Puzz3D CD: The Orient Express Review

Puzz3D CD: The Orient Express
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have always loved jigsaw puzzles. But this is the first time I have ever put one together on a computer. Puzz 3D Orient Express has 4 difficulty levels, from easy to super-challenging. I started off on the third levelwhich is the challenging level. That level is just as challenging as the1000-peice puzzles you buy in the store. The only difference is this: onceyou put the puzzle together, the fun doesn't stop. The difficulty level youchoose determines how much of the Orient Express you can explore. You getto meet all kinds of different people as well as learn about the history ofthe train. Plus, during the exploration phase, there are other games alongthe way as well as clues to a mystery guest who is supposed to board thetrain. I haven't finished the exploration portion yet, but I am alreadythinking about going back to rebuild the train at the super-challenginglevel. This way, I will have unlimited access to the entire train. ThisPuzzle is very addictive and fun.

DS Phoenix Wright 2 (Japanese version; English language) Review

DS Phoenix Wright 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Phoenix Wright 2, was originally released on Gameboy Advance, but, like Phoenix Wright 1, has made the jump to Nintendo DS.

The English translation in this game is very well done.It has many more puns and Internet pop culture references than Phoenix Wright one.Apart from the Judge always calling the new (female) prosecutor 'sir' the English was perfect, and much funnier than the English Version the first Phoenix Wright.

Amongst all the old faces, several new characters are added to the lineup, including, perhaps the most ferocious prosecutor yet,Franziska von Karma and Maya's adorable cousin, Pearl.

Not surprisingly, the gameplay, music and graphics are almost identical to Phoenix Wright 1.A few new elements has been added or improved on.Maya gives you her Magatama, a magical jewel that allows you to see when someone is lying. While this can not be used in a court scene, it can be used in the detective scenes between court sessions.

Also, in Phoenix Wright, you had 5 exclamation marks in the court scenes. When you made a false accusation, one of these were taken away by the judge. This has been replaced by a blue bar. Now, if you make a large error, the judge will take away a larger section of the bar. It's now more risky than ever to take guesses.Evidence is everything in courts.

These two editions make the game significantly more difficult than the first. In addition, the cases are longer, and more complex.

However, unlike the first game, there is not a new DS exclusive case. There are only the four original Game Boy Advance cases to play.

Unfortunately, there is very little replay value in this game.

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations Review

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Average Reviews:

I am actually reviewing the whole Phoenix Wright series here. My son loves these games and I have to say they are the most involved and interesting games I've seen yet. He'll spend hours going over 'cases' and has even gone online to research law. It's sparked his interest in having a career in the criminal justice field as well. I can hear him saying "object" into the mic on the DS sometimes! I've taken a look at the game myself and really think the graphics are sharp and characters well developed. He'll also listen to just the music sometimesas well. If your child is interested in law, or if you want something more than the usual video game, this may be it. Very clever and I think it's a great mind-expander!

Indigo Prophecy Review

Indigo Prophecy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There have been games throughout the years that have truly done something original, different and completely engaging. It always seems to be that these games fall by the wayside in terms of popularity which is a shame.Indigo Prophecy falls into this category as an original game with a fantastic premise and incredibly exciting gameplay.

Never before have I played a game that was so interactive in its story-telling.When trying to describe this game, I would point to God of War, a PS2 game in which there were scenes where you have timed button presses that would move forward a cutscene. It helped bring you into the story, the cutscenes so that it was you that were doing all of the cool acrobatic manuevers killing the hydra.Another game that used this to a lesser effect was Resident Evil 4, for example with the knife fight that you had to push buttons to keep Leon safe.Indigo Prophecy takes this idea and pushes it to the extreme.

IP is basically and incredibly interactive movie. It mixes the adventure genre, which is seldom seen on console, and movies and melds them into a cohesive and incredibly engaging story. It starts off with a bang as you immediately find yourself killing someone you don't know in a diner. You feel like you're not in control of your actions and as a result you have a body in a restroom and a policeman drinking coffee in the restaurant. What do you do?You're free to act from here on out.Do you leave the body and rush out?Do you hide the body? What about the blood? What about the blood on you? What about the knife? When you leave do you pay your bill? You can take care of all or none of the options above. And the story will be different, sometimes marginally sometimes drastically.Oh, and by the way, that cop sitting outside needs to use the restroom and soon the screen will split and you better be out of there before he makes it to the restroom.

This opening sequence exemplifies everything this game is about.Choices, story and gameplay all merged into one.But innovation doesn't end there. As soon as Lucas (the murdering protagonist) is free of the diner, you take control of two police detectives who investigate the scene. You can switch between the two on the fly and you have to find clues, make theories and basically do everything in your power to catch Lucas. Its this give and take gameplay, where you have to play one side against the other, that truly gives the game a sense of urgency and excitement.

Going back to the God of War example, when you have cutscenes in this game, you better not put your controller down.Gameplay pushes forward the story-centered bits as well.Whether its doing a simon says type control scheme to manuever your character past cars that are hurtling toward him, alternating between the L and R trigger as fast as you can to save someone who's drowning or using the R stick to make dialogue choices on the fly (you're timed) to hear all you can, the game makes sure to bring you into the story. Its very effective and really ratchets up the tension.

If there is one sore spot in the game its the graphics. While not bad, exactly, they don't necessarily push the Xbox in the way that this last year of Xbox life should. It looks like a first or possibly second generation Xbox game.Artistically the game is good. The characters in the cutscenes move really well and realistically. And there is never a moment of lag or skipping seen in a lot of games today. The character's faces have some nice emotion to them and the graphics aren't stellar, like I said, but they do a decent job. There's a ton of aliasing, however, which is sad.

Another sore spot is the controls. When you are in direct control of your character (i.e. actually moving them as opposed to having control of the cutscenes via button pressing) the game is pretty loose. It reminds me of playing the old Resident Evil games. You have the cinematic camera which causes some confusion as to which direction you should push your character. As a result, you will do a lot of figure 8s in the game which can cause a lot of problems when you have to hide the evidence because a cop is at your door and the timer is going down.Character animation while moving is also very stiff and a big difference from the cut scene animation.

The audio is terrific, however. While the box says the game does not run in 5.1 in game, I think it lies.My receiver lights up whenever 5.1 is being used and its always lit with this game. And it sounds like 5.1 is being used. The voice acting is absolutely wonderful and professional. Each voice matches the character and it helps enhance this feeling of playing a murder mystery movie. With voice acting becoming so important in games today, this is most welcome and really helps sell the game.Musically, the game also excels by using the very talented Angelo Badalamenti to score it.That name might not mean much on the outset but he has created scores to many Hollywood movies including most by David Lynch (Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr., Twin Peaks) but also Dark Water, Arlington Road, etc.The score is absolutely beautiful and moving; it really fits in with what is happening on screen.

What this game does best is meld the story-telling of a movie with the gameplay of video games. It exposes the limitations of both and yet uses the best of both to create an engaging, moving and very interactive story. For me, this game is a perfect building block for video games.I can overlook most of its flaws because it is so different, so exciting and so damn cool.It warrants a 5 star review simply because of what it did.I would most heartedly recommend this game to those who love a good story, like action adventure games and want to be impressed with what video games and movies can accomplish together.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Review

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Once in a while, a Japanese game gets translated, takes the scene by storm, and makes people wonder why it didn't happen earlier. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney has the potential to become such a game. Originally released only in Japan, "Gyakuten Saiban" (loosely translated as "reversal judgment") is a popular legal simulation game for the GBA that gives you a chance to become a defense attorney. The series has already spanned three instalments, with one more being slated for release for the Nintendo DS next year. Before that happens, however, Capcom released "Gyakuten Saiban: Yomigaeru Gyakuten" in September to pave the title's transition from the GBA to the DS. The game included a fully translated English version, which is eventually released in the US as Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (PWAA) recently.

So, what really is PWAA? Well, it's basically a point-and-click adventure game that is set in a legal background. As rookie lawyer Phoenix Wright, you'll take on five cases in this game, which includes four from the first Gyakuten Saiban game, as well as a brand new case that was created with the features of the DS In mind.

The game takes place primarily in two platforms - investigation and court proceedings. In the earlier scenario, you go from place to place, talking to people and examining crime scenes to gather evidence that may be important in proving your client's innocence. Although the investigation process could be tedious at times, it's never dull since the game throws up so many colourful characters and stereotypes to keep you busy with. Also, despite a large number of items to examine in the various locales pertaining to a certain case, the game is rather helpful as it automatically includes all evidence that will somehow have some bearings on the case. This means that you'll never really need to wonder what's useful and what's not, thus reducing information overload. It also essentially leaves you with the task of finding out why these evidences are important, which gives the game a better focus.

Information that you gather during the investigation will be added to your court record, which is one of your greatest weapons in court. The court record also provides additional information about the evidences that are collected. For example, you may score an autopsy report from the detective in charge of the case, but it's only when you look into this report in the record that you'll get a summary of the contents. This applies to most, if not all the evidences at your disposal, and because of that, reading the court record becomes an important task that you should never forget. The game also has the knack of turning the most insignificant looking clue into a decisive one, so you should take heed that a screwdriver, for example, could turn out to be that one clue that nails the truth for you in court.

During court proceedings, apart from coming against prosecutors who're eager to convince the judge that your client is guilty, you'll also come face-to-face with witnesses who can either make or break your defense. You'll get to cross-examine these witnesses as well, which is where the fun really begins. Almost every testimony you come across in this game has some weakness or two, which you can exploit to turn the tide in your favor. Each testimony is broken down into statements, and each statement allows you the opportunity either to press for more information, or object by presenting a contradictory evidence. While this may sound easy, finding the exact evidence to present could still be a tricky task if you don't follow the case closely. Of course, being good at solving puzzles of this nature helps a great deal, but the cases are all designed in a logical, though linear, fashion that even those who're not exactly quick-witted can guess the killer if only they exercise some diligence and commonsense.

Now, as there's usually only one correct objection for each testimony, it's entirely likely that, when confronted by a bottleneck, you eliminate incorrect choices by simply presenting everything in your record if no form of restriction is set. To prevent this possible abuse, the game has a penalty system that reduces your "health" if you present a wrong objection. The health gauge is represented by exclamation marks on the screen. Each incorrect objection will lead to a dramatic explosion of one exclamation mark. Do this for five times, and you'll be greeted with the game over screen. While this may sound harsh, it actually encourages you to spend time thinking through the cases, which should in turn lead to a more satisfying gaming experience.

Now, there seems to be so many things to do in the game, so the controls must be pretty complex? Well, not exactly. In fact, the controls of PWAA are so user-friendly, you can play through the game without even using the buttons on your DS at all. Every action can be performed by clicking the respective buttons on the touch screen with your stylus. Want to move to another area? Click "move", and a menu will appear to ask where do you want to go. Want to examine an item? Point your stylus to it, tap it, and you'll get your findings. It's just that simple. Apart from waving your stylus, the game also makes use of the DS' voice recognition ability, so it's possible for you to shout "Objection!" into the mic to counter a witness' statement. Similarly, you can also shout "Hold it!" to press a statement, and "Take that!" to present a decisive evidence. Although the idea is a little quirky, it does give you that sense of satisfaction, especially when you finally deal the murderer with a forceful "Take that!" after a tiresome three-day trial. The voice recognition, however, is never forced upon you, so if you're not into talking to a machine, you can always rely on your good old stylus.

Additional controls are added for the fifth case of PWAA. As I mentioned earlier, this fifth case was designed specifically for the DS. This brand new case fully utilizes the DS' innovative features. You'll get to rotate and zoom-in on evidence to examine them more thoroughly. You'll also get to join pieces of broken evidence together. You can even set powder on your screen, and then blow it away to gather fingerprints. All these features really provide a strong involvement for the player - they make you feel that you're right in the thick of the action.

Graphically, PWAA uses an anime style to portray the various quirky characters. The style should appeal to most people, even though they expectedly become repetitive as the game progresses. Still, as you'll be spending most of the time reading the conversations, you'll tend to be more forgiving when Phoenix Wright points his finger out again (for the umpteenth time) as he tells the judge that the witness' testimony is faulty. The audios of the game are also heavily anime-inspired. The music blends in with the action really well, and it's quite obvious that the developers actually tried to create different background music that are unique to the different characters. Again, this complemented the game greatly.

All in all, PWAA is a game that I'd recommend to all DS owners, even those who're not exactly interested in murder mysteries. The game may be a little too linear for players who tend to think ahead of time, but it's still a great adventure for those who want to try something different. It's not everyday that you become a lawyer, and I'm pretty sure that after you relieve your role as Phoenix Wright, you'll be itching for a sequel. If playing a quality game is a thing for you, then you should really consider making an appointment with PWAA.

Riven: The Sequel to Myst Review

Riven: The Sequel to Myst
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Riven is a visual masterpiece. Set in a beautifully rendered world of still images and animated cut scenes, Riven takes you through an intriguing story and wonderfully creative places. Riven isn't just a pretty gamethough... it is composed of challenging (and often frustrating) interactivepuzzles that must be solved to complete the game.
If you've played gameslike the 7th Guest, or Myst, you'll find Riven challenging. If you've neverplayed any puzzle-based games before, you'll find Riven insanely hard. Ifyou are not familiar with interactive puzzles, I would highly recommendstarting with Myst. Not only is it easier and almost as beautifullyrendered as Riven, but it'll do a great job priming you for the moredifficult puzzles you'll encounter in this game.
While I cannot praisethe creators of Riven enough for the depth of their creativity, I cannotrecommend this game to just anyone. Riven is perfect for the avid puzzlesolver, but much too difficult for the casual game player. Younger children(and most teens) may lose interest in this game very quickly, as thepuzzles will often stop a player dead in their tracks until they can musterup the brainpower to figure them out. If you're looking for action, thisisn't the place you'll find it.
On the other hand, Riven contains noviolence, and is definitely a game that will make you think. You can't saythat about many games these days, which is one of the reasons why this gameis perfectly suited for a more cognitive crowd.
Riven gets four out offive stars because I believe that some puzzles may be out of the reach ofmost people without the use of a hint book. Regardless of this drawback,it's one of the best games in it's class... and I highly recommend it.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 Review

Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The great thing about the Nintendo DS is that there is so much innovation to it.Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is a game that has been done time and time again, but on the DS they can take it to a new level, and strangely it works really well. For any gamer looking for a sophisticated, engaging story, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is right up your alley. It's engaging, simple, but still manages to be a complex game full of heart. Those who really enjoy Film Noir will also really get a kick out of this.

Kyle Hyde is a former NYPD detective. His partner was Brian Bradley.Under circumstances unknown Kyle ended up having to shoot Brian and his body fell into the Hudson River. The body was never recovered, but Kyle still believes that Brian is alive.Three years later, in 1979, Kyle is working as a Private Investigator for those unwilling to go to the police for help.A client has asked him to locate certain items left at the Hotel Dusk.Kyle, of course, accepts. As the mystery unfolds, Kyle begins to learn what really happened to his former partner.

Part of makes Hotel Dusk work is that it is very stylistic.Kyle is a likeable guy, despite that he's stereotyped into being the alcoholic ex-cop.His character really comes alive. And it isn't just his character that comes to life, it's all the characters that you talk to throughout the game. Each and every one of them is unique and distinct.Along those lines the dialog is really crafty and humanistic, to a point where you feel less like you're playing a game, and more like you're reading an engrossing detective novel.

To compliment the game even more, the visual art style is nothing short of fantastic. The character designs are hand-drawn, but they're uniquely done. Each character is drawn in a way that it says something about them. You'll be captivated by it.The environments themselves also look pretty good. The 3D models are pretty good looking. There aren't that many DS games out there that actually have a lot of 3D animation, so any time you get to see some it's a good thing.

The most interesting aspect about the game is the style which it is played in.You hold the DS sideways, as if it were a book. The primary control of the game comes from the stylus. You'll use it to navigate Kyle through the Hotel Dusk, and you'll use it to observe items and talk to people. It's simple, and it feels very much like some PC games of the past where you used the mouse to point and click. You'll find items you need to use all over the place.Of course this brings about one of the games few shortcomings. It's fairly linear, and you'll often find items well before you need to use them.At least most of the puzzles aren't hard, and they're not presented in a "Resident Evil" style fashion. So you won't be asking yourself questions like, "Why do I have to do THIS to get THAT?"The puzzles are completely logical and grounded in reality.

The good news is Hotel Dusk isn't about the puzzle solving and item collecting nearly as much as it's about the characters that play into the overall storyline. This is a very heavily story driven game, much more so than even most mainstream RPGs.You'll meet characters who will lie to you, and those who don't want to tell you things or give you little snippets. When you engage in conversation you'll often be given the chance to ask questions. You are, after all, a PI.Be careful, though. As a PI you need to ask the RIGHT questions.Asking the wrong questions can cause the game to end.So ask the right questions and get the right information.

This brings about another of the games few shortcomings, except this is a rather big one.The game is EXTREMELY dialog heavy. When I say that I'm not kidding. Some conversations can last for very long stretches of time. Not all of them are necessary, and it's even worse when you figure out what's going on, yet you've still got to sit through all the dialog anyway. To put it more simple it's like when a novel drags on for pages upon pages and a lot of what you read is irrelevant to the plot.Hotel Dusk doesn't veer away from the plot often, but it does ramble on and on about basic plot elements quite often. It can be frustrating, especially when you just want to play the game.Likewise, there's not a snippet of voice acting.I'm not saying the entire game has to have it, but it seems like at some points they should have had some.

Another thing that may turn a few people away. The story, while fantastic, is also pretty slow, and as much as I love games like this, you have to admit that those who love fast paced action adventure games will have a hard time getting into this, especially because the "point and click" formula is pretty dated. To a point, those used to fast paced action might be bored through this. If, however, you enjoy reading (as I do) then this is quite a relaxing experience.

Hotel Dusk is a fascinating game.Showing that some old school elements will never die. It's engaging, captivating, and is a well told story, complete with all the elements of a good story. It's a little slow at times, and it can also ramble, but if you're patient and stick with it, you'll be well rewarded in the end.

On the Positive Side:

+Unique storyline that's well told and engaging
+Fantastic character development throughout the entire game
+Simple to play, yet hard to master
+A good soundtrack to get the mood straight
+The Puzzles are not over the top, but instead are pretty simple to grasp
+Crafty dialog makes the game perfect for those who love to read

On the Negative Side:

-It gets off to a slow start
-No voice acting to speak of
-Some of the games moments are very dialog heavy, which can be very frustrating if you figure things out faster than Kyle does, and can be especially frustrating when it rambles

Beyond Atlantis (Jewel Case) Review

Beyond Atlantis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this game about a year before I actually played it.Too "Mystisized".Now I have played and I'm sorry I didn't play it sooner.I'd give it 5 stars in both categories, only I found that end was kind of hokey.Doesn't take away that much from the fun of playing it overall, though. The puzzles are totally in context with each world - not a common thing these days, and you just have to realize that to get through them. What it should be about, right?

There are certainly parts of the game that ARE frustrating, but that's the fun of a challenge. Each world - and each is pretty complete - was a new adventure, and that IS what an "adventure game" is supposed to be about.

Graphics are surprisingly good, given that it's not a new game, and the details in each world were truly and delightfully surprising.I'm a graphics freak.Other thing I am is a music freak.IF you ARE going to provide music, then please make it worth MY while. This game does it.

Given that this is an older game, there is the usual disc stitching - mildly annoying, but not THAT much.I'm constantly searching for adventure games, and one that works is not to be blown off. This one does.

I'd consider it well worth the money - which isn't that much now.
Truly recommended, and worth the money.

Nancy Drew Dossier: Resorting to Danger Review

Nancy Drew Dossier: Resorting to Danger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The entire game only takes about 3-4 hours to play which was really my main disappointment with this purchase. However, I paid over twenty dollars to buy this on CD.Now, you can purchase it for less then seven dollars as a video download on Amazon -- and then it is a bargain. This is a new format for HER Interactive. It eliminates many of the aspects of the other Nancy Drew games that I find frustrating/boring. The dialog is snappier and there is much less of it. You spend less time navigating Nancy from location to location. There are plenty of mini games and the hidden object component is fun. The objects are very easy to find as your curser glows and sparkles as you pass over (or get close to) an object. Some of the mini games are repetitive although they do get more challenging as you progress through the game. If I was able to change the game, I would make it longer and add more puzzles and perhaps make it more challenging. I was able to complete the entire game easily without resorting to the Internet for hints. I would definitely buy more in this series if they were available as inexpensive video downloads.

This game's graphics are awesome...well, for Gameboy Color, that is. I'm stuck. Everything is confusing! I look everywhere I can and I get stuck! It's rated 'T' for teen, because of so-called "violence". Well, there's like no violence. The only reason it should be rated 'T' is because the game is so hard(and whenever you're about to go into combat mode, it shows Edward and he says 'what the [heck] is that?'). I probably should've saved my money. Save your money too, unless you plan on playing the game for 5 minutes and then giving up!

Half Life Review

Half Life
Average Reviews:

Let me cut right to the point: as far as action games go, this is THE game to own. It wouldn't matter if you bought another action game, because they will never compare to this. Unlike most games where they throw you rightinto the action, Half-Life lets you adjust to a normal, every-day settingfor a while, just before bringing it crashing down over your head via adimensional portal to an alien world. See, you play a normal, blandscientist guy named Gordon Freeman who works at a secret research basemiles underground. This place makes the fabeled Area 51 seem like a littleshack. Anyway, you show up and work, only your experiment is interruptedwhen it explodes and opens a gateway to an alien world. Now these aliensaren't really friendly, and start crossing over to our world to tear upsome stuff. You race to the surface, where you know help will be and youcan get them to help save your friends, right? Big mistake, pal. The helpcomes in the form of military commandos, on a mission to wipe out thislittle disaster, and this involves silencing you and your co-workerspermenately. So, now what? The artwork is amazing, the story is compelling.Words simply can't deescribe this masterpiece worthy of the title Game ofthe Year. Plus, for those of you new to action and first-person shootergames, there's even a short but handy training area where you learn how todo the stuff you need to know for this game. Overall, this is the best betfor any computer game fan.

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth Review

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're a fan of the Ace Attorney series, you know that the pattern of point-n-click investigation and courtroom arguements was starting to wear thin. New characters and a few new gameplay options helped to buoy the setup, but after the prior volume, it seemed to have run out of steam. Enter Miles Edgeworth, with a rather impressive revamp.

Graphics and gameplay have rather improved, and the characters are crisper and better detailed. Also, a more interactive setup, including a large environment 2d character motion, has been added, rather than having to do a screen by screen analysis, allowing for more depth and a better feel to the story.

In place of the rather tedious courtroom tennis match that made up the majority of the AA games, the arguments are much shorter and separated, though the climax encounter tends to drag out a tad longer than necessary. Also included are logical jumps, which edgeworth uses multiple evidence pieces to piece together story bits to advance the plot, rather than relying on finding that last piece of evidence or wandering around looking for the new character interaction.

Audio still is a let down, in that theres little to no voice apart from the few cries of "objection" and "hold it," the mainstays of the series. I'm still puzzled that more can't be included, if only a few crucial snippets from the main characters.

Overall, this is a very good revamp. A lot of it is the same true, but the main meat and potatoes has been overhauled, and prevents much of the frustrated searching that bogged down much of the Ace attorney games.

Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir Review

I'm 36 and this game is great! I've played this type on the computer, but now I have it for DS and it's a lot of fun. There are so many things to find and different ways to find them (xray, underwater goggles, flashlight). There are other things to do other than look for hidden pictures. There are puzzles that you have to piece together and contraptions you have to figure out. I've been playing it for three days straight and I'm not even close to finding out the mystery. This is a great game!!! Even my 7 year old looks over my shoulder as I play it and helps me find stuff. If you love the PC versions - then you will love this one too.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time Review

I purchased this game for my grandson's 10th birthday. He had already given me a "hint" as to what he wanted. After he opened this gift, he was "locked in" for the rest of the day. Nothing else mattered. The birthday party went on without him as he was off into another world. I have not played this game myself, but I am sure he considers it his best gift. To grab and keep the attention of a 10-year old, it has to be the best.

The Lost Cases of Sherlock Holmes Review

The Lost Cases of Sherlock Holmes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a fan of the Sherlok Holmes TV show and try to purchase any & all Holmes PC games. [The same for Agatha Christie.] The package consists of 16 books/stories [puzzles]. Each puzzle consists of dialog, searching for hidden objects and choosing the culprit. All 16 follow the SAME pattern. The puzzles are also timed [~30 min.] As expected there is an increase in "difficulty" as you progress. I do not know if the story line really helps in solving the mystery for I usually skip it to stay with the hunt.
the mechanics of the game(s) are well done. The puzzle REPETITION is truly the limiting factor for a this game.

Nancy Drew: Danger By Design Review

Nancy Drew: Danger By Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game comes in two disks; both are needed for install, but only one is needed for play. The game begins with a peek at Nancy Drew's bedroom and has a creative way to access the tutorial.

The graphics were nice. Many areas Nancy visits are light and sunny, as opposed to other games. The people were well-drawn and executed, though the people of Haunted Carousel are probably the best so far. Interacting with them was odd, though. Nancy didn't seem to need to talk to people very much, or be able to talk to them face-to face all the time. Often, when she'd go to see them, they would have nothing to say or be busy behind a door.

The puzzles ran the gamut, from very easy to "Universal Hints, here I come!" (Too bad for me, there was no UHS help when I played the game, though I did find a walkthrough.) I did have to cheat twice. Once, I feel it was something I could have figured out for myself if I had been patient enough. The other time, I truly feel a player would be hard pressed to get.Overall, though, I was pleased with the puzzles. Most puzzles fell in the middle of the spectrum and were challenging without being too difficult.

Moving around town was comfortable. Nancy uses a map of the Metro in the same manner she uses maps in other games like Scarlet Hand and Stay Tuned. However, the process of getting from one place to the next seems much faster in this game than in those games. There was also one cutaway similar to the tunnel-walking in Deception Island. The cutaway in Design is more enjoyable because is not as long and a flashlight is used, allowing the player to see what Nancy walks through.

Calling people is annoying in this game because the airline has conveniently lost Nancy's cell phone, and she uses land lines to make calls. To call the US, she has to dial a calling card AND THEN the number desired, dialing about 21 numbers for each call! Making calls takes forever.

Nancy needs to spend and earn money in this game. The manner in which she does this is not as irritating as in Old Clock, because in this game she does not risk losing money while making money.

Overall, I really liked this game. It has a much different feel to it. Why? Partly the locale. Partly the light and sunny atmosphere of many scenes. Partly the more advanced arrows and pointers to help Nancy get around. Partly that the mystery itself, and Nancy's plan to solve it, isn't always clear. The player has to work through it a bit and wander. There is not a lot of "pixel hunting," but there are a lot of mental challenges. Not as much learning as Royal Tower or Scarlet Hand, but just enough to help Nancy with a few puzzles. Nancy does get to do some fun things, such as ordering and eating French food at a caf
