(More customer reviews)Konami's World Soccer Winning Eleven series continues to impress with this new installment. There are plenty of new features including a brand new physics system that allows your players to move around the pitch more realistically. This also prevents easy goals as your shots are no longer automatically aimed at the goal, you'll now have to trigger your own shots with greater accuracy. The controls are tighter than ever before that even the most skilled Winning Eleven players will have to adjust to the new style. Not to fear as this isn't a burden, it gives the game even more of a realistic feel. Players in the game will lose control of the ball as in real life and jostle for position when a cross in coming in or a clearance has been made. One problem in the new features is the amount of calls by referees for simple fouls that really shouldn't stop the game from continuing.

There are 138 clubs and 57 International teams present, but be aware that many of them are not licensed and do not carry their official kits or crests. But there is still plenty of new licensed clubs and kits most notably the addition of big name clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Rangers, Celtic, and Galatasaray. Licensed leagues are present including the Italian Serie A, Dutch Eredivisie, and Spanish Primera. This includes all of their clubs with the exception of Italy's Cagliari Calcio. There are plenty of stadiums to choose from all of which are highly detailed and true to their real life counterparts, with the exception of some official names. Anything that isn't licensed in the game however, can be edited to precision in the expansive Edit mode feature within the game. This is the cornerstone of the Winning Eleven series aside from the exciting game play. In Edit mode you can change and alter anything from boots, stadiums, kits, crests, players, and much more.

The list of moves that can be performed in the game are seemingly unlimited and each play a great deal of depth and precision to your own "game." Many of them can be triggered easily, while others can be quite difficult and require practice. This is where the game's excellent training mode comes in as it will help novices and veterans alike in showing off some key moves, passing drills, and other training skills alike. The graphics are wonderful, with great player models and backgrounds. The crowd could use some work however, and player faces could use a bit more emotion than they currently express in situations. Kits are spot on and look great, most of which are so detailed you can see the mesh holes and minor details perfectly.

Another key feature is online play, which most gamers these days want in a game. The online play is just as expansive but your saved edits in the game cannot be used online. This has a good and bad side. The good is that nobody will be able to cheat by using statistical edited players to help them win. The bad side is that the rosters in the game are so out of date or incorrect that you may be a bit disappointed that edits cannot be used for online play. My suggestion is to just invite a bunch of friends over and have a great time playing multi-player.

Now for the replay value of this series, the Master League. This is where you can take one of the clubs present in the game and turn them into a football powerhouse. You will go through the basics of taking care of a club through a generic UEFA style career facing against other clubs that are present in your division. You'll have great times transferring players around and keeping things fresh on your roster so that each match you play will be just as exciting and keep you playing season after season. You can even save your Master League club and use them in a match in exhibition mode. You can even link up your PSP and use the club on there for mobile action. Each match you play and every league or cup you win you'll earn WE Points that can be used to open up new items in the WE Shop. The large WE Shop is filled with plenty of goodies to open up including match balls, players, classic teams and more. Aside from all of these great features there is a new weather type where you can play in snowy climates. The commentary also lacks depth but it is forgivable.

Personally I can't stop playing this game as it takes up many hours of my day not only playing matches but editing and opening up new items. The price is definitely worth the purchase. Here is my rating system for World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 International.

(More customer reviews)I wasn't able to use the download options on SI's website, as I was deployed to Iraq at the time, so Amazon's option to get a hard copy was vital.I got the game (in Iraq!) only a few days after it was released.

If you haven't played since before 2008 or 2007, you certainly need to pick up 2010.The version is a great leap forward.Visually, it's a lot like 2009.The game play continues to give you more power, but in a way that's easier to understand.One of the options I particularly enjoy is where, instead of moving sliders, you assign a player a "type" of position, based on where he is on the field.This will determine how he plays that position.Instead of just a Striker, you can have a Deep-Lying Forward, Poacher, Target Man, etc.It's (in my mind, at least) a more intuitive way of doing business.

I'm hopelessly addicted to FM2010.

He came here trying to catch your attention with fancy words and describtive writing in order to keep you from getting this game. Heres one thing, NEWS REPORTERS BELONG ON NEWSCASTS!!!!! This game is one of the very few EA soccer games I enjoy. For me it is usually all about the winning eleven series. NOT SUPER MARIO STRIKERS!!!! Now the game play is at first alittle chalenging. For example the buttons for a long pass or "high pass" as they are called in fifa street 2 and the buttons for shots are switched. This will be the bigest problem for avid soccer fans like myself. otherwise the gameplay is silky smooth. the trick stick ( right analog stick) helps players to easily control how humiliating your trick will be. pointing the stick down with perform a panna or putting the ball between a players legs. Pointing to the left or right passes the player from the right or left side. finnaly pointing up is you guessed it.... Puting the ball over the players head. theyre are a huge repetoir of tricks to perform so theyre is constant action.Also it has good music and many genres and yes i quote from true skool. A huge collection of players including my hero Ronaldinho Gaucho. Unfortunetely his signiture move is called Gaucho instead of hisfamous Elastico. I degress. But the best part about the tricks is the ability to replay the last trick over and over so that u can show off and also check the foot work in order to do the trick yourself.
Even though G4 says that this game lacks numerous modes of play, it has a very long story mode. The game are very fun especially when you unlock team captain mode were you manage your own team international were u choose a country to play for in order to win every locked item. and underground where you play the most skill teams and the hardest conditions.
This game forces you to create a custom player. This can be done in the rule the street mode or in the creation zone. You can also create a custom pitch and yes make it as ghetto as possible because hey that what street soccer is all about, and you can create a dream team of all your fav players.
The down sides of this game are the overall repetition of tricks, somewhat repetative game play in certain modes and a lack of options to customize pitches.
Over all i think this game isnt half bad. Worth 20 bucks even though i am saving for an ac milan jersey and need the money. It truly brings out the wonder of Footsal in a way that even Pele would be proud.

FIFA Soccer 07 Review

(More customer reviews)Fifa 07 hasn't changed much in terms of its graphics or commentary. They've added only one new league -- the Turkish league. But it only looks similar on the surface. Actual game play has been completely overhauled. Contested headers don't automatically go to one player, crosses have some curve to them. It's no longer easy to score by a straight cross from the corner. There are more volleys. The ball moves in more realistic ways. Deflectionssometimes go in the air. Shots result in a greater variety of visual outcomes.
So, playing this game is a lot more realistic. It's a lot like the winning eleven series, except that it has the benefit of all of the official league licenses and all of the other nice stuff that the series has always had. I haven't explored the manager option yet, so I can't really comment on that. Overall, a great upgrade.

Graphics: 3/5Why: I think the players were well modeled, the frames were bad, lots of glitches, in most shots players wouldn't even get near ball, this is not the game for gamers who like games with state of art graphics.
Music: 4/5Why:Good music, but low variety.
Replay; 3/5 Why: This is the game you would play or beat in 1 day, playing seasons in multiplayer is great, but not if you playing alone you will probably put it in a shelf, and if some friends go to your house, they will like want to play multiplayer, that's it.Poor story mode aswell.
Between other is the reason like i could make a goal in just a corner like 98% of the time, no matter how good the team is.
I think the makers could've done a little more on graphics and this would be a best seller, aswell on replay value.
Recomend for: This is not a game for a diehard fan of soccer, it would just make you wish to throw your xbox away when it's the games fault.
This is a rental, buy it if you ddon't care how bad the glitches are.
Also don't get me wrong it ain't that bad and has good ideas, but the tricks ain't in variety aswell.

For long time fans, there have been plenty of tweaks and additions to make the game that much more addictive and consuming. For virtual newbies, the game may at first seem daunting in its complexity. Fear not, SI has your back. This year they've included a tutorial to help get your feet wet. They also got a new assistant function that will give you context sensitive suggestions. Once you've got your bearing, it becomes a bit like the Microsoft Office Paper Clip. Fortunately, it's a feature easily turned off.

In general, the game play is fantastic. All the aspects of an international career in management are present. You've got your first team, your reserve squad and a youth set-up. You train your players to keep them fit and make them better. You design your tactics the way YOU want your team to play. Then you set them loose on game day to watch them ignore your best laid plans and get trounced. ;)

Be warned: The popularity of this game is not based on fancy graphics or fast-twitch muscle fiber. To succeed at this game you've got to be patient and attentive to detail. It's very much a marathon, not a sprint.

FIFA 08 Soccer Review

(More customer reviews)It's been a while, several years in fact since EA Fifa has shown anything new, they tweak a little here and there but for all intents and purposes up until now not a lot has changed. In most peoples honest opinion Winning eleven has been the best franchise for this sport since early 2000 and with some great reasons, the feel of the game just wasn't there for EA, they always had the scoop on the graphics and obviously the team names but not much else..until this year.

I must admit when I played the demo I was ehh..but i took a chance cause of the long wait for the installment of winning eleven and went out and got a copy of EA fifa 08...and am I glad I did.

EA has turned the game on it's head this year, firstly the graphics are very good indeed, crisp characters all of which are easy identifiable, they even managed to get some of the bigger stars running patterns stances and so on right...not an easy task...then we come the game itself.

What really does it this year for fifa is a few thigns which i hope will revolutionize the way the game is played, what I'm talking about is the pro camera and the pro player mode...

So your on a field playing soccer you make runs, you get ignored, you call for the ball and make a run and find the ball delivered in your path before your closed down and slip it inside to your teamate who belts it into the net, sound about right in soccer..well Fifa 08 has covered this perfectly, playing Fifa this year is like actually being out on the field. absolutely superb idea, you know can control just one player and make the runs score the goals and make the passes while everything else is going on around you. Your level is counted meaning that if you are out of position lose the ball a lot or get constantly caught offside your rating is gonna drop so for the first time in any soccer game anywhere you play as a team and not a dribbler cause this is real, and in real soccer i rarely see someone gather the ball in their own half dribble the entire team and score..this year Fifa is making it real.

So hats off to that idea, the sound is the usual witty dialogue from Andy Gray and simply adds to the realism, the sound overall is decent if not outstanding, where are the boo's when an opponent touches the ball, where are the screams of the manager on the sideline? these are just things i hope is covered in the next installment...

More teams...yes finally they gave us our teams back, now granted not everyone wants to play as Derry City ( Ireland league ) but this is a world game so all teams should be covered, think of the european championship, not every tie is gonna be aginst Real Madrid, Man Utd, AC Milan, in real llife you'l get drawn against the smaller leagues too and thank gawd this has been brought back from the measily 6 leagues we had last year...so well done EA for that too.

The downside of the game, the referee, it still seems like he has swallowed his whistle, if you try a slide tackle he blow it up 9 time out've 10, so far I've only tried slide tackling 6 time, 5 of which was a foul and 1 the ref played the advantage, they probably need to work in this for the next installment, possibly a good idea is to have instead of a generic ref, to have an assortment of refs and linesmen, some more strict than others, some prone to mistakes etc, it would make the game a little more exciting if you were playing against your arch rival and saw the referee you had for todays game was prone to calling the game wrong every now and then..then after the game you'd be furious ..sound like real life soccer? But maybe this is something EA can work on for next year aswell.With a whole set of new moves, shimmy's and interesting variation of goals you can score, EA has really raised the bar which is great for gaming now it's upto Winning Eleven to dig deep and try to take back it's crown, but i have a feeling This king won't be de-throned for quite some time.

FIFA 08 Soccer Review

(More customer reviews)I've personally purchased every FIFA game since 2001 and played the game since it first appeared on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. That's over a decade of yearly iterations plus the "World Cup" and "UEFA" editions. I know what I'm talking about.

FIFA 08 on the PS3 is the best FIFA game ever to be released on a Sony system. The graphics and music are top-notch, but that's standard for the game's last few years.

Where the game breaks new ground is in the physics department. Never have professional athletes been honoured with such life-like avatars. Every kick, deak and tackle looks and more importantly feels like the real thing. The new shooting mechanics are inspired as are the ball physics. Combined these two components push the realism through the roof.

The list of impressive attributes continues: loading times are nearly non-existent, Create-a-player is more robust, the arena interface (also found in EA's NBA LIVE 08) is simple and fun and the addition of custom formations is a long awaited boon.

Finally the return of "The Lounge", the tweaking of "Manager Mode" and the addition of the "Be-A-Pro Mode"(which allows the user to control only one player during the match)ups the replay value exponentially.

FIFA 08 is stellar - really an awesome buy for anyone looking for a great sports game. My only complaint involves the lacklustre commentary, which despite being broad in scope is less than enthusiastic.

That small flaw aside, EA has a real winner here. You will not be disappointed, I guarantee it.

(More customer reviews)I like most people I know struggled through the flaws in past FIFA series.I read reviews and kept hearing the name Winning Eleven and so I decided to go for it and bought Winning Eleven 7.The game was great but Winning Eleven 8 is even better.

I own FIFA 2005 and Winning Eleven 8 is much better (except for the online gameplay).
The question is, should I buy Winning Eleven 8 or FIFA 2005?
The games are very different and one game might suit one person more than another but here are reasons to buy one or the other...

FIFA 2005
-Online Play: This feature is great.Playing the computer can become rather boring after a while but being able to play anyone anywhere in the world at you ability is amazing.I played online for a while but became sick of other players using certain tricks or flaws in the game to win like scoring off every kickoff.
-Career Mode: This mode is very deep with every officially licensed league.The benefits is you can switch leagues and teams throughout your career (unlike WE8) but the computer is so predictable and easy to play against that I didn't have the patience to complete the first season.
-Graphics: The graphics are amazing with players, jerseys, and stadiums appearing like it was television.

-Gameplay: The gameplay is amazing, it has improved from WE7 and the computer AI is much more difficult.A new 6 star difficulty is available to unlock and I don't see this game becoming too easy for anybody.The crowd's participation makes you sweat pushing for an equaliser or holding a one goal lead.Playing with two people is much better than FIFA 2005 with quicker game play and no cheap goals. You'll play for hours with a friend who is at the same skill as you.
-Graphics: Personally I think the graphics are almost as good as FIFA.The difference doesn't bother me except for the uniforms which are kind of plain on the unlicensed teams.The jerseys for unlicensed teams are the same colors but don't have logos or sponsors on them.
-Master League: It is even more advanced and has more features than WE7.Although their isn't license leagues and cups, it does replicate real soccer.Yes, Manchester United is in the game as for the top 100 or so European clubs including licensed Italian, Spanish, and Dutch leagues.Each league has a cup and there is a WEFA Championship (Champion's League) and WEFA Master's Cup (UEFA Cup).With all new Master League edit mode, you can change which teams are in what leagues and create a "Power League" which is very entertaining.All in all this feature is worth buying the game itself.

(More customer reviews)FIFA 2002 doesn't disappoint, fantastic game.I've played every version of the FIFA series since FIFA 97, and 2002 is prob the most significant overhaul of the game that I've seen.If you enjoy FIFA, you must get the newest version.Visually, all the pitches are beautifully detailed and the player models are more realistic.Also, FIFA 2002 is the most complete soccer game ever, in terms of the number of teams, leagues, and competitions you can play.The new intro sequence & game cover (see pic) feature Thierry Henry (Arsenal, France).
The biggest change has been to gameplay.Now all touches on the ball can be controlled for both direction & power (i.e. when you pass, it doesn't automatically go towards your player, you must direct it onto his path).It's tricky to get used to, but provides a great deal more control, you can even instruct players to begin an off-the-ball run, see their path, and pass the ball onto them.As a result of the changes, gameplay feels a little slower than past versions of FIFA but I believe 2002 is more realistic (2001 felt a little too fast, imo).
All around, an awesome game.Soccer die-hards will love the realism and control, for new players it may be a little challenging at first but tons of fun.

2002 FIFA World Cup Review

(More customer reviews)What a disapointment! I was extatic when i read earlie this year that EA was developping a soccer game specifically for the Xbox console, based on its fifa franchise. I should have known better.
Apparently folks at EA figured they could say whatever they wanted and not only develop the game for Gamecube and PS2 but also release these versions just before that of the XBOX.
More importantly, they also figured they could do whatever they wanted. Why bother spending a lot of time on a game that will sale no matter what, simply because it is endorsed by the FIFA and has the Japan-Korea logo all over it!
So instead of spending the time necessary to build upon the previous installments of FIFA soccer, they did the opposite, they removed many features and added a "bonus material" which consists of a video documentary about the coming World Cup (who cares? this is not a dvd movie).
Since this game focuses on the World Cup, it is no longer possible to select a club or trade players! Fair enough, but where is the training mode? Where is it said that because it's only about the World Cup, it is no longer necessary to practice free kicks or set plays! This is amazing considering EA had already this feature built into its previous FIFA versions. At the same time, EA is promoting the fact that the passing system and the air play game are more complex! The only reason not to include a much needed training mode? Being able to release another version, an "improved" one this fall!
More, for those of view who liked the strategy side of the EA franchise, like the ability to change formations and offensive and defensive style on the fly... forget about it, it's nowhere to be found on this game. Similarly, you can no longer put pressure on the ball carrier by sending your guys on him!
More, the dribling scheme is ridiculous! Overall, there are fewer moves available, and, worse, they are impossible to perform. Two of them require that you press the Y button at the same time as the Black button... sure, try it! And the ability to let the user configure the controller settings himelf? of course not, this would have required more programming!
I could go on and on, however you should get a pretty good idea by now. Yes, this game has cool graphics (which sports game on the XBOX hasn't?). Yes, World Cup offers a newly designed passing system (so did fifa 2002 on ps2). Yes, this game is the best soccer game on the XBOX (but it's basically the only one if you put aside the ESPN game which is to sports game, what curling is to winter sports!).
So my advice, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. Wait a few weeks until International pro soccer 2 and David Beckham's soccer game are released.
My rating: TWO THUMBS DOWN!

(More customer reviews)Back in 2005, Nintendo really knew what it was doing by briinging Mario and his whole gang to the wild and outrageous world of sports on the Gamecube. Undoubtingly, the experiments worked beyond expectations. Mario Superstar Baseball, delivered a fun and entertaing home run with baseball madness that was fun & had some excellent minigames. But what really exploded was Super Mario Strikers, a wild and outrageous soccer game that really brought out so many kicks into the game. It really was a delightful treat for gamers everywhere, that a sequel had to be made for a second goal, and it was worth the wait.

Mario Strikers Charged for the Nintendo Wii is the thried Wii title to endure with competing against gamers online through Nintendo's Wi-Fi connection, and the game delivers. The game follows in suit well and brings even more fun that Super Mario Strikers left over. The gameplay includes returning characters Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, as well as a couple of new playable captains like Bowser, and Diddy Kong. You can also even use your Mii's you've created as captains, as you did before from Mario Party 8. The game includes new arenas that really work beautifully with the Mario experience, ranging from the traditional, to arenas where whomps drop down on you. The control here is a bit different here in the game, as you use the nunchuck controls to move your captain and crew, and you use the Wii remote to block, pass and shoot your soccer balls to score.

There also is a new feature added to the game, a mega strike, where you could shoot as many as six goals at a single time at the goal. There are also new offensive tatics from the players. Wario could let out a foul odor to cause your opponents to hold their breath while your in control for the ball, and Mario could turn into a giant with his new moves. The graphics look wonderful and the gameplay is even more addictive than ever before, but the controls here take a bit to get used to, but once you complete the Strikers 101 training, you'll be able to get the gameplay down easily. There are also a few new charactersand trophies that are added to unlock for extra gameplay for exhibition competetions, including Petey Piranha from Super Mario Sunshine, who is making his attempts to score his kicks, but you'd have to unlock certain trophies in the tournaments.

All in all, while there are other great games coming out that have much more hype like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the Wii, Mario Strikers Charged is worth the wait for sports fans everywhere. If you've loved the Gamecube edition, than you are really going to get your kicks here. I absolutely love the hype of the game, no red cards here, just all goals!!

Back when Konami wasn't releasing a new game every year, there used to be surprising innovations in the PES franchise. FIFA hasn't changed much in terms of gameplay since FIFA98. So both FIFA and PES are far from what they should be.

If you have been playing FIFA: there is little justification for you to switch. PES 2010 doesn't offer a much more enjoyable experience.

If you have been playing PES: This is the PES that you are used to and love, it's a nice upgrade from PES2009 in almost any aspect of the game.

If you have never played a soccer game before: Take PES, it has better player movements, tactical support, good AI (except for the refs and the goalies). It may lack the realistic feel outside the penalty area that FIFA is slightly better at, but it is much more exciting in the penalty area when it comes to passing and shooting for goals. Goals in FIFA are a bit more boring than PES goals.

It takes time to change from the the old PS2 model to the newer PS3/Xbox 360 platforms. Perhaps Konami were 'caught out' a little when people changed over to the newer consoles- I don't know, but clearly the PS2 model was certainly not appropriate for today's more powerful consoles!

'PES 2008' wasn't even good enough to be categorised alongside the rest of the PS2-based incarnations of PES- I was so disappointed when I first played it on my old PS3. The sound was appalling, the graphics were abysmal- remember those horrible puke-green pitches...?? That, I would have excused if the gameplay had made up for it, but sadly, it didn't! Yeah, it was 'playable', but for me, it just was not enjoyable.

'Once bitten...' I therefore decided to try the demos for both 'PES 2009' and 'PES 2010' over the two years that followed- and still it wasn't the PES that I once knew and loved. Needless to say, I did not purchase them!

Surely 'PES 2011' would be the one... surely... it just had to be...!

Well... *drum roll* / -: ... IT IS (the one)! Finally, Konami have gotten the series back on track(!), and in my opinion have made so many improvements to the series, that they have more than made up for the disasters that were the past three games in the series.

PES Vs FIFA...

PES 2011 plays superbly, there are so many subtleties to the game, most I am sure will not be truly appreciated (if at all) by the casual player. PES is a simulation of the real game, perhaps it is a niche market- like fine wines (many adults may enjoy wine, but very few are connoisseurs). Don't get me wrong, I'm not really a drinker (I'm boring like that), I'm just trying to draw a comparison, however crude.

I'm not here to put FIFA down- if you prefer that type of football (soccer) game- good for you, play what you prefer. I'm a mature player, I 'switched' to PES 3, back in 2004- but I still bought FIFA as well (however, I preferred PES).

Essentially, FIFA and PES are aimed at two different types of player; I honestly do not feel that FIFA has anywhere near the depth of play that PES has- nor the variety of play. FIFA is great to play online- it's a high-adrenaline game- like the English Premier League. I however prefer the Spanish/South American/Italian styles of play: I want to see/experience intricate play, skillful passing- a more subtle battle that doesn't rely so much on brute strength and speed.

PES 2011- the game itself...

As for the actual game as a whole, Konami have rebuilt the game, however they have gone back to the traditional on-pitch gameplay that the true fans of the series love and appreciate. I used to use the 'Broadcasting 1' camera (the 'Broadcasting 2' camera was pretty useless in actual gameplay), and that has now been replaced!

I have read postings where people have complained about this, and I was worried about purchasing the game as a result of all the moaning. Well, I actually think the current 'broadcast' camera is far superior to the old one- I love how the camera zooms-in/out/pans- where appropriate. Believe me, it does not detract from the game one bit- it enhances it!

The graphics are excellent, and in all honesty, I prefer them to the graphics of FIFA. The sound is great this year, too- the sound of the ball being kicked is spot on. Wow, 'PES 2008' was a disaster in so many departments- I'm so glad that Konami have returned to their winning formula... finally!

I haven't played the Master League yet, but I have read that it is extremely absorbing, so I am looking forward to that! The menus are much nicer than the drab menus that EA Sports insist on using, and the computer generated opening video is absolutely incredible!

If you enjoyed PES up until 'PES 2008', you will love this game- it's incredible. The more you play, the more you discover. The passing is superb, lobbing the ball is a delight- the way it lofts into the air, and then descends- poetry in motion! As for manual cursor switching- semi is quite adequate- very enjoyable to use- so once again, I don't understand why people are moaning.

The game speed is changeable- and I have set it to '-2'- and I feel that is just right for the style of play that I employ. The great thing about the PES series (forgeting the last three versions) is that the CPU is a brilliant opponent- it isn't a juggernaut- like in in FIFA. PES is a great game to play offline, against the CPU- I have no time for online any more- too many bad sports/cheats. What's the point of getting angry when you play? That's why I stick to playing offline!

I appreciate the subtleties that Konami bring to the console football (soccer) market, no match is ever the same, and there are so many different ways of scoring (not just a few variations). Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean that it is easy to score, I just mean that there is plenty of variety in how you can score a goal.

I'm sure the game isn't perfect- nothing is, that would be impossible. However, I'm not looking for absolute perfection, just a simulation of the real game- and this, I feel, is delivered once again by Konami!

I highly recommend this game.

(More customer reviews)Fifa almost got everything right, but the one mistake that they made (not differentiating between short and long passes) is enough to take this game from nearly perfect to merely mediocre.

Besides the addition of the comprehensive and stellar manager mode, the primary difference between this game and the former version on the Wii console is the introduction of point and play controls. Such controls revolutionize video-game football. For example, no longer must you be frustrated by continually selecting the wrong (computer assigned) man on defense; merely point to any defender on the screen, and you become that person. No longer must you become irate that your pass went inexplicably to wrong place; point to a place on the screen, and you pass to that point, whipping in the perfect cross. (Crossing the ball into the box is much more realistic and user-friendly compared to the soft, floating, pointless crosses of the 08 version.) With this point and play control, Fifa 09 for the Wii takes advantage of the Wii's possibilities in all new ways.

However, it's unfathomable that Fifa didn't test the game on any potential consumers. My little nephew would immediately realize that there's no way to differentiate a ground pass from an air pass. There's only one button with which to pass the ball, the A button, and that button is the same for every kind of pass. Want to knock it over the forward's head for him to run onto the ball? Too bad, you'll pass it on the ground. Want to slot an incisive through ball between two defenders to your midfielder? Too bad, you'll pop it up in the air. Thank you Fifa: thanks to your myopia, I've had to revert to using the Gamecube controller (Use the Gamecube controller, and the controls are perfect.), stripping the Wii of all its Wii-ness.

To think, had Fifa just had my toddler nephew test the game, the company could have assigned A button as ground pass and B button as air pass; the result would have been one of the best football games ever. A shame indeed.
