Doom 64 Review

Doom 64

(More customer reviews)
i dug out my old nintendo 64 this past week, and this humble little cartridge was the first that i pulled out.i've been playing it almost non-stop since.how is it that this game is almost 8 years old?amazingly detailed and jaw-dropping environments, excellent control, totally updated enemies, and a pitch-black ambience flow freely through this game.perhaps the most striking feature is the soundtrack.i remember playing this game when it first came out in 1997.i was still pretty young, and it scared the living hell out of me.playing it now i can understand why; the soundtrack is largely comprised of long, ambient organ swells and industrial sounds.far-off cries of terror and garbled, distorted radio transmissions are mixed with the soundtrack during the second half of the game.in some levels, the effect that this has on you can be too strong and will distract you from the game ("breakdown" and "dark citadel" are probably the best examples).turning out the lights and cranking up the sound is a truly immersive experience that is rarely matched, even with modern games.although some parts of the soundtrack can tend to resemble a broken air-conditioner ("staging area" and "the terraformer" for instance), the effect is well suited to the early levels amid the dreary industrial complexes of the base.the levels in hell are designed with one thing in mind: complete terror.the replay value of this game is beefed up by a plethora of secret levels, hidden exits, easter eggs, and a cheat menu that unlocks three "fun" levels that can't be opened any other way.

another reviewer mentioned how small the levels seemed and how there were no wide open areas.this doesn't make much sense to me; some of the levels in this game are absolutely huge and span an amazingly large amount of space; "pitfalls," "spawned fear," "blood keep," "unholy temple," and "dark citadel" are practically endless.the size of many levels dwarfs those on the PC versions.the lack of wide open space, on the other hand, is very intentional.most of the action in this game involves intense, close quarters fighting.the overbearing, crushing sense of claustrophobia is designed to give the player a feeling of no escape; truly a feeling of doom.this is a goal that is rarely missed.

one thing that is instantly noticeable about this game compared to the "classic" doom is the renewed emphasis on puzzle-solving and brain-teasers rather than constant run and gun carnage.make no mistake about it, there is plenty of action in this game.but some of the puzzles in the later levels ("unholy temple" comes to mind) are maddeningly complex and extremely puzzling.all of the enemies sport new, terrifying models and are often tougher to kill than in the PC versions of yore.the pain elementals now release two noticeably more aggressive lost souls at one time and arachnatrons fire double blasts of plasma.these updated enemies cannot replace the chaingunner, spider mastermind, arch-vile, and revenant that were canceled from this game at the last minute during the development phase, however.even in the words of the developers, most of the classic elements of doom save for the single-player game had to be left out due to cart space issues.i recently read that a multi-player function for doom 64 was dropped at the last possible moment in an interview with the original developers.add a multiplayer mode, and this is a five star game.during the media blitz preceding the release of doom 3, much ado was made over the quantum leap between the carnage of the older dooms and the ambience and atmosphere of doom 3.doom 64 is the underrated, oft-neglected missing link between doom II and doom III.the new generation of doom fans never had the chance to play and experience all three of these as they came out like i did, and unfortunately the impact of those separate revolutions can't be duplicated playing these games today.as it stands, doom 64 is definately an acquired taste.if you're an open-minded doom fan, this one is worth a shot for sure.some hardcores might like it, as well.i'm a long-time fan of the PC doom series, and this one fit me just fine.give it a shot...you can pick up a copy for about $20 at most used/vintage video game specialty stores.

Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time (Collector's Edition) - Nintendo 64 Review

Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time - Nintendo 64
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
(1998)con., Nintendo 64, pub. Nintendo, dev. Nintendo EAD)

There are few things I could say about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that have not already been mentioned by critics, fans, journalists and Nintendo enthusiasts in some form or another at some point in time. The reason being is that Ocarina of Time IS (whether you love it or hate) one of the most praised, well-respected and highly regarded video games in the history of the industry. The game also remains my favorite video game of all-time.It is my intention to discuss certain aspects of the game that I find enjoyable, as well as a few of the facets of the game that I did not take pleasure in.This narrative is more of a personal reflection of the game than a critical review. Please keep that in mind while reading.Let's get stared!

The production/creation of this title was no easy task for our old friends over at Nintendo. Not only is there pressure enough in creating a title from the Legend of Zelda series, as a great portion of the gaming public hold the franchise in very high esteem and expect much for each new title, but the series had to also evolve and incur a drastic change from the familiar and successful 2-D realm to the (at the time) very new and unpredictable world of 3-D.Fortunately, Nintendo had some prior success in this transition process as their most famous and beloved mascot, Mario, had made the "jump" from the traditional and beloved 2-D platforming to the realm that is 3-D.Super Mario 64 launched with the Nintendo 64 console in the U.S. on September 25, 1996.The result? Most video games fans and critics, alike, refer to it as one of the greatest video games of all-time.

It worked for Mario, would it work for Zelda?

Mr. Miyamoto and his development team put a tremendous amount of time and effort into the completion of this game.It took some three years and a staff of over 200 folks to complete this daunting task.It had been 6 years since a Legend of Zelda console game was released (The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past SNES-1992) and the Zelda fans were starving for a new title. After all the screen-shots, after all the articles and features, after all the hype and after many delays, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was finally released in the U.S. to the masses on November 23, 1998.

Was it worth the wait? You better believe it.

Critically and publicly acclaimed, Ocarina of Time literally changed the face of the gaming world and completely altered the rules, the mechanics and the overall style and structure of video games as we know it. The 3-D realm seemed a perfect fit for the style of gameplay fans of the Legend of Zelda franchise have come to know and love.It remained as faithful to its 2-D predecessors as it possibly could and enhanced, refined and completely polished the Zelda series and, in essence, brought the franchise into the future of gaming. It remains a truly magnificent accomplishment and an absolute most welcomed edition to this extraordinary series.

It is my strong belief and conviction that the quality of gameplay has always remained the most redeeming quality of any video game.In this day and age of progressively scanned imagery and (soon to be) high-definition quality graphics, along with orchestrated music, full-blown original/compiled soundtracks (comparable to those of major Hollywood motion pictures) all presented in glorious, THX certified (some do) digital surround sound (a lot do), I have always been of the opinion that the quality gameplay mechanics, which are the foundation for the success of the industry, of games would, in a way, "take a back seat" to the aforementioned aspects that seem to be dominating ALL forms of our entertainment.

Don't get me wrong.I'm as much of a tech nut as the next guy.I just don't want the gameplay quality to suffer as a result of "dolling" up the game. The game must be enjoyable. The game must be fun. I don't care how it looks, how it sounds or what the content is - if playing the game is not entertaining, if the controls are stiff, unresponsive and hinder the experience, if the overall gameplay mechanics are not up to par, I don't care how many copies of the game sold, it will be a flop to me.I firmly believe that Nintendo understands this concept. They believe the fact that solid, innovative gameplay is the key to a truly rewarding and fun gaming experience and they trust enough in their fans and the general gaming public to recognize this.Needless to say, Ocarina of Time is one of the best examples of perfection in terms of quality gameplay mechanics on any console to-date.

Playing Ocarina of Time is a joy from start to finish. It's the perfect blend of solid 3-D action/adventure/RPG elements with a superb fighting system, spectacular environments, nearly endless amounts of exploration, quirky and fun NPCs, challenging dungeons & puzzle solving, awesome boss battles, an incredibly well structured story and wonderful in-game sound effects and catchy, hummable songs that are enjoyed by me and others to this very day. *Hugs OoT Soundtrack*

It is a grand and epic game that completely immerses you in a way that no other that I have ever played. This sense of immersion occurs, whether you are exploring the brilliantly designed and unique dungeons, riding your loyal steed, Epona, across the immense Hyrule Field or gazing upon the magnificent and majestic Hyrule Castle. You feel right in the middle of the action and excitement. You become part of the journey; you become part of the quest. You, in essence, become part of the legend.

Gameplay

The controls and the overall gameplay are as close to perfect as I have ever experienced. Two essential innovations that require specific mention are the camera system and the lock-on targeting system. What can I say? They are revolutionary. Most in-game cameras can often become a nuisance. They obstruct, rather than help. The in-game camera in Ocarina of Time never misses a beat.It never hinders the player's progress or perspective and serves as a tremendous aid during your adventure.Bottom line: I have never played a console game with a better camera system than Ocarina of Time.

In conjunction with the camera, the lock-on targeting system proves essential to your enjoyment of the game and will prove very useful while controlling Link in battle against the assortment of different enemies you will encounter during your quest. You simply tap a button on the control deck (Z-button) and this action allows you to "lock-on" to any particular enemy (or NPC) you are looking to engage (or talk to). The camera will stay on your target, retaining its over the shoulder position and allows you to circle your enemies and slash at them while side-stepping, back-flipping and shielding yourself from the attacks. It makes for a much more enjoyable and satisfying experience. The lock-on targeting does NOT make the game easier or minimize the difficulty. It simply serves as an important "weapon" for the player that allows them to strategically outline an attack plan and tactically take on multiple enemies in an efficient manner.

Both are most welcomed and most appreciated additions to the series.I must warn you though - after experiencing the Ocarina of Time camera and lock-on targeting, you will truly be spoiled for the rest of your gaming career.

In addition to the camera system and lock-on targeting, Ocarina of Time also managed to redefine the controls of the 3-D adventure with their introduction of the context sensitive (B) button. There a many actions Link will need to utilize during his quest. You will need to: pull, push, crawl, read, dive, climb, jump, talk and myriads of other actions. The context sensitive (B) button allows you to perform all of these tasks effortlessly. When you happen upon a specific task that requires a certain action, the system will automatically recognize the action needed by flashing the word of the action on screen for you.For example, if you walk up to a sign, the action button, (B), will flash "read" on-screen. You need only to hit the (B) button, and you will be able to read the sign.Simple, yet very effective and very intuitive. All games should work like this. It's brilliant.

Lastly, I would like to give some mention to the overall feel of the game.I like to call it the, "go anywhere, do anything" feeling. If you see something during your travels, chances are, you can go to it and interact with that part of the environment in some manner. This gives the player a tremendous feeling of freedom and adds a new dynamic to the overall gaming experience.Great detail was put into the creation of the magical land of Hyrule, and it shows.

Now I get to nitpick

As much as I love Ocarina of Time, there are a couple things I may have done a little differently. These are incredibly minor, minor problems that I have had with the title.First off, I was a little disappointed that the original Legend of Zelda Overworld theme was not included in the game.It was substituted for the Hyrule Field theme. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the Hyrule Field theme, but, I feel that putting the original Overworld theme in the background while traversing through Hyrule Field would have been perfect.Lastly (yup, only two) I wish there was an option to turn Navi off.At times, I found her incredibly annoying and her constant "whisens" always seem to come at the most unwanted times. But I digress, as Navi served an important role in the adventure.Because of her, we are able to "lock-on" to our targets.Navi flies over to the target and floats over their heads, allowing Link to...Read more›

Nintendo 64 Controller - Black Review

Nintendo 64 Controller - Black
Average Reviews:

The point of these reviews isn't to bash on the setup of the Nintendo 64 controller. If you're looking at this product, then you most likely already own the console. With that said, I highly recommend you ONLY buy controllers manufactured by Nintendo. Even if they are more expensive, they are definitely more trustworthy and last longer. All third-party companies tend to stray from the original format and slop them together in an easy-to-break style. Don't buy any other kind of controller... period. Oh, and... black's a nice color, too.

WWF: No Mercy Review

WWF: No Mercy
Average Reviews:

This game is a great game for the N64 videogame console. It has a lot of modes such as Ladder Matches(Single Player and Tag Team), Survival Mode where you battle against 100 opponents in an effort to go 100-0, A Steel Cage Match and the Main Mode for the Single Player. The career mode allows you to choose wrestling for 7 titles including World, European, Hardcore, Womens and more. Angles play out with-in the mode depending on whom you choose to align with or go against, attacks can be set up against you in backstage areas or interferences can help you if aligned with somebody. The Smackdown Mall is another extensive feature as it allows you to gain points upon completion of matches and Title victories and lets you access hidden wrestlers, extra costumes and more. A slight word of caution though, when having 4 wrestlers on screen the game can slow down a little bit due to the amount of activity happening at worse. It's bearable but it may turn some gamers off. Another word of caution is that the game tends to lose information unless it's saved. Therefore, any Created Wrestlers or Championship Mode games may be erased if not saved after every match or every creation. This may just be a glitch in the game or it could be an error looked over by Asmik but it's a precaution. However, not all games have this glitch so it's unknown if the games will be called back(Like Perfect Dark) and the bug will be fixed.

Product Description:
WWF No Mercy picks up exactly where Wrestlemania 2000 leftoff--it uses the same wrestling engine as its predecessor, only with morewrestlers, more match types, and other additions that will make hard-corewrestling fans devilishly happy.
For starters, there are 65-plus wrestlers, including old- and new-schoolers,tossed onto carefully copied sets like Wrestlemania and SmackDown. There arealso new backstage areas, like the sharply detailed bar, which incorporates apool table for optimal slammage.
New matches, such as the ladder match and guest-referee match, offer numerouspossibilities, like using the ladder as a springboard, or ignoring pins whentaking control of the official. Weapons also abound, and now these items can behurled around, even from the floor to the ring, where they're likely to hit aclueless opponent. A story mode adds tremendous replay value to this one, givingplayers the option of turning good or bad, with a variety of consequences thatare based on that decision.
As stated, the game plays just like Wrestlemania 2000--meaning the samedegree of slowdown and questionable artificial intelligence. The slowdownparticularly hampers the game when many wrestlers take the ring at once; itseems that this title pushes the Nintendo 64 to the limit, as far as on-screenaction goes.
But the game's good points more than outweigh its bad, and, all told, NoMercy will satisfy wrestling fans who are looking for a taste of theirfavorite male melodrama. --Robb Guido
Pros:

Overwhelming number of wrestlers, complete with special moves
Excellent novelty matches, and plenty of weapons for clobbering opponents
Cons:

Big-time slowdown when the action starts to heat up in the ring

At first, I was really skeptical about this game after playing Virtua Tennisfor Dreamcast. That game was great. The graphics and simplegameplay were really fun. However, I must say that Mario Tennis blew meaway. Not only are the 2 button controls easy for all skill levels tomaster, the gameplay is very simple. It is one of the easiest games forbeginners to get into and start having fun.The game is probably best for4 players. It makes a great party game. The replay value is really good. Some games, once you've beat it, it isn't fun to play again. However, there are so many different modes and different level computers that eventhe best player can still play and lose.Try the Intense setting ofcomputer players, and they will absolutely dominate.I would recommendthis game to anyone, even non-tennis fans, because it is very fun and easyto get into. The graphics are gorgeous, and everything you can hope forout of the Nintendo 64.Gameplay is well paced, and the framerate is veryfluid. No choppy action like in other games...cough...PerfectDark...cough...So with that said, I would say buy this game.If you haveother siblings who play with you, this game is an awesome multiplayer game.

This is a classic. The controls are easy, you can learn in five minutes although I must admid turning can be annoying because of sluggishness. Missions are not hard, but they are not easy. A good intermediate game.Large selection of weapons - m-16, 50 caliber, flamethrower, mortar, mines, etc. Fun battles between the green and tan men, to go with a good story.Good graphics and realism, but no sickening violence. It didn't take Nintendo long before they figured out that if they took all their cool characters and crammed them into a fighter with great graphics and sound that the end result would be an awesome game. The whole gang ishere, including the Mario Bros., Pikachu, Link, DK, Kirby, Fox, and Yoshi. Up to four players can pit themselves against each other in eight differentfighting arenas. The one player mode is equally entertaining, and thesecrets to be unlocked will keep you playing for hours.
GRAPHICS:SmashBros. sports a great look with bright colors, eye popping effects, anddetailed characters and backgrounds.Occasionally during the multiplayer, however, there is some slowdown.
CONTROL:The controls are extremelysimple and easy to master. But a lot of the moves strongly rely on theanalog joystick for execution, which can be frustrating in the heat ofbattle.
SOUND:Smash Bros.'s sounds will be music to your ears.Thetheme music which accompanies each stage flows nicely with the variouscharacter voices. The only cons are the annoying cries of Pikachu, whichmay appeal to Pokemon fanatics.

Product Description:
Every so often a game enters the scene propelled by so much hype and promising so many innovations that decorating it with more pretty words seems pointless. Donkey Kong 64 falls into this category.
Donkey Kong 64 is a 3-D action adventure game--à la Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie--based on the game icon of the same name (you know, the ape who rolled barrels down on Mario's head in the early '80s arcades). In this massive and graphically beautiful game, Donkey Kong and his pals must right the wrongs of King K. Rool by exploring their home island in search of more than 200 gold bananas, as well as other items that help the primates' progress.
Players alternate control of Donkey Kong and four other characters--each with unique abilities--to complete puzzles, conquer "baddies," compete in mini-games, and navigate through physical challenges. In addition to the single-player adventure, unique multiplayer games offer opportunities for social interaction between marathon solo sessions.
Donkey Kong 64's incredible graphics and smooth gameplay are boosted by an included 4-MB expansion pack. The unit helps process the memory-demanding graphics, and enhances the colored lighting effects, shadows, and other eye candy, such as ... well, there we go adding to the hype machine. Just remember: this game will be king of Nintendo's jungle for quite a while and, with a few million rabid fans, could enter the ranks of classic Nintendo 64 games. --Eric Twelker

Pokemon Stadium 2 Review

Pokemon Stadium 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found out about Pokemon characters in another Nintendo game, Super Smash Brothers. I spent many hours annoying friends with Piakchu's battle cry and shortly after rented Pokemon Stadium. I loved the game play in it and a friend and I spent many hours in front of the tv hooting and hollering at each other in the midst of battle.
The other day, Pokemon Stadium 2 hit the shelves and I debated about renting it, said what the heck and just bought it. After investing my money it, I came home, showed it to a few people in the dorm and shortly had three or four people in my room. We had back seat battlers calling out commands to the people with controllers and people wandering in to see what was going on. One of the nice things about the game is the ability for 4 controllers to be used. I was curious how they were going to do this and found out it's in the free battle arena. Each person chooses 6 Pokemon and then right before the battle begins you choose 3 each and then switch between trainers in battle, a bit like a tag team.
About half of the game is one player and the rest of it is in two -four player mode.
I'm still working my way through the gyms and, yes, they do get harder as you move along. I've been frustrated by some of the higher trainers more than once.
The "battle now" idea they have is very good. If you and a friend want to sit down and have a quick little go between the two of you this is a good way to go. It is right there on the main screen and you click on it and the system randomly picks 6 Pokemon for you to battle with, this can be done in one or two player mode.
The little mini-games are so cute. If you pay attention to your own screen, un-like I did the first time, you should do well. If you want to make sure you win there is an easy setting, if you want a challenge set the system to hard.
In event battle there are 4 cups, the Prime Cup, the Poke Cup, the Little Cup and the Challenge Cup. In the challenge cup instead of you using your Pokemon's the computer picks them for you and you can battle on the settings for the Prime, Poke and little cups.
To be honest, I have yet to get through everything. I'm currently working on finding a Gameboy Pokemon game so that I can access everything this game has to offer, (as in Pokemon Stadium you need a transfer pack, and sadly it's not included in the game)yet with out it I've had many hours of battle already. Those new Pokemon are toooo cute. My faves? Of the new guys, I've found good battle buddies in Jumpluff, Skarmory, and Girafarig. My tried and true battle companions from Pokemon Stadium are Rapidash, Pikachu and Snorlax. Now... who'll help you win all those battles?

This game is soooo cool. You have three days and nights, to find Majora's Mask and save Termina from being destroyed by the falling moon. In this game, all of the minor characters in Orcarina are better explored and newcharacter's are also introduced. As well as Majora's mask, you have to find24 other masks.Another cool thing about this game is that Young Link canuse some of the weapons that were previosly only available to Adult Link. But the neatest thing of all about Majora's mask is the ability to turn into different things depending on which mask you are wearing. The Deku maskallows you turn turn in to a Deku , the Zora mask in to a Zora and theGoron in to a Goron etc..One of the questions you might have about thisgame is whether Link can grow up as in Orcarina. Well, I don't want tospoil it for you but I'll tell you this....The final battle is worthplaying the game for.

The camera angles are good and the multi-player battle mode is awesome. Each of the characters has their own special ability that means they can goplaces the others can't.This makes it so you must bring each characterinto the worlds of the others to find all the tribals and secrets.Thereare even special missions for the flying drone Floyd and two little carracing games.Rare did them selves proud. This game is a Triumph!

Toy Story 2 Review

Toy Story 2

This is an amazing game. There's even a movie clip at the beginning. The graphics and sound are superb, and no detail is left overlooked. If Buzz steps in something, he leaves a trail of footprints! The House is sorealistic - very 3D and views change as you move the character, as ifyou're the character and you see what he sees.It feels like you'reactually walking through the house. There are a number of challenges tomeet; coins need to be collected for Hamm, sheep need to be rescued for BoPeep, Mr. Potato Head needs his missing ear, Buzz races the RC car; alltwists on the movie. When Buzz performs these fun and challenging heroics, the player is rewarded with Pizza Planet tokens. Very well done, absorbingto both children and adults...we're not past level one yet and if we nevergot to any of the other 14 levels, this game's already "done it"for my family!

Banjo-Kazooie Review

Banjo-Kazooie
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got Banjo Kazooie a couple of years ago for Christmas and it's still one of my favorite games. It's a lot like Mario 64 except better in many ways. The levels are a lot bigger and more challenging. There are more moves tolearn, more enemies, and bigger bosses than any other 3D platformer exceptfor Donkey Kong 64.It's fun finding and collecting the puzzle pieces soyou can get to the next level and closer to the chance of putting Gruntildaback on her broom and on her way.As you go on, the levels get more andmore difficult. The level with all 4 seasons in it and Gruntilda's boardgame are especially difficult. You also have to collect 5 of your friendsin each level for a puzzle piece. Not to mention collecting 100 musicalnotes for another one. There is a lot to find in each world, but the gameis fun enough and keeps you interested enough to do that without gettingfrustrated. The snow level was completely awesome and had some of the beatgraphics I have ever seen.
At the end of the game, Gruntilda is apretty hard boss to beat. There's a secret you can get right before youjump in the pot that sends you to fight her that will double your energy IFyou have collected enough music notes throughout the game. Banjo Kazooierevolutionized 3D action/adventure games a step further than Mario 64 didand did it with authority. If you like 3D action/adventure games, you gotto get this game.

The New Tetris Review

The New Tetris
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The New Tetris certainly lives up to its name, providing a new play strategy where the key to a high score lies in forming 4x4 blocks out of the normal Tetris pieces, while still completing lines as you did in theoriginal.(See the screenshots for an illustration of one of these 4x4blocks forming.)To make this task more managable, there is also a 'hold'piece that can be swapped in place of your current piece at will. The gameis balanced so that you can play it old-school style just fine (even inmultiplayer), but you will acquire lines and advance levels much fasterattempting to build the new 4x4 blocks.
Mutiplayer is a blast, with up to4 players and several game options. The music is absolutely awesome.Theonly serious flaw with the game is the lack of a challenging computeropponent.
For casual gamers looking for a fun game to play alone or withfriends, this is an excellent choice. For Tetris fans, this is amust-have!
