DS Phoenix Wright 2 (Japanese version; English language) Review

DS Phoenix Wright 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Phoenix Wright 2, was originally released on Gameboy Advance, but, like Phoenix Wright 1, has made the jump to Nintendo DS.

The English translation in this game is very well done.It has many more puns and Internet pop culture references than Phoenix Wright one.Apart from the Judge always calling the new (female) prosecutor 'sir' the English was perfect, and much funnier than the English Version the first Phoenix Wright.

Amongst all the old faces, several new characters are added to the lineup, including, perhaps the most ferocious prosecutor yet,Franziska von Karma and Maya's adorable cousin, Pearl.

Not surprisingly, the gameplay, music and graphics are almost identical to Phoenix Wright 1.A few new elements has been added or improved on.Maya gives you her Magatama, a magical jewel that allows you to see when someone is lying. While this can not be used in a court scene, it can be used in the detective scenes between court sessions.

Also, in Phoenix Wright, you had 5 exclamation marks in the court scenes. When you made a false accusation, one of these were taken away by the judge. This has been replaced by a blue bar. Now, if you make a large error, the judge will take away a larger section of the bar. It's now more risky than ever to take guesses.Evidence is everything in courts.

These two editions make the game significantly more difficult than the first. In addition, the cases are longer, and more complex.

However, unlike the first game, there is not a new DS exclusive case. There are only the four original Game Boy Advance cases to play.

Unfortunately, there is very little replay value in this game.

Nintendo DS Lite Travel Kit Review

Nintendo DS Lite Travel Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of accessory searching for my DS Lite before buying this kit - sight unseen - because it had the kind of accessories I needed and the one and only feedback so far was very favorable. I hadn't been to fond of much of the accessories for DS Lite so far, but I took a leap of faith with this one hoping for the best.

I was not disappointed! The kit came in today and, even though it's not the prettiest case out there, it is very practical and offers the protection I want for my DS Lite, especially for travelling.

It comes with:

1. A two sided travel bag; one side for the NDS Lite the other for accessories. I like this bag because it has exactly what I needed. A safe singular storage area for the NDS game unit and a separate area for the accessories I usually travel with. There's enough pocket space in the accessory side for games, styli, a rumble pack, earbuds, and a cleaning cloth - which is what I usually travel with. This suits me just fine. The bag has a hook-and-loop belt strap on the back to attach to your backpack or belt. I'll likely do neither, but it's nice to know that it's there. The one fault with this bag (maybe it's just mine) is that it does not handle overstuffing very well - the zipper will separate when you try to close it. It happened twice when I was testing the bag, but it easily and securely closed again when I removed the extra bulk that was causing the zipper to separate. Between that and the ugly logo (my opinion), that makes this bag more like 4 stars instead of five. It also has an attachable wide strap/lanyard that one can sling it over there shoulder or wear around neck.

2. Earbuds. Althought I really wanted the original Nintendo headphone as my sis raved about how good they sounded, these earbuds will do nicely and easily fit in my ear. These earbuds are nicely made; certainly not your standard cheap buds I've seen out there. I'm not an audiophile, but so far these earbuds sound nice and clear. No complaints from me.

3. An extra white stylus and the comfort pen grip. The comfort pen grip is definitely a plus. The NDS Lite stylus very neatly and securely slips into the comfort pen grip allowing you to use your OEM stylus and be more comfortable at the same time. Recently I've started using my Palm stylus to be able to play NDS games more comfortably, but that will now be replace with this comfort grip pen. This is a definite plus and made me all the more happy with my purchase.

4. Car charger. I really don't know how often I'll really use this, but it's nice to have anyway. It keeps my options open. The back end of the charger glows blue when plugged in.

5. Screen protector and soft card. I already have a screen protector on my NDS Lite, so these will serve to replace them when the time comes. Soft card is for smoothing out the screen protector during installation.

6. Screen cleaner with bonus cartridge holder and wrist strap. The wrist strap was a disappointment. I was hoping for a decent wriststrap I can secure to the NDS Lite that I can wear during game play to avoid accidental droppage. This wrist strap will not fit my needs. It's not very long and barely fits over my skinny wrists. I don't see how the practicality of it. However the other items will come in handy. I'll likely keep a soft cloth inside the cartridge holder.

7. Game case. No frills here. Nice silicone fitted interior; sturdy plastic exterior. Comes an extra silicone insert for GBA games (or for rumble pack). The game case also has spots for extra styli - one for NDS Lite, one for the smaller original NDS stylus.

Overall, I'm very please with my purchase at this kit will suit my needs very well. I got what I needed and it looks handsome. So far I'm happy with the quality and the great price I got this whole kit for.

LUXOR Pharaoh's Challenge Review

LUXOR Pharaoh's Challenge
Average Reviews:

I can't figure out why that other reviewer gave this game three stars. It's a great game.

I was impressed with how well this translated to the "small screen."The images are crisp and clear, the controls are highly responsive (lag time would kill you on this game), and it is generally an entertaining time-waster.If you're thinking of getting it for a child, understand that there is really no educational value, although I think it encourages cognitive planning. My 7-year-old, who loves the Luxor computer games, is crazy for this one.She is able to play it without the frustration she has experienced with many popular children's DS titles (i.e. the ones with teenage TV personalities on the cover). She figured out the controls without my help, and I didn't hear from her for at least 20 minutes, except, "I'm on level 4!."I enjoy it, as well.

True, it is not terribly different from the computer version.I consider that a positive. We were expecting the Luxor we know and love, which is what we got.If you are interested in a "test drive," go to the Gamehouse website and download the 60-minute trial of one of the computer Luxor games. That should give you enough of a taste to decide if you will like this. The Luxor versions for the computer are the same basic idea as this:shooting marbles at a marble "snake" to make the snake disappear before it gets to the end of the track.

Jewel Quest Expedition Review

Jewel Quest Expedition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jewel Quest is a fun game - the story line that provides that background is pretty lame. 98% of the game revolves around solving "Bejeweled" type puzzles of increasing difficulty. Pretty fun

MY only complaint is that at $30 Jewel Quest is one of the more expensive games for the DS. In fact for an additional $5 you can buy Zelda.... which is more of a true game.Jewel Quest is more along the lines of a game you would buy for a cell phone. It is fun and is great at killing time - but it isn't too in depth.

Pro's

- Fun puzzles can help kill significant time on flights.
- The DS stylus works very well for this game
- Lots of variety in the puzzles
- I like the use of the "Gold Coins" that allow you to complete one unmarked spot.Con's

- A little expensive for the game's content - I think $20 is more appropriate but to each their own.
- The "story" is more annoying than anything.

As a whole - not bad - definitely worth buy if you ever see the game discounted on Amazon or on a discount shelf at a local store!

This game is actually pretty fun, I bought it for my nephew and I played it for a couple hours. It's a little too easy for adults (it's a kids game obviously), but my nephew loved it.It helps to be a fan of the show, and the mini-games are pretty entertaining. The makers captured the spirit of the show pretty well.I am getting this for my friend's kids and my niece for Christmas.

Hamsterz Life Review

Hamsterz Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
According to the Q&A area of Ubi-soft's website, there is no Ham-country per se.They say that the cage is Ham-country because it is a school (you teach the Hamsterz there), a bakery (you feed them from the food menu), etc.I think I would be happier had they just said that it wasn't included in the programming rather than trying to make it sound like the customers are all mistaken. Some people are going around claiming that you have to play the game for 72 hours to get Ham-country.However, I have it from the source that this is false and I don't recommend wasting 3 days of your life unless you truly enjoy the game.

Now, for a review of what is included in the game.I find it cute and my children all find it fun to play in small doses.A few of the mini games could be frustrating for younger children (and Mom), but my 7 year-old is able to tackle all of them.He is a very computer literate child though, so your mileage may vary. All in all, the controls are very intuitive, so there shouldn't be a problem.

You can not buy food and supplies. To get them you have to play mini games (only when the Hamster is in the mood) or find presents. When the Hamster asks if you want to play, you will see musical notes.Go to the main menu (i.e. so the Hamster is on the top screen) and press the button that appears with a musical note in it.If the kids have trouble playing the mini-games to get food and items, encourage them to use "Outing" then "Open Cage" to collect presents in the "bedroom."If your Hamster is hungry or thirsty and you have no food or drink items, I suggest adopting another Hamster. When you switch with "Hammy" the hunger and cleanliness of the Hamsterz will revery to "normal/ normal."That way you can get more supplies without having a tortured and complaining hamster (did I mention they complain?). You can have more than one Hamster, but only play with one at a time and they do not interact with each other.

Speaking of complaining... One of my favorite features of the game is that the Hamsterz will converse with you.My kids love it and it encourages my 5 and 4 year-olds to read. They have already picked up on some phrases like "Good Evening."With that in mind, the breeds all have different dialog accents (Australian, baby-talk, etc) so you may have to explain this to early readers. My kids get the biggest kick out of the voice recognition. This feature is very well done.We have had no problems at all with settings, background noise, or changing settings for more than one user (completely unnecessary for Hamsterz).

The holidays included with the game have strange (often culinary) names, so expect questioning as to why your child doesn't have A holiday from school on "Miso Day" or "Strawberry Day."

All in all, this is a fun "pet" game.My kids love it with or without Ham-country and I let them "take out" their hamsterz to play with and take care of for a half hour a night after dinner. That way, they are getting the most out of the program without getting easily bored. They received it on Christmas and still look forward to Hammy time every night. The only reason I have it less than 5 stars is because I do not care for the misinformation on their advertising regarding "Ham-country."

Tetris DS Review

Tetris DS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up Tetris DS on release (march 22nd for me) and have played the game solid for over a week now.I usually don't review games on Amazon but with so much mis-information in the other reviews I figured I'd step up to the plate and help out any gamers that may be on the fense about this title.

Single player offers quite a rash of modes to play through. Here's a breakdown of what they are.

Standard - Multiple modes of the regular standard tetris puzzle game, however with new changes as sanctioned by the people that own the Tetris license (not nintendo). The main changes are multiple preview boxes for upcoming pieces, the ability to rotate a piece indefinitely while you figure out where to go, and a hold box where you can put a puzzle piece you currently have (and if you have a piece in the hold box this will store the current piece you have and replace it with the one from the box). There are multiple modes of play within standard mode. The infinite rotate doesn't hurt things at all since in the higher modes where you need it the pieces appear at the top of the stack automatically without dropping.

Catch - If you've played games like Katamari Damacy, this pretty much flows along the same lines. You have a ball of tetris pieces that you can turn, move up and down, and you use it to "catch" or run-in-to pieces that fall down. It's almost like a vertical scrolling shooting game. The goal is to create a 4x4 block which then explodes after 10 seconds. This is actually a really great mode of play and could have been a standalone game easily.

Mission - Standard tetris, except you are given a task to do (like clear 2 lines at once) and a limited time to do it.Fail and you get junk pieces in your playing field and move to the next mission.Overall this mode is highly challenging and will challenge even the most hardcore tetris veteran.

Puzzle - This mode starts off quite simple but gets devilish as the levels increase. You are given 200 puzzles, each one presents you with the task of clearing the screen with the available pieces. The trick is, you must atleast clear one line with each piece placed, and you have to tell the game (through touch screen) which piece to place and what direction it should aim. Some of the puzzles are mindbending... some I find simple. It's really a great training mode for playing the full tetris game as it makes you realize all the various shapes possible that need filled and how to do it with a few pieces.I love this mode because if I only have a few minutes i can usually work through a few puzzles.

Touch - There are actually two very robust modes within this one.One is called "Tower" and you get to move the blocks with the stylus (or finger, or whatever) to create lines that help move this massive tower of pre-setup pieces until the cage at the top reaches the bottom. There's no gravity on the specific pieces or parts of pieces... which ads some complexity to the game. Also you can't rotate pieces in the level 4 & 5 settings which makes you think more about creating smaller parts. The other main mode is called "Puzzle".There are 50 puzzles in this mode and you have the same restrictions as tower except you are given a smaller pre-setup of pieces and you have a Mission such as 'clear all the pieces but leave one L piece'.It's really another great mode and really great for when I've only got a few minutes.

Push - In my opinion this is the best of the best new modes. In it it's you versus the CPU.The field is similar to a football field with yardlines... and while you try to work to create your stack and get tetris's the cpu below you is doing the same thing. With completed lines, the stack moves. The goal is to force your opponent over the "end zone" area on their side of the field. While simple at first... quickly upping the AI to it's levels 3 through 5 settings will put you on your toes.Which you'll need if you take the game online.Nicely with all these new modes, which all seem pretty wonderful (and i'm hopelessly addicted to the Push mode), Nintendo was nice enough to theme each mode off of one of their classic frachises. Here's the breakdown of modes and their themes. This is great if you have a history with Nintendo that dates back to the NES because the artwork is nearly all NES stuff.

Standard - Mostly Mario, but as the levels go up you will see stuff from most of Nintendo's key franchises... and a nice treat when you get to level 19 for Tetris fans.

Catch - Metroid

Mission - The Legend of Zelda

Puzzle - Yoshi's Cookie

Touch - Balloon Fight

Push - Donkey Kong... Whew!I know this is a long review but this is a MASSIVE game package. And I haven't even touched on Nintendo Wifi Online nor the massive offerings in single pack multiplayer where you get upto 10 players off one pack.

I'm going to just cover the ONLINE side of the game because i have to say as great as Tetris DS is offline and with friends in multiplayer it's fantastic ONLINE as well. There's three basic modes of play.Standard with 2 player and no items, Standard with 4 players and items (which are triggered with a button press when you get them), and the fantastic PUSH mode is the last (which is 2 players).Every mode is actually really great. And unlike the standard mode offline in singleplayer, the new feature of being able to infinitely rotate a piece will do you no good in competition because there it's who creates lines that wins.Push mode is actually the main mode I've been playing online. While the AI offline is really strong (expecially on Level 5), online you'll encounter many people with a vast array of strategies.

Thus far with Tetris DS online I've had no problem finding games at various times through the day.Usually i can get in a game Push in a matter of a minute or less... and with the ability to continue (if my opponent does as well) it can make for a really great tournament. All in all, this is by far the best tetris experience of my life.. and in my opinion the best puzzle game on the DS (and i've played nearly all of them). The new modes don't just serve as new gimmicks on the Tetris franchise but actually serve as great tools to train yourself better for the main game.Having a rabid fanbase of online gamers to face off against as well is really nice when you've got 5 minutes and want to get a few quick games in without rounding up a pack of friends.

It's rare I rate any games on Amazon. But with so much wrong information in the other reviews (ex: The guy that puts down the online service which I have had no problems with) I hope atleast a few people are helped with this detailed report on Tetris DS.If you are still on the fense... maybe you don't like puzzle games?Really this is for the puzzle game people out there, no offense. But even new people to tetris will find this is a great entry into the series because of all the modes that really help you to learn the game.Plus every single mode has a tutorial on "how to play"... which makes digging into this title all the more easy.

Harvest Moon DS Cute Review

Harvest Moon DS Cute
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Harvest Moon DS: Cute -

Before I get started, just incase anyone that reads this has NOT picked up a Harvest Moon game before... Harvest Moon is a farming simulator with a neo love system embedded into it.Throughout your play, you'll grow crops, raise animals, (in this version) date guys, and move on to have a happy family.
In this game, the Goddess has been punished by the Harvest God for being too lax with her duties. You, as a rookie farmer, have to unseal the cast away sprites and return the Harvest Goddess to her place, all while finally proving yourself worthy to the Harvest God.
Though I've given a brief description, the game play is more diverse and satisfying than what I'm cluing in to.My advice to anyone who has not played a Harvest Moon game and is curious is to just pick it up and see for yourself whether or not it's for you.
Moving on from the introduction...
This is very much like the original Harvest Moon DS released with the male main character, except now you play as one of two girls. There are some added items and the dialogue has changed, but the aspect of the game is still the same, just flipped around.
I was worried while it was being made, weren't we all? When the boy's version was released, it contained so many bugs it was frustrating. Don't get me wrong, this game is not without flaw.It has a few spelling errors here and there, though not enough to bother me or the game play.
As far as the changes go, since you play a girl, the marriage candidates have been switched towards the male spectrum, with more than enough possible bachelors to satiate anyone who has waited for this.Natsume has also (finally) added in a new guy, I might be a bit biased but I'm happy with the add. :)
Continuing on the subject of changes, they've added a wallpaper and flooring system, as well as a clothing change system and a few new events.
All in all, if you're a girl, or just a big fan of the Harvest Moon series, this is most likely a must have for you.

Nintendo Ds Lite Clear Crystal Hard Case NDS Case Review

Nintendo Ds Lite Clear Crystal Hard Case NDS Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought a Nintendo DS character case and stylus for my 5-1/2 yr old son and also bought this clear Nintendo DS cover for it.The clear cover fits the DS unit very nicely, it is easy to attach (2 separate pieces) and still fits in the character cloth case we purchased. It can remain on while charging too, as there is a slot where the outlet plug would go.The DS unit has been dropped while this hard clear case was on it, and the cover protected the corners of the DS.The cover did slightly pop off an edge, but it still protected the unit and one "click" and it was back on.Since the cover snaps on to the top and bottom separately, it still allows the unit to be opened for use.

I don't see a problem with this case being durable or lasting.Seems pretty good, so far, for the money.

Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow Review

Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was greatly impressed by the last GBA Castlevania which was Aria of Sorrow. I even went on to call it the greatest Castlevania of all time. Well, now theres a new king and its the latest for the Nintendo DS.

If youve played the previous game, Aria of Sorrow, then you will be right at home. Everything in Dawn of Sorrow follows Aria very closely. From the maps, enemies, souls, weapons, and graphics. But this time everythings better. The amount of polish in this game is ridiculous. Everything looks, plays, sounds, and acts perfectly. This is one refined game.

The amount of depth to this game is crazy too. From the hundreds of souls you can gather, which is insanely addictive, to the numerous awesome weapons you can forge, this game will keep you item gatherers busy.

And if youre just a casual player then this game has what you want too. A nice story, fun gameplay, and some challenge thrown in for good measure.

Also, sealing the monsters away for good with the stylus is surprisingly fun. It adds a great deal of tension to already tough boss battles. Its such a simple and fun idea that its brilliant. Right now Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow is the greatest game available for the Nintendo DS. If you have a DS you HAVE to own this game. This is the type of game that you would buy a system or portable for. Its that good.

Spelling Challenges and More Review

Spelling Challenges and More

I am an adult gamer who likes vocabulary & spelling. They were my favorite subjects in school.I was excited to see they made a game out of it!!

There are variety of word games.Pick the one that's misspelled, the one that's correct, unscramble the words, & spell the word they flash at you quickly.Real neat.I really enjoyed it.The games are timed and you collect coins depending on how well you did.It keeps track of your points and you can try to beat others with the score or beat your own score. You enter your age and they'll give you your skill according to your age.If it's a 9 year old, they'll give 9 year old's reading level. If you enter an adult's age, the words get harder. You also unlock some new games once you beat certain games or level.

I've played with it for 40 minutes and I like it.I can't wait to go back and play some more.Everything is done with the stylus and there is no problems with it's usage. The only downside is that it does not use a QWERTY as a way to find the letters. It's in alphabet order.I am a typist and I know where the letters are in QWERTY way but since it's in alphabet order, I learned pretty quickly where the letters are and became faster in finding the letters I wanted eventually.I don't know how this game is long term but so far it's a great word game.

Uno/Skip-Bo/Uno Freefall Review

Uno/Skip-Bo/Uno Freefall
Average Reviews:

Granted there may not be as many people out there like me that I can't get enough of Uno but that aside this game is a lot of fun. There are three games included:
1. Uno - traditional card game you can play against the computer or other people.
2. Skip-Bo - another great card game
3. Uno Freefall - this is a puzzle type game where the different uno blocks fall from the top and you have to line them up to elimate them in groups.

Uno and Skip-Bo have multi-player options to either play against someone with another DS or play against other people by passing the DS around. There's no online play with this game though, which is too bad.You can only play wirelessly from system to system.

Overall, I nice buy for the price.

Cake Mania Review

Cake Mania
Average Reviews:

You play as Jill, you are trying to raise enough money to help your grandparents buy back their bakery before the evil new mega mart on the block runs them out of business for good. Despite the fact that you are basically doing the same thing over and over, you are having so much fun you don't really care. Customers order cakes, you take their order, bake it, frost it, and give it a design if necessary, then collect your money and on to the next customer, its that simple. There really isn't much else to the game, yet as another reviewer says there is hardly room for error in this game. It starts off simple but eventually more customers file in at at a faster rate, the cakes get more complex, and meanwhile customers lose patience.

But to counter this you can use your money to buy more ovens, frosters, etc You can also upgrade the equipment you already have to run a more efficient kitchen. You can even buy products to settle down customers so they won't storm off and cost you money. For example, customers will have more patience if you give them free samples of cupcakes.

From a technical standpoint, the main problems I had was that some of the cake topper icons were small and too close together so if you picked the wrong one you were stuck with a cake no one wanted costing you money (unless someone came in and bought it later). Also, I had a problem with the Halloween two layer cakes at first because the Jack O' Lantern andRectangular shapes looked so similar it was hard to tell what shape was at the bottom. I ended up making the wrong cake a few times, costing me money.

The game comes with the expansion pack CAKE MANIA: BAKE TO THE BAKERY. This is unlocked after you beat Cake Mania. The storyline is different but it is basically the same thing just harder. The customers order more complex cakes and come into the store faster etc. This is really a great game for the price, but if you don't like repetitive games and like diverse gameplay it is not for you. Like one person already said, the challenge is in the constant multi-tasking.
