This is a good little USB network adaptor and works as advertised.

Background: I have a Dell laptop with an internal network card. I travel a lot and use it in hotels and hot spots quite a bit. The signal I was getting on the internal card with its two internal antenna's was weaker then I would like and usually doesn't get a strong enough signal to maintain 54 Mbps speed. I was usually down around 11 Mbps in a hotel room. Sometimes I have had to move to a different room, move to a balcony, or a certain point in the room to get a signal at all. In one hotel room I checked signal right after checking in and I could only get a usable signal near the door holding the computer up near the ceiling. I had to walk around the hotel to find a group of rooms that I thought would work and then coordinate with he front desk on availability and change rooms.

I researched many options, reading reviews, etc. Most other options were more expensive or problematic, including modifying my computer to install an external antenna. I looked at USB cards with the mail plug that plug into the computer without using an extension, pcmcia cards with external antenna's, directional antenna's, etc. Most of the reviews I read were from kids "War Driving" but still shed some light on how well this card works.

What I got: I went with the Alpha because of good reviews I read, and the fact that I can remote locate it using an extension giving more options then one mounted to the computer. The unit looks pretty cheap being plastic. Nothing special. It came with the two antennas. I ordered the two extension cables. One is passive and one is active (active is required for longer extensions).

Functionality/Results: It works well. So far I have not been in a Hotel where I didn't get an 88% or better connection (signal strength) with 85 or 90% link quality or better, and more importantly a link with 54 Mbps speed. I get many more signals too, but that is not what I was looking for in most cases. I have tried it in a dozen or so hotels and played with outside signals a bit. There are a lot of them out there.

The ability to move the antenna 10 to 25 feet away could be useful to get it on a balcony, outside a window, get around a concrete wall, etc. but I haven't had to do that yet with the Alpha. Once in the Bahamas, using the computers internal card, I had to get out on a balcony with a 40 mph wind coming off the ocean that would knock over the laptop if I didn't hold on to it, to get a clear shot to the hotel main building where the router was located. I had to weather the salt spray and either had to hold the computer screen to keep it from swaying so I could see it or hold my wine glass to keep it from tipping over. I needed three hands and it was a tough decision as to which two things to hold. That is when I decided to order this card. I read about folks on sail boats running the Alpha up the mast and getting a signal 4 or 10 miles off shore and putting the unit in a zip-loc bag to keep it out of the elements.

If I had modified my computer for an external antenna, or gotten a pcmcia card with external antenna, I could have run coaxial cable to a remote antenna to get the same position benefits, but the signal losses are large that way and signal cuts in half with every few feet of coax. With this adapter the antenna is run right into the transmitter/receiver and there is no loss, however you still have the ability to remote locate it up high in a room, outside a window, on a balcony, etc. without the loss. You don't get the signal loss from a USB cable, although you do run out of power if run too far. 25 feet with the two supplied cables is plenty for me.

Power: The high power is meaningless and probably a lie. I think they are claiming equivalent radiated power with a good antenna to some poor antenna standard like the antenna's printed on a pcmcia adapter card circuit board or something. Anyway it is not really a 1000mW adapter, but it does work well. The allowable power output is somewhat complicated but is based on radiated power (the combined effect of the transmitter and antenna). Anyway a balance of output power, receiver sensitivity, and selectivity is what is important and this one does a good job. It gets quite warm too only having passive cooling (vents).

Antenna's: Like many folks have reported, the big antenna doesn't seem to work any better for me then the little one. Sometimes it will get a slightly stronger signal and more signals with it, but the link quality (signal to noise ratio) is worse. The little antenna has worked fine in all cases so far and just as well as the big one on comparison.

Software: The software installed easily for me with Windows XP and I have had no problems. The software is between OK to fairly nice. I can still enable my internal card and use it when the signal is strong and I don't want to carry the Alpha. I disable it when using the Alpha.

Works great. Hope it last a long time.

If you are looking for solutions for your home (or work) because of problems with range on your Wifi you might also try one of the homemade paper directional parabolic antenna's that you print off from the internet. They really work and also increase security if positioned properly by directing coverage to within your house and decreasing coverage outside. They work will with this unit too. Requires a router with external antenna(s). You can also put one on the antenna of the Alpha and beam signals between the router and the Alpha. Quite effective. You print out a template from the internet, cutout a couple pieces of paper, cover one with foil or aluminum tape, stick the parabolic template together to the flat sheet to form the shape, and position the unit on the antenna of your router. Just do a search on "DIY windsurfer parabolic WIFI antenna" as Amazon doesn't' allow links. Also watch one of the Vid's on it.

As others have mentioned the product image is not correct. It is a small very short cord with usb on the PC side and a female xbox input on the other. However it works great. The product never makes a claim to come with drivers, consequently it does not come with any. However, for those looking for drivers, here's a tip: google for xbcd or just visit http://www.redcl0ud.com/xbcd.html.Using this cord and XBCD I was even able to get my original XBOX Fanatec Speedster Wheel working on my PC, and even change the axis and button mapping.Lap times in GPL went down already :-)

Saitek P990 Dual Analog Game Pad Review

Saitek P990 Dual Analog Game Pad

This is the new improved version of the p880, which got lots of great reviews on Amazon. I've now played with this for a couple of hours and I'm EXTREMELY happy with it! It is perfect in every way! First, the gamepad is much bigger than the two logitech gamepads they had at circuit city. I like that, cuz my hands are large. The smaller gamepads are like they're made for little kids. Anyway, p990 is also lightweight. It has a cool blue light so you can see the buttons in the dark. It's bright, but it doesn't distract me while I'm playing games. I like the shape of the gamepad and the arrangement of all the buttons and controls. There is nothing to improve, as far as I'm concerned. Everything works great. I like very much that there are 6 buttons on top. This is great for fighting games like Mortal Kombat. There are two buttons on each shoulder. I read that's good for sports games, such as football and basketball. So there's a grand total of 10 buttons. Both of the dual analog joysticks were PERFECTLY calibrated right out of the box. I didn't have to adjust anything. All I did was plug in the joystick in the USB port and turn on my PC. It was automatically detected and installed. Only thing I did was check out the buttons in the joystick control panel to see how they worked and to see everything was perfect. The analog joysticks worked very well in several different 3D driving and flying games I tried. I was satisfied with them. This is great. Now I have both analog & digital control all in one unit. A software CD is included, but I didn't bother trying to use it yet. I also didn't try using the button that's supposed to load configurations for first person shooter games. The right side analog joystick is labeled "mouse look." I guess I'll update this review after I've tried an FPS with this gamepad. I wouldn't hestitate to buy it. It's incredible! It's a million times better than my old gravis gamepad pro.

I purchased this item because I live in the country, 800 feet from the main road.My FIL, who lives right on the road, was recently able to get hi speed internet but the cable company denied me stating it was too far a distance to run the cables.I recently purchased a laptop and was able to pick up a weak signal from my FIL's router so I bought this in hopes of boosting the signal. I immediately went from 1 bar to 3 and sometimes even 4.They are also selling this same adapter with a bigger antenna and I am thinking about trying that one out.I have used this with Vista and XP and it works great with both though I did have to download drivers for Vista off website but it was no big deal.I am a mom of 4 and no computer whiz and searched the internet for the best adapter and a decent price and was a little weary about this but it is working great so far.

Logitech G5 Laser Mouse (Blue/Black) Review

Logitech G5 Laser Mouse
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very nice and well built mouse. As soon as you use it, you can tell that it's very well made. The new surface used on this model is very nice, non slip and does not attract fingerprints, unlike the earlier 6 button version of the G5

The option of changing the weight of the mouse seems gimmicky at first, but as soon as you start to experiment with the weights, you'll see that it's actually quite usefull.

The mouse tracks very well and the on-the-fly DPI changing works flawlessly. Also it glides very nicely which is even more emphasized when using a good mouse pad.

The reason I gave this mouse 4 instead of 5 stars is simply that the shape of the mouse will not suite every gamer. It is an awesome device for anyone using a palm or finger grip on their mouse, but someone (like me) that prefers the claw grip, mainly used in FPS games will find it a bit uncomfortable. You can get used to it though.
Also, the scroll wheel is a bit annoying. It would be better if it was a little wider and didn't have this utterly useless side scrolling function, which makes it a bit awkward to depress it.

All in all this is a great gaming mouse that is worth the money it costs. Every angle of it screams quality.
Just try and take it for a "test drive" before you buy it so you can make sure it's comfortable to you.

Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick (USB) Review

Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick
Average Reviews:

I bought this joystick to use it specifically with MS Flight Simulator 2002 Professional. It gives a more realistic feel than using the keys plus it has good response and many other buttons already preprogrammed for various actions such as trim, throttle, flaps and point of view.
I do not like the response for action or maze games though. If you want to purchase a joystick for general use, I would ask you to choose carefully.
I thought that the joystick base was a little heavier.Sometimes the base goes in the direction I'm moving when doing sudden movements. You need to actually push down firmly while moving the stick to keep the base in place.
The joystick's grip is designed for right-handed users, left handed users may feel it uncomfortable although not impossible to handle.
Make sure to have an available USB port.I connected it to a USB hub and works perfectly there. Also, the package states that the joystick works with games designed for Windows 98 Second Edition or later.I use it with Windows XP Professional.
I hope that my review helps in choosing the best control for you.I took one star out because of the limited use of this joystick.

Finale PrintMusic 2008 Review

Finale PrintMusic 2008
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I upgraded to this product from Finale Songwriter 2005, which I did not use for two years because it had no provision for adjusting within the software the volume of playback to my instrument (a Yamaha Clavinova piano) or the volume of a MIDI recording. Finale product support claimed that there was no need for such a feature since all I had to do was adjust the volume on my MIDI instrument . However, I like to use music editors to play either one part of a duet, or to play the same score in order to help me learn a piece. That is, I want both the editor and myself to play the same instrument at the same time. Unfortunately, the 2005 version of Songwriter played so strongly that I had to turn the piano volume all the way down, in which case I could not hear myself playing. The person I spoke to at Finale product support at that time claimed that none of their products, even their high-end versions costing hundreds of dollars, supported what I wanted. How foolish I thought. So for the last two years I used another editor, called Play Music by Notation Technologies. However, Play Music lacks many of the nice entry features of Finale editors. Also, it tends to crash occasionally. Still, I put up with those shortcomings for the simple reason that Play Music met my requirements for playback.

Just recently I was made to realize that Finale Print Music 2008 supported exactly want I want to do. They do it by including what they call a mixer in the software. The mixer allows for adjustment of the volume of the playback. I am so happy that they did this since in every other way I prefer a Finale editor over Play Music.

I am running the Finale Print Music 2008 software on a Windows XP (Home Edition) and I have not experienced any operational problems. I am very happy with this software.

Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard Review

Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just got the Logitech G15 Gaming keyboard yesterday, and overall I'm impressed by the flexibility and potential it offers. However, don't let the attractive design of the keyboard and the sweet looking LCD screen you see in the pictures fool you. The real draw of the G15 can all be found on the left side of the keyboard.

The best feature of this keyboard really isn't the LCD display, but its capability to create keyboard macros. The G15 features 18 additional "G" keys on the left hand side of the keyboard, which are completely customizable to playback complicated sequences of keystrokes (i.e. macros) for whatever game or Windows application you might have. These 18 keys can each be reassigned under three different "M" keyboard maps, giving you the capability to assign 3 different macros on one G key. Think of these keys as a hardware version of Keyboard Express built into your keyboard--only the macros are "hard-wired" to specific applications, i.e., the macros only work once an application you assign to it is running on your PC. In a nutshell you a) launch the included G-Series Keyboard Profiler software, b) name and assign a macro to a specific executable program, and then c) record the keystrokes to the macro.Only after you run the designated program the macro becomes available for use.

Logitech included premade profiles for Battlefield 2 and Star Wars Battlefront in its Profiler software. As you might imagine these profiles contain some basic prebuilt macros assigned to G-Keys for those specific games, giving your keyboard some added functionality. As for the Profiler software itself--it isn't all that flashy, but contains some great tutorials to get you started. It isn't rocket science creating macros on this keyboard, but it isn't clear-cut easy either.Going through the help tutorials in the included software is a good idea. If you're not at all interested in reading, it's also pretty simple to create a macro on the fly using the Quick Macro function--just hit the MR record key, choose a G key, enter your keystrokes, then hit the MR key to stop recording. It's very simple to create macros on the fly this way.

The G Keys can also be assigned to general apps under the standard profile--default web browser, calculator, email program, My Computer, and default media player. So in essence it retains the functionality of Logitech's other keyboard, the Media Keyboard Elite.

The LCD display is a whole lot less useful than the G Keys. In the normal Windows environment it provides very basic information--one display option gives you a basic clock with hands along with the digital time and date. Another option gives you the current CPU and RAM usage in a percentage bar. It will also display basic information about the file you are playing in your default media player. Apparently you are able to use the LCD display within games, but according to the help software the game must come with "LCD support". So, ultimately (out of the box at least) the LCD isn't very useful or helpful. It's a very basic display, as well -- not too much different from the $5 LCD alarm clocks you can buy at the Jewelry section at your local Target.

The G15 has some other noteworthy features-more specifically backlit keys for late night play, 2 additional USB ports, and full media player controls. The backlit keys give a pretty nice blue glow to the keys and two brightness settings are available. The LCD screen becomes backlit along with the keys as well. The two USB ports are a disappointment from my experience.I could not connect my Motorola MPX220 cell phone to my PC through the ports on the keyboard--Windows kicked back a message that the port did not have enough power to support the device. The keyboard also features a cable management system (which are actually just wire channels under the keyboard) to prevent cable clutter. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

Ergonomically the keyboard is pretty standard fare for Logitech. The keys themselves are slightly smaller than in the Media Keyboard Elite, but really no less comfortable. They also give about the same tactile response as in other Logitech keyboards. One thing to keep in mind is that this keyboard, with its additional G keys and flip up LCD display, is on the big side, so it may not fit on your keyboard drawer with the LCD display in the open position. The keyboard itself is about 21 1/2"L x 8 1/2"D x 3 1/2" H with the feet up and the LCD monitor flipped open.

Overall I can't help but feel "suckered into" buying this keyboard by looking at its sleek design and LCD. I expected a lot more functionality from the LCD display out of the box. However, I am satisfied with the overall flexibility the G15 offers. So ultimately the true beauty of the G15 lies beneath the surface.

The G15 also features a switch that turns off the 'Windows' key, so hitting that button accidentally won't end your game. The Logitech G15 keyboard is completely customizable to help you play better. AVC-1400 comes with a Gamebridge main unit, a USB cable to connect Gamebridge to the computer, a 4-in-1 cable to connect the video/audio source like game console to Gamebridge, and Installation CD/guide.

USB cable uses the standard mini-USB connector on Gamebridge side, and USB A on PC side.

4-in-1 cable has composite, audio L and R, and S-Video for A/V source, and a very small proprietary connector (smaller than that mini-USB) for the Gamebridge main unit side. The small connector worries me, as it seems to be quite easy to break.

It's misleading to say AVC-1400 is small. The Gamebridge main unit is small for sure, but you can't just carry main unit with you and not bring AV 4-in-1 cable and USB cable. Without those cables, you can't have the video/audio send to your computer. So, consider all the pieces you need to get this to work, the whole thing is not that small. Also, I don't really like the idea to have this AV 4-in-1 cable. I'd prefer all the A/V connectors to be built into the Gamebridge main unit itself. That way, you don't have to worry about breaking that tiny connector. Also, you have less pieces to carry around, thus less chance to lost something.

Software installation includes two parts - Gamebridge driver and InterVideo Home Theater application. Both installed smoothly from the included CD. Application installation take longer than I expected. Also, I thought I don't really need InterVideo Home Theater application.

I tried this thing with my two sons playing GameCube. The video quality is pretty good, but full screen mode is a little bit blurry, as my son put it. Then again, the result is actually better than I expected. I have no problem with sound, unlike a user has reported earlier. Recording is fine too. There is a very short video freeze immediately after click on recording button, but smooth after that. Recording has three mode - Good, Better, and Best. My test was done with Best video quality.

I thought I should be able to use any software that has video capture ability to display the video from A/V source. But I tried Skype and VLC, both failed to open up Gamebridge capture device. VLC actually hung my Windows.

All in all, Gamebridge does provide me the ability to play console games using my computer as a TV monitor. And it allows me to record the game session. All in pretty good video/audio quality. 4-star rating because I don't like the fact that I need to carry three pieces of hardware. This will be a perfect device if the USB cable and A/V cable are built into the Gamebridge.

StarTech.com USB TO PS/2 KEYBOARD ( USBPS2PC ) Review

StarTech.com USB TO PS/2 KEYBOARD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have an old Dell ergonomic (split) keyboard that I really like, that still works great, but has a PS2 plug. I have a new Dell Optiplex 300 that only has USB outlets - no PS2. This is the perfect solution - plug and play. It just works. I was a little concerned after reading some reviews for similar products, especially after reading the mixed reviews for Cables Unlimited ADP-5210, for example. After reading another review for another product, I found this, ordered it, and am very satisfied. Highly recommended. In fact, I'm typing out this review with the keyboard connected through the adapter right now!

Retrolink Nintendo NES USB Controller for PC and Mac Review

Retrolink Nintendo NES USB Controller for PC and Mac

If you're using an NES emulator, you've probably run into the same problem I had: finding a controller that mimics the originals. It seems no modern USB controller quite got the D-pad right. This simple accessory solved my problem. Finally, Mario is once again able to climb those bean stocks without constantly falling off.

New USB Power Charge Cable Adapter for Nintendo NDSi Review

New USB Power Charge Cable Adapter for Nintendo NDSi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this product in anticipation of a three-week stint in Italy during which I would not have access to an American AC plug. I am bringing my MacBook Pro and already have the Apple M8794G/B World Travel Adapter Kit to keep my notebook charged overseas. However, having very recently purchased a DSi (read: this product arrived before the DSi did) I wanted an inexpensive way to charge my DSi while I was away from home. Enter the USB Power Charge Cable Adapter, which seemed like a natural solution, and something that would suffice - but the product is so good that I felt the need to write a review. There are a couple things that make it excellent:
a) The price. It's right. Paying less than $6 shipped (in my case it arrived in 2 days with regular shipping from HDE) is spot on for a useful cable like this.
b) The make. This cable has a finish which feels remarkably similar to that of the DSi, and the coloring is a match for the matte black DSi. I am also happy to say that the product quickly and easily charges the DSi without any hassle.
