Gabriel Knight Mysteries: Limited Edition Review

Gabriel Knight Mysteries: Limited Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What can I say?The Gabriel Knight series is to traditional 3rd person adventure what the MYST series is to atmospheric 1st person adventure:the best of its kind.Briefly put, they follow the adventures and experiences of author and bookstore owner, Gabriel Knight, as he unravels various occult mysteries and at the same time explores his odd heritage.
The stories are incredibly engaging and well developed;the author, Jane Jensen, put a remarkable amount of research into the subject matter. The characters are likable and believable, and the voice acting -- and in GK2, the acting -- is some of the best.Everything about these games is excellently done.
For the collector, the GK series is a little history of the adventure genre.GK1 is made with the 2D animation typical of the early 90s, while GK2 explores the FMV trend popular in the middle of the decade. In both the main action consists of finding and applying inventory items and gathering information by talking to a wide range of characters, with a spattering of arcade type puzzles and brain teasers to keep things interesting. One feature that I liked was that you are awarded points for completing puzzles, but you don't have to complete every puzzle to complete the game. This makes the games highly replayable as you can play through once for the bones of the story and then play again to go back and pick up what you might have missed the first time. There are also a lot of fun easter eggs that you can stumble on by chance.
Though the subject matter is sometimes grim, dealing with murders, conspiracies, and such occult subjects as voodoo and werewolves, there is a levening of humour in the character interactions that keeps the darkness at bay.
I found these games totally absorbing; it was not unusual to play for 7 - 10 hours at a stretch without even realising it.They are also very long -- a plus as far as I'm concerned -- taking a week to ten days to complete. You can be killed, but it happens rarely and when it does you are given the option to try again from a point right before you made your fatal mistake, so if you haven't saved recently it isn't such a big deal.
Die Hard fans of first person, MYST-like adventures may have a hard time relating to the Gabriel Knight series because it's so different, and players of shooters or pure action games will probably not like GK at all.If you like games like _The Longest Journey_, however, you will like these.
The collectors edition pack contains a lot of extras -- books, soundtracks, and the like. That's a plus and well worth having, because I was so sorry when the games were over that I wanted to keep reliving the experience again and again.I'd pay twice the price just to have one of these games. They truly are the best.

The Quest For Glory Collection Review

The Quest For Glory Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game series has a special place in my heart.I grew up with the Sierra adventure games, and its something I look back on fondly.I enjoy the first person shooters, real-time strategy and dungeon crawl RPGs of today, but there is something about the adventure game format that has been all but forgotten today. It's like reading a good book but being able to interact with the world and have it presented visually like a movie.
Quest for Glory was something different though.Far more ambitious on a technical level than the other Sierra games, the series had a certain level of immersiveness to it that made it worth playing over and over, and still sticks with me today long after I last played it.
The first obvious improvement over the other Sierra games was the adding of an RPG element. This was advertised as adding replayability to the game, but more importantly it adds a level of immersiveness that you don't see these days. When you start out in QG1, your ultimate goal is to be a hero, but first you gotta make some money so you can eat!You might take a rather humbling job cleaning out the stables every day. You'd also be looking for ways to build your skills, be it by throwing knives at a target or training with a master swordsman.Activities like these never really got repetitive and really made you feel that YOU were that character and you had earned those skills you spent so much time developing.
The dialogue system was the other major feature of the QfG series, which doesn't get talked about as much but was probably as critical to the success of the series as anything else.Dialogue is a critical part of the game, because you figure out how to overcome many obstacles by talking to various people who know something about the subject. But they don't just come out and tell you -- you have to ask the right questions, which comes from listening carefully to what people have to say and thinking about it.Particularly in the first and second games, with the text prompt, it plays a bit like a mystery where you are a detective finding the clues to solve the puzzle. The richness of the dialogue also adds to the "good book" like feel of the game and you will begin to develop a feeling of attachment to many of the characters.
The second game is probably the crowning achievement of the series. The world is huge and detailed, the combat system is excellent, the entire gameplay is much more polished, the ending is the best in the series and the story is perfect.
Which leads me to my last comment on Quest for Glory. The story of these games was truly something to behold. The plot of each game is the same, you arrive in a city and must become the local hero. The first game takes this little idea and runs with it, creating a nice game world with an authentic atmosphere. From there though, the game universe gets thicker as your character grows, relationships with other people deepens, and the game progressively gets more mature and darker.
The fourth game is particularly interesting.By far the darkest of the series, the game oozes story as you are thrown into an area with a very complex history, and are forced to confront much of your own past as well. The game is also much more "story oriented" than the others, with much of the game being dominated by your relationship to one of the characters. There is a bit of a love interest in the game, and for me it was very effective. At the time I was going through puberty and having my own experience with "the one that got away", which really fit in well with the game and cemented this series role as an unforgettable part of my childhood.
The last game of the series is fairly anti-climatic.The authors had the very difficult task of writing an acceptable set of endings for the many different characters you could have played, plus it's clear Sierra pushed the game out the door before it was finished. It's probably best looked at as an expansion pack to the series, as a chance to return your character to civilization, meet some old friends one last time, and kick some [backside] now that he/she has become the character you dreamed of becoming while you were shovelling horse [material] in the first game.
I'm not sure if others will be able to get the same experience I did from Quest for Glory. The games are difficult to run on modern machines and maybe don't speak as well to people of different ages or backgrounds.I have to say though that I think these were some of the best games ever made and they always be a part of my childhood. To me, that's the best compliment you can give a game.Congratulations to the authors and thanks for making such great games.

Escape from Monkey Island Review

Escape from Monkey Island
Average Reviews:

I'd never really been all that keen on the Adventure game genre, up until yesterday -- the turning point was when I was over at a friend's house, watching his son play Escape from Monkey Island. What a blast!I went directly out and bought a copy for myself, and was up until 5:00AM playing.
I used to think that adventure games were not involved enough -- there was just never enough depth in most of the ones I'd played. But this one is great on so many different levels -- story, humour, puzzles, dialog, voice acting, graphics (okay, the graphics aren't exactly cutting edge, but the setting really drew me in).I have developed an affinity with the main character.
According to my friend, most of the LucasArts adventure games are as fun as this one, and the reason the adventure genre is supposedly dead, is because at one point the market was saturated with FMV garbage (probably the stuff I had played).
If EMI is any indication of how fun LucasArts adventure games are, I'm going to have to buy a bunch more -- let my wife knock on the computer room door all she wants, but I'm not coming out for at least a year! :-)

Grim Fandango (Jewel Case) Review

Grim Fandango
Average Reviews:

I was very dubious when I started playing Grim Fandango. An adventure gamewith polygons? And the SCUMM menu interface system that was in every singlepast Lucasarts adventure game was gone? But I gave it a try.Thankgoodness I did.
Grim Fandango is a story about Manny Calavera, a travelagent for the souls of the dead. He sells packages to the departed fortheir four year journey to their just rewards, and if he sells enough hecan earn enough to make his own trip someday.
Imagine the theme ofCasablanca with some mexican folklore and Mayan art thrown in for fun. Addbig orange demons, hot rods, killer beavers, cat races, and the grim reaperand you have Grim Fandango.
The story is supurb and the voice acting wastop notch. It's very difficult to do a dramatic yet humorous story, butsomehow this game pulls it off.Grim Fandango could yank me to the brinkof tears one moment and cause me to almost bust a gut another.
The thingsthat make a good adventure game are all there. Logical puzzles that don'tcause your gameplay to come to a standstill until you solve them, goodacting, good animation, and good code! If I were ever forced to reccomendonly on adventure game to someone, this would be it!Especially at the newlow price!

You can't ask for much more in a game like this. A fun setting, with fun and interesting characters. Increasingly difficult puzzles as the game progresses, with minigames ranging from poker to checkers, all well done. Even the gunfights are well done, and humor is present all the time, and in every character. A little mystery and horror is present in the game as well. A great story, a great adventure game, a great buy. This game will make you want to REALLY be in the old west.

Deep in the Caribbean lies Melee Island, ruled by the beautiful governor Elaine Marley. The cruel pirate LeChuck is deeply in love with her - so deeply that he refuses to accept his own death! As a ghost, he dwells with his undead crew somewhere near the mysterious Monkey Island. You are Guybrush Threepwood, a young man whose only wish is to become a real pirate. At the Scumm Bar you meet three pirates who tell you'll have to complete three difficult tasks in order to be worthy of this title. Could Guybrush ever suspect that while trying to complete those tasks, he will encounter the governor Elaine Marley, fall in love with her, and face the anger of the dreadful ghost pirate LeChuck?! This is when Guybrush' adventure truly begins! The Secret of Monkey Island is an adventure game that utilizes the command verb-based SCUMM interface first introduced in Maniac Mansion: you construct commands for Guybrush by clicking on the appropriate verb, and then clicking on the inventory item or an object in the room you want to interact with. It is the first LucasArts' adventure game in which it is impossible to get irrevocably stuck or to die. The branching dialogue system, where you choose one of the available responses while talking to people, allows you to talk to characters in different ways without fearing a wrong choice. There are plenty of inventory-based puzzles to solve, and even "insult sword-fighting" to participate in, where Guybrush has to prove his wit is as sharp as his sword!

Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls Review

Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Shivers 2, falling squarely in the family of point-and-click adventure/puzzle games, is a somewhat flawed but enjoyable, very challenging, and immersive journey. The premise of the game is that your friends, a rock band, went to a little town in the middle of nowhere to film a music video (after they earn enough money to pick up the tab, that is).. You go to visit them and find the town to be more or less deserted with the exception of a female ghost popping up now and then and some wacko running around in a stupid mask (i.e. your nemesis for this little adventure). The goal is simple: save your friends from the wacko. How do you go about that? The same as most games of its type...explore the town and solve a bunch of puzzles.
The gameplay is basically point-and-click. You look at objects. You explore areas. You solve a lot of puzzles (mostly of the extremely difficult brain teaser variety rather than the "find this item and use it here" type). Why anyone would lock their door with some horribly difficult puzzle that takes half an hour to solve is beyond me, but it's all part of the game. An extra bit worth noting is that the game actually allows you to watch music videos by your friends on television sets. The band, in all their infinite wisdom, decided to play detective and place clues to various puzzles in their music videos (haven't I seen this cartoon?). Not only are the music videos enjoyable to watch, but piecing together solutions to the clues with them and various other hints around town adds a bit of immersiveness to the game. Another touch of immersiveness comes from the fact that throughout the game, you yourself are playing detective. You actually search for personal info about the various people of the town and get to know them and study their interactions in an attempt to get to the bottom of the mystery and figure out the identity of the wacko in the stupid mask who may or may not be behind everything. It's not an easy task, though.. You'll likely need a notebook (and possibly a walkthrough) by your side and a significant amount of time to solve all of the puzzles and the mystery (although you can cheat and have the puzzles solve themselves at the cost of some points in your score)..
As for graphics, this game is a bit dated. It's over 5 years old, afterall. You have low resolution graphics, with the main game screen being displayed as a small box in the middle of your monitor. Still, they're sufficient enough that they don't take away much from the game. Also, the members of the band and their appearances and personalities actually fit their music and vibe perfectly (and the music videos actually look like music videos), so kudos to the development team for creating both visual and emotional character realism.
The sound is spectacular. The occasional background tunes and ambient sound are well done, and the rock music that appears in the music videos by your friends is amazing (and also included in audio CD format on the second disc!). I found myself watching the videos several times just for the music, and actually repeatedly listening to the soundtrack CD portion of the 2nd disc when not playing the game.
Now onto the major flaws of the game. The main flaw is that it's not scary at all. "Shivers" is quite the misnomer. While it does involve the supernatural, it's more of a mystery than a horror game. The second flaw is that the 2nd disc was somewhat buggy. It was perfectly playable until I reached one timed puzzle that repeatedly flew by in a fraction of the time it was supposed to take. The company didn't have a solution to the problem, and I ended up copying the answer from a walkthrough just so I could barely make it through the puzzle before time ran out.
Shivers 2 is an enjoyable and immersive game for those on a budget, especially those looking for a more thought-provoking puzzle/mystery-oriented experience. You'll find challenging gameplay and a bonus soundtrack of great music. Not bad at all for the price..

Chaos Legion Review

Chaos Legion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read lots of bad reviews of this game and was all set to forget about it rather than buy it. Then one day I read a Penny Arcade comic in which they declared that Gabe hated Chaos Legion. Well, if there's one thing I've learned from my years of reading PA, it's that if Gabe hates something, it's probably pretty good. He hated Kingdom Hearts, Gunvalkyrie, and most notably, Halo. The man is obviously not a bastion of good video game taste. Therefore, when he hates something, I assume it's worth buying. And so I went ahead and bought Chaos Legion.
At first I was inclined to agree with the reviews. My first couple of hours playing seemed to indicate a shallow and repetive game. I was expecting more of an adventure game with some exploration and such. There is none. CL is actually something of an arcade style beat-'em-up for the 21st century. You fight wave after wave of baddies. When they're gone, you fight a boss. Lather, rinse, repeat. However, the game became pretty difficult suddenly on stage 3 or 4, and I almost threw in the towel. For some reason, instead I decided to study the aspects of the game that I hadn't really been paying attention to; namely the Legions themselves. The legions are what make this game shine. Each one has their own strengths and weaknesses and abilities. You have to use them to strengthen them, you have to strengthen them to make them useful, and you WILL need their help to beat the game. The more they do battle, the more experience points they earn. You then get to choose how to spend those points to build them up. You can increase their attack power, their defense, their special abilities, etc. Learning how to use them effectively is the key to the game. Poor Gabe must not have been able to figure that out.

Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle

To this day, I still consider the old Lucas Arts games to be on par with Halo and the like. Witty, Montey-Python-esque humor beats shiny graphics anyday. My proof? First is FFVII, and second is this gem. If you've ever played Monkey Island this is for you. If not, buy Monkey Island, and then buy this. Trust me. Despite its age, it still creates interesting characters and awesome dialogue that simply cannot be beaten. There's even a SCUMM interpreter (google it), that can make it run on Window's XP. The only negative part is that it might be hard to find, especially for a good price.

If you're reading this review, you may be under the impression that I'm trying to oversell it. Perhaps I am. It doesn't matter; this game deserves it. Hands down, I have never seen a more beautiful and challenging game.Every scene is a postcard. The music is so perfect you think they chose theplaylist first and worked the game aronud it. It made me laugh, though thehumor is wry and subtle and may be hard to appreciate. It made my eyeswater, though there's no heavy-handed sentimentality. You'll fall in lovewith the characters, whose voices are perfect. When something goes wrong inthe story, you'll feel genuine delight or devastating depression, dependingon the situation. Lucasarts could easily have made a movie based on theinteresting characters and elaborate cutscenes alone. (And, for my money, Ihope they do...)
The game is not perfect, but in an industry fixated onviolent first-person shooters and manufactured WarCraft clones, GrimFandango is a welcome breath of fresh air. They say the adventure game isdead; this is proof to the opposite. It is a disappointment that the gamesold poorly, because it's just this kind of game that makes me glad I own acomputer.

Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles Review

Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles

Being a MYST fan, I almost didn't get this because of it going on-line as a type of MMORPG originally and I don't like those games.

But when I saw the this with both expansion packs, I couldn't resist (also had heard by then that the on-line was canceled because of little support). And what a value. There are many hours of gameplay here. It is also pretty hard, so have some patience because some of this hard to figure out.

The graphics are as always fantastic (especially the water. It looks awesome and I think they know it because there is water everywhere in this game). The scenery is more interactive than ever and there are alot of things moving here.

The sounds of the game are very good to, especially with some good headphones. I spent some time looking around checking everything out and I wasn't dissapointed.

You can also change your Avatar (this is a 1st or 3rd person game and you will need to use both) from clothes, to face, to sunglasses. And you will collect more items along the way which you can change in to.

Some of the puzzles were wierd, and they reminded alot of playing Riven which is one of the things I didn't really like as you had to go back and forth alot between ages. But there are many puzzles to solve and this is seamless, so you never know when you are playing Ages Beyond MYST or one of the expansion packs. There are also alot of books to read here (and you have to read them all or you will miss vital clues and answers for some of the puzzles), more than any of the other MYST games (maybe even more than the other 3 put together).

I had alot of fun, and if you are a MYST fan, this is an unbeatable deal.

Although Zork: Nemesis lacked the humor of the Zork games (In fact thiscould have easily been an independant game if the designers tweaked a thingor two) it still is an excellent adventure game and will keep youentertained time and time again.
The game is about four alchemists whowere trying to find the secret to immortality but were murdered by someonethat they refer to as 'the nemesis'.Their spirits plead with you torestore their symbols and elements and bring them back to life so that theycan complete their work and create the secret to immortality.
But thingsare not as they seem.As you travel through the realms of each of thealchemists you start to learn about their secrets and the true tale of howthey met their fates. Its a story of love, a story of manipulation, astory of betrayal, and a story of perserverence. In my book, THAT is thekind of story that makes for a wonderful adventure.
True, its much darkerthan one expects from the Zork genre. There are no jokes about theMagician's guild, no throck spells or hunguses to turn inside-out, but itis still an amazingly deep and unique adventure game.If you get a chanceto play this, please do!You won't regret it.

Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon

Okay I'll admit I was weary of buying this game as I'd heard it wasn't really an adventure but more of a hybrid. I found this to be compeletly false. This is strictly a third person view, adventure game. While not the normal point and click (you have to use the arrow keys like in Grimg Fandango and SOMETIMES a choice of up to four keys).I disagree with the previous reiveiw that this was hard to do without a joystick.I don't own a joystick as the only games I play are adventure games. While I will admit the game controls took me about five minutes to figure out, it didn't take away any enjoyment of the game, in fact it feel as though I'd just sloved the first puzzle! Honestly from me I felt the use of these buttons incorperated more enjoyment, with this game as sometimes (when George or Nico would have to climb a wall by pressing w or do they jump by pressing s)was a puzzle all in itself. There by making the game feel more real and the puzzles fully a part of the game. Also while I only play adventure games I am mediocore at them at best often falling to the use of walkthroughs.I found I only had to look at a walkthrough for this on the first stealth sequence as I'd never had to do one before.Yes there are some places that require stealth however the timing is easy to do, and for a person who hasn't played a game other than an adventure since pac man, I still didn't have too much trouble with it I can honestly say it didn't distract from the game.My only complaint was I felt the story could have used a bit more of an ending but with broken sword 4 currently in the works I don't mind too much :).I really loved this game and I rarley say that, infact the last time I liked a game enough to review it was.... the longest journey.I love the direction and chance this company took with trying out something different from the same old point and click (I never thought I'd type that before!) and hope to see more games like it in the future.Trust me if you liked the Gaberial Knight series or if you just want a good adventure check this game out.
