(More customer reviews)Excellent game, from the progression through levels to the track editor, the game is near perfect.My only complaint is the third type of vehicle is very undesirable, I've gone on line to race other people's tracks and no one is even using the third type.But the on line driving experience is even better with official rankings and the custom paint shop allows you to easily and endlessly customize your vehicle (Leopard skin my first choice).The speed and control are beyond impressive.Track Mania Sunrise is the perfect racing game with the ability to create the perfect track.The stunts and aerial effects are amazing with awesome camera effects during the jumps.Maybe next year they'll allow contact and collisions with on line racing.I'm not easily impressed and I own a dozen driving games including GT3, WRC, Test Drive, Need for Speed, and Midnight Club.Track Mania tops them all.

(More customer reviews)Twisted metal 2 has got to be the best version of twisted metal.I can't complain about the graphics, the characters are really cool, there are a number of different weapons you can use on your enemies, there's diverse landscapes to play on, the controls are easy to use.The Antarctica level has a fun feature where the land suddenly drops away and you can ram your enemies off huge cliffs.The Amazonia level has lava to drive on.The only problem is that you can't stop playing and waste numerous hours on the playstation. Well, I got to go play!!!

Gran Turismo 2 Review

(More customer reviews)Visually, GT has been improved over its top selling predecessor.While the cars are graphically the same, the backgrounds are much more detailed and sophisticated.Track design is superb with the addition of a few trueto life road courses.As of yet, I have not noticed any pop up which isunbelievable considering the amount of detail involved in this game.Theframe rate is pretty consistent although I have encountered slow down(about 20fps) when cornering on a few occasions.This struck me as oddbecause there was no traffic around at the time.The rally racing optionis fantastic and a lot of fun to play.What a great addition to thegame!
Experienced GT gamers will find the control identical to theoriginal Gran Turismo.For newcomers to this type of racer, there willprobably be about a 1-2 hour learning curve.While many people find thelicense testing a nuisance, it is ideal for the entry level gamer (ornewcomer to GT) to learn the concepts required to be successful in thistype of racing sim.For those who are more experienced, many of the testscan be passed in 1-3 attempts.
The variety of cars is unbelievable.Theonly noticeable absentees are Pontiac and Porsche. Many if not all of theoriginals have stayed to make a second appearance plus many, MANY newadditions. The range in variety of cars is incredible: from VW Beetles tothe Vector to super McLaren type cars.One thing that struck me as odd wasthe varied "model years" of some cars.The 2000 Toyota Celica is present,but GT2 still showcases the '97 Mitsubishi Eclipse and '96 Corvette seen inGT1.The Japanese styled Acura Integra has not been given the"American facelift" in this edition of GT either.
My onlyserious gripes in this game are the damage/collision factors and theextremely poor AI.How can this game be considered to be the "ultimateracingsim" when a player can slam into another car at 100+mph around acorner and use it as a "cushion" (in order to not have to reduce yourspeed) to take the turn?It is very disheartening and it takes away fromthe game.A player should "pay" for reckless driving!Games like TOCA 2demand responsible driving in addition to offensive and defensive racingtechniques.In GT2, you can slam into another car's quarter panel and nothave to worry about damage (or damage of any significance if you use the"collision option") or spinning out.There are no accidents andunfortunately, that takes a lot of the excitement away.You can create amonster of a car, and just rip around a track slamming into walls will noill effects.That doesn't seem right to me.Realism?I think not.
Inthis edition of Gran Tursimo, there are only 6 cars on track per race (inboth the arcade version and simulator version).I would have liked to haveseen at least 10-12 cars per race.
My last gripe is the AI, or lack thereof.It feels as if I am racing against mindless "drones."Again, the poorAI takes away from the excitement and this problem plagued GT 1 as well.Iwas hoping it would be corrected this time around.
Despite it'sdrawbacks, Gran Turismo 2 still remains the greatest racing title to evergrace a home gaming console.It is tremendous fun, and it is highlyrecommended. My wife even loves it!
I better start buying lotterytickets - because work just seems to be getting in the way of my gamingtime!

Need For Speed: Underground 2 Review

(More customer reviews)Need for Speed Underground 2 (NfSU2) is the latest installment in a long-running series of EA racing games.The "Underground" element wraps the game up in a world of nighttime drag races and super-tuned and modified import coupes ala "The Fast and the Furious" movies.

The most engaging part of the gameplay is the career mode, which allows you to build your reputation and your bankroll by entering events found throughout a sprawling urban landscape.All of the now-familiar features are here:a variety of race types, a huge selection of cars and options to be unlocked, purchased and installed, etc.There's a lot of straight-up racing fun to be found on these streets.

The graphics are really good;not Gran Turismo good, but close.The cars are especially fine, and you've got ample opportunity to examine your customized baby.You'll occasionally get a mini-mission to have your car photographed for a magazine cover where you control the background, "pose" and camera angle.Sure it's kind of a silly way to build your bank, but not a total waste after you've spent an hour selecting the perfect color scheme and combination of paint and artwork for your car.

One minor gripe about the graphics is the lack of options for camera angles.Given how big the city is, the always-nighttime gameplay and the fact that some shortcuts and objectives are tucked away between buildings, it can be tough to spot things.I feel the other reviews when they complain about long times searching for this or that between races.Another minor problem is the perpetual nighttime during gameplay.Coupled with the brightly lit and highly detailed environment, it's sometimes too much to look at and the car can actually get lost in the overall scene.

The controls are intuitive and well-designed.One of my favorite features is the ability to use the right analog stick as the accelerator and brake.Couple it with a manual transmission (shifting uses the L2/R2 buttons) and you've got a great amount of subtle control over your car.It's not as good as playing with a wheel and pedals, but it really beats the usual x-and-square two-button setup (which is also available at all times if you prefer).

Does it play a lot like GTA-lite?Of course it does;it's meant to do so.There's a plotline running through the career mode focused on getting revenge on the rival who did you wrong before you landed in Bayview.It's not as deep or sequential as the GTA missions, so you're free to do pretty much whatever you want in whatever order you want.This can be good or it can lead to a lot of aimless driving around.

The game also struggles a little bit with identity - what game does NfSU2 want to be?It's not an exact sim like Gran Turismo, although you can certainly tune and tweak your car's performance options all day long if that's your thing.The race action has a big-time arcade feel, but it's not simply an arcade racer because of the GTA-esque missions in career mode.During some lulls in the action, you may find yourself wanting to pop this out in favor of one of those other games instead.

Nonetheless, the good easily outweighs the bad in this good-looking and ultimately exciting racer.It does a very nice job of satisfying fans of all flavors of driving games:arcade, sim and mission.

PROS
*Beautifully-rendered cars (and SUVs) that can be exhaustively customized in terms of looks and performs
*Exciting racing action with very little learning curve
*Well-designed controls make the most of the PS2 controller

CONS
*Too much time getting around the huge environment
*Notable lapses in realism, i.e. gigantic crashes with no consequences;no cops at all (I guess then it would simply be a GTA clone)
*Lots of product placement gets a bit heavy after a while - meet me at Burger King, the garage is next to Best Buy, I'll call you on my Cingular wireless, etc.

IndyCar Series Review

(More customer reviews)I'm a native of Indianapolis and am a fan of Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and like PS2 racing games.I enjoy racing around IMS in my PS2 Nascar Thunder and Formula 1 games, so I was very excited about IndyCar Series when it came out and I could race the 230+ MPH vehicles I watched many times in person over the years on the track that I know so well.
But, as other reviewers have noted, there is no steering wheel support for this game (I have the Logitech wheel, which is essentailly the standard for PS2), but I don't think that you would know that from the information on the box for the game.I can imagine the look on my face when I plugged in my wheel and... nothing.
The game plays OK with the standard controller and the graphics and sound are decent, but it just isn't the same as driving with a well-calibrated wheel in your hand.I'll make sure I research my next racing-related product first.

* wide open environment (the entire 'big island' of Oahu, Hawaii)
* clever and seamless mixing of SP and MP experiences when online
* a truly huge selection of cars, from foreign to domestic, and muscle cars to exotics
* impressive vistas and white-knuckle racing challenges, with strangers and (with a little work) with friends
* driving wheels really make a difference, although you can race with a joystick, pc game pad controller, or just your keyboard (you will have the most fun and the best driving experience with a wheel, however - serious drivers won't think twice about this)
* NPC cars seem to ask, for the most part, like common people driving around and doing what they do, including signalling to turn and slowing down for intersections, obeying the traffic lights, and so on
* hit too many cars and the police will chase you - you can outrun them, or you can crash and burn and find yourself paying a fine or even spending a little downtime in the slammer to think about the error of your ways
* buy houses in scenic places with 4, 6, 8, or 10-car garages
* keep a stable of cars in multiple houses around the island
* tunnels!
* multiple car classes, from E - A (with G having some surprises of its own)
* ability to take screenshots in mid-race, changing camera angles, zooming in and out, and so forth.catching air and taking a screenshot is too cool

Test Drive Unlimited cons:
* weird save bug that may corrupt your profile and cost you your latest progress - suggest saving your savedgames off to another location after each successful session
* some NVIDIA-related drivers issues (check the Atari TDU forums for which drivers seem to work and what to do when they don't)
* police NPCs are drones.If you blow the doors off a police car, they don't chase you down.Apparently, it's ok to speed as long as 'race clean'

Overall, this game has high replay value, no monthly charges, a helpful community, and some of the best PC racing action I've ever experienced in eleven years of gaming (coming second only to the vehicular carnage game Carmageddon, lo, these many years ago).You may need to hit the forums to figure out how to do this or that, but when the game is working as it should, it is fast, gorgeous, and a metric ton of fun.

If you have ever played Smugglers Run and love the choice of roaming around, you'll love ATV Off Road Fury. First, the good things: This game has INCREDIBLE GRAPHICS!!!! The graphics are crystal clear with outstanding surroundings and breath-taking backgrounds. This game allows you to do 6 options, Training, Maxxis Nationals, Stadium Supercross, Freestyle Competition, Cross Country Enduro, and Pro Career. You can customize your four-wheeler by fixing its tire friction, front and rear shock, front and rear spring, gear ratio(speed and acceleration), steering, and braking. You can also choose between 20 ATV's, including top brands such as Ravage, Honda, Yamaha, Havoc, Kawasaki, and Polaris. Here's a description of the options. Training mode teaches you the basics of becoming a pro, from riding wheelies to landing jumps. The Maxxis Nationals allows you to practice or race in beautiful outside courses. The closest view is from behind the driver.Overall this game is an absolute must have for all of the intense racing fans.

WRC: World Rally Championship Review

(More customer reviews)Okay, maybe that is a bit much, but at least the cars can get damaged, unlike in Gran Turismo. Unfortunately, they seem to get damaged very easily. But, hey, that's the WRC for ya! After all, one guy in the WRC smoked an engine this year when he clipped a snow bank with the front of his car thus blocking the air flow to to the radiator with a mess of ice and snow.
But, on to the game. First off, this game is presented exactly as you see it on the WRC TV coverage. Same graphics, same narations, and pretty much the same camera angles. Even the music is the same. So, if you like watch the WRC, you are in for a treat.
The graphics are some of the best out there. The headlights at night when you do some of the night time rallys are a treat. The sun gets in your eyes at times and makes it hard to navigate some of the mountain sides.
The scenery is top notch. Spectators are as dumb in this game as they are in the real world - they stand right at the side of the road all over the place. And they have those can-o-air-horn things as well. The terrain is spectacular, and on some stages you will get to see it as your car flys off the side of a very large mountain. Everything is modeled very well. The cars look like the real things.
An added treat to all this is the navigator. I finally learned what the heck he was saying as I never could figure it out when I would watch WRC on TV. Now I know. Learn how to do his rally notes and you too can drive your friends nuts when you ride with them.
There is one down side to the game though - when you are doing the in car camera and are watching the driver and the navigator, the navigator seems to be throwing his voice and doing a ventriloquist act. Would be much more impressive if the programmers had actually made the navigators mouth move while he is reading the notes.
The game is hard, but is not extremely hard. I managed to get 1st place in the driver's championship as Marcus Gronholm (who won the real WRC DC this year, btw), and managed to get three extra rallys open by finishing in 1st place in them. You have to get points in each rally to move on to the next one, so you really have to push it. I did this with the medium difficulty level. Younger folks may have some troubles doing this.
I sure hope bam! comes out with WRC 2002 soon. If you are a fan of WRC, you are gonna love this. It is a very good representation of what kinds of nuts become WRC drivers. They would have to be after seeing some of these courses.

Pizza Delivery Boy Review

(More customer reviews)I got this game for my husband because he loved Order Up. The reason we like Pizza Delivery Boy is that it's simple and you can just start playing right away. You make pizzas by memorizing where the toppings go and placing them exactly as shown. You can peek at the order picture if you forget but it is timed.I wish it were two player, although it is in a way because as the number of toppings increase it gets harder to remember where things go without help. Next you deliver the pizzas by driving and avoiding obstacles. You lose points by being late. The vehicles are a little harder to control than say, Mario Kart cars (even without the wheels as on GameCube). You also use your vehicles to run errands all to earn money and unlock recipes,ingredients, tips and tricks. Some of the errands are annoying when it gets difficult to locate items you need to complete your tasks, especially the timed ones. We kept failing one or two because we needed just a fraction of a second more. Overall great game design. There is only a small problem with the Wii remote (hopefully only ours) and the handling of the pizzas. Sometimes it makes you drop toppings or just responds slowly. We haven't finished the game so these are the only problems we've encountered. But this games is definitely worth the $25.

You get to choose a weapon to use during a race like baseball bats, e.t.c. and knock people off of their bikes with them. There are a few levels where you drive into oncoming traffic and if you hit the cars and trucks at the right speed and angle, you can flip them over. The only thing that I didn't like is that your bike is a little hard to control and it is easy to run into things. Overall it is a good game for a good price. -Clark

Gran Turismo 3 A-spec Review

LESS CARS-many less...a lot of my favorites have gone the way of the dodo.126 cars to start with, with a few more added later, is a lot, but when compared to four to five times that in gt2, it pales in comparison...
DUMB A.I.-sure the computer cars are a little more "intelligent" than before, but when a random car that had never been touched slams its brakes, effectively taking it out of the race, just to stop the player, then their is work to be done... besides this, all cars still follow a racing line, albeit not as religiously as before.a.i. could be better...
NO DAMAGE-understandably, the manufacturers will not allow the gt producers to portray their perfect cars as anything less than that(i.e. no scratches or dents in these work machines), but slamming a wall at 200km/h plus,(i have japanese version) will have repurcussions.i will gripe and gripe until this is corrected!
NO WORKING HEADLIGHTS-i will give my right eye for a left one that can see the road!why turn on theheadlights at all?the street lights obviously do an adequate job!the headlights look pretty, but do nothing!yes this is a minor gripe, but simple physics is not too much to ask for!argh...
ok...with that out of the way, time for the good...
GRAPHICS-obviously being the first thing one will notice, the graphics are phenomonal!sure, the audience remains a cardboard cut-out and the rear- view mirror does not present all the fixins(very generic), but with these being the only flaws, this game is truly a sight to behold.the lighting is extremely impressive(i was actually blinded by the sun) and the textures are right on.i have read of texture lighting problems, but have yet to experience any.all the touches are in the right places.and the replays...beautiful!
MUSIC-again, sony got different bands for the soundtrack...like lenny kravitz, feeder, grand theft audio, overseer...it really keeps you motivated.although i do like the music in gt2 a bit better(one of the best video game soundtracks ever), this music was still right on!
MORE RACES-even more races including the gt2 rally races and some f-1 racing this time, the race options are amazing!
IMPROVED PHYSICS-not a very noticeable change, as gt2 had great physics, but a significant one at that. rear and mid engine cars do not flair as wildly out of control as in the past, and the new wet ground physics are great.the pinball action off the side rails remains, however...
running out of space, i realize there is a lot to say about this game, and it is an extremely enjoyable experience.granted, the time to make each car model limited the selection this time around, but there are still more cars than any other ps2 racer.try it out and see...especially if you have never played a gran turismo game...you are sure to enjoy!

(More customer reviews)I got a chance to play GT4 at E3 in May 2003 and GT4 Prologue at the Game Developers Conf in March of 2004. I also own the GT4 Toyota Promotional package. The first thing I noticed was the improved graphic detail, especially in the scenery. Rumor has it that Polyphony Digital, in development, added too much detail and overloaded the processor. It truly should be THE game that pushes the PS2 to its graphical limits. The streets of New York City are incredibly detailed as I lost my first race while being awed by scenery. The rally course is unbelievable. Seriously, the pre-rendered graphics are indistinguishable from reality. See the movies on GameSpot dot com. The real-time game play graphics while driving are equally as good.

The driving physics model was once again improved from GT3. The most noticeable change was improved realism in car handling at the extremes of traction. I have routinely compared driving cars on GT3 with the real cars I have driven at the actual Laguna Seca track. The new physics model in GT4 more correctly depicts the oversteer problems encountered during hard braking. In GT3, I can stand on the brakes and maneuver the car somewhat. But in GT4, the car gets unruly quite quickly if you start to turn while braking at the threshold, which is CORRECT. In the Toyota promotional package, the wheels can actually lock up! It seems to respond more accurately to mid-throttle and maximum throttle inputs while controlling the drifting car.

The new Logitech steering wheel is improved dramatically. It has both the paddle shifters and a "bump" shifter, simulating the sequential gearboxes of racecars and shifter karts. The steering wheel has more turns lock to lock than your typical driving wheel. I felt that the wheel was giving realistic pressures without any surprising yanks. They also improved the feel of the steering wheel while running over the rough, bumpy, inner curbs and the rumble strips on the exits of turns by adding more force to the wheel. It really pulls now and calibrates itself with GT4! Thumbs up on the wheel!

Likely tracks in the final game would be Laguna Seca, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas downtown, Circuit Tsukuba, New York City Circuit, Fuji Circuit, Cita d' Aria, Hong Kong, the Costa di Amalfi tarmac rally track in Italy, and Germany's famous 13-mile-long Nurburgring. I was told by the guys at Infineon Raceway (Sears Point) that Kazunori Yamauchi and the GT4 crew were there for several days to model the track.

Likely improvements include expanding the license tests to act more like a racing school. My friends at the Skip Barber driving school at Laguna Seca tell me many developers from Polyphony Digital have been to racing school there. Also, a detailed replay mode will allow you to pose your car to create a digital image/picture to email or print out.

I need to actually play the game for a few days to come up with any faults. But there are no noticeable faults during the 2 hours I was fortunate enough to play the game. After spending two years beating the gold times and the demos in all of the license tests in GT3, as well as finishing all other races in Arcade mode and Simulation mode, I can truly say that Gran Turismo 4 continues to improve the simulated race driving experience, not just in simulated accuracy, but in entertainment value as well. Need For Speed: Most Wanted Review

Visually this game is stunning. Add to that a nearly endless selection of customization options for your rides and were talking some serious eye candy and I didn't even need a high end graphics card to run it smoothly with all the video options maxed out. My only complaint about the graphics is the lack of wide screen resolution settings. As a result, the screen is stretched on my wide screen monitor.

The racing, in all modes, is fun, though lacking in realism. It seems to me EA wanted to make another Need For Speed game and add a pinch of GTA into the mix in that you get points for causing as much damage to city property and police vehicles as possible. In drag race mode, if you hit an object at a high enough speed and your car will be "totaled" and you automatically lose. It would have been nice for this feature to be extended consistently throughout the game rather than turning roadside objects into targets for your car to flatten.

The difficulty between different race modes is very unbalanced. For example, competing in a circuit race against other drivers is very easy throughout the game whereas running a timed interval race gets tougher the higher up the blacklist you progress. This is both good and bad. While it's nice to have the easy races to generate income, having to attempt some of the harder race modes twenty times just to progress your career is tedious.

All the negatives of game play are overwhelmingly outweighed by the positives. The courses are fun and there are some pretty creative shortcuts; some that help, some that don't. The police chases are loads of fun and listening to the in game police scanner adds a lot of atmosphere. Another great feature about the game is the ability to turn "Catch Up" on or off. One of the most annoying things in a lot of racing games is the computer drivers will "cheat" if you get ahead of them and you can't pull away from them. My guess is developers do this to keep things competitive, though I see it as more of a lack of good AI, but in NFS Most Wanted you can turn this off. Great bonus.

Finally, a word about the music and FMV. A very negative word. In a nutshell, it takes away so much polish this game has to offer. Having to sit through the opening FMV sequences in the beginning of the game (I couldn't find a way to skip them) is torturous. What's worse is the music selection in the game. It's horrendous, unless you're into rap, hiphop, and bad metal (in which case I still don't think fans of those genres would consider it good music). That you can't play your own MP3 list through the game is an unforgivable oversight by EA. I don't know what they were thinking, but in this era of gaming that is completely unacceptable.

To sum it up:

Pros: Great graphics, fantastic (and nearly endless) vehicle customization options, large selection of vehicles, police chases are loads of fun.

Cons: The music is horrendous, can't play your own music through the game (the game loses one star for this alone), lack of realism in races, lack of wide screen resolution settings.

Mafia Review

(More customer reviews)If you like Grand Theft Auto, you will like this game. The two games certainly follow a similar approach, although there are quite significant differences (aside from the time this game is set in).
Personally, I like the graphics in Mafia better. Overall,t he whole story is told in more style, and is much more immersive IMO.
However, GTA offers more freedom while playing the game. Mafia offers a lot of freedom too, but in order to fulfill missions, one usually sticks to one path. Some people told me they don't like that as much. Personally, I like the Mafia gameplay at least as good as the GTA gameplay. Sure, GTA gives you a mission such as "destroy this car", and you have a million ways to accomplish that. Mafia gives you a mission such as "have this race car manipulated", and naturally, there is one place to pick it up, and one place to bring it to have the work done.
While you play the game however, that difference doesn't matter very much. In fact, Mafia provides a somewhat tighter storyline to provide a more detailed, intriguing story. I personally prefer that.
Mafia also seems to have a bit more variety in the missions. They have everything from missions on foot where you shoot 1st person style, to driving missions, to even races.
I like the controls in Mafia much better than GTA. In GTA, things never seem quite right. The controls used don't work truely well when you are an foot, and they don't work very well in the cars either. But they kinda work for both. In Mafia, you use the regular FPS-style keyboard and mouse combination when you walk, and a whole different set of controls when you drive. In fact, a (force feedback) steering wheel works very well in Mafia, while I found it to work not too well at all in GTA.

(More customer reviews)Driving fans rejoice!Jumping on the popularity of import street racing, and borrowing heavily from the driving scenes of The Fast and the Furious, NFS Underground is a combination of both beauty and brains that's a must-have for any racing fan; provided you have the hardware to handle it.Best of all, you don't have to endure Paul Walker's lame acting.
Slicked up and glowing with neon, EA's latest release is the most visually stunning NFS game produced to date.You can actually see the reflection of your car and the surroundings off the rain-soaked streets. Even more impressive are how the screen explodes in light and your surroundings shake into a chaotic mess as you approach speeds much higher than your car was originally designed to handle.It's the most visceral feeling of speed in a game yet as you really feel like your computer is doing 150mph.Unfortunately, all this eye candy comes at a price as you'll need some serious hardware to experience it in all its glory.Plan on having at least a Geforce 3 or a Radeon 9000 just for low detail settings.For full detail you'll need at least a Radeon 9600 or a Geforce 5600, not to mention a quick CPU and plenty of RAM.
Many liked EA's previous NFS release, Hot Pursuit, but I was disappointed as the attention to the driving physics seemed to go out the window.I had the same complaint about Midnight Club II; a game that, in a word, sucked.Fortunately, I can say this is not the case in NFS Underground.Each car has a distinctive feel, with individual strengths and weaknesses.It's an arcade racer at heart, but there are enough differences in the cars to make you want to experiment with different cars and find the one that suits your style of driving best.
Sound effects are top-notch.THX enabled, the engines roar to life and cars, buildings, and slow moving objects whoosh past your ears in true surround sound.Those with 4+ speaker setups are in for a real treat with this game.Also included are about 25 tracks ranging from rap to rock to techno, featuring artists like BT, Nate Dogg, Overseer, Fuel, and Static-X.While it's a decent selection, it's still only about 2 hours of music.Perhaps it's just me, but music with vocals gets repetitive and annoying over time as opposed to background music.I never liked that "Get Low" song much to begin with.I've heard it so much now I'm at the point of self-mutilation.Fortunately, EA provides you with the ability to customize the soundtrack so you can eliminate the songs you don't like.
The game isn't perfect.Even with 21st century technology, EA programmers are still unable to create any car damage modeling whatsoever.The cartoonish sight of your car doing triple flips in midair and on the street, only to land without a scratch seriously detracts from the otherwise realistic looking environment you're racing in.And, like all NFS games before it, you're still racing in a tunnel whether it looks like it or not.Just once I'd like to do an out of control jump and actually land in a swimming pool or someone's house instead of simply pinballing off the edge of the screen and back on to the road.The lack of a replay option is also unfortunate.
Customizing your car is a cool (and addicting) feature of NFS Underground, yet EA's method of implementation leaves something to be desired.I can understand that performance options, such as turbo, NOS, and weight reduction kits, are not unlocked until you win key races so the game remains balanced.What I don't understand are why visual upgrades such as paint, vinyl, and even decals are locked up?It's almost laughable to win a race just so you unlock a sticker.
Even with these minor gripes, I would have given it five stars.The "last straw," so to speak, is the A.I.The game gets insanely difficult as you start to climb the ranks.Races are won and lost in mere tenths of a second.What will set you off the deep end is the phenomenon of what I can only describe as the computer "throwing cars at you."As you round a blind corner or jump, you will frequently find yourself directly in the path of the only car on the road.I've been in situations where I have opponents directly to the left and right of me.Guess which lane the slow moving car is in?To some extent, you can use this to your advantage by closely following (drafting) an opponent so they slam into the traffic meant for you.Unfortunately, you still have to compensate for the fact that all of your opponents are psychic.I can't tell you the number of times an opponent managed to slam on the brakes to avoid traffic they couldn't possibly have seen in advance.As much as I love this game, this unfair advantage is too aggravating for me to be able to give it five stars.In the difficult settings, winning becomes less about driving ability and more about dumb luck that you don't slam into something that'll cost you the entire race.
That said, I still recommend this game for racing fans.It's a high-tech thrill that really does fulfill your Need for Speed and it's certainly one of the finest games EA has produced.
