(More customer reviews)"EA GAMES!"...that was the first thing that came out of my mouth when I saw the cover art for TimeSplitters Future Perfect a while back. Now, as much as I love EA GAMES, I have to admit I was worried about the TimeSplitters series when I saw it changing publisher. Now all I can say is, "Congratulations Free Radical on another spectacular game!" Eidos, EA, it makes no difference. The boys at Free Rad have done it again. Its been a considerable time since the last installment in the series but the other day I found myself picking up right where I left off in TimeSplitters 2. This made me very happy, to say the least. Some minor and major changes have been made to the series and believe me that their all for the best. The graphics still have some what of a cartoony look to them but have been made to look more realistic. The controls are tighter, as if to say the previous game's weren't, sheesh. Things just don't stop getting better do they? Technically, Future Perfect is the most impressive game I have ever seen. It's framerate is blistering, it sounds fantastic, the animations and effects are wonderful, and best of all the characters actually seem alive. Sure the A.I. in the last game was good, but this time, it is SO much better. The characters take cover, talk to you constantly, never to the point of being annoying, and the look absolutley great. The game's story is also very interesting and captivating, making for a more memorable experience. Where as TimeSplitters 2 dropped you into random time periods to abliterate everything in your way, Future Perfect drops you into random time periods to abliterate everything in your way, for a purpose. I won't give away the story but I assure you it is very awesome. Whether your infiltrating a train yard with 60's super spy, Harry Tipper, or blasting apart zombies in a haunted house, Future Perfect is sure to keep you entertained for hours on end. One of the biggest changes I should point out are that TimeSpitters now has blood...tons and tons of blood. It is gory, gratuious and I love it. This truely adds to the hightened realism the series is seeming to strive for. However, never fear fellow TimeSplitters fans, the classic humor from the previous titles is still intact and funnier than ever. Future Perfect is...well, a perfect mix of both seriousness and humor. Just when you begin to get frustrated, an in-game voice well ease your tension. For example, when I was being timed to hack a computer and becoming just a little frustrated, another Cortez yelled "Hey I know it sucks, I've have to do it twice already!" and the two more chime in, "Me too!" Thats right people, I said another Cortez. Future Perfect allows you to meet yourself through time paradoxes, either a future you or a past you. In either case you'll be helping youself out, and will eventually play out the situation through both perspectives. Not only will you meet up with yourself but many memorable characters return to the series, including Captain Ash, Jungle Queen, Kitten Celeist, Khallos, Jo Beth, monkey, and the previously metioned, Harry Tipper. And thats just in the single player game. Dinosaur, Handy Man, Duckman Drake, and many others return to the insane multiplayer portion of Future Perfect that will have you battling it out in various modes across some of the best multiplayer maps ever.Siberia focuses on wide open combat, allowing players to get into vehicles while most of the other maps allow for more classic FPS action. The multiplayer maps are very diverse, from Vietnam to a swinging 60's club, the mayhem will never end. As in TimeSplitters 2, two players can play the whole single player mode cooperativley and all levels can be challenged on different difficulties. Some classic weapons return to the series with a couple modifications such as the minigun, shotgun, and SBP 90. The new weapons are just plain awesome, double MP5k's, a baseball bat, harpoon gun, and trip mines, to name only a few. You can now throw grenades and use a device on your arm to lift object to hurdle at people. This seems very much like a Jedi using the force and is quite useful for reaching things at high locations. The arcade modes and challenges are up to the previous game's standards and are sure to not not dissapoint...I mean come on, who doesn't want to race a wheeled cat around a race track. As in the last game, Future Perfect manages to pay homage to GoldenEye with a similar train mission. Also, Chinese, Mexican Mission, and Training Ground from TimeSplitters 2 have been revamped, unfortunatly, they just dont feel the same. But thats why new maps have been made. TimeSplitter Future Perfect is a game I would honestly and gladly pay much more than 50 dollars for and is truly one of the best games I have ever played. Time to Split!

No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In H.A.R.M.'s Way Review

(More customer reviews)The world of first person shooters is getting a bit played out. There's pretty much two kinds of them: the realistic military type (Counterstrike, Ghost Recon, Operation Flashpoint) and the sci-fi type (Unreal, Alien vs. Predator, System Shock). In all this, there's not much room for improvement and things are getting a bit repetitive- all you do is go in and kill everything that moves, and solve (or cheat) your way past the occasional puzzle that primarily exists to justify putting a longer gameplay figure on the box. Looking at most new titles, the only really interesting thing is even more detailed graphics and effects, which- by the way- mean you need a new PC.
Enter No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in HARM's Way. This excellent shooter and sequel to an excellent shooter is the type that will save the genre. Here's why:
System requirements: You don't need a new PC to run this game, but this doesn't mean it looks like the original Doom. More on that later.
Gameplay: There are some puzzles, but they aren't annoying or counterintuitive. It is possible to get past some levels without killing anyone. Curiosity and inventiveness pay off here, but if you can't do that, you can usually just go in with guns blazing.
Something new: The game has some nice additions from the original NOLF. Most significant of these are skills. Completing primary and secondary objectives and finding intelligence items gives you points, which you can invest in 8 different skills that all have a significant impact on gameplay. Additionally, there are new and cool gadgets to play with. Many of them auto-activate when necessary, which disposes of the annoyance of having to switch over to use them. HARM also has some new hires and allies, including French mimes (no, I didn't make that up). Do you need any other reason to play?
Story: This is what really makes the game fun. The voice acting and cutscenes (all done with the game engine) are superb, and really draw you into the plot. As you might guess from the title, the usual suspects are up to no good once again. It's a tossup as to whether this is more of a James Bond or Austin Powers kind of script, but whatever it is, it's a good one.
AI: The NOLF AI is smart- as good as any other game I've seen. They take cover behind objects, go prone, roll out of the way of grenades, and seek you out if you make noise. The AI characters also act like real people. If you pick one of them off with a silenced weapon, they'll be confused for a second and then load their guns and start looking around. If you can see them, they can see you, and given enough time they definitely will.
Replayability: Due to the detail of the levels, it's unlikely you'll find everything there is to find on one pass. Also, the AI behaves in a random enough fashion that every time you play an area the outcome could be very different (if you don't believe me, just try reloading a save). Also, you don't have enough skill points to advance to the max in every area. Playing again with a different set of skills is quite fun. For example, try going all-out stealth and health instead of firepower and attempt to sneak your way through places you blasted by earlier. It's arguably more exciting trying this!
Graphics and sound: This is the first game I've seen that models expressions believably. The Jupiter engine has the look and feel of something that would require a cutting-edge machine to run, but goes smoothly on an average computer. It is, quite simply, astonishing. There's a huge amount of interaction with the environment, and things have an almost movie-like appearance. The characters are especially a pleasure to see, due to the attention to detail. Ms. Archer in particular has had a gorgeous makeover- she is arguably the hottest woman in any game to date, even including live motion actresses. Oh, and by the way, the soundtrack is killer.
Multiplayer: The version of the game that shipped did not have significant multiplay support. This has been remedied. Updating to the latest version gives you deathmatch, team deathmatch, cooperative, and assault game modes. Additionally, there are plenty of maps out now. The only thing missing here is bots, which is a bit of a pity considering how good the AI is. I'm sure someone will think to add those later.
If this isn't enough to convince you, the setting is just plain cool. This is the 60's, folks, complete with President Johnson, neon colored clothing, retro-tech spygear, and even a bellicose American general. The characters that populate this world have true depth and, more often than not, are good for some great laughs. Lastly, this game is probably the best deal you'll ever see at such a low price. Don't miss out- grab NOLF 2 while you can.

Conker: Live & Reloaded Review

When Conker's Bad Fur Day came out on the N64 back in 01, it had the unfortunate luck to come out toward the end of game development.Nintendo had started promoting their next console, the Gamecube and this fact, coupled with the fact that Conker was retailing for an ungodly $70+ made many people miss this game.What a treasure it was to be missed.

It is the first game that meshed the genre of platforming with third person shooting.It also introduced context sensitive situations where, at the push of a button, different things would happen.Both of these have become old hat now, especially the mixing of genres.You can look at Jak and Daxter for the PS2 to find that.On top of revolutions of gameplay, this was the funniest game I have ever played.

And so it's out again on the Xbox, bearing beautiful graphics, re-recorded dialogue and some shifting of difficulties.The graphics in this game are probably some of the best, if not the best, seen in an Xbox game to date.This doesn't surprise me, though, given that Rare creates beautiful games.What did surprise me was how they toned the game down as far as difficulty goes.The original game was hard, downright frustrating in some parts.Now, Rare either tamed down the difficulty (as in the Saving Private Ryan level) or completely cut out a section (as in a sequence involving underwater travel and an electric eel used to power different generators).Both sections were insanely difficult and not forgiving in the least.

Part of the problem of the first game was the pacing at the beginning.Some reviewers here are misinformed when they say the game is not a "shooter" that it is a "platformer."The beginning levels are very platform heavy, true, but give it some time.It isn't until later stages where you are facing zombies and tediz that the gameplay focus switches to a shooter type from platforming.I enjoy both parts but it would have been nice to have a better mixing of the two genres.However, since this is basically a port of that game I'm glad they didn't change it.

Along with awesome graphics, the audio portion of the game has been completely redone.The dialogue has been re-recorded (using the same people), and the music has been redone to perfection.All of this in Dolby Digital surround.

Basically, my biggest recommendation for the single player comes in the form of what is in this game.Where else, for instance, can you fight the operatic Great Mighty Poo, hit a boiler plant in his brass balls, ride a raptor, bite a caveman in the ass with said raptor, lava surf, be a bat, ride in a tank, have bullet time, hit on a cavewoman, jump on a female flower's "petals," shoot zombies, meet Death, get drunk, urinate on Fire Imps and partake in many movie parodies?Honestly, the list can go on and on.

Then, on top of this wonderful single player game, a game I have played over and over on the N64 and will probably play over and over on the Xbox, is the Live portion.

I haven't played the Live portion too much but I think people will be divided on it.Especially the console gamers used to games like Halo 2.There are six classes that range from the bazooka carrying demolitionists to the airplane flying sky jockeys.Each character has their own weapon set complete with upgrades and special abilities.All of this in an arena that is objective based instead of simply death match based.This involves large arenas to play CTF and other games similar to this.But there's strategy involved not only in how to get the flag from point A to point B but also in the classes which opens up a variety of ways to accomplish your tasks.

For instance, do you have your sky jockey transport troops into the thick of things and provide cover fire?Do you have your Sneeker troops sneak in with their up close and personal melee weapons?Or do you rain devastation with your bazookas?There's so many choices for tactical strategy.Conversely, there's a lot of room for things to go sour.I think the quality of the people playing, not only in how they play but also in personality, will determine whether this Live experience will be a fun one or a horrible one.

The Live portion seems to be more in line with PC online games, like Counter Strike, where there's a little more strategy involved.Don't get me wrong, Halo 2 has strategy but if you play Counter Strike the way most Live people play Halo 2, you wouldn't last very long.And I think that same type of strategy will carry over into Conker's Live portion.I could be wrong.I hope it's very successful because Rare put a lot of time and effort into fine tuning it.We'll see.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing you online and I hope you pick up this game because the quality inside it shines.Look to Rare to lead the way into Xbox 360.Not only with Conker but in the games they have ready for X360 Launch.Thanks, Rare, for bringing Conker to a new generation of players who probably missed out of the game the first go around.

Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice Review

I also don't recall if the first game had wireless support -- this one does.

I can't comment on the multi-player modes of this game, but I can say that I am enjoying the heck out of the single-player story game.

Pursuit Force is remembered best for the sequences where you jump from one moving vehicle to another, guns blazing, slow-motion if you have earned "full justice" by your righteous actions.

These sequences are back, but what I'm digging this time around is what seems like a greater variety of missions and activities to occupy me as well.Here one mission will involve a variety of activities, from chase and destroy to gunning from a chopper to engaging in combat on foot.

It's all well done, and the graphics are smoother this time around.Excellent orchestral music and sound effects and fine control to boot.

There are also some new bonus modes to extend the title's play value further, which I haven't tried; I've been having way too much fun with the story mode!I also like the purchasable upgrades; I don't remember these from the first game...

Really, for $30, I have to consider this title a must-purchase for PSP action game fans.This is the most fun I've had with the PSP since LocoRoco...

Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Review

(More customer reviews)This game is absolutely awful, I would actually rather study than play it.It's one of the worst pieces of trash I've played in a long time & I'm an AVID Tony Hawk supporter (until now that is).

First of all, 2/3 of the skaters that have been with the game from the beginning are gone, only the most mainstream skaters made the cut.OG skaters like Rowley, Reynolds, and JT have been replaced by the likes of Steve-O, Jesse James, & even Bigfoot.

Second, the storyline has essentially turned the game into an episode of "Viva La Bam".Half of the goals don't involve skating of any type and simply play on the "skateboarding-is-punk-so-we-destroy-things-'cuz-that's-the-cool-skater-thing-to-do" mantra that seems to be pervading the youth skate culture.If you've skated for any length of time this comes off as a desperate & pathetic attempt to make some money off a crappy game that caters to all the 13 year olds who think Bam Margera is the greatest.

Lastly, as if the pop culture influence that permeates the gameplay isn't insulting enough, there is A video at the end.No, not 1 video per pro, A video featuring all of them.They each throw 3 moves & it's over.

When the Tony Hawk series began the games actually influenced pop culture; now they're doing just the opposite & letting what's trendy dictate the direction of the games.I used to buy all the sequels without question, but after seeing the previews for this game I decided to rent it first (thank goodness I did).You could do a lot better with $50 than buy this game; like buy some real skateboard gear.

Apart from the many bug fixes there is nothing extra to justify the price. Contrary to popular belief, there are no new weapons and the WormPot mode is very similar to the cheat options from Worms Armageddon. The new front-end graphics are tailored for a younger audience with the exact same layout as Worms Armageddon too. Worms World Party also lacks league play and a world ranking system that made Worms Armageddon so popular. There is no mission editor as of yet, Team17 have made this as an extra download as they did with The Fiddler for Worms Armageddon.
Worms World party is a good game if you do not have Worms 2 or Worms Armageddon only because of the fact that Worms is a fantastic game in it's own right. Give this game a miss if you expect new features from a sequel.

Worms Triple Pack Review

(More customer reviews)Worms....by itself is a tremendous game. Light-hearted and simple in design but addictive and challenging from a gameplay perspective. My first memory of playing worms was on LAN setup in college. The whole dorm floor would go head to head in Worms deathmatches. This would go on for hours as people would be yelling at there teammates throughout the floor.
Worms is a startegy game that pits "teams" of worms against each other on a 2D game board. Quirky level design and bright colors make this a nice visual package. Basically the worms move in a turn based fashion as you move your team around the gameboard attacking, hiding or defending against the other sqaud by using items such as girders, drills, uzi's flamethrowers, grenades to wacky weapons like sheep bombs, Holy Hand Grenades, to Super Banana Bomb (and I can't forget the "Carpet" bomb, my favorite). This game is a must buy, getting all three of the last incarnations for such a low price is amazing. I have gotten more gaming for my buck playing all three of these games (when they were all originally released, at full price) then any other game out there. So this triple pack is well worth it.
If you want an insane, goofy team-based or single player strategy game with a twist, scope this one out now. Don't let the cartoonish graphics fool you, this game pack is filled with tons of enjoyment for all ages(as long as the blood option is tunred off in WWParty).

Ratchet Deadlocked Review

(More customer reviews)We really love the Ratchet and Clank series of games, with the gameplay, humor and general mayhem. Deadlocked is NOT an adventure game like the others - it's a gladiator combat game. You don't even have Clank with you for most of the game.

It's not that this game is "bad" - but it's different. I really did like the whole exploring-worlds theme of the previous games. The gladiator matches in those were interesting diversions but I was always happy when they were over. In this game, that's all that you get. You go from arena to arena, mindlessly bashing away at enemies and trying to stay alive.

There are all sorts of mini-games that you unlock along the way - hoverbike races involving traditional follow-the-circles, shooting games, flying games, and much more. The humor is still quite fun, although it's now a very odd mix of very adult humor and very kiddy humor. The game is rated Teen so the adult humor is reasonably OK I suppose, depending on how protective you are of younger teens.

The weapons upgrades are as usual amazingly fun - and you get to have "mods" to your weapons like acid and napalm to customise them to your liking. You can do all sorts of mixes and matches to get just the feel that you want.

The graphics are of good quality - I've always enjoyed the graphic style of the Ratchet and Clank games so this provides more of the same. The sound is reasonably good, although we do find some really repetitive, annoying tracks in there. We also had the game completely freeze up on us a few times. Maybe it needed just a little more QA before it was released.

The multiplayer modes are a really nice extension of the game. I really enjoy playing a game with a friend, so anything with co-op in it is great.

I suppose on the up side that if this had not come out, we would have just been sitting here twiddling our thumbs until the next "real" release of Ratchet and Clank came out. So in that sense, I'm really happy to have this out as filler, to keep us busy until then. We definitely ran out to grab this as soon as it was released, even though it wasn't (as far as we were concerned) a fully fledged Ratchet and Clank game to plow through.

You can buy updated versions of the games that play on Windows XP from Jellyvision's YouDontKnowJack website (they created the game). Hours of entertainment. If you have an older computer and want to play the best trivia game ever made - buy this game! I believe they have made over 5 different versions over the years, even specific games all about movies, all about sports and all about TV. If you don't remember these games, you can play new, daily YDKJ on the YDKJ website and see how much you love them before you buy the older (and much longer and more fun) games.

(More customer reviews)It is definately not the lack of good previous Simpsons games that make Hit and Run so excellent.This game more than makes up for it's predecessors.It is one of the most enthralling adventure games I've ever played.Whether you are an occasional watcher of the show, a never seen it before viewer, or one of "those" who own every guidebook, DVD, the piano songbook, and the life-size homer cut out I saw at the mall today, you will love this game.It has racing, problem solving, obstacle courses, and mass destruction on its list of tasks, and I haven't even seen it past the first level yet!Avid fans will enjoy Hit and Run the most because of the many refernces to the show.You get to see the world's largest toilet, race through the nuclear power plant, collect tomacco plants, and (best of all) you get to kick Ned Flanders and other annoying characters many times.The main missions are easy enough to get through, but the side missions, extra races, gag tasks, and shear expanse of the Simpsons world will keep you occupied for many a sleepless night.The only downside so far with this game comes when you want to complete every single task per level.Then you find yourself in a quite frustrating search that takes you EVERYWHERE in Springfield that could make your temper throw the controller across the room.Be patient and enjoy the environment!Buy this game!Who could really resist seeing Homer run around town in his underwear?!And remember...No jumping in the Springfield Tire Fire!

Space Quest Collection Review

(More customer reviews)I bought a couple of these re-release sets over the years trying to make them work on newer computers. Vivendi finally took some time here to polish up these games and get them working on modern hardware. I have tested and played through the intro to each of these games and did some basic gameplay.

Vivendi has licensed a program called DosBox to act as middleware between DOS emulation and Windows XP. This means the games finally run properly on new computers. The sound is properly redirected through sound cards under Windows. Even the beeps and bleeps of the PC speaker sound from Space Quest II come through on my Sound Blaster Audigy 2. I had not been able to play the sound for Space Quest III since I sold my old 486 about 8 years ago.

The games also play at the proper speed. No longer does the character move at light-speed regardless of the setting you make in the game. The games all seem to be playable and enjoyable. Included in the set is the VGA remake of Space Quest I, the talking CD-ROM version of Space Quest IV, and the CD-ROM version of Space Quest VI. It might have been nice to see the other versions of those games included, but the quality of what has been included here is first rate. There is also a manual included in PDF format from one of the earlier releases of the anthology.

Thank you Vivendi for resurrecting some of my favorite adventure games from my childhood and for taking the time to make a polished interface to make them work properly!! I hope the rest of the Sierra games will be released soon. You certainly can't beat the price for these at all!

I also bought the King's Quest Compilation and I expect it to be just as great based on my impressions of the Space Quest Compilation.

Evil Genius Review

(More customer reviews)Evil Genius is an amazingly addictive strategy game (sort of a Sims game). It has great humor, great graphics, great sound, and lots of great gameplay. Unfortunately it has some moments of really boring gameplay as well as some downright frustration.

In the game you build an evil lair and send your minions around the world doing evil deeds. Meanwhile you raise cash, more minions, build a bigger base, buid traps, and defend your base against the nasty do-gooder agents (ala James Bond) trying to take you down.

Doing all of these things is great fun. Just deciding on your base design is fun and the graphic animations are terrifc so just watching things happen is entertaining. Unfortunately you really need to read between the lines of the goals as well as read the manual a few times (and the online help) to figure out exactly how things work. It is very easy to get stuck in moments where not much is really going on and you can't figure out what you are supposed to do next. It is very easy for the boring moments to go on for hours.

Fortunately the game will easily take you 40 hours or more to complete and you will certainly want to play it at least one more time to incorporate all you learned on your first play.

Overall, Evil Genius is a great mix of strategy and campy humor that will probably keep you playing long into the night. Just don't be surprised if some of those hours are frustrating.

Cake Mania 2 Review

(More customer reviews)After mastering Cake Mania, I of course bought No. 2. There are lots of new characters, graphics, etc. but the strategy remains the same. This game differs from the first in that the location of the ovens, topping machines, and icing machines switch locations at every level. Also, the types of cakes baked are not the same on all 3 machines whichmakes the baking process a bit more difficult. The first few levels (or "worlds" - you'll see when you play the game) are relatively easy. However, my experience is that the levels go from this level to straight-up impossible (or very difficult). I guess this is a good thing for Cake Mania addicts as this challenge keeps the game fresh. I tried to find No. 2 for DS and apparently, as of right now (2008), Cake Mania will not be coming to DS (at least not this year). :(

Disney's Emperor's New Groove Action Game Review

(More customer reviews)First, let me say that my sound, and everything else, worked fine, and I even installed this game on an older PC running Windows 2000 Advanced Server, even though it doesn't meet the requirements for it.I've also installed it without a problem on a system that was pretty hip a couple years ago, which means it's pretty dated now, running Windows 98 and with no new drivers.
I'm not a very experienced gamer. On the other hand, I'm in my 30's. I found The Emperor's New Groove challenging and fun. While from a strictly technical standpoint, I can see arguments that the graphics aren't perfect (as mentioned in reviews for versions of the game for other systems), the graphics were absorbing to me. I also loved the music and the funny, sarcastic attitude of the characters.
You control Kuzco, the Emperor, in his transformed, llama state. The game begins high up in the mountains, in Pacha's village, and your goal is to travel back to the royal palace to be transformed back into a human Emperor. The game is a series of levels that take you through the mountains, rivers, catacombs, etc. You have to collect coins and other items, solve puzzles, and make many challenging jumps--in many ways, The Emperor's New Groove can be considered a cross between an adventure/logic, an action and a platform game, just like most other Disney Action Games.
One of the things that makes the game challenging is that you only can take five hits before you lose a life. It is possible to collect extra lives, but it usually isn't easy to find the object you need to get them. Until you've mastered defeating enemies like the "evil" royal guards, you can take those five hits in a matter of seconds. Losing all your lives (I often only had one) means starting over from the beginning of a level. When you're in a level that takes 40 minutes to get through and you have to defeat the guard 20 minutes into it, that can be quite a challenge.
Of course, to experienced gamers, say someone who plays computer/video games an hour or two per day and has been doing so for 10 - 15 years or so, this might not be such a hard game. But as a Disney title, The Emperor's New Groove is directed at kids from 8 and up. For more inexperienced gamers of any age, it may be _too_ challenging. My wife, for instance, who hasn't tried playing computer games before this title (she liked the film so much that she wanted to try it) has given up for the time being, at least until she builds some experience on easier titles. I'm a bit more experienced, but there were levels here, such as the very long one full of huge Venus Flytraps, lava pits, bees, elaborate arrow booby traps, etc. that took me _at least_ 5 or 6 hours of gameplay to get through.
Elsewhere, I've read some complaints about the way the 3D camera automatically scrolls. I agree that when you're in a tight spot, the camera changes can make the game quite difficult. Also, you have to position the camera in order to make many of the jumps, and tight spots, as well as trying to maneuver so you won't miss the jump, can make positioning the camera correctly _extremely_ difficult. But that's part of the challenge, isn't it?
In my opinion, the most recent Disney Action Games I've played--which also includes The two newer Buzz Lightyear games, 102 Dalamatians: Puppies to the Rescue (this is the best one for the most inexperienced gamers, since it's much harder to die) and Donald Duck Goin' Quackers--are not only the best Disney games so far, but are the most fun games I've played yet. Of course it helps that I'm a huge Disney fan, but I enjoy the Disney games more than anything aimed at my demographic.
