Commodore 64 Computer Video Game System Review

Commodore 64 Computer Video Game System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had a Commodore 64 for about 11 years from 1986-1997. I had 2 different types, both the original keyboard style pictured here and a slimmer style that was a lighter shade of beige. This is what I learned to type, program and play games on. In my opinion it had the best graphics out of any computer system until the Pentium processors came out. The sprite graphics were much better looking than other comparable systems like the IBM-PC , Apple II and Tandy computers.

The entire computer system is inside the keyboard and it connects to a TV or monitor. The system boots up in 2-3 seconds and loading a game takes an average of around a minute from a floppy disk. Cartridge games load almost instantly, but programs saved to tape take 2-10 minutes, depending on where they are saved on the tape.

This is still my favorite computer system out of everything I have used, and the standard I use to evaluate new systems. My new PC may have better networking and graphics capabilities, but nothing compares to writing your own adventure game out of the back of Run Magazine and then adding your own tweaks or levels for maximum replay value. This is the computer I would use today if I could figure out how to solder an IDE connector and ethernet jack onto my old system.

Shadow Complex Review

Shadow Complex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Shadow Complex sets a new bar for quality in an XBLA game. It's a side scrolling action game in the style of retro classics like Metroid and Castlevania, where exploration, hidden rooms, and power-ups all play large rolls as you progress through the game. But while the game is presented in 2 dimensions, the visuals are all beautifully rendered in 3D using the same Unreal engine seen in games like Mass Effect and Gears of War.The end result is a near perfect blend of both the old and new, and a game that feels both familiar and fresh at the same time.

Shadow Complex takes about 5-10 hours to complete, depending on how thorough you're going to be exploring the game and searching for power-ups, and is purely a single player experience. While I might usually find that a bit on the short side for a retail game, for a $15 arcade game it's just about right.Shadow Complex is easily one of my top 5 games on XBLA.I would recommend this game to just about anyone.

Update: After spending a bit more time in this game, I thought I'd expand a bit on my initial review.A lot of people have called this a "Metroid-vania" game, but really it's just Metroid. The game borrows heavily from Super Metroid, and there are more than a few weapons and power-ups that have direct analogs in the SNES classic.I don't really consider that a bad thing though. As the saying goes, if you're going to steal, steal from the best. And while Shadow Complex may not really expand on the formula laid out in Super Metroid, it refines it and polishes it to near perfection.Simply put, if you liked Super Metroid, you'll love Shadow Complex.

Make no mistake: this game is HARD.Not at first, though. It eases you into it, making you think it's gonna be a breeze, but then they ramp up the difficulty and 'splode timing. If you like old school platforming games, this one is not to be missed. The only difference here is the frustration factor present in most of the older games is missing here.It is just pure fun.40% platformer, 40% puzzle game, 20% time trial racer = 100% awesome.

Robotech: Battlecry Review

Robotech: Battlecry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a long-time Macross/Robotech/anime-in-general fan I've been waiting for a game like this for a long time and it's finally here. After the disappointing cancellations of the US releases of Macross VFX 1 and 2 I thought I'd never get my chance to fly a Veritech. So after seeing the limited edition release of this
game I decided to give it a try and it has not dissapointed.
Fans of the series will relish the fact that TDK has created a storyline that is original but at the same time allows you to experience some of the events seen in the TV episodes. Another welcome feature is the return of the voice actors for Roy, Rick, Lisa, and Mynmei to reprise their roles (as well as Max's actor, although he's playing the lead role Jack Archer). Hearing Lisa's voice telling me to go rip it up with the Zentraedi made me feel like a kid again.
But it's not just fanboy appeal that makes this a great game. The cel-shaded graphics look awesome and really enhance the anime atmosphere. Dogfights and ground combat are amazing, with dozens of friendlies and Zentraedi (and scads of missiles) making for a lot of furious and jaw-dropping furballs. The controls are also great and make the transformations into the three modes easy and seamless.
The game is not without faults however. The missions are very creative in design, variety, and execution but can sometimes be frustratingly confusing when it comes to knowing where to go or what to do to complete them successfully. The escort/defense and occasional rescue missions can be maddening as well. And as I said the controls are great but the Guardian and especially the Battloid mode don't really give you the sense of moving in 3-D especially with the camera angle generally staying behind your Veritech and therefore not allowing you to see targets almost directly below or above you (even though you have the gun aimed and firing at them).
Both of these problems - and a few more niggling ones which I'll omit for brevity - are more than outweighed by the overall quality of this game. Admittedly it will most likely appeal to fans, but license aside it's still a great action game that will appeal even to gamers with no knowledge of the anime.
On a side note: True fanboys might be interested in the limited edition version which is exactly the same game but has a bunch of nice swag (such as a soundtrack CD and t-shirt) packaged with it.

Portal: Still Alive Review

Portal: Still Alive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Portal has won many awards since its launch in 2007, and when you play it, you'll agree that it deserves them. It's ingenious and compelling, a masterpiece easily at home in an all-time greatest games hall of fame list.

Despite many recommendations from friends, I initially avoided getting this game for two reasons.Don't make this mistake! It's a fantastic game, and neither of my concerns proved to be important.

First, I thought Portal was a first-person shooter (FPS), and I don't like FPSs or games requiring lightning fast reflexes, so I almost skipped it.Portal was originally released as part of "The Orange Box".The Orange Box was a disc-based game for Windows, Xbox 360, and PS3 which bundled 5 games in 1.The other 4 games in the bundle were well-known FPSs which had been released previously (Half Life 2, 2 add-ons for Half Life 2, and Team Fortress 2).In that company, one might assume that the 5th game in the bundle, Portal, was also an FPS.In fact, Portal is not an FPS at all, but a first-person 3D puzzle game, and one of the most original and ingenious puzzle games in years. Each level introduces you to new game elements and increasingly difficult puzzles, with many wonderful "aha!" moments.Fast reflexes aren't required, but brains definitely are.Others might assume that, as the "fifth wheel" in The Orange Box bundle, Portal would be a give-away title not worth trying to sell or advertise.Nothing could be further from the truth.Despite the obvious success of Half Life 2, many game players and critics alike would argue that Portal is the strongest game in The Orange Box bundle.

Once I knew I wanted to try Portal, I again delayed my purchase because I wasn't sure which version to get.Should I get "The Orange Box", which costs more, comes on disc, and contains 4 FPSs that I probably won't play?Or should I get "Portal: Still Alive", which costs less, is downloadable, and comes with a few extra puzzles but no bundled games? The answer is:it doesn't matter, either choice is great, and it's up to personal preference. If you also like FPSs, The Orange Box is definitely a great value.I personally prefer not having to keep a disc in the drive, and will gladly take even a small amount of extra puzzling content over an FPS, so this downloadable version was best for me.See my comment on this article for a detailed list of differences between the two versions.Regardless, don't let indecision about the platform/version hold you back, like it did me.You can't go wrong with either one!

Now, I want to briefly describe the game and what makes it great. The premise and basis of all the puzzles is that there is a new technology that allows you to open "portals" between virtually any two flat surfaces.Imagine opening a magic door that connected the wall in front of you with the wall behind you -- you could look through this door and see your own backside. Now what if you opened a magic portal connection between the floor and ceiling -- and stepped through. Now what if you open a portal connection between walls at different angles and jump through -- your momentum will carry through but gravity will shift your ballistic trajectory. The possibilities are endless and mind-boggling.Fortunately, the game eases you into the concept, along with other game elements, and by the end you're an expert, ready for the major challenges ahead.(Once you solved the game, try looking at online videos of pros playing the game; you'll be blown away by what experts can do with portals.)

But the other great thing, which isn't common for puzzle games, is the understated but excellent plot and backstory.Throughout the levels, you get a few hints that something bigger is going on here, and that maybe beating the levels shouldn't be your first priority.I'll avoid spoiling it and leave it at that. But I can't help but mention the superb cherry on top, which is a very gratifying end credits scene with a catchy original song, which you'll probably want to view/listen to over and over again. You can find this song and its lyrics online (and in games like Rock Band 2), but they won't make sense or carry any emotional weight until you've solved Portal.I'm also told the plot ties in with the larger Half Life universe, but as I don't like first-person shooters, I didn't catch those references.

I can't recommend this game highly enough. If you haven't played it yet, run, don't walk, to enjoy this treasure.

Trials HD Review

Trials HD
Average Reviews:

This game starts out pretty innocent.Totally awesome graphics, effects, controls, and just plain fun.Pretty soon though, it gets very hard. About midway through the Medium levels, you realize how hard this game is, and once you get midway through hard you may just throw your controller. WAIT - don't!While this game is hard, it is very easy to practice over and over. By pressing the B button, you are instantly put back on two wheels at the last check point. (Or press Select to start the level over). You could knock down over 50 attempts in about a minute or two until you get it right, and then the next checkpoint is just over that bump. Still wanna throw your controller? WAIT - don't!This game turns out to be all about the rear wheel. If you can master when to apply your rear wheel to the ground, you will have a much easier time getting through the levels... still hard, but easier. You can't accelerate if your rear wheel is off the ground, so the longer your rear wheel is on the ground the faster you'll go!

After you pass some of the harder levels, press Y to see the leaderboards, and then check out the replays from the #1 slots. Keep a close eye on the rear wheel action, I've learned a lot by watching what others do.

Another tip: Leaning one way then the other can result in some serious instabillity (true to physics) so be careful not to overcompensate!

1-19-2010 EDIT:I'm still totally addicted to this game, so here is another tip. Learn to "bunny hop" for those Hard and Extreme levels. If you accelerate while leaning back, then quickly lean forward, you can hop up on things easier.I find the Hard levels totally manageable now (still no Gold medals), and I've beat all the Extreme tracks... once I figured out the bunny hop.

DLC (BIG Track Pack) also available now, and totally worth the measly $5.

Yakuza 2 Review

Yakuza 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When Sega's Yakuza for the PS2 finally came stateside a while back, it offered up a decently entertaining brawler at best that just didn't do too much to seperate itself from the rest of the pack.Yakuza 2 thankfully, and surprisingly, improves on much of what the first game offered in terms of gameplay, graphics, and story; and is a pretty satisfying brawler that will keep you entertained for some time.Playing once again as Kazuma, you traverse through a nicely detailed Japan, and are still looking to put an end to your days with the mob.The game looks solid for a late-in-life PS2 game, offering up some nicely detailed characters and environments, while gameplay-wise the moments of brawling are easy enough to pick up and get into, and other elements bear more in common with the gameplay of the classic Shenmue. There's a lot of secrets and extras to find and uncover as well, and as a whole, Yakuza 2 will keep you busy for a while at the very least. The game's story is also nicely crafted, and offers up some memorable moments and characters. The only real flaws with Yakuza 2 is that there isn't too much here you haven't seen done before, and while for a PS2 game it looks great, there are some noticeable graphical hiccups.Flaws aside however, Yakuza 2 is a surprisingly good improvement on the first game that ends up being an enjoyable and even more surprisingly immersive experience that PS2 owners should definitely check out.

Kingdom Under Fire The Crusaders Review

Kingdom Under Fire The Crusaders
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought Kingdom Under Fire/Crusaders on October 13, 2004.Overall, I found this game very fun, and very INTENSE.Below is a list of what I didn't enjoy, and what I did enjoy regarding the game.

Negatives:

1. The game needs a bird's eye view without the map. There are four views all together, two on a map (long/close-up), two in melee(mid/close-up).The game would be better if they had a third viewpoint where you could pull back the camera one step further without opening the map to see other units and manipulate them around the screen. This view could look something like a Warcraft/Command and Conquer View. The map does this to some extent, but it can become tedious manipulating the troops on the map on close-up mode. Another option would be the ability to split screens by units, so you could see what more than one of the military units is doing @ once.

2. The voices are pretty cheesy. In the future, phantagram should invest a little bit more in getting better voice actors who don't
sound embarassed to read their lines*
*This could also be viewed positively though

3.The game is lacking a bit in terms of varied gameplay. In the future, it would be ideal if we could customize our own characters, as opposed to choosing one of four templates.Additionally, it would be nice if there could be co-op modes - like in lord of the rings - return of the king or head to head modes outside of xbox live.

Positives:

1.Graphics - This game has amazing graphics that take full advantage of the XBox Platform.

2.The cheesy voices - People who take wars between fictional medieval soldiers and orcs and dark elves too seriously need to get a life. This video game has somewhat of a kill bill/B-movie quality to it, in that there are excessive amounts of blood and gore, bad language, and dark elf females fighting in thongs. The terrible voiceovers are a finishing touch to this sort of craziness.*
*This could also be viewed as a negative

3.Challenging gameplay - This is not the sort of video game which you can start and play the whole way through without ever losing. What I enjoy about it is that as your units/characters get better, you also get better as a video gamer. For example, a newbie couldn't just take your saved game from let's say the 20th mission, and just play as him. He'd die immediately b/c the missions get progressively harder with time, and in order to proceed to further missions, one needs to become a better video gamer.

4.Intense and complex battle sequences/combat.Fighting Melee Combat - Dynasty Warriors/LOTR style, while commanding your units - Command and Conquer/Warcraft style, while taking into account unconventional things such as terrain, sun, weather conditions, etc. all require extreme concentration. To the observer though, your battles will have the same sort of chaos/intensity as the battle scenes in Braveheart, especially as you shift from view to view. It's extremely satisfying to fight hand-to-hand combat with your character against an enemy and to see people dropping to the ground because of your archers, while your cavalry comes from behind and flanks them. That's only an example of three of the many units that you can fight with. This game reinvents the real-time strategy genre, taking elements from Dynasty Warriors, LOTR video game series, Myth, Warcraft, and Command and Conquer, by molding them all into one video game and taking the genre to the next level. This game's very ambitious and it works.

Although the game does have it's flaws, I do not feel that they are overly significant or that they detract too much from the game itself. One can accustom oneself to fighting using the map within a relatively short time, and even though you cannot customize your characters or go coop there are still 4 characters with over 60 missions.

On a scale of 100, I would give the game a 96.Even though it misses a few minute things, it gets the major and main things right. This game has the potential to bring real-time strategy (usually associated with PCs up to this point) to the video game console in the same way that Goldeneye brought first person shooters to the video game console.

I feel that this game will beocme a sleeper hit, and that they will make a really awesome sequel which corrects all of the minor flaws in this version if they take into account people's suggestions.

Monster Hunter Review

Monster Hunter
Average Reviews:

This game is by far one of the best i've played. If you can't take it online, although its still good, you may want to wait. The offline tends to get frustrated and repeating quests over and over again to get money gets boring fast.

Pros:
+ Game works awsome online with no monthly charge
+ Armor changes the way you look as well as character customization, don't expect to find your game twin anytime soon.
+ Awsome quests
+ A large collection of weapons and armor to unleash your deadly rage.
+ Cooking, Fishing, Hunting, an more only add to the experiance.
+ Fights with Wyverns and online bosses like Lao feel epic every time.
+ Multible areas like the valcano or jungle.

Cons:

- No offline multiplayer
- Frustrating offline mode
- 1 star quests offline are boring and are nothing but tutorials that have to be done.
- Can only leave town if your on a quest.
- this game WILL make you hungry when your cooking. Dangit, that well done steak looks good.

Your gamer,
Joshua Kyle Daniel

Earth Defense Force 2017 Review

Earth Defense Force 2017
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's rare that a game gets panned and, upon reading about it, I realize it's the perfect game for me. Earth Defense Force (EDF) 2017 is a bit of a clunker, with unrealistic physics, repetitive enemies, and a terrible vehicle mechanic.Folks accustomed to the first-person smoothness of Halo or the gritty action of Gears of War would most certainly turn up their nose at EDF.

But I loved every single level of it.

You've probably guessed what the plot is: flying saucers invade and deposit hordes of giant ants, spiders, robots, and Godzillas--sorry, "Dino-mechs"--onto the Earth's surface in an attempt to take over the word, Independence Day-style.You are Storm 1, EDF's premiere ground soldier. You and a bunch of your hapless fellow soldiers are tasked with repelling alien invaders several times your size with nothing but handheld weapons.Remember Starship Troopers? It's like that.

With apologies to Winston Churchill: You fight on the seas and oceans, you fight in the air, you defend your planet, whatever the cost may be. You fight on the beaches, you fight on the landing grounds, you fight in the fields and in the streets, you fight in the hills...and you never, ever surrender. From Aliens-style bug hunts in cramped tunnels to bitter Children of Men-style warfare in ruined cities, EDF drops you into every environment imaginable, puts a gun in your hands, points you at a giant monster and asks you to take it on mano-a-giant monstero.

The enemies are glorious to behold. The giant robots are 1950s style automatons reminiscent of the Iron Giant, clunking their way through city streets with gigantic beam weapons, one eye, and weird rope-like limbs. The giant dinosaurs breathe atomic fire and smash through buildings and troops.

And then there are the bugs.Lots and lots and lots of bugs. The giant ants squirt acid or bite, swarming in an erratic pattern just like their tiny brethren. The giant spiders, a combination of tarantula and wolf spider, jump AND spit webs. As if this weren't bad enough, sometimes EDF throws all of these types of enemies at you at once.

The other major part of the game are the weapons. There are intelligent miniguns that track monsters just like in the extended cut of Aliens, bullets that ricochet off of the walls, flame throwers, grenade launchers, sniper rifles, acid sprayers, time release mines, rocket launchers, guided missiles, and of course shotguns. Each has a reload time, although you rarely run out of ammo, and a range and damage, so there's plenty of variety. The more enemies you kill, the more weapons and armor you pick up.There are also vehicles, including tanks, helicopters, hoverbikes, and mechs, but the controls are clunky.

EDF revels in its size.Everything is destructible, from bikes and cars on the street to skyscrapers. And they can all be taken out with one well-placed (or poorly placed) missile. Bugs run up the buildings and attack from above--but if you shoot one of the buildings down, the bugs just float to the ground without a scratch. In fact, there's really no penalty for falling (including blowing up the building you're standing on). I destroyed quite a few buildings and struggled to run out of the falling shadow, only to watch the rubble fall right through Storm 1.

On the other hand, the UFOs that fly overhead are also a destructible part of the scenery. As a result, there's a massive sense of scale as you fire rockets at the giant spaceships floating above you; it's exhilarating to watch one of the UFOs crash to the ground after several well-placed shots. And since the things are so darned big, they often fall on TOP of you.

The AI is dumb as rocks, of course. While there are occasional bosses, this game is mostly about blowing up the entire scenery.Sure, Storm 1 leads the EDF troops once their captain dies. And the dialogue really is hilarious: it's been structured so that they talk in vague terms about the enemy to increase the applicability of spoken phrases. Here's a typical snippet of dialogue:

"Where's the enemy?"
"The enemy is out of range!"
"Are you scared?"
"Shut up!"

This silliness adds up to the perfect B-movie dialogue. Even better, the troops are almost of no help whatsoever and actually a threat--though buildings fall through them, your troops can be hit by friendly fire.I killed off the entire platoon several times when an idiot EDF soldier ran in front of my rocket launcher.

About the only unforgivable flaw is that the game's difficulty levels are widely variable.I beat some levels with ease on hard while others were impossible.Unfortunately, EDF does not count beating a level on hard difficulty as beating it on normal difficulty.Since EDF awards points on Xbox live only upon completing every level on one difficulty, switching back and forth between normal and hard levels meant I ended up with no credit for beating the game at all.

You have to be a certain kind of person to appreciate EDF.If you've ever enjoyed THEM!, Tarantula, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Godzilla, Starship Troopers, Aliens, Independence Day, War of the Worlds, or if you just happen to like blowing things up but suck at games like Gears of War and Halo...then grab your rocket launcher, soldier, because the EDF needs you!

Capcom vs SNK 2 Review

Capcom vs SNK 2

One of the best 2D fighting games ever finally comes to the Playstation 2. Capcom vs. SNK 2 is the sequel to another great fighting game, with more characters, grooves and much more. All the characters from the first game are back plus the addition Rock Howard, Joe Higashi, Haohmaru, Kyosuke, Dan, Eagle, Maki etc. and the evil versions of certain characters ( Evil Ryu, Blood Iori, Shin Akuma and Ultimate Rugal). The graphics are excellent and control is top notch. The backgrounds are 3D and very nice and a few characters make cameo appearances ( The London Stage has Billy Kane from Fatal Fury and Dudley from Street Fighter 3). There are also pre-fight intros with certain characters just before each fight ( Joe vs. Mai, Kim vs. Chang, Hibiki vs. Rolento pus many more). Any who is a fan of the Street Fighter and King Of Fighters series will absolutely love this game. Hopefully when they make Capcom vs. SNK 3 they'll add whole bunch of new characters like Batsu, Roy and Daigo from Rival Schools, Genjuro, Sieger and Basara from Samurai Shodown, Haggar from Final Fight, Andy B., Wolfgang K. from Fatal Fury and a whole lot more.

Digimon World 3 Review

Digimon World 3
Average Reviews:

This is a game is good but has a few flaws. I like this, it is the best Digimon game yet. The game flaw is the YOU CAN ONLY GET EIGHT ROOKIE DIGIMON, so people who like Gabumon will see him but will not get him as a partner. Also every rookie Digimom can change into one another. EX: Argumon can become Metal Garurumon and War Greymon. At the beginning of the game Agumon, Gilamon, and a bear Digimon are chased by a spider like Digimon. For those Digimon fans that don't know who this is. This is really one of DIABOROMON forms that shows up in DIABOROMON STRIKES BACK. This game is full of Digimon that were in Japanese movies that have not come out in the USA. That is a reason I like this game. Also in the game you can Digivolve or DNA Digivolve during Battle. This game is grate but it's hard because you have to go on journeys to battle some or all town leaders, I have not gotten that far yet because I kept fighting strong wild Digimon so when I started the on the Journey for real, my Digimon's levels were at 22 each. Don't do this unless you have a lot of patience that is why I like this. Also at the being of the game you see Argumon but you never see War Greymon, Metal Greymon, or Greymon all Agumon does is run.

Armored Core Nexus Review

Armored Core Nexus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nexus is the latest installment of the Armored Core series, and instead of being an expansion as some AC sequels are, this game has a whole different feel than previous AC games.

Basically in Armored Core, players are pilots of mechanized robots who take mercenary jobs from corporations and governments. In order to succeed in these missions, players must first design their Armored Cores to fit both the mission and their piloting preferences, and Nexus offers a robust lineup, with hundreds of parts from which to make a core.

In addition to simply making a balanced mech, Nexus offers a new "tune-up" feature that allows players to add stats to certain parts(ie more armor for arm parts, or more weight capacity for legs) that adds another dimension to building the perfect mech.

While players can spend hours simply building a mech(and some of us do spend quite a bit of time tweaking), the main part of Nexus is the actual missions. The missions are where players actually pilot their mech and do a specific task that usually involves attacking and destroying rival mechs.

Fortunately, the biggest gripe over the AC series: it's "awkward" controls (though the fan would tend to scoff, it was a valid complaint), is fixed in Nexus. Nexus solves this problem by fully utilizing the analog controls of the Duel Shock and makes controls accessible to both fans and interested players through simple controller options. Personally I love the delicate controls the AC series has, and the tight control Nexus continues when selecting the default controls, but some of my friends who disliked previous AC games because of the controls actually liked playing with the newer controls. The only two problems I had personally with Nexus was the inability to sell off the original parts. Normally I would start customizing my mech immediately by selling most of the stock weapons, but that was not allowed in this game. The second problem I, and many other fans, have is the inability to replay any mission once I have "beaten" the game; instead once the game is beaten, the missions start over, and players have to perform certain ways on specific missions to get to a different branch of missions.

Sound is great as usual, and graphics are polished. Many of the parts look similar to previous AC games, but you should note the stats and try them out in the training mode before assuming they are the same parts.

Granted there is only one difficulty, and it might be a bit too easy for some of us, the balance of the game, as well as the newest feature of Hanger weapons(allowing players to have small backup weapons when they drop their primary weapons) which makes the game much more strategic and in my mind the best improvement in Nexus, and the fact that Nexus has two disks(one being a remake of missions from previous ACs) makes Nexus a great game for both veteran Ravens and interested players who are finally catered to in this release.

A great game.

Brave Fencer Musashi Review

Brave Fencer Musashi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game was SOOO much fun!I don't know why it never became more popular! It's one of my favorites.
A game very much like Zelda, Musashi is a young boy who is summoned to another land to save thekidnapped princess. To do so, he must find parts of the legendary swordLumina and break the spells cast over the five scrolls. Thus, Musashiembarks on a long journey. He strolls around town, shops at the localstores, climbs the nearby mountain, and, of course, has to defeat numerousmeanies.
Besides the obvious role-playing/puzzle solving fun, there isplenty of battle to be done with the enemies, which becomes very excitingwhen you can actually absorb the powers of just about any creature in thegame. There are also lots of little fun perks along the way, such as yourdance contest with one the head of the Leader's Force (how else wouldMusashi fight a girl?)
I would highly recommend this game to anyone whois interested in role-playing/platform combination games, especcially ifyou are a Zelda or Final Fantasy fan. This game is exciting, unpredictable, funny, and it will keep you up all night!

Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires Review

Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires
Average Reviews:

Gameplay - 4/5
As any DW fan will notice, dw6 replaced the old combo system with the new Renbu system. You can essentially mash square and attack forever. They changed it a little from DW6, since now Renbu doesn;'t decrease overtime, and is dependant on weapon level. Also, the numerous Imbueings and Special Attacks you can stick onto a weapon add another level of depth entirely, and I perfer this to random drops any day. The combat styles range from narrow, low-body count motions to wide area base-clearing sweeps, allowing custom officers to be made as anything from a duelist to a master of one against many.

Graphics - 3/5
I noticed right off that the quality of peons had decreased from DW6. The officer quality remains the same. I noticed later that this was to cram more characters into every level. For instance, I struggled to get 500KO in DW5E before any battle ended, but here I average 1200 or so.

Sound - 3/5
I enjoy the empires feature to select your own BGM from almost any song from a previous DW game. However, the horrible Enlgish voices return yet again, making you wish for the Japanese voice option, or making you glad to set voice volume to 0.

Replayability - 3/5
Replayability is the highest of any DW to date for me. Largely due to the initially frustrating fact that officer stats do NOT carry over from one play through to the next. Instead, you get clear points, which can be used to allow carry over of weapons, horses, and starting off with bonus gold or items. Once I played through twice, I found this enhances the raplayability for me. Also, there are numerous pieces of edit officer clothes to unlock by completing missions and playthroughs.

Overall - 4/5
My favorite DW title to date. Best edit officer feature in my opinion. Love it!

FirePower for Microsoft Combat Simulator 3 Review

FirePower for Microsoft Combat Simulator 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know, they (pc gamer, gamespot, etc...) are talking this sim to be something great and in all respects it is but when you compare it with the other great WWII combat sims (IL2)for intance, it does not even come close. The authenic nature of this game is unbeatable in gun sounds and bomb effects but that is about it. If you like to blow stuff up this is the add-on for you considering the original game was a horrible combat flight sim lacking and unfinnished in so many areas it was not funny!

The great thing is you can use the atom bomb in the superfortress which I have yet to find on the CD but really you get four times more of a sim with IL2 with it's expansion packs and user-made levels and you get 10 times more planes to fly and the effects and graphics are even better in some cases as this title. Sure you don't have the bomb cam but if you look at the ground after unloading a 1000 lb bomb from a German JU bomber you will see the aftermath, maybe not as great but acceptible to say the least. Plus there is really a lack of dog fight them that makes IL2 what it is.

In all, I wish they would not try to lift up Microsoft so much because obviously they could not contend with a foriegn developer as the Russian's have them beat this time with IL2 and the expansion packs Ace, Pacific Fighters. B
ut there is hope for WWII flight sim's made in America, wait until Rowan's Battle of Britain II comes out hopefully this April 2005. What I've seen, this sim might just give both of these sims a run for their money. We'll see.

Mega Man ZX: Advent Review

Mega Man ZX: Advent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This highly anticipated game will satisfy Mega Man enthusiasts, but may frustrate those who are new to the Mega Man Zero/ZX series. The factors for this are manifold:

The voice acting in the game is unrefined and it clearly shows that, because of fans railing against Capcom for the preclusion of said voice acting from the original Mega Man ZX, the pressure to get an English voice cast was just too overwhelming. The only redeeming factor in this might be that there actually is some voice acting, period.Good voice acting, though, comes with a heavy price.Grey, the fourteen year-old reploid with no past, sounds like he's well in his prime.Ashe, the fifteen year-old hunter, is reminiscent of Ashelia Dalmasca from Final Fantasy XII, except just not as appealing as Kari Wahlgren's voice role.Characters that might not sound as bad include Aeolus and Vent, who have edifying things to say and don't sound nearly as annoying as Thetis or Model A.

Voice-overs aside, the game is quite intense. The tediously primeval map system from the original ZX is not to be found here.Thank goodness! With more stylus abilities than its predecessor, Mega Man ZX Advent is just as interactive and innovative as The Legend of Zelda:Phantom Hourglass. The difficulty is, however, noteworthy. There are many Pseudoroids with an eclectic variety of abilities that one must memorize in order to choose the correct one to proceed to previously impenetrable areas. The Trans-On (or in the English version, A-Trans) feature may be overwhelming at first, admittedly, and yet the function is facilitated largely by the Profile menu, upon pressing Start and then L.The menu is more complex, and with due reason--14 characters to choose from is no small feat.Capcom has outdone itself this time, and the graphics are stunning.Simply observe the different terrain within one level and you will see what I am referring to.

The background music is its hallmark. There is no better soundtrack to listen to on any Nintendo DS game than to this one. From the classic-Capcom electro beats of Grey's opening stage (the track is called "Destiny") to Ashe's sky-high theme ("Through the Lightning" and "Be One") to the incredibly catchy Vent/Aile Model ZX Megamerge sequence ("Determined Eyes").Which brings up the cinematics of the game.Although it should be noted that Ashe's story has shorter clips, they are still as state-of-the-art as they get, culminating in the Model ZX encounter and transformation sequence.Check out YouTube for these. My favorite is Aile's "Rock On".Capcom can be blamed for a lot things, which include an inept attempt at connecting loose storylines, and the unbearable difficulty of the game itself, but they should also be praised for their innovative graphics, control scheme, and their music!

The basic premise of the game is this. You choose a reploid named Grey, or a human named Ashe, who become the Chosen One for Model A (which reminds one of Axl from the Mega Man X games). You are to protect the world from a serious threat stemming with the same power as your Biometal from reaching its full potential.Prometheus and Pandora are key villains who test your might by pitting you against other "Mega Men" or Chosen Ones, who essentially possess similar powers as yours. If you do not confront the person who is perpetrating this series of events, then war and chaos will befall the reploid and human race, bringing it back to its discordant times dating back to Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero eras.

I won't spoil much more.I hope this will inspire you to purchase the game, and I hope you enjoy it!

Herbert Ortiz
