Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro Joystick Review

Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro Joystick
Average Reviews:

After having tested several joysticks, this is the one I kept coming back to.I've had a version of this joystick on my system for two years, and have yet to find anything better.I don't at all agree with the ......editorial review that says it's got stiff joystick movement.Quite to thecontrary, it's capable of very subtle movement.
Plus, it's got lots offeatures without being over-engineered. I especially like the fact that itcomes with both throttle and rudder control within easy reach. The buttoncluster on the stick itself is very sensibly designed, with all majorbuttons a comfortable distance apart. The hat is cleverly devised as well, being both solid and flexible. Most importantly, perhaps, the software, now at least two years old, is very stable, and allows you complete controlover each button.
Yet, there are some people who might not find thisproduct enjoyable. As others have commented, it is a veryright-hand-centric design.Since there are a host of buttons on theleft-hand side of the base, you can't hold the joystick in your left handand access those buttons without crossing your hands. Also, the cluster ofbuttons on the joystick itself are designed to fit the right hand. Ifyou're a right-handed person, this design is ergonomically perfect.Itliterally fits in the palm of your (right) hand. But a left-handed personhas no business whatever buying this product.
Neither does a Mac owner. This product's USB connectivity, though convenient to Windows users, doesnot extend to the Mac.That's an unfortunate oversight that, one suspects, wouldn't be all that difficult to correct.
Still, if you only intend touse this thing on a Windows machine, and if you're right handed, you'd behard-pressed to find a better joystick.

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations Review

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations

I am actually reviewing the whole Phoenix Wright series here. My son loves these games and I have to say they are the most involved and interesting games I've seen yet. He'll spend hours going over 'cases' and has even gone online to research law. It's sparked his interest in having a career in the criminal justice field as well. I can hear him saying "object" into the mic on the DS sometimes! I've taken a look at the game myself and really think the graphics are sharp and characters well developed. He'll also listen to just the music sometimesas well. If your child is interested in law, or if you want something more than the usual video game, this may be it. Very clever and I think it's a great mind-expander!

F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon Review

F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
FEAR is one of the best FPSs I have played in a while on any system. To start, the game play in FEAR is fast, furious, and most importantly fun.FEAR is an extremely fast paced game. There is constant stream of surprisingly intelligent enemies putting up their best efforts to kill you.And if it was not for the extremely useful slo-mo feature, they would succeed much more often than not.Slo-mo may seem so 1999 but the fact still remains that it is freakin cool in this game.Slow motion enables the player to move at roughly 2x the speed of the enemies, thus gaining an extremely useful edge in combat, or even retreat.

Also in you arsenal are a series of perfectly designed weapons.Every single weapon has its place throughout the game; all the way from the pistol to the rocket launcher. This is not DOOM where you start at the guns with the highest number on the number pad.Every weapon is balanced perfectly and has positives and negatives so there is no super weapon. And following along with the somewhat realist aspect of Halo the player can only hold 3 guns plus an assortment of grenades (proximity, frag, and remote).

Also HALO like is the close quarters combat. The player can bludgeon with the but of a weapon, do a spin attack, a jump attack and a diving attack. All of these attacks so some significant damage. However these moves are more suited towards multiplayer combat as opposed to single player where the tactics are more suited towards staying back and picking the enemies off.

FEAR is also one freaky game. And this is coming from one who sees horror movies and haunted houses as more as jokes. There were multiple times i just went oh @&^$! and jittered a bit.The horror aspects in this game are superbly implemented both through freighting visuals and terrifying audio.

Now to FEARs weakest point: level design. This is where the FEAR team should have taken some lessons from the beautifully laid out corridors of Half Life 2. The levels in FEAR just seem so bland and repetitive.I see the same objects, color palette, and walls all throughout the game (the parking garage segment is a welcome exclusion though).Where the masterfully designed levels of Half Life seem like living and breathing places with realistically places objects, FEAR just seems like a concrete maze with some computers and windows thrown in for good measure. The levels in FEAR just do not seem real.I the middle of a underground bunker there is placed a lone cubicle with a phone and a computer. (???) This seems so fake.Another game that exemplifies excellent level design is SWAT4.There are random, everyday objects placed throughout the levels to make them seem more real; magazines, soda can, papers, all kinds of everyday stuff that goes unnoticed.

Now on to the beautiful, but taxing graphics of FEAR.This is one good looking game, if you have the right system.Yeah, you can run this game on low setting, but it looks horrible.Even on my GeForce 6800 Ultra I can usually only run safely on medium settings. And the time demo used to test settings is completely inaccurate compared to real game play. But with everything turned on high this game looks STUNNING.However, for most it will be a stunning slide show on the majority of computers.

The multiplayer composed of FEAR is a nice addition, but is not the main focus of the game.Once again the poor level design comes into play here and on most maps is seems as if you are a bunch of rats fighting in a maze. The map featured in the multi player demo is one of my favorite maps due to its uniqueness. The slow motion in multiplayer is also integrated very nicely with one person, or team holding the slow motion activator that slowly recharges.

Overall, download both the single and multi player FEAR demos to get a taste of what to expect. In general the full game follows the demo experience pretty closely (the full game is hella more scary though and even has some performance enhancements) FEAR is not a HALO or Half Life 2 killer but it is pretty close up there,it is defiantly a game worth buying. The Directors edition even has some insightful extras. It some good stuff.Just go get it.

Fight Night Round 2 Review

Fight Night Round 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved Fight Night 2004. It was the best boxing game I'd ever played, with a rock-solid control scheme and very good graphics and sounds. The game was easy to learn and highly addictive.

With this direct sequel, several things have been improved over the already great original game. In this title, you take control of one of dozens of boxers or create your own and play exhibition fights, knockout contests, or the career mode. In the latter, you earn money and improve your stats and buy loads of ring gear along the way.

First things first: The career mode, while fun and at a decent length (about 40-90 fights and 20 hours long, depending on your performances), is deeper than the first game though not greatly. For example, this time your character starts in the amateur ranks and moves up to the professionals at either 10 fights or earlier if you choose. Your performance in the ring begins to deteriorate at around 40 years of age, and you can retire anytime while also trying to win the dozen or so trophies available. There's still training in between fights, except this time you choose between the three types and they cover a much broader area of skills so you can truly orient your fighter's abilities how you choose. The training seems much easier this time as well, though they weren't very difficult last time.

But the problem with the career mode is that it still doesn't go much deeper than this. It's interesting and more personally involving (details of your boxer's progress scroll under their portrait during the fight menu), but there's still not too much besides the amount of fights to differentiate it from the "play now" mode. While I wasn't expecting something as deep as some of the story path options from some wrestling games, I would have liked to see things such as choosing promoters, offers of switching to different leagues, throwing a fight, etc. While those are all real aspects of boxing, some would argue that it's unnecessary to what this game was trying to achieve, which was to recreate a solid boxing experience. And it definitely did despite my hopes for a little more variation. The career mode is also like last year's game in that you'll fight a lot of randomized fictional boxers. While I like this and think it's interesting and realistic, there does seem to be little interaction with real-life champs. Again, that's where I would have liked a deeper sort of option set for this mode. The game does get points however for offering extras here and there such as charity fights and the option to switch weight classes and unify belts, and choosing your fights offers a strategy of sorts since each one will have different preparation periods that will factor in to how long your boxer's overall career can last. Things such as half a dozen new and interesting venues spice things up along the way too. One last quibble: Missing is the end-of year wrapup, so no end of year awards (such as fighter of the year) and no list or retiring boxers. No way to see a boxer's fight history either, which were features that made the game, and boxing in general, more interesting).

There are lots of more important improvements, however. The street-style announcer of last year's game has been replaced with professional commentator Joe Tessitore, who can always be found on ESPN2's Tuesday Night Fights. His dialog is lively, descriptive, pretty much constant and almost always parallel to what's going on in the ring. He sounds completely believable and well acted to boot. While I personally didn't have a problem with "Tigger" in last year's game, there's a definite difference to hearing someone say "Oowee, there goes two peas and a biscuit, that had to hurt!" as opposed to "Kid Dynamite looks like he's got something to prove tonight with that aggressive right hand. I'm surprised Ali was able to get back up so quickly". The commentary is very professional and, as I said, manages to keep up with the action with little if any delay.

Another improvement is the create a boxer mode. The basics are still here such as hieght and color and so forth, but while you still can't pick from a variety of facial features, you can more precisely tweak them. Last year's game let you decide some shapes and depths for some facial parts, but this time you can do more deep altering of the head shape, jawline, eye height, cheekbone size, forehead size, and some things like that. While you still probably can't make a perfect you, you'll probably come closer. I did, with a few new options and better facial range, but I still wished for some more selection. There's some nice additions for things such as hair, but a couple things (like a full beard) are strangely missing this time.

There's another interesting feature, the cornerman control. Between rounds, you (slowly) move the right stick up and down to reduce the numerical swelling and cut indicator for your boxer. To me this seemed realistic and gave the fight a more strategic angle and also gave a clear indication of how much a fighter has been beaten down. Too much and the fight can actually be stopped, so this is important. The cool thing is, both the cutman option and fight stoppage can be turned off if you like.

Another detail is the award system. This time, everything you unlock (through easy sparring as well as won belts and contests) stays in your character profile which is shared between your boxers. If you unlock stuff and end a career, your next boxer can use that stuff too once he has the cash (no unlocking). One thing I found strange is that now most of the items carry a skill boost (such as in Fable, where this glove may give you +3 power but this one gives you +3 speed). Since everyone chooses ring gear based on style, this is odd and throws sort of unwelcome strategy into what should be picking an outfit based purely on your color and style needs. But, you can also just dress how you want and just accept any bonus as extra gravy. You'll just feel the NEED to give yourself the best bonuses, which I feel gets in the way. Lots of great (and much more complex) styles and color combos though.

Finally, the controls. Last year I only bought the game once I learned that I didn't HAVE to use the right stick to control my punches. I grew up on the control pad and I hate forced analog. I'm happy that I can still use the buttons to punch this time too. However you must use at least one stick, for either moving or punching, since there are so many commands. This bugged me at first until I realized how smoothly and easily I moved with the left stick, and I actually punched with the right stick anyway once in a while because it too was pretty easy. I've heard that the game sort of favors use of the stick for punching, but for those of you like me who prefer the buttons, don't worry. A couple things are easier with the stick, and vicious haymakers seem possible only with it, but I assure you that I still had no problem finishing a career (in easy mode) with a 54-0-0 record using the buttons almost exclusively. The right stick can make it easier sometimes, but I found button combos still easy and satisfying without.

One last thing- if you hated the music last time, this time it's even more irritating. If you liked it, then have fun.

So there you go. All said, I think this is a solid game, worthy on its own and improved enough over the original to warrant a purchase. Improved, but not too different. If you liked the first, I can't see why you wouldn't like this one too. If you're new to the game, this one's a more complete and professional package. But if you aren't satisfied with improved and want a whole new game that's nothing like Fight Night 04, rent it first. I did, but then I knew I had to go buy it right away.

Dragon Age: Origins Review

Dragon Age: Origins

Here we go again... Bioware releases another game and I lose another 100+ hours of my life to gaming. After 11 hours of play (completing 8% of the story) I thought I'd share a few thoughts in case you're considering purchasing this game.

What's good:

Bioware RPG's always have great stories with deep background and entertaining character interactions. This one does not disappoint.New for this game are multiple character opening stories-- hence the "origins" in the title.Depending on your class and race, you experience an extended opening that really sets the stage for your character and gives you something to think about. The opening for the mage included two quests to play through and a several difficult decisions to make before it merged with the main story line.

Voice acting is excellent, graphics are good and 1080p (though nothing like Metal Gear Solid or GTA4).Combat is fast, furious, and just a little out of control-- and exciting.

What's bad:

I had hoped to see the next generation of RPG, but the game's architecture feels like reused modules from other Bioware games.Character gen is from Mass Effect, 3rd person view and movement from KOTOR, inventory mechanics and interface much like Baldur's Gate. It's all competently designed, but feels a little worn. But maybe Bioware is suffering from Pixar Syndrome - if it doesn't outdo itself with each new release it seems plain.

My only real complaint is that character attributes and abilities are not sufficiently explained. The small paper manual says things are explained in detail in the in-game help but that is not the case.

Lastly:

Be aware that this game isn't suitable for kids. It's a mature game with some disturbing subject matter-- that's why Bioware calls it a "dark fantasy."Kudos to Bioware for aiming for a serious game, but know what you're buying before putting it on the holiday gift list for your little ones.(Wait until after they're in bed and have an epic time playing it yourself!)

Gameplay
Dragon Age: Origins is a 3D oriented RPG based in a dark, heroic, fantasy realm where moral choices have a lasting impression on the peopleyou meet, the members of your own party and the world around you. Theinclusion of subtitle "Origins" in the game's title refers to the sixunique origin stories available to new heroes as a new game begins. Eachof these has an impact on the player's motivations and his or her experience, and renders a unique prelude, path, and possible ending(s) to the game. There are many different endings to the game based on the origin storyof the character and the choices you make as you play through the game. The game features three character classes--warrior, mage, and rogue--andthree races of being--Human, Elf or Dwarf--that can assume these classes.Although most game elements, such as weapons, magic, etc., are availableto any character, each class and race has different strengths, abilitiesand affinities which lend themselves to better utilizing different elements.

Dragon Age: Origins is a single player game based on party-basedgameplay and combat where the player can join, control and quest withup to three non-player characters (NPC). Players can also quest aloneif they so choose, but with the chance of survival are slim. ConvincingNPCs to join you, and treating them well may be necessary depending onthe varying sentiments between the player and the NPC, or between theNPC's in the party based on the chosen history written into the originstory accepted at the beginning of the game. This uncertainty allows fora variety of possible dynamics within the party ranging from open hostility, all the way to romance. The game progresses in real-time via a pause-and-playtactical combat system that allows the player to check inventory levels, equip a character, etc. in a slight vacuum. Additional features foundin the game include: a combination of a standard loot system and a currencysystem based on gold silver and copper; advanced character customizationfunctionality; the use of poison, traps and herbalism; dual-wielding skills;and "spell combos," which allow players to chain together different spellsto create a unique effects.

Company of Heroes Review

Company of Heroes
Average Reviews:

This game is brilliant.

First a little history. I am a 43 year old gamer (and bad speller)who has been around since pong. I have gone the route of Pong, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, Atari ST and then the PC since the 386. Other than FPS (just not my thing, plus I suck) I have played all the different type of games many many times.

Even though these are my initial impressions of the game so far this is easily the most fun I personally have had with a RTS game since Total Annihilation. I have played the Age of Empires, Warcrafts, Starcraft, Rise of Nations, Dawn of War etc etc. All these games were different yet they had the same "feel" about them. COH feels new and that is something that the RTS genre really needed. The bar has been raised to a staggering height.

Why do I enjoy COH over these other RTS games.

1. Strategy: Flanking, Machine guns covering arcs, armor facing, etc. COH has real strategies that make you think instead of how fast you can click around the battlefield(more on this later). The battlefield is destructible which also adds a level of strategy. The brick wall that feeds enemy troops towards a choke point is great until that tank rolls through it giving the enemy another point of access. Wait until you come back to a great defensive point while you were busy at another area and see off-board artillery devistate your position.

2. Atmosphere: The atmosphere in COH's is awesome. The voices (warning crude language), graphics, etc. Every little detail is done to a new level of perfection.

3. A.I.: The A.I. is very good. Your troops will find cover if possible (unlike the report from a previous reviewer). If you have mortar teams back and a rifle company come upon enemy units they will automatically start bombarding that location. the computer player on normal is a very tough opponent for someone at my level in the skirmish mode (I have yet to bet him).

4. Resources: Resources are done like Relics pervious game Dawn of War with a added level of complexity. You have to take over points on the battlefield which will supply you with one of the three types of resources required. What is different is that each point is in a sector and these sectors must be joined back to your base (by being adjacent to another friendly sector). It is possible to lose a sector which will isolate some of your other sectors and their resource income. This adds even more strategy to the game.

5. Map: The map in the game is outstanding. It shows the sectors your troop locations with a symbol what they are, if they are pinned, suppressed, in combat. A excellent way to have a snapshot of what is happening.

Is this game perfect no but what is. Although some might find this game easy I (like most) find it very hard. Even with the advance A.I. I always feel like I am out of control and need to be at 20 places at once. The good thing is that you can pause the game, go through your troops giving them orders, gather your wits and then let all hell break loose again. I have not played online but at my speed I would probably get massacred. Even tough I think the language fits the game perfectly I agree with some that you should have the option of turning it off if you have kids around. I was also underwelmed with the first mission of storming the beach. I know they were trying to ease you into the game but i think they missed the marked and was more confused after the mission than I was before I started.

I highly recommend that you purchase this game, support Relic as they deserve it. Give yourself a treat pick up Company of Heroes.

Stronghold: Crusader Review

Anyone who likes real-time strategy (Starcraft, Age of Empires) will love this game too.Especially if you were the kind of defensive player who enjoyed putting up walls and towers more than mobile armies (although both have a role in Crusader).
The economy is significantly more complex than most of the previous games in this genre, so it will take some practice to get good enough at building a stable economy that you can concentrate on warfare.(E.g. training crossbowmen requires: you are popular enough to have free peasants; you have crossbows, and leather armor; having weapons requires an armory to store them; crossbows require someone to make them, who in turn needs wood from woodcutters; leather armor requires a tanner, who needs to get cows from a dairy farm.Any one of these links can be broken, especially during warfare, and suddenly you can no longer make more crossbowmen.)
Compared to their first release (Stronghold), the minor tweaks have improved the game.A mercenary camp lets you build an army at the beginning, instead of waiting until the midgame.Trees andpotential farmland are now limited to an oasis (this being the middle east instead of England), which has the effect that there are now resources to fight over from the very beginning.
But don't just take my word for it.Firefly/GOD offers a free demo (of both Stronghold and Crusader) with a few very playable, very fun levels.Get the demo and try it out!You can decide yourself whether you like the gameplay enough to purchase it.

Pharaoh Review

Pharaoh
Average Reviews:

Where, oh where to begin?I dug Caesar III to the point where it caused me to lose sleep and affect my health.Being a huge fan of Egyptian history, I was salivating for months while Impressions developedPharaoh.
I was not disappointed. The graphics, while not your latest3D-Accelerated Zing-Boom flavor, are slick and very nice to look at.Thegameplay is all we remember from the Citybuilding series, plus a bunch ofnew surprises. There are many differences in the way you build a Romancity vs. an Egyptian city, and it's refreshing to see that Pharaoh goes foraccuracy in the little details. This is a detail-oriented game, after all. Floodplain farming, the lack of groundwater in the desert and monumentbuilding are some of the interesting differences between Pharaoh and CaesarIII.Management of religion is improved somewhat, though I still findmyself constructing "temple row" somewhere out of the way just tomake sure all the gods are equally appeased.
The biggest stumbling block, ironically, is also Pharaoh's greatest triumph: the accurate and detailedprocess it takes to build monuments. You don't just say "Oh, I wannabuild a pyramid" and plunk it down. No, first you must build theinfrastructure; guilds must cut and lay stone, peasants must prepare thebuild site and haul stone.Carpenters must build ramps, etc etc.Theprocess of building a pyramid is excellent, and most fun to watch... whenit goes as planned.
Unfortunately, the damn things take FOREVER to build! You may have met all your victory requirements for a given mission fourhours previous, but you're stuck waiting for that Pyramid to build. Sometimes carpenters just don't come build the ramps, and your stonehaulers are left stacked up waiting to deposit their loads (that stuff getsheavy after a few months!).
Game lengths aside, Pharaoh is as fun andaddicting as any strategy game I've played, and the city-building style isalways a refreshing change from the "Gather>Build Units>DestroyEnemy" formula that most RTS games employ. In Pharaoh, if you don'tmake your city work, or plan, or listen to your people, you'll be oneunhappy city manager.
This game rocks

Command and Conquer the First Decade Review

Command and Conquer the First Decade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Command and Conquer series is just incredible. Some of the first walkthroughs I wrote were for the original Command and Conquer series.

These games began coming out in 1995, and it's just amazing how fun they still are to play - and how quickly I remember the missions. They really were a ton of fun. They were great strategy, the plotline was great, and the graphics were very impressive for the time.

Sure, in modern times we might chuckle at the white-square grenade being "lobbed", but after a few minutes you get right into the spirit of things. You run over the enemy troops with your harvester, you go after that base, you build your barracks and are sucked in for hours.

I do have all the original games - but half of them won't run on modern computers! With this set you get the full set of games, all of them run quite nicely, and they are all just as good if not better as far as graphics go.

If you haven't played any of these games, you really have to get this set. These are true gaming classics that are incredibly fun to play. If you HAVE played these in the past, then you owe it to yourself to buy this set so that you can play them on your current system. The price is amazingly cheap for the number of games you are getting.

Highly, highly recommended - a must have for anyone who enjoys strategy gaming.

In 1995, a young game studio named Westwood released one of the first real-time strategy games. They had created the genre a few years earlier, but this title took the fledgling genre to new heights with impressive graphics, revolutionary gameplay features and an enthralling story told through the then-young art of full motion video. After twelve successful games spread out over ten years, the venerable Command & Conquer franchise has become synonymous with the real-time strategy genre it popularized, and the entire series is now available on one disc in Command & Conquer The First Decade.

Command & Conquer the First Decade collects the entire Command and Conquer library on one disc.

Red Alert offers mixes vintage World War 2 vehicles with some distinctly modern touches. View larger.

Tiberian Sun updates the classic Command and Conquer game, continuing the storyline with improved gameplay and graphics. View larger.
Battle the old-fashioned way with the original Command & Conquer, watch an alternate World War II unfold in Command & Conquer Red Alert or control the modern warfield in Command & Conquer Generals--all three of Command & Conquer's worlds are open to nostalgic gamers and modern aficionados alike.

Tiberian Dawn
Old friends await the seasoned gamer in the original Command & Conquer universe, as the fanatical Brotherhood of Nod battles the Global Defense Initiative in a war over the mineral Tiberium.Whether playing as the Brotherhood and obeying the charismatic Kane's every command or taking control of GDI forces as they seek to save the world from Kane's ambition, every detail of Command & Conquer is just as you remember it.The original full motion videos tell the story in what was once cutting-edge and is now quaint, and the gameplay is simple as can be.Gather Tiberium to produce tanks, infantry and more to decide the fate of the world, or try to connect to others with one of the first online game-finding services!

Bring the original storyline to a close in Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun, and determine the fate of the world--or, if you want a break from the strategy formula, take control of a GDI Commando in the recent Command & Conquer Renegade, a first person shooting game set in the Tiberium universe.See the world of C&C up close and personal from Nick "Havoc" Parker's point of view as he fights a one-man war against the forces of Nod armed with a diverse arsenal of weapons and one-liners.

Engage in heated battles over nameless fields and familiar territory alike in your struggle to save the world. View larger.
The Red Menace
Perhaps the most popular game of the franchise, Command & Conquer Red Alert asks the question, "What if Albert Einstein mastered time travel, then used it to go back in time and kill Hitler?"The answer is a world at war not with Nazi-led Germany, but the rapidly expanding Soviet Union under Stalin's iron fist.Dip into the world of historical fiction as the Allied forces take on the Soviet bloc in a war fought not just by soldiers, planes and tanks, but by time travelers, psychics and giant tesla coils. This more refined and advanced real time strategy game features gameplay innovations that greatly influenced the games that followed, including building queues and other convenient options, providing a nice balance between nostalgia and playability.

A World at War
While Command & Conquer takes place in the future and Red Alert in the past, Command & Conquer Generals offers its version of the present, as the United States, China and a terrorist group known as GLA battle all over the world. The most game-oriented of the series, Generals contains no FMV like its predecessors, concentrating instead on pure 3D gameplay as well as the wry humor that peppered the previous games.

In all, Command & Conquer The First Decade contains not only the games that defined a genre, but the history of that genre.Players can experience the evolution of the real-time strategy game as they play each game in sequence, and see for themselves how far the technology has come since 1995--but also find out that the old games still have some life left in them.
