Lost Vikings 2 Review

Lost Vikings 2
Average Reviews:

This is a strategy game where you control three vikings, as well as other characters, who are lost in time. Each character has different abilities and you must use them together to get through underground maze-like levels. The learning curve is reasonable, so you'll be challenged without getting stuck on the first level. Gameplay is innovative, the characters are unique, and new elements being constantly introduced keep it from getting repetive. Buy this game! I guarentee you will become addicted to this game.

Shogun: Total War Warlord Edition Review

Shogun: Total War Warlord Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of the original Shogun with its Risk-like turn-based strategy combined with real-time battles, so I rushed right out and bought a copy of the Warlord Edition (the expansion is also supposed to be available for download at a reduced price to those who own the original). The Warlord Edition is well worth the $..., however. There are several new troop types, including the Mongol hords -- the firebombers are nasty little dudes -- and the new Japanese troops include the mystical battlefield Ninjas and devistating sword saint, a one-person wreaking crew.
A couple of things I really like about the expansion: no more "landscape drift," your camera stays where you point it, and several new campaign scenarios. Under the old game, you basically had one starting point for a full campaign, with Japan basically divided equally between seven clans. Now, you have the option of four different starting points on a full campaign, including one with the Mongols invading Japan, and you also have four shorter "historical campaigns," in which you take over a clan during a period in Japan's history.
A couple of minor annoyances: The manual is still not very good. Get old Prima strategy guide if you're unfamiliar with Shogun. Also, in an apparent attempt to make the game historically accurate, not all troop types are available for all campaigns. For example, warrior monks and the rifle troops are not availablewhen you're playing the Warlord Campaign vs. the Mongols.
But overall, this is a very worthy addition to my favorite game ever.

Lords Of The Realm II Review

Lords Of The Realm II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This certainly isn't the most exciting game I've played. I had thought it rather simple, until last night when I was explaining it to my roommate who was amazed at the level of detail you could go to. (I don't think he had ever seen any of the Sims games.)

The game is one of strategy, and you'll only enjoy it if you're a medieval buff. In the most general terms, you must conquer all of the counties within a country and become King. There are two smaller kingdoms, and then you hit the real ones: Ireland, England, France, Germany, Italy, and an area they refer to as The Crusades. In order to conquer the counties, you need to manage several things: taxes, weapon building, army building and maneuvering, forestry, castle building and a number of other specifics to build your own budding empire. You need to keep the people that live in your county happy, and this means that they need to eat, and that the appropriate level of taxation exists. If they are unhappy enough, they will revolt, and flee - and you will have lost your county.

When it comes to battles - and there are many - you can choose to either direct the skirmishes yourself (as most do, I'm sure), or in the interest of time you can "autocalc" the battle. The computer then looks at both armies, and determines which should win based on the combatants. For example, if one army contains one hundred peasants, one hundred swordsmen, and one hundred knights; and they face an army with one hundred swordsmen, one hundred macemen, and one hundred knights, the second army will win easily. Why? peasants wield pitchforks.

Product Description:
Lords of the Realm II is a mixture of turn-based county and economic management and real-time combat. As the game begins, the king has died and 5 nobles (including yourself) are vying for control of the realm, including the noble Baron, the headstrong Knight, the ice princess The Countess, and the backstabbing Bishop. You have to hold on to your counties by building larger castles and keeping the peasantry happy and well-fed. When you engage your enemy in battle is when the real fun starts. You are given a Warcraft-type view of the battlefield with the units in your army and have to either get them to retreat (a rarity) or kill every last one of the little buggers. In a siege, you can end the battle by capturing the enemy's flag or dispatching all of your opponents soldiers to the great big Realm in the sky.

Panzer General Review

Panzer General
Average Reviews:

Panzer General is one of the war games released by SSI in the mid 90's based on those hex mapped games you may have seen people playing in the 80's.I had an uncle into those earlier table top games, and I could NEVER figure out just what he was doing.
Panzer General is the computerized version of that, and with its intuitive interface and easy to understand controls, this game is untold hours of fun and stratagem.
I have played it over and again, from different starting points, and you never play the same game twice even if you come back and fo it all over again. This is not only fun war gaming (Think Advanced Wars without the cartoon character commanders) but it is infinitely replayable.
I thought this one had been lost to the advance of OS - as in it doesnt play well in XP, or Vista, but I found a little program to create a better dosbox, and with it, this game has found new life in my house. If you want to try it out, you can get it here:

I would HIGHLY suggest, if you havent tried this one out, do it.Panzer General is a MUST play game for strategy fans.

This game is superb.Great graphics, good story line, gorgeous CGI and in-game cut scenes, outstanding soundtrack, the list goes on.However, the Limited Edition is not so limited. The soundtrack for the game comes on a DVD, which as far as I know can only be listened to through the TV and DVD player. The disc also contains some interesting and entertaining artwork and game movies.I was unhappy that the soundtrack was included on the DVD and not a seperate CD.The rest of the DVD is nice though. The previous editions of HOMM, 3 and 4, are included on a single disc, which is great. However, no manual or monster chart or anything is included.Nothing else of the sort is included in the Limited Edition for HOMM 5 either.Unless this is a must have, stay with the regular edition. But by all means, get some form of this game as soon as you can!You will not be disappointed!

Sid Meier's Civilization Chronicles Review

Sid Meier's Civilization Chronicles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This collection is a great one - it's like buying the trilogy of your favorite movie series or buying all the episodes for Star Wars.

That means that there are exactly two reasons why anybody would buy this package.

The first reason is the most obvious: you don't have any (or most) of the titles and/or you are looking to learn more about the history of this classic game.

In that light, this package offers everything you can possibly buy with the Civilization title on it except for the very latest expansion packs to Civ 4.(There are nine titles here!)

If you have never seen the roots of Civilization (there were versions released for game consoles, as well), you will get your chance here. And again, if you love Civ but don't have the "not for sale in stores" versions of older Civ titles, here you go.

The second reason somebody would buy this package is simply because they are a diehard fan of Civilization and want it all.

My comparison is to movie trilogies insomuch as they typically offer slightly upgraded versions of the products released many years ago, thus increasing both the nostalgia and the fervor. Some titles have essentially been patched to perform decently on newer computer systems - reminds me of the Atari Classic Games release a few years ago where they enabled the old games to play on Windows XP, for example.

This package meets your needs if you want it all as you get every Civilization title (expanded or not) to play on today's current computer systems.More importantly for the diehard fan are the collectible items inside.

There is also a DVD that is pretty cool, I think. It is essentially the "Making of..." feature that you find with movies, and because Civilization is a classic, this "Making of..." will appeal to those who have been with Civilization for a long time.

There is also the card game (which I never got into because I'd rather sit in front of my computer and have it do most of the work). This game is most exciting when you play it with your friends, in my opinion. My challenge was finding even one friend who loved Civ as much as I to play this with me, but all those online features really drew me away from the cards (if I wanted to play multi-player).The card game is still fun, though - it can let you interact with your friends more intimately.

And, of course, the book...

This is more than just a game manual or a strategy guide - this is the bible (as they tried to make it out to be).But it is basically the DVD documentary in written form, albeit nicely done.It is a great collector's item as it shows you a lot of the concepts (new and old) and some of the "mind of Sid," as well as the chronology/history of it all (like changes between the titles).Good content if you are into that sort of thing.

I really think that the collectors will appreciate this offering the most.I can't imagine turning people on to the Civilization culture by introducing them to the older titles and then having them work their ways up to Civ IV.

In reality, if you are a Civ history/culture buff, this is your $65 baby.

I also noticed that for about $91 you can get EVERY title ever made for Civilization - that means you just add the new Civ IV: Warlords expansion pack to the order.

For me, personally, I own Civs 1-4 on one format or another, and I have spent almost $200 so far.I thought Civ 3 was perfect for gamers like me (people without advanced computer degrees but who love to customize), but nowadays the Civ titles are increasing the gap between the yuppies and the computer geeks.(I am a computer geek, but on the lower end.)

Buy this if you want it all (in a nice box to boot). If you aren't that way, just buy Civilization 3 Complete - it's got everything you'd love about Civilization and the price is delectable.

StarCraft Expansion Pack: Brood War Review

StarCraft Expansion Pack: Brood War
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How often have you gotten an "expansion pack" only to be rewarded with lackluster efforts from a development team that has simply moved on from the title? Brood War delivers almost an entirely new game forless than the original cost.As expansion packs go, this one is about asclose to perfect as I've seen.
In addition to ~30 new missions (with eachof the three familiar races from StarCraft), you get more multiplayer mapsand new units to explore and enjoy (roughly 2 per race). In addition tonew units, many existing units have had their abilities enchanced orchanged.
Like StarCraft, you can jump into multiplayer on Battle.net andplay with up to 8 humans/players.You can only use Brood War against otherplayers who have Brood War (sorry! no mixing versions) -- so make sure yourfriends pick up a copy as well.
If you liked StarCraft, there's simply noexcuse not to own this.

Championship Manager 2010 (PC) Review

Championship Manager 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
CM 2010, which I play on a Mac (A Mac version is available) is probably the better CM releases that I've played, the game play has been revamped to look much better although I think this takes a toll on your memory and the game gets sluggish within about 30-45 minutes of starting it. I need to quit and restart it to make it run smooth but thats not a HUGE inconvenience.

Like other CMs this allows you to take managerial control of a team and help them progress through the ranks. The new 3D game display engine is quite neat and the goals and saves are realistic. The game play isn't as tough as before and you can find your way around within 2-3 games if you are a veteran CM player. New players might take a little while longer but the general intuitiveness of the game helps a lot.

The team training sessions actually help and so do practicing set pieces! Scouting is a major improvement as you can concentrate your scouting resources of selected continents and bring up reasonable results.

All in all, it's quite a good purchase. I'd rate it 4.5 on 5 but because of the general sluggishness of the game and memory hogging, I'll give it a solid 4 on 5.

I wasn't able to use the download options on SI's website, as I was deployed to Iraq at the time, so Amazon's option to get a hard copy was vital.I got the game (in Iraq!) only a few days after it was released.

If you haven't played since before 2008 or 2007, you certainly need to pick up 2010.The version is a great leap forward.Visually, it's a lot like 2009.The game play continues to give you more power, but in a way that's easier to understand. One of the options I particularly enjoy is where, instead of moving sliders, you assign a player a "type" of position, based on where he is on the field. This will determine how he plays that position.Instead of just a Striker, you can have a Deep-Lying Forward, Poacher, Target Man, etc. It's (in my mind, at least) a more intuitive way of doing business.

I'm hopelessly addicted to FM2010.

Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday Expansion Pack Review

Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of Paradox Interactive. These guys make the perfect games for history geeks like me. Gloriously complex, very playable, with the smack of verisimilitude. Hours of pleasure..

I started war-gaming twenty-five years ago, when I was just a kid in grade school- the Old Avalon Hill era. Hexagon boards, dice, fat rulebooks and hundreds of cardboard unit chits. And far too few fellow geeks to play with. A.H. put out a strategic level European/Mediterranean theatre game called Third Reich. I loved that game. I played WWII out with my little brother, or by playing all factions myself, hundreds of times. Ah, the good old days..

But wait, no. The sepia tones fade to a harsh, merciless grey. I've played HoI2, and this new hyper charged "Doomsday" revision of that glorious game. And there is no comparison. This is Third Reich beatified and transfigured. To heck with the old days.

With HoI2 you can begin campaign play in 1936, 1938, 1939, 1941, or 1944. The diplomatic and military situation being as it was historically at each date. You can play any country in the world - any major power (Germany, U.K., U.S.A., U.S.S.R., France, Italy, Japan) or a lesser power such as Australia, S. Africa, Canada, Brazil, Turkey or Spain, etc. Or you can even play a minor country like Bhutan or Costa Rica - even though they have very little economic, scientific, diplomatic, political, or as a result, military power. Still, if you want to attempt world conquest with say Nicaragua, Switzerland, Tibet or Siam, you are free to.

There are also minor scenarios where you can play out Barbarossa, the Invasion of Poland, Japan in China, the Spanish Civil War, a hypothetical war between Argentina & Brazil, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Ardennes offensive (Battle of the Bulge).. you get the idea. I'm solely a 1936 campaign game man, myself, though, so I can't speak to the quality of the scenarios.

In the original HoI2 campaigns all end in 1947. Which often cuts the game short while things are still very interesting (Hitler played a very stupid HoI2 game- I mean, taking on the U.S.S.R. and U.S.A. simultaneously? While the U.K. is still kicking? Don't you be so stupid. Things could've gone on so much longer.. 988 years longer, vielleicht?) So 1947 is too early an end date.

This new Doomsday expansion corrects that. The new end date is 1953 (the year of Stalin's death.) And a new "Doomsday" scenario is added, beginning in 1945 with Germany defeated.Europe is divided between the Comitern and Allies, and they're at war. Dr. Strangeglove is in the house, ya'll. Yeeehaw!

Armageddon aside, the glory of HoI2 Doomsday is that you can start in 1936, and play through 1953, and absolutely anything can happen. Early Cold War, or Axis world domination, whatever. I mean, you can do all sorts of interesting things (especially if you use the F12 cheatcode "freedom" to change the political conditions of your country more quickly than would otherwise be allowed - Germany can be made communist, the U.S. fascist or communist, the U.S.S.R. a democracy - and all international alliances and national leaders will change..)

The economic and technological aspects of this game are very good- the tech tree is pretty complex, and every country- even the little ones - has a bevy of historic industrial firms and technicians (e.g., Germany has I.G. Farben, Krupp, Siemens, Junkers, Porsche, Rheinmetal, Mauser and individuals such as Guderian, Udet, Goering, Von Braun, Heisenburg, Von Manstein, Raeder, etc. the U.S. has Ford, Raytheon, Oppenheimer, McDonnell Douglas, Nimitz, etc.) who are assigned different tech/doctrinal projects. You can choose to pursue certain lines of technology, and military doctrine and ignore others, try to research them earlier than they were historically, etc.

Economically, each country has an factory industrial base which determines how many units you can produce or support, and which must be fed resources. Resources are obtained by controlling their geographic sources, or through trade with countries who have surplus resources.

Militarily, this is a division level game. The units are assigned historical names and designations (1st Panzer Division, 101st Airborne, K.M.S. Bismarck, U.S.S. Lexington, etc.) You organize them into corps and armies, and fleets. Every unit has a historical commander whom you can reassign and promote, with his own unique skills (Patton, Rommel, Monty, Yamamoto- the whole gang's here.)

Politically and diplomatically you can pick your governmental cabinet. If you dislike your head of state, you can gradually over time manipulate the political & economic climate of your society so that he is replaced. (or you can use the cheat code I mentioned to do it instantaneously.) The U.S., for example, has its historic elections, and F.D.R. can be defeated.. how about a Landon or Wilkie administration?

The axes of your political and economic culture that you can manipulate over time are these: Right/Left, Democratic/Authoritarian, Open/Closed Society, Free Market/Centrally Planned Economy, Standing/Drafted Army, Hawk/Dove, Interventionist/Isolationist. All choices here effect your game play.

One other major change in Doomsday from the original is that they've added an espionage tab to your menu.. you send spies to check out your enemies and neighbors, and get partial and less than fully accurate information instead of HoI2's omniscient all army/navy/air force comparison charts. More realistic, methinks. You also get an idea of what they are researching, which is a nice improvement. Your spies can attempt other missions (assassinate leaders, sabotage projects, foment partisan revolt, etc.) Overall, an improvement, I think.

The A1 is solid, and will usually throw up a challenge. The program is pretty stable, and Paradox is very good about patches and support. Check out Paradox's web forum [..]

In sum: the game is a excellent one. If you play a major power, and stick to the historical script, the war will quite often fall out more or less as things actually did. But what's the fun of that? You could, instead, say, skip Pearl Harbor and take and send the Japanese Imperial Army into Russia instead of China. Or, you could play the U.S. and realize her manifest destiny by conquering all the Americas.. Or you could truly challenge yourself and attempt wide conquest with a middling power such as Turkey, Spain, Nationalist China, Brazil, or Canada.. or try to prosper with even a much smaller power such as Ireland, or a Latin American country like Guatemala. Be creative.

Five plus stars. Buy this game if it sounds at all interesting to you.

Product Description:
Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday is an intriguing real-time strategy game for the PC that begs some interesting "what if" questions related to World War II. Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday includes all the campaigns from the original Hearts of Iron II that take place in 1936, 1939, 1941, and 1944, as well as a new mission that continues the battle in 1953. The world of Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday is both familiar and strange, with events that often come to drastically different conclusions than they did historically.

Events often come to drastically different conclusions than they did historically. View larger.

This game is reminiscent of the classic WWII board game, Axis and Allies. View larger. This version of Hearts of Iron II also includes updates and expansions requested by gamers, with technology, units, and abilities being added for each side to make for a balanced gameplay. What is also intriguing is the ability to resolve the entire conflict through diplomatic means rather than by force -- a trait that sets this game apart from most WWII strategy games. Players can trade weapons and secrets with allies to strengthen themselves as well as their alliances.
This game is reminiscent of the classic WWII board game, Axis and Allies, but has the additional advantages of the computer platform -- more complexity, and real-time gameplay -- that keeps the action non-stop. One particularly unique aspect of Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday is your ability to play from more than just the traditional "big boys", such as the US, UK, Russia, Italy, Japan and Germany; in fact, you can play as any one of 175 countries. You also have the option of which year to start and what specific missions to try, which is especially important as the only way out, other than by winning, is by surrendering.
It's also important to choose which technological path to take, rather than simply assigning certain strengths based on your choice of side or nation. Technology is broken down into different categories, such as Air Doctrine, Land Doctrine, Armor and Naval units, as well as the classic and sometimes all-important Secret Weapon programs. In order to make technological progress, you'll need to assign teams to work on specific projects, many of them based on real historical programs. Each team has different sets of skills that allow them to work on different projects, while each project focuses on a different field. The expanded technological tree in Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday even allows you to develop nuclear weapons. Another important factor in this game is diplomacy, in which your choice of allies can say as much about you as who your foes are. The all new diplomatic options and intelligence system lets you steal and sabotage equipment, control mass media, start riots, and even assassinate ministers and leaders.

MATRIX Uncommon Valor: Campaign for the South Pacific Review

MATRIX Uncommon Valor: Campaign for the South Pacific

I got this as Christmas present. I like cardboard counters/mapboard wargames, and this game is a computer version of a mapboard wargame, similar in concept to Panzer General series.
It features south pacific area (from Rabaul to Noumea, including east Australia bases), with allied coastwatchers and beaches (that can be owned by the players). You can assemble/dissassemble TFs, assign new commanders to TFs, command every historical plane squadron in different types of missions (naval search, recon of specific objective, ground or naval attack, training...) and also command battalions of ground forces and base units to attack the enemy (or improve your facilities).
Ships can be ordered different kind of missions, like combat surface, naval bombardment of bases, mining missions...and, even though you can leave the TF commander free (the computer IA) to choose when to sail for the base to resupply for fuel or supplies...each base keeps track of the supplies and fuel, as well as of each units' experience, fatigue and morale.
The worst of the game is the graphics and sound, graphics are just "enough" good, and sounds are really bad. Also, another point against the game is that, with the option "combat animation" set on, each turn is really slow, and well, the combat animations themselves are just a few "flashes" to indicate gun firing, and a few graphics for ships' fires, or flak...they're something you might want to look at the first time, then set them off for faster play.
My advice : if you like&enjoy mapboard wargames (like Flat Top) you'll like this one, or if you like games like Panzer General (turn based strategy games)you might as well like this one, even though its slower game pace related to Panzer General 2 or 3D. Otherwise, if you're looking for something like command and conquer, look elsewhere, this one's not for you. I rated it 4 stars because i love mapboard wargames and this one is much similar, otherwise, compared to other games (like Total War Medieval, or similar), it would rate much less...

Battle Realms Review

Battle Realms

What a fantastic game -- I am a die-hard fan of the real-time strategy genre, and never thought I'd ever match the goosbumps I got the first time I played Warcraft years ago.Starcraft came close (I still play that game with my brother-in-law online...timeless), Kohan and C&C Red Alert 2 were fun while they lasted, but Battle Realms really does take the cake.Who'd have thought that Ubi Soft, notorious for releasing horribly untested games, would make something as great as BR?True, the game does have a slight tendency to bomb occasionally, but a patch should fix that shortly.BR's 4 clans are extremely well-balanced and unique with special "battle gear"that improves combat acumen.Populations are limited to 30 -- including your peasant class -- and there are built-in discouragements to the rush tactic.I know you don't know me, but trust me: it you've ever liked an RTS game, you owe it to yourself to check out Battle Realms.

Product Description:
Battle Realms is a fantasy real-time strategy innovation inspired by kung-fu movies and Japanese mythology. Players assume the role of the hero, Kenji, and develop a village of peasants into a clan of individual, highly specialized warriors.
While most real-time strategy games focus mostly on resource mining and mass unit production, players of Battle Realms will spend most of the game waging war. Not to say that unit production isn't important; in fact, unit production is intricate and vital. Each unit starts as a simple peasant, and is trained for a specific role in a dojo. Cross-training, experience, and planning can turn a simple peasant into a powerful samurai warrior.
The world and environment of Battle Realms play an important role in the campaign. The battlefields come alive with weather and wildlife. Combat will change as the elements shift. Individual battles can be won and lost, but the war rages on. Noble acts during combat earn you Zen points with which warriors can improve their weapons and magic. Use these resources to build your army one warrior at a time, and conquer Battle Realms.

Super-Sized Fun Pack Review

Super-Sized Fun Pack

If you are just a run-of-the-mill computer 'gamer' who enjoys a good match of solitaire or playing fun sim games like Sim City or Zoo Tycoon, then this 4-pack of games is a good choice, especially for families. While the graphics and altogether dynamic gameplay are not incredibly astounding, they are eye-catching and this is a great pack if you play games with friends, or if you enjoy to play against the computer.
Clue, Life, and Monopoly, are all board games-come-computer games that are colorfully done in cartoony 3d graphics. The gameplay is much like that of the boardgames with some cute interactive features and of course, a simulated 3d environment.Clue is a detective game where you have to figure out whodunit, in what room, with what weapon.I believe you can also play this on the internet with other friends through mediums like MSN messenger (copyright and all that jazz). Its got a darker feeling compared to the other games, and is well done but a bit confusing for younger players.Life is simple, you go through the "stages of life" after college, where the luck of the spinning wheel can make you a millionaire winner or a ho-hum average worker come retirement.Monopoly is much like the classic property buying game iwth a number of different gameplay options and cool graphics.
Finally there is the game that alone makes this pack worth it.Rollercoaster Tycoon, the best simulated theme park creator in the world, is based on a simple concept that you won't be able to stop playing.Be warned now its addicting.Basically htere are scenarios that you have to beat (as well as expansion packs you can pick up), such as "Have this many guests in your park" or "Generate this much through ticket sales".Its a really great game and both challenging with out being annoyingly hard.
All in all I would recommend this pack to families or people that like playing a game occasionally with out wanting to spend lots of money.

Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War Review

Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War
Average Reviews:

This game is absolutely brilliant.I am a Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors fan and thought this would be very similar, but was surprised at how unique it is to anything I've ever played before.I have played a lot of games categorized as strategy that involved very little real strategy. This game truly is a strategy game!It is a cross between Dynasty Warriors and Total War (PC).

There are many different units you can lead in a battle. Some have advantages over others and are at a disadvantage when facing other units. It is like a rock, paper, scissors set-up.Yet there are helpful things on the game screen that allow you to see whether or not you will have an advantage or a disadvantage over an enemy. This keeps you from having to have a whole advantage chart memorized.

One thing I really liked is your character gains experience only with the types of units he has commanded during a battle. In that way, you get good at leading certain types of troops based on your experience at leading those troops.

I am in love with this game. The learning curve is really not that steep, though at first it might seem to be.This is definitely a unique game when compared to everything else currently out there, and might set the standard for a new style of real time strategy.A definite must play for fans of strategy games!
