WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role Review

WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When WWF Smackdown! made it's groundbreaking debut, it amazed some, and others didn't like it.It's obvious pros were graphics and the surprising new match of Special Referee, which is used as getting back at those who stabbed you in the back, or vice versa. There were some cons such as no commentary, and not that much choice in Create-A-Wrestler. It probably wont make any difference to those when it's sequel, WWF Smackdown! 2:Know Your Role hits shelves across the country (supposed release is Tuesday the 21st). Smackdown 2 will have about twice as many wrestlers as there were in the origional (that's about 60 wrestlers), plus a much more updated Create-A-Wrestler feature. Some of the new matches in Smackdown! 2 are the Ladder Match, Table Match, ---- in a Cell, and (the match that has to be unlocked first) the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match. In addition to some of what you're expecting, you'll get a Create-A-Manager mode, where you pick between Chyna, Steven Richards and others to walk to the ring with you and cause disturbance. You also get a Create-A-Taunt mode, where you go frame-by-frame moving certain body parts certain ways, so you can do the Y-M-C-A, or give the crowd the finger while doing a russian dance. Finally, there are double-moves you can execute, an interactive announcer's table you can slam an opponent's head into and break it by doing some strong moves. There is way too much more to talk about, and not enough room to write about. So I'll go out saying I hope you liked my quick summary of the game, and I also hope you enjoy the game.

Product Description:
SmackDown! 2 is the best wrestling game for the PlayStation, period. In both its graphics and gameplay, it's very similar to the firstSmackDown!, except that players will find a mother lode of options forspicing up their wrestling lives.
Besides season mode, players can fight in ladder, table, and chair matches.Their battles can spill over into back areas, in which furniture and eventraffic abound. Wrestlers can even drive a forklift over their opponents forparticularly painful results. All of the ring entrances are there in finedetail. Players also can create their own wrestler with hair, weight, andaccessory options that rival those of any wrestling game out there.
Still missing is the color commentary; also, the move set for each wrestler iskind of limited. Overall, players can expect a fun experience that, while notperfect, is certainly the top wrestling title for the system. --RobbGuido
Pros:

    Stellar graphics and user-friendly controls
    Countless options
Cons:

    Still no color commentary

WWF: No Mercy Review

WWF: No Mercy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is a great game for the N64 videogame console. It has a lot of modes such as Ladder Matches(Single Player and Tag Team), Survival Mode where you battle against 100 opponents in an effort to go 100-0, A Steel Cage Match and the Main Mode for the Single Player. The career mode allows you to choose wrestling for 7 titles including World, European, Hardcore, Womens and more. Angles play out with-in the mode depending on whom you choose to align with or go against, attacks can be set up against you in backstage areas or interferences can help you if aligned with somebody. The Smackdown Mall is another extensive feature as it allows you to gain points upon completion of matches and Title victories and lets you access hidden wrestlers, extra costumes and more. A slight word of caution though, when having 4 wrestlers on screen the game can slow down a little bit due to the amount of activity happening at worse. It's bearable but it may turn some gamers off. Another word of caution is that the game tends to lose information unless it's saved. Therefore, any Created Wrestlers or Championship Mode games may be erased if not saved after every match or every creation. This may just be a glitch in the game or it could be an error looked over by Asmik but it's a precaution. However, not all games have this glitch so it's unknown if the games will be called back(Like Perfect Dark) and the bug will be fixed.

Product Description:
WWF No Mercy picks up exactly where Wrestlemania 2000 leftoff--it uses the same wrestling engine as its predecessor, only with morewrestlers, more match types, and other additions that will make hard-corewrestling fans devilishly happy.
For starters, there are 65-plus wrestlers, including old- and new-schoolers,tossed onto carefully copied sets like Wrestlemania and SmackDown. There arealso new backstage areas, like the sharply detailed bar, which incorporates apool table for optimal slammage.
New matches, such as the ladder match and guest-referee match, offer numerouspossibilities, like using the ladder as a springboard, or ignoring pins whentaking control of the official. Weapons also abound, and now these items can behurled around, even from the floor to the ring, where they're likely to hit aclueless opponent. A story mode adds tremendous replay value to this one, givingplayers the option of turning good or bad, with a variety of consequences thatare based on that decision.
As stated, the game plays just like Wrestlemania 2000--meaning the samedegree of slowdown and questionable artificial intelligence. The slowdownparticularly hampers the game when many wrestlers take the ring at once; itseems that this title pushes the Nintendo 64 to the limit, as far as on-screenaction goes.
But the game's good points more than outweigh its bad, and, all told, NoMercy will satisfy wrestling fans who are looking for a taste of theirfavorite male melodrama. --Robb Guido
Pros:

Overwhelming number of wrestlers, complete with special moves
Excellent novelty matches, and plenty of weapons for clobbering opponents
Cons:

Big-time slowdown when the action starts to heat up in the ring

WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007 Review

WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007
Average Reviews:

This game is great but not awesome, here's why:

Cons:
no announce table(PS2 and Xbox 360 have announce table),
little crowd(PS2 and Xbox 360 have full crowd),
characters look very un-detailed(PS2 and Xbox 360 look like real people).

Pros:
good gameplay,
easy to play,
kinda fun(until you lose),
loading time isn't that slow like 2006,
and fun,

This game is great but hopefully 2008 will have a full crowd, announce table, and better looking people.

WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 Review

WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even though a lot of 2008 is recycled from last year's versionWWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007, most WWE fans will enjoy the ride.

The Good:

Great Visuals:Detailed entrance themes and realistic wrestling moves and finishers.

Storylines:The 24/7 Mode, which is a career mode offers many entertaining storylines and surprises.I won't spoil it by listing all of them here, but in Smackdown Career, you can participate in a Fatal 4-Way Ladder Match to see who gets a case with movie contract.

Great Variety of Matches:Most Match Types are here from last year, but also a lot of ECW-style matches are added, like ECW RUles Hardcore Match where you can use new variety of objects, such as kendo sticks and flaming tables.

Replay Value:Along with a lenghty 24/7 Careeer Mode, you can always come back and do it all over again as a wrestler from another brand to experience different storylines. There is also a Legends Mode, which reminds me of Madden 08's Superstar Mode, where you have to relive some of WWE's greatest moments and do them on your own:Use Stone Cold to defeat Bret Hart and even enter Royal Rumble as Shawn Michaels with #1 entry and try to win the whole thing on the hardest setting.

Skill Improvement:Unlike last year where you only play week-to-week, in here you make moves every day.You can spend your days off just chillin, getting rest, or you can use them to improve your skills or try to make money, shoot a movie or compete in a training excerise. However, too many physical activities may land you an injury and fatigue.

Roster:A huge roster filled with most of today's superstars and even some that are no loger in WWE: Cryme Tyme and even TNA's Booker T is in the line-up as well.Hall of Fame unlockables are:Breat Hart, Anvil Neidhart, Rick Rude, Mick Foley, The Rock and many more.Oh and of course, ECW wrestlers join in as well.
The Bad:

Audio:While some voices are realistic, some voice-acting have been performed by generic-voiced actors.I swear that both JBL and Joey Styles are both voiced by the same voice-over.Many wrestlers don't sound like themselves at all!

Load Times:I have played this on my new Slim PSP and while the loading times seem to improve over when I played 2007 version on the classic PSP, the loading times still feel a bit annoying when you want to experience a fast-paced action.

Unrealism:Some wrestlers act out of their kayfabe wrestling character.I have played 24/7 Mode with Kane and during some storylines he would walk around backstage, shaking hands, smiling and telling jokes, which does seem to be out of the Kane character. They should've made a separate storylines for "Monster/Heel" characters that rarely talk.Bottom Line:If you are a wrestling fan, it will be hard to dodge this title. However, even if you are not a wrestling fan, this will still be worth a look if you like fighting games.

The Punisher Review

The Punisher
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's been a long wait, but it's finally here."The Punisher" is now available for the PS2 (there are also X-Box and PC versions available), and I can honestly say that they have finally come out with a superb vision of the dark and brutal world of this cold-blooded antihero. It's violent. It's disturbing. It's unsettling. It's intense.

As it should be.

You're Frank Castle, a.k.a. "The Punisher."You have cemented yourself in a life of violence as you plead to punish the guilty since the judicial system does not.The story in the game is that you have been picked up by the police and they are now questioning you about a number of "assaults" carried out by you.You relive those flashbacks and gun down criminals left and right while trying to find out who is the mastermind behind the sudden crime wave (not to mention the number of attempts on your life).Your gut says it's Kingpin, but evidence points elsewhere. It's up to you to find out and learn why you're locked up in Ryker's Island to begin with.

The game has a pretty simple formula to it and once you've done it all... you've done it all.And yet, the game is so entertaining and engaging that the replay level is extremely high. The graphics are crisp and clear, the music is haunting and fits in with the mood, and the unfolding storyline guarantees you wanting to complete the game. There are a variety of weapons for you to choose from and different methods for taking out criminals. You can perform quick kills, use them as shields to protect yourself from gunfire, and the best feature of all, interrogate the guilty. You're going to need help along the way, so getting some answers from the criminal scum is a must. There's simple interrogations (gun tension, choke, face smash and punch), and there are also "special interrogations" on each level and section (can you say "buzz saw," "shark" and "electric chair?").You can also perform "special quick kills" that differ from level to level. Not to mention the intense "slaughter mode" where you assault your enemies with an unlimited amount of knives.

A nice bonus is that the voice of "The Punisher" is none other than Tom Jane, who was the star of the most recent "Punisher" flick. To some, this may not be a big deal, but to fans like me, it is MAJOR.An excellent decision, I must say.He really adds the tone and mood of Frank Castle splendidly.

Some of the drawbacks are that the controls take a little getting used to and the number of enemies on certain sections can be overwhelming. Also, some of the "special interrogations" can be tricky and if you're not careful, you may prematurely kill the only person who can help you out (I suggest using the "special interrogations" on enemies that don't have the white skulls above them, so that way the only penalty you'll get for prematurely wasting them is some lost points).Like I said, once you've done everything, you've pretty much have done EVERYTHING.However, I have to say the replay level is extremely high. You'll want to replay certain levels over and over again.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with "The Punisher" videogame for PS2."The Punisher" is one of my favorite comic book characters, and this game does a fine representation of it.If you're a fan, definitely check it out as soon as you can.

Remember, it's not vengeance... it's punishment.

Titan Quest Immortal Throne Expansion Pack Review

Titan Quest Immortal Throne Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a huge fan of Titan Quest and THQ, the company that makes it.I love the expansion, and I say that having not even played in the new location yet! They added to the game so many cool new features. This game already had huge replayability, and now it is even more so.Awesome enhancements include:

- New "Dream" specialty - it's great, I'm using it
- More inventory space...you can now collect sets of items and suit up for different battles
- You can share items between your characters - this adds HUGELY to replayability, as when adventuring as one character, you can pick up an item that your other character can use
- My character now leaves footprints in the snow.Fricking footprints.
- Drops are now way better, much easier to get the specialty items
- You can separate relics from items (it can be expensive though, as it should be)
- You now find "formulae", which is a formula to make a charm that goes in a new inventory slot. You have to find all the ingredients and then pay money to get it made.
- They added commas to your gold total, so you can read it now
- They added a pop up clock so you can see what time it is

I mention those last two enhancements because they show the company really listens and takes the time to put in the little touches. That and I've surprised myself how often I use the clock.

I realize this review sounds like I work for the company.I am just a big fan.I'm sorry to hear the other reviewer had problems with it crashing.I have played the expansion probably 7-10 hours so far, and have only frozen once...the expansion is brand new, though, I'm sure they'll iron out the kinks in an update.I have a Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs ram, and an ATI 1900XTX, and I play at 1280x1024 with everything maxed.

I hope THQ keeps making updates and new releases of this game!

Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Review

Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Super Return of the Jedi is an action-platformer that continues the quality of fun set by the last two games. It follows the movie's storyline pretty well, with nicely detailed renderings of familiar locations, five playable characters, and John Williams' memorable score. As a movie-to-game translation, it's definitely one of the strongest of the 16-bit era.

Special mention must be made of the Mode-7 pseudo-3D stages. With the limited technology available to programmers at the time, they were quite inventive in pulling off the Speeder Bike chase, Millennium Falcon battles, and the final run into the Death Star. There's a nice handful of these levels scattered throughout the game, which mixes things up a bit between the regular 2D stages.

So is the game hard? Overall no, but it's a decent challenge depending on the difficulty level. The final 'escape from the Death Star' level does prove to be quite tricky though, and there are better characters to use in some levels over others.

A must-have for all Star Wars fans. None of the 2D attempts on the Game Boy Advance have come close to the quality of these games.

Drawn to Life Review

Drawn to Life

What you draw simply fills in templates already in the world. You don't draw enough to really set the flavor of the setting, and all the drawing is simply filling in blanks in the background.

It's fun to draw your hero, and the drawing app is great (I sometimes put in the game just to doodle), but the gameplay itself is a disappointingly linear jump and smash, and your works of art do nothing to affect the game world.

Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II Review

Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since it is the number one consideration I make in choosing if I'm going to buy a game, I have to talk about the copy protection.Yes it's not the game, but it is a part of the overall product. If you can't play the game, then it's of no use to you.Dawn of War 2 is more intrusive than the CD keys of the old days. Those keys were perfectly reasonable and fair, but nowadays I can't understand why companies punish their paying customers with annoying activations.I purchased Max Payne 2 and the protection couldn't recognize my CD drive so I couldn't use it; their response was tough luck.I have almost entirely stopped buying PC games because the protection adds risk.

That said, the protection scheme that Relic went with is at least not as bad as it could be.You have to install Steam by Valve software and there is a CD Key too, but as far as I can tell Steam isn't evil and it doesn't do anything to screw with your system. You do need to have an Internet connection the first time you install the game, but after that you can put everything in offline mode and not connect. While this isn't as bad as it could have been, if you're a US Army trooper stationed in a country without access to the Internet to validate your copy or if you just don't have a connection, you're out of luck. You also have to have a Games For Windows Live account, but you can create an offline one. When playing single player it's slightly annoying to be asked/reminded multiple times if you want to be in online mode.

So, on to the game. The first thing you'll notice is that this is NOT Dawn of War.The first game was kind of like StarCraft or most RTS games where you build a base, then units, then fight it out.At least in single player, Dawn of War 2 is more like those StarCraft levels where you had a small group of soldiers and your goal was to reach the other side of the map.Whether you like this change or not, well that's a matter of taste.I kind of like not worrying about the base development. At the same time, it does make the game a little less interesting because you lose that base defense and resource management aspect.

The characters are great. You get a little bit of RPG angle to things because you can customize the armor, weapon, and special bonus that each squad gets. This isn't all that deep, sort of like X-Men Legends 2 character tweaking. There is an interesting touch where you can gain certain bonus skills if you reach milestones adding points in certain areas. For example, if you add points to the scout's "will" (mana) attribute you can get a skill to not drain energy if concealed while standing still. You get the idea.I liked it since you get to choose whether to round out your squad or take a risk and get some benefits for focusing in on one or two areas.

Dreadnoughts are back and just as fun as ever. They'll still pick up the bad guy sometimes and toss them around the map.Plus, they don't need cover; they ARE cover. In single player, he's about useless until you get the "self repair" ability.Unlike your normal characters, he won't heal over time.Once you get that ability, he'll can fix himself and becomes a major player. You can revive fallen comrades if you have at least one guy left, but I couldn't ever get him to revive anybody so it's probably a limit to balance the abilities of this unit type.

Controls are tight and the characters will generally do what you want them to.I occasionally had problems selecting all units at once, though.Graphics look good.Sounds fit the game nicely and the voice acting is quite good. You've got a good story and entertaining Multiplayer.Overall though, to me it just didn't meet what I was expecting.I do enjoy it, but I'd have rather had more of an enhanced version of the previous game with some levels like this thrown in.As with the first game, you only get Space Marines campaigns.Too bad.I probably won't stick around too long after I finish the single player campaign, but I'll have fun until then.

This package is perfect because you can import your DOW2 campaign into CR and start off with your earned skills and some of your equipment.DOW2 and CR differ signifigantly in their mechanics.DOW2 is easier; you have a lot more chance to play random missions to level up or for goodies and supplies boost everybody's special equipment.Chaos has fewer random missions and throws in tasks that leave you more pure or more tainted by Chaos. It's an interesting idea, but does make things annoying at times when you have to use a specific character or replay a mission just to avoid corruption.Supplies are type specific so you get fewer uses. Both games are fun.

Check the system requirements well before you buy it.It requires significantly more power than Dawn of War did.You also need a decent video card.My system beats the suggested specs, I have an Athlon 5600+ CPU, 3 GB of RAM, and a GeForce 8400 GS video card and it's a little jerky at times. The game has a cool feature that rates your setup and can automatically configure for best performance. My card apparently isn't up to snuff even at the lowest settings, so I can still play but it thinks I'd lag out of online play.Just as well, I have no interest in that.

I did find one trick that can help a little in Vista.Right-click the Steam icon (since Steam has to run to play the game) and choose Properties. Now go to to the Compatibility tab and check to Disable desktop composition. This will shut down the Aero features and should give a little bit of a graphics boost. If you have a nVida card you can go into nVidia Control Panel, view Advanced Settings, manage 3D settings, and change the "Texture filtering - Quality" to "Performance".Do a search online if you need more detailed instructions how to change that setting. Those seem to have helped a bit for my setup.Really though, you need a decent card if you want to play online or if you care about it being super pretty.

SpongeBob's Truth or Square Review

SpongeBob's Truth or Square
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I played through this game with my 3 y/o son and we had a great time.I was VERY impressed with how they handled multi-player (more on that in a minute).

Spongebob Truth or Square is based on a story where Spongebob forgot where he put the Krabby Patty sauce recipe. In order to remember, he needs to get happy. So, his friends help him by remembering happy times (basically, levels based on Spongebob TV episodes. The Hash-Slinging Slasher!!!!).

This is basically a 3D platformer. You go through each level and have to beat up the robot enemies, jump across the gaps, etc...Moving Spongebob is via the nunchuck.A button jumps, B button shoots a water bomb from Spongebob's nose, swinging the remote left/right does a spin attack, and moving the nunchuck up down (in a hammer motion) does a spatula-slam attack. You can also move the camera around via the up/down/left/right on top of the remote, and Z will put the camera behind Spongebob.(It's all easier and more intuitive than it sounds).

There are several boss fights that can be tough for the youngest players.

Now, the multi-player.You can do the game with just Spongebob no problem. However, someone with a second remote (no nunchuck) can hit + and join in as Plankton.Plankton will hover above Spongebob's shoulder and can zap and stun enemies with his ray gun thing. As I said, you don't NEED Plankton, but it does make things easier. The great thing about this mechanic is that I (the adult) can play as Spongebob and do all the more difficult aspects of the game (like jumping across gaps on the jellyfish, fighting six robots at once, etc), while my young son can just zap the bad guys with Plankton.I don't have to worry about him walking off a ledge or whatever. It's very clever. Also, Plankton and Spongebob say some pretty funny things.

One other note:The Plankton remote DOES support the Motion Plus accessory for easier targeting, but it is not required.

I definitely recommend this game.

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War Soulstorm Review

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War Soulstorm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While Soulstorm keeps the key gameplay elements that have kept me playing the DoW series for 4 years after it came out, this game mostly just offers more of the same, without too much that is new.The two new races are pretty cool, but with 9 races now, it almost feels like there is too much in the game, and not enough to distinguish the different races. The Sisters of Battle play to me like a compromise between the Imp. Guard and the Space Marines.I have also encountered a number of graphical glitches and crashes that I never saw in the previous installments of the game, which suggest to me that this game was rushed out a bit.The insane load times mentioned by another reviewer are a bit of a drag. Not a bad game, by any means, but for $40, we deserved more.

Company of Heroes Review

Company of Heroes
Average Reviews:

Company of Heroes Game of the Year is a great game. However, I didn't realize that the first game would be trying to get it to recognize the DVD.After installation I kept getting a disk validation error. If I happened to be online when I started the game, it would try to log on and update and said I needed a 115MB patch. This is not the correct patch!I contacted THQ and got back an Email about turning off anti-virus software and any virtual drives. My anti-virus was off and I don't use virtual drives, so that didn't help, however they were nice and trying to be helpful. Finally, after endless searching and investigating, I found out how to solve the issue on my own.If you happen to end up with the same issue, I think I can save you a lot of grief with the following:
Locate and install the patch en_2101_2102_patch.exe manually (This must be done first. If you just try to install the second patch it will give you an unrecognized version error and exit.)
Locate and install the second patch EN_2102_2103_patch.exe manually.
After this I was finally able to get the game to recognize the disk and run. After that it was smooth sailing.Good luck.
