Mech Commander Gold Review

Mech Commander Gold
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mech Commander the original version was a good enough game, but Mech Commander Gold offers some much welcomed improvements. The original game offers explosive real time action mixed with the need for a cunningstratigic mind as you command up to twelve 'mechs in real time combat. After missions, you repair your mechs and claim salvage with which to planthe next mission. Also, you can purchase new 'Mechs or more experiencedpilots to control them. The values of the Gold add-on are new missions, sixnew 'Mechs an excellent ammo-conservation mode (this alone warrentspurchasing Gold) and a nifty waypoint system. All in all I'd say MechCommander Gold is one of the most enjoyable Mech games on the market. Addto this a large network of Multiplayer Leagues, and the fun continues asyou engage in combat with Mech Warriors from around the globe.

Guns of August : World War 1 1914-1918 Review

Guns of August : World War 1 1914-1918
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're interested in a WWI strategic level PC game, your choice is simple, as there is only one: Guns of August.

Guns of August does not abuse it's monopoly. While it pays heed to the "slogfest" nature of trench warfare, it avoids static game play.Infantry, cavalry, and artillery units of 6-7 nations at a time lurch across a compact, axial map of Europe from the French Atlantic coast to western Russia. The game is either single or two player, as there is no multi-player option. Email play is possible. Each player directs their units in an order phase, and then movement and combat are resolved simultaneously.

The Entente and Central power players are responsible for all the countries in their respective coalitions. This means deciding research, diplomacy, builds, and naval planning for, at times, 5-6 countries. This has been one criticism directed against the game, but in reality, decision making for the smaller countries is relatively brief.

A unique aspect of the game is the use of headquarter units that carry a number of "activations".Activation points are required for offensive actions. They require resources to build, and the limitation on their numbers means you have to choose where you will carry out offensives carefully.Without enough headquarters or activation points, offensives will stall, like Ludendorff's offensive of 1918.

The result is you concentrate artillery, infantry, and cavalry for offensives, much as occurred in reality in WWI. But there will be large areas of the "front lines" that are relatively peaceful.Artillery units can be used without activation points, and they will continue to blast away all over the map, slowly eroding your front line units.

The Central Powers have the heavier burden to carry to victory. The enormous army of Russia is pressing from the east, and once America enters the war, the Western Front gives way faster and faster.

Complaints: Italy and Russia arguably have an "ahistorical", excessive influence on the game.Air and naval power are abstract, and if your hoping to see biplanes fly across the sky, you won't here. The manual doesn't explain game concepts well-you'll have to play 2-3 times to develop an understanding of game play.

A very reasonable, thoughtful presentation of WWI strategy that will appeal predominately to the strategy/history grognard.

Homeworld Cataclysm Review

Homeworld Cataclysm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you enjoyed Homeworld this sequel is an absolute must! If you haven'tplayed Homeworld and enjoy real-time 3D strategy games you might want tocheck it out.
I've been playing games for a long time and have becomesomewhat jaded and difficult to impress. However the original Homeworldjust blew me way! Stellar graphics, an immersive story, great music and adream of an interface that smoothly integrated tactical and strategiccontrol.
Homeworld Cataclysm builds upon this base very well. Rather thanjust reusing the original "Mothership" and it's fleet of craft, the developers have created an entirely new fleet and set of technologiesfor you to explore.Years have passed in the Homeworld Universe and manynew technologies have been acquired beyond the original cloaking andgravity well generators. EMP vessels, holographic projections, covertdrones and much more add an even greater level of sophistication to thegameplay.
Of course the 3D battles are staggering. Full visual effects, coordinated sound and a high frame rate brings space battles, I imagined asa kid, to life. It makes me wish I had a Video Out on my graphic card totape to share the visuals.
The user interface has been polished to nearperfection. The control of a large and complex fleet is a pleasure, asopposed to the pain, compared to many simulation games. The few areas ofthe original Homeworld interface that were weak, such as selecting adistant location in three dimensions, have been greatly improved.
Thesound is still "realistic" and informative. The music isonly"good" this time around. The haunting and highly emotive music ofthe original is missing.
This game is far less buggy than mostsimulations I've played. But I did come across a small number that didn'tcrash the game, but an end of mission condition wasn't recognized. This canbe solved by a game restart an then reloading your last saved game ofrestarting the particular mission.
I've completed the single player gameand am taking a brief break before I go on-line and play multiuser. Withthe game's new fleet technologies, great visuals and smooth interface I'llactually enjoy experiencing the new ways I'll get my butt kicked by kidshalf my age.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (includes Mysteries of the Sith) Review

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The thing that's realy great about this set is that you get three CDs worth of games. You get the original Dark Forces II game that has quite abit of gameplay, PLUS the Mysteries of the Sith game that is almost as longas Jedi Knight. For the price you get a LOT of playing time.
Jedi Knightfollows the path of Kyle Katarn, an ex-Imperial soldier turned rebel.Hisfather was murdered and as the game progresses you learn the truth aboutyour family and learn the ways of the force.
One of the interestingtwists of Jedi Knight is that your alignment towards the dark side or thelight side is determined by how many innocent people you kill or by certainmoral decisions you make as the game progresses. You shape your owndestiny and at the end of it all your decisions determine how the storyturns out.
On the second game, Mysteries of the Sith, you primarialy playMara Jade... although you also spend time in Kyle Katarn's shoes onceagain.Much likes its predecessor you find yourself once again goingagainst the Empire before they destroy a Rebel base and ruin all hope theRebellion has against defeating the Imperial forces. From there you embarkon a search to find the lost Kyle Katarn and find your way through anamazingly twisted and trap ridden Sith Temple.
The thing that sets thesegames apart from most first person shooters is that you do more than runaround and kill things. You have to make moral decisions, solve puzzles, and use tactics to your advantage.By the first hour or so of gameplayyou'll easily lose yourself.
And finally, as an extra special bonus thereis a hidden level on the Mysteries of the Sith CD of Cloud City that allowsyou to follow in Luke's footsteps from Empire strikes Back.

Real War: Rogue States Review

Real War: Rogue States
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Real War enthusiasts will enjoy the latest in the series Rogue States, a Real War upgrade offering logic improvments and new weaponary on both sides. One caveat on this review is that I am basing it on only several "skirmish" episodes and not using online play or running any campaign scenarios
What is there to like...the new weapons, improved graphics, pre-orders for units being built, advanced defense logic for units, movement and attack logic are a definite improvment. All of these make Rogue States a good buy if you want to upgrade from Real War.
What still needs improvment...the movment logic is still a bit off...I tried to send a convoy of tanks at a target and half of them ended up getting stuck trying to cross a river. This has improved quite a bit, this should continue to be improved.I also would like to see Rogue states better integrated with the old Real War...it would be cool to go back and run the old campaign with new weapons. As far as I know this isn't the case.Lastly, there are still issues with forces causing extensive collateral damage...the new weapons are quite effective at takibng out most of your own forces as well as the enemies...I wish there was a bit better intelligence here to prevent this from happening on such a wide scale
What is bad...I am all for new weapons but the ILA (terrorist
group) but the use of experimental weapons gives them a big advantage.A laser cannon that liquidates ground forces instantly seems a bit unfair and unrealistic. The notion of this weapon having a weakness that can be exploited doen't appear obvious in this case. The U.S. doesn't appear to have a similar weapon that is that deadly. The fact that this weapon is super accurate makes ground attacks very frustrating.Combine the Rail Gun with the Super Cannon and Fixed GTA and the ILA base is pretty much impossible to assault...or shall I say your little skirmish you thought would only last 45 minutes will take 4-5 hours of game time.
Those things aside, I would say Rogue States is worth the price. The new weaponary and improved logic will give Real War addics a new opportunity to develop their tactics.Keep in mind too that ReaL War is NOT a pre-requisite for installing Rogue States.

I got this for someone who acquired a MacBook Pro but is still on dial-up. (Recent-model MacBooks don't have internal modems.) It was literally plug and play. A big relief! Didn't even need to load any software. It's been a few weeks and there have been no problems at all getting online.

One side note: It needs to be plugged into the actual USB port vs. a USB hub as the hub isn't going to have enough power for it.

USAF Review

USAF
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent hours playing USNF97 Viet Nam era missions, so I was eager to boot up Janes USAF.At first blush, this game looks terrific. With the appropriately sarcasticCol. "Scooter" Davis as your IP, you go through training at Nellis. In my case I flew most missions in the F-105 "Thud".Once through training, I started to fly some of the pre-set VN missions.
Here are the problems I see in this game that distract greatly from its overall rating.
1)Air launched missiles, Sparrow, Shrike and Sidewinder are 100% accurate.I had my setting at "Realistic".Reading of this era combat details how notorious the Sparrow was for just falling off the rails. If you launch, you will get a kill.
2)The worst problem, your wingman are ineffective. In flying a mission against the Paul Doumer bridge, I've taken 100% casualities most of the time, that is MigCap, Weasel and Strike aircraft all get shot down. Some of these are just crashing into the ground.I know it was rough and those men who flew the missions had a lot of guts, but in the game it is almost impossible to have a successful mission because the rest of team does not do their job.
3) The published patch is suppose to fix some of the A/I problems. However I have tried about half a dozen times and can't get it load.
4)For some reason the maps in the mission generator won't load.I have yet to figure this one out.
I really want to like this game.It is good for a couple of weeks, but does not seem to have the long term interest of EAW, Mig Alley or MSCS2-Pacific.

Simply put, this game is a kick azz killer.Even though it's about 4 years old, the graphics are great and the gameplay fun as ever. However, tribes has a steep learning curve (took me about 4 months to be able to hold my own) The training missions do help quite a bit (that AI could have some nasty aim) But the skillz will come with time. Team work is great (provided you join a decend team) Nothing is more satisfying than seeing your clanmates fight to retake their base that was overrun after an enemy invasion, load up a couple of bombers and bomb the enemy back to the iron age, then getting some guys in the enemy base too take it over - Then parking a tank or two and a Mobile point base with a morter turrent right next to the enemy base to maximize damage. If you get tribes, you will be in for some epic battles on land, in the air, and underwater. Don't miss out on this one ;) see ya on the battle field

Roller Coaster Tycoon Expansion Pack: Loopy Landscapes Review

Roller Coaster Tycoon Expansion Pack: Loopy Landscapes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Loopy Landscapes is the second expansion pack for the original Roller Coaster Tycoon.
For the price, you get quite a few extra goodies.Loopy Landscapes includes 30 new scenarios, 3 `real' pre-built-parks, new themes, new coaster designs, new shops/stalls, music and coloring options, plus a few new rides. It should be said upfront that this expansion also includes RCT's 1st expansion: Corkscrew Follies, so you don't need to purchase it as a separate item.
The scenarios, like the original and first expansion get progressively harder, and when you load it for the first time, only 5 of the scenarios are unlocked. You must complete a scenario here in order to unlock others. However, I think this is where Loopy Landscapes shines in game play: The new scenarios are much more dynamic, creative, and challenging than previous ones. Here, instead of the normal `Have 1,200 guests by the end of year 3', or `Have a Park Value of $XX,XXX' by the end of year 3', you'll find you have to create certain excitement levels on half built coasters, or create X coasters of Y type.My favorite so far is `Arid Heights' where you are free from any financial burdens....just a big sandbox mode in which to create a park that will attract 2000 guests.I like it because you are not restricted to time or money and can make a beautiful park.
Also Loopy Landscapes groups the scenarios by tabs. There is one tab each for the original game, Corkscrew Follies, Loopy Landscapes, Extra's, and Real Parks.Very cool to be able to switch between these. Also the `Real Parks' are just plain beautiful to look at and watch.Sure you can change them, but I like to study them for tips and hints on what you can bring into one of the other scenarios you are working on.
There are a few new coasters and a few new rides including `Jet Skis' and `Enterprise', but there are many new shops/stalls to choose from. The new coloring options have been expanded; you have more control over how a ride is now painted. There are many new tiles for roofing and ground cover, including snow, swamp, Martian, wood, etc. Also, there are new supports for different walkways and queue lines. The music scores for rides have been expanded as well; you must check out the `Oriental Style'....very beautiful. For a new expansion, I would have liked to see a few more new thrill rides.
Lastly is the new themes themselves. There is now Arctic, Medieval, Spooky, Space, and more. This adds so much creativity, but the biggest let down is that some of the older themes could have been expanded, but were not.Like Old West should have had maybe a saloon, more cacti, horse tie-ups, mine cars, etc.Or Jurassic could have had more dinosaur's, Egyptian and Greek could have been expanded too. There are some themes that are begging to be created, like Pirates, or Super Hero's, or Mexican. However, the Oriental theme was done very nice.
Overall, a worthy addition to RCT.

Roller Coaster Tycoon Expansion Pack: Corkscrew Follies Review

Roller Coaster Tycoon Expansion Pack: Corkscrew Follies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This expansion is more than an addition to the original Rollercoaster Tycoon game, it's like a whole other game. Besides the original features (see my review for RCT) this game includes 25 new scenarios, new rollercoaster types, new attractions (rides, ride enhancements, stalls, andshops), new colors and painting techniques, new landscaping items, newlandscaping themes, more entertainers, and more.
That may seem like a lotof new things, but it's less than it seems. That's why I gave it fourstars. Another game: almost all of those things have to be earned in oneway or another. Like you have to get the rest of the scenarios by startingwith the first five new ones (like the original game), and you have toresearch the attractions, themes, entertainers, etc.
Another cool featureis that you can have almost all the rides play music. There are a lot ofthem too (like rock, techno, gentlle, horror...) and it really adds a lotof life to the park, to you and your guests. As a whole (the RCT and theexpansion) this game is a sure winner. But Corkscrew Follies alone is notthe best or the biggest expansion for RCT, but it's sure worth ahard-earned twenty bucks.

Well what can I say, this game is excellent.Like all of the Command and Conquer games, the campaign mode, for all three factions, is fun and addictive. The skirmish mode allows you to extend the life of the game beyond the campaigns, but if you are like myself, you will find yourself wanting to download more maps to make things more interesting.I was very impressed with the risk like, campaign map on the Kane's Wrath add on.The only downside I can think of for this game, is the difficulty in creating ones own maps and editing the game stats. The world builder program is difficult to use, compared to the map editors available for previous C&C titles.Overall the game play is excellent, the graphics are amazing and the campaign mode on it's own, with the all star cast, makes the game well worth the money.

Aliens Versus Predator Gold Review

Aliens Versus Predator Gold
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
until you get into it.When I first started playing, this game was so frustratingly impossible, but when you get used to it, it stops being impossible and starts being a challenge. This game definitely makeswonderful use of all the source materiel, giving us a wonderfulcinematic-feeling experience. Now you can sympathize with what all thosepeople were feeling in the Alien movies.
The Alien is probably thehardest to play as.Granted it moves really fast and can walk on walls, but no ranged weapons, and no medkit, leave you exceptionally vulnerable tothe marines' rapid fire weaponry.
The Marine levels are also extremelydifficult, because as soon as an alien gets under your arc of fire, you'regood as dead.Fortunately, you get a full range of fun weapons.
But theeasiest, if least fun, is the Predator.Exceptionally strong, withauto-aiming vision, sniper weapons, and auto-recharging ammo, this guy'slevels are, at first, a lot easier than the other two.
Each of thecharacters has his own, linear, campaign, but these campaignes have nothingto do with each other. The multiplayer's lots of fun, the sounds areexcellent, the graphics are high-res, and run well, even with all thefeatures on, on a low end system.Plus, it takes less than 300 megs of HDspace and it doesn't require the CD!The music, while not award-winningmateriel, is moody, and the predator music recognizably borrows materielfrom his movie theme, while the Marine and Alien music is similar to theAliens action themes.
The enemies aren't incredibly diverse, but they'retough and they look cool, so that doesn't matter too much. And don't worryabout the difficulty level...The gold edition comes with the strategyguide.Overall, this is a very fun and addictive, if very hard, game toadd to your collection.Recommended.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Review

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This package contains both the "Game of the Year" edition of Dawn of War plus the Winter Assault expansion pack.

This "Game of the Year" edition of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (DoW) contains new battle maps, online features and an observer mode to enhance what was already a terrific RTS computer game. Each of the four races in the game look and behave as one would expect from Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 (aka 40K) universe. The Eldar are graceful and cultured in their speech and appearance (think High Elves in space), performing marvelous acrobatic moves in combat. Orks are brutal, awkward and ramshackle in their appearance and gait, Chaos Marines and their demonic minions are dark, cruel and monstrous while regular Space Marines (enhanced humans) are very industrial and all business. The animations in combat are so good you'll want to play some skirmishes on easy difficulty so that you can take your time looking close up at the individual fighting using the fully moveable 3D camera. There are even special "sync-kill" animations when certain creatures destroy each other. For example, when the Space Marine Commander kills a gigantic Bloodthirster (huge winged demon), the animation sequence is one of the most spectacular in the game!

The skirmish option offers both single and multiplayer modes with many different battle maps from which to choose. This offers near limitless permutations, providing tons of replayability. The campaign is a wee bit linear and not overly challenging, but is loads of fun, has an entertaining story and can be completed by all players regardless of skill level. Difficulty level settings can be used in both campaign and skirmish play to make the game more or less challenging as desired.

The voice acting and music are quite good in DoW and enhance play enormously. The game is highly evocative of the dark, gothic feel of the 40K miniatures game produced by Games Workshop (GW).

Resource gathering is used as is expected in an RTS game, but it is very simple and does not occupy an enormous amount of game time. The emphasis of DoW is all on the action and combat! Resources are gathered by capturing strategic points and critical locations on the battle map. Capture more territory and more resources will be available to you to complete your research and build your army.

Note that the expansion pack for this game, Winter Assault, provides players with even more maps and options, as well as a new fully playable army, The Imperial Guard. The Winter Assault campaign can be played from either of two points of view, "order" or "chaos," and involves a war against CPU controlled Necrons! Skirmish mode, as in the original Dawn of War, adds a lot of replayability value to the game, with many different battle maps and play combinations. Play any of five armies, play with allies or play free-for-all, and that's not counting multiplayer mode!

Between trying to hear all the fun voice acting, see all the great animations, and actually playing the game, Dawn of War Gold Edition will keep you busy and enthralled for many hours. "Let the galaxy burn!"

Dungeon Siege Review

Dungeon Siege
Average Reviews:

Saw this was out in jewel case for 10 bux (as of this review) and thought I might help you decide.Rest assured this game for this price is a great buy, here's why:

Graphics & Sound: the game looks great.Though some say there are better 3D type games out today this one pulls off the look well and the graphics are smooth. The environments look dazzling and there is little in the way of graphic glitches on most machines. The soundtrack and sound effects are great; and all of the sound fits the mood and environment of the game well. Some of the sound effects are amazing: echoes in caves and tunnels, bones crunching for skeletons, etc...Turn it up and enjoy!

I should note that the camera controls take a little getting used to - though you can modify all options via the in-game menus.Make sure you adjust all the settings to suit your needs and tastes (there are many customizable facets via Options)...

Gameplay & Fun factor: Nothing bad to say at all!Of course if you don't like running around beating up monsters, collecting treasure and magical toys, and saving the world then don't bother with this title: because that is what Dungeon Siege is all about! The story is simple and effective, getting you inot the action fast and furious. The game moves more or less nonstop and although there aren't any complex options for customizing characters or developing skills the simplicity makes the game that much more fun. There are more complex role-playing games out there - Dungeon Siege is not one of them.

If you have a home network this game is a blast. There isn't any adult-only materials in the game that I recall: save for the skeletons and monsters that can sometimes be a little gross. There is blood and gore but it can be switched off via the Options menu.

The original Dungeon Siege comes with 2 playable multi-player maps: the single-player campaign map and another map with a different storyline and slightly different world types. This is a great value for people playing multiplayer games!

Performance & System Notes: the specs on the package (recommended configuration) will run the game very well.Be sure that your Video & Sound drivers are up to date (very important) and disable any background programs (like virus scanners) to improve performance.

The various in-game options to configure video and sound allow for a broad range of optimization: even if your PC is slower or has trouble running the default settings you might be able to tweak it and play at a decent rate.

The 4 stars in this review reflects the fact the game, for some, can get very repetitive: there's a lot of killing monsters, finding treasure, and completing quests - if that bores you after the 300th monster slain then Dungeon Siege may get on your nerves.Happy hunting.

A world of adventure where you can explore sprawling landscapes in a seamlessly unfolding story awaits... Game Setting:Your adventures take place in the Kingdom of Ehb is one of the youngest states bordering the Plain of Tears. Protected by a ring of superb fortifications and heir to the 10th Legion-arguably one of the best trained armies in the world the Kingdom of Ehb has so far been shielded from the raids and invasions that have devastated many of its neighboring states on the Plain. Within Ehb's borders there is an astonishing diversity in geography and cultures. Most inhabitants worship Azunai an ancient god of the pre-Imperial Agallan Peaks. Dwarves and men live together in harmony and bow to the same king. Sorcerers are also more accepted than in other countries thanks in large part to the efforts of Merik Grand Mage and Warden of Shadows of the 10th Legion. And in the heart of the kingdom a strange and often contrary race called the Droog is allowed a degree of autonomy despite its sometimes-troublesome alliances. It is a country in search of an identity caught between the glories of a fallen past and the potential for an even greater future. Despite several crises Ehb has never fallen to an enemy. But at any time the course of events could turn down a bleaker path.Features:Group Comb

The Sims Triple Expansion Collection, Vol 2: Hot Date / Vacation / Makin' Magic Review

The Sims Triple Expansion Collection, Vol 2: Hot Date / Vacation / Makin' Magic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the original SIMS game and so do my kids. This expansion pack had the two games I wanted, Vacation and Magic, plus an extra, Hot Date. This was the best deal I could find for these two games anywhere. Magic is really a lot of fun...and pretty challenging, too. Vacation is a lot easier, I think it's a little boring but both of my kids are younger and love it. I worried about Hot Date, but actually it's pretty tame...Overall this is a great value for a lot of fun.

Caesar III Review

Caesar III
Average Reviews:

This is one of my favorite games. It is simple enough to pick up and play, yet it takes awhile to learn exactly how it works. (There is some great information out on the internet to help you along.) Trying to get your city to work just right is very addicting. I have replayed many of the scenarios several times, trying out different approaches to the problems they present.

I originally bought it years ago, and just picked up a used one to be able to play it on my laptop, if my kids are playing it on the desktop.

If you like the city-building games, this one is a must-have. It is definatly a classic.
