Gary Gadget: Building Cars (Win/Mac) Review

Gary Gadget: Building Cars
Average Reviews:

This game is perfect for my son as he works on cars with his grandfather at his auto body shop.My son is 8 and it appears that he'll get bored with the game fairly quickly as it's not very challenging for an 8 year old.I'd say that ages 5-8 would work best for this game.

Crazy Machines Gold Review

Crazy Machines Gold
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This package actually includes 2 games in 1 - Crazy Machines and Crazy Machines 1.5. This bonus is not advertised on the box, but is printed on the disc face. Over 400 challenging puzzles! This is a much better deal than buying them seperately.

Just a few words of warning: This game is 3D accelerated so you will need the proper hardware to run it (I recomend nVidia graphics cards). Also, this version is Windows only (no Mac support like the seperate versions). The game uses very little hard drive space (about 150MB) and runs fine in Windows Vista too.

Buy this game! I highly recomend it!

LEGO Drome Racers Review

LEGO Drome Racers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you want a game with your favorite lego technic vehicles, awesome race/battles, and most of all, incredible realism, then this is the game for you!
This game offers 3 different modes of play:
Quick Race-Random Track and Vehicle
Arcade-Chose your track and Vehicle
Career-Work through the Multi-Challenge Races to win the Drome Racers cup!
There are also 3 different types of terrain and vehicles:
-Street
-Off-Road
-Drag Race
A street race normally takes place in a big city. In a street race, the cars have thin racing slicks and are faster than the off-roaders.
An off-road race takes place on a dirt track. Off-road races have "hazards" such as tornado, lava, falling boulders, etc. The cars have thicker tires and are the slowest of all.
The drag race stage is much different. The cars are automatically manual transmission, so you don't just hold down the accelerator the whole way down the long strip of pavement. Be careful! If your rpm's get to high, your engine will blow.
So, once again, if you like extremely detailed lego racing, buy this game!

World of Goo Review

World of Goo
Average Reviews:

This is a puzzle type game unlike any other. You basically work against the laws of gravity and physics while trying to get your balls of goo from point A to point B by building structures with them. The imagination and creativity that went into this game is unbelievable. The 2D graphics are gorgeous and the music, atmospheric. Although somewhat vague, there is a story that ties the puzzles together and it adds some humor to the events that unfold as you progress, especially toward the end. This is a game that has to be played to be fully understood because it is hard to describe. I thoroughly enjoyed this and didn't want it to end. I still go back and play some of my favorite levels.

One final note: This ia a computer friendly game.Easy to install, small file size and most importantly, no DRM.

Crazy Machines 1.5 Review

Crazy Machines 1.5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This version actually contains two separate games: "Inventor's Training Camp" and "New From the Lab."Like the original Crazy Machines, each consists of a series of puzzles (e.g., "put this ball in that box") that you have to solve by devising Rube-Goldberg-like contraptions using various equipment at hand (e.g., belts, gears, motors, explosives, etc.).They are great fun--both for adults and children.

"Inventor's Training Camp" is exactly what it sounds like--a set of easy challenges to help beginners learn about various elements in the Crazy Machines lab.In addition to the elements from the first version, it add things like a frog that hops when you touch it, a mouse that runs when you hit its tail, a teapot, colored blocks, and a top hat.The interface has more primary colors in it than the original "Crazy Machines" and some of the icons are different. But basically it works like the original game.Overall, the "Training Camp" it is a great way to get oriented in how the game works. If you have not played the game before, this is the place to start.

"New From the Lab" has the same look and feel as the original "Crazy Machines," but it also adds several new elements (these new elements are different from the new elements in "Inventor's Training Camp").These include a timer switch (good for time bombs), a wheel with five paddles, an old-fashioned phonograph (that plays a funny "la la, la la, la la" tune when powered with a belt), a wrecking ball, and wheeled carts. The new devices really do add a lot to the game-play experience.

Both of these games have a "My Lab" mode where you can just tinker around with the elements.More interestingly, you also can create your own puzzles for other players to solve. Thus, you can indefinitely add on to the 100 or so puzzles that come with the game. You also can export your custom-made games to disk and play them on other computers.I can see how this could be very, very fun for friends to exchange their own custom-made puzzles. My son and I already have just started doing this for each other.

This is a wonderful, wonderful, family computer game--one that I wish were around when I was a boy.My five-year-old son and I have spent, literally, scores of hours playing various versions of the Crazy Machines franchise together. It really is a game where parents and children can play as equals. It does not promote violence (OK, there are lots of explosive devices, but nobody ever gets hurt--except the robot). And it is not typical children's software pabulum.I think it really does teach problem-solving skills, too.Countless times while playing, my son declares "Oh, I have an idea!" and then tests his idea out to see whether it will solve the problem. And, in the process, he is learning things about gravity, electricity, steam, fire, light, and mechanics.

As for recommended ages, 5 to 95 would be a good range. My 5-year-old son had some problems with the interface at first, but now is a pro and can--and does--work the puzzles by himself.Parents with small children should put in the time helping kids learn it, as it can be frustrating at first. Also, some of the puzzles require the ability to read instructions, which may be a challenge for beginning readers.

I have some complaints about the game, however.

First, it is habit-forming.I am a 36-year-old lawyer.I have a five-year-old son.I don't know who is more addicted to the game. Each of us spend, literally, hours a week on it.We look forward to Saturday mornings when we have a long block of time in which to play it (while my wife is taking daughter to dance lessons).

Second, it does not appear to come with an instruction manual or on-line help system. The game can be a bit bewildering at first. This might deter some users from pressing forward, which would be a shame.Even seasoned users can find the lack of instructions to be frustrating.Only recently have I happened upon shortcut keys ("x" for zooming in and out, "s" for starting/stopping the experiment, "v" for adding/removing shadows, "t" for testing the experiment in "My Lab.")This is particularly frustrating in the My Lab area when trying to devise your own puzzle. It takes a while to learn how to establish the objectives for your experiment (hint: adding a flag to an object creates a goal for the experiment, as does dragging collision-target arrows for movable objects to a blue "target zone" box).If there were an instruction manual--even a short one--it really would add to the enjoyment of the game.(On the other hand, enterprising users can just view the absence of a manual as yet another puzzle to solve . . . )

Third, it crashes with much more frequency than it should.I am running it on two Windows XP computers that have more than adequate horsepower: one is a Pentium IV and one is a Core2Duo.Both have oodles of RAM and capable graphics cards.Yet it crashes about once every hour or two of play. Not a huge deal, but annoying when it happens.

Fourth, I find the professor (who chimes in with comments at random times) to be annoying.Happily, you can shut him up by disabling the professor option in the settings screen.

Overall, however, I highly recommended Crazy Machines 1.5.For existing Crazy Machine addicts, buy this.It will help to pass the time until Crazy Machines 2 comes out (supposedly at the end of 2007).The additional elements are worth the price. For new users, I would recommend buying both 1.0 and 1.5.Heaps of fun.If you are not entirely convinced, buy 1.5 and start in the "Training Camp."You will be an addict soon.

Trine Review

Trine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Trine' is a 3rd person, horizontal platform scroller, which I downloaded through 'Steam'; the cost...$29.99

However, don't let my opening statement regarding 3rd person scroller, put you off; this is an interesting and addictive game. In fact it won the 'Best Downloadable game' by 'Gamespot's' 3E Editor's Choice Awards.

The Game:

Three characters (a wizard, a thief and a knight) are physically joined into one person by a magic object called the 'Trine'. They must travel (all the while using their collective skills of conjuring, jumping, swinging and fighting), an evil-laden labyrinth to escape, and thus return themselves into their individual persons.

Each character has different 'skills'. The wizard...object creation and levitation; the thief...a powerful bow and grappling-hook device; and the knight...a fighters sword and shield AND a hammer. Only one character can be activated at a time so you must determine which 'skills' are needed to accomplish the task/puzzle before you.

As you proceed along you will find 'treasure chests' with upgrades and bonuses; there are also experience points gained while fighting, with which you can upgrade your characters abilities and skills. And this is were the game really becomes interesting, because sometime these chests and bonus vials are just visible at screens edge, so you need to figure out a way to get to these precious objects, in order to obtain the bonuses contained within.

The only annoying thing about this game is the game-save method; games are automatically saved at game-generated checkpoints; if all characters die, you restart back at the last checkpoint reached...and this is OK because this checkpoint is usually not too far back, The problem is if, for some reason, you must exit the game and restart at a later time (without having finished the last level you were on)...because then, you must restart from the very beginning of the level. So a restart at the beginning of the last level is not only quite repetitive but also very irritating, because some of the levels are quite long.

Conclusion:

This is not a particularly long game...maybe 8-10 hours if played continuously, but it is addictive and it's one of those games that just keeps you coming back. It does have some replay value as you'll probably not find all the 'bonuses' on the first time through. Lack of full, anytime game saves is a minus...and thus the loss of 1/2 star. 4 1/2 Stars.

BTW, the ending is quite tricky.

Ray Nicholson

Crazy Machines: The Wacky Contraptions Game Review

Crazy Machines: The Wacky Contraptions Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, let me say that this is a great game. It's loads of fun for the whole family to play, and it runs smoothly on even my older Mac G4.

That said. My whole family was stumped about what to do when plugging cords into machines in the game. If you've run out of plugs, the other end of the cord just floats there, and you cannot continue the game! Nowhere in the manual does it mention that you can give up on a cord by pressing the 'ESC' key. I suppose that's a good key to choose, and it makes sense, but they simply forgot to mention it in the manual, and we wasted a whole day trying to play the game and getting stuck over and over.
