Legend Of Legaia Review

Legend Of Legaia
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
first of all, this was my first RPG ever. its the reason i got into them at all. i rented it and loved the graphics and gameplay, so i bought it. after playing other RPGs like ff8 and chrono trigger, i'd have to say thisisnt my favorite, but i still look back at it lovingly. the fight system isreally amazing. you punch in each individual blow for every character, thenwatch as it happens, or you select your ra-seru to summon a monster whoyou've already beaten to attack. the seru videos are beautiful and theattacks are useful. the absense of the active time bar is a little lazy, but it allows you to really think it all out. the story is pretty good andwhen you revive a genesis tree and that music kicks in, it's very touching.speaking of music, the legend of legaia soundtrack is very good. i've readin reviews that the music wasn't that good, but i thought it was great. theboss music is particularly good. the graphics are great too. the fightscenes are very bright and colorful. i really don't see how they fit it allon one disc, other than the absense of many cinema scenes. the level ofchallenge is also a plus. the last boss took me six tries,... SIX. i onlyhave a few complaints. first, there isn't very much room for exploration.in other RPG titles, some huge parts are optional and take place onsecluded islands. second, the characters aren't very deep. really the mostinteresting is songi. Vahn is just a grapic basically, because you chooseeverything he says, making you the character. also, its a little too hardto level up. overall though, it's a great game, and a good first RPG.

Silent Hill V.2 Review

Silent Hill V.2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
THE SHORT: Great music from a great game, it covers the main themes and more recognizable stuff but doesn't have a lot of the more atmospheric, less musical tracks present in the game.

THE LONG: Along with great presentation and what I believe to be one of the finest overall stories in gaming, Silent Hill 2 is also memorable due to its music. This stands true to the series entire, as all those aspects make it what it is. But after the PS2 allowed for richer sound and before everything in the series began to stray just a bit with part 3, SH2 nailed the ambient tunes most proficiently.

The only problem is, not all of the music from the game is on this disc. It couldn't be, it would take at least two discs. I know because I burned the rest onto a cd and there were still some tracks left behind (more on that in a minute). But the important thing is, most of the music you'll remember from the game is on here: The gorgeous and haunting mandolin-rich opening theme, the tunes to some of the more tense and dramatic moments, and all of the ending credit themes are accounted for here (except for the Dog ending). It's the most accessible way to present the game's music to the mainstream public.

But that's where the one complaint comes in- so much of what makes these games unique is their gorgeous, purely ambient mood music. You know the stuff- most of it doesn't have a beat and it's the quiet but building stuff that you hear in the background as you explore. When James goes deep into Silent Hill's historical society, and its holes and underground prison, you're treated to a slightly melodic bit of sound that appears to be a man droning away in the darkness, his voice distorted as if just letting sound come out of his throat as he slowly contorts his yawning mouth. And there's more percussive stuff, the likes of which were expertly described as (and I paraphrase from memory) "a rumbling machine, similar to that of a washer and deep in an empty factory somewhere, which starts emitting a gravelly alarm until some creature comes by to apparently turn it off". This is the kind of rattling, distant distress noise that provides an undercurrent to the action in the game, and since it's designed to occur while James explores (or flees), some of it doesn't even turn into recognizable music until halfway through a twelve-minute piece. I'm guessing that this is why it wasn't included on the soundtrack.

But the good thing is, these tunes are available In mp3 format on at least one very helpful site that I ran across. While it wouldn't be right to list the name, the site owner was very responsible: He offered the tracks for others' enjoyment simply because they aren't commercially available, and refused to provide the ones that are, because he doesn't want to risk infringement or impede on the success of others' work. Because of this site (and there may be others but I didn't need to continue looking), the ambient score of the game is available as well.

It's hard to say which is better, since both the ambient score and commercial soundtrack each have several choice cuts on them. While I have more favorites on the score, it's music that is best listened to loud and alone or outside at night, preferably in uncertain territory. Trust me, it really causes anxiety. But then this soundtrack itself is a worthy purchase, since it is some good and recognizable music from a game full of good stuff. For example "Promise" is a sad tune of defeat and longing (which plays over one of the more dark endings) whereas "Black Fairy" captures the woozy, confused mix of emotions that main character James feels at the end of the game. Most of the pieces on this soundtrack, not the score, are more listenable or definable tunes. If you're interested, buy the one and download the other- they make a great set (I dubbed the second cd "Deeper Into Silent Hill"). Either way, you'll get a fix of some good old-fashioned music for the dark, and put together, you have pretty much all the music from the game- recognizable and ambient.

(On a side note, the Silent Hill film is currently being developed and the team is so far planning to use the game's original music from the score. Being that writer Roger Avery prefers Silent Hill 2, this soundtrack may be some of what is heard onscreen. We'll see!)

Primal Rage Review

Primal Rage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before our time, giant monsters walked the Earth as gods. Somehow, for thousands of years, they were suspended in space, unable to break free. Now, a meteor strikes Earth and devastates our civilization. The continents shift into seven new masses of land. And, worst of all, the ancient gods are set loose upon the planet. They must battle to the death until there is only one left, who will become the ruler of the new Earth. You dive into this grim new world in an attampt to be that lucky one. Choose your fighter -- any of seven giant monsters ready to annihilate. You must conquer each continentby destroying the god who inhabits it. After you've achieved world domination, there is a grand finale waiting for you with the toughest battle yet (I won't give anything away about this, but you can be assured it's a real mind-blower). Do you have what it takes to rule this planet and make the few humans left in it's ruins your worshipping slaves? We'll see about that!

Primal Rage is a fighting game similar to Mortal Kombat. You battle with a side-view of both characters on the screen. Special moves and fatalities are included. And, in addition to the usual health meter, there is a smaller meter with your brain next to it. When the fliud in the bar runs out, you are flung into a daze and temporarily immobilized (this decreasing of the fluid occurs more and more when you're getting beat up). The graphics are also very satisfying, with stop-motion animation that gives you that classic arcade feel. The visuals are great, and the characters are just plain awesome. So, speaking of characters, here is a summarization of the fighters and their battlegrounds:

ARMADON: Much like a brown triceratops (although it stands on two feet) with spikes and horns as his main weapons. He lives in "The Hollows", an underground cave-like setting.
BLIZZARD: Basically a huge blue gorilla with wild hair. Powers of the cold (you know, kind of like "Sub-Zero" in MK) are his main weapons. He lives in "The Cliff", a mountainous area with lots of snow and ice.
CHAOS: Another giant ape, although a bit smaller than Blizzard and red in color. Much of his fighting power comes in the form of his control over his bodily fluids (yeah, this dude's kinda nasty). He lives in "The Ruins", which is basically a destructed city.
DIABLO: Much like a red T-Rex. His main weapons would probably be considered his power over fire. Lives in "The Inferno", which is basically a crumbly land full of valcanos.
SAURON: Another T-Rex-like character, this one being a yellowish tint. He doesn't really have many supernatural powers or a "theme", so his main weapons would probably just be his strength and massive size. He dwells in "The Cove", a sandy area next to the ocean (yes, like a beach, but it's not really as pathetic as it sounds).
TALON: Much like a Velociraptor. This little booger's fast and sharp, so his main danger would have to be those claws! He lives in "The Strip", which appears to be a spot of grasslands.
VERTIGO: Like some wicked mix between a snake and an I-don't-know-what-the-hell-it-could-be-but-it-sure-is-ugly, this is the only female in the game. Her powers are those of mind-tricks mostly. She lives in "The Tomb", a Stonehenge-style grassy area.

In conlusion, this is obviously a great game. But, of course, you've got to play it to appreciate it. I'm not huge on video games, but I've always enjoyed Primal Rage to it's fullest. With plenty of reason to play this over and over again, I'd recommend it to any fan of fighting games. Lot's of fun, plenty of gore, and a great theme/storyline.

(Note: Technically, this review was written for the PC version, yet there is pretty much no difference between the two. So these comments are in reference to either one.)

PRIMAL RAGE is a fighting game that allows you to fight with beasts instead of people. In the near future, seven imprisoned gods are freed from suspended animation after a meteor strikes Earth. These gods represent the spirits of Hunger and Survival, Life and Death, Insanity, Decay, and Good and Evil. Each of the seven gods taking on the physical form of a prehistoric beast sets out to conquer the new "Urth." Playing as one of the gods, you can choose which beast you want to become and then jump into the ring and pound your opponent with reckless abandon as you battle other beasts in head-to-head combat for Urth domination.

I never played the original Strider, but I loved this game.Okay, so I could beat in under an hour, but I kept coming back for more.It is one of those games that you will return to after you beat it over and over again. It is almost too easy however, so it can be beaten in at least an hour. That is what keeps this game from getting five stars.Be warned that if you like spectacular graphics, you will be very dissapointed. However, this game proves that games with okay graphics can sometimes be the most fun.

Panzer Front Review

Panzer Front
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For all those of you like myself who are sick of driving games, sports games or 1st player shooters where you have to duel it out with some sort of futuristic E.T. your prayers have been answered at last. Panzer Front delivers! This game contains almost forty WW2 tank types, some are variants such as the Sherman M4 and it's upgraded relative the M4A1. You will find American, German, Russian and British tanks in this game, the Firefly (a gunned up version of the Sherman is listed as British) there is also a section with 6 futuristic tanks, at least one of those (in this game called the Short Bull which had four treads) inspired on real plans. There are many different senarios to play, in each of them you have the ability to play the sides as it happened back in the day or you can pick your steed from the large selection. The controls are complex but there is a beginner mode. If you decide to play the more complex levels you will be forced to learn the gearbox, correct ammo selection (HEAT, HE, Smoke, machine gun and a couple others) and many other features. Outside of the beginner mode this is not an easy game to sit down and be succesful at in a hurry, there is a tutorial option that lectures you on tactics and equipment. Some of the more famous WW2 tank engagements can be played which I really loved. I have only two complaints, when setting the sound the button labled Audio controls the music and the button labled Music controls the audio, and after your tank is knocked out the senario is over, I wish command would just switch to the next friendly tank. You are able to select sound effects, over 60 settings of clinking treads, shell-casings being ejected and cannon reports. You can call in arty fire missions wihich are super acurate and super destructive, you can assign some tanks to attack or defend but some of your tanks are controlled by the computer. I played the Americans attacking the Ludendorf Railway bridge at Remagen, my little M4A1s did well until the big German Anti-Tank guns (some are the deadly Flak 88, others are the little PAK 37) found their range. The baddest real tank is the Hunting Tiger, it has a gun over 120mm, big even by today's standards. The game does a good job of illustrating the strengths and weakness's of each tank, the super heavies (like the King Tiger) have great protection but are pretty slow, American M4s and Russian T-34s are much faster. The optics on the German Tanks are better. There is supporting and enemy infantry, machine gun will take them out but an armour peircing shell will do next to nothing, like I said, pretty realistic. The big question....is this game worth [the money], well only you can answer that, it sure was for me. If you like realistic war games buy it at once, no need to rent it, this game is a winner. I have Battletanx and this game is light years way more advanced than that. A previous reviewer said that this game was more like a computer game, that's a big 10-4, he is right on target. I played the Panther G in the famous Barkman's Corner senario vs the M4s in Normandy, the Shermans didn't get me (when they did the thick armour saved me) but the allied air power did, watch out. I tailor made one senario in which I took on over 25 Josef Stalin and T-34 tanks with one Tiger1, a Tiger2, a PantherA and a Stug Assualt gun over rough terrain with my tanks using buildings for cover, you can do stuff like that with this game, by WW2 standards it would have been a draw, the high velocity 88s were picking off the commies at distances of up to 6,270 ft (my personal best) but when the surviving Russians got into lethal gun range (which don't take long because T-34s move quick) I got a bloody nose before they retired and left me the field. Great game, THANKS Tommo!

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Review

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night harkens back to the early and great Castlevanias of the old NES, but with vastly updated graphics, gameplay, and even ambiance.Sure, it's still a 2-D scroller where you roam around and jump around on platforms and what not, but it's at the top of the heap. The game starts somewhat oddly with you as a vampire hunter facing off against Dracula in a fairly wacky fight that always reminds me of a pro wrestling match. You beat Dracula, at which point time warps ahead and you switch to Alucard, Dracula's remorseful son (spell Alucard backwards..yah, clever) who brings the fight to Dracula's vast and labyrinthe castle in an effort to do away with his evil sire for all time.At first I was put off by what I thought was a bizarre and inelegant introduction (the human vampire hunter is a character from one of the mediocre middle Castlevania games, and is very unwieldy) but it turns out the manner in which you use him to defeat Dracula "historically" in the plot affects Alucard's starting abilities.Meaning if you beat up on Drakula with magic, Alucard later favors magic.Ditto for melee combat.
Anyway, the game is lush and filled with endless amounts of loot.Any monster has a chance to drop rare goodies when slain (based on Alucard's Luck stat), fake walls crumble to reveal hidden platemail, accidentally-tripped switches open bookcases or trapdoors, and zillions of types of monsters appear from all over the place. The music is great and quite haunting, and the game's RPG and money system are quite well developed.Alucard has quick "combo" spells you can use while fighting, and many of the weapons, shields, and armors he finds have their own effects which have to be discovered in game play.I've located weapons that let Alucard teleport, summon the undead to fight for him, call lightning, ice, or fire, or even waves of holy light down on his foes.Everything from helms to circlets to rings to boots can be worn, and Alucard eventually even develops the ability to transform into traditional vampire modes.Dissipate into a swirling cloud of mist and waft through a ceiling vent to escape your enemies, turn into a wolf and charge through crowds of zombies, or transform into a bat and fly around breathing fire on everyone.Lastly Alucard collects various magical relics throughout the game, that do everything from let him breathe underwater to have permament familiars that float around with him on screen and help him out (the dancing runesword is not to be missed). As an example of the thought put into this game, your familiars themselves even gain experience and go up levels, growing both stronger and smarter over time. For example, the runesword familiar at first just kinda floats along behind you, lethargically swinging at things long after they took a bite out of you.But after a while it turns into a gleaming heat seeking weapon of vengeance, mercilessly smiting anything the second it shows up on screen. At one point I turned Alucard into mist and just drifted around while the sword familiar took out a boss for me.This game also has more items and secrets in it than your average Final Fantasy, and is more addictive. It is also one of the least frustrating games you can find; you can save as often as you want in save rooms you find on your map (in a coffin, natch), heal yourself easily, and as a vampire you're more than a match for the sluggish beasts you meet early on.The challenge of the game comes from an easy balance of combat and puzzle solving, rather than a heavy reliance on one or the other.
Lastly, and most entertainingly, the bosses in this game are amazing.Unlike earlier side scrollers where the game progressed through 'levels', in Symphony of the Night you simply roam around an enormous, maze-like castle. You never know when suddenly a steel grate will drop behind you and you'll find yourself trapped in a fight with, oh, a grotesque giant mummy suspended on steel hooks that takes up 6 screens worth of animation. That's just the sort of thing that's worth the price of admission.

I bought this game 3 days ago and I have played it for probably about 20 hours in those three days. The graphics are amazing with no draw-ins or flaws to be found. The tracks are varied so you never get bored and thegame play never seems repetitive.Once you win a race (in Adventure mode;there are about 6 different modes of play and you can choose the difficultylevel) you have to go back over the same track to obtain the letters 'C"T' and 'R' and win the race again; once you are through with that you goback and try to win a "gem" by having an amazingly quick time. Once you win four races you race the boss one on one. With all of this todo the replay value seems endless. This is by far my favorite racing game(a lot more fun than Gran Turismo) and favorite game overall for the timebeing. If you don't have this game - GET IT!If you have this game - stopreading this and go play it!

Crash Bash Review

Crash Bash
Average Reviews:

Ever since the debut of Nintendo's "Mario Party", the multiplayer party genre is suddenly popular. Now the PlayStation's mascot, Crash, is jumping onto the bandwagon with "Crash Bash". It's the first game developed without Naughty Dog, who created Crash's first four games; instead, it's developed by Eurocom and Mark Cerny. For a first shot, Eurocom has done a great job with living up to Naughty Dog's legacy.
You can play as one of eight characters: Crash, Coco (Crash's sister), Dr. Neo Cortex (Crash's enemy), Dr. N. Brio (Cortex's rival), Tiny, Dingodile, and Koala Kong (Cortex's henchmen), and Kangorilla (a new character). There are also some secret characters, including Ripper Roo (a psychotic kangaroo in a straitjacket) and Penta Penguin.
There's a total of 28 different games to play. One example is a game where you ride on polar bears and joust each other while trying to avoid falling off of the slippery, swaying iceberg on which you're battling. In another, you bounce on pogo sticks and try to make the bricks of the platform you're bouncing on a solid color. There's even a game where you drive through a maze in a tank and blast each other with missiles and mines. Some games, though, are variants of classic games, such as air hockey, racing (although in this, you race in bumper cars rather than go-karts), and standard fighting, e.g. throwing TNT at each other and using your special 'power', etc.
The game allows for 1-4 players, and offers so much fun, you'll get addicted instantly. You'll definitely enjoy it!

We've all been waiting 10 years for a decent spiderman game. After dealing with the garbage that was released on the Genesis and Super Nintendo, Neversoft, responsible for the amazing Tony Hawks Pro Skater, stepped up tothe box, and makes one of the PSXs best games. The game pits you as PeterParker or more famously known as Spiderman. You explore the streets of NYClooking for trouble, and it pops up often. You battle all the well knownbad guys, from Rhino to Venom to Dr. Octopus, they are all here. Thedevelopers have done an AMAZING job of bringing spidey to the console. Theuse of his Web and Spidey Sense are amazingly put into the game, and thephysics are unbeliveable. Add to that, some of the best graphics yet seenon the PlayStation, and you can see why this game is just so good. Themusic perfectly fits the atmosphere of the game, and times, up and catchy, and at others, dark and suspenseful. You will have to solve puzzels alongthe way, and encounter all the charcters you know from the tv and comicseries. The game is not all action either, many times you will be low onhealth, and will have to rely on stealth to make your way through thelevel. All these aspects are pulled into the game to create the bestspiderman game ever, and one of the best games period for the PlayStation.

Parasite Eve Review

Parasite Eve
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to personally say this game is one of the best games Squaresoft has ever come accross. They also need to create more games like this one. An organism which is dubbed Mitochondria has been living within humans eversense the birth of Eve. Since all humans are descended from Eve it is onlya matter of time before this living organism breaks free. You play the roleof a rookie cop named Aya who is attending an opera on Christmas Eve 1997.The singer in the opera named Melissa makes eye contact with Aya and all ofa sudden people in the crowd begin to spontaneously combust. Followingthis, Melissa mutates and declears that Eve has been awakened and takesoff. From there on out Aya tries to figure out what happened at the operahouse and why her and Melissa are some how connected.
A thrilling storywhich brings the human imagination into a battle against not only a raceagainst time and mutations, but a battle against yourself.Seeing asthough the Mitochondria is in every human being on the face of the Earth, players can put themselves in that position, and feel as though they arebattling against themselves before there Mitochondria takes completecontrol over everything logic in their bodies. It also can make you thinkthis could happen in reality b/c of the Mitochondria is part of yourbody.
The best part of Parasite Eve is without a doubt the innovativebattle scenes. The Parasite Eve battle engine contains an excellent mix ofaction and strategy that has yet to be seen in any console game before.Just like Final Fantasy VII, Parasite Eve makes use of an action bar. Youcan't attack, heal, or use an item until the bar is fully charged. You canhowever during this time dodge enemy attacks waiting for it to fill. Youalso have a PE bar which will fill slowly throughout the course of thebattle. The PE bar allows Aya to perform special tasks such as healingherself or increasing her attack power. Overall, the battle system isextremely innovative and makes the game fun to play through. I don't thinki've played an RPG in awhile in which I've actually looked forward togaining experience and doing battle.
True to its claims, Parasite Eveoften looks sleek, inspired, and beautiful - like a good film. The scenerythroughout the game is composed of still 3D-rendered images of mostlyauthentic New York locales, and the quality and detail of these varioussettings is astounding. Whether you're searching through Central Park inthe middle of the night or rummaging through the slums early in themorning, Parasite Eve looks consistently real. The background art looks sogood that you will often find yourself admiring your surroundings insteadof forging onward in your quest. The various polygonal characters aren'tquite as sharp as the backdrops, but their motions and actions during plotsequences are expressive and believable. As Aya, you will have to shootyour way past scores of monsters, all of which are your typical mutatedurban animal variety and thence not particularly imposing. Though some ofthe boss monsters are both creepy and fearsome, like a particularly largeand ill-tempered three-headed hound, for the most part your opposition willfail to impress.
Even a discriminating connoisseur of CG cinematics wouldbe awestruck at several animated cutscenes over the course of Parasite Eve.While the cinematic sequences are never particularly long, they arefrequent and almost always amazing - all the more so toward the end of thegame. Among other things, you'll witness breathtaking panoramic shots ofNew York City, grisly deaths or even grislier metamorphoses, and even somegood old-fashioned military intervention. Though there's hardly enough CGhere to make up a feature-length film, there's plenty of the stuff to keepyou going all the way through. It's integrated seamlessly into the game andmakes key plot sequences much more dramatic and the entire game morememorable overall. The music also adds a dramatic effect that makes itseem even more real. They need to add this music to more of their sequelsto this game.
If Squaresoft works hard enough I honestly believe moresequels to this like the Nintendo's Zelda could be created but these wouldwithout a question blow Zelda out of the water.I truly think a movieshould be created about this game.Including part 2,3,4 whatever how many, following up on the "Ultimate Being".Also the music needs to beadded to the movies.
My overall rating:* * * * * out of 5 stars. Myoverall rating:10 out of 10 Would I buy a sequel: yes without a doubtWould I pay to see a movie about this:yes, of courseand I know otherswho would too.

I was a little surprised by the earlier negative review based on how easy this game was. The thing I found best about it was that the difficulty is completely variable. Each world/level has many optional tasks that you canchoose to perform or to skip. I can see that you could hurry through bydoing just the minimum for each level but where's the fun in that? It is amarvellous antedote for the rest of the tacky, poorly conceived games thatI have rented for my 7 year old daughter and is the ONLY one I have had anyinterest in playing myself. Resident Evil 3: Nemisis is a most enjoyable and thoroughly terrifying game. If you love a good scare, along with a really fun game to play, this is your ticket! Although you don't have to have played any of the previousResident Evil games to enjoy this, it would help. In any event, thescenario puts you into the heart of a town, Racoon City, being overrun withflesh eating zombies, ghastly mutated monsters and a big nasty killingmachine by the name of Nemisis, all of whom have one thing on their minds:Kill you and make it very bloody and painful. Luckily, you, playing underthe characters of Jill Valentine and Carlos, in respective portions of thegame, come armed with some heavy duty firepower and the ability to outrunall of your attackers, even Nemisis if you're smart enough. This gamedoesn't shortchange you when it comes to horror; you will have the williesafter playing this. I certainly did. It also delivers the goods on the gorefactor too, so if you're squeamish, better to stay away, or look away atleast when you open fire on the walking dead. There are also puzzles totease your brain, as well as a good storyline worthy of a major motionpicture. George Romero, director of the Night of the Living Dead, alongwith it's two sequels, would be proud of this zombie fest. On the downside, most of my complaints are with the storyline, more then anything else. InResident Evil 2, certain things were explained and you understood thesinister greed behind the Umbrella Company's virus that turns people intozombies. Here, there doesn't seem to be much motivation behind a team ofcommandos, of which Carlos is one, for entering the fray. Also, thecharacter of Nemisis himself is never explained, as no mention is made ofwhere he comes from or why he's obsessed with killing the remainingS.T.A.R.S. rescue team, of which Jill is one. In Resident Evil 2, you foundout that the behemoth who kept popping up to kill you at certain points wasactually a scientist who injected himself with the G-virus. No such motivehere for Nemesis, but in the grand scheme of this game, it's a minor flaw. So, if you're wondering if you should invest in this game or not, I sayYES! Fire up your Playstation, Lock and load, try not to get eaten, and ifyou get really scared, leave the lights on when you play this!Welcome tothe world of survival horror...

Silent Hill Review

Silent Hill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not easily scared. In fact, of every "scary" movie I've seen, nothing has come close to unnerving me besides maybe In the Mouth of Madness. This game, however, is sufficiently creepy to make me love it and hate it at the same time. It's almost masochistic playing it, but maybe I'm masochistic, because I've beaten it 6 times so far, and I plan on playing it some more. It just scares the hell out of me every time.
I won't get into the plot as figuring it out is half the fun (and you WILL have to do some figuring. I'm pretty sure a lot was lost in the translation from Japanese because the story can be hard to follow at times).
In order for the game to be rewarding, though, it requires patience, along with nerves of steel and an iron stomach. The game starts out with a bang (or a bunch of dead, moaning, faceless knife weilding babies stabbing you to death within 3 minutes of play, I guess that counts as a bang, right?) This is misleading, though, as the game then calms down considerably for about the next 45 minutes of game time. Before we go on, though, two things: 1) The graphics are fairly blocky, but, for reasons that will become apparent, this doesn't matter. They're well textured, which is much more important. 2) The sound is PHENOMINAL. Always bear this in mind.
You wander the fog enshrouded town of Silent Hill searching for your daughter. Now, here's the great part about this game. It just seems so WRONG from the very beginning. The town is built right to scale and rendered in totality. You can, in theory, go anywhere. You even get a street map (complete with names like Koontz street and Bachman ave. Get it?) After a little exploration, though, you'll find something is amiss. The goal early on is to get to the local elementary school, and this seems easy enough with a street map, but there's one minor problem. The streets have this tendancy to just...end. All major roads leading to the school are just gone. Not there. They stop, and all you can see in the distance is the the fog. Add to this the "monsters" lurking the town. These basically consist of skinless dogs and large pink birdman things, who don't seem so terrifying, really. You get a radio that emits static when enemies draw near, but more on that later. This is all part of the game's attempt to unnerve you. Before you know it, you're across the chasm of the roads and now the REAL fun starts. Now, it's suddenly dark. Pitch black, in fact. You get a weak little flashlight with which to see (a pocket light, really) and THAT'S IT. Now, let's see. We're in a deserted town haunted by things that, while kind of weak and stupid looking, want to kill you. We could see just fine in the fog, but now it's dark. Right. So, we're off to the school, and now things get worse. The dogs are faster now (one constant in the game: The darker it gets, the more powerful and evil the enemies become), and now that you can't see them, it makes shooting at them much harder since they never stand still, really, and all you have to aim with is a weak cone of light that doesn't extend very far. Plus, as you'll soon happily discover after wasting 3 clips firing at the spot where a dog just was, ammo is limited! Yay! And the dogs have now been joined by the bird thingies, who ALSO want to kill you! DOUBLE yay!! So, we run now. Run all the way to the school, past the two(!) dogs guarding the entrance, through the door, and BAM! We're alive. Woohoo! Thank God! Now then...The school! Then it dawns on you: You're in a deserted ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. In the black-as-pitch darkness. With...wait for it...things that want to kill you! The knife-baby things, this time. Righty-o! Having fun yet? Oooh, it gets better. After some puzzles, you'll open the clocktower. By this point, it will be apparent that Silent Hill is home to some sick, sick people. I won't go into details, but trust me. So, as you mutter to yourself about the sick inhabitants of this town, you'll be climbing down the clocktower (yes, DOWN. It has a basement. Well...Sort of. You'll see.) It's here, HERE, that the game got to me. When you come back up the other side (bear with me here, it's hard to explain), you're back where you started, in the school courtyard. But not really. It's not the same...Then you go in the doors, and everything is...Aw, I'm not gonna kill it for you. Suffice to say that THIS is where the game goes from creepy to INSANELY CREEPY, and it just gets worse and worse and worse and WORSE as you go on. By the time you finish the school section and see daylight again, it's more of a relief than you can imagine. I was practically cheering my first time through. After that school, well-lit fog is a damned BLESSING!
Little did I know I had a hospital to look foreward to. And yes, as bad as you can possibly think it could be, it's worse. And when you're done with that...you're not even halfway to the end yet.
This game is all about the overhwelming sense of DREAD it will instill in you, making you almost not want to play it anymore. I've had friends hit the hospital section, take one look at their surroundings, and hand me the controller and leave the room. It's not that it's overly gross; it's not. It's just the prospect of having to subject yourself to the Silent Hill version of a freaking HOSPITAL that makes you almost cringe before you even start. And by the time you get there, you know just what the term "Silent Hill version of" means.
For those brave souls who wish to do it alone (which, by the by, I VERY, VERY HIGHLY reccomend your first time through), do it right. Play it in the dark, late at night, ALONE, with some good speakers set up. If you're new to it, start at the beginning, and enjoy the first part of the game. It's a slow starter, but once it gets going, the only reason it lets up is to allow you to contemplate exactly what else it's going to do to you.
Buy this game NOW if you haven't played it, and God help you.
Oh, and the second one is supposed to be twice as bad. I can't wait!

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Review

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow! If you've played the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, no doubt you were amazed. Well this one improves on the original ten-fold.
First of all, there are three new characters, including two of the godfathers of skate; Rodney Mullen and Steve Caballero (who's base stats are amazing to start with!). Also present is Eric Koston, who was recently voted best all-around skater. If you saw him in this year's X-Games, you'll know why.
Secondly, you now have the ability to create your own skateparks! There are a good number of pieces to choose from and the way things can be linked together is very nice. There are also a ton of pre-made parks in the editor that will give you ideas. Many of these are excellent in their own right and they can also be manipulated.
Thirdly, there are a TON of new tricks. All of the ones from the previous game are here, but each player can have two sets of tricks, which can be accessed by double-tapping the grab and flip buttons. This adds an incredible amount of versatility to runs and can help you to have more original lines, which is really important in contest events. Also, the inclusion of manuals is very cool. This means that instead of just normally approaching an object to trick off of, you can manual to it and this gives you constant points. Imagine some of the combos that could be achieved! It takes some getting used to, especially since it means you move more slowly and you have to manually keep your boarder's balance (no pun intended).
Fourthly, the new parks are very cool. Marseilles is the one that was included in the demo for the game, so many of you know how cool that park is already. Venice beach is nice, too. It has a lot of vert areas and even some vagrants to ollie over, I kid you not! People might miss some of the original parks, but with the park editor, you might be able to make a reasonable facsimile.
Fifthly, there is a create-a-skater mode. While it doesn't add too much to the game, it is still nice to see a skater with your name.
On top of all these factors, they've changed the level objectives quite a bit. Now instead of collecting tapes to progress, you must complete certain objectives for money. The money you earn can be used towards buying new boards, buying new tricks (including grabs, flips and specials) and boosting your created-player's stats. Also, as usual, the music in the game is fresh and should appeal to fans of several different styles. The multiplayer modes are standard, but just as awesome as before.
Well, I could say more, but what is there to say that hasn't already been said? Activision and Neversoft have really outdone themselves and continue to show a great deal of respect for the consumers. This is an incredible game in every aspect and should be in the home of every video game fan on the planet! HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE!

Rise To Honor Review

Any enjoyment you might derive from this game is from playing as Jet Li in an old-school fight setting. When the novelty of that wears off, what you have left is an incredibly repetitive game with a godawful camera and an ill-advised control scheme.

Yes, bonus marks are in order for using Cantonese in Hong Kong with subtitles.(As a native Hong Kong person I can say the dialogue is less stilted than usual, though still flawed)Though I might add that international espionage games like Syphon Filter has been doing that for years. The settings are authentic enough, with the battles in the Hong Kong settings being especially evocative of kung fu films.

But is it worth the very problematic gameplay?Just barely. If you've seen/played the demo already, you'll know that the entire fight system consists of slapping the right analog stick. While the array of moves you can unleash is impressive, motion-captured well from Li's own silhouette, this system is very ill conceived from a fighting-game perspective.Worse still, the camera is so restless that you could be in the middle of a combo against an enemy, and then the perspective shifts so that you're suddenly hitting at air and the enemy's to the side.So many game designers have misled notions about being filmmakers, not realizing that the best perspective for gaming is a fixed perspective. This problem came to a head during the ludicrous "escape from capture" stage where the camera actually cuts you off, preventing you from seeing what's behind you, even though there are guards sweeping flashlights that way that you're supposed to avoid! This is simply a moronic use of the camera.

Aside from this, the fighting gets tired awfully quickly, especially since the designers committed the ol' "this level never ends" sin. This game alleviates this problem by having lots of checkpoints where you can continue the game, but during some of the "one against 14" stages, the endless brawling still gets tired. And whose idea was it to have enemies pull off 18-hit combos, where if you get hit the first time, you get to watch your character get pummelled for 10 seconds straight?

I actually find the gunfight segments of this game more fun than the endless, endless hand-to-hand stages. This is where the dual analog sticks truly shine, allowing you to smoothly run from spot to spot forwards and backwards while your hands can aim independently and a top button allows you to do Time Crisis-style ducking. There's even a crazy level where you fight off about 100 enemies with two nailguns!

This game would probably remain tempting to Jet Li fans because of the role-playing aspect of it.And I wouldn't blame them -- this was my reason for buying this game, and there are a few levels that I truly enjoyed. The overall game, however, is really not that great, and I would recommend only playing it in small doses. It will get tired mightily quickly if you sit with it for more than an hour.
