Real Arcade Pro: EX Premium VLX Review

Real Arcade Pro: EX Premium VLX

If in a joystick you seek affordability and portability then this stick isn't for you.

The Hori Real Arcade Pro VLX is the monument piece of arcade sticks. The front and top half of the Unit is made of metal. The side pieces and design of the stick matches that of an official Japanese Street Fighter IV Vewlix cabinet. The stick also uses a Sanwa JLF joystick and Sanwa OBSF-30 buttons, the highetst quality authentic Japanese arcade parts. The front bevel of the stick is set at a angle for your palms just like the Viewlix arcade cab.The base of this stick is really wide and very heavy.I am one of those people that belive so long as you can carry an arcade stick, It cannot be too heavy. With a lighter stick such as an Hori EX2 playing on the table may cause the stick to move about or slide around. The VLX stays put on my coffee table .

One of the other major draws is that this stick has 3 thumbscrews in the cord compartment that when removed allows you to open the stick like a hot rod car so that you can modify your stick (whilst voiding your warranty). So if you prefer certain Seimitsu arcade parts you can easily swap them out.As for modability and maintenence, the buttons are easily replaceable and the buttons have quick disconnects. The Sanwa JLF can be swapped out for a Seimits LS-32 or LS-56(with MS Plate) if you prefer a different type of joystick.

The only con I could say is the price, and for some it is definitely bigger than it needs to be.For most people a Madcatz TE would be a more practical choice, but if you are one that doesn't wan't a run of the mill product, get the VLX.

Playstation 3 Soul Calibur IV Arcade Stick Review

Playstation 3 Soul Calibur IV Arcade Stick
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own both sticks and each are made as a limited edition for their respective games. Both sticks have a beautifully design faceplate representing each game. Both sticks are made by HORI, a well known maker of peripherals from Japan, and have that HORI quality throughout. The typical 8 way clicking lollipop joystick and the durable convex buttons are featured and is typical of HORI parts. This is where the similarities end.

Availability: The Tekken 5 stick is not in production any longer but you can find many on auction at the typical auction websites.SCIV stick obviously is brand new and features SCIV artwork on the face.

SIZE: The SCIV stick is about 1/2 the size and girth of the Tekken 5 stick.Your hands will not completely rest on SCIV stick as it would on the massive Tekken 5 stick. Also it is important to note that the Tekken 5 stick is similar in size as HORI's arcade pro series sticks.SCIV stick is similar to the smaller namco fighting stick for PS1 and the DEAD OR ALIVE 4 stick for XBOX 360 released with the game both made by HORI.

Compatibility: THIS IS IMPORTANT. IF you read nothing else, make sure you read this part. The Tekken 5 stick is made for PS2.The SCIV stick is made for PS3.
SCIV stick will work on SCIV, Soul Blade (PS1), SCII and SCIII (PS2), TEKKEN 5 DR (PS3), TEKKEN 1,2,3,4 TAG,5 (PS2) and most importantly it features turbo functions and a PS HOME button as well.

The Tekken 5 Stick was originally made for PS2 and WILL NOT work with the PS3 UNLESS you get the right adapter. NOT JUST ANY ADAPTER, the right adapter!!! This goes for any and all HORI sticks made for PS2.What's the right adapter?
Not many are available anymore, but one that works but with a small lag input and no PS home button is the ANTCOMMANDOS guitar hero adapter. Specifically designed for the guitar hero controller but works with the stick.I am an average player at best and even I notice a lag.But for most button mashers and hackers this maybe a good choice for you.And it is the most readily available and least expensive.
The one you want if it ever becomes available again is the REAL ps2 to PS3 adapter from China. It was sold on Amazon by mycarryingcase but has since been unavailable.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00116SUUO

If it comes available again, do not hesitate, get it.It has no lag and features a PS3 home button. It works great with SCIV as well as Tekken 5 DR and all the previous editions of each.It even works with Virtua 5!!!!It is avialable through others sellers but they are expensive and inflated because of the rarity of such an item. And don't even waste your money on the other products---> THEY DO NOT WORK. Period.

So how does it work for Soul Calibur IV?Hands down (no pun intended) better than using a dual shock 3.

The button lay out is similar to the Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 (HRAP3), in which the buttons curve from left to right. However on the SCIV stick the button layout differs in that the top row is L1 [](A) /\(B) R1 and the bottom row is L2 X(G) O(K) R2. Already there is a built in advantage to this configuration versus a controller, because many of the moves require simultaneous button presses and sequences.Example: Darth Vader's Force Grip into Force Hang then Saber Strike, which requires B+G,A+B then A+B. This is so much harder to do on a controller, but you can easily hit this 9/10 times on the SCIV stick. Yes, some of you can probably do this easily on the controller but it takes much less skill to pull off when your fingers are covering all the necessary buttons on the SCIV stick. There are many moves and combos like this with ALL the characters, some are even more complicated.I used darth vader as an example because, well, everyone will try him at least once. I did. I usually play Taki ever since Soul Blade and I used a Hori fighting PS1 back then and have never used anything else but a Hori Branded stick since.
In addition, you can configure the buttons on SCIV any way you want so can actually set it up just like the arcade where the main buttons are closest to the stick.
Despite true stick enthusiatist saying that HORI isnt as good as real arcade parts like Sanwa, that is an unfair comparsion. This stick was not intended for public use and abuse. I look at it this way. HORI parts are not arcade quality, BUT are quality parts. This is NOT Madcatz or Nyko cheap quality at all.The weight, feel, and quality are evident once you unwrap and use this stick. The joystick clicks in every direction and buttons are resposive, the top is steel, and the artwork will not fade from normal use. And for many of you that don't feel like spending over 140.00 on a HRAP3, this will serve you just fine. Just get it already!

TrackMania: Sunrise Review

Excellent game, from the progression through levels to the track editor, the game is near perfect. My only complaint is the third type of vehicle is very undesirable, I've gone on line to race other people's tracks and no one is even using the third type. But the on line driving experience is even better with official rankings and the custom paint shop allows you to easily and endlessly customize your vehicle (Leopard skin my first choice). The speed and control are beyond impressive.Track Mania Sunrise is the perfect racing game with the ability to create the perfect track. The stunts and aerial effects are amazing with awesome camera effects during the jumps.Maybe next year they'll allow contact and collisions with on line racing.I'm not easily impressed and I own a dozen driving games including GT3, WRC, Test Drive, Need for Speed, and Midnight Club.Track Mania tops them all.

Over the years I've played many, many PC flight simulations and this FC2 is the best I've found. It provides the best balance of realism and game play that no other similar games have matched. I love that eight different flyable aircraft are provided, smooooooooth online game play with friends, the amazing flight dynamics of the Su-25 and Su-25T, the best PC flight sim graphics available, and that I can fly online with friends flying DCS Black Shark. Not surprised it got PC Pilots "Platinum" award. This is a winner!

Playstation 3 HORI PAD 3 Turbo Wireless - Silver Review

Playstation 3 HORI PAD 3 Turbo Wireless - Silver
Average Reviews:

So my first impression of this controller was that it feels cheap. The plastic housing just feels light and cheap, not at all like the Sony controller.

This unit also doesn't include bluetooth, so you loose the ability to power on your PS3 like you have on the normal controller.

It works a lot like the PS2 wireless controllers in that you plug in a USB wireless transmitter into the PS3 and play through that.

It does have several nice options. The turbo selector allows 3 different rates of fire, along with the option to have auto fire where you don't even have to press the button. That is a great option for any shooter. There is also a sensitivity adjustment for the analog control sticks.I also really like that it uses AA batteries since I have a good supply of rechargeable batteries.

But my first big issue is that it doesn't appear to work on PS2 or PS1 games.Pretty much any time the PS3 does the soft reset to start those games the controller looses sync.It works just fine with any game that doesn't involve that reset (PS3 games, or anything downloaded from PSN).

So if you just need a turbo controller for PS3 or PSN games, this is about your only choice. But don't expect to use it on any of your older games.Since this does everything but older games and feels cheap, I had to give it 4 stars. It's good, but not perfect.

MasterCook Deluxe 8.0 Review

MasterCook Deluxe 8.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used Master Cook for many years now, and I am very impressed with it's capabilities.I mainly use it for managing and nutritionally analyzing my own recipes, but the recipes that come with the program are also useful, and easy to customize to your own needs. There are many yahoo (and other) groups dedicated to sharing Master Cook recipes in a format that is very easy to download, and the recipe import feature makes it easy to copy and paste recipes in text format (or from websites - including pictures!) in just a few seconds. It can take a while to type in a lot of recipes from books, or initially typing in your collection if you choose to do it all at once, but I think it is worth the effort.I have tried a variety of other recipe software programs (Cook'n, ChefTec - EXPENSIVE, Meal Master, Instant Home Cooking, CookWare, among a few!) and I have found Master Cook to be by far the best value with the most customization abilities, ease of use, and user-friendliness.

Master Cook also has the capability to keep track of your pantry, create shopping lists, plan your menus, search for recipes based on very specific criteria (ingredients to avoid or include, single nutritional items, your personal rating or category, time to make, cost - if you use the shopping section, etc., and combinations of any of these things).

One thing that I don't like about Master Cook are that it *doesn't* include SUGAR or TRANS FATS in the nutritional information (or a custom nutrition capability - that would be handy for calculating weight watchers points!) I contacted ValuSoft about the possibility of adding these and was told that they do *not* expect to add these in the near future.I was disappointed by this because I think that sugar and trans fat are pretty basic items to nutrition - I hope they reconsider!

Overall, I highly recommend this product if you are interested in maintaining and sharing recipes and/or having control over your nutrition.I have enjoyed the ability to modify recipes so that they are healthier for me and my family, and have given this software (and my recipes/cookbooks from it!) to several family members as gifts.

I miss this game so very much, I wish some nice programmer would listen to the Syndicate War fans and make a new one for windows XP or XBOX!! This game had the original Matrix plot line, poor people oppressed by computer-chips implanted in the back of their necks, chips that made them see their ghetto apartments as clean and nice when they were dirty and roach infested! Instead of AI robots oppressing humanity, it was high-tech corporate thugs!

NBA Jam 2004 Review

NBA Jam 2004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you remember and liked the NBA Jam series for Super Nintendo you'll love the PS2 version of this game. This isn't regular basketball, it's 3 on 3 with nothing but slams, ally oops and other trick shots. If you like games such as NFL Blitz or NBA Street you'll love this game.
The graphics are absolutely awesome, players get tired in this game and show it with hands on knees and heavy breathing. You get the option to replace players at halftime, which is a great feature.
There's also a tournament feature where you can pick a team from today and play teams from the past. It starts in the 1950s in black and white and you go through the years up to the present day. It's an absolutely amazing feature, the black and white game play and commentary that sounds like it's from the 50s is very cool.
The only drawback I've found to the game is the AI seems to get an advantage to catch up if you get ahead of it too far in the game. I've picked the Lakers which is the best team in the game and not been able to blow out a mediocre rated team such as the Jazz.

PSP Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron Entertainment Pack - Ceramic White Review

PSP Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron Entertainment Pack - Ceramic White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I have owned the Sony PSP Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron Entertainment Pack - Ceramic White for about 3 weeks now.I never owned the original PSP, and mostly got this for "remote play" capabilities with the PS3 (e.g. remote access to your PS3 using the PSP and a wifi connection).Simply put, the PSP is AWESOME.Seriously.

The Good:

1. Aesthetics/Design/Construction.
The white slim looks and feels great.I briefly owned the black slim before returning it and getting the white one.The black looked slick, but it was a real fingerprint magnet. The white looks better, very sleek and clean.Fingerprints do not show up on it much either, which is great. The silver slim was just too cheap looking, like the silver was spray painted on, so I never considered it.Nice how the back is totally flat also, unlike the old psp.The non-spring door battery cover is fine.I was worried after reading reviews of how it is cheap feeling and fragile, but it's just fine.It is easy to open/close, gives a nice "snap" when it opens or closes, won't break if you're not rough with it (care is required), and eliminates worries about the spring door mechanism from malfunctioning.I never had an original PSP 1000, but the slim feels solid and not cheap at all to me.

2. Screen.
Very bright, nice 480x272 resolution.Movies and games just look great on it.

3. Music.
MP3s (and WMA supported also) sound great on the PSP.The visualization has about six different "patterns" that are interesting. The interface looks good, better in fact than the music player interface on the PS3, and features all the important info, and can be toggled on/off also.Recent firmware now allows for music to be played back while viewing photos.

4. Video.
Ability to run full 480x272 video off of files stored on the memory stick was a contentious issue in the first couple years, as Sony had evidently crippled video file on the memory stick to a max resolution of 320x240 in order to "encourage" users to buy overpriced UMDs.Several months ago, Sony saw the error of its ways and relented to user requests and now the PSP is fully able to play back 480x272 (the PSP's native resolution) video off of videos stored on your memory stick.Using the freeware "psp video 9," you can create video files ranging from 700mb (~1.5hrs video) to 1gb (~2hrs) that look and sound as good as a UMD movie.

Functionality is great too, with the newer firmwares you can search through your video file for scenes by varying intervals (1,2, or 5 minute), which is great since your own video files will be a single file. This is really not to be underestimated in its usefulness, plus it is really cool to use!

5. Photos.
The photo viewer is pretty cool as well, but could use a bit more customization. You can view standard file types (jpg, gif, bmp, and tiff I believe) and have a few slideshow and zoom options. The background of photos that are not 480x272 resolution is white, which cannot be changed to another color (like black), which is not a big deal but I hope Sony will allow you to use a black background in the future.

6. Games.
This is of course the main feature of the PSP.I wasn't expecting the games to be too good, but there are quite a few very good games. So far, my favorites are: Silent Hill Origins, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty/Vice City Stories, NBA 08, Outrun 2006, Burnout Legends, FIFA 08, Madden 08, Legend of Heroes, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, Daxter, Wipeout Pure, and Siphon Filter: Dark Mirror. You would be amazed at the graphics, gameplay, story, audio (music/voiceovers) this little system is capable of!Some of these are just great games.

7. Remote Play/Location Free Player.
This is the original reason I bought the PSP, to remotely (via wifi) connect to my PS3 and access the music, video, photos, and even games on it.When it works, it is just really really cool. The PS3 interface shows up on the PSP screen (which can be adjusted for quality based on the bandwidth you want to set it to -- there are five different settings), and you can play movies, trailers, photos, audio, even some games (like Lair!) on your PSP.I haven't used Location Free player yet, but basically it is like using a Slingbox on the PSP, so that you can watch TV, access your DVR, etc., on your PSP using a wifi connection.I plan to try it someday for sure.

8. Internet.
You can use the browser to surf the internet on the PSP when you have access to wifi.It works well enough, and the key input system is pretty decent for a non-QWERTY/touchscreen input system.

9. Functionality/Performance.
The much maligned battery life, is really not that bad at all.Using the PSP to listen to mp3s, watch videos, play games, I get about 3-4 hours of usage (depending on how much video/games I watch/play), which gets me through average usage easily. For longer trips, I have the 2200mAh (oem) extended battery which works great and will give me roughly 6-8 hours of usage.Incredible.The battery will stick out the back, but you can go to dealextreme-dot-com and buy a bigger battery cover (black or white) for less than four dollars.Sony will evidently release an official extended battery kit with a bigger battery cover in black and silver (no white though, booo!) for about 45 dollars sometime in the next month or so.

During gameplay, I have never had any slowdown of framerate or crashing EVER.Not once on over 14 games that I now own.Great performance.Videos and music also perform flawlessly.Load times are not that bad, and don't bother me much as it is only in the beginning mostly, and so gameplay during games is very quick.

The XMB (cross media bar) user interface is fantastic and so easy to use and rather stylish as well.Love using it.Video out to your TV is a cool feature that I have not yet used.

The Not-so-good:

1. Fingerprint magnet (black PSP).White one has no issues with this.
2. Cannot change background color to black when viewing photos.
3. Wifi is 802.11b only, no 802.11g (faster) support... yet.
4. Remote play is hit or miss regarding connectivity.Still not easy to connect to the PS3.Hopefully, Sony will improve upon this with updates.Remote on/off of the PS3 works well enough though.
5. Soon to be released extended battery kit will not include a white cover. No biggie, just go to dealextreme-dot-com to find a white one from Hong Kong (cheap too).
6. Limited audio/video codec support, including no DIVX/XVID support yet for videos or AAC for audio. But using PSP Video 9 (freeware) to convert videos works just fine to convert videos of most types into viewable 480x272 (or less if you want) mp4 video.
7. UMD spinning noise is a bit loud/harsh on the ears, but luckily it spins rarely and usually at the beginning of the game or rarely during gameplay (e.g. loading new levels, etc.).
8. Volume on audio/video playback from memory stick is TOO QUIET!Setting "dynamic normalization" under "audio" settings helps it get louder, but still it's too soft. The volume from the speakers is okay but I always use headphones so I cannot really judge it.
9. Expensive assessories.Getting a couple extended batteries, a battery charger, a nice protective case, a screen protector, some UMD cases, headphones, wrist strap, a few games, a nice memory stick pro duo (I got the 8gb one -- you won't want less than that), and the price quickly jumps up to almost PS3 range (easily over 500 dollars).
10. Cool accessories only available in Japan, including a camera, GPS, and DMB (mobile television).I don't really miss those though. Bottom Line:

As you can judge from my lengthy review, I love my new white PSP slim.It is so fun, versatile, and cool (remote play will impress your friends and family) that you will not regret plopping down some serious cash to build up your PSP slim system!

Deer Hunter Review

Deer Hunter
Average Reviews:

I had been waiting with baited breath for this, and I cannot reccomend it highly enough. It has the best outdoor graphics I have seen on a PS2 and the levels are HUGE! no little valleys and then loading here... Just one load and you can explore a huge level hunting for deer, moose, even mountain lions and bears. There are little critters like squirrels and raccoons for target practice. The atention to detail is incredible. Leaves fall from the trees in the fall and the animals kick up dust and splash as they run through water ! The vehicles are very easy to control, actually being useful as opposed to a liability. The weapons are great and replicate the real world weapons very well. The fact that the designers included a split screen two player mode is a first for hunting games and is a worthwhile addition. I have a great time playing with my friends, as we hunt down animals in torney mode. The online is astounding. The other hunters appear exactly as you set them up and instead of the weapons just appearing their hands when you change them, the hunter actually reaches back into his pack and gets out the new weapon. Stalking through the woods for a prize buck and then spotting someone 100yds away sighting in on YOUR buck is a real rush as you try and bag it first. The AI on the animals is great and they are hard to kill! The graphics on the animals are great and the trophy room is presented as a museum style with all of your animals presented in brilliant dioramas ! All in all a very polished game and the only one you should get for PS2

For about the last year I've been using a modded HRAP3 with Sanwa buttons.Of course, that's really the best you can get. It's done the job, and it's done it well.So after initially trying out the TVC stick it seems like it should do the job, for now that is.

The buttons seems a bit mushy, but still responsive. The weight of the stick feels good, definitely not as light as I was expecting. The gloss on the cover art has this sort of grit (matte finish) to it.I'm not really sure how else to explain it, but it feels decent resting your hands on it.Like it or not, at this time, the TVC stick is the best (and one of only a couple) option for an arcade stick on the Wii.

Ultimately, time will tell if this stick holds up to hour after hour of play.Regardless if it does or does not, I have confirmed this can be modded just as easily (and in the same way) as the SF4 SE sticks. So if parts break, replace them. And according to numerous other arcade stick sources, supposedly the parts on the TVC stick are a "higher quality" (not Sanwa) than the parts on the SF4 SE, so who knows, it may be good to go for quite some time.

So basically it's 80 dollars for the best Wii arcade stick on the market at this time. It's moddable, and based on my (and others) initial impressions, seems decent.Like it or not, it's really one of two options for an arcade stick on the Wii.Give it a shot and see what you think!

Saitek PZ55 Pro Flight Switch Panel Review

This is a interesting little piece of plastic. And Irecommend and enjoy it with some unfortunate reservations. Be aware of a few little things that make you go, "Huh, what were they thinking?"

It ships with a hex tool to unscrew the screws on the companion pro flight throttle for mounting.Problem is, it's the wrong size....way too small...so you will need a #3 hex tool handy if you want to mount to the companion yoke. Also, the instructions suggest using the 2 inner screw mount points.I suggest you use 2 mount points wider apart, other wise the panel will sway from side to side.

The mounting bracket is quite flimsy. So much so that when you flip switches the panel console moves, front to back.Disappointingly poor engineering design especially when you see they have plans to hang more stuff off this in time to come.

The mag switch is mixed up (L/R should be R/L)

You can't assign or change functions to switches on this unit as you can with the yoke or throttle.

The Saitek website doesn't tell you what driver version is the latest much less what issues it addresses.

OK, that's the annoying stupid stuff.

The good stuff:There is a new driver available on the Saitek web site! The inoperative cowl flap switch has been fixed with driver rev 6.5.8.4(But it's either open or closed, nothing incremental.)

The inoperative deice switch has been fixed with driver rev 6.5.8.4(Still, if it's not implemented in FSX, why designate a switch for it?)

The incorrect landing gear light sequence has been fixed with driver rev 6.5.8.4 (Green is down, Red is in transit, Amber is gone)Everything else is really nice and I do enjoy not having to look for all these switches on keyboards or screens. Simply plug it into the back of the companion yoke and run a quick program which installs as an FSX (simconnect?) plugin and thats it.

My test flights were on a system running Vista 64 with an FSX default C172, a default Mooney Bravo and everything worked except the cowl flaps and as noted above. Also worked with an add on Eaglesoft Cirrus SR22. So, pretty successful for out of the box. And it looks cool.

But for silly oversights, Saitek could have had a brilliant unit here instead of just a good one. They need to pay attention to detail. Makes you wonder who is in charge of things there...and why?

So, it's 4 out of 5 now with the new driver.

USAF Review

I spent hours playing USNF97 Viet Nam era missions, so I was eager to boot up Janes USAF.At first blush, this game looks terrific. With the appropriately sarcasticCol. "Scooter" Davis as your IP, you go through training at Nellis. In my case I flew most missions in the F-105 "Thud".Once through training, I started to fly some of the pre-set VN missions.
Here are the problems I see in this game that distract greatly from its overall rating.
1)Air launched missiles, Sparrow, Shrike and Sidewinder are 100% accurate.I had my setting at "Realistic".Reading of this era combat details how notorious the Sparrow was for just falling off the rails. If you launch, you will get a kill.
2)The worst problem, your wingman are ineffective. In flying a mission against the Paul Doumer bridge, I've taken 100% casualities most of the time, that is MigCap, Weasel and Strike aircraft all get shot down. Some of these are just crashing into the ground.I know it was rough and those men who flew the missions had a lot of guts, but in the game it is almost impossible to have a successful mission because the rest of team does not do their job.
3) The published patch is suppose to fix some of the A/I problems. However I have tried about half a dozen times and can't get it load.
4)For some reason the maps in the mission generator won't load.I have yet to figure this one out.
I really want to like this game.It is good for a couple of weeks, but does not seem to have the long term interest of EAW, Mig Alley or MSCS2-Pacific.
