(More customer reviews)As much as I hate to do it, I have to write a negative review on this package.Now, I'm not reviewing the game itself, which I have loved since I first started playing computer games.I'm reviewing this particular re-release by EA.I got it, hoping to finally play Alien Crossfire.I installed it, gave it all the proper permissions in the properties menu, and tried to run it.It didn't.I'm not sure exactly why it doesn't run, I have the original game cd currently installed on my Windows 7 machine and it runs perfectly.

It could be that this package doesn't support the 64-bit system I have; but like I said, the original works, so why wouldn't this?I don't understand it and I'm very disappointed.

If you're considering buying this package and you have a Windows 7 64-bit machine, be aware that it might not run.

Sid Meier's Civilization Chronicles Review

(More customer reviews)This collection is a great one - it's like buying the trilogy of your favorite movie series or buying all the episodes for Star Wars.

That means that there are exactly two reasons why anybody would buy this package.

The first reason is the most obvious: you don't have any (or most) of the titles and/or you are looking to learn more about the history of this classic game.

In that light, this package offers everything you can possibly buy with the Civilization title on it except for the very latest expansion packs to Civ 4.(There are nine titles here!)

If you have never seen the roots of Civilization (there were versions released for game consoles, as well), you will get your chance here.And again, if you love Civ but don't have the "not for sale in stores" versions of older Civ titles, here you go.

The second reason somebody would buy this package is simply because they are a diehard fan of Civilization and want it all.

My comparison is to movie trilogies insomuch as they typically offer slightly upgraded versions of the products released many years ago, thus increasing both the nostalgia and the fervor.Some titles have essentially been patched to perform decently on newer computer systems - reminds me of the Atari Classic Games release a few years ago where they enabled the old games to play on Windows XP, for example.

This package meets your needs if you want it all as you get every Civilization title (expanded or not) to play on today's current computer systems.More importantly for the diehard fan are the collectible items inside.

There is also a DVD that is pretty cool, I think.It is essentially the "Making of..." feature that you find with movies, and because Civilization is a classic, this "Making of..." will appeal to those who have been with Civilization for a long time.

There is also the card game (which I never got into because I'd rather sit in front of my computer and have it do most of the work).This game is most exciting when you play it with your friends, in my opinion.My challenge was finding even one friend who loved Civ as much as I to play this with me, but all those online features really drew me away from the cards (if I wanted to play multi-player).The card game is still fun, though - it can let you interact with your friends more intimately.

And, of course, the book...

This is more than just a game manual or a strategy guide - this is the bible (as they tried to make it out to be).But it is basically the DVD documentary in written form, albeit nicely done.It is a great collector's item as it shows you a lot of the concepts (new and old) and some of the "mind of Sid," as well as the chronology/history of it all (like changes between the titles).Good content if you are into that sort of thing.

I really think that the collectors will appreciate this offering the most.I can't imagine turning people on to the Civilization culture by introducing them to the older titles and then having them work their ways up to Civ IV.

In reality, if you are a Civ history/culture buff, this is your $65 baby.

I also noticed that for about $91 you can get EVERY title ever made for Civilization - that means you just add the new Civ IV: Warlords expansion pack to the order.

For me, personally, I own Civs 1-4 on one format or another, and I have spent almost $200 so far.I thought Civ 3 was perfect for gamers like me (people without advanced computer degrees but who love to customize), but nowadays the Civ titles are increasing the gap between the yuppies and the computer geeks.(I am a computer geek, but on the lower end.)

Buy this if you want it all (in a nice box to boot).If you aren't that way, just buy Civilization 3 Complete - it's got everything you'd love about Civilization and the price is delectable.

Buccaneer's Bounty Review

Tortuga and Port Royale II are similar games that give the player the opportunity to sail between several Carribean islands and amass a fortune by either trading, taking contracts/missions, pirating, or a combination of all styles. Patrician is more town based and emphasizes RTS style play centered on a successful economy.

Viewpoint in all three games varies depending on what you are doing. Port Royale and Patrician use an isometric view in towns, while Tortuga uses a landscape style "view from the sea" interface. Players may select buildings to open menus that pertain to each particular structures function. Tortuga and PR use an overhead view while the player is at sea, using a blown up map of the islands to travel.

All three titles are fun and have their own unique merits. I prefered Tortuga as it offered what I thought was a superior level of gameplay balance. PR, however, has an added bit of depth that allows the player to actually build structures on islands and start producing products to sell. This offers a nice added bit of depth and challenge as it then becomes necessary to make sure your factories have raw materials, make sure you have an adequate workforce, and make sure your workforce has housing etc..

I have played Patrician least of the the 3 which accounts for my limited comments.

While a little dated graphically all three titles offer solid gameplay experiences at a remarkably affordable price. Additionally, there are not too many current generation games that offer similar gameplay.

Stronghold 2 Deluxe Review

(More customer reviews)This game is great. It runs fine on my system. I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ @ 2.4 Ghz, Onboard Geforce 6150se (not the greatest) with 128mb, and Windows Vista Home Premium. Runs like a champ. Its alot harder than Crusader by a long shot. If you have played crusader then you know its not so much about the castle and more about killing people. In this one its seems more about your castle. I mean you get lots of great units to use to kill your enemy, but to get there it takes great castle management. Very fun game once you get the hang of it!

Civilization 3: Conquests Expansion Pack Review

(More customer reviews)This is a GREAT expansion pack. Particularly if you skipped "Play The World" (as I did). There's more, more, MORE of everything, and enough interesting gameplay tweaks that it makes Civ 3 feel like a brand new game.
What makes it so good?
* New tribes to play. Or, perhaps more importantly, new tribes to play against. The Mayans can be a terror.
* New tribe attributes. Seafaring! Agricultural! OK, that doesn't sound that exciting, but it definitely has an impact on gameplay and strategy. Agricultural favors the AI such that the new Killer AI tribes are almost always those with the Ag trait, like the Celts.
* Boosted navy! Combined with the Seafaring, navy is still underpowered, but way better than before. On an archipelago map, seafaring can mean the difference between a breezy success and a slow slog.
* Boosted airforce! Bombardment in general is boosted, so everything from catapults to stealth bombers feels a little more useful.
* Fewer resources! Wait, fewer resources? Well, not fewer KINDS of resources. Just fewer all around. You either have to learn to play very nice with the AI or very mean.
* Entertaining scenarios! From the cradle of civilization to the 20th century, you can have your turn (sorta) re-enacting historical events. These can be fun, fast, intense, changes of pace from the epic game.
* New techs/wonders/governments! The unit-producing Statue of Zeus and Knights Templar are a hoot. The Temple of Artemis is amazingly powerful (but very short-lived). The Internet--well, like all the modern wonders, it seems a little too late. But it ain't bad. Fascism is a blast to play if you want to live out your Great Dictator fantasies, but you can see the AI self-destruct with it, too, unfortunately.
So, how was this Really Good Thing screwed up? Bugs! Bugs o' plenty! If you're a casual player, playing particularly on Chieftain or Warlord levels (maybe even Regent), you might not notice the bugs. Not at first, anyway. There are patches, oh, yes, there are patches, unofficial though they may be. But the situation seems to have arisen because the game was yanked out of public beta toward release-time, then tweaked and re-tested internally. Unfortunately, this game is too deep and often too subtle to be effectively tested by any in-house crew. Result? They managed to break trade, corruption and resource-distribution in the final release.
An official patch will eventually be released. Probably before the summer. Until then, you have the choice of living with bugs, or living with a beta patch (which might introduce its own bugs), or simply waiting to get the game.
There's an even more serious problem, really, underlying these changes. Trade is absolutely vital with the resource reduction. Either you find a way to trade, or you find a way to conquer, which may not be a play style you want to be forced into Every Single Game. The problem is, the trade and diplomacy systems are not sophisticated enough to meet this increased need. If you need iron, but it's all being traded, you can't offer the AI any incentive to trade it to you when the current deal is up. Those deals get made in-between turns, so you often don't have a shot.
So these fabulous changes are not only marred by bugs, the whole game creaks under them. And it's a long way to Civ 4.

Civilization 3 Gold Review

(More customer reviews)First off, Civilization III is a fantastic continuation of the 'Civilization' series of PC games which I've been playing since the first one hit the shelves back in 1991. However, I'm not here to give a review of this great game (there are plenty of reviews out there already) but rather to guide potential buyers for choosing which Civ3 version to get (or not get as the case may be).
The Civ3 games are as follows:
- Civilization 3 was originally released in 2001. It is the full, stand-alone game title.
- Civilization 3: Play the World was later released in 2002 as an add-on to the standard Civ3 game. It was generally considered buggy and incomplete and took a few patches to get it (almost) right.
- Civilization 3 Gold, released this year (2003), is essentially the original Civilization 3 game packaged with the "Play the World" add-on.
- Civilization 3: Conquests was also just released (2003) and is the latest add-on to the standard Civ3 game. IMPORTANT: the Conquests add-on includes EVERYTHING from the Play the World add-on plus adds a whole lot more goodies!! In a nutshell, Conquests fixes many of the problems with the PTW add-on and has a bunch of new stuff to boot.
So, my advice to anyone considering buying Civ3 Gold is thus: DON'T! Because you're better off buying the original Civ3 (which is extremely cheap now) with the Conquests add-on. It will cost you about the same for both anyway and you're essentially getting THREE Civ3 titles instead of only TWO.

Easy and not over detailed, takes plenty of planning so you have to play the game multiple times to get it right. ALways a challenge no matter how many time youplay it. Once you play you are hooked. DOnt bother with Pharaoh, its the same game, different graphics. I find the other city building games too detailed or stress too much war/battling.This would have been a great game in 7th grade to to learn all the mythology. They need a NOrse version!

MOO:2 is a galatic strategic adventure game.You pick from one of nearly a dozen races, each with its own benefits or drawbacks (The klackons, industrious space-ants, excel at production but are as dumb as bricks; ethereal Psilons float about learning with amazing rapidity but struggling to produce the ships necessary to defend themselves, while charming and wily Humans play folks against one another).A new feature allows you to customize your own race from the scores of options characterizing the pre-packaged ones.Want enormous planets?Make your race Aquatic and Subterranean.Insanely productive?Cybernetic, Tolerant (ignores pollution effects), +2 Production.The possibilities are staggering, and by buying a lot of negatives, one can afford an equal number of wonderful positives.
Each star system, unlike MOO:1, has a number of planets, most of which you can land on initially.Unlike MOO:1, you will not need to learn different _types_ of colonization for different planets (radiated, barren, toxic, etc.).However, you still need to research how to make them more fruitful.Along the way you receive the option to hire both planetary governors and ship leaders, effectively Heroes for your forces.Placing a good planetary leader in a system with a half-dozen habitable planets can double your empire's food, research, and/or industry production.
Other additional features such as multiple 'special' worlds guarded by nasty beasts, in addition to Orion itself, as well as the ability to purchase (eventually) robotic workers allows for great customization, and lets races rebound from setbacks.MOO:2 even allows you the option to let the computer calculate all the fleet battles nearly instantly, so you don't have to sit through a 2 hour fight involving stasis fields and boarding parties.However, you may only choose this option _before_ starting a given game, and cannot turn it off afterwards.Long fights may get annoying, but I find it far more useful to know _why_ you lost, not just that you did.
All in all, MOO:2 is a very engrossing strategy game, particularly for sci-fi buffs.Note however that while it has aged well, you may need to turn down the graphics accelerator on your computer to keep it from freezing up if you have a new one.Details on how should be included in the help files that come with the game.

(More customer reviews)I have been a Gamer (Mainly Strategy) now for approx 18 months and have bought all the top rating Strategy games that have been distributed including Age of Empires, Railroad Tycoon, Homeworld,Caesar111, Pharaoh,Alpha Centauri,HOMM. now they are all in the drawer, I have been playing1602ad (Demo Version) because as yet we cant get the full version here inAustralia, every night and have become so addicted to it that I have been emailing all over the World to try and get the full version.
Never has agame captivated me so much, its Empire building and easy interestingprogress of your City through development and trade always want me to try anew way and direction. One is not distracted by other players attacking youbut to some regard you are left alone to better your own City. I now havereached the stage where the darn game shuts down after saying one shouldbuy the full version and you have reached the level of under standing.Igive this game 5 stars and recommend it most heartily. Civilization 4: Beyond The Sword Review

(More customer reviews)Most expansion packs are disappointing, and until now the Civilization ones were no exception. They add a few new units, a few new civilizations, and maybe a concept or two. Although "Beyond the Sword" does all of this, it does a lot more. The additions--corporations that grow and develop, random events that affect relations and growth, a new espionage system that puts teeth back into spies--change the strategy of the game, adding complications and nuances throughout. This is especially good when all of the territories have been claimed. Before this pack, late gameplay was the least interesting part. Now, it is just as enjoyable as the rest of the game. There are also little things that I've enjoyed. Building wonders has always been a great part of Civilization, and now there are many more. New military units, like anti-tank infantry, guided missiles, and paratroopers, add new strategic possibilities to war, and personally, I really like the new animations for the spaceship. The only thing a littledisappointing is that they couldn't get Leonard Nimoy to read the script for the new technologies. I don't know who the new guy is, but compared to Nimoy, he sounds pretty lame. You won't be disappointed with this expansion pack. After playing this at my house a few nights ago, a friend of mine went home and ordered his own copy immediately. If you're a fan of the Civilization series, I suggest that you do the same.

(More customer reviews)I find that the improvements outweigh the negatives in Civ IV.I've played Civ III for a while, and was always frustrated with the unrealistic means of making it more difficult at higher levels - such as warriors defeating Knights in battle, other Civs building wonders in record turns, things like that.In Civ IV, those issues seem to be repaired.I've found that the rules they give us for combat movements, cost, etc., are not bypassed to make the game more difficult at higher levels.

I like the added variety of leaders and their abilities, seems more realistic and helpful for long term strategy.I also like the addition of more wonders, though they have changed some of the benefits of certain wonders so I needed to get used to the same thing being different.

I also am enjoying the new "Permanent Alliance" option.I just finally used that and really liked the dimension it added to game play.

The graphics do bother me a bit - too bouncy.I've changed settings as much as I can to get away from it, but it is still a bit bouncy and makes me dizzy.

I'm also not pleased with the bug that makes the game not work with my graphics card - which I have yet to find a fix for.I am playing it on another computer.One of my son-in-laws also can't use the game since his graphics card doesn't seem to be supported.He has a much bigger, badder, multimedia computer.

It also has a problem with the online updates.I updated and had serious issues which I had to call the manufacturer to fix - couldn't start the game, couldn't uninstall the game, couldn't reinstall the game - totally useless.A Direct X fix repaired that, but I don't think I even got the update after all the work! I'm quite leary of trying again. Then my son, who also has the game, updated his and it caused serious corruption for him too.I told him what my fix was, and it didn't work for his.He has to call and see what to do now.Updates aren't supposed to break the game, they are supposed to fix it. The game works fine without the updates, so I'm going to forego any future attempts to update.

(More customer reviews)Beyond the sword offers so much more than the previous one. Here is what I believe to be the best aspects:

Espionage is now a much larger part of the game. You may use funding to increase and decrease the amount you would like to concentrate on it. Just like science and culture.

Next war mod- This will add about thirty more techs to your tree in the end-game. Clones, mechs, and mind control centers are just a few examples. The only thing I don't like about this is you have to load the mod in order for it too work. Also, it is a tad annoying that the end-game music plays throughout the entire game if you choose this.

A bunch more leaders and few more civs- this is always a bonus. Holy Roman Empire and Byzantium are great choices. Being a fan of ancient Mesopotamian culture I appreciate the Babylonians and Sumerian civs being added as well. Native Americans are also a fun addition.

There is a new random event concept that actually adds a lot of fun to the game. Something good or bad happens at random and you make choices that either make things better or worse.

When it comes to the scenarios, it looks like they were going for a bit of experimentation instead of the usual. Still if you're anything like me you play these once and never look at them again.

There is one that is like a cyber-punk scifi where you fight zombies. Interesting idea but there isn't much to it. Just walk around in dark buildings while you are assaulted by wave after wave of zombies.

Perhaps the best one is an outer space scenario where you colonize planets. About ten new space civs to choose from and a brand new tech tree .

The Charlemagne scenario as you may have guessed involves the many countries vying for power during the dark ages.

Broken star is a russian campaign that involves a fractured russia. Choose a faction and attempt to find nukes.

I believe the animations have been improved and the units of different civs have been changed so they have more personality. ie. an asian civ will look asian while a native american civ looks native american, instead of the units of every civ looking the same.

Unlike the last installment I believe your getting your moneys worth this time around.

(More customer reviews)Civilization 4 is an excellent game, especially with the expansion packs. Everyone who enjoys strategy, empire building, city/nation management, etc. will love this game. It has it's flaws (most of these are opinions, however) such as culture identifying national borders (Berlin has been overwhelmed by the culture of Paris and has joined my Empire MWAHAHAHA!) but these do not detract from the gameplay value and the never-ending replayability. The game is tons of fun to play multiplayer as well.
However, be warned about this Complete Edition. The copy comes with version 3.13 of BTS of which several new updates have been released, however the Complete Edition is not compatible with these updates! To update, you will either have to alter your directory, or manually install. Not a big-deal at all, it just won't work with the auto-update in game.
