Ideazon Merc Stealth Illuminated Gaming Keyboard Review

Ideazon Merc Stealth Illuminated Gaming Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I owned the older version of this key board for a couple years (it still works by the way I just like new keyboards every couple years). The main difference between this one and the old one, is that this one has lighted keys. I gotta say, I am really glad I upgraded to the lighted model. I write at night, and sometimes I just hate turning on the room lights. The lighted keys are especially useful for web browsing or some other mouse-heavy activity that requires you to re-orient yourself to type... typically my eyes are adjusted to the bright screen and I can't really see the key board at night. The illuminated keys allow me to re-orient to the keyboard with a glance.
The keyboard is solid, tight, and nice to write on. It is evenly lit and has that nice new keyboard sound. :)

Also, the keyboard has two USB ports, as well as microphone /headphone jacks. These are conveniently located on the back of the unit so the cables are easy to reach, but won't interfere with the operation of the keyboard. The USB ports work great. My headset uses the USB ports so I cannot address the utility of the mic/headphone jacks, but it should keep many people from stringing headset wires all over--especially if you do not have easily accessible jacks on your computer.
It is easy to switch key-illumination colors/intensity with a small button near the F1-F2 keys.

One reviewer mentioned that this keyboard's keys must be closer together than others because he found it awkward to type. I found that the width of the keyboard is (backspace to ~) is the same width as the one that originally came with my PC from Dell. However, I also noticed a slight awkwardness when I first started using this type of keyboard several years ago... I suspect it comes from positioning myself in the middle of the keyboard--which is not the middle of the typing keys. The functional gaming keys on the left side cause you to be a little off center from your usual typing orientation if you center the whole system to your body. You will get used to this over time, or you can take care to orient yourself to the typing keys. If you write much, you will find you naturally adapt to this keyboard rapidly.

There is one more thing: the keyboard is wider than a standard keyboard. This was necessary to add the functional keys on the left side while keeping everything else standard-sized. This could affect how you store your keyboard if you have a slide-out keyboard drawer on your desk. I have a standard-sized keyboard drawer and it works great for typing--the size is fine for supporting the over-sized keyboard and typing. But the keyboard is too wide to just slide into the desk. You will need to rotate the keyboard about 45 degrees to stow it in the desk's keyboard drawer. For many of us this is no big deal, but some people may want to know this ahead of time.

I am very please with this keyboard.

Xbox 360 Memory Unit 512MB Review

Xbox 360 Memory Unit 512MB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this memory card to move my profile and saved games from one Xbox 360 to a newer one, and it worked perfectly. The process of copying data from the hard drive to the memory card is simple and fast, and I may keep the card as a backup in case something happens to our new Xbox in the future.

4/5 stars, however, because I consider this product to be far overpriced for what it is. Since the Xbox 360 has standard USB ports, the only thing preventing you from using a standard USB drive (flash or hard drive) to backup your data is the built-in limitations of the Xbox itself. This feels unfair, as the only reason I can think for not allowing the use of USB drives for storage was to force people to buy overpriced memory cards and hard drives.

This is just an inconvenience, and I can't complain too much since I did buy one. If you need a way to backup your save games, or if you are buying a newer machine and want to transfer your data, this is the best way to go, and I do recommend buying one for that purpose.

ZEN Pinball Review

ZEN Pinball
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually downloaded this directly from the PSN store where they were having a half-price sale on some PS3 and PSP downloads.

The ZEN features VERY well designed tables. The physics are simply fantastic and, with the Dual Shock controller you really feel the game. The download comes with 4 tables: Shaman, Tesla (my favorite), El Dorado and V12. They are pretty well done but... it's only 4 and it gets boring quickly. At the time I am writing this review 2 extra table, including the Ninja Gaiden could be downloaded for about $2.50 each for a total of 6 tables.

Once you select a table you can play it in a solitaire mode or you can do multi-player over the PlayStation Network or join a 'tournament' or you can have more than one player taking turns if playing with friends or family at home. Even when you play in solitaire mode, your scores are recorded and you can see various stats that compare you against everyone else who plays that table. I, for example, I am somewhere in the 170,000's on Tesla and 6500's on V12.

When you play online, the person who organizes the game sets a goal - like 5,000,000 points, for example and, whomever, from the party of 4, gets there first wins. It's interesting that, if the online game starts with fewer than 4 or someone drops, someone else can join a game in progress but, of course, it's difficult to win because you'd be starting with a handicap.

For what I paid - five dollars - I am happy with the purchase. I'm not sure if the game is worth the full price, given that you will be paying more for more tables. My suggestion is to try the PSN demo where you can play El Dorado minus the network options, plus some extra time needed to re-download the game once your current game ends.

I will give the ZEN 4-stars: pluses for the super-realistic pinball simulator but subtracting a little for the scarcity of tables and for the not so exciting online modes.

HDMI Cable 6FT: 1.3a Category 2 (Full 1080P Capable) Review

HDMI Cable 6FT: 1.3a Category 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I bought my LCD TV, I paid a fortune for an HDMI cable at the retail store.Stupid me, I should have known better about the outrageous markups many retail stores put on video accessories.Recently, I bought several of these cables at a fraction of the price I paid for that first one, and I used them to connect a Blu-ray player, an Xbox360, and an audio/video receiver.Even with the high shipping cost, these cables are much cheaper than I found elsewhere. And they work just fine.

Remember, HDMI cables transfer digital info -- they pass bits, not an analog signal -- so, basically, they either work or they don't work. You'll either see the complete picture and hear the audio, or you won't (if the cable is defective). These are not like analog cables where cheaper, poor-quality cables can result in a poorer picture or sound. So if you get any HDMI cable that works, you won't get any better quality by paying for more expensive HDMI cables.Reviewers that say they see a poorer picture with cheaper HDMI cables are fooling themselves and don't understand digital vs. analog.

Warhawk Review

Warhawk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a gamer for a long time and have particularly been a fan of Shooter games especially on the PC. Somehow, online multiplayer shooters have never been my cup of tea. I have tried Battlefield series, Resistance and a few others.

The main reason is that even after putting in weeks I continue to suck at these games. Somehow, that stops being fun very soon.

However, I think I have finally found my Multiplayer addiction. I picked up Warhawk as an impulse buy and after just two days I am absolutely hooked.

The graphics etc. are pretty good. It has some issues with stats and online leaderboards. Lacks some lobby features. Some of these are going to be addressed soon, others we'll have to live with.

What makes this game one of the best I have played, however, is the gameplay. For the first time learning the game was actually fun. While I am pretty bad at it, I can still have fun being bad. It takes a few hours to learn the ropes. I suggest you download/read the manual and a few online guides. After that this game has me totally hooked. I am giving it 5 stars for it's mind blowing gameplay. Even the initial learning curve is hugely fun.

Pick it up if you like shooters. You will "Get" online multiplayer gaming with this.

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Review

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already reviewed the Limited Edition of this game but I believe this game is so great I had to review it again.First of all thank heavens for Street Fighter IV.Because of the success of that game, (yeah, go get that one too if you haven't already), the 2-D fighting genre has been revitalized.Anyway, back to the review, there are many elements to BlazBlue that make it such a great fighter. So if you wanna know why I gave this game 5 stars, read on!

First thing is the diverse cast of characters. Each character in BlazBlue plays completely different. In some games, if you've mastered one character, you've mastered half of them. This is not the case here.Aksys accomplishes this with an interesting mechanic called the Drive System. Each character's drive can be performed by simply pressing a button. This simple action opens up a wealth of possibilities. For one character, it enables you to freeze them.Another character's drive allows them to control the wind, giving you further control over your movements and even your projectiles movements.Yet another's character's will drain their opponents life and... well...you get the picture! You WILL find a character you fall in love with!I play mainly with the general who freezes and the kid vampire who controls wind.Which brings me to another point. Not only do the characters play differently they LOOK completely different too.The characters designs are completely over the top, thought not in a way which will repulse you.You do have some insane characters though. There is a scientist whose degenerated into a goo of insects, an asian doctor with huge boobs, a cat girl, and so on.Really the character designers had no problem thinking out of the box.

The second reason I love this game are the fighting mechanics themselves.BlazBlue does a couple of things to further differentiate itself from other games in it's genre.First, there is the combo system.Unlike SFIV, which to me felt like most of the combos were scripted, Blue's combo system encourages expirementation. Each combo relies on a stun value each hit produces. If you can get another move out before the character recovers, then you can create a combo. If you hit a character and create a "counter", which the game will announce, then the stun value is extended even more, letting you create some other combos not otherwise possible.Although there are some bread and butter combos, I was able to come up with some pretty awesome combos on my own, including some which takes more than half damage.I also enjoyed Blue's defense system.Instead of just holding back, you have the option of adding a barrier, which pushes back your opponents from you.You can also hit back at the moment an opponent attacks you. This gives you a shorter recovery time, allowing for some counters. And finally you have the barrier burst. The barrier burst drains all your barrier gauge, but stops any combo and pushes your opponent across the screen. This is very handy for stopping those insanely damaging combos, but leaves you in a "danger" state where you can no longer use your barrier, and you take about 25% more damage for the rest of the match.

The graphics in this game are simply phenomenal, and will appeal to those who appreciate anime and just great art in general. The characters are all high res 2-D sprites and beautifully animated. The backgrounds are combination of 2-D and 3-D and look great. As far as the music, many people have fallen in love with blue's soundtrack but apart from a few numbers, was mostly forgettable for me.As long as it didn't distract from the game, I was good.I did enjoy the sound effects though.

Finally, BlazBlue excels in it's online component. There is occasional lag but this is mostly limited to the introduction of each match. The actual matches themselves are almost flawless.Blue also lets you record your matches, and download other user's matches.A cool thing is that these are not huge video files. I believe it works by the game recording all the controller inputs, and then replaying them, thus effectively recreating the match.I'm not sure if this has been done before but I thought this was pretty clever, since this takes a minimal amount of space in your hard drive.

Wow, I could go on and on and on but I would easily double the length of this review.Blaz has multiple game modes, it looks great, and most importantly, it's just plain fun!Do yourself a favor and buy this game!Highly recommended!

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger by Aksys Games is a 2D one-on-one fighting game, which features an original cast (including many weapon fighters) and uses a four-button control scheme (weak, medium and strong attacks plus an EX button which makes your character perform unique special attacks). The fighting system is based around the ability continue combos when opponents are in a down state. On the defensive side, you'll have a number of ways of getting back up when down, so combo attacks don't pummel you. BlazeBlue employs the Type X2 arcade board and mixes 3D characters and 3D backdrops.

Heavenly Sword Review

Heavenly Sword
Average Reviews:

Heavenly Sword is truly an amazing and entertaining experience. My brother and I rented this game and played thorough it in 2 nights. It probably took us about 8-10 hours to get through since some of the bosses were a little tricky. What stood out to me the most about this game was its production value.I have never seen acting so good in a game before, and not just the voice overs. You really began to love the heroes in the game and truly hate the villains, one in particular.Much of this level of quality was due to Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings' Gollum, King Kong) who headed up the motion capture and voice recording as well as playing the part of the main antagonist in the game, King Bohan.

Everything was done so well down to the smallest detail, the level of quality was outstanding. The game looked great in game and during the cut seans. There were many moments where we had to stop playing and just take in the beautiful landscape. This is definitely a game to show off your PS3 system, I like the rope running sequence myself.

The game play was also top notch. It focuses mostly on melee combat and shooting. There is no real platforming to speak of.Switching between different fighting styles (speed, ranged, and strong) and performing counters was innovative and a lot of fun.As were the shooting sequences using the sixaxis to guide arrows and cannon balls were fun as well and a great use of the technology.Overall the controls were tight and worked very well for this type of game.

I would have to say that Heavenly Sword is up there with my most memorable gaming experiences and is truly an amazing game.If you own a PS3 you owe it to your self to buy or at least rent this game. You won't be sorry.

Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote Review

Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did not think I needed yet another remote control because I thought the six-axis had everything it needed for movie playing on the PS3 and, yet, I bought one. There were 2 initial reasons:

- my wife was missing a 'magic wand' shaped remote for playing movies
- Amazon had it at a great price in one of them lightning deals

I ended up using it myself and, in fact, using it for more than just movie playing - see below.

But, let's do a quick inventory of features:

= It's blue-tooth enabled and, therefore, it's not taking any ports on your PS3. This is probably important for anyone who has a "2-USB ports console".
= It's wand-shaped, allowing the non-gamers to control their movie-watching activities while holding a familiar-shaped device in their hand.
= It maps ALL the six-axis buttons and performs everything a six-axis would do, except for the joystick features of R3 and L3 (but you do have the push-down or 'click' abilities for them).
= 2 AA battery powered (still with the original Sony batteries after 4 months of use)
= Includes additional buttons that the movie-only users would expect on a remote such as:
+ a number pad
+ eject
+ red, green, blue, yellow buttons
+ play, stop, pause
+ slow(step), scan(left/right), prev/next
+ display, top menu, pop up menu, return
+ subtitles, angle, audioWhat is interesting about this remote is that you can use it for much more than movie-playing. Given that it has all the six-axis buttons, guess what? You can use it, and I do use it to:

- surf the web
- play music
- shop at the PSN store
- play certain games such as Sudoku
- turn the PS3 on/off when your six-axis controllers are in the charger and I am playing GT5 that is using a racing wheel

And, yes, you CAN turn the PS3 on and off with this remote. Turning it on is easy - you simply press the PlayStation button and the PS3 turns itself on. To turn it off, you either go as far to the left on the X-bar and all the way up and press Enter (the turn-off PlayStation icon will be highlighted) or you simply hold the PlayStation button pressed for a few seconds and then select 'yes' and press the X button a couple of times.

Overall: I am happy with this peripheral. Yes, it's one more remote control but it's a pretty good one, for the reasons I stated above.

_______________________________

Notes - Aug 29, 2009, after 16 months of use

I find that I'm using the remote more and more, not only for playing movies but for navigating the XMB and at the PSN Store, also when playing music or slideshows. Due to its very convenient arrows wheel with an 'enter' button in the middle, navigating the PS3 and doing just about anything other than playing games is a lot easier than using the PS3 game controller. Unlike the controller which normally requires two hands to hold, this is basically a one-hand operation where you hold the remote in one hand and operate the wheel with your thumb. And because it's Bluetooth, not IR (Infrared), you don't even need to point it at the PS3.

And, one word on battery life. After about 15-16 months of operation, this is probably the third set of batteries so I'd estimate battery life to be about 4-6 months. Not too bad.

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection Review

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Disclosure - I am such a video pinball addict that I own Zen Pinball from the PSN as well as two other versions of this game, on PS2 and PSP. There is just something about pinball that feeds the hardcore "skill" gamer in me. It's punishing at times, loaded with lights and sounds, numerous biofeedback rushes of adrenaline from making shots and beating high scores - it's an "old school gamer's" delight.

So perhaps I was predisposed to liking this game. Still, I tried to evaluate it honestly and rigorously.

***************

Graphics: WOW. WOW!!!! I own this game on PS2 and PSP, and the PS3 visuals blow those games away handily. Running in 1080p at a silky smooth 60fps, The visuals are just spectacular. Jaggies are almost completely non-existent. No longer do we have to suffer through subpar textures - the playing fields are just exquisite, all text is clear and readable, reflections and lighting are realistic - it's just stunningly beautiful.

***************

Control: I have noticed absolutely no lag with my setup. The wireless controllers work fine with this game. L1 and R1 control the flippers, while the left and right stick control the plungers and tilt functions. The fact that there is no sixaxis tilt is odd, but I'd rather use the more accurate stick, anyway.

The camera controls offer a lot of choices - five views each for "smart cam" and "full view" which are dynamic and fixed views, respectively.

***************

Gameplay: If you've played another version of Williams Pinball HOF, you'll have a good idea of what to expect. Some tables are unlocked for free play, others require credits. Achieving table goals earns credits to unlock the pay tables. Tutorial videos outline the ways to achieve table goals.

The only wrinkle here is the Williams Challenge. In this mode, you are tasked with playing each table consecutively, beating a target score on each table, in three tries. The only way to unlock the Jive Time table is to beat the challenge - which is rather hard for even an expert, given the random chance involved in Pinball. Some tables are easy to meet the score goal on, but some tables, especially the older ones, drain much more easily and have fewer score multipliers, making them quite hard. Luckily, Jive Time is by far the least interesting table in the game - so if the Williams Challenge is giving you fits, don't sweat it too much. (NOTE! When you complete the table goals for a particular table, you will be presented with the option to instantly unlock a table for free play. Jive Time will be on the list - don't pick it! This seems to be a mistake by the programmers. It can only be unlocked through the Williams Challenge mode, but the game will still seem to "waste" an unsuccessful unlock on Jive Time. At a minimum, it will delay the unlock until you actually complete Williams Challenge. So it will probably be better spent on making a different table free to play.)

As far as bugs go, they seem to be further and fewer between than the PS2 and PSP versions of the game. Multi-ball play is much more stable than the previous versions of the game - there are no frame rate hitches and gameplay hiccups as in the other versions. In about 10 hours of playtime, I have had a ball pass through a bumper once, and balls "leave the table" twice. Every once in a while, a flipper will "wiggle" on its own without input from the player. So three or fours bugs in that time frame is not so bad, and is probably on par with how many real-life bugs you'd encounter on a physical table with all of its mechanical parts and potential for malfunctions. Should it be perfect? Probably. Is it game breaking? Not at all.

New to the game are online leaderboards and PS3 trophies. Leaderboards finally replicate the real thrill of pinball - trying to top some other real person'sscore. I will say, the high score implementation is still not perfect - the lists are quite sluggish to scroll through and sorting options are non-existent in the leader boards (e.g. by friends, top scores, etc.), and no higher-level data is available as in Zen Pinball (e.g. best score minute, best this week, best single ball, etc.) The trophies, sadly, are rather lame - there are only 15, nearly all of which are tied to high scores, with only one gold and one silver, no platinum - which leads me to believe this title was intended for download on PSN but somehow it was decided it would earn more money as a disc game. Why the trophies are not tied to the in-game table goals (as they are in the 360 version) is truly beyond my understanding.

***************

Tables: The following are the 13 included tables, in chronological order:

Jive Time (1970) - A very simple table with few extraneous features. Probably the most "old-timey" of the group. This table is a serious "drain monster" though, with huge center and outlanes and tiny bumpers, and it has been set to 5-ball mode by default to compensate. Pretty frustrating, but good for a nostalgia trip.

Gorgar (1979) - A relatively simple table with a few extras, such as a magnetic "snake pit." Well balanced and fun, but not overly complex. This table can seem crushingly hard to a beginner, but once you master some judicious table bumping, it can become a joy to play. You'll really build your skills on this one, it's hard-core.

Firepower (1980) - a simple but compelling table with two ball locks, some pop bumpers, targets to light them, and an orbit lane to get back up top. Apparently, this was the first table to include "lane change," and boy is it a nice step up from Gorgar to have it. Well balanced, cool sound effects, nice art.

Black Knight (1980) - A fun, 4-flipper multilevel playfield with several ramps and two ball locks for multi-ball. This game is very multi-ball heavy and is thus lots of fun. The flow on this table is amazing - a good hard toss with the flipper can send the ball through both levels and back again in one smooth flight through the ramps.

Space Shuttle (1984)- A fun table with a lane changing word array, two ball catches, two ramps, a space shuttle model, and a bonus readout on the table. Midway between the very complex tables and the more simple ones. This one is pretty easy to earn the extra ball on, so you could be looking at a marathon session. I will say it can get a tad repetitive at higher levels of play.

Sorcerer (1985) - some cool ramps and an fun adjustable word-slot target make this a pretty fun table. The arrangement of targets is quite a bit of fun to hit. Multiball is not too difficult to engage, but is not as easy as Black Knight. The art on this one is quite fetching - the reds, blacks, oranges and purples really pop on a nice HDTV screen.

Pin*Bot (1987) - This table is a lot of fun. A robotic "visor" lifts up during the game, allowing you to lock balls into the eye sockets for later multiball use. Several ramps and a skillshot mechanic off the plunger make this one a keeper. It can be a bit of a "drain monster," though, as the left outlane is shaped in such a way that it frequently diverts the ball in that direction.

Taxi (1988)- This talking table strikes a nice balance between simplicity and gimmicks. While there is no multilevel flipper, a skillshot spiral is off the plunger, a two-way ramp goes around the top, and a ball lock for multiball play on the right side. Adding somewhat to the complexity are five "passengers" you have to pick up and take to their destination (for a big bonus). The passengers include Gorbachev, Pin*Bot, Dracula, Santa Claus, and a Marilyn Monroe lookalike. This one is very balanced fun for both beginners and veterans.

Funhouse (1990)- a VERY fun table with loads of features. You work to advance a clock on the game field by hitting bumpers. A talking ventriloquist dummy gets whacked by the pinball and complains - if you advance the clock far enough, you can put him to sleep and launch the ball into his snoring mouth. Lots of ramps and special features, and a third flipper for multi-level play. Probably the best table in the game.

Whirlwind (1990) - Incredibly fun, up there with Funhouse. This talking table gives you warnings of hurricanes/tornadoes. A third flipper makes this a multi-level game. A lot of cool ramps litter this one, and the middle of the playfield features "storm" pinwheels that alter the path of the ball. The special shots on this table are a lot of fun. The extra ball is devilishly placed, and the million plus is right there for the taking if you light it. The graphical quality helps make the objectives clear on the table even without deep study - just like seeing a target light on a real table!

Tales of the Arabian Nights (1996) - Probably the most "beautiful" table in terms of artwork, but the art is so busy that you may get lost in it, especially at certain camera angles. This one is more of a skill table, with more difficult shots to make. The transparent ramps are very cool and create a "magical" effect on the ball returns. A long set of "missions" make this a good table for a long game session.

Medieval Madness (1997) - a good beginner table. Easy to score in the tens of millions, with several easy targets and very difficult drains to fall into. Also a good table to master - it's deceptively simple. When you figure out the rule set, you'll learn that you can destroy the castle seven times for ever-increasing millions. This seems to be the most popular table online, the leaderboard keep getting longer and longer! I will say, this table is more of a "marathon" than a "skills" table. To break 100 million, it involves a LOT of repeating shots over and over, lather, rinse, repeat.

No Good Gofers (1997) - a...Read more›

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Review

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sonice & Sega All-Stars racing takes the popular genre of the racing genre and adds in our favorite SEGA characters. One of the leading features of the game is the wide amount of fan service given to the characters. Sonic fans will love to see their Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Eggman as racers; they will see tracks themed with Sonic (and even sound effects like the bumper from the casinos of the Sonic the Hedgehog series), and they will even be able to hear and unlock numerous songs from throughout the Sonic universe, such as "Super Sonic Racing" from Sonic R, or even "What U Need" from Sonic Rush. Not only is this true for the Sonic series but is true for the other series represented (Sambe De Amigo, Super Monkey Ball, etc).

This game brings SEGA characters and unites them in this genre, which is perhaps quite fun.For the PS3, PSN support lets players race with up to 4 players split screen (locally), or with 2 to 8 players via the online mode.

The mechanics to racing are quite simple with really easy to grasp controls.Use a trigger button to gas, one to break, and then the x-button to launch a weapon. Its pretty fast and hectic which makes every racing experience unique.

There is just one fault and that is probably some of the levels are quite short, however its only about four of them among the twenty-four tracks. The voice acting of the characters is true to how they have always sounded, and the narrator is quite funny.

Definitely check the game out and enjoy it.

Product Description:
In a frantic battle to the checkered flag, Sonic and friends speed around tracks set in medieval castle ramparts, lush rainforests and bustling cities, all taken from the visually rich and varied universes of Sonic and SEGA. Fan favorites such as Dr. Eggman, Tails, AiAi, Amigo and many more will join Sonic in their custom built vehicles, revving their engines and jostling to stay ahead of the pack. Each character will speed around the track in cars, planes, motorbikes, and in Aiai's case - a banana mobile! Secret short cuts, swift handling and avoiding strategically placed obstacles are certainly the best way to get to the top of the podium.

Project Gotham Racing 4 Review

Project Gotham Racing 4
Average Reviews:

Some racing games are a little too sim for me, like Gran Turismo and Forza. I don't care about adjusting gear ratios.

Some racing games are a little too arcade for me, like Burnout.

Some racing games just aren't my style, like the NFS street racing games of the last few years. I don't want to lower my car and get a huge wing on my Eclipse.

I still enjoy those racing games, but for me, PGR 4 (and PGR 3) is a perfect combination of simulation and arcade racing. The feel is "sim" enough to require a lot of practice to get really good, but forgiving enough to be fun from the start. The graphics are fantastic, the online play is great, and even the music is diverse and entertaining.

Also, You can drive amazing cars from the beginning, unlike GT, Forza, and NFS. I don't like being stuck with a Mazda Miata for the first few days. I see a lot of Miata's in real life. This is a videogame. I want to drive a Ferrari.

Get this game if you're looking for a great all-around racing game.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Review

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Oblivion is EXACTLY how I imagined an RPG should be like back in the 80's, while playing Ultimas on Commodore 64s and Atari STs.

Oblivion has weather. While there is no wind other than a constant, gentle breeze, you do get rain/thunderstorms, fog, snow (no blizzards though, because there's not much wind). You don't slip and fall on ice but the sound of your steps is different whether you walk on the road, on grass, on snow or on ice.

The world of Cyrodill is not exactly continent-size, maybe some 20-30 miles in any direction from downtown Imperial City but... what a world this is. Cities, settlements, camps, estates, roadside inns, ruins, caves, dungeons, mines, shrines. The landscape is made up of plains, hard-to-climb mountains, rivers, swamps, waterfalls, seas. You can travel on foot or you can ride a horse. You can fight your way into fame and fortune while doing good or you can sneak into other people's houses or pickpocket the unsuspecting. The guards will chase you and throw you in jail if you do illegal things but, if they like you enough, maybe they will look the other way sometimes. Powerful gods or humble people will ask you do 'little things' for them and, if you can make them happy, they will reward you according to their abilities. You can raise to the top of your profession, as a fighter, as a mage, as a thief or as an assassin or you can assemble your own little gang of dreamy crusaders so that you can fight evil and recover the relics of a legendary knight. Or you can do them all and become all, in sequence or make progress in all paths more or less simultaneously while moonlighting as a gladiator as well and, if still bored, how about helping a lady take care of the rats in her basement (that's NOT what you think) or some drunk guy at the inn get rid of the Trolls that took over his daddy's country estate? Oh and, I forgot, there's a world to save or... wait... there's TWO worlds, thanks to the Shivering Isles extension.

This game is so huge, I can't see how you could really 'finish' it. After more than 2 months of almost daily playing, I am maybe 75-80% into the main quest, half a way through the Knights of the Nine, only started the Shivering Isles adventures. I did become the realm's Chief Mage (and the titles earns me no respect from the scholar mages) and the grand master at the Fighters league, got myself 350,000 gold coins in my pocket, 2 comfortable houses and 2 nice offices, completed close to 100 quests, slaughtered 2000 creatures and hundreds of humans, murdered 4 or 5 and all but one by mistake (friendly fire), didn't even come close to the Thieves guild and, foolishly, made it impossible for me to ever join the Dark Brotherhood (these are the assassins). Also, I've never been a vampire and didn't yet start my career as a professional gladiator. I did massacre the peaceful dwellers of a small village but I did that under the influence of some drugs that made them look to me like bloody Orcs - that was the price to pay for infiltrating and destroying the source of that scourge. Oh, and while briefly in the land of Dementia - or was it Mania? - I did, willingly, push buttons that caused a few careless adventurers to go insane and I watched as they were becoming so. I humiliated a lovely princess - or was it a duchess? - and I killed so many fearsome monsters, I lost count myself but the game does keep a count so it's easy to know. In fact, the game keeps track of so many things... I could easily find out how many jokes I told, how many potions I made, how many horses I've stolen (one), how many hours I slept or how many books I read.

Well...? What do you think?

On the 'not so good' side, the game does slow down when you are fighting 4-5 monsters at the same time or when there are other things that keep the PS3 busy while you are fighting the baddies - like a fire burning. Loading/saving times are a bit too long but, while this is happening, you do get to read some randomly selected good advice on the screen.

The other thing that saddens me is that I don't believe the good people at Bethesda are working on the next chapter yet. I do hope that, as soon as they are done with Fallout-3, they are going to get busy with another adventure in Cyrodill or thereabouts.

My other problem is that I am now fighting with my kids over time on the PS3. We have a bunch of other games but, since Oblivion came into our house, I would say that 95%+ of our PS3 time was on Oblivion.

12/19/10 NOTE:

I am so glad to be proven wrong. 11/11/11 is the announced date for the "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim". All I know so far is that it will use a new and much improved game engine - about time - and that it appears to at least reference Oblivion. Hopefully "Two Worlds 2", expected to be released on Jan. 25 and enjoying great reviews in Europe were it already sold one million copies, will be a large and compelling enough RPG to keep me/us occupied for the next 10-11 months.
