Real War: Rogue States Review

Real War: Rogue States
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Real War enthusiasts will enjoy the latest in the series Rogue States, a Real War upgrade offering logic improvments and new weaponary on both sides. One caveat on this review is that I am basing it on only several "skirmish" episodes and not using online play or running any campaign scenarios
What is there to like...the new weapons, improved graphics, pre-orders for units being built, advanced defense logic for units, movement and attack logic are a definite improvment. All of these make Rogue States a good buy if you want to upgrade from Real War.
What still needs improvment...the movment logic is still a bit off...I tried to send a convoy of tanks at a target and half of them ended up getting stuck trying to cross a river. This has improved quite a bit, this should continue to be improved.I also would like to see Rogue states better integrated with the old Real War...it would be cool to go back and run the old campaign with new weapons. As far as I know this isn't the case.Lastly, there are still issues with forces causing extensive collateral damage...the new weapons are quite effective at takibng out most of your own forces as well as the enemies...I wish there was a bit better intelligence here to prevent this from happening on such a wide scale
What is bad...I am all for new weapons but the ILA (terrorist
group) but the use of experimental weapons gives them a big advantage.A laser cannon that liquidates ground forces instantly seems a bit unfair and unrealistic. The notion of this weapon having a weakness that can be exploited doen't appear obvious in this case. The U.S. doesn't appear to have a similar weapon that is that deadly. The fact that this weapon is super accurate makes ground attacks very frustrating.Combine the Rail Gun with the Super Cannon and Fixed GTA and the ILA base is pretty much impossible to assault...or shall I say your little skirmish you thought would only last 45 minutes will take 4-5 hours of game time.
Those things aside, I would say Rogue States is worth the price. The new weaponary and improved logic will give Real War addics a new opportunity to develop their tactics.Keep in mind too that ReaL War is NOT a pre-requisite for installing Rogue States.

Panzer General Review

Panzer General
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Panzer General is one of the war games released by SSI in the mid 90's based on those hex mapped games you may have seen people playing in the 80's.I had an uncle into those earlier table top games, and I could NEVER figure out just what he was doing.
Panzer General is the computerized version of that, and with its intuitive interface and easy to understand controls, this game is untold hours of fun and stratagem.
I have played it over and again, from different starting points, and you never play the same game twice even if you come back and fo it all over again. This is not only fun war gaming (Think Advanced Wars without the cartoon character commanders) but it is infinitely replayable.
I thought this one had been lost to the advance of OS - as in it doesnt play well in XP, or Vista, but I found a little program to create a better dosbox, and with it, this game has found new life in my house. If you want to try it out, you can get it here:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1
I would HIGHLY suggest, if you havent tried this one out, do it.Panzer General is a MUST play game for strategy fans.

Panzer General II Review

Panzer General II
Average Reviews:

Panzer General is the fountain head for WWII gaming!I realize that this game does not have the "rockets red glare" of other simuation games; however, one can play hours upon hours and not get bored.Further, you do not require a Ph D to understand the instructions nor do you need three hands to play it!

Generally speaking, this game is accurate as it relates to the kinetics and capabilities of the weapon systems found in the game.Further, the rules of combined arms apply as do the principles of war... i.e. security, massing, counter fire, intelligence (via scouts, etc,.

What makes PG even more enjoyable is that there are PG groups on the web that have created more units, equipment, scenarios and campaigns to include non-historical ones that let's one fight hypothetical battles... I recommend that you go on the web and search the sites - this will give you a feel of the game and graphical representations... this should add to your decision cycle further...

The bottom line is that it's an easy game to play, fun and addictive!

World War 2: Fighters Review

World War 2: Fighters
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WW II fighters was one of a pack of four combat flight simulator that came out together in the same one-year period. It proves to be the most beautiful and playable of them all.To start, the graphics arespectacular. They use direct 3D rendering and are completely customizable, allowing many different hardware configurations to run the game well.Thedetails, from explosions and tracer bullets to smoke trails, are stunning. The soundtrack is perhaps the best of any computer game. The music is wellcomposed and appropriate for each situation. The combat sounds enhance therealism of the game. For example, when an enemy barely misses you with hismachine guns, you'll hear the bullets sail past you.The game is alsovery playable and accessible to even the most casual simulator pilot.Aunique camera view in the lower right hand corner is padlocked to yourtarget and indicates its bearing. This makes up for the limitation ofusing a computer screen to take the place of a three dimensional world. The fact that fighters in World War II had none of the onboard radar andavionics of a modern plane means that the simulation is simplified andhence more fun than many of the simulators for modern aircraft.Themissions are challenging, but do not really compose a persistent campaign. I highly recommend this game to those interested in combat flightsimulators. If you don't take my word for it, just try the demo and Ithink you'll be sold.

Panzer Front Review

Panzer Front
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For all those of you like myself who are sick of driving games, sports games or 1st player shooters where you have to duel it out with some sort of futuristic E.T. your prayers have been answered at last. Panzer Front delivers! This game contains almost forty WW2 tank types, some are variants such as the Sherman M4 and it's upgraded relative the M4A1. You will find American, German, Russian and British tanks in this game, the Firefly (a gunned up version of the Sherman is listed as British) there is also a section with 6 futuristic tanks, at least one of those (in this game called the Short Bull which had four treads) inspired on real plans. There are many different senarios to play, in each of them you have the ability to play the sides as it happened back in the day or you can pick your steed from the large selection. The controls are complex but there is a beginner mode. If you decide to play the more complex levels you will be forced to learn the gearbox, correct ammo selection (HEAT, HE, Smoke, machine gun and a couple others) and many other features. Outside of the beginner mode this is not an easy game to sit down and be succesful at in a hurry, there is a tutorial option that lectures you on tactics and equipment. Some of the more famous WW2 tank engagements can be played which I really loved. I have only two complaints, when setting the sound the button labled Audio controls the music and the button labled Music controls the audio, and after your tank is knocked out the senario is over, I wish command would just switch to the next friendly tank. You are able to select sound effects, over 60 settings of clinking treads, shell-casings being ejected and cannon reports. You can call in arty fire missions wihich are super acurate and super destructive, you can assign some tanks to attack or defend but some of your tanks are controlled by the computer. I played the Americans attacking the Ludendorf Railway bridge at Remagen, my little M4A1s did well until the big German Anti-Tank guns (some are the deadly Flak 88, others are the little PAK 37) found their range. The baddest real tank is the Hunting Tiger, it has a gun over 120mm, big even by today's standards. The game does a good job of illustrating the strengths and weakness's of each tank, the super heavies (like the King Tiger) have great protection but are pretty slow, American M4s and Russian T-34s are much faster. The optics on the German Tanks are better. There is supporting and enemy infantry, machine gun will take them out but an armour peircing shell will do next to nothing, like I said, pretty realistic. The big question....is this game worth [the money], well only you can answer that, it sure was for me. If you like realistic war games buy it at once, no need to rent it, this game is a winner. I have Battletanx and this game is light years way more advanced than that. A previous reviewer said that this game was more like a computer game, that's a big 10-4, he is right on target. I played the Panther G in the famous Barkman's Corner senario vs the M4s in Normandy, the Shermans didn't get me (when they did the thick armour saved me) but the allied air power did, watch out. I tailor made one senario in which I took on over 25 Josef Stalin and T-34 tanks with one Tiger1, a Tiger2, a PantherA and a Stug Assualt gun over rough terrain with my tanks using buildings for cover, you can do stuff like that with this game, by WW2 standards it would have been a draw, the high velocity 88s were picking off the commies at distances of up to 6,270 ft (my personal best) but when the surviving Russians got into lethal gun range (which don't take long because T-34s move quick) I got a bloody nose before they retired and left me the field. Great game, THANKS Tommo!

Blitzkrieg Burning Horizon Review

Blitzkrieg Burning Horizon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you enjoyed the original Blitzkrieg PC game, you will probably find Burning Horizons to be even better. You can play a German campaign which encompasses all the actions that Erwin Rommel was involved in, which is a lot of fun.It is much different than the original game that had only 3 or so mission variations. In this campaign, there is a lot of variety in mission goals and execution, with each one being different from the one before. It really makes the game a lot more interesting, as you never really know what to expect. In addition, you can win medals for especially valiant actions on the field; for instance, some of my infantry won the Iron Cross for stopping a tank assault with only some captured howitzers.Besides the campaign, there is also a collection of single-player missions which range in complexity and difficulty. You can now play in areas as diverse as Norway, the Pacific, Ethiopia, and Singapore. There seems to be more of an emphasis on air power in this game as well.It can really make a big difference early on in the game.Overall, if you liked the first game, you will probably love this one.It is not nearly as repetitive as the original, and is much more fun.A down side is the fact that you only have the German campaign, there are no Allied or Russian variants to compliment it, but it is made up for by the list of single-player missions that you can explore.Highly recommended.

Urban Chaos Riot Response Review

Urban Chaos Riot Response
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first, this game seemed different and fun.I enjoyed the first few levels, then it just seemed like I was doing the same thing over and over except this time you're at city hall, or a warehouse or a whatever. Each level starts with a live action news anchor report. You watch all of them at first until you realize it's just the same blah, blah, blah over and over again except this time she's taking about the city hall, or a warehouse or a whatever.I simply tuned out.The gameplay just got tired after awhile.

I guess I had a problem with the premise of the game as well.Thousands of identical hockey-masked terrorists with cleavers have taken over the city?Uh-huh...Hey, I can play along and immerse myself in the worlds of Halo and Half-life no problem. It just seems like if the game environment is supposed to be somewhat like the real world, then the game should be somewhat believeable.

Hey, if you've played every shooter on the Xbox and you're just looking for another quick and cheap adventure, by all means play Urban Chaos. But if you're already looking toward or playing Xbox 360 titles, this one just doesn't capture the imagination like some bigger titles.

Not bad, just okay.A better, recent shooter in the same price range I'd recommend is Rogue Trooper.

World in Conflict Collectors Edition Review

World in Conflict Collectors Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, as I am reviewing the Collector's Edition of the game I would like to illustrate how the extra goodies weigh in comparison to what we usually expect from a limited or collector edition of a game.

Unlike most so-called collector's editions which contain merely a second disk with throwaway content that most of the time isn't worth watching, or a few extra maps or units, this collector's edition is among the very few such as Bioshock which include substantial additions to your purchase.

This is a two-part box, with a clothe-style coating and the name of the game written in Russian on the Soviet-flag section, and written in English on the American flag bottom.Inside is a History Channel DVD covering the Berlin Wall, a DVD including making of featurettes and trailers, a disk including a buddy key for a 14 day MP trial you can give to a friend, and a small chunk of what remains of the Berlin Wall, complete with certificate of authenticity written in German.

In all - worth the $10.00 extra you will spend, though the box won't fit on your shelf the same as your normal games.

Gameplay, especially multi-play, is addictive. The single player campaign has a solid story, though it feels a bit short.Like Clancy's Red Storm Rising, the Soviet Union on the verge of collapse takes a gambit to save itself from dissolution in a power grab for resources.First invading Europe, and then sneak-attacking the United States, the Soviets kick off World War III in record time - and it couldn't be more beautiful.Visuals in the game are excellent, as screenshots of mushroom clouds and daisy cutters can attest. If you have the rig to handle it, you can view real-time reflections in the water, shadows from clouds being rendered, and great use of lighting all around. The sound follows the same quality - and close-in visuals and sounds remind me of Company of Heroes, which is a good thing, though this game isn't quite as detailed close-up.Which brings me to my next point - this isn't a close up game. You have free reign of the map with your camera, so you can view anything which your team can see from anywhere, and give orders based on what you see on the ground.

Multiplayer matches are the heart of this game, 8 vs 8, and can run from 5 to 15 minutes, are fast-paced, and when the match ends the next match isn't long in coming. This keeps you occupied for hours as there is always one more strategy I want to try to see if I can turn a battle differently, or counteract the enemy in a different way. When my team took heavy losses from a mainly Air team who swooped across the map, I enjoyed building kill-groups of AA units the next game and stashing them across the map, negating the other team's free reign of the map and watching their helicopters crashing everywhere.

In closing, absent Starcraft 2 being release this year, I believe this is the RTS game of the year and definitely worth the purchase.I could go on for a lot longer about the game, but then that would delay your purchase while reading my review.Go get it!

Return to Castle Wolfenstein Review

Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Average Reviews:

(...)
In any case, I can comment (objectively) on the game because I have played it and I can say without a doubt that it's worth buying. Some of us can remember back to the Wolfenstein 3D which later led to Doom which revolutionized the shareware concept and finally brought the PC to a viable gaming platform.Of course, some of us can remember all the way back to the original Castle Wolfenstein of the Apple IIc days, but lets not go there...
Anyways, gamers have waited long and hard for the chance to battle nazis once again and this game delivers.Castles are rendered in very nice detail on my Geforce, it almost starts to smell cold and musty in here (maybe that's me).The cutscenes are also well done and provide a nice prologue to each mission. The game's intro you'll probably only watch once or twice but it's one of the coolest ever! The music is very atmospheric and spooky, reminiscent of Quake.Whoever said the game crashes all the time must have a bad system or be using XP.Anyone who has "downgraded" to XP should've realized that nothing's gonna run on XP for a year (you think people would've learned after Windows 95.)In any case, I run the game on my non-XP system without problems.
Who cares about all that, right? It's the gameplay you want to hear about.Again, this game delivers. You start off as expected battling those evil nazi's as you escape Wolfenstein. From there the game gets progressively creepier as you dive deep into the catacombs and discover both you and the nazis are fighting off terrors even more disturbing.(...)Without spoiling too much, you find out the dead start coming to life and lemme tell ya, these buggers are tough to beat.Ammo starts becoming a serious issue. Not to mention some of the demons have shields that reflect the bullets back at you.Once you meet the fire demon - that alone is worth the price of admission.
Many of the zombies are just thick-skinned clods that are tough to kill, but don't think the enemies have bad AI.One of the head nazi's, Helga, is protected by an elite corp of women who can dodge, roll and even double team against you.Toss a grenade at em?They'll just kick it back at you (and they'll usually wait until just before it's ready to blow up too.)Very quick and very tough. Not to mention, the first time I snuck up behind one of Helga's elite guards, I had to stop and admire the "artwork".
Last but not least, the game borrows a page from the success of No One Lives Forever (another great game) by allowing the player to sneak up on the enemy and listen to their conversations. It's also interesting to run into the occasions the nazis are too busy battling demons to worry about attacking you. This is probably the first game that has made me jump since Doom came out.The surprise factor is used a little excessively in my opinion, but you'll definitely get a few scares.
Multiplayer is quick and responsive on a cable modem.I, of course, get pounded on mercilessly by the thousands of kids who are much better than I.The new interesting addition is the formation of team assaults where each member has a special ability (Lieutenants can call in airstrikes, medics can heal players, engineers can set dynamite, etc...).I find this difficult when joining existing games where I don't know any of the other members, but I figure people will soon be forming clans, similar to Mechwarrior, to exploit the advantages team based assaults can provide. No idea yet on invincibility hacks or other cheats, I get beat so bad it seems like they're all invincible to me.
So there you go.I was worried the emphasis would be on multiplayer and the single player game would be lacking, but that is not the case.If you are into multiplayer battles, then you probably already have a copy of this game by now.
Hope the review helped!

CAPCOM ARCADE HITS 2: 1942/43 MIDWAY
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Once again, Hanaho HIVE Technology is being used for emulation of the games, though the sound emulation (music tracks) of 1943 is a bit off. Some early copies of the game that popped up in stores had a controller bug in it where the controller would no longer function correctly after playing the game for the first time. This was corrected by Hanaho at a later date and patches were posted to the SelectSoft website.

Overall, this package seems nice for the price, but considering Gametap is out there with lots more games to choose from it makes this game seem expensive.....

Commandos 2: Men of Courage Review

First of all, if you played the first two Commandos and loved them then you will absolutley love this game and buy it now. Everything that you wished you could do (because you'd be able to in real life) in Commandos has now come true...EVERYTHING!You can climb walls or poles, traverse wires, climb in/out of windows, look in/out of windwows, snipe in/out of windows, snipe from climbing up a pole, everyone can wear at least a low ranking enemy soldiers uniform, everyone can use rifles & machine guns, everyone can carry bodies, and everyone can knock a person out, everyone except Lupan (Thief) can tie people up, everyone can drive non-specialized vehicles such as trucks and cars...and so much more! Vehicles actually have realistic physics now too! It is so realistic in how you can go about things too...it is so open ended.
Every mission is greatly different from the previous and there are no reused "stock" buildings. You can go inside all buildings and pan the camera 360 degress for a better view. The animation on the guys is completely lifelike...you gotta see it to believe it.The missions are completely replayable too...not like the first Commandos where there was pretty much only one way to go about things like a puzzle piece...do things in any order you want...it's completely up to you how you go about each and every mission...steal a tank or car and do whatever....it is completely awesome!Play it on hard or very hard and you'll be there for at least 6 or 7 hours per mission and they are HUGE!It is great to have such deep gameplay and it NEVER gets BORING.
Oh and the control takes getting use to, but let me tell you this.If you played th originals you know it uses a lot of keyboard shortcuts.Take the time to learn them well and you will be rewarded...it takes a few hours to learn them all of steady playing, but once you do the interface is really just for show so you can see what objects you have.Put in the time and you will never look back....TRUST ME. I have to get back to playing now...peace out...BUY IT, you won't regret it.

This game will run great on any version above accept Windows 7 . In Windows 7 .. you get a Buffer overload error in Windows Visual Basic .
As of this writing and after countless searching on many forums for a solution ...this error still persists and has not had a soltion posted.
On Windows 7 Operating System even on capability mode changes wont resolve this either .

So You can try , but many have exausted the search for the elusive remody concerning Call Of Duty and how to get it to play on Windows 7 .

Medal of Honor Collection Review

Medal of Honor Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The classic war games of this vein (MOH) are updated for your enjoyment on the PS2!It's a shooting game for those who like historical accuracy (with some artstic license, of course) mixed in with some pretty intense gameplay.

In the Medal of Honor Collection, you have 3 games to play: Medal of Honor: Frontline, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, and Medal of Honor: European Assault. The first of the 3 games deals with the major battles of WWII, including the water landing at Normandy in June, 1944. The second game is strictly set in the Pacific Theatre, and opens with your character attempting to escape a damaged destroyer before it is sunk by Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, in December, 1941. The final game in the collection is made with a whole new MOH format, which includes an adrenaline feature so you can go nuts on the enemy without taking damage, floating ammo/heath kit icons (instead of the standard items-on-the-ground format from the previous games.

MOH Frontline is my favorite game so far.The D-Day assault mission is VERY intense. It remainds me of the scene from Saving Private Ryan! There is a recoil on the weapons when firing, and also when a bomb drops, the entire screen shakes. It makes it very difficult to get a good accuracy rating.

MOH Rising Sun is a great game!I have never played a shooter so throughly steeped in the Pacific Theatre as is this MOH title.

MOH European Assault is a good game too, yet I haven't played that one trough very far yet!

One element that successfully ties all 3 games together is, your character actually works cooperatively with other computer controlled allies that help you during the missions. This is especially true in MOH Risisng Sun, and MOH European Assault.A great series of games awaits you in this Collection!

I'm a huge fan of Paradox Interactive. These guys make the perfect games for history geeks like me. Gloriously complex, very playable, with the smack of verisimilitude. Hours of pleasure..

I started war-gaming twenty-five years ago, when I was just a kid in grade school- the Old Avalon Hill era. Hexagon boards, dice, fat rulebooks and hundreds of cardboard unit chits. And far too few fellow geeks to play with. A.H. put out a strategic level European/Mediterranean theatre game called Third Reich. I loved that game. I played WWII out with my little brother, or by playing all factions myself, hundreds of times. Ah, the good old days..

But wait, no. The sepia tones fade to a harsh, merciless grey. I've played HoI2, and this new hyper charged "Doomsday" revision of that glorious game. And there is no comparison. This is Third Reich beatified and transfigured. To heck with the old days.

With HoI2 you can begin campaign play in 1936, 1938, 1939, 1941, or 1944. The diplomatic and military situation being as it was historically at each date. You can play any country in the world - any major power (Germany, U.K., U.S.A., U.S.S.R., France, Italy, Japan) or a lesser power such as Australia, S. Africa, Canada, Brazil, Turkey or Spain, etc. Or you can even play a minor country like Bhutan or Costa Rica - even though they have very little economic, scientific, diplomatic, political, or as a result, military power. Still, if you want to attempt world conquest with say Nicaragua, Switzerland, Tibet or Siam, you are free to.

There are also minor scenarios where you can play out Barbarossa, the Invasion of Poland, Japan in China, the Spanish Civil War, a hypothetical war between Argentina & Brazil, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Ardennes offensive (Battle of the Bulge).. you get the idea. I'm solely a 1936 campaign game man, myself, though, so I can't speak to the quality of the scenarios.

In the original HoI2 campaigns all end in 1947. Which often cuts the game short while things are still very interesting (Hitler played a very stupid HoI2 game- I mean, taking on the U.S.S.R. and U.S.A. simultaneously? While the U.K. is still kicking? Don't you be so stupid. Things could've gone on so much longer.. 988 years longer, vielleicht?) So 1947 is too early an end date.

This new Doomsday expansion corrects that. The new end date is 1953 (the year of Stalin's death.) And a new "Doomsday" scenario is added, beginning in 1945 with Germany defeated.Europe is divided between the Comitern and Allies, and they're at war. Dr. Strangeglove is in the house, ya'll. Yeeehaw!

Armageddon aside, the glory of HoI2 Doomsday is that you can start in 1936, and play through 1953, and absolutely anything can happen. Early Cold War, or Axis world domination, whatever. I mean, you can do all sorts of interesting things (especially if you use the F12 cheatcode "freedom" to change the political conditions of your country more quickly than would otherwise be allowed - Germany can be made communist, the U.S. fascist or communist, the U.S.S.R. a democracy - and all international alliances and national leaders will change..)

The economic and technological aspects of this game are very good- the tech tree is pretty complex, and every country- even the little ones - has a bevy of historic industrial firms and technicians (e.g., Germany has I.G. Farben, Krupp, Siemens, Junkers, Porsche, Rheinmetal, Mauser and individuals such as Guderian, Udet, Goering, Von Braun, Heisenburg, Von Manstein, Raeder, etc. the U.S. has Ford, Raytheon, Oppenheimer, McDonnell Douglas, Nimitz, etc.) who are assigned different tech/doctrinal projects. You can choose to pursue certain lines of technology, and military doctrine and ignore others, try to research them earlier than they were historically, etc.

Economically, each country has an factory industrial base which determines how many units you can produce or support, and which must be fed resources. Resources are obtained by controlling their geographic sources, or through trade with countries who have surplus resources.

Militarily, this is a division level game. The units are assigned historical names and designations (1st Panzer Division, 101st Airborne, K.M.S. Bismarck, U.S.S. Lexington, etc.) You organize them into corps and armies, and fleets. Every unit has a historical commander whom you can reassign and promote, with his own unique skills (Patton, Rommel, Monty, Yamamoto- the whole gang's here.)

Politically and diplomatically you can pick your governmental cabinet. If you dislike your head of state, you can gradually over time manipulate the political & economic climate of your society so that he is replaced. (or you can use the cheat code I mentioned to do it instantaneously.) The U.S., for example, has its historic elections, and F.D.R. can be defeated.. how about a Landon or Wilkie administration?

The axes of your political and economic culture that you can manipulate over time are these: Right/Left, Democratic/Authoritarian, Open/Closed Society, Free Market/Centrally Planned Economy, Standing/Drafted Army, Hawk/Dove, Interventionist/Isolationist. All choices here effect your game play.

One other major change in Doomsday from the original is that they've added an espionage tab to your menu.. you send spies to check out your enemies and neighbors, and get partial and less than fully accurate information instead of HoI2's omniscient all army/navy/air force comparison charts. More realistic, methinks. You also get an idea of what they are researching, which is a nice improvement. Your spies can attempt other missions (assassinate leaders, sabotage projects, foment partisan revolt, etc.) Overall, an improvement, I think.

The A1 is solid, and will usually throw up a challenge. The program is pretty stable, and Paradox is very good about patches and support. Check out Paradox's web forum [..]

In sum: the game is a excellent one. If you play a major power, and stick to the historical script, the war will quite often fall out more or less as things actually did. But what's the fun of that? You could, instead, say, skip Pearl Harbor and take and send the Japanese Imperial Army into Russia instead of China. Or, you could play the U.S. and realize her manifest destiny by conquering all the Americas.. Or you could truly challenge yourself and attempt wide conquest with a middling power such as Turkey, Spain, Nationalist China, Brazil, or Canada.. or try to prosper with even a much smaller power such as Ireland, or a Latin American country like Guatemala. Be creative.

Five plus stars. Buy this game if it sounds at all interesting to you.

Product Description:
Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday is an intriguing real-time strategy game for the PC that begs some interesting "what if" questions related to World War II. Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday includes all the campaigns from the original Hearts of Iron II that take place in 1936, 1939, 1941, and 1944, as well as a new mission that continues the battle in 1953. The world of Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday is both familiar and strange, with events that often come to drastically different conclusions than they did historically.

Events often come to drastically different conclusions than they did historically. View larger.

This game is reminiscent of the classic WWII board game, Axis and Allies. View larger. This version of Hearts of Iron II also includes updates and expansions requested by gamers, with technology, units, and abilities being added for each side to make for a balanced gameplay. What is also intriguing is the ability to resolve the entire conflict through diplomatic means rather than by force -- a trait that sets this game apart from most WWII strategy games. Players can trade weapons and secrets with allies to strengthen themselves as well as their alliances.
This game is reminiscent of the classic WWII board game, Axis and Allies, but has the additional advantages of the computer platform -- more complexity, and real-time gameplay -- that keeps the action non-stop. One particularly unique aspect of Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday is your ability to play from more than just the traditional "big boys", such as the US, UK, Russia, Italy, Japan and Germany; in fact, you can play as any one of 175 countries. You also have the option of which year to start and what specific missions to try, which is especially important as the only way out, other than by winning, is by surrendering.
It's also important to choose which technological path to take, rather than simply assigning certain strengths based on your choice of side or nation. Technology is broken down into different categories, such as Air Doctrine, Land Doctrine, Armor and Naval units, as well as the classic and sometimes all-important Secret Weapon programs. In order to make technological progress, you'll need to assign teams to work on specific projects, many of them based on real historical programs. Each team has different sets of skills that allow them to work on different projects, while each project focuses on a different field. The expanded technological tree in Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday even allows you to develop nuclear weapons. Another important factor in this game is diplomacy, in which your choice of allies can say as much about you as who your foes are. The all new diplomatic options and intelligence system lets you steal and sabotage equipment, control mass media, start riots, and even assassinate ministers and leaders.

This is a turn based game that is fun to play though a little lack luster in graphics. Lots of mods are out there online to improve the appearance. John Tiller has some of the best wargames out there if you like detailed, historical, turn based games. This is not as polished as the East Front/West Front game series. However, still lots of fun for anywhere from about an hour to many hours. If you are into RTS games this is not for you.

MATRIX Uncommon Valor: Campaign for the South Pacific Review

MATRIX Uncommon Valor: Campaign for the South Pacific

I got this as Christmas present. I like cardboard counters/mapboard wargames, and this game is a computer version of a mapboard wargame, similar in concept to Panzer General series.
It features south pacific area (from Rabaul to Noumea, including east Australia bases), with allied coastwatchers and beaches (that can be owned by the players). You can assemble/dissassemble TFs, assign new commanders to TFs, command every historical plane squadron in different types of missions (naval search, recon of specific objective, ground or naval attack, training...) and also command battalions of ground forces and base units to attack the enemy (or improve your facilities).
Ships can be ordered different kind of missions, like combat surface, naval bombardment of bases, mining missions...and, even though you can leave the TF commander free (the computer IA) to choose when to sail for the base to resupply for fuel or supplies...each base keeps track of the supplies and fuel, as well as of each units' experience, fatigue and morale.
The worst of the game is the graphics and sound, graphics are just "enough" good, and sounds are really bad. Also, another point against the game is that, with the option "combat animation" set on, each turn is really slow, and well, the combat animations themselves are just a few "flashes" to indicate gun firing, and a few graphics for ships' fires, or flak...they're something you might want to look at the first time, then set them off for faster play.
My advice : if you like&enjoy mapboard wargames (like Flat Top) you'll like this one, or if you like games like Panzer General (turn based strategy games)you might as well like this one, even though its slower game pace related to Panzer General 2 or 3D. Otherwise, if you're looking for something like command and conquer, look elsewhere, this one's not for you. I rated it 4 stars because i love mapboard wargames and this one is much similar, otherwise, compared to other games (like Total War Medieval, or similar), it would rate much less...
