't impress me.
With that said, "NBA Street Vol. 2" knocks me out of my seat and dribbles the ball off my face! This is straight-up, old school, smooth skills, street basketball at its very finest. The original "NBA Street" was great with the tricks and the stars of the modern day NBA, but "Street 2" gives you the ultimate roster of ABA and NBA legends from which to choose and play. Who can possibly beat a trio consisting of Dr. J, Larry Legend, and MJ? What about Magic, Tiny, and The Hawk? On top of that, you've got moves and tricks so sweet you'll have to visit the dentist each time you play. New additions to the moves make the gameplay deeper and more entertaining. The first "NBA Street" gave you a limited number of combos that got boring after a lot of play. The moves in "Street 2" are new and numerous so boredom won't be setting in at all.
I'm glad to see original game announcer, "Joe the Show," move on. After a day or two of playing, I'd heard everything he had to say and muted him for good. (How many times do I need to hear "Ladies and gentlemen... Michael Jordan is back!") "Street 2's" Bobbito is funny and witty and brings excitement to the game. You feel good when he praises you for a good play and you feel crummy when he cracks on you for a bad play. The courts are authentic and you travel all over the country in your quest to the the best baller there is, was, or will be.
This game is kid-friendly, teen-friendly, and adult-friendly. It would be fun to play with a person who watched the ABA legends and NBA stars in their prime. They'd get a big kick out of watching Pistol Pete take on Yao Ming or watching Wilt "The Stilt" ball it against Shaq.
So get off the couch, lace up the Chuck Taylors, and ball like you've never balled before!

Once again, Hanaho HIVE Technology is being used for emulation of the games, though the sound emulation (music tracks) of 1943 is a bit off. Some early copies of the game that popped up in stores had a controller bug in it where the controller would no longer function correctly after playing the game for the first time. This was corrected by Hanaho at a later date and patches were posted to the SelectSoft website.

Overall, this package seems nice for the price, but considering Gametap is out there with lots more games to choose from it makes this game seem expensive.....

Silent Hill 3 Review

I notice a lot of people have already reviewed & rated this game despite having not actually played it yet. I do own it (i live in the U.K. where it was released on May 23rd) & it's excellent. It's extremely similar to the 2nd game in terms of graphics & gameplay, which is a good thing as the 2nd game was extremely well done, & is one of the only truly scary videogames i've ever played. Part 3 lives up to this as well, offering a similar experience to the 2nd game, only with brand new characters, storyline & puzzles. A mention must go to the graphics. Like the previous game, they're excellent, with some brilliantly atmospheric lighting & shadow effects, which really help to suck you into the game. It contains some pretty gruesome images & the soundtack is designed to really amp up the tension. If you compare Resident Evil to a George Romero zombie flick then this can only be compared to something Clive Barker would have come up with. To sum it up, if you're a fan of the series, you'll love this, if you didn't like the first 2 games, then you won't like this one either. If you've never played a Silent Hill game, give this one a try, it's well worth it.

There's a steady list of classic compilation games coming out these days, and the Sega Genesis Collection brings nearly thirty classic Genesis games to the PS2, and they all look, sound, and play like their original, 16-bit counterparts. Many of the games here we haven't seen on previous Sega compilations, like Alex Kidd, Bonanza Bros., Shadow Dancer, Ristar, Decap Attack, Sword of Vermillion, Super Thunder Blade, and Shinobi 3 to go along with faves like Sonic 1 & 2, the Golden Axe trilogy, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Flicky, the Ecco trilogy, and the Phantasy Star games, which thankfully includes the overlooked classic Phantasy Star IV, which along with II and III, is worth the price of admission alone.Vectorman 1 & 2 are here as well, and so is the Genesis version of Virtua Fighter 2, which is the only real weak spot of the compilation as it is just as muddy, slow, and buggy as it was when released on the Genesis years ago. There's a good amount of extras as well, including many interviews with developers, and unlockable games like the arcade version of Altered Beast and Zaxxon.Sadly though, some games which longtime fans may have wanted to see here, like the Streets of Rage trilogy, Revenge of Shinobi, Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force, Landstalker, and Eternal Champions would have been more than welcome, although many of them are available on previous compilations. All in all, the Sega Genesis Collection is a wonderful compilation of some of the best Genesis games ever, and for longtime fans of the classic console, this is a must have.

My favorite PS2 game so far!Mirra 2 is definitely the best extreme game yet.The incredible size of the levels is amazing. With the awesome trick system and all the challenges it keeps you coming back for more in a big way. There's also a Park Editor which lets you create any kind of level you want.I've spent hours and hours making my own levels--it's like a game in itself!Another cool thing is the riders have both competition gear (helmets, pads, etc.) and street clothing.Another really cool thing is one of the multiplayer games is a contest to see who can wipe out the worst. It's hilarious watching your guy get run over by trains and cars and even golf carts!
I'm gonna be playing this game for a long time.

NBA Live 2004 Review

NBA Live 2004

Against my better judgment, I went out and purchased NBA Live 2004 after swearing off the franchise after last year's debacle.Though I loved the hyped Freestyle Control, I found 2003 to be incredibly frustrating for it's emphasis on arcade-like game play that allowed the opponent to score at will. But like a battered wife, I eventually found myself coming back, hoping that things would change for the better.I'm happy to say that NBA Live 2004 is light years ahead of it's predecessor.

Two major gripes I had with last year's version were the opponent's high shooting percentages and their ability to almost always snag the offensive rebound. Not only are these two issues fixed in this year's edition, the entire game play engine has been overhauled as well.Based on the "All-Star" difficulty setting, which is geared towards more experienced Live players, the opponent's defense is stingy and tough as nails. The Freestyle Control, which made it easy to breeze past defenders to the basket through a series of jukes and cross-overs, is not as effective, though it sure is pretty to watch. It's refreshing to have to work for a score. To do so, the emphasis must now be on setting picks and using motion to free a player for an open shot.Thankfully, EA has implemented a few tools that you can use at your disposal.A new feature this year allows you to control a player without the ball.Once you feel that you're open or have a clear path to the basket, you can call for the ball and go for the shot.Furthermore, EA has now implemented a control scheme in which you can either choose to go for a jump shot or a dunk.I guess they were tired of the complaints about the two foot jump shot from the basket. In addition to the new dunk and jump shot buttons, you can now alter your shot if you feel that it is about to be stuffed. For instance, say that you're driving down the lane, hell-bent on dunking the ball in your opponent's face. However, you notice that another defender has shifted over so that now you're facing a two on one challenge at the hole.By pressing the dunk button and then quickly tapping it again, your dunk now becomes a sweeping lay-up, a la Jordon around Sam Perkins in the '92 Finals.Sweet...Also, a welcomed addition to this year's game is the hop step, or traveling according to basketball purists.Regardless, by pressing the Y button when facing an opponent, your player will now "hop" towards the basket to free himself for an open jumper or a dunk. The closer you are to the basket, the better chance the move will be more effective.I also noticed that for some players, the move is much more effective than for others. While playing as the Houston Rockets, I found that it was harder for Yao Ming to pull off the hop step as opposed to Steve Franchise.Thankfully, you can't overly abuse this move since it hardly guarantees a score. It just allows you more breathing room to get a shot off.

Rebounding. This has been a thorn in the Live series for as long as I can remember.I don't know how many times when my man was about to snag a rebound when the ball magically teleported to the hands of an opposing player. It took almost a decade, but I'm glad EA has finally fixed this problem that oh, so haunted past games like the angry ghosts in Poltergeist.By pressing the jump button on defense, I'm happy to report that the ball will most likely be rebounded depending on the position on the player and the timing of the jump.I could never figure out why this concept seemed so difficult for past developers.Granted, the computer will occasionally snag the offensive rebound, but it is less often than before.

Graphically, NBA Live 2004 is visually impressive, especially on the XBOX.The colors are vibrant and the player models are smooth and detailed just enough to distinguish one from the other. However, they are still too cartoonish-looking, with large heads, hands and feet.If Sega can realistically render it's players in their upcoming ESPN NBA Basketball down to the pimple, I don't know why EA can't either.I also miss some of the in-game cut scenes that were prevalent in 2003.They captured the fun and essence of an NBA game, but are sorely absent in this year's version. So far, I've only noticed one which happened during time-outs when the players converged around the coach. Also, EA finally took the effort to model the stadiums based on their real life counterparts.Gone are those generic courts that seemed indistinguishable from the other.Unfortunately, the game suffers from serious frame rate issues from time to time.I have yet to play the game on other camera settings than the press box view so I don't know if that has an affect. If not, then EA's quality assurance team should be fired.

After NBA 2k3 unofficially won the title as best basketball game last year, the ball was in EA's court to face up to the challenge.I'm relieved to say that they have.By overhauling the game play engine, serious issues such as rampant scoring and offensive rebounding swayed towards the opponent's favor have been fixed.NBA Live 2004 now feels like a real basketball game. The flashiness has been toned down with the emphasis more on defense and basic fundamentals. One can only hope that this is the benchmark for future Live games.

Burnout 3 Takedown Review

Burnout 3 Takedown

Look. I'll break it down for you:

Do you like to race cars in video games?
Do you like to see cars crash, explode, flip, and disintegrate?

That's all you need to absolutely fall in love with this game.

Some people complain about computer cars that throw themselves at you. Hello? It's a videogame! I suspect that those complainers simply don't know how to play the game to avoid these cars.

As for the music and the DJ, guess what? You can turn them off if you don't like them.

But AI cars and punk music are not the reasons to love this game. The real star of the game is the ULTRA-realistic crash animations. I swear, you will never get bored of watching these cars crash. Sparks fly, fenders pop off, hoods crumple, and cars split in two in the most amazing animated crashes you will EVER see.

I highly recommend this game. Is it the best RACING game out there? No. But it's not about the racing. It's about watching things blow up, going really fast, and not taking this too seriously.

Have fun and buy this game!

The game is fast and fun, but with some tearing on the PS2 version. Poor PS2, it just can't handle the speed anymore. I can't wait for the PS3. I have a 41" Sony XBR Tube TV and my eyes were bleeding the first night of play. Wow!! My eye doctor gave me a bottle of teardrops for playing these types of games. Your eyes don't get washed by normal blinking and dry out because you're concentrating so much. Get yourself some REFRESH TEARS if you play race games for hours on end. You'll need it here. The graphics are good with nice rain and sunlight effects. The Dolby Pro Logic is some of the best surround I've heard in a game. The thunder coming out of my rear effects speakers was incredible. There's a WIDESCREEN feature. There is an option to mix the 26 songs in the jukebox anyway you like. I don't care for Hip Hop so I turned it all off and put all the Heavy Metal in random order. You can also sample every song to make your choice. If you don't like Heavy Metal or Hip Hop you can turn it ALL off and just listen to the sounds of the engines purring. The MENUS are confusing at first as there are many sub-menus within sub-menus. It took me 15 minutes just to figure out how to get out of CAREER MODE. (You must PAUSE, go to your SAFE HOUSE, and GO BACK two times to find the MAIN MENU.) It's not the most user friendly menu system I've seen.

This time NEED FOR SPEED mixes the free roaming city of the UNDERGROUND series with the heavy police presence of THE HOT PURSUIT games. The game has a million tracks and a million things to do.

The meat of the game is the CAREER MODE. This is where you acquire the stats in EVENTS, MILESTONE COMPETITIONS, and CHALLENGES to be challenged by the 15 MOST WANTED on THE BLACKLIST and open all the cars and some of the juicier parts for the cars. You'll meet all the characters in FMV which is a little weird, but kind of cool, for a racing game. The acting is good, but you can forward through all of them if you just want to race. Some of the characters will give you hints via messages on the SMS cellphone and email feature which you can manage by either keeping or deleting them. Along with acquiring stats you'll also need to make your presence known to the police and collect needed BOUNTY points so that when you have enough BOUNTY and stats you'll be challenged by a rival on THE BLACKLIST. Your RAP sheet contains all the info about your ALIAS. The funniest stat was for the amount of damage you've caused the State. CAREER MODE is where you FREE ROAM which is really unnecessary because you'll find yourself getting into the BLACKLIST with the press of a button to enter the events you need to be challenged by a rival. Once you enter an EVENT, CHALLENGE, MILESTONE COMPETITION or BOUNTY, it takes you were you need to go. There are also ICONS throughout the city that are also unnecessary for certain EVENTS. Just go into the BLACKLIST MENU to check off the things you need. However, you will need the WORLD MAP display to set the GPS system to show you where the parts SHOPS are. You can't go directly to them from the BLACKLIST or PAUSE MENU. You'll need to drive to them. You can get to the SAFE HOUSE (your garage) by just pressing the PAUSE button. You don't have to drive there. To me the free roaming around the city is rather moot unless you want to get the lay of the city for when the cops are chasing you. I just wing it with the MINI MAP provided in the lower left corner of the screen looking for the SPEEDBREAKER and COOL DOWN spots. The only time you use the whole city, which opens up later with more sections, is when you're running from the cops. The rest of the events are set courses that you must follow to beat.

Other MODES are QUICK RACE with QUICK PLAY where the game gives you the car for the track you select. The manual tells you to play this MODE because it will unlock special cars or items you can't unlock in other parts of the game. There's also CUSTOM RACE in QUICK PLAY where you use a separate garage with a limited choice of cars until you open up the rest of the cars in CAREER MODE. You can also set the number of laps and the number of rivals for most events. There's SPLIT SCREEN for head to head racing and THE CHALLENGE SERIES, which was the meat of the game in NEED FOR SPEED HOT PURSUIT 2.

RACE TYPES include CIRCUIT, DRAG, LAP KNOCKOUT, SPEEDTRAP, SPRINT, and TOLLBOOTH.

The cars are great, but limited, and can be customized. Visual CUSTOMIZATION is rather needless for reasons I mention below. I love the MUSTANG FASTBACK. As a teen in the late 70's and early 8o's, I street raced a '66 MUSTANG with a 289 punched out to a 302, a Holley 4 barrel, a high-speed rearend, a low race cam, turbo flow mufflers, anti-sway bars, and a Cruisematic transmission. That's it!! We didn't use nitrous or computers. And that car was the fastest quarter-miler in the whole San Fernando Valley in SO CAL. The only car that ever came close to beating me was a CORVETTE. That dreaded CORVETTE is in the game too. The FORD GT is a great car and one of my favorites from GRAN TURISMO. I'm glad they included the LAMBORGINIS from HOT PURSUIT, but where are the FERRARIS? Where else can you destroy a $250,000 FERRARI and just go get another one. Bummer. You will be driving the lesser cars for a while until you earn enough money to buy better ones, but even the smaller cars FLY when you get them souped up. VERY NICE!! VERY FAST!!

One of the best things about the NEED FOR SPEED series are the car physics. HOT PURSUIT 2 did them a little better, but when you get off the road into the dirt or grass your car spins it's tires a little. When you get back on the pavement you can really feel the car gripping the asphalt. I like them better than the floaty rocket car physics of MIDNIGHT CLUB and BURNOUT. The physics are a combination of simulator and arcade. JUST AWESOME!!

WARNING TO REPLAY FANATICS: There is no REPLAY RACE feature in the game to review big events. I've only played the UNDERGROUND series on DEMO, but NEED FOR SPEED HOT PURSUIT 2 (which is my favorite racer of all time) had this feature. As do most other racing games. To me, this is a glaring oversight by EA. Having a racing game without a REPLAY is like not having one of the best features. What's the point of all the visual customization and car damage when you only see your car in the garage and at the start of a race and you're only gonna be looking at it from behind for the rest of the game? A lot of the fun is watching yourself drive after pulling off some ridiculously insane driving techniques or after causing some major damage in a police pursuit. My friends and I love to REPLAY awesome races, critique the driving, and pat ourselves on the back. It's part of the reward for a challenge well done. I mentioned this to a friend and he just groaned. I know it's not a simulator but it should be a STANDARD feature in ALL racing games. Do the race cameras eat up that much memory? I don't think so. EA blew it BIG TIME by not including this feature!! I was really having fun my first night at the game and had taken down 2 of the 15 rivals on THE BLACKLIST in CAREER MODE. But, not having a REPLAY RACE feature almost SINKS this game for me. This game would get a solid 9 from me, but not having a REPLAY brings down my score!! WHAT A DISAPPONITMENT!! I FEEL LIKE SOMEONE HAS CHOPPED OFF MY RIGHT ARM AND I CAN'T SHIFT MY RICE BURNER.

I also filled out the game registration at EA's website and have yet to receive the hints and cheat codes they promised by email. Juggleheads!!

If you can get past the fact that the game has no REPLAY feature, you're going to have a lot of fun. Me, I just can't get over it. I WANT MY REPLAY CAMERA!! I guess I'll have to turn off all the lights in my house, grab a bottle of Jack, and weep by myself in the corner.

ENJOY.
