ZEN Pinball Review

ZEN Pinball
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually downloaded this directly from the PSN store where they were having a half-price sale on some PS3 and PSP downloads.

The ZEN features VERY well designed tables. The physics are simply fantastic and, with the Dual Shock controller you really feel the game. The download comes with 4 tables: Shaman, Tesla (my favorite), El Dorado and V12. They are pretty well done but... it's only 4 and it gets boring quickly. At the time I am writing this review 2 extra table, including the Ninja Gaiden could be downloaded for about $2.50 each for a total of 6 tables.

Once you select a table you can play it in a solitaire mode or you can do multi-player over the PlayStation Network or join a 'tournament' or you can have more than one player taking turns if playing with friends or family at home. Even when you play in solitaire mode, your scores are recorded and you can see various stats that compare you against everyone else who plays that table. I, for example, I am somewhere in the 170,000's on Tesla and 6500's on V12.

When you play online, the person who organizes the game sets a goal - like 5,000,000 points, for example and, whomever, from the party of 4, gets there first wins. It's interesting that, if the online game starts with fewer than 4 or someone drops, someone else can join a game in progress but, of course, it's difficult to win because you'd be starting with a handicap.

For what I paid - five dollars - I am happy with the purchase. I'm not sure if the game is worth the full price, given that you will be paying more for more tables. My suggestion is to try the PSN demo where you can play El Dorado minus the network options, plus some extra time needed to re-download the game once your current game ends.

I will give the ZEN 4-stars: pluses for the super-realistic pinball simulator but subtracting a little for the scarcity of tables and for the not so exciting online modes.

I was disappointed that I had to buy Big Kahuna Reef 2 because Big Kahuna Reef quit working when I re-fomatted my computer. However, I am so glad I did because it is even more fun than the first version.I am not a person that usually gets addicted to video games, but this game is a great way to relax and zone out at the end of a work day.It is not one of those games that requires a lot of concentration and it is not stressful at all.Best of all, it is a game I can safely share with my school-age daughter.

Portal Review

Portal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The game is a blast to play, if you are into physics-based puzzles. I'm not going to describe it, because it's well-described elsewhere (Wikipedia, for instance). So the question comes down to, "Is it worth buying?" And the answer is a qualified yes.

The game is short. Yes, really short. Compared to the typical puzzle game ("Myst", etc.), you blast through this in half the time (or less). But what is cut out is all the "envirnoment exploration". It has just as many puzzles as the typical puzzle game, but none of that walking around and looking at the scenery stuff. No bits where you have to go to island A to get the key that opens a lock in island B, which gives you the answer to a puzzle back on island A again, etc.

But it's not sudoku, either. GLaDOS is hilarious and menacing at the same time. Even with no other visible characters to interact with, the plot is a surprisingly important part of the experience. You start to get emotionally attached to the idea that you are a lab rat trying to get out of the maze before you get euthanized.

So, yes, it's worth the money. It's short, but intense. In the same way that an hour-long movie might be better than that same movie stretched out to three hours, I'm not sure the game would have worked if it was much longer than it is. In fact, I bought the whole "Orange Box" just to try this game, and I'm happy with the purchase. (That doesn't mean I'm not also going to play Half-Life, eventually.)

If I want to just kill hours on the computer, I can play solitaire. What I wanted was what I got -- an exciting and challenging set of puzzles with a surprisingly compelling plot as a bonus.

Shadowgate Review

Shadowgate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Knowing how far video games have come in the past few years, it is easy to forget the classics. "Shadowgate" is considered by many to be one of the best and most innovative RPGs of it's time, and is still a hot item amongst older gamers (like me) to this day.
You are an adventurer who is on a quest to stop the evil Warlock Lord, who has the power to destroy humanity. So you enter Castle Shadowgate in order to seek out the Warlok Lord and end his reign. Of coarse, nothing come easy. You encounter dangerous beasts, ghosts, and if you fail, death himself. You also have to solve mind-bending puzzles, which is the main appeal of this game. You have to rely more on your brains and wits rather than your sword. The game is quite difficult the first time through, and will definitely keep you busy for a few days at least. But there in lies the big flaw in "Shadowgate". There is no replay value. Once you have beaten the game, you know all the secrets and can easily breeze through the second time around. I beat this game in two weeks, but the second time I beat it in less than 45 minutes. But considering the age of this game, it is not a huge downer. It is still a fun trip down memory lane.
In terms of graphics, they are great by NES standards. The colors and textures add depth to any given situation, while the music also compliments the mood. Since this is an old-school RPG, the emphasis is more on story and puzzles rather than action and fighting.
For games who want to experience games from their childhood, or see where games like "Final Fantasy" came from, you should check out "Shadowgate".

This package actually includes 2 games in 1 - Crazy Machines and Crazy Machines 1.5. This bonus is not advertised on the box, but is printed on the disc face. Over 400 challenging puzzles! This is a much better deal than buying them seperately.

Just a few words of warning: This game is 3D accelerated so you will need the proper hardware to run it (I recomend nVidia graphics cards). Also, this version is Windows only (no Mac support like the seperate versions). The game uses very little hard drive space (about 150MB) and runs fine in Windows Vista too.

Buy this game! I highly recomend it!

Puyo Pop Fever Review

Puyo Pop Fever
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The only other version of Puyo Pop I've played was on the GBA and I have to say that Puyo Pop Fever is an improvement in just about every way. The graphics are about as slick and colorful as you're going to get on a Tetris like puzzle game but this is definitely not a game that's designed to exploit the dual screens. The action is all on the top screen and although you can use the stylus interface to control your Puyo I prefer using the classic button control system.

Every game with dropping blocks tends to get labeled a `Tetris clone' but Puyo Pop is more closely akin to Dr. Mario in that the goal is to align like colors to free up space. With Fever, players now get to contend with new three and four block Puyo's. The hook is that when four or more blocks of the same color touch and disintegrate you also wreak havoc on your opponent's area. As blocks are obliterated other blocks may drop into the freed up space causing additional colors to align and `pop'. This is called chaining and the more chaining you can perform the more nastiness you throw your opponent's way. Players are forced to arrange for chaining rather than just try and clear their era.

The new `fever' mode is a way to cause some hellacious mayhem by setting up ready made chains that can be capitalized on when placing blocks in the perfect spot. Suddenly five and six chains become easy to perform.

One of the flaws in the GBA version was the problem of over efficiency. If you clear out your own area you suddenly find yourself caught with no defense. Fever corrects the problem by rewarding good play rather than punishing it. When an area is cleared the game drops a pile of new blocks into your area with ready made chains that can be exploited. This small tweak makes a huge improvement in the game. The game still seems to play a bit unfair against the CPU. Winning and losing is often as much a matter of poor play on the part of the CPU as it is stellar play on the part of the player. I've had many games where I seemed to be playing well and lost and others where I was playing poorly and quickly won.

Product Description:
When Alexey Pajitnov, creator of Tetris (one of the most addictive games of all time), designs a new puzzle title, fans everywhere perk their heads up and take note. While it's not quite up to the irresistible standard set by its legendary predecessor, Microsoft's Pandora's Box: Puzzle Game of the Year Edition was named Puzzle Game of the Year by the Electric Games website, and offers hours of nonviolent, uncomplicated enjoyment through its 10 different types of puzzles.
Nearly all of the Pandora's Box conundrums resemble the traditional jigsaw puzzle, though you'll find plenty of visual twists, such as sliding pieces on a circular plane or having to solve a puzzle built on a complex 3-D object. Some deviate from this formula, but the most addictive puzzles follow this model, and those provide the most extended--and replayable--diversions.
For those overwhelmed by complex computer games, Pandora's Box: Puzzle Game of the Year Edition offers a simplistic interface and basic rules, easing computer novices into the puzzle environment. This edition features 40 new puzzle games, as well as the original 350 puzzles from the original Pandora's Box. There are five difficulty levels, plus various hints and wildcards that remove the frustration factor when you're unable to complete a particular puzzle. Looking for new puzzle games to replace your Tetris addiction? Check out Alexey Pajitnov's engrossing Pandora's Box: Puzzle Game of the Year Edition. --Doug Radcliffe

Luxor 3 Review

Luxor 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After ZUMA's success, a number of clones appeared - but the LUXOR series is the one that actually improved on some aspects of the concept. As the series progressed, LUXOR games became more and more self-reliant. With LUXOR 3 the franchise finally comes to age.

A series of colored balls (with the number of different colors increasing every few levels) gets pushed and you have to match them in sets of three or more in order to remove them - and prevent them from reaching the end zone. Instead of having the "shooter" in the center, it is located at the bottom and it slides left and right. This makes for some quite difficult shots (especially when obstructed by the advancing row of balls) and raises the difficulty of the game.
On the other hand, the power-ups are more powerful, at the end of every round a number of coins and gems drop and "catching" them add lives to your paddle. It seems pretty straight-forward yet it can become highly...addictive!

Compared to the first installment of the series, LUXOR 3 is graphically more impressive, enriched as to the dropping bonuses (and...penalties) - yet it will seem somewhat easier to seasoned players of the series; nevertheless, it will fulfill the fans craving for more pharaohnic fun!

This is an example of what has come to be known as Casual Gaming: small, resource-light games that are fun for the whole family.
It would be a good idea to download the 60-min trial version from a casual games site, such as REFLEXIVE (you can Google it), and decide for yourself whether this is indeed your cup of tea. It wouldn't hurt to wait for the price to drop either: most casual games sell for no more than $10.

RECOMMENDED!

Lumines Review

Lumines
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I purchased this game on launch day, I only knew one thing about it:It was made by the same guy who made REZ.Really, that's all I needed to know to part with my cash.

REZ is a hard to find shooter title for Dreamcast/PS2 that set itself apart by completely integrating the visuals and the gameplay with the music.

Lumines, although the game itself is completely different, also delivers big on this concept. Each action you take, rotating the falling peices, destroying a square of same-colored blocks, setting off a huge combo, all trigger unique musical embellishments and sound effects that go with the soundtrack for each level. This in itself would be enough to make a game engrossing, but the mechanics and hectic pacing of the game make it all the more addictive.

Lumines is a falling blocks game, but it is in no way a tetris clone.Squares fall in blocks of four, and come in two colors, arranged in the block at random.By arranging the squares into 2x2 blocks of like colors, a bar that moves across the screen will clear it.Squares can be as big as you want, and can overlap. Also, depending on the music for the stage, the bar may move faster or slower. There are also special blocks that will clear all blocks of the same color that are touching it.It sounds simple, and it is, but the most addictive puzzle games always are.

This game belongs with every PSP purchase.

I bought this game for my two boys because I recall seeing them playing this game on the PC.It looked cool. They were excited when they found out I got it.

I decided to try it out myself as I am a gamer with my own Nintendo DS. I was immediately drawn into this game! You draw lines for the rider to ride on to get from beginning to end. Lines are drawn in certain areas but in any direction you want and in 3 speeds to pick from.

This game is so unique from other games I've played that I LOVED it alot.To me it's like experimenting with gravity and the way the rider will go. There is no other game like it.I think it takes special people to like this game.More like puzzle & strategy type of a game with lots of thinking and re-trying.

LOVE IT!! Can't say enough of it.I hope they come out with Line Rider 3.I'll have to try Line Rider 1 on the PC but I'm sure it isn't the same as playing on the DS.

By the way the boys (8 and 10 yrs old) love it as well.
