Total Annihilation Kingdoms: The Iron Plague Review

Total Annihilation Kingdoms: The Iron Plague
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This expansion pack probably made TA: Kingdoms better. This expansion pack has a better story and a new faction that is pretty cool. With alot of new maps, units, scenarios, and a free on-line game mission, this is a great deal. The only problem is this is still a slower paced game in the line of the Command & Conquer series. A shame this game had to follow in the foot steps of the original TA as TA was very fast paced game. If you already have TA: Kingdoms, get this expansion pack and you won't be disappointed, especially the last battle.

Product Description:
Amazon.co.uk ReviewLead your Samurai warriors once more in Shogun Total War: The Mongol Invasion Add-On Pack for Shogun Total War. As before your task is to command thousands of loyal samurai and other troops against warring factions in massive battles that will determine the fate of Japan itself. Keeping true to the original game, this add-on pack offers four new campaigns and four new strategy map scenarios to take you straight into the action. The main thing you'll notice is the addition of the Mongolians to battle against as they try to invade Japan in the 13th century. Of course with any addition of a new race in a game comes a host of battlefield units to get to grips with and additions like the Mongolian Cavalry make for a gruelling challenge. Rather than just adding a new race and new challenges to conquer, EA have tinkered with the AI giving the gameplay a more balanced approach as well as improving the interface and presentation of the whole game overall. If you're looking to put a new lease of life into what is essentially a very good game then this will certainly do the trick. --Jason Denwood Manufacturer's DescriptionLet the battle begin! Feudal Japan is under attack from invading Mongol hordes in the official expansion pack for Shogun: Total Warlords. The new enemy threatens to destroy the country and offers a completely new style of gameplay with the focus on pillaging the Japanese landscape (rather than building). The Mongol Invasion pack will also offer an array of new and improved features to reintroduce players to the original Shogun title that delivered a revolutionary style of gameplay through its epic size battles, giving players command of thousands of warriors, each with their own unique Artificial Intelligence (AI) and fighting to unify Japan under their own powerful warlord.

Half-Life 2: Episode One Review

Half-Life 2: Episode One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't understand all of the criticism regarding the game's length vs. price, and its originality.Yes, HL: Episode One is a short game (4-7 hours, depending on how you play, whether you cheat, etc), but it costs less than half the price of a new game (even less than that on Amazon right now). This is a better game, both technologically and in terms of fun, than most full-priced games that are coming out.Why this obsession with game length?I'd rather have a terrific 6 hour game than a dull and tedious 15 hour game!

The GOOD: Graphics are even better than in HL2, they now use HDR lighting effects which look pretty cool. The gameplay is also more refined, with more creative logic puzzles, and better enemy AI.Your sidekick, Alyx, is one of the few computer companions that you actually care about, and she's smart and resilient (ie: doesn't walk into pillars all the time). The story is great fun, too.

The BAD: A couple of the puzzles can get annoying, such as the Antlion sections of level 3.The use of darkness and flashlight is atmospheric at first, but makes it feel like Doom 3 at times, and I don't mean that in a good way.And yes, it'd be great if the game were longer, but that's more a testament to the quality of the experience than a shortcoming!

The UGLY: Those Zombines... ugh.

Bottome Line:If you like HL2, this is a no-brainer.If you like a thinking man's shooter, this is for you as well.Recommended!

Product Description:

In this episodic sequel (formerly known as "Aftermath"), players continue the groundbreaking story that came to an explosive halt at the conclusion of Half-Life 2. Players once again assume the role of Gordon Freeman and team up with sidekick Alyx Vance to flee the remnants of a nearly-destroyed City 17 and it's eerily-empty streets. The action begins quickly as the damage to the citadel has been done and Gordon and Alyx must lead the evacuation effort. Enemies previously un-attackable such as crab and mortar synths now stand in your path as you try to help Gordon and others escape the imminent citadel blast.Once again utilizing the Source technology and HDR lighting popularized by Half Life 2, Episode One aims to begin the tradition of episodic content for Half Life fans. Gamers can expect over six hours of game play while taking out enemies with the help of Alyx's pet robot dog.

Half-Life: Counter Strike Review

Half-Life: Counter Strike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got Counter-Strike around August 2000 or 2001.It was and still is the greatest game I have ever played. Very addicting, fun, and original.
A while back they changed Counter-Strike so now, to play it, you would need to have this program Steam. It can be a bit hard to set up, but once it's set up anybody who plays it will be addicted.
Oh and if you don't have DSL or Cable, the download times are going to be ridiculous. DSL or Cable is definitly a plus when playing.
Through Steam Counter-Strike gets updated at least once every month, so most of the time it's a fresh bug-free game. I've probably spent hundreds of hours playing this.

Counter-Strike 1 Anthology Review

Counter-Strike 1 Anthology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is nice to be able to play a game that has a voice capability in game instead of having to deal with Ventrilo or Teamspeak. Also one thing i want to mention is when you buy this game here is a list of games that come with it and their ratings. (They dont tell you about a couple of them)

Counter Strike 1.6 (5 Stars)
Counter Strike Condition Zero (4 1/2 Stars)
Counter Strike Condition Zero Deleted Scenes (4 1/2 Stars)
Day Of Defeat 1.6 (4 Stars)
Deathmatch Classic (5 Stars)
Ricochet (2 Stars)

Counter Strike is the game that started it all. It is enjoyable to play and the graphics are fairly decent. If you want the most killer graphics then i suggest you get the Counter Strike Source Package. Condition Zero is a separate game not an addition pack. The reason i gave it 4 1/2 stars is because I have a slight problem of when i let go of a direction button (to go forward, backward, sideways). When i let go it keeps going for less than a second. Day Of Defeat 1.6 Is fun but some of the servers lag a lot. Deathmatch Classic is a really funny game. This is really old and it is funny to watch all these people walk around with frozen fake faces. Ricochet is an odd game of jumping on these pads and knocking people of the pads to me its pointless. All these games use the Steam platform which can be tedious. DEFINATLY DO NOT!!!!! BUY THIS GAME USED.It will not work. Also when you choose to join the 2000+ servers on CS 1.6 sometimes there is a server that has all these dumb pointless sounds that you have to download to join the server. Overall a neat game, even though it is old there are still tons of people who play it!

Mafia II Review

Mafia II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mafia 2 is one of those games that's not for the impatient. This game is not a GTA clone and it's not as polished as GTA4 gameplay-wise. (Rockstar made huge amounts of improvements throughout the series. Sometimes the more you make, the more you can polish/improve something, which is the case for the GTA series.)

What you should expect is a linear game with an awesome story, looks, voice acting, themes, settings, and music. It's more like an interactive movie but you get to decide what to do first. The sandbox style many people have in their minds is not what the developers focused on.
I won't go into details why the developers didn't go all GTA during development *cough*dev: STORY = VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT*cough*, you'll find out quite easily once you're in the game.

The main problem this game has is how the content was utilized. The developers created the beautiful and detailed city of Empire Bay but didn't squeeze every last bit of opportunity/fun out of it. There are no side-missions and nothing interesting to do (stores get old fast) after you're done with the story. I was really disappointed when I found out the game offers nothing else, having collectibles don't cut it. 2K Czech was either too lazy or ran out of time to add more hours of fun to it (but the game was delayed already). I'd give it a 2/5 for replay value.

It's relatively short when compared to other great full-priced SP games (around 8-10 hours on HARD). I recommend everyone to play it on hard if you actually wanna have a little bit of fun, otherwise it will get boring and you'll be able to burn through the story very fast.

And Jimmy's Vendetta? It should've been included in the game. It's definitely not worth the 10 extra dollars since most of the content are recycled (ex. Jimmy has Vito's body, vehicle theft pictures are hidden in the main game's files) and the missions are all dull, boring, and they repeat themselves.

For 50 dollars? Heck no. 40? Sure.

I regret paying for the collector's edition.
No refunds either :(

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (Jewel Case) Review

Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw a copy of this on my local BestBy store for $10.Seeing that I got a pre-paid gift card on me, I decided to buy this and play it for awhile. This is an "Encore" published version, so it doesn't have all the paper manuals of the original UbiSoft version. The manuals are in the PDF format and is inside the disc.Version number of the game is 1.03 I believe, but the latest is 1.06 on the web.I have never played the original version, but I can say that this is a very polished game, with smooth gameplay and nice graphics. It crashed 2 times so far when loading, so that's not too bad.My system is more than adequate for this game and produces nice framerates (it's currently running on wide-screen @ 1680x1050,16:10, max resolution).I didn't try out the multi-player system yet, as I'm not quite seasoned enough.

For those of you who thinks this is a typical Unreal/Doom type FPS, think again. This is a more realistic tactical FPS that requires squad-mates and cover system to survive.I actually like this better, as it's a lot like Mass-Effect and Gears of War.I end of using my right-mouse button (cover) more than the left-mouse button (fire weapon). The big thing I don't like is that the weapons are pretty much the same, as there are some really redundant guns.I would prefer a system where the guns are more unique and hence, more special. For the price I paid, I've been spending hours trying to perfect my play. This is definitely worth a price (I last saw the original UbiSoft version selling for $7)!

System: Intel E8200 (3.0GHz)/2GB RAM/ATI 4380/Windows XP.

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Review

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From the makers of the ever popular HALF LIFE, here is a nice commando shoot-em-up role-playing game. People who have played HALF LIFE will find the gameplay similar insofar as weapons control / toggling & movement. This is a good thing as I always found HL to be one of the most straightforward games in that regard.

Instead of Marine Recon & aliens, in this game you are matched up against an array of terrorists. You are also not alone this time around;each scenario gives you the chance to be on an anti-terrorism bomb squad or hostage rescue team.

You get a set amount of $$ for each encounter, depending on how well you do.This money serves as the funding for your unit, and with it you can acquire team members, weapons and equipment. The better you perform, the better personnel & toys you're able to buy.

A nice feature of the game is that you're also able to custom make your own game.Want to have a virtual army of commandos go up against an army of terrorists? No problem! Want to be a terrorist instead of one of the good guys?No problem! Just be careful:if you get "caught" by yourself in one of these scenarios you will be taken out like a torch in a tropical storm.

While the game is fun, it does get a bit redundant after awhile. There are two basic missions:find and defuse a bomb (or kill the terrorists before they can plant it) or rescue hostages (or kill all the terrorists). While the maps change, your primary missions do not.People expecting an endless montage of missions similar to HALF LIFE might be disappointed.

Also, I do have a few minor critiques of the game. For one, your team dresses differently. Some dress like Navy SEALS while others are European anti-terrorism personnel. Not only is this unrealistic, but it's also distracting.Sometimes you can't tell your own men from the terrorists.

Secondly, the voices are the same whether you play a terrorist or a commando on the custom game.Somehow I can't imagine a terrorist saying "Yes Sir" or "Lead the way, sir" through a radio.Perhaps I'm being overly-picky here.

The single best feature of the game is what is known as DELETED SCENES.I didn't know what it was at first and almost didn't download it.I'm glad I did!It is a separate set of 10 or so missions. These are much closer to the HALF LIFE feel as you have a LOT of hit-points and you also work alone (for the most part) in the majority of the scenarios. These missions are very cool, not redundant & they're worth the price of this game all by themselves!

All in all this is worth picking up if you like role-playing shoot-em-ups.While it can't really compare to HL (except for DELETED SCENES) it's still worth picking up.For beginners I would recommend starting out with sniper rifles as you can pick off terrorists from afar without getting shot-up yourself. The range of the remainder of the weapons leave you very exposed to incoming bullets.

Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II Review

Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since it is the number one consideration I make in choosing if I'm going to buy a game, I have to talk about the copy protection.Yes it's not the game, but it is a part of the overall product. If you can't play the game, then it's of no use to you.Dawn of War 2 is more intrusive than the CD keys of the old days. Those keys were perfectly reasonable and fair, but nowadays I can't understand why companies punish their paying customers with annoying activations.I purchased Max Payne 2 and the protection couldn't recognize my CD drive so I couldn't use it; their response was tough luck.I have almost entirely stopped buying PC games because the protection adds risk.

That said, the protection scheme that Relic went with is at least not as bad as it could be.You have to install Steam by Valve software and there is a CD Key too, but as far as I can tell Steam isn't evil and it doesn't do anything to screw with your system. You do need to have an Internet connection the first time you install the game, but after that you can put everything in offline mode and not connect. While this isn't as bad as it could have been, if you're a US Army trooper stationed in a country without access to the Internet to validate your copy or if you just don't have a connection, you're out of luck. You also have to have a Games For Windows Live account, but you can create an offline one. When playing single player it's slightly annoying to be asked/reminded multiple times if you want to be in online mode.

So, on to the game. The first thing you'll notice is that this is NOT Dawn of War.The first game was kind of like StarCraft or most RTS games where you build a base, then units, then fight it out.At least in single player, Dawn of War 2 is more like those StarCraft levels where you had a small group of soldiers and your goal was to reach the other side of the map.Whether you like this change or not, well that's a matter of taste.I kind of like not worrying about the base development. At the same time, it does make the game a little less interesting because you lose that base defense and resource management aspect.

The characters are great. You get a little bit of RPG angle to things because you can customize the armor, weapon, and special bonus that each squad gets. This isn't all that deep, sort of like X-Men Legends 2 character tweaking. There is an interesting touch where you can gain certain bonus skills if you reach milestones adding points in certain areas. For example, if you add points to the scout's "will" (mana) attribute you can get a skill to not drain energy if concealed while standing still. You get the idea.I liked it since you get to choose whether to round out your squad or take a risk and get some benefits for focusing in on one or two areas.

Dreadnoughts are back and just as fun as ever. They'll still pick up the bad guy sometimes and toss them around the map.Plus, they don't need cover; they ARE cover. In single player, he's about useless until you get the "self repair" ability.Unlike your normal characters, he won't heal over time.Once you get that ability, he'll can fix himself and becomes a major player. You can revive fallen comrades if you have at least one guy left, but I couldn't ever get him to revive anybody so it's probably a limit to balance the abilities of this unit type.

Controls are tight and the characters will generally do what you want them to.I occasionally had problems selecting all units at once, though.Graphics look good.Sounds fit the game nicely and the voice acting is quite good. You've got a good story and entertaining Multiplayer.Overall though, to me it just didn't meet what I was expecting.I do enjoy it, but I'd have rather had more of an enhanced version of the previous game with some levels like this thrown in.As with the first game, you only get Space Marines campaigns.Too bad.I probably won't stick around too long after I finish the single player campaign, but I'll have fun until then.

This package is perfect because you can import your DOW2 campaign into CR and start off with your earned skills and some of your equipment.DOW2 and CR differ signifigantly in their mechanics.DOW2 is easier; you have a lot more chance to play random missions to level up or for goodies and supplies boost everybody's special equipment.Chaos has fewer random missions and throws in tasks that leave you more pure or more tainted by Chaos. It's an interesting idea, but does make things annoying at times when you have to use a specific character or replay a mission just to avoid corruption.Supplies are type specific so you get fewer uses. Both games are fun.

Check the system requirements well before you buy it.It requires significantly more power than Dawn of War did.You also need a decent video card.My system beats the suggested specs, I have an Athlon 5600+ CPU, 3 GB of RAM, and a GeForce 8400 GS video card and it's a little jerky at times. The game has a cool feature that rates your setup and can automatically configure for best performance. My card apparently isn't up to snuff even at the lowest settings, so I can still play but it thinks I'd lag out of online play.Just as well, I have no interest in that.

I did find one trick that can help a little in Vista.Right-click the Steam icon (since Steam has to run to play the game) and choose Properties. Now go to to the Compatibility tab and check to Disable desktop composition. This will shut down the Aero features and should give a little bit of a graphics boost. If you have a nVida card you can go into nVidia Control Panel, view Advanced Settings, manage 3D settings, and change the "Texture filtering - Quality" to "Performance".Do a search online if you need more detailed instructions how to change that setting. Those seem to have helped a bit for my setup.Really though, you need a decent card if you want to play online or if you care about it being super pretty.

Left 4 Dead Review

Left 4 Dead
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Original L4D review of Nov 18, 2008

'Left 4 Dead' is a great new 4 man co-op or single player FPS game from VALVE.

The GAME:

This game is a 4 player journey of survival; it can be played as single player (with 3 computer comrades) or with 3 other people on-line. The trek begins in any of 4 different locations and ends in another part of town with an extraction to safety if you survive. (or a nice mention, in memoriam, if you don't)

The Pros:

1.)Great graphics and audio. The atmosphere is very dusky and eerie; lighting is sparse in buildings except for your flashlight (kind of reminds me of 'Doom 3'). Creeping into a pitch black room with only a flashlight to find it either empty, full of zombies or even worse, harbouring a super mutant is visceral to say the least.

2.)The action is fast paced and hectic; there is not a lot of down time between one attack and the next. Attacks either by a hoard of undead or a super mutant comes at a fairly regular clip. Half the fun here is trying to find out what weakness the monsters have and what works best against them.

3.)Weaponry come in the form of guns (shotgun, sniper rifle, automatic machine gun and pistols) explosives consist of pipe bombs and Molotov fire bombs.

4.)You can start the game from the beginning any one of four campaigns OR at the beginning of any chapter within a campaign. Each section of the game is reasonably short, so you don't have to redo the entire game if you have to shut down for a while [see Cons: 2.) below]. Also, if your team dies while playing, you restart from the last 'safe-house' you made it to.

5.)The game resets weapons, monsters, and health packs for every new game; so each game is slightly different than the last, although played over the same geographic area.

6.)Certain 'achievements' are awarded throughout the game for accomplishing certain things. I initially thought these were a perk or upgrade, but now I don't think so...they just recognize certain 'accomplishments' i.e. setting a 'tank' afire or pushing away a 'hunter', and many others.
They add absolutely nothing to the game play and they were not available in the demo.

7.)You have the ability to set up a game from the Undead point of view; haven't tried this yet.

8.)A couple of nice on-line game features:

a.] you can change the difficulty setting ANYTIME; great if it's too easy or if your taking a continual pounding

b.] if you have a player that is 'disruptive' to the team play, you can kick that player out of the game by simply taking a vote among the other three on-line players. (I was surprised that this actually happened a couple of times while I was playing)

c.)And finally, a truly great feature; You can 'Take a Break' from an on-line game by pressing ESC> Take a Break> anytime while playing; great for a call to the BR or to take a phone call. When you 'Take a Break' you go 'Idle' while your away and your computer player takes over until you get back into the game (by pressing the left mouse key).

The Cons: (all minor)

1.)A fairly linear game; only a little room to travel off the prescribed path. Yet, in retrospect, having played this game many times, it would be difficult for this game to function properly with a 'open world', given the fighting style required for on-line co-op; each segment is a fairly short 'meat' run from point 'A' to point 'B'.

2.)No game saves...none; and this is understandable from the 4 player on-line game. However with the single player game, the chapters aren't terribly long BUT they do require a degree of concentration and work to finish, especially on the higher difficulty levels. And somehow losing all your hard fought gains if you have to leave the game unexpectedly, seems a little unfair; you'll understand more clearly what I mean once you begin to play.

3.)The AI of your comrades in the single person game needs one small modification; your buddies will guard you, heal you and stay near you BUT, they won't pick up the extra pipe bombs or Molotov bombs that often sit there before them. And it would be really helpful in the single person game-play if they did, especially on advanced and expert.

Suggestions:

I can not stress how much headphones/microphone add to the enjoyment of playing this game on-line; especially with communicating with your on-line playing partners. If you can, try playing with a headset, you won't believe the difference.

Conclusion:

A new FPS that requires 4 player co-operation (in both single and on-line play) to be successful. You may get away with a little 'individuality' on 'Easy',but on 'Normal', 'Advanced' or 'Expert' forget about it; if you don't travel and fight as a pack, your toast.

The on-line co-op version is one of the greatest games EVER...IF played with the 4 players who have an understanding of the game concepts and are willing to work together. And that being said, having a maximum of 4 players for on-line play is probably the perfect number; 3 would not be enough to fend off the hoards (except on easy maybe) and with 5 players you'd be getting in each others way.

The game chapters are fairly short and there are no game saves. However the game play is intense and visceral and you do tend to become wrapped up in the action that is taking place around you.

And finally, this is one of those rare games that I just don't ever get tired ofplaying, (at least, with the on-line game)...and a game with this quality has to be in the running for game of the year.
4 1/2 to 5 Stars

"Crash Course"...some comments

First impressions from a co-op viewpoint...initially disappointing, but better since they've updated it (see comments below).

A very short game...maybe 30 minutes or so consisting of only two segments. The map is mostly made up of streets littered with abandoned cars and trucks, and the buildings are mostly warehouses. This added map, although playable as single player or co-op, was primarily intended I believe, for Versus players.

This map has improved since its original debut; updates have apparently removed a lot of the excess ammo and guns, making it a better challenge.

The finale...interesting and takes some planning (although the final run to the rescue vehicle is extremely easy). Which leads to the one drawback in this new map...if you all die in the finale, you must restart at the last safehouse...about 15 minutes of travel to the ending.

Conclusion:
Now that the game (with the removal of all the extra guns and ammo) has become more of a challenge, I'll probably play this map a bit more...too bad they didn't make it a full map like the others (probably didn't want to divert too much attention away from the upcoming L4D2).Addendum: April 22/09

"Survival"... some comments,

Well the much anticipated update for Left 4 Dead has finally arrived. The new game is call 'Survival' and it IS aptly named. There are several new individual mods to this new game that use slight variations from some of the different sections of the 4 established games i.e. No Mercy, Death Toll, Dead Air and Blood Harvest. There is one brand new locale called 'Last Stand'; its setting is at a lighthouse and it's probably the most difficult game of the lot.

Rather than a prolonged campaign these games are very short; and make no mistake about it, you are going to die. The challenge here is to see how long you can last; 4 minutes gets you a bronze medal, 7 minutes a silver and you get a gold medal if you last for ten minutes. Unlike the regular game, there is NO option for easy, normal etc. difficulty; just the one standard for everyone; "brutal" might be a good name for this newness addition.

In the regular game you get attacked by hordes of zombies, with an occasional smoker, hunter or tank thrown in, but usually not all at once. However in this game, you get attacked by ALL types of infected, all at once. In addition, there is no long stretch to outrun a tank; not that that matters, as you are fighting the horde, smokers and hunters the same time as your trying to fight off the tank...yup, just about impossible.

Impression:

Intense...yes. Gut wrenching...yes. FUN...hmmm, I'm not sure. One of the great strengths of on-line Left 4 Dead was the co-op fighting style needed to get through the advanced and expert campaigns. Here in 'Survival', co-op is needed but somehow, after a battle that begins with about 1 minute of 'easy', all chaos breaks-out. And because your being attacked from all side by ALL types of infected, the co-op gaming style, that made the regular L4D sooo enjoyable, is gone; gone because at this point, it becomes a game of personal survival, rather than the group...and that's the real shortcoming of this update.

And finally, I could play the regular on-line L4D for hours and never (well almost never) get tired. But with this game, I found that not only did it take quite a lot of time/effort to strategically set up gas cans, propane tanks etc. in the area you want to TRY to defend, but also, that after 3 or 4 tries I wasfrustrated, weary and eager to return to the regular game.

I must admit, in fairness, that I've never been a great fan of time based/get the highest score, type games, so I'm probably a little prejudiced. I'll continue to 'give this a go' for a while; maybe it'll turn out to be a great game. But somehow, I think I'd have liked a new regular campaign map better.

Half-Life 2: Episode Pack Review

Half-Life 2: Episode Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've played Half-Life 2, then you've probably at the very least heard of HL2: Episode One and Two by now. Its pretty hard to finish Half-Life 2 and not want more, and thankfully Valve has supplied us with two short but exciting extensions to the Half-Life universe without making everyone wait 5+ years for a Half-Life 3.

In case you've never played Half-Life 2, these episodes take place right where the original leaves off, and it would be advisable to purchase the original game first so you know what's going on. The best way to do that is through the Orange Box available for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, since you get these two episodes as well as the original and two other great games in the set for a good price.

And one more thing before I begin; I am not taking Steam into account on these reviews. I don't particularly relish the idea of having an internet program that locks the games I'm supposed to own in the closet and ultimately tells me whether or not I can play them or how many computers I can play them on, but I haven't had any major problems with Steam yet. It's something you should be aware of though if you're buying any PC versions of Half-Life games; you are required to "activate" them online at installation or you aren't able to play. It also appears that, for this particular set, the games must be fully downloaded from Steam when you insert this disc, rather than installing from there and simply patching, which would be much faster. If the idea of Steam bothers you, get a console version of the Orange Box if that's available to you.

Now, onto the episodes themselves... they're fantastic! Episode One picks up right at the "OMG what happens next!?" ending of the original and lays the foundation for an interesting new story arc. This episode features some slightly improved graphics and great facial animation, and manages to retain most of the orignal flavor of the original with some excellent story-telling scenes and action. The entire voice cast (of the characters still alive) makes a return too.

Unfortunately, while great, I didn't feel that Episode One lived up to it's predecessor. It was short and way too easy. There was also a point in the game where you are required to escort groups of citizens across a hot zone to a train station. I found this to be the worst part of the game since it required you to backtrack several times (something the original never required) and escort 2 or 3 citizens at a time. Plus, the boss battle at the end was just like a certain battle toward the end of the original HL2, except you're only fighting one (instead of like 5 at once) and there's plenty of cover (also unlike earlier), so I found it to be a real breeze and a poor choice for a final boss fight. I loved the character development Alyx underwent in this episode however, and I love the little details the game presents, like Alyx squinting and covering her eyes with her hand if you shine your flashlight in her face. Things like that go a long way to add a realistic feel to the experience.

I hate to use the term "epic," but it's really the only way to describe the next episode. Ep. 2 is a departure from the previous HL2 games as it doesn't take place in City 17 at all. You'll visit lots of places you've not seen before, like an antlion den, a mine, and a forest. I've heard some people complain that this episode doesn't contain the feel of the previous installments, but I found the change welcome and exciting. At the beginning of this episode and throughout, this episode further develops your female sidekick Alyx as a character and gets you more attached to her. IMHO, Alyx is the best female lead character I've ever seen in a video game. By this point in the series, I actually CARED what happened to her, so when she went though a couple of terrible experiences, I felt sorrow, anger, remorse, etc. Pretty amazing that somebody can make you care for something that doesn't really exist! The ending was amazing too; it'll really make you want to get Ep. 3 the day it comes out.

So in other words, if you played HL2 and enjoyed it, these episodes are successful at extending the excitement. You'll really be missing out on a great gaming experience if you pass these games by.

Fallout New Vegas Review

Fallout New Vegas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
War...War never changes. But Fallout has over the course of its long-winded history.

It started as a spiritual sequel to 'Wasteland', CRPG that started 'Post-Apocalyptic' gameplay back in 1988 by Interplay, whose division Black Isle is behind seminal CRPG classic such as 'Baldur's Gate' and yes, you guessed it, 'Fallout' and 'Fallout 2'.

After Interplay was disintegrated, some of the people went to Bioware, some of them went on to found Troika, talented but unfortunate developer who met its demise after three original and interesting but very buggy CRPG with dissimal sales. Some of them went on to found Obsidian, yet another talented but somewhat disappointing developer whose track record includes 'Knights of the Old Republic 2','Neverwinter Nights 2', 'Alpha Protocol' and upcoming 'Dungeon Siege 3'.

Why am I reciting a history lesson here? When Bethesda acquired the right for 'Fallout' IP from Interplay and released its biggest financial success yet with 'Fallout 3', fans were divided into two distinctive factions and has been feuding over which is better.

Faction Red: Bethesda ruined the memory of the greatest CRPG of all time by dumbing down everything we loved about our precious franchise. It's 'Oblivion with guns'.

Faction Blue: Bethesda successfully resuscitated the dead franchise by streamlining many archaic elements and implementing new refreshing elements. It retains all the core elements from 'Fallout'.We love it.

I personally love all of them and none of them are perfect to feud over petty differences in semantics.

After court-feuding over who's got the right to the entire 'Fallout' series, Bethesda settled with the right to all future single-player Fallout game and right to license the right to Interplay to the development of 'Fallout MMORPG'.So both 'Fallout 4' and 'Fallout Online' are coming; both will be published by Bethesda and 'Fallout 4' will be also developed by Bethesda.

So with the help of creative minds behind the original 2D isometric Fallout games using the same engine and costruction set Bethesda did for FO3, can Obsidian right the wrong by Bethesda?(Bethesda still owns the IP and publishes it.)That has been the question by Faction Red.

If you are a fan of 'Fallout 3', rest assured FONV is exactly like FO3 with nothing taken away with some newly improved elements added. You will feel right at home with the game.Control, menu, movement, combat, Pipboy and VATS are all identical. What's added are new perks system, new aiming system and new NPC companion command system.

Unlike FO3, there are tons more factions now in play and you can choose to side with certain faction with consequences.Faction dynamics play much more intimate and important role, and are tied directly to the choices you have to make (think Morrowind). You cannot possibly satisfiy everyone in FONV.You'll have to actually play multiple playthrough to experience everything.Choices you make will definitely make the differrence in character interaction and will give out whopping 27 unique important quests all littered with different endings with each ending giving you various permutations (think Gothic and The Witcher), unlike the cookie-cutter, same-difference 5 endings FO3 offered.Every time you make someone beneficiary, you will make someone else unhappy. All of your choices will resullt in some type of consequences. There is no more good and evil morality play here. This time, it is a wild wild west.Everyone is a cutthroat. In fact, style of the game is reminiscent of old western movie and FO3 rolled into one.

Dialogues are much more sarcastic and darkly humorous.Voice-works are well-done by many celebrities.Characters are wackier.General tone of the game is morally even murkier and overall darker, albeit humorous on par with the first two games (especially Fallout 2).

Soundtrack once again retains the signature feel of the series by utilizing slew of retro 40s and 50s classic pop music.Orchestral score is once again done by Inon Zur.

While level-cap has been increased to 30, leveling up needs more attention because you cannot be a jack of all trade in FONV; especially in light of new 'Hard-core' mode that is included in the game. You need to hunt and cook / harvest / steal and eat, you need to drink and you need to sleep to survive or pay the consequence. You cannot carry infinite amount of ammo either. You can freely choose whether you want to play as 'Hard-core'.

You can now mod your own weapons on the work bench with more variety and freedom than you were able to in FO3.

Graphics are still competent but are aging fast now.The general tone of the color scheme is changed from green to orange. While Obsidian claims graphic is slightly improved, I think graphically everything looks little bit uglier overall, probably stemming from mismatched color schemes throughout the environment.Sometimes, the world feels like messy crayon artwork from kindergarten wall. But the world is much livelier and you now see some level of active civilization represented by glowing neons of Vegas Strip.

So it sounds like I am trashing FO3 and praising FONV to no end.Not so fast.FO 3 is still a great game but I like FONV slightly better in terms of the improved gameplay. However, FO3 is much better in depth of contents, presentation and storytelling.Morrowind and Oblivion is still my king of CRPG with much stronger community support. So what is wrong with the game?

Welcome to the bugfest 2010.It's a grand feast of technical mess; frame rate stuttering issue, game crashing and freezing, characters stuck in the environment, disappearing act of characters and items (even save-game files make the cameos in the act) are some of the widely reported bugs across the all platforms.Yes, CRPG and nonlinear, free-formed, open-ended game in gigantic scope as big as FONV will always be buggier than linear, focused games like Halo and Modern Warfare due to virtually impossible task of QA stemming from endless in-game possibilities, and yes, nothing gamebreaking,But there are tons of minor glitches that are annoying and tiresome when you play the game that gives you anywhere from 40-200 hours and upward. This is the buggiest Fallout entry.

Here's a helpful site to alleviate your potential problems.

[...]

Another thing is everything in FONV is awfully familiar with FO3, not necessarily a bad thing in itself.Just don't expect the same kind of awe-inducing wow moment like when you came out of Vault 101 for the first time in FO3 or cinematic end-battle.

If you are not a fan of CRPG or you hated FO3, there's nothing new for you to see here.Just like FO3, this is not a FPS, even with enhanced aiming mechanics.Hit points and damage are governed by your stats. This game will be just as boring as FO3 to you.

If you are a fan of open-world game such as GTA, be warned; FONV is not a open-world action game.It is open-ended, nonlinear, free-formed CRPG that focuses on traversing and finding new places, engaging with different characters, performing quests, dungeon-crawling and "role-playing".There are tons of small, interesting and quite often excellent depiction of personal conflicts and backstories, but there's no 'save the humanity' type of grand plot and cinematic cutscenes between each level.

And if you think 'Borderlands', which is by the way solid and entertaining action game, is better than FO3, stay away from FONV.Customization of stats, leveling up, armors and weapons by themselves do not make action game like 'Borderlands' a RPG.You'll be wondering why your excellent marksmanship repeatedly proven via endless hours of online multiplayer session is not effective in Nevada / Mojave wasteland.

Last, but not least, PC version of FONV utilizes Steam, which is the most popular DRM and the least intrusive DRM currently available in the market. It offers many incentive, convenience and great pricing for older games compared to other DRM, but Steam is still DRM.Convenience of not having to worry about the actual gamedisc by using Steam is nothing compared to not having any DRM so we can install the game and put away our game for display and collection. We won't be worrying about gamedisc if DRM doesn't check the disc every five second during the gameplay if the disc is authentic in the first place.Dual release with non-Steam version after initial release or guaranteed future DRM deactivation patch will surely pacify every morally just legitimate paying customers who genuinely want to support developers but are turned off by hands-on DRM.

So why did I still choose PC version over console version?;GECK, easier patching and community support, because I expected that game like FONV would always be buggy. To Bethesda's credit, the game looks and plays exactly the same on either PC or console, barring framerate, graphics and resolution, so the experience will be identical unlike other CRPGs like 'Dragon Age: Origins', 'Two Worlds', 'Sacred 2', 'Divinity II', and 'Risen' on consoles to name a few.

But to Steam's credit, it's 'one-time only' activation through Steam and it doesn't require for you to keep the disc running in your optical drive once the game is installed. There's no constant Internet connection requirement while you play your game and there's no installation limit. And if you are into social-networking aspects of Steam, you won't have much problems. But if you are turned off by anything other than disc-based DRM, you are warned.I found myself grudgingly and reluctantly giving up to the spell of Fallout series this time but this is only...Read more›

Just Cause 2 Review

Just Cause 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just Cause 2 is about the most fun that I have had with a PC game in a while. The graphics are absolutely amazing, view distance, dynamic environments. The look of this game is everything of Far Cry 2, with even more gasps of awesome.

You play the part of Rico Rodriguez, a CIA agent who is about the most physics breaking mass of testosterone I have ever seen. You are dropped into a large, open country to drop an evil dictator out of power by working with several different factions. To do this you have mass amounts of vehicles at your disposal, a multitude of guns and explosives and most importantly, a grappling hook and parachute.

This last part is the best part of the game.Using the hook, you can climb objects, access flying vehicles from the ground, pull people out of air and even tie object together.Tie someone to a barrel and blast the thing into space to see some real fun.

Initially, the game did not impress me.The story and mission parts of the game reminded me of Far Cry 2.Lots of repetition and little development. Then I hit a point where I slammed my car into another car and flew them both off a cliff.Seeing myself falling I decided to use my grappling hook to escape, but only managed to snare another bystander. In the end I opened a parachute and glided to safety all while watching one of the most insane wrecks ever. The game is full of stuff like this.Tie a motorcycle to a car and use it as a wrecking ball.Rope a plane and ride it around just because you can.So many times I found myself asking "Man wouldn't it be cool if I could to this?"Moments later, I did.

At this point I found that the point of the plot and game is actually secondary to the extreme sandbox fun in there. At points of my new found enjoyment, my wife actually thought I lost my mind due to the non-stop laughter and childlike joy radiating out of me.The fun factor of this game is higher than anything I can imagine playing lately.Honestly, this game is pure sandbox first, and an actual game third. Also, your destructive acts are rewarded with guns and vehicles. How many games honestly reward your childlike explosive needs?

As for the lack of XP support, well we saw this coming. Not many people cried that Halo didn't work on windows 3.1, so we really just need to move on here.DirectX 10 will simply not work on XP, and the look and feel of this game is something so amazing that you just need the best to make it happen.

If you are on the fence about getting yet another FPS in a time where they are roaming the earth, get off on this side now. This is not yet another modern day shooter remake, nor are you wandering yet another WW2 battlefield, this is something truly special.
