NCAA Football 2006 Review

NCAA Football 2006

There's no disputing that EA owns the lion's share of the sports videogame market, especially with their recent acquisition of exclusive licenses for both pro and college football. Many (understandably) feared that this lack of competition would lead to lackluster games, i.e. each year's release being reduced to not much more than a full-price roster update. The team that developed NCAA 06 apparent set out to soothe gamers' fears and ended up rewarding us all with a top-notch college football game full of both subtle improvements and big-time innovations.

GAME MODES
When you put in the game you're immediately rewarded with a number of gameplay modes, some familiar (dynasty, single game) and some new (Race for the Heisman). The Race for the Heisman mode allows you to create a player and then guide him through tryouts for a scholarship, choosing a school, and then playing a career aimed at racking up the massive stats required to take home the hardware.Along the way, the main menu is your dorm room where you can review your accomplishments in the school newspaper, head off to the practice field (small mini-game drills), and check how your season stats compare versus the compeition. It's a little bit self-involved since you're emphasizing your individual campaign over that of the team, and make no mistake, you will have to put up unreal numbers to beat even the candidates with lesser stats. At the end, the presentation of the Heisman award ceremony is a little bit uninspired given that it's your main aim in this mode.Once you've finished your college days with or without the Heisman, you can port your created player over to Madden 06 to continue your career in the pros.

The real gem here is the dynasty mode where you control a school's program year-round.During the season, you get a great mix of responsibilities:you're the Athletic Director looking to avoid NCAA sanctions by disciplining problem players, you're the coach sorting out the depth chart while also courting high school recruits, and of course you're the players strapping on the pads each Saturday.In-season recruiting is one of the best additions to this year's game - it works basically like a poker game where you bet your finite time on how much attention each recruit needs and what kind of pitch will attract him to your school. If you leave it to one of your assistants to call him about the school's prestige, don't be surprise to watch him commit to your rival whose entire coaching staff showed up at his front door promising an immediate starting role. You also schedule recruit visits to your school, which can go a long way toward securing the signing if you beat up on your on-field opponent that week. There aren't any unsavory aspects of the NCAA represented here, i.e. you can't buy a recruit a car and so that he'll immediately sign.In fact, it's quite the opposite - if your team is under any NCAA scrutiny for rule violations or disciplinary problems, you'll find it much harder to attract blue chippers, so don't slack on your AD responsibilities when your superstar decides to stop going to classes. As the season winds down, you'll get your committments and start playing for the bowl rankings and player trophies.Weekly updates are presented as stories in Sports Illustrated magazine, which is a nice visual approach compared to traditionally dry menus.

OK, so your dynasty school just ran over the competition in their bowl game.Mission accomplished, right? As Lee Corso would say (and does say quite a bit in the game) "Uh-uh.I don't think so, Sweetheart."You've got to look at who's graduating, who's going pro, who you might be able to talk into staying (furthering the integration with Madden, you can even export that entire NCAA class to become the draft class for Madden's franchise mode). After that period is over, you hit the recruiting trail. The off-season recruiting works much like the in-season session but with even more detail. For instance, over the course of the several years, you can set up specific states as pipelines where the many of the top candidates will already be interested in your school on day one.Still, it's up to you as coach to figure out the right buttons to press to get the commit.Recruiting continues week by week for five weeks;however, if you're not into this much detail, you can opt to automatically have the computer do its best for you.Afterward, you check on your players' off-season skills progression, set the depth charts, redshirt players and then you're ready to suit up for the next upcoming season. You can also change up the team's non-conference games in order to bolster your strength of schedule or generate a new rivalry.

If you build up your school's program over the course of several seasons, you may receive an invitation to join a better conference and play in front of better crowds, all of which will attract better recruits.Of course, your head coach may also opt to take a higher-profile job elsewhere, so success is a dual-edged sword.

The game also solves one of my biggest pet peaves with prior NCAA games - you can finally just substitute made-up names for the players instead of going with QB#7 handing off to HB#23.I understand why legally you can't use these players' real names, but I never understood why you couldn't just go with any name instead of position and number.Of course we all know who that stellar Texas signalcaller or USC ultra-back is, so made-up names work just fine.If it really bothers you, you can take the time to edit them.

The main menu also features options to quickly set up one-time games, including all of the major rivalries, and even a goofy game played between mascots.

GAMEPLAY
In-game control is another highlight of NCAA 06 - you can perform a lot of cool moves with relatively simple and sensible button/stick combinations.Chief among these is the use of the right analog stick to perform juke moves on offense and big hits on defense.Earlier EA games turned the right stick into a Superman button where your player would defy the laws of physics as a reward for you merely touching the stick.Thankfully, this has been reeled back to more realistic limits while still keeping the excitement factor. You even have the option to zoom in and slow-mo particularly well-executed moves. You can't help but get hyped up when you look to be caught in the backfield by the other guy's blitzing backer only to spin, stiff arm him to the turf and then hurdle over him on your way to six.The control configurations are just about identical to those of Madden, making it easy to switch between the two (Madden obviously doesn't have the option offense).

Before the snap, the right analog stick allows viewing of matchups. This new feature zooms out to field width and shows player skill level and composure for particular matchups, e.g. wideouts vs. defensive backfield, o-line vs. d-line, or QB/RB vs. linebackers. It's a nice feature that allows you to see if you've got any potential mismatches to exploit from play to play, giving you an idea of which receiver to key on or maybe even enough insight to audible a different play.

But is NCAA 06 more than just Madden dusting off its old varsity jacket? To quote the coach once again, "Ab-so-lutely".The makers of the game paid painstaking attention to detail here, making NCAA 06 truly a payoff for fans of the college game. The stadiums are intricately rendered - I play my dynasty as a mid-major (Miami, OH) and even their field is accurate right down to the dorms in the distance being accurately drawn and properly placed. As best I can tell, all of the MAC fields are like this, so enjoyment of that home field experience isn't limited to just fans of the biggest programs at the biggest conferences. This year's game even includes division 1-AA and NAIA schools.Want more evidence of what a massive tribute to the college game this is?Here goes:Mascots?Check.Rivalry games?Check. All year-end trophies?Check.Fight songs?Well, NCAA 06 earns an incomplete for this one.Not all of the fight songs are there - some just get generic march music and drumlines - but I'm guessing that was more due to legal rights than effort by the developers.Fans of ESPN's College Gameday program will be happy to know that Lee Corso does his signature donning of the mascot's head during his pre-game pick.

GRAPHICS
Player models are about the best that this generation of console can deliver.Clarity and sharpness can suffer a bit when looking at a pile of players in the wide field view, but up-close, they look great. The real strength is in the massive stockpile of fluid, natural animations and the way that the game combines them.String together some impressive combinations of moves and you'll find yourself watching the replay over and over again (it's a shame that you can't save them).

The in-studio pre-game show is the biggest low-point, exposing EA's longtime problem with weird lighting of facial models.Everyone at the desk seems to be underlit, making them look sinister.Plus, their movements are surprisingly robotic. But in terms of importance, these problems are miniscule - the developers placed their efforts on the on-the-field action where it belongs.

SOUND
In-game commentary is provided by the familiar voices of Brad Nessler, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit. The game contains tons of commentary clips, but you will hear a lot of the same lines over and over again once you've played a few seasons. The game generally does a good job of mixing commentary up and also playing the right clips at the appropriate times.Nevertheless, if you're not a big fan of Corso and Herbstreit's Abbott-and-Costello routine,...Read more›

Madden NFL 07 Review

Madden NFL 07
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Note:The Madden 07 Wikipedia entry says that Madden can corrupt your entire memory card.I didn't believe this was possible, but it just happened to me.Our franchises and superstar mode files are gone along with files from my daughter's game.It turns out that the internet is full of confirmations of this bug.

Very disappointing.EA does not seem to have a solution to this problem.

------------------------------

Madden 2007 makes the most radical improvements to gameplay that I've seen in the series. It is absolutely worth the upgrade.

You are now freed from being only the QB or RB in the game. This opens new dimensions that were never possible before.Specifically, you can be any of the players on the offensive side of the ball. Now, instead of being the RB on a running play, I like playing fullback and blowing up a linebacker to let my RB gainbig yardage.

My son and I have played on the same team in two-player mode for years. He was QB and I was RB.This meant that the running game was boring for him since he'd just hand the ball off and let me go.Now, he can play the FB on an I-Formation and we can run down the field together. What a dramatic difference in fun and teamwork!

This freedem extends to the superstar mode.In the past, if you were a WR, you would watch your guy play his games. Now, you can actually play as the WR, TE, or any position on the field.

Madden 2007 is the most innovative upgrade in years and I highly recommend it!

Championship Manager 2010 (PC) Review

Championship Manager 2010
Average Reviews:

CM 2010, which I play on a Mac (A Mac version is available) is probably the better CM releases that I've played, the game play has been revamped to look much better although I think this takes a toll on your memory and the game gets sluggish within about 30-45 minutes of starting it. I need to quit and restart it to make it run smooth but thats not a HUGE inconvenience.

Like other CMs this allows you to take managerial control of a team and help them progress through the ranks. The new 3D game display engine is quite neat and the goals and saves are realistic. The game play isn't as tough as before and you can find your way around within 2-3 games if you are a veteran CM player. New players might take a little while longer but the general intuitiveness of the game helps a lot.

The team training sessions actually help and so do practicing set pieces! Scouting is a major improvement as you can concentrate your scouting resources of selected continents and bring up reasonable results.

All in all, it's quite a good purchase. I'd rate it 4.5 on 5 but because of the general sluggishness of the game and memory hogging, I'll give it a solid 4 on 5.

I wasn't able to use the download options on SI's website, as I was deployed to Iraq at the time, so Amazon's option to get a hard copy was vital.I got the game (in Iraq!) only a few days after it was released.

If you haven't played since before 2008 or 2007, you certainly need to pick up 2010.The version is a great leap forward.Visually, it's a lot like 2009.The game play continues to give you more power, but in a way that's easier to understand. One of the options I particularly enjoy is where, instead of moving sliders, you assign a player a "type" of position, based on where he is on the field. This will determine how he plays that position.Instead of just a Striker, you can have a Deep-Lying Forward, Poacher, Target Man, etc. It's (in my mind, at least) a more intuitive way of doing business.

I'm hopelessly addicted to FM2010.

FIFA Street 2 Review

FIFA Street 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First I want to counter everything the last reviewer said!!!!! He came here trying to catch your attention with fancy words and describtive writing in order to keep you from getting this game. Heres one thing, NEWS REPORTERS BELONG ON NEWSCASTS!!!!! This game is one of the very few EA soccer games I enjoy. For me it is usually all about the winning eleven series. NOT SUPER MARIO STRIKERS!!!! Now the game play is at first alittle chalenging. For example the buttons for a long pass or "high pass" as they are called in fifa street 2 and the buttons for shots are switched. This will be the bigest problem for avid soccer fans like myself. otherwise the gameplay is silky smooth. the trick stick ( right analog stick) helps players to easily control how humiliating your trick will be. pointing the stick down with perform a panna or putting the ball between a players legs. Pointing to the left or right passes the player from the right or left side. finnaly pointing up is you guessed it.... Puting the ball over the players head. theyre are a huge repetoir of tricks to perform so theyre is constant action. Also it has good music and many genres and yes i quote from true skool. A huge collection of players including my hero Ronaldinho Gaucho. Unfortunetely his signiture move is called Gaucho instead of hisfamous Elastico. I degress. But the best part about the tricks is the ability to replay the last trick over and over so that u can show off and also check the foot work in order to do the trick yourself.
Even though G4 says that this game lacks numerous modes of play, it has a very long story mode. The game are very fun especially when you unlock team captain mode were you manage your own team international were u choose a country to play for in order to win every locked item. and underground where you play the most skill teams and the hardest conditions.
This game forces you to create a custom player. This can be done in the rule the street mode or in the creation zone. You can also create a custom pitch and yes make it as ghetto as possible because hey that what street soccer is all about, and you can create a dream team of all your fav players.
The down sides of this game are the overall repetition of tricks, somewhat repetative game play in certain modes and a lack of options to customize pitches.
Over all i think this game isnt half bad. Worth 20 bucks even though i am saving for an ac milan jersey and need the money. It truly brings out the wonder of Footsal in a way that even Pele would be proud.

The title says it all. This is a great soccer game again. This is easily the best soccer game on the market. It amazes how each year additions can be made to the games that actually would make you want to buy the game again aside from roster changes.Yet THis is one of those games that necessetates getting the game again.Aside from killer graphics (the best you will see in a soccer game), you now have the ability to do three different types of kicks when trying to score a goal. That is incredible!!!!!Bottom Line:Do you like soccer at all?Own this brilliant, fun game.

ESPN NFL 2K5 Review

ESPN NFL 2K5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Though it's a little too early to tell, I think it's pretty safe to say that ESPN NFL 2K5 will finally reign supreme in it's yearly battle as "Best Football Game of '04," from the legendary Madden Series. It's hard to believe that it was only a mere five years ago, when the NFL 2K Series first appeared on the cutesy Sega Dreamcast. My have they grown... No longer content with second place in the football console wars, Sega pulled out all the stops and released a living, breathing, sweating, trash-talking, smash mouth football game. If there ever was an idea of the "perfect" football game, this would have to be it. In fact, so much so, that purchasing the anticipated Madden 2005 seems like a waste of money. But hey, I'm a hard-core football fanatic, and I have no qualms splurging seventy bucks on both football titles. Regardless, I can easily see myself playing this game till the Pro Bowl when I finally remember that Madden game I purchased oh so long ago, still un-opened, collecting dust on my shelf.

The presentation on this game is absolutely phenomenal. Last year, I mentioned that NFL 2K4 did an outstanding job utilizing the ESPN license. This year is no exception. Sega should give seminars on taking advantage of a licensing goldmine such as ESPN...*cough*...Atari...*cough*..."Enter the Matrix"... The pre-game, in-game, half-time, and post-game presentations are flawless, albeit the virtual "Boomer" is a little bit creepy. Playing the game is like watching an actual NFL broadcast on the world's leading sports channel. Statistics in the multitudes will fly across the screen during the course of a game, replays from every which angle will be shown in a tiny window off to the side as you choose your next play, and the ingenious VIP system, which acts like a blueprint of your and your opponent's play calling tendencies, allows you to prepare in detail for the current or following game. Throw in the ability to schedule the tone of player meetings (angry or maybe encouraging) and allotting prep time, either through film sessions or a specific physical training regimen (arms, legs, biceps, quads), for your players in order to improve their ratings, and you have a game that puts you front and center in the driver seat of a football team. Granted, I'm only mentioning only a handful of the vast variety of features that are available at your fingertips, which is only a testimony to how deep this game really is.

The NFL 2K series has long been known for it's superior graphics engine. Fortunately, over the years, the series has become less of a one trick pony and more of a complete football experience. Regardless, NFL 2K5 is hands down the most realistic and beautiful looking football game I've ever seen. Players are size proportionate with rippling muscles and veins. Jerseys are colorful and vibrant and twist and wrinkle at the right spots. Player faces are dead on, and smile or frown depending on the game situation. Cheerleaders look less like ghouls and more like Barbie dolls. An example of the great graphics engine in this game was during a replay of an interception my defensive player grabbed in the end zone during a game. As I zoomed in, I actually caught tiny particles of dirt and grass flying around the cleats of my player as he scrambled to his feet after making a diving interception. Dirt and grass! Why is this a revelation, you say? Only because it would have been hard to notice such detail without the benefit of the zooming button during the replay.

Game play is where this game all comes together. Overall, it's basically the same as last years model which isn't a knock since it was great to begin with. If it ain't broke, then don't fix it, as I like to say. Like Madden there are three play calling windows, the top allotted for defensive side of the ball and the bottom being for the offensive side. The variety of plays are abundant and nicely varied. Running is still easy with a stud running back which makes it imperative to choose the All-Pro difficulty if you're looking for a true challenge. The AI is more stingy and intelligent on this setting without being frustrating. A major gripe I had with last year's game was the poor tackling even on the most difficult setting. This year, it's fixed, not only making individual tackling a possibility, but allowing you to choose the type of tackle (bone-rattling or shove) you want to unleash. Also added is an evade move that can be utilized by the quarterback if he's about to be sacked by tapping the right control stick. The player animations are a sight to behold, especially during running plays. Watching a running back scrape for an extra yard or two after being tackled, a defensive end grab for the leg or a quarterback, and a cornerback leap for an interception just brings tears to your eyes.

The NFL 2K series has grown tenfold in it's short existence. So much so that I think it will be a challenge for Sega to top what has to be the perfect football game for next year's entry. Though I'm sure that Madden 2005 will still lead in overall sales, I think it's safe to say that ESPN NFL 2K5 will lead as an overall football gaming experience. Much congrats to Sega.

FIFA Soccer 07 Review

FIFA Soccer 07
Average Reviews:

Fifa 07 hasn't changed much in terms of its graphics or commentary. They've added only one new league -- the Turkish league. But it only looks similar on the surface. Actual game play has been completely overhauled. Contested headers don't automatically go to one player, crosses have some curve to them. It's no longer easy to score by a straight cross from the corner. There are more volleys. The ball moves in more realistic ways. Deflectionssometimes go in the air. Shots result in a greater variety of visual outcomes.
So, playing this game is a lot more realistic. It's a lot like the winning eleven series, except that it has the benefit of all of the official league licenses and all of the other nice stuff that the series has always had. I haven't explored the manager option yet, so I can't really comment on that. Overall, a great upgrade.

...
I do own both these game and have played them extensively and let me put down what I think I like about both games so that it could help you decide which one to buy.Personally, I would recommend buying both :
First let me start off my saying both are excellent games but both are truly 2 different games. For those of you who are use to madden, dont think you can jump right in and play nfl2k3, and vice versa, both play completely different.
Madden2003:
-----------
This game is more for the casual football player.Madden is very polished and has options galore. If your into stat tracking, Madden is the game for you then. This game is very deep in all areas which will appeal to many people. It is truly the game for the person who just wants to pick up and play and not really have to think football. It is more of a family game in some aspects because of it's simplicty.
Plus':
-----
Graphics : Very good graphics, player models are done uniquelyand stadiums are dead on perfect in this game. Also nice touches to the field textures and postplay animations. The game is very polished graphically, it really looks like a masterpiece.
Gameplay : very easy to pick up gameplay.Momentum based physics adds a lot to this game where it keeps the game realistic in terms of how players get hit and how they respond to tackles. This is truly more of an offensive minded game and that equates to more fun for some.Stat tracking is the best bar none in madden and the options can't be matched in any other game.
Sound : The football sounds and extra sounds are done very well in this game.Al Micheals and John Madden give the game a professional feel when annoucing althougth sometimes they get reptitive.
Minus'
-----
The only drawback in this game would be that the game is more cpu based than user based. So you can do everything right but if the cpu decides that it wants to complete a pass this down, well , it'll complete a pass that down.Sometimes the game may feel a bit too scripted.
---------------------------------------------------------------
NFL2K3
-------
This game is truly for the football minded technician or football minded coach. In this game, you have to know how to read the defensive formations, the kind of offensive plays you run, and the kind of players/teams you control. The best word I can use to describe this game is INTENSITY, because it is truly like you are playing an NFL game. This game is more of a user based game, so everything is up to the player rather than the computer to succeed. It's like putting your football mind into each player you control.
Plus':
GRAPHICS : Excellent player models and stadiums.Uses the ESPN license so it's based off of SPORTSCENTER and ESPN telecast, very profesional tv style look to it. Excellent Animations. Excellent player faces.
GAMEPLAY : More user based than cpu based. You must know football to win at this game. It's more of a head coaches game controlling the players which adds intensity and sense of professionalism to it.Passing and running the ball must be done correctly or you will eat turf.Defense is incredibly protrayed in this game where user can control any aspect of the defender.Gameplay wise this is more of a Defensive minded game.
Sounds : Top Notch second to none. The annoucers in this series have always been excellent and you really like to listen to them.Football sounds are done well too and crowd variance is teriffic.
Minus':
Only drawback for some could be that the learning curve for this game is very high.Don't expect to get this game and figure it out in a few minutes. You can't just mash buttons together and expect to win.It is truly for the football fanatic.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Well I hope this helps.Again, I would recommend buying both games since they play so different.I would compare these to games to say buying either a BMW or a MERCEDES.Both are great cars but have their own unqiue qualities to them that make them great rides.Enjoy!

Can't find a review anywhere for this game so here I go writing one.First off, the game is fun. In a weird way it reminds me of the old arcade game NFL Blitz.A lot of cheesy fun, power ups, and a simple play selection. The graphics are cartoony but passable. There are some "Glitches" when it shows replays and sometimes the announcer will call an incomplete pass when you really did catch the ball.If you are a serious sports video game guy/girl (Own a Madden anything) this is NOT for you. For me though it was perfect. Something I could play with the kids. Simple and fun like NFL Blitz 99 or 10 Yard Fight (there I dated myself).

Worldwide Soccer Manager 2008 Review

Worldwide Soccer Manager 2008
Average Reviews:

Having played this series since the end of the previous century, this version is the best yet. For long time fans, there have been plenty of tweaks and additions to make the game that much more addictive and consuming. For virtual newbies, the game may at first seem daunting in its complexity. Fear not, SI has your back. This year they've included a tutorial to help get your feet wet. They also got a new assistant function that will give you context sensitive suggestions. Once you've got your bearing, it becomes a bit like the Microsoft Office Paper Clip. Fortunately, it's a feature easily turned off.

In general, the game play is fantastic. All the aspects of an international career in management are present. You've got your first team, your reserve squad and a youth set-up. You train your players to keep them fit and make them better. You design your tactics the way YOU want your team to play. Then you set them loose on game day to watch them ignore your best laid plans and get trounced. ;)

Be warned: The popularity of this game is not based on fancy graphics or fast-twitch muscle fiber. To succeed at this game you've got to be patient and attentive to detail. It's very much a marathon, not a sprint.

Madden NFL 09 Review

Madden NFL 09

Here's my review of Madden 2009 for the PS2.

First off, I'm not really concerned with the gameplay.I'm one of those people that only plays the Franchise Mode (I call it Franchise Mode, I know some refer to it as Owner Mode, but I use Franchise).Within a year I might play an actual game maybe a half dozen to a dozen times, that's it.In Franchise Mode I simulate all the games, I LOVE to act as a GM/Owner making all the decisions. So with that being said I'm basing my review with the bulk of my emphasis on the Franchise Mode.I'll touch a little on the gameplay first.

- The gameplay seems like the same old Madden a basic re-hash of last year's version or the version two years ago, or the version three years ago (you get my point).

- Commentary is the same, Madden & Michaels. The PS3 version has Hammond & Collinsworth. All the new added features you'll hear about, i.e. Madden IQ, Rewind, and the new graphic effects are all available on the PS3 version not the PS2 version.Nothing new is added execpt for the Fair-Play feature.I do think they added more people/personel on the sidelines during a game.

- The Rosters are updated but updated very poorly (Indiana Jones 3).Like a recent reviewer said they don't even keep past stats available for seasons players had before '08.All it says is N/A.Strahan is still a Giant, Dan Klecko is the only FB for the Eagles, Mike Hart isn't in the game with the Colts, Favre is nowhere to be found, and Pacman "Adam" Jones isn't even on the Free Agent roster.Heck Cedric Benson is still on the Bears roster, that's how bad it is.A lot of updating by you is needed.Plus if you don't have an internet connection you'll have to make Favre yourself. For the Eagles I had to cut Dan Klecko, and go get Lawton from the Colts to play FB for the Eagles.Lawton is currently an Eagle, but Jason Davis isn't in the game.So I had to give the Colts some b.s. player just to have a FB on their roster since I had to get Lawton to the Eagles since Klecko isn't an FB anymore, he's back at DT.Oh yeah getting the rosters up to date takes a ton of time and patience.

- One pet peeve I have is that EA doesn't even update their interface on the game. Some of the NEW features added in the past Madden's are still featured as NEW features.Player Weapons is not NEW, it was available how long ago?!Gosh!!

- Ok, the Franchise Mode.First off, I will say I love the new Decade Scoring System. At the end of the off-season right before Training Camp you get a score card evaluating your past season.Your score card has points and grades on it ranging from if your team made the playoffs, average attendance throughout the season, net profit, how many pro bowlers you had, how many rivalry games you won, etc, etc. Then you are given a grade or a score for each category and a total is added up, and each season you can compare each Decade Score Card and the points you earn. It's really neat, puts even more pressure on you to do well in that particular season.

The trade deadline glitch is gone. You can't trade your 1st round pick for the worst team in the league's 1st round pick anymore.Trades are graded now depending on your record at the deadline.Makes things harder, no easy way out anymore to stack your dynasty with multiple 1st round picks. One thing I do have a problem with is the Draft Grading in Madden.I always get an F, no matter who I pick. The Draft Grades emphasize your Decade Score Card and getting an F every season really hurts your point total.

During the Draft now the computer will approach you with selection trades.I like this.I had no idea they added this till, I was in my draft and all of a sudden while it is cycling through picks a window pops up asking me if I'll accept this trade.Very cool. You can review the trade, accept it, or reject it.

The loading times in the Franchise off-season are a lot quicker. On the load after the retired players screen when players are getting new roles and roles taken away it's better.Instead of loading through each player now it loads specific to each team. You can't go away anymore to get a cup of coffee while it loads for 5 minutes, it's more like 1 minute then done.Same with the Roster Management screen, loads quicker.

Pretty much that's it, the rest of the Franchise is the same.Nothing new, but given the quicker loading times and the advent of the Decade Scoring System, it's still a lot of fun.Highly recommend it if you are a Franchise gamer like me.

FIFA 08 Soccer Review

It's been a while, several years in fact since EA Fifa has shown anything new, they tweak a little here and there but for all intents and purposes up until now not a lot has changed. In most peoples honest opinion Winning eleven has been the best franchise for this sport since early 2000 and with some great reasons, the feel of the game just wasn't there for EA, they always had the scoop on the graphics and obviously the team names but not much else..until this year.

I must admit when I played the demo I was ehh..but i took a chance cause of the long wait for the installment of winning eleven and went out and got a copy of EA fifa 08...and am I glad I did.

EA has turned the game on it's head this year, firstly the graphics are very good indeed, crisp characters all of which are easy identifiable, they even managed to get some of the bigger stars running patterns stances and so on right...not an easy task...then we come the game itself.

What really does it this year for fifa is a few thigns which i hope will revolutionize the way the game is played, what I'm talking about is the pro camera and the pro player mode...

So your on a field playing soccer you make runs, you get ignored, you call for the ball and make a run and find the ball delivered in your path before your closed down and slip it inside to your teamate who belts it into the net, sound about right in soccer..well Fifa 08 has covered this perfectly, playing Fifa this year is like actually being out on the field. absolutely superb idea, you know can control just one player and make the runs score the goals and make the passes while everything else is going on around you. Your level is counted meaning that if you are out of position lose the ball a lot or get constantly caught offside your rating is gonna drop so for the first time in any soccer game anywhere you play as a team and not a dribbler cause this is real, and in real soccer i rarely see someone gather the ball in their own half dribble the entire team and score..this year Fifa is making it real.

So hats off to that idea, the sound is the usual witty dialogue from Andy Gray and simply adds to the realism, the sound overall is decent if not outstanding, where are the boo's when an opponent touches the ball, where are the screams of the manager on the sideline? these are just things i hope is covered in the next installment...

More teams...yes finally they gave us our teams back, now granted not everyone wants to play as Derry City ( Ireland league ) but this is a world game so all teams should be covered, think of the european championship, not every tie is gonna be aginst Real Madrid, Man Utd, AC Milan, in real llife you'l get drawn against the smaller leagues too and thank gawd this has been brought back from the measily 6 leagues we had last year...so well done EA for that too.

The downside of the game, the referee, it still seems like he has swallowed his whistle, if you try a slide tackle he blow it up 9 time out've 10, so far I've only tried slide tackling 6 time, 5 of which was a foul and 1 the ref played the advantage, they probably need to work in this for the next installment, possibly a good idea is to have instead of a generic ref, to have an assortment of refs and linesmen, some more strict than others, some prone to mistakes etc, it would make the game a little more exciting if you were playing against your arch rival and saw the referee you had for todays game was prone to calling the game wrong every now and then..then after the game you'd be furious ..sound like real life soccer? But maybe this is something EA can work on for next year aswell. With a whole set of new moves, shimmy's and interesting variation of goals you can score, EA has really raised the bar which is great for gaming now it's upto Winning Eleven to dig deep and try to take back it's crown, but i have a feeling This king won't be de-throned for quite some time.

Well done EA,..Long live the King!

World Soccer Winning Eleven 6 International Review

Aaaaaah, where to begin? For years, the only people priviledged enoughto have been able to play the internationally-renowned (and massively pirated) Winning Eleven series were either European or Japanese. At last, Americans will be able to witness what any hard-core soccer fanatic will immediately confirm as the definitive soccer simulation on any platform.Forget FIFA.The wizards at Konami have created a monster with this game, allowing the player to explore the infinite combinations of tactics and to create their own personalized style within the game. This is no turbo-button mashing affair; every button on the controller has a distinct function that noticeably enhances the effectiveness of one's game without being overly-powerful.For example, there are THREE turbo buttons: slow, medium, and high, each which requires practice to fully master without one being "better" than the others.Speed sprinters like Henry or Shevchenko may be the fastest runners with the High Turbo button, but the ball control by dribble masters like Bergkamp or Ronaldinho (and even Maradona!) on the Slow and Medium Levels can be just as, if not more, deadly! There are THOUSANDS of animations as well, ensuring that each player looks and MOVES like their real-life counterpart.Beckham's gangly trot and free kick animations are just a couple of examples to be found within this sports opus, not to mention some truly spectacular goal-scoring kicks that are as rare as they are incredible.
Take it from me:this is the greatest sports game that has ever been programmed in the history of the video game.I've been a sports nut for 20 years now, starting with 10 Yard Fight and Nintendo's Baseball, and graduating to Cyberball and the original John Madden Football on the Sega Genesis (the reigning champion at that time).I was addicted to the revolutionary NHL Hockey for many years, but as of late, have been somewhat disappointed by the level of evolution that these games have exhibited.Madden has improved, but the FIFA and NHL series have remained stuck in a sort of 16-bit vacuum that has prevented them from truly taking advantage of these next-generation consoles.Winning Eleven is the new heir to the throne, and I invite ANYONE to at LEAST rent this game, despite their lack of interest in the sport (I admit that the game will most probably not sell well in the US).You will not regret it (and you have been warned...).

I've personally purchased every FIFA game since 2001 and played the game since it first appeared on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. That's over a decade of yearly iterations plus the "World Cup" and "UEFA" editions. I know what I'm talking about.

FIFA 08 on the PS3 is the best FIFA game ever to be released on a Sony system. The graphics and music are top-notch, but that's standard for the game's last few years.

Where the game breaks new ground is in the physics department. Never have professional athletes been honoured with such life-like avatars. Every kick, deak and tackle looks and more importantly feels like the real thing. The new shooting mechanics are inspired as are the ball physics. Combined these two components push the realism through the roof.

The list of impressive attributes continues: loading times are nearly non-existent, Create-a-player is more robust, the arena interface (also found in EA's NBA LIVE 08) is simple and fun and the addition of custom formations is a long awaited boon.

Finally the return of "The Lounge", the tweaking of "Manager Mode" and the addition of the "Be-A-Pro Mode"(which allows the user to control only one player during the match)ups the replay value exponentially.

FIFA 08 is stellar - really an awesome buy for anyone looking for a great sports game. My only complaint involves the lacklustre commentary, which despite being broad in scope is less than enthusiastic.

That small flaw aside, EA has a real winner here. You will not be disappointed, I guarantee it.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like most people I know struggled through the flaws in past FIFA series.I read reviews and kept hearing the name Winning Eleven and so I decided to go for it and bought Winning Eleven 7.The game was great but Winning Eleven 8 is even better.
-Improved gameplay
-Deeper Master League
-More Licensed Club Teams and Real Player Names

I own FIFA 2005 and Winning Eleven 8 is much better (except for the online gameplay).
The question is, should I buy Winning Eleven 8 or FIFA 2005?
The games are very different and one game might suit one person more than another but here are reasons to buy one or the other...

FIFA 2005
-Online Play: This feature is great.Playing the computer can become rather boring after a while but being able to play anyone anywhere in the world at you ability is amazing.I played online for a while but became sick of other players using certain tricks or flaws in the game to win like scoring off every kickoff.
-Career Mode: This mode is very deep with every officially licensed league. The benefits is you can switch leagues and teams throughout your career (unlike WE8) but the computer is so predictable and easy to play against that I didn't have the patience to complete the first season.
-Graphics: The graphics are amazing with players, jerseys, and stadiums appearing like it was television.

Winning Eleven 8
-Gameplay: The gameplay is amazing, it has improved from WE7 and the computer AI is much more difficult.A new 6 star difficulty is available to unlock and I don't see this game becoming too easy for anybody. The crowd's participation makes you sweat pushing for an equaliser or holding a one goal lead.Playing with two people is much better than FIFA 2005 with quicker game play and no cheap goals. You'll play for hours with a friend who is at the same skill as you.
-Graphics: Personally I think the graphics are almost as good as FIFA.The difference doesn't bother me except for the uniforms which are kind of plain on the unlicensed teams. The jerseys for unlicensed teams are the same colors but don't have logos or sponsors on them.
-Master League: It is even more advanced and has more features than WE7.Although their isn't license leagues and cups, it does replicate real soccer.Yes, Manchester United is in the game as for the top 100 or so European clubs including licensed Italian, Spanish, and Dutch leagues. Each league has a cup and there is a WEFA Championship (Champion's League) and WEFA Master's Cup (UEFA Cup). With all new Master League edit mode, you can change which teams are in what leagues and create a "Power League" which is very entertaining. All in all this feature is worth buying the game itself.
If you love European Football and know a little bit about the teams and their players, than Winning Eleven 8 is for you.If you like arcade style soccer, buy FIFA 2005.True soccer fans will love this game and the more people that buy it, the more licensed leagues will ensue in future versions of Winning Eleven, so buy it today!

Madden NFL 09 Review

Madden NFL 09
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the ultimate football game for the Wii, hands down. EA got this one right. If you've played 07 and 08, then it's basically the same game control-wise, but don't let that fool you. On the surface, it may seem to be the same, but when you launch the game, there is so much more there.

First off, All-Play. What is it? It allows the novice to get into the game and start playing without having to worry about learning all the different control moves to play the game. You can have Madden suggest all the plays for you, you can use a simplified playbook with common plays or else, you can use the team's playbook and have at your disposal an arsenal of plays to beat down your opponent with. You can switch between the different playbook options easily while in the game.

Whether you are a rookie or an All-Pro player, everyone can compete against each other with their own style, at home and online! Oh, and no Friend codes are necessary to play online! Great move, EA!

Control-wise, you can just hike the ball, run it with a few moves (jukes, spins, etc) and pass it to the open receiver all with minimal controller moves and/or button presses. When passing, look for the receiver whose icon turns green and swing the Wiimote forward to pass it to that receiver. You don't have to select him to do it. As you get better at the game, you can then move up to the more complex controls from last year's game.

The all-new Call Your Shots is the hot route option on steroids! In this case, you select your receiver whose route you wish to modify and then using the Wiimote, you draw your own route for him to run! This option is NOT available on any other console. It is specific to the Wii and it's easy and it works great. You can still use the old hot-route option if you want to, but why would you?

When you score a TD or a big hit, jump up and start dancing as hard as you can, waving your nunchuck and Wiimote around using different gestures. The more you do it, the more you boost that player's gameplay rating and it gets the crowd into the game.

5 on 5 mode is akin to playing backyard football. You start at midfield and have 4 plays to score a TD. It's over the top and fun. Unfortunately, it can't be played online.

The graphics, while still PS2-ish, have been upgraded on the Wii and look better than previous versions on the Wii. Heck, it definitely looks better than the 2008 PC version. It's not next-gen but what really makes this game shine is the ability for novices, intermediate and hard-core Madden-ites to be able to play this game. I've never had more fun with Madden than I have had with this version and I'm in no way an expert on this game. I can barely play on All-Pro and All-Madden is just nuts for me, so now I can hang pretty tough and learn what to look for as Madden gives me tips.

And finally, the passing bug of years past is gone! They fixed this and refined the way it registers your movements so that it seems much more natural. Also, players getting stuck seems to have been removed as well. I haven't experienced it yet, though, but I've read accounts of others seeing it once in a great while, but nothing like in the previous versions.

Now, why 4 out of 5 for the game overall? First off, the Miis. The refs are Miis. Madden is a Mii (that is scary!) and you cannot turn this option off. I believe it's Nintendo's way of trying to make the game appeal to the family crowd and it probably works. I didn't find it too bad, but I wish it could have been an option to turn on or off. But, it definitely plays into the way Nintendo wants to market the Wii which is it's a family/group system that encourages people to play together, so it's not all bad.

I'm having problems when receiving a pass manually. You must raise both the nunchuck and the Wiimote up at the same time to make your player reach/jump for a pass. I've practiced this as much as I can and I just can't seem to get it to work consistently. In fact, one time I swung both controls up so fast that the cord from the nunchuck to the Wiimote came up and smacked me in the face. OUCH! I guess I just need to keep practicing this one, but all the other motion controls work great.

Finally, 5 on 5 not being online brings the score down a bit as well.

Overall, this game is worth it and is deserving of the 5-star fun factor rating. It's the best Madden yet for Wii and it shows EA listened to the gripes from people about last year's version.
