Jade Empire Special Edition (Rhino Demon Exclusive Content) Review

Jade Empire Special Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jade Empire: Special Edition is a lot of fun.The milieu is a fresh breath of air from the typical fantasy setting and the combat is certainly more dynamic.Instead of issuing commands and then waiting for the computer to resolve dice rolls behind the scenes, the combat is pure real-time martial arts. You jump your character in and out, dodge, roll, and have to actually connect when you strike. It brings out an urgency and involvement that is sometimes lacking in RPG combat.

The graphics may not be at the level of Oblivion, but they're crisp and pretty.Plus the game runs on a system that's not quite state-of-the art without issue.Apart from a few bugs (sometimes the camera angle gets stuck, easily fixed by a quick reload), Jade Empire runs smoothly.

The game has limited replay value, though. This is simply not as in-depth or large a game universe as Knights of the Old Republic or the Baldur's Gate series. You have a small starting town, which there is no point revisiting once you finish the introductory chapter. After that, there's a somewhat larger town (Tien's Landing) and then the Imperial City.Again, once you leave the town, you probably won't have any reason to ever go back. And the Imperial City is the same story:once you've wrapped up everything and head to the Imperial Palace, you won't be going back to the City.

That's a shame because the game feels so linear as a result. There's side quests in each urban location, but nothing that really makes you feel like you're forging your own destiny in another world. You won't be doing anything equivalent to rescuing Anise's castle in BG2 or acting as a hit man for the Genoharadan in KOTOR.

So my final verdict is that this is definitely a good game. But will I dust it off the shelf every few months, eager to give it another go (like I do with BG2, Kotor, and even Fallout 2)?That I can't be so sure about.

UFC: Sudden Impact Review

UFC: Sudden Impact
Average Reviews:

At best, UFC throwdown (the 1st PS2 UFC game) was a 2 Star because it was a duplicate (perhaps worse replication) of the original UFC for Dreamcast. This version however is a vast improvement in my opinion. It still isnt as good as it could potentially be. Being a huge MMA fan I'm glad they are still making these games though it's a lot funner than any other kind of fighting simulation out there and a whole lot more realistic.
The New features that are an improvement over UFC throwdown:
Actual damage will appear on the fighters where they are being attacked (cuts and bruising on the face and body)
New positions in the game are side mount, Standing grapple up against the cage, and a new brutal looking position, it is a mount with the opponent crunched into the cage sitting up akwardly. There are also some updated fighting techniques for all of the fighters that they more commonly use in the ring presently.
There is better music when fighters are comming to the ring although their enterance body movements are very robotic and in their basic standing mobility i believe the game series took a backwards step.
There are new fighting modes such as Story mode where you create a fighter and go through a career of fighting.
Another fighting mode is called CHAMPION ROAD, THIS mode was definitly an improvement on the series I won the championship belt with Matt Hughs in his weight division and then i was able to take on challengers for my belt in another series of matches called LEGEND MODE. This is definitly fun, I will have a lot of fun winning the belt with all of my favorite UFC fighters. On a side note you actually get to carry your belt into the ring with you on your enterance when you are a defending champion, I liked that.
Ken Shamrock is in the game and so is Dan Severn, have your favorite old school warriors go at it one more time!
The game is definitly worth the $20.00. You can't beat the value you get from this game and the replay ability it has to offer for that price. If you were thinking about getting this game JUST GET IT!!! You cant be dissapointed with the price it's at.

Double Dragon Advance Review

I remember when I was a kid getting to waste all my Mom's change on the original Double Dragon arcade game. When the game hit home systems, it was a massive hit and helped inspire countless other 2-D side scrolling beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage and Final Fight.Double Dragon Advance mixes the addicting gameplay of the original with many upgrades and elements from the various sequels released after the original.Plaing as twin brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee, you go up against the Shadow Warriors in hopes of locating Billy's kidnapped girlfriend. You get to punch, kick, and use many a weapon, in your mission as you go against a host of baddies from petty thugs to well manicured suits (who look like the Agents from The Matrix) to the infamous buff, bald headed, and bearded Abobo to even Machine Gun Willy. The controls are tight, the graphics bring back plenty of nostalgic memories, and the music is ever catchy. The only drawback of Double Dragon Advance is the game is ultimately too short, and by the time you beat it you'll be wishing for more. All in all, fans of the original game who own a GBA will find plenty of great memories with this game, and those new to the genre should give this a look.

Rise To Honor Review

Rise To Honor
Average Reviews:

Any enjoyment you might derive from this game is from playing as Jet Li in an old-school fight setting. When the novelty of that wears off, what you have left is an incredibly repetitive game with a godawful camera and an ill-advised control scheme.

Yes, bonus marks are in order for using Cantonese in Hong Kong with subtitles.(As a native Hong Kong person I can say the dialogue is less stilted than usual, though still flawed)Though I might add that international espionage games like Syphon Filter has been doing that for years. The settings are authentic enough, with the battles in the Hong Kong settings being especially evocative of kung fu films.

But is it worth the very problematic gameplay?Just barely. If you've seen/played the demo already, you'll know that the entire fight system consists of slapping the right analog stick. While the array of moves you can unleash is impressive, motion-captured well from Li's own silhouette, this system is very ill conceived from a fighting-game perspective.Worse still, the camera is so restless that you could be in the middle of a combo against an enemy, and then the perspective shifts so that you're suddenly hitting at air and the enemy's to the side.So many game designers have misled notions about being filmmakers, not realizing that the best perspective for gaming is a fixed perspective. This problem came to a head during the ludicrous "escape from capture" stage where the camera actually cuts you off, preventing you from seeing what's behind you, even though there are guards sweeping flashlights that way that you're supposed to avoid! This is simply a moronic use of the camera.

Aside from this, the fighting gets tired awfully quickly, especially since the designers committed the ol' "this level never ends" sin. This game alleviates this problem by having lots of checkpoints where you can continue the game, but during some of the "one against 14" stages, the endless brawling still gets tired. And whose idea was it to have enemies pull off 18-hit combos, where if you get hit the first time, you get to watch your character get pummelled for 10 seconds straight?

I actually find the gunfight segments of this game more fun than the endless, endless hand-to-hand stages. This is where the dual analog sticks truly shine, allowing you to smoothly run from spot to spot forwards and backwards while your hands can aim independently and a top button allows you to do Time Crisis-style ducking. There's even a crazy level where you fight off about 100 enemies with two nailguns!

This game would probably remain tempting to Jet Li fans because of the role-playing aspect of it.And I wouldn't blame them -- this was my reason for buying this game, and there are a few levels that I truly enjoyed. The overall game, however, is really not that great, and I would recommend only playing it in small doses. It will get tired mightily quickly if you sit with it for more than an hour.

Tekken 6 Review

Tekken 6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being an avid Tekken fan, there isn't much that gets me more excited than another sequel in my favorite fighting franchise. I had been looking forward to this one for the past year or so when news was hitting about it's upcoming release and as usual, I put down my pre-order dollars and picked it up first day. After some time playing with it though, somethings bothering me.

For perspective, I fell in love with Tekken with the first in the arcade and it's by far, my favorite fighting franchise. I've played every Tekken to date, and played them to death. Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection is my favorite and I believe the absolute best the series has to offer. So what's wrong with Tekken 6? I'm still not quite sure and that's what's bothering me.

Graphically, it looks very good, in fact the best it's ever looked, but somehow different. The characters have that next gen look about them but may be a little too shiny and bumpy for their own good. I have to admit though, the animations look incredible and very natural and lifelike. The stages are pretty good but nothing spectacular but feature some new break away floors and walls which is pretty cool. The pig sty stage is a real puzzler and is easily my least favorite of the bunch. The soundtrack is also pretty good but I still like Tekken 5 DR's much better. On all fronts though I have a real problem with the the end boss, stage and music. It all just seems so out of place that I have to remind myself I'm playing Tekken. They've tried these type of bosses before and for me, they just don't work. They're much more at home in Soul Calibur than Tekken. After the awesome Jinpachi in Tekken 5, this is a big let down.

Almost every character from the series has returned with a handful of new ones that all play pretty well and aren't totally out of place. I really don't like Lars and Leo though, they look very generic and are the least fun for me to use. I found Zafina to be the most fun of the bunch and the most natural addition with Bob being a close second. All my favorites still play well with some new moves that were fun to discover. The difficulty seems a little ramped up here and I found myself struggling more on medium level than I had in recent memory.

There are a ton of modes including a campaign mode that's like a 3D beat em up, but I personally don't care for it much. It's not fun and doesn't play well, look good and I don't appreciate that I have to go through it to get the characters endings instead of Story Mode which is oddly missing. This is also reminicent of Tekken 3 when they had a similar mode. There's also the standard vs, online, time attack and practice modes.

Like Tekken 5, there's rank promotions and gold to be earned through the campaign and arcade modes that'll enable you to customize your character to your liking. I like this feature in fighting games and I feel it really extends their life.

The oddest thing here is that I should be thrilled to be playing a new Tekken but I'm not. It looks and plays the same but somehow different. I can't quite put my finger on it. The best I can liken it to is when your favorite band comes out with a new album that's just not what you were expecting and your not sure how to feel about it. Tekken 6 is kinda the same and kinda different at the same time but not necessarily in the best way. I'm reminded of Tekken 4, many were put off by it but I didn't have a problem with it and enjoyed it just fine, but like Tekken 6, it was the first on a next generation console. Coincidence? I'm sure the same will be true here as it was with Tekken 4, some will love it while others may feel more like me. Either way, it's still a good game though and I'm gonna play it for a long time and hope it grows on me a little more. I still do recommend it to long time Tekken fans and maybe a rent for newcomers. I invite you to leave any comments on how you feel about it and why.

11/01/09 Update: After considerable playtime with Tekken 6 I believe the problem is a number of small changes that add up to a big difference for longtime vets. Graphically, I think T6 should look alot better but many of the stages are either very dark or the colors have been cranked up so much that much of the detail is lost. Sound wise, the soundtrack is ok but not among the best in the series. A couple of the tracks just sound weird. The Scenario Campaign, which is the 3D beat-em-up mode, seems to have taken center stage and was probably the focus of way to much time and energy on the part of Namco. After all the effort on their part, it doesn't even play well enough to justify the sacrifice. It's just not fun and it's not why we play Tekken. The biggest omission is the Story Mode that rewardedus with a cool cinematic for each character. Their whole reason for being in the King of Iron Fist Tournament. After too many attempts to beat Azazel, the games disappointing final boss, I was rewarded with end credits. The cinematics are why we play through every character and now there isn't that motivation to do so anymore. The difficulty has been ramped up alot to the point of frustration on anything past "EASY", which isn't all that easy either. The last thing that stands out this year are the loading times. Even though they aren't that long, they've never shown up in previous Tekkens and I don't see the reason for it here. I found that installing the game to the hard drive helps but it takes up alot of memory and we shouldn't have to do it in the first place. We want our fighting games fast and ready to go. So that's it for me. It felt different from the first time I popped it in and played it but now I know why. I've accepted it and I'm gonna keep on playing it but I don't think it'll dethrone Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection as the true King of the Iron Fist. Here's to hoping Namco figures this out and gives us a better Tekken 7.

Street Fighter IV Review

Street Fighter IV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
THUMBS UP TO:

The graphics. They're the best yet of the series and the characters look 3D while still retaining their 2D spirit. Street Fighter wasn't meant to be played in 3D and gladly, they keep this tradition going. There's one word for the graphics: spectacular.

The sound. Surround sound ensures that you hear the hits connecting all around you, especially when an ultra combo is involved.

The characters. Some of them are kinda goofy but for the most part, just about all the characters you know and love return. Fans of Street Fighter 2 will be the most pleased I think. You get 16 to start but that number grows once you unlock the rest. Actually, I have a bone to pick regarding the final boss but I'll save that for later.

Unlockables. Lots of stuff to unlock, guaranteeing multiple playthroughs. You can also download costumes online.... for a fee of course.THUMBS IN BETWEEN TO:

The gameplay. It's classic Street Fighter with a couple of additions to it, namely Ultra Combos and Focus Attacks. I think for the most part this game plays well with the standard Xbox 360 gamepad but some of those specials are nearly impossible to pull off in the heat of battle with it. This game practically cries for the arcade joystick but the question remains: Do you really want to drop that much cash on a joystick, no matter how well made it is?

Online play. For the most part, its lag free and controls quite well. Still, you'll have to contend with some pretty cheesy tactics from online players. No different from playing the game at your local arcade except now you can get cheesed in the comfort of your own home.

THUMBS DOWN TO:

Seth, the final boss. Wow. I mean, it's Street Fighter and I expect a little bit of cheese but this character is literally one of the biggest blocks of pure cheddar that I have ever faced. This guy does things that are so unfair that it almost feels like a joke that you're not in on. And he looks like a cross between the Silver Surfer and Dr. Manhattan from the Watchmen, only with a spinning Yin-Yang in his midsection. I didn't feel like he was too inspired in all honesty and his cheesy nature just makes me want to throw my controller through the screen, Wii-remote style.

Anime cut scenes. Badly produced with horrendous voice acting. Thankfully you can switch the voiceovers to Japanese but c'mon its Street Fighter! The series that took everyone's money for years! You mean to tell me that they couldn't have delivered some slick anime type deals to head and tail each characters storylines with some decent work?

VERDICT:

I'd recommend this game as it caters to both the newbie and the expert Street Fighter player. The CPU can be downright ridiculous even at the medium levels though to that point where we've all reached, where we look up at the ceiling and ask, "What is it you want from me, huh? My blood? My life? My firstborn?!?"

Still, the game is loads of fun to play and offers some very decent online play to boot. The graphics and effects are fantastic and on the right setup provides a visual and aural feast. Just be prepared to keep from chucking your controller once Seth comes around.

Jade Empire Special Edition Review

Jade Empire Special Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A note on my ratings and preferences:
I have never been able to come close to giving a game 5 stars. There are just way too many ways for a game to go wrong. I am not opposed, indeed I dream of encountering a 5 star game. It has just never happened. 5 stars would mean it was a work of art.4 stars means it was a truly excellent game that I highly recommend, but it will still have problems. 3 stars is mainly positive but with notable problems- worth trying depending on your preferences. 2 stars is seriously problematic and not recommended.
I prefer storyline and character in a game. I am not terribly good at games and have a very low frustration level and so like the difficulty on the easy side, however, I will fight through difficult play if I really like the game. I read complaints sometimes about games being too short, but I have yet to find one that was too short and rarely finish the games I play.My favorite genres are rpgs and action adventure, but I will try anything.

Jade empire, a beautiful game I loved, is a classic example of the four stars above. Easily one of the best games I ever played I can still name a lot of small things wrong with it.It's funny, before I started playing computer/video games in the current 3D generation I would have assumed that a great many of these games would be much like jade empire. These would be games with strong stories, meaningful dialogue choices, intelligible character development, people to talk to, heroism, at least somewhat diverse challenges, and, yes, fighting. It is still surprising to me how rare bioware is and how rare a game like this is.I mean, I finished this excellent game about 5 minutes ago, I appreciated it, even loved it a good bit, and I really don't want to sound like a complainer, but sometimes I feel like this is the 10,000 pound elephant in the room nobody ever ever talks about and I find I just need to now, here, after this very enjoyable game. It's like this. What if you loved movies, but no one had ever made anything like, I don't know, the godfather (pick your own; what I mean is a masterpiece, Casablanca, sunset boulevard, fanny and Alexander, whatever). What if the only movies were like, oh, at best, superman returns (by this I mean a good popcorn genre movie, a good movie, a fun movie)? What if two or three movies came out a year that were even as good as superman returns and the rest were various levels of worse. That's how I feel about games, that's where I think we are with games, and sometimes I feel stupid for liking them or for believing, hoping, waiting for them to be more. And sometimes I get so tired of the hype, the games that score 100 or 5 stars or whatever, games I like but still think, yeah, but it's just a game. There are thousands and thousands of movies, songs, paintings, books, that stand in some other realm of power. Maybe a game is just different and cannot go there, but somehow I think they can and I await the people with the vision and talent and courage to take the first game over. I do think it's possible and I do think bioware, the people who made Jade Empire are probably the most likely of all the people currently making games to do this.

Okay. I will rate on these categories:

Difficulty: excellent! There are difficulty levels (which I love with a burning passion, and see no good reason not to have). I think there were three and I unlocked a fourth when I finished on easy. Easy was very very easy and I imagine on normal I would have been fine, maybe dying six or a dozen times, but I love cruising through the combat. It helps make the walking around, talking, collecting parts of the game that I so enjoy that much larger. It also alleviated some of the issues concerning sluggish, non responsive controls that, fairly speaking, had something to do with my framerates and fading computer. The rpg elements were quite clear and sensible and dialogue/puzzles and navigation were pretty simple. I actually hate to say it since it didn't bother me really, but a wee bit more challenge on dialogue and puzzles might have been okay, I'm just thinking of a little more kotor type things, just, maybe something with a little math or something. But, really, for me very high marks on this, if you like things deadly challenging, complex, obtuse, involved, you might not be so happy.

Graphics:very very nice, varied and pretty environments. It is in no way a jaw dropper like oblivion or something, but on the other hand, unlike oblivion, its environments tend to be on the wilder more inventive side which makes up for a lot.Indeed I think that is the more important to me.Also the characters look really quite good. I enjoyed walking around the world looking around, though it had its limits- mainly that the view always seemed a bit hemmed in, not a lot, I'm just saying getting to a high spot didn't really lay it all out for you. I liked the Far East setting, particularly for being modestly original. After getting a ps2 and trying some of that system's rather overrated japanese rpgs it was funny to finally play a game with actual Asian characters and have it be made in the west.

Storyline:very good, well paced, interesting and clear. The characters and character interaction in say, knights of the old republic 2, was deeper and to me better (I compare because these are both similar and the best of their kind). Also there was a section of kotor 2 that hinted at greatness and there was no moment like that in jade empire, but on the other hand jade told a whole story that was complete in itself. It made basic sense and didn't dissipate into emptiness or nonsense. This is a more rare and valuable quality than one might think in gaming. I also really liked that you really moved through the story, there weren't any big actions or sections that felt so separate, like, here's the gameplay and the story is over there. The meaningful dialogue was really important to making that happen and the more I see of that in games the happier I shall be.Of course, the lack of regenerating enemies, random fights, and leveling up also added to the pace and the immersion of the storyline. The game handled serious stuff pretty well, but the comic relief stuff was fairly weak though the crazy inventor may have had a moment or two. Everything about this game was elevated by the totally great and professional 100 percent voiced dialogue. So, if it were a book with this story, or a movie, kind of cleaned up, it might be a C or something. For a game it was great, maybe an A- (I don't know where these grades started coming from all of the sudden).

Gameplay: Sorry, this is getting ridiculously long so I'll try and move along. Let's see, loved the dialogue stuff, just talking to people and basically doing quests that involved talking. I mean, loved it. I only wish there was more of it and more complex, especially using charm or intuition which I went to some trouble to develop very highly but too rarely got a chance to employ, especially in the last third of the game. I'd read the complaints about the simplified rpg elements with stats and equipment and all so was more surprised at how much there actually was to it. But that's just expectation. In reality It was pretty slim, no clothes or armor or weapons (sort of) and you don't do anything with companions stats or anything. I think you do tend to have more money than things to buy and your development is maybe more standardized underneath than it seems. The biggest diversity in the development mainly comes in the weapon styles and it's most meaningful because you can only develop a small percentage significantly. Only one companion travels with you at a time, but that was actually better than I thought too. There are enough cutscenes and gathering spots to feel like you're a little group. Navigation is clear and pretty fun. Minigame is fun enough. Load times for everything are shortish. The amount of fighting in this game, while significant, is, thank the celestial bureaucracy, definitely less than most, and in a way that tends to leave you in the game world more and in your stat screens less (though maybe a little too much less, but barely). I will add, mainly since I've been messing some with the PS2, that there is no nonsense about fights taking place somewhere else, out of nowhere, or with load screens (god how a hate that stuff). You see an enemy, you fight it.

Okay, I rarely finish games, but I did everything possible in this game and it took me 31 hours.I really liked it and in the middle dreaded that it had to end at some point- a way I feel when I'm reading a book I like a lot, but so very rarely with games. I would rate Jade Empire on a level with maybe 4 or 5 other games ever! Everything else would rate below it.I strongly recommend it if you're at all inclined. Good luck.
