Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday Expansion Pack Review

Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of Paradox Interactive. These guys make the perfect games for history geeks like me. Gloriously complex, very playable, with the smack of verisimilitude. Hours of pleasure..

I started war-gaming twenty-five years ago, when I was just a kid in grade school- the Old Avalon Hill era. Hexagon boards, dice, fat rulebooks and hundreds of cardboard unit chits. And far too few fellow geeks to play with. A.H. put out a strategic level European/Mediterranean theatre game called Third Reich. I loved that game. I played WWII out with my little brother, or by playing all factions myself, hundreds of times. Ah, the good old days..

But wait, no. The sepia tones fade to a harsh, merciless grey. I've played HoI2, and this new hyper charged "Doomsday" revision of that glorious game. And there is no comparison. This is Third Reich beatified and transfigured. To heck with the old days.

With HoI2 you can begin campaign play in 1936, 1938, 1939, 1941, or 1944. The diplomatic and military situation being as it was historically at each date. You can play any country in the world - any major power (Germany, U.K., U.S.A., U.S.S.R., France, Italy, Japan) or a lesser power such as Australia, S. Africa, Canada, Brazil, Turkey or Spain, etc. Or you can even play a minor country like Bhutan or Costa Rica - even though they have very little economic, scientific, diplomatic, political, or as a result, military power. Still, if you want to attempt world conquest with say Nicaragua, Switzerland, Tibet or Siam, you are free to.

There are also minor scenarios where you can play out Barbarossa, the Invasion of Poland, Japan in China, the Spanish Civil War, a hypothetical war between Argentina & Brazil, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Ardennes offensive (Battle of the Bulge).. you get the idea. I'm solely a 1936 campaign game man, myself, though, so I can't speak to the quality of the scenarios.

In the original HoI2 campaigns all end in 1947. Which often cuts the game short while things are still very interesting (Hitler played a very stupid HoI2 game- I mean, taking on the U.S.S.R. and U.S.A. simultaneously? While the U.K. is still kicking? Don't you be so stupid. Things could've gone on so much longer.. 988 years longer, vielleicht?) So 1947 is too early an end date.

This new Doomsday expansion corrects that. The new end date is 1953 (the year of Stalin's death.) And a new "Doomsday" scenario is added, beginning in 1945 with Germany defeated.Europe is divided between the Comitern and Allies, and they're at war. Dr. Strangeglove is in the house, ya'll. Yeeehaw!

Armageddon aside, the glory of HoI2 Doomsday is that you can start in 1936, and play through 1953, and absolutely anything can happen. Early Cold War, or Axis world domination, whatever. I mean, you can do all sorts of interesting things (especially if you use the F12 cheatcode "freedom" to change the political conditions of your country more quickly than would otherwise be allowed - Germany can be made communist, the U.S. fascist or communist, the U.S.S.R. a democracy - and all international alliances and national leaders will change..)

The economic and technological aspects of this game are very good- the tech tree is pretty complex, and every country- even the little ones - has a bevy of historic industrial firms and technicians (e.g., Germany has I.G. Farben, Krupp, Siemens, Junkers, Porsche, Rheinmetal, Mauser and individuals such as Guderian, Udet, Goering, Von Braun, Heisenburg, Von Manstein, Raeder, etc. the U.S. has Ford, Raytheon, Oppenheimer, McDonnell Douglas, Nimitz, etc.) who are assigned different tech/doctrinal projects. You can choose to pursue certain lines of technology, and military doctrine and ignore others, try to research them earlier than they were historically, etc.

Economically, each country has an factory industrial base which determines how many units you can produce or support, and which must be fed resources. Resources are obtained by controlling their geographic sources, or through trade with countries who have surplus resources.

Militarily, this is a division level game. The units are assigned historical names and designations (1st Panzer Division, 101st Airborne, K.M.S. Bismarck, U.S.S. Lexington, etc.) You organize them into corps and armies, and fleets. Every unit has a historical commander whom you can reassign and promote, with his own unique skills (Patton, Rommel, Monty, Yamamoto- the whole gang's here.)

Politically and diplomatically you can pick your governmental cabinet. If you dislike your head of state, you can gradually over time manipulate the political & economic climate of your society so that he is replaced. (or you can use the cheat code I mentioned to do it instantaneously.) The U.S., for example, has its historic elections, and F.D.R. can be defeated.. how about a Landon or Wilkie administration?

The axes of your political and economic culture that you can manipulate over time are these: Right/Left, Democratic/Authoritarian, Open/Closed Society, Free Market/Centrally Planned Economy, Standing/Drafted Army, Hawk/Dove, Interventionist/Isolationist. All choices here effect your game play.

One other major change in Doomsday from the original is that they've added an espionage tab to your menu.. you send spies to check out your enemies and neighbors, and get partial and less than fully accurate information instead of HoI2's omniscient all army/navy/air force comparison charts. More realistic, methinks. You also get an idea of what they are researching, which is a nice improvement. Your spies can attempt other missions (assassinate leaders, sabotage projects, foment partisan revolt, etc.) Overall, an improvement, I think.

The A1 is solid, and will usually throw up a challenge. The program is pretty stable, and Paradox is very good about patches and support. Check out Paradox's web forum [..]

In sum: the game is a excellent one. If you play a major power, and stick to the historical script, the war will quite often fall out more or less as things actually did. But what's the fun of that? You could, instead, say, skip Pearl Harbor and take and send the Japanese Imperial Army into Russia instead of China. Or, you could play the U.S. and realize her manifest destiny by conquering all the Americas.. Or you could truly challenge yourself and attempt wide conquest with a middling power such as Turkey, Spain, Nationalist China, Brazil, or Canada.. or try to prosper with even a much smaller power such as Ireland, or a Latin American country like Guatemala. Be creative.

Five plus stars. Buy this game if it sounds at all interesting to you.

Product Description:
Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday is an intriguing real-time strategy game for the PC that begs some interesting "what if" questions related to World War II. Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday includes all the campaigns from the original Hearts of Iron II that take place in 1936, 1939, 1941, and 1944, as well as a new mission that continues the battle in 1953. The world of Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday is both familiar and strange, with events that often come to drastically different conclusions than they did historically.

Events often come to drastically different conclusions than they did historically. View larger.

This game is reminiscent of the classic WWII board game, Axis and Allies. View larger. This version of Hearts of Iron II also includes updates and expansions requested by gamers, with technology, units, and abilities being added for each side to make for a balanced gameplay. What is also intriguing is the ability to resolve the entire conflict through diplomatic means rather than by force -- a trait that sets this game apart from most WWII strategy games. Players can trade weapons and secrets with allies to strengthen themselves as well as their alliances.
This game is reminiscent of the classic WWII board game, Axis and Allies, but has the additional advantages of the computer platform -- more complexity, and real-time gameplay -- that keeps the action non-stop. One particularly unique aspect of Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday is your ability to play from more than just the traditional "big boys", such as the US, UK, Russia, Italy, Japan and Germany; in fact, you can play as any one of 175 countries. You also have the option of which year to start and what specific missions to try, which is especially important as the only way out, other than by winning, is by surrendering.
It's also important to choose which technological path to take, rather than simply assigning certain strengths based on your choice of side or nation. Technology is broken down into different categories, such as Air Doctrine, Land Doctrine, Armor and Naval units, as well as the classic and sometimes all-important Secret Weapon programs. In order to make technological progress, you'll need to assign teams to work on specific projects, many of them based on real historical programs. Each team has different sets of skills that allow them to work on different projects, while each project focuses on a different field. The expanded technological tree in Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday even allows you to develop nuclear weapons. Another important factor in this game is diplomacy, in which your choice of allies can say as much about you as who your foes are. The all new diplomatic options and intelligence system lets you steal and sabotage equipment, control mass media, start riots, and even assassinate ministers and leaders.

Scooby-Doo: Jinx at the Sphinx Review

Scooby-Doo: Jinx at the Sphinx
Average Reviews:

I purchased this game a couple of weeks ago for my daughter, who is almost five, and she loves playing it.It has different levels of difficulty and she is ecstatic that she has been able to solve the first level mystery so far.She needs a little bit of help with the reading parts, but she loves the matching games and the ones for scoring scooby snacks. She often plays with her Dad and they enjoy trying to solve the mysteries together. The only negative with the game is that the animation is a little jerky; but, at her age, she doesn't seem to mind.

Luxor: Amun Rising (PC Games) Review

Luxor: Amun Rising
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Luxor: Amun Rising is basically a retread of the first game with slicker stage graphics, some new twists, a new "storyline," and a new power-up.

What's different:
1.Three difficulty levels instead of the one level with escalating difficulty in the first game.
1.One new powerup, the Scorpion. When you catch this powerup, a scorpion shoots out of the pyramid and destroys the first 10 balls it runs into along the track (or however many are left in a chain if less than 10).If there are two tracks in a stage, it seems to attack the chain that's closest to its respective pyramid. This is an immensely helpful powerup.
2.Several stages feature obstacles on the track that act as dead zones; balls shot at them will simply pass through and hit whatevers above them. These can be frustrating if you aim or time a shot poorly.
3.Most of the stages feature slightly better graphics and more imaginative designs than in the first game, as well as some amusing names and decorations. The first stage, for instance, is called "Die Khufu Die" (obviously in reference to the incredibly frustrating stage 5-4, "Khufu's Revenge," in the first game) and features a picture of Khufu with spears sticking out of him.

Pros:
1.It's as insanely addictive as the first game.
2.The Scorpion powerup
3.Graphics are as good as the first, if not a little better.

Cons:
1.The storyline is just as superfluous to this game as it was to the first one.
2.It could've used more powerups, or even some penalty actions, to really spice up gameplay.
3.For a sequel, it's really not that difficult. The first game , in the later stages, was VERY difficult and was a genuine test to the player.Amun Rising presents very little genuine challenge, even on the expert level. This is my biggest complaint.

All in all, if you enjoyed Luxor then you should enjoy Amun Rising, but don't expect a huge leap between the two games.

I enjoyed the first Mortimer Beckett, and was definitely looking forward to the new one.I was not at all disappointed. This MB has the player travelling through time, seeking out the pieces of objects that will complete puzzles necessary to advance to the next level. The graphics on this game are truly fantastic. We go with Mortimer throughout time- to ancient Egypt, Camelot, a robot lab in the future, and many more. The puzzles are harder than those in the first game, and the game was longer than the first. Those who loved the first MB, or those who enjoy hidden object games generally should definitely try out this game.

The Sims Complete Collection Review

The Sims Complete Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In case mac owners don't know, if you own Mac OS X and are running Tiger or higher you will have a problem in the "Create a Sim" screen. What will happen is that when you switch through outfits, the last outfit won't leave the screen and all them will overlap over each other making it hard to see them, the same will happen when the sims change clothes in the game and when you want to buy a pet at the pet stores.

It is not the worse thing in the world and will not crash your game, but is very annoying and should be known before anyone spends their money. I'm using Panther. Anything before Tiger is fine. JUST BE WARNED!After buying just a few of the expansion packs, I FINALLY decided to get the Complete Collection only after buying an external hard drive. I don't know about anyone else, but there was no way almost 4 gigs would fit on my G4 imac. Although, even on the harddrive the game does slow, but is still playable. I am often surprised that I can stay Downtown, Studio Town, etc. so long. That is a real treat.

Bad side? There is too much to do. I have yet to do anything in Magic town nor Vacation, and the idea of being able to renovate all this and add my own touch is overwhelming. You can literally start over any sim town from the ground up and make it to your liking. Very consuming to say the least, downloads notwithstanding which not only enchance your game (and may clog it up) makes it more realistic when you're not using the same pieces of furniture in each house.

The only gripe I may have is relationships. With the Complete Collection, I'm not sure, but I think the the Hot Date relationship 'meter' takes over and relationships are much harder to form and take much longer. I had a couple who constantly had red hearts but whenever I had one propose the other would get totally turned off and her attraction would bump down several points, I never understood i--even when they were 'in the mood' as I was instructed. All needs were maxed and they were happy and still didn't want to get together. Go figure. If you really want to form families, relationships and Star Careers you will have to work for it. But the good thing about the Sims is you don't really have too.

You can play any way you want. If you're just into design you can create as many houses as you want and move on. and if you have people living in your houses and don't care for them hooking up, then they'll just be roomies. No problem.

I had plenty of problems previously with my other expansions, and crashing was one of them. I don't know why, but objects that I had before, then put them back in my game a second or third time (after needing to reinstall) made the game crash. Frequently, the sofas and paintings just would not pull into the game and when they did it crashed when I tried to save. Now, everything pulls into the game and saves with no problem.

I think that having all the expansion packs made the game more stable--for me and possibly for macs in general, I don't know, but I know that all the packs seemed to help with the crashing.

Overall, there is little cons to owning this. One thing I will say is that Non-Unleashed fans will tire quickly of stray pets wondering around the lots and into the house.

Still, worth the money to have all 7 packs on one disc, just make sure you have the hard drive space-- and spare for downloads-- and you'll be fine.

I purchased this game after the sampling the free trial and although is was simple to play, I did enjoy the various mysteries and fun puzzles. The hidden items are rather simple to find, and puzzles are pretty simple to solve. However, it was a long game and and the music and characters were enjoyable and pretty true to the television series.I wouldn't recommend this for younger gamers since there are grisly murders involved, but for those who want to just sit back and spend a little free time "solving" murders, this could be a fun game.

Scooby Doo Case File #3 Frights, Camera, Mystery! Review

Scooby Doo Case File #3 Frights, Camera, Mystery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My 4 year old is a HUGE Scooby fan, and we have tried several of the scooby-doo case file games. This one seems to be the most difficult/challenging so far.

First, the graphics and voices are true to the tv show, so this game really holds my son's attention. I like that there are 3 levels of difficulty. We stuck to the "spooky" (easy) level. The main menu screen puts the gang in the middle of a movie studio. The studio employees are all leaving because they have been spooked by the ghost of a former stuntman for the studio. As the gang explores the movie set, there are several buildings they can enter in their search for clues.

Each building has suspects to interview, mini games and/or items to pick up. This format is similar to the other Scooby-doo case file mysteries we have rented. Once you find all the clues, you can guess at which of the suspects you think is behind the mystery and then learn the secret identity of the ghost.

Now, my son is probably on the young side for this game, and searching for clues and interviewing suspects was a little over his head. In some cases, you have to go into one building and talk to a suspect who will tell you that they need a specific item. Then you have to go to a different building to find the item and bring it back to the suspect. Not a problem for a slightly older child, but a little too complicated for us.

The mini games in this program are also a little more challenging than some of the other scooby games. There are some buildings that Shaggy and Scooby won't even enter until you give them scooby snacks. So the first thing you want to do is enter the theater to fill up your stash of scooby snacks. This game requires use of the keyboard arrow keys, and you have to be quick. The headless stuntman is chasing you and if he catches up to you before you've picked up your scooby snacks, he takes them from you.My 4 year old is a whiz at using the mouse to navigate, but not so good at using the arrow keys. So, even on the easiest level, he can't work the arrows fast enough to collect his scooby snacks - so he can't really work this game independently.

On the plus side, one thing this case files game does have that we have not seen in some of the "easier" scooby games is printable activities. As you walk around the movie studio, you will collect movie clip reels. When you click on the reel, it offers you the opportunity to print an activity that you can do offline.

This is a really great game and I'm sure we'll "grow into it".If you have older kids who are more adept at using the computer, then I definitely recommend this case file game. If, like me, you have a younger child, I'd suggest starting with Jinx at the Sphinx and work your way up to this one.

Zuma's Revenge with Peggle Bonus Review

Zuma's Revenge with Peggle Bonus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
ZUMA is back! And if you can believe IT IS EVEN BETTER!

PopCap Games introduced the original ZUMA in 2003 and brought to the foreground a genre that was, up to then, oriented exclusively towards kids. ZUMA created a new school of games: from the excellent LUXOR Series to the recent INCA BALL, the playful BEETLE BOMP and (my favorite!) ATLANTIS: SKY PATROL: Zuma-clones came in all shapes and forms. Some introduced new ideas and some of them improved the original concept. And the new ZUMA has incorporated most of them.

If you have already enjoyed the original game, let me tell you what is new. First off, yes, the graphics and sounds are much improved. Also, your frog does not have to simply rotate all the time. As with LUXOR, in some stages you can slide across a predefined path (not always horizontal) whereas, in others, you can hop between multiple Lily Pads.
Moreover, there are now three new special abilities: the Laser beam, the Lightening and the TriShot. With the Laser you can target specific balls (advisable to aim at the bonuses!); the Lightening will remove all balls of the same color as the one you targeted; and with the TriShot, well, it is pretty much self-explanatory: you fire off three metal canon-balls that wipe out everything in their path.
Finally, every 10 stages there are now bosses you cannot harm until their henchmen get smashed (an idea from ATLANTIS: SKY PATROL) or their specific weakness is figured out - and of course you will be fighting the color-stream at the same time.

If you are not familiar with the game this is the gist of it: a series of colored balls (with the number of different colors increasing every few levels) streams in and you have to shot and match them in sets of three or more in order to remove them - and prevent them from reaching the end zone. There are now numerous different modes (ADVENTURE, various CHALLENGES, IRON FROG) - and all are exceptional addictive!! So take care not to have any deadlines or immovable obligations looming!

This is a perfect example of what has come to be known as Casual Gaming. It would be a good idea to download the limited-time free trial version from a casual gaming site (such as POPCAP GAMES or REFLEXIVE - you can Google them) and decide for yourself whether this is indeed your cup of tea. It comes to about 100MB so a fast connection will be needed for that.

Everybody can make a good game that will run only on a super-computer. This is an example of pure programming genius!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I got this game as a gift from my family. I have the first Bejeweled game on my cell phone and it is a good way to waste time, while waiting for kids to finish sports practices. This game is even more fun! I like the updated versions included in this game. You can choose the type of gameyou want to play. There is a puzzle option, classic, timed (my favorite) and endless. My teenagers love this game too and they also love Peggle that comes with it. It is a good way to keep the mind sharp! I had no problems getting this game loaded on my Mac and I am surprised anyone did have problems. Pop cap games are all usually pretty good.

Nora Roberts: Vision in White Review

I strongly suggest reading the novel before playing the game. If you don't you'll call my four star rating way too high. The game follows the story line of the book very closely.I hadn't read it yet before I first played, and I'm convinced I would have liked the game much better had I been able to recognize the people and places. It's a shame, because the graphics are beautiful. The minigames are closely related to the story like framing pictures and decorating a wedding cake, finding hidden objects in the silver- and gold-decorated ballroom.

It is possible to earn hints for the hidden object puzzles by clicking on the transparent letters that spell VOWS in each scene. They're easily found which makes up for some of the objects being so gosh darned hard to find. The minigames are not difficult, but aren't all that challenging either. This is a game for fans of the book. The real fun is in the player's ability to become actively involved in the world of VOWS.

My only major complaint is the characters' voices. I think they're kind of unpleasant but that might just be me.
