Jump Ultimate Stars for Nintendo DS (Japanese Language Import) Review

Jump Ultimate Stars for Nintendo DS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not going to get in to the nitty gritty of how the game plays and such since it's essentially the same as the original.I do have a full review of the original game if you feel like learning the ins and outs of the game, I encourage you to read that review and others for a more in depth look at the game.

PROS:
+ There's more characters and series featured in this game.On the plus side there seems to be more of a diversification of usable characters. In the previous game it seemed as if there was more of a focus on the popular series (Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball...) featured in the game were as this one seems to have some more obscure things taking a front seat.

+ Koma Evolution vs. Koma Completion.I'm not going to lie, in the original game having to fill in the blanks was down right annoying without having a fluent understanding of Japanese.I have a decent grasp on Japanese and it still grated my nerves considerably. In this game you simply earn the one square koma via certain objectives and from there you can purchase the larger versions of the given koma by spending points which you earn from fighting. They also use this system to unlock new levels, new evolutions for other koma, questions for the quiz mode, info about various series, unlocking new worlds, and a couple of others I'm probably forgetting. This is probably the best addition in my opinion.

+ More intuitive menus. This is probably arguable, but I like the ways the menus are layed out and the way you can sort and access your deck building options much more in this one.The filters for deck building are better organized and use more English which makes for a much more pleasant deck building experience.

+ The comboing works out a lot better in this game in my opinion.Only certain characters were particularly good melee fighters in the original but here it seems that just about every character has at least one respectably useful combo now.

CONS:
- While some may like the decreased difficulty, and that really doesn't take away from the game, it does as a side effect make for a shorter game.Fully clearing the orignal was quite a task and in this itteration it's far more feasible.

- It seems to me, and I'm pretty sure on this but can't entirely prove it or back it up, but special moves in general have been nerfed.Just about anything can knock you out of a special move now which generally I wouldn't care about but the AI as always spams support characters which at the very least will require you to basically relearn or evaluate how and when to use specials.

- The levels are far more annoying in this game. This is probably my major gripe with this game. There's tons of new environmental hazards and a large number of the level layouts are just stupid and lack good brawling areas. In some instances the level is a greater opponent than the character you're actually fighting.

- The AI seems to either be incredibly intelligent or obtusely stupid.Characters seem to have a bad habit in this game of avoiding fighting you the player, but don't hesitate for a second to brawl amongst themselves. This is particularly annoying because the AI seems to "kill steal" you far more than was the case in the original. This could just be my perception of things due to the general down grading of special skills so maybe I'm just used to whomping the computer a bit harder.

GIVE OR TAKES:
+/- The way you travel around is now series to series in a planet to planet kind of way.Personally I don't like this method quite as much but I can't really call it a knock against the game since some people will probably really like this.I really like the way the map looked and everything in the original and having planets floating in space just seems kind of bland.

+/- Some of the general challenge of the game is gone. It's easier to unlock all of the pieces, and navigating the map is more simple.I'm not positive but I think some of the harder objectives have been removed and some of the original hard objectives are now considerably more easy, especially the avoid getting hit ones.

+/- Some characters have been sufficiently retooled to the point where characters you liked from the original are no longer going rub you the right way.Naruto stands out in my mind, the Rasengan isn't as quick as it used to be and doesn't launch nearly as much but then you have characters like Kenshin who now have some far more practical specials.

And there you have it, my quick thoughts on the original vs. the new version. It's a great game but I'm kind of torn between which game I like better.I highly recommend this game as long as you are willing to deal with the Japanese in any way you see fit.

Mega Man ZX: Advent Review

Mega Man ZX: Advent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This highly anticipated game will satisfy Mega Man enthusiasts, but may frustrate those who are new to the Mega Man Zero/ZX series. The factors for this are manifold:

The voice acting in the game is unrefined and it clearly shows that, because of fans railing against Capcom for the preclusion of said voice acting from the original Mega Man ZX, the pressure to get an English voice cast was just too overwhelming. The only redeeming factor in this might be that there actually is some voice acting, period.Good voice acting, though, comes with a heavy price.Grey, the fourteen year-old reploid with no past, sounds like he's well in his prime.Ashe, the fifteen year-old hunter, is reminiscent of Ashelia Dalmasca from Final Fantasy XII, except just not as appealing as Kari Wahlgren's voice role.Characters that might not sound as bad include Aeolus and Vent, who have edifying things to say and don't sound nearly as annoying as Thetis or Model A.

Voice-overs aside, the game is quite intense. The tediously primeval map system from the original ZX is not to be found here.Thank goodness! With more stylus abilities than its predecessor, Mega Man ZX Advent is just as interactive and innovative as The Legend of Zelda:Phantom Hourglass. The difficulty is, however, noteworthy. There are many Pseudoroids with an eclectic variety of abilities that one must memorize in order to choose the correct one to proceed to previously impenetrable areas. The Trans-On (or in the English version, A-Trans) feature may be overwhelming at first, admittedly, and yet the function is facilitated largely by the Profile menu, upon pressing Start and then L.The menu is more complex, and with due reason--14 characters to choose from is no small feat.Capcom has outdone itself this time, and the graphics are stunning.Simply observe the different terrain within one level and you will see what I am referring to.

The background music is its hallmark. There is no better soundtrack to listen to on any Nintendo DS game than to this one. From the classic-Capcom electro beats of Grey's opening stage (the track is called "Destiny") to Ashe's sky-high theme ("Through the Lightning" and "Be One") to the incredibly catchy Vent/Aile Model ZX Megamerge sequence ("Determined Eyes").Which brings up the cinematics of the game.Although it should be noted that Ashe's story has shorter clips, they are still as state-of-the-art as they get, culminating in the Model ZX encounter and transformation sequence.Check out YouTube for these. My favorite is Aile's "Rock On".Capcom can be blamed for a lot things, which include an inept attempt at connecting loose storylines, and the unbearable difficulty of the game itself, but they should also be praised for their innovative graphics, control scheme, and their music!

The basic premise of the game is this. You choose a reploid named Grey, or a human named Ashe, who become the Chosen One for Model A (which reminds one of Axl from the Mega Man X games). You are to protect the world from a serious threat stemming with the same power as your Biometal from reaching its full potential.Prometheus and Pandora are key villains who test your might by pitting you against other "Mega Men" or Chosen Ones, who essentially possess similar powers as yours. If you do not confront the person who is perpetrating this series of events, then war and chaos will befall the reploid and human race, bringing it back to its discordant times dating back to Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero eras.

I won't spoil much more.I hope this will inspire you to purchase the game, and I hope you enjoy it!

Herbert Ortiz

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations Review

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Average Reviews:

I am actually reviewing the whole Phoenix Wright series here. My son loves these games and I have to say they are the most involved and interesting games I've seen yet. He'll spend hours going over 'cases' and has even gone online to research law. It's sparked his interest in having a career in the criminal justice field as well. I can hear him saying "object" into the mic on the DS sometimes! I've taken a look at the game myself and really think the graphics are sharp and characters well developed. He'll also listen to just the music sometimesas well. If your child is interested in law, or if you want something more than the usual video game, this may be it. Very clever and I think it's a great mind-expander!

Mega Man Star Force 3 Black Ace Review

Mega Man Star Force 3 Black Ace
Average Reviews:

The megaman games are classics, and they're all wonderfully designed. The Star Force series is no exception. Not as good as Battle Network but still a LOT of fun. It doesn't rely on the touch-screen very much which is pretty convenient but what reliance it has isn't too hindering. I wouldn't say this game is quite as good as Star Force 2, but it's still very good so far.

Hi! Me again. I'm here to tell you what i think about Tamagotchi connection: Corner shop!

***Intro***
I played this and beat it in about 1 day! It's pretty easy (even though the stores really aren't meant to be hard)! But even though I beat it in a VERY short period of time, it's still
pretty fun! I think they should've added a barber, but it's really fun as it is!

***Gameplay***
Difficulty: medium
It's a little tough to learn how to play but you eventually get it! Gameplay is a little rough on the touch screen but you can easilly fix that by getting a screen protector at the nearest mall!

***Sound***
Catchy and fun! The music is really fun to listen to and it also is a good selection to get to work with!

***Graphics***
Hand drawn and really unique! All the characters look weird and that's why I like them!

***Overall***
This game is really fun and a great time-waster! You should really get this game if you've ever wanted to own a store and work with your favorite tamagotchis!

This game takes after games like Sim Them park and Rollercoaster Tycoon. You must create and manage a theme park that is based on dinosaurs, like the movies were supposed to do. You can manage restaurants, shops, attractions, and dino health. There is some link cable support, as you can trade the DNA of the 100 something dinosaurs in this game.
In this game you can choose the entry fee, feed and track dinosaurs in your park, and come in complete control over Jurassic Park. This game should be a hit, in that it relates to all the Simulaters for PC and Mac.

LUXOR Pharaoh's Challenge Review

LUXOR Pharaoh's Challenge

I can't figure out why that other reviewer gave this game three stars. It's a great game.

I was impressed with how well this translated to the "small screen."The images are crisp and clear, the controls are highly responsive (lag time would kill you on this game), and it is generally an entertaining time-waster.If you're thinking of getting it for a child, understand that there is really no educational value, although I think it encourages cognitive planning. My 7-year-old, who loves the Luxor computer games, is crazy for this one.She is able to play it without the frustration she has experienced with many popular children's DS titles (i.e. the ones with teenage TV personalities on the cover). She figured out the controls without my help, and I didn't hear from her for at least 20 minutes, except, "I'm on level 4!."I enjoy it, as well.

True, it is not terribly different from the computer version.I consider that a positive. We were expecting the Luxor we know and love, which is what we got.If you are interested in a "test drive," go to the Gamehouse website and download the 60-minute trial of one of the computer Luxor games. That should give you enough of a taste to decide if you will like this. The Luxor versions for the computer are the same basic idea as this:shooting marbles at a marble "snake" to make the snake disappear before it gets to the end of the track.

Jewel Quest Expedition Review

Jewel Quest Expedition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jewel Quest is a fun game - the story line that provides that background is pretty lame. 98% of the game revolves around solving "Bejeweled" type puzzles of increasing difficulty. Pretty fun

MY only complaint is that at $30 Jewel Quest is one of the more expensive games for the DS. In fact for an additional $5 you can buy Zelda.... which is more of a true game.Jewel Quest is more along the lines of a game you would buy for a cell phone. It is fun and is great at killing time - but it isn't too in depth.

Pro's

- Fun puzzles can help kill significant time on flights.
- The DS stylus works very well for this game
- Lots of variety in the puzzles
- I like the use of the "Gold Coins" that allow you to complete one unmarked spot.Con's

- A little expensive for the game's content - I think $20 is more appropriate but to each their own.
- The "story" is more annoying than anything.

As a whole - not bad - definitely worth buy if you ever see the game discounted on Amazon or on a discount shelf at a local store!

My Japanese Coach Review

My Japanese Coach
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying that I have been studying Japanese off and on for many years now. I learned some of the basic words and simple sentence structures as well as to read and write Katakana. However, I've never made a serious attempt to go beyond that, until now.

I have used many computer Japanese learning programs and found all of them to be totally inadequate. I was cautiously optimistic about this DS title, but for under $[...] I decided to give it a try. Wow, I am impressed! The lessons are well structured and introduce around 10 words per lesson (from what I've seen so far), unlike books which want you to remember dozens and dozens of words right from the start. The voice quality is superb and (unlike most other recordings I have heard) does not speak so fast that you can't follow it. I love the feature where you can record your voice and compare it to the native speaker's, including comparing the wave forms. This helps you learn the correct timing and pace when speaking. The games are fun, but you need pretty fast reflexes for the whack-a-mole game unless you set it on easy.

This program does have a few flaws. The stroke order for a few of the kanas is off (stroke order is VERY important in writing Japanese correctly). Also, hiragana is introduced too slowly in my opinion, but this is probably intentional as to not scare off people who have never written in Japenese. That being said, if you are serious about learning Japanese this shouldn't be your only resource anyways. I highly recommend Easy Hiragana: First Steps to Basic Japanese Writing (Passport Books) and especially Easy Katakana.

Despite these minor issues, I think that any serious student of Japanese will benefit immensely from using this program. Motivation and determination are required to learn any language since it takes a huge investment of time and study. Using something that is as engaging as this will keep you interested. Plus, it is a game system after all, so if you need a break you can always pop in Zelda for a while! ;)

This game has lots of strong spots in it and some weak spots.
The game has over 30 characters all with good graphics. One of the weak spots is the part in story mode where you have to unlock Broly. It tookme an hour to even figure out how to unlock him. In the game there is a part called free battle where you get to pick out your characters. You can also have up to three characters. Out of all my games this is probably my favorite one.

Urbz: Sims In The City Review

Urbz: Sims In The City
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Urbz: Sims in the City is one of the most enjoyable Sims games I have played in a long time. The Urbz provided me with an excellent gaming experience, with an astounding background story behind it. This game could have been better in some ways, but other than that, its a good game. You live in a small town called Miniopolis, thats trying to get taken over by an old rich guy named Daddy Bigbucks. During the game you have to do various missions to stop him, and these missions can go from easy, to unbelievably hard. Here's some pros and cons that I've conducted from the game...

Pros:

1. Pretty Realistic. Your Urb will have to eat, sleep, use the restroom, shower, and have a good time to keep going. All restroom and shower scenes are blocked, so there is nothing too inappropiate. If you don't eat or sleep, your Urb will pass out, or if you don't use the restroom in time, you will end up "doing your business" wherever you are at the time. Also, towards the beginning of the game, you will have to work to get your pay, and your house will get broken into if you do not pay for security. You can make friends, and lose friends, or just decorate your house with furniture. There's also Rep Groups, like there in real life. Richies, Streeties, Nerdies, and Artsies inhabit the town you live in, and you will have to choose what rep group you want to be in.

2. The Furniture. Theres a good variety of furniture that you can buy in the game. You can get things like DJ Turntables, or smoothie machines.

3. Create-A-Pet. Towards the end of the game, you are able to create your own pet by splicing DNA. You can create things from T-Rex's to Jackalopes, all depending on how well you splice.

Cons:

1. Always having to rush off to the restroom, or having to sleep can get annoying if you need to get your relationship with someone up to a certain level.

2. Graphics could be better. Seriously, this game looks like it was from the GBA! The Graphics could have been in actual 3D to push the DS's capabilities, but sadly, this isn't the case.

3. There is LOTS of reading. I didn't have trouble with this, but some younger kids might have trouble understanding the dialogue.

Overall, I rate this game a 4.5 out of 5. This is an enjoyable Sims game that is fun for teenagers, and adults. Happy Gaming! :)

Metroid Prime Hunters Review

Metroid Prime Hunters
Average Reviews:

I bought this game a couple days ago, and after getting familiar with it, I can finally write a review.

Graphics - Let's face it, the ds isn't known for it's graphical quality, especially when it comes to 3D.But these graphics are great. They aren't as good as todays standard consoles, but I don't recall any N64 or Playstation game looking this good.Best out there right now for the DS so I give it a 5/5.Control - Control with the stylus takes a while to get used to, but once you get the hang of it it's a lot like using the mouse for a computer. If your left handed don't worry because they have a special setting made special for you guys.If you still can't get use to the stylus then you can use the buttons for aiming. 4.5/5Sound - If you've heard the music from the original metroid prime then you've heard the music to this game.Sometimes can be very intense to build up suspense of what's going to happen.4/5Replay Value - Just like the other metroid prime games, you have a log book.Playing through the first time, you can ignore this, but filling it up to 100% can be a challenge. You also have energy and missle expansions.Single Player mode is pretty short though.

As for the Online, this is an excellent feature. There's a battle mode and you can chose from any of the character's you have beaten. This can provide for hours of fun.You can also create friends and rivals who you can compete with in 7 different forms of battle. You can also text and voice chat with your friends which was unbelievably clear.I could understand every word when I tried this.(with Online) 5/5

Fun Quality - I personally got bored with the previous metroid prime games with the gamecube, but for some reason this one is different.Maybe it's the online maybe it's the two screens and touch screen, I don't know, but i think what it is is that it's more action orientated and I love action.5/5

Buy or Not - I haven't always liked shooter games like this, but I really enjoyed this one.I would reccomend to BUY.

Overall Score4.7 / 5 (9.4/10)

Rounds up to 5 stars

Once in a while, a Japanese game gets translated, takes the scene by storm, and makes people wonder why it didn't happen earlier. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney has the potential to become such a game. Originally released only in Japan, "Gyakuten Saiban" (loosely translated as "reversal judgment") is a popular legal simulation game for the GBA that gives you a chance to become a defense attorney. The series has already spanned three instalments, with one more being slated for release for the Nintendo DS next year. Before that happens, however, Capcom released "Gyakuten Saiban: Yomigaeru Gyakuten" in September to pave the title's transition from the GBA to the DS. The game included a fully translated English version, which is eventually released in the US as Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (PWAA) recently.

So, what really is PWAA? Well, it's basically a point-and-click adventure game that is set in a legal background. As rookie lawyer Phoenix Wright, you'll take on five cases in this game, which includes four from the first Gyakuten Saiban game, as well as a brand new case that was created with the features of the DS In mind.

The game takes place primarily in two platforms - investigation and court proceedings. In the earlier scenario, you go from place to place, talking to people and examining crime scenes to gather evidence that may be important in proving your client's innocence. Although the investigation process could be tedious at times, it's never dull since the game throws up so many colourful characters and stereotypes to keep you busy with. Also, despite a large number of items to examine in the various locales pertaining to a certain case, the game is rather helpful as it automatically includes all evidence that will somehow have some bearings on the case. This means that you'll never really need to wonder what's useful and what's not, thus reducing information overload. It also essentially leaves you with the task of finding out why these evidences are important, which gives the game a better focus.

Information that you gather during the investigation will be added to your court record, which is one of your greatest weapons in court. The court record also provides additional information about the evidences that are collected. For example, you may score an autopsy report from the detective in charge of the case, but it's only when you look into this report in the record that you'll get a summary of the contents. This applies to most, if not all the evidences at your disposal, and because of that, reading the court record becomes an important task that you should never forget. The game also has the knack of turning the most insignificant looking clue into a decisive one, so you should take heed that a screwdriver, for example, could turn out to be that one clue that nails the truth for you in court.

During court proceedings, apart from coming against prosecutors who're eager to convince the judge that your client is guilty, you'll also come face-to-face with witnesses who can either make or break your defense. You'll get to cross-examine these witnesses as well, which is where the fun really begins. Almost every testimony you come across in this game has some weakness or two, which you can exploit to turn the tide in your favor. Each testimony is broken down into statements, and each statement allows you the opportunity either to press for more information, or object by presenting a contradictory evidence. While this may sound easy, finding the exact evidence to present could still be a tricky task if you don't follow the case closely. Of course, being good at solving puzzles of this nature helps a great deal, but the cases are all designed in a logical, though linear, fashion that even those who're not exactly quick-witted can guess the killer if only they exercise some diligence and commonsense.

Now, as there's usually only one correct objection for each testimony, it's entirely likely that, when confronted by a bottleneck, you eliminate incorrect choices by simply presenting everything in your record if no form of restriction is set. To prevent this possible abuse, the game has a penalty system that reduces your "health" if you present a wrong objection. The health gauge is represented by exclamation marks on the screen. Each incorrect objection will lead to a dramatic explosion of one exclamation mark. Do this for five times, and you'll be greeted with the game over screen. While this may sound harsh, it actually encourages you to spend time thinking through the cases, which should in turn lead to a more satisfying gaming experience.

Now, there seems to be so many things to do in the game, so the controls must be pretty complex? Well, not exactly. In fact, the controls of PWAA are so user-friendly, you can play through the game without even using the buttons on your DS at all. Every action can be performed by clicking the respective buttons on the touch screen with your stylus. Want to move to another area? Click "move", and a menu will appear to ask where do you want to go. Want to examine an item? Point your stylus to it, tap it, and you'll get your findings. It's just that simple. Apart from waving your stylus, the game also makes use of the DS' voice recognition ability, so it's possible for you to shout "Objection!" into the mic to counter a witness' statement. Similarly, you can also shout "Hold it!" to press a statement, and "Take that!" to present a decisive evidence. Although the idea is a little quirky, it does give you that sense of satisfaction, especially when you finally deal the murderer with a forceful "Take that!" after a tiresome three-day trial. The voice recognition, however, is never forced upon you, so if you're not into talking to a machine, you can always rely on your good old stylus.

Additional controls are added for the fifth case of PWAA. As I mentioned earlier, this fifth case was designed specifically for the DS. This brand new case fully utilizes the DS' innovative features. You'll get to rotate and zoom-in on evidence to examine them more thoroughly. You'll also get to join pieces of broken evidence together. You can even set powder on your screen, and then blow it away to gather fingerprints. All these features really provide a strong involvement for the player - they make you feel that you're right in the thick of the action.

Graphically, PWAA uses an anime style to portray the various quirky characters. The style should appeal to most people, even though they expectedly become repetitive as the game progresses. Still, as you'll be spending most of the time reading the conversations, you'll tend to be more forgiving when Phoenix Wright points his finger out again (for the umpteenth time) as he tells the judge that the witness' testimony is faulty. The audios of the game are also heavily anime-inspired. The music blends in with the action really well, and it's quite obvious that the developers actually tried to create different background music that are unique to the different characters. Again, this complemented the game greatly.

All in all, PWAA is a game that I'd recommend to all DS owners, even those who're not exactly interested in murder mysteries. The game may be a little too linear for players who tend to think ahead of time, but it's still a great adventure for those who want to try something different. It's not everyday that you become a lawyer, and I'm pretty sure that after you relieve your role as Phoenix Wright, you'll be itching for a sequel. If playing a quality game is a thing for you, then you should really consider making an appointment with PWAA.

Dino Master: Dig Discover Duel Review

Dino Master: Dig Discover Duel

Remeber Qix? You get a big field where you move a little guy to swipe portions of this field while avoiding attacks. You do so until there is a small enough portion of field and then you get rated. Yeah... you remember, this game remembers too which is why they use it as the way you get new fossils.
There's a decent selection of levels to choose form and a multitude of baddies to try to stop you from stealing the field (All giant bugs for some reason) making that portion of the game fun. Just like it was way back when.
The problem arises when you try to use the dino battle system. It can be described as slightly more advanced than rock/paper/scissors. As a matter of fact it's so bad that if you really want to train little dinos for battles I'd pick up Fossil League DS Instead. It has level gains, exploration, and teams of dinos to train and battle.

this is great for the Qix rip-off but leave it there, or at least try it first.
