(More customer reviews)First... any fan of the original two games including spin-offs of either (like FF tactics) will be very happy with this game.Stop reading and order it now.I'll try to explain why in a way that someone who's never played the series can understand.
This game combines elements from many different genres with classic D&D style theme.The story is very detailed and on the level with FF tactics, much more detailed than the original OB.Of course, the most important thing to consider is gameplay.So here goes.
You are in command of a growing regiment of troops that can include everything from knights, archers and wizards to dragons, other "monsters" and even the undead.You command your troops from an "overhead" position guiding units of up to 5 troops around the battle areas to take strategic positions, liberate towns and conquer your enemy.
Battle takes place when your unit meets with an enemy.This may come as a shock, but you don't directly control any of your troops in battle, they attack the enemy according to the way you previously set up the unit.For example, as battle starts initiative is automatically deterimined by row: your first row which might contain two knights launches an attack.As the first knight is swinging his sword the next knight is already moving towards his target and the rest of the battle follows suit.Thus, the battles are much more fluid when compared to the original game and most importantly the vile balance destroying tarot cards were removed and replaced with something which can be used much less.. in fact, I havn't had a chance to use it yet.Don't be worried about the lack of direct control if you havn't played the original OB, you'll find that setting up your units to fight effectively is just as rewarding, if not more so than the tedious task of choosing individual targets yourself.The possibilities are much more detailed in battle now.The grid you set your units up on is 3x3 which adds a middle row to the original front and back.As old fans know, different classes fight differently depending on which row they are in.Sometimes the number of attacks they perform is different, sometimes the attack itself will change.Obviously, the front row provides better offense and the back defense; the front row *generally*, allows for more short range and nonmagic attacks while the back row usually allows more ranged attacks to be performed.
In a game like this it's the little details that make or break the game and OB64 is just full of great little details in all things.One thing old fans will love is the suspend features.Some of the later battles can get quite long... the suspend feature lets you pause the game in the middle of battle basically and turn the system off to pick up where you left of later.Unlike a save function, you are forced to quit when you use it and the data is eliminated when you start up again so that you can't cheat.Another little thing, if you have 2 or 3 wizards in the same row in battle, they may combine their magic to create entirely new spells.In the battle and story scenes the beautiful rendered backgrounds come alive with grass blowing in the wind, little things moving in the back ground and excellent use of light and shadows on the characters.The animation is extremely excellent with small hand gestures and such being animated very explicitly.This game really has a lot of character and no flaws that come to mind.To a new comer especially, there is a little bit of a learning curve before you can truly master the game, but what game of this type doesn't require a little.. "work".. from you.
A final word about the music.Some of the music is used from the classic games but it's been given a "64" polish and sounds great still.We know the N64 isn't a CD player and I think Quest did a great job with the N64's limited sound capability.In fact the quality sounds great, the only thing I can't vouch for yet is the quality of the compositions themselves since I havn't been all that for into the game yet.
Bottom line... buy this !now! unless you have adverse reactions to RPG's/strategies.You won't be dissappointed.

(More customer reviews)i dug out my old nintendo 64 this past week, and this humble little cartridge was the first that i pulled out.i've been playing it almost non-stop since.how is it that this game is almost 8 years old?amazingly detailed and jaw-dropping environments, excellent control, totally updated enemies, and a pitch-black ambience flow freely through this game.perhaps the most striking feature is the soundtrack.i remember playing this game when it first came out in 1997.i was still pretty young, and it scared the living hell out of me.playing it now i can understand why; the soundtrack is largely comprised of long, ambient organ swells and industrial sounds.far-off cries of terror and garbled, distorted radio transmissions are mixed with the soundtrack during the second half of the game.in some levels, the effect that this has on you can be too strong and will distract you from the game ("breakdown" and "dark citadel" are probably the best examples).turning out the lights and cranking up the sound is a truly immersive experience that is rarely matched, even with modern games.although some parts of the soundtrack can tend to resemble a broken air-conditioner ("staging area" and "the terraformer" for instance), the effect is well suited to the early levels amid the dreary industrial complexes of the base.the levels in hell are designed with one thing in mind: complete terror.the replay value of this game is beefed up by a plethora of secret levels, hidden exits, easter eggs, and a cheat menu that unlocks three "fun" levels that can't be opened any other way.

another reviewer mentioned how small the levels seemed and how there were no wide open areas.this doesn't make much sense to me; some of the levels in this game are absolutely huge and span an amazingly large amount of space; "pitfalls," "spawned fear," "blood keep," "unholy temple," and "dark citadel" are practically endless.the size of many levels dwarfs those on the PC versions.the lack of wide open space, on the other hand, is very intentional.most of the action in this game involves intense, close quarters fighting.the overbearing, crushing sense of claustrophobia is designed to give the player a feeling of no escape; truly a feeling of doom.this is a goal that is rarely missed.

one thing that is instantly noticeable about this game compared to the "classic" doom is the renewed emphasis on puzzle-solving and brain-teasers rather than constant run and gun carnage.make no mistake about it, there is plenty of action in this game.but some of the puzzles in the later levels ("unholy temple" comes to mind) are maddeningly complex and extremely puzzling.all of the enemies sport new, terrifying models and are often tougher to kill than in the PC versions of yore.the pain elementals now release two noticeably more aggressive lost souls at one time and arachnatrons fire double blasts of plasma.these updated enemies cannot replace the chaingunner, spider mastermind, arch-vile, and revenant that were canceled from this game at the last minute during the development phase, however.even in the words of the developers, most of the classic elements of doom save for the single-player game had to be left out due to cart space issues.i recently read that a multi-player function for doom 64 was dropped at the last possible moment in an interview with the original developers.add a multiplayer mode, and this is a five star game.during the media blitz preceding the release of doom 3, much ado was made over the quantum leap between the carnage of the older dooms and the ambience and atmosphere of doom 3.doom 64 is the underrated, oft-neglected missing link between doom II and doom III.the new generation of doom fans never had the chance to play and experience all three of these as they came out like i did, and unfortunately the impact of those separate revolutions can't be duplicated playing these games today.as it stands, doom 64 is definately an acquired taste.if you're an open-minded doom fan, this one is worth a shot for sure.some hardcores might like it, as well.i'm a long-time fan of the PC doom series, and this one fit me just fine.give it a shot...you can pick up a copy for about $20 at most used/vintage video game specialty stores.

Killer Instinct Gold Review

(More customer reviews)OK, as you may have heard, this game is for advanced gamers. But, I must say...my dad paid $... for this game, and it is well worth it.
This game is DEEP! Fans of the original Killer Instinct or Killer Instinct 2, or even of a fighting game that ACTUALLY has strategy to it, this is THE game to have. I must say it is at least 10 times as good as Mortal Kombat (such a simple fighting game). This excludes street fighter of course, but this game is much deeper than street fighter ever was (or probably ever will be).
KI Gold is not weak at all. This can dish out an awesome 90 frames per second. Other 64 titles look at 30, 40, maybe 60 fps, while KIG dishes out 90. OK, the characters are 2 dimensional. So what? The immerse interactive realistic 3D environments back this up. Interactive? Yup. You can combo your opponent into exploding barrels, helicopter blades, stone statues, trash cans, and much more! And of course, knock offs are back. It's possible to finish your character off the side of a building, a bridge, or even smack em straight into an oncoming train! The no mercies are back as well. Each character has 2 no mercies, a mini ultra, and the original ultra combo. You want more? OK. By fighting your way through difficulty levels of the arcade mode, you unlock special options that you can turn on to maximize gameplay fun. Make fireballs faster, pull of no mercies at even the start of their second life bar, cheap juggling, and for all those cowards: no blocking. These are only a few of the many unlockable options. Still want more? Well OK. When i say this game is deep, i mean it. Quite frankly, this game literally has over ONE MILLION different combos!! That aught to be enough to occupy you. Strategic manual and autoduobles enable you to create massive combos. Parry moves alow extended combos, and the Ultra Combo Breaker could save you from defeat at the last second (not to mention bragging rights). Super moves that drain your super bar are also available. Pretty much anything that happens builds your super bar. Super moves include super finishers that add an awesome 4-6 hit finish to a combo and high damage, super linkers to create huge combos, and shadow moves that give you a shadow when used in a combo. Must you have more? Here you go. New team modes of gameplay allow 1 on 1 fighting with teams of up to 9 characters. There's the classic tournament mode, and a training mode that teaches you everything you need to know to master a character. By beating training mode on different diffuculty levels, you unlock colors for all your fighters, which include the awsome white, the even more awesome gold, and the completely awesome shadow color! What else could there be to this game? Why, saving scores, of course! Unlike the original Killer Instinct for SNES (best fighting game for it as well), all of your top 5 biggest combos with individual characters and the damage for each combo is saved into the game. The fastest times you defeat people in is also saved.What more could you ask from a fighting game? How about difficulty? KIG has 5 modes of difficulty. By beating it on the hardest setting, you unlock the master difficulty level. If you happen to beat this level, your efforts will not go unrewarded, and by rights of battle, you will recieve...well, that's a surprise.
The only problem with this game is non-mono sound. While the difference between stereo and mono is hardly noticeable, it is nice to hear the great tracks in their fullest sound. Of course, even monaurally, the songs are awesome.
Let's recap. 10 characters + 1 hidden boss character, 90 fps, amazing interactive 3D environments, knocking off of the stage, no mercies and huge ultra combos, many special unlockable options, ONE MILLION PLUS combos, special maneuvers to maximize combos, super moves, combo/ultra breakers, new team and training modes, practice mode, new cool colors, saving all of your awesome achievements, and very easy to master difficulty levels to work your way up to a true KI Gold master.
This game combines the greatest elements to make the greatest fighting game: speed, action, novice to pro, simple to strategic, a few minutes of fun to a gameday of superb fighting, variety, great environments....this game has it all.
A fighting fan without this game is not a fighting fan at all.

(More customer reviews)Although many places on the net and in magazines have reviewed this title and given it medocre scores, they are missing the point of Rage Wars.They mention that its plot is not that good.Well, the game was not releasedfor plot, it was released to be an awesome multiplayer experience, which itis.There are many modes in this game that will satisfy the novice andveteran players.The single player modes are: 1 player trials, Frag Fest,and Time Trial.They are all based upon a player meeting certain goals inorder to advance.These are fun for a long time.For two players,there is the 2 player trials mode.This is much like 1 player, but you andyour friend play cooperatively to fight the computer and advance.Theone to four player multiplayer mode is where this game excells.Itfeatures four modes: Bloodlust, Team Bloodlust, Frag Tag, and Capture theFlag.These in my opinion match the fun of goldeneye.The levels are verygood and the fun that comes from this will leave friends playing for hourson end.With the tremendous graphics and Bot AI that can make oneplayer feeling like he is playing quality opponents, this game isdefinately a keeper.I give it 5 stars for this reason.Acclaim hasproduced a truly amazing title.

Conker's Bad Fur Day Review

(More customer reviews)After all the hype surrounding this game, I was expecting nothing more than vulgar British jokes with so-so gameplay.To my surprise, this is one of the best looking, best sounding, best playing, and funny games on the N64.Although it has a mature rating, I found the material to be nothing more than PG-13 stuff.However, for those of us above the 15-17 year age group, Rare has included some subtle, hilarious jokes that I'm sure younger kids would miss.This game looks very very good.Although the frame rate takes a hit in open areas, the true stars are the characters.Their animations, voices, and originality are what makes this game for me.The sound is probably the best I have ever heard from an N64 game.The tunes are reminscent of the old Warner Bros. cartoons, and the sound effects are in surround sound!From a gameplay point of view, you won't find anything new from the 3-d platform genre, but the context-sensitive pads do add a bit of a twist.In addition to the character animations, I must say that the references to movies are outstanding!I don't want to spoil any of it, but I'm sure you'll find one of your favorite movies spoofed in here.I have never gotten bored with this game, and I think this is the last good N64 game that everyone should play.

And if killing everything in your path isn't good enough, there are also a lot of RPG elemnts in there. There are problems to solve,special items to collect, and you can buy stuff to upgrade your character.This game is a must!If you liked Zelda, but want a four player game, thenlook into this game...graphics arent EXCELLENT, but what graphics are? Thepoint I'm trying to get across is, buy this game!A game for thinkers,and a game for those people that just like blowing up things...or both, youcan play four player...Also, excellent replay value...after a month or soit starts to get repetitive, but i still cant pry myself away from thescreen! With that said, I highly recommend you ONLY buy controllers manufactured by Nintendo. Even if they are more expensive, they are definitely more trustworthy and last longer. All third-party companies tend to stray from the original format and slop them together in an easy-to-break style. Don't buy any other kind of controller... period. Oh, and... black's a nice color, too.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Review

(More customer reviews)Before the Nintendo 64 ever came out, "Turok: Dinosaur Hunter" was one of the games that I couldn't wait to play after seeing the previews of it in various magazines.When I finally got to play it, I was impressed with everything in the game, except for one problem.The game is one of the hardest corridor shooters I've ever played, and still is to this date.The graphics with the mystical backgrounds and cool-looking dinosaurs, couldn't have been much better.The control is just like it needs to be and the sound and music also go great with the game.The only bad thing about "Turok: Dinosaur Hunter" is that most of the levels are almost impossible to pass, and there could've been a multiplayer game to give the game some better replay value.
While you play Turok, you can use several weapons, and you'll have to make your way across some levels by doing such feats as going swimming and climbing tall vines to get to where you need to be."Turok: Dinosaur Hunter" is a great corridor shooter in just about every way and I recommend everybody to give it a shot.Just be prepared for a great challenge.

Banjo-Tooie Review

(More customer reviews)It's gonna be a great Christmas this year! Banjo-Tooie is without doubt one of the greatest games I've ever played! It's one of those all-too-rare (no pun intended) games that constantly puts a smile on your face and a glow in your heart, and reminds you just how fun games can be. The graphics are phenomenal - each landscape is so epic and beautiful to look at that you could live there! The size of the levels is surely on the very limit of the machine's capability and the levels themselves are supremely designed. The gameplay is a perfectly balanced blend of action and puzzles which are interspersed by some great little fun and wacky mini-games (including some hilarious 1st-person shooting sections like Goldeneye) and awesome bosses (just wait until you see the giant, snake-like welding torch Weldar - surely a candidate for most brilliantly original boss of all time). There is also a varied set of multiplayer games for up to 4 players which stand up as good games in their own right. It's easy to pigeon-hole Banjo-Tooie as another 3D platform game but it is so much more than that. It is more like a fully-fledged adventure game as there are so many genuinely funny and charming characters to talk to and interact with. Add to that some really innovative gameplay touches and the ability to control Banjo and Kazooie independently of each other at certain points in the quest and you have perfect entertainment for the holiday season (and of course for the rest of the year too!). The structure and humour means it's a game for kids and adults alike - just how all the best games should be. Forget PS2 and its disappointing collection of money-grabbing remakes. Banjo-Tooie is a game obviously made by people with a passion for games and therefore it's a game the player will be passionate about while playing - which is a feeling only the greatest games can create. Surely this is Rare's, if not Nintendo's, finest hour.

Mario Party 3 Review

(More customer reviews)Well, let me start by saying that you won't fully appreciate this game unless you've played the first two. The original Mario Party was insanely difficult and didn't offer you a whole lot of choices other than roll and hope you don't get screwed, since it seemed like Bowser was everywhere. In Mario Party 2, items were introduced and alternate game modes. You only got to carry one item and they were insanely expensive. Then came Mario Party 3. Well, let me say, I've never seen a game evolve so much from one sequel to the next.
You will enjoy this game if you've ever played a real-life board game with friends or family. Most living, breathing beings who enjoy a little friendly competition with an interactive backdrop will enjoy this game. Even if you lose, which you will from time to time, it's still a lot of fun. I've only explored the battle royal mode, which is just a fancy name for the regular multiplayer mode, and haven't had a chance to explore the other modes. This mode alone makes the game worthwhile. Even if you don't have anyone to play against, its still fun as a one-player game. How so? Well, for starters, it takes four players to play battle royal mode. If you're short, you can substitute a computer player, so essentially, this is a 1-4 player game. Two new characters have been added, Daisy and Waluigi (both from Mario Golf), for a total of eight characters to choose from.
The single defining quality of this game is that now you can save your game file.... The creators had foresight enough to leave three spaces for saving games under a file name. If you're in the middle of a game, you can go to the options menu and choose "Don't Save", "Save After This Turn", or "Save After Every Turn". That alone is beautiful, no longer do you have to sit and finish a 50-turn game, which could take over two hours to finish. In addition, you can set the speed of the messages and actual gameplay. That helps if you're in a hurry and want to get a quick game in.
Now here is probably one of the most useful features of the game, that isn't explicitly stated in the instruction manual. Say four of you are playing and somebody has to leave. Simply pause the game, and there is a menu option that lets you switch players back and forth between human and computer. Say that person is only gone for a few turns, then pause and switch them back to human when they return....
Also, we've gone from no items, to one item, to being able to carry up to three items at the same time. In addition, the prices have dropped sharply, unlike the real world. That's because there were only a handful of items in MP2. Now there are about double if not more and a lot more opportunities to acquire them. The items are what really make the game unpredictable. That coupled with Chance Time and Hidden Blocks makes it truly anybody's game. Don't worry if one player is dominant at most of the minigames. There is still the possibility of outsmarting them for the win. Some of the new items are truly evil in nature and others very practical and well-thought out. For example, the Boo Repellent is essential for keeping the kleptomaniac apparition at bay. The Cellular Shopper lets you buy an item at any place on the board, on your turn. In addition, there's item that lets you call Bowser and sick 'em on somebody of your choosing, a lamp that moves the star at random, a mushroom that makes someone you choose move backward for one turn, etc. The list goes on and on. The unpredictability of MP3 as opposed to MP2 makes the game incredibly more fun.
Simply put, if you like board games then you'll love this. It is truly a party. Worth every bit of the ... I paid. Nintendo certainly knows how to improve upon its predecessor titles. Go get it!

While Ocarina of Time is very traditional in its format and style, Majora's Mask strays far from the ordinary.Ocarina of Time masters the epicness that Zelda can be.Majora's Mask masters the dark and mysterious side of the Zelda series.

Being a fan of the unusual, I am addicted to the idea of restarting the same three days repeatedly.Trying to get as much done before restarting is awesome.Then getting to transform into a Deku, Zora, and Goron puts this game over the top.You also get to fight the bosses (although there are only four big bosses) as many times as you like.Every time you restart the three days, you get to fight them again by warping straight to their lair.Fighting Goht is one of those experiences that's worth reliving again and again!

Lots of masks to find, swimming as a Zora and rolling as a Goron, a much more difficult final boss than Ganon in Ocarina of Time, and a much darker tone help make this game the gem that it is.I will always be in awe of this game, and I hope everyone else finds it as enjoyable as I do.

Unlike the first Mario party you aren't penalized any coins for losing mini games, which makes it lessdissapointing for the kids. The new boards are original and fun to play(with the exception of mystery land which is like running around incircles). Buying the special items adds an entirely new dimension to thegame and allows players to really use strategy to win. I also appreciatethat no mini games require spinning the joystick. No more unsightly handindentations
By far the best Nintendo game to date.

It has a lot of modes such as Ladder Matches(Single Player and Tag Team), Survival Mode where you battle against 100 opponents in an effort to go 100-0, A Steel Cage Match and the Main Mode for the Single Player. The career mode allows you to choose wrestling for 7 titles including World, European, Hardcore, Womens and more. Angles play out with-in the mode depending on whom you choose to align with or go against, attacks can be set up against you in backstage areas or interferences can help you if aligned with somebody. The Smackdown Mall is another extensive feature as it allows you to gain points upon completion of matches and Title victories and lets you access hidden wrestlers, extra costumes and more. A slight word of caution though, when having 4 wrestlers on screen the game can slow down a little bit due to the amount of activity happening at worse. It's bearable but it may turn some gamers off. Another word of caution is that the game tends to lose information unless it's saved. Therefore, any Created Wrestlers or Championship Mode games may be erased if not saved after every match or every creation. This may just be a glitch in the game or it could be an error looked over by Asmik but it's a precaution. However, not all games have this glitch so it's unknown if the games will be called back(Like Perfect Dark) and the bug will be fixed.

Weapons also abound, and now these items can behurled around, even from the floor to the ring, where they're likely to hit aclueless opponent. A story mode adds tremendous replay value to this one, givingplayers the option of turning good or bad, with a variety of consequences thatare based on that decision.
As stated, the game plays just like Wrestlemania 2000--meaning the samedegree of slowdown and questionable artificial intelligence. The slowdownparticularly hampers the game when many wrestlers take the ring at once; itseems that this title pushes the Nintendo 64 to the limit, as far as on-screenaction goes.
But the game's good points more than outweigh its bad, and, all told, NoMercy will satisfy wrestling fans who are looking for a taste of theirfavorite male melodrama. --Robb Guido

Some games, once you've beat it, it isn't fun to play again.However,there are so many different modes and different level computers that eventhe best player can still play and lose.Try the Intense setting ofcomputer players, and they will absolutely dominate.I would recommendthis game to anyone, even non-tennis fans, because it is very fun and easyto get into.The graphics are gorgeous, and everything you can hope forout of the Nintendo 64.Gameplay is well paced, and the framerate is veryfluid.No choppy action like in other games...cough...PerfectDark...cough...So with that said, I would say buy this game.If you haveother siblings who play with you, this game is an awesome multiplayer game.
