Spy vs Spy Review

Spy vs Spy
Average Reviews:

Honestly, I have never seen a game that offers as many multiplayer options and strategies as Spy vs. Spy.And I play alot of Xbox Live games - so that's saying something. There is something for everyone in this game.My neice/nephew and I play it in split screen mode and have a blast. They think the traps are funny - so funny that they walk into some of them on their own just to see the comic aspects of it.Also, something to mention, is that it was easy for them to pick up and master (and they are only 9 and 13)!!

When the kids are gone, I just hop online and play other adults (and sometimes kids).I find that the gameplay changes alot when playing against other advanced players.Mainly, because there are so many strategies to use!You can trap safes, hideouts, attack players, etc.And the game modes are plentiful so you never get bored. We played the modern mode where you can set how much money you have to earn before winning, we played one where you get the Mad Logo and whoever can hold it the longest and rack up the points wins and we played it where you collect objects and have to run to an escape area to win.

The levels range from being small to large and you can play up to four people.I think there are a total of 8 levels to jump into in modern mode and then in classic mode you play in rooms instead of an open level. In classic mode it is alot more frantic which is cool and you get to use a map to see where your friends are.The map is also useful in this mode to see what rooms have been trapped and which ones have items in the safes.

Finally, there is a story mode with 8 levels and you get to unlock things like outfits for your spy.I got the clown outfit and it is just hilarious to use online.I have a big rainbow wig on; sure it makes me easier to see, but it is too funny.

Overall, a great 20 buck game that anyone can enjoy and it is quite different and fun to master compared to other online games I play, like Splinter Cell or Unreal/Halo.Those games are great too, but the strategies you get to use in this game are just too fun to pass up!

The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics Review

The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics
Average Reviews:

I was excited when I first learned about this book coming out because it's difficult for me to set up a normal artist's station in my house. Not knowing who this Freddie Williams guy was, I ended up going to his website and checking him out. It was here that I first became dismayed.

His website has a section labeled "DigiArt Quick Tools," in which one can find several Photoshop tools Freddie has available. These include several variations of his MasterPage file, which tend to cost a little bit of money (the bundle pack that gives you all the Master Pages runs I think about $125). I also noticed a blurb in which Freddie mentions that an entire section of the upcoming book is devoted to the Master Page. I immediately started thinking that the book was going to end up being a $15 commercial for the various tools he has to offer.

Never have I been so glad to be so dead wrong.

The section on Master Pages walks you through the process of making your own Master Page, and while he mentions his website, he never tells the reader to go buy anything. Instead, he teaches you how to do it yourself. In fact, there's only one thing that Freddie tells the reader to download, and that's the perspective tool that he created... and its free (as is a generic version of the Master Page, if you don't want to make your own or pay money for a company-specific Page).

As far as the rest of the book goes, it was a massive wake-up call in regards to realizing how powerful and how fast creating sequential artwork on the computer is. In fact, it seems that Freddie's main goal is to get the reader to create better artwork, faster, and he constantly discusses ways to make your work faster and more streamlined.

Be warned, though... this is NOT a "how to draw" book. If you don't know how to draw, this book won't be that helpful to you. This book is more accurately described as a "how to use the computer to draw" book. Additionally, if you don't know how to do any basic drawing in Photoshop, you might want to learn, quick. I have a very basic understanding of how to draw and paint with Photoshop, and this book has my mind racing with all the possibilities I have available to me now. Be prepared to think and imagine when you read the book.

Not every aspect of Freddie's work method will work for everyone, and he acknowledges fact. He describes his methods to the reader, and for key areas offers alternative paths for the reader to take that may be more comfortable for the reader.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes, I did. Did I learn anything from this book? Almost every step of the way. Would I recommend this book to the serious hobbyist or the artist getting into the comics field? Without a doubt and with no reservations, yes!!!!

40 Years of the X-Men Review

40 Years of the X-Men
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, this isn't a game, or a movie. Its a DVD-rom that can only be viewed on a DVD capable computer.
THE GOOD
This the first 40 year run of the comic book X-men, currently titled Uncanny X-Men.It includes issues 1-461, in order by year, including Giant Size X-Men 1.It also includes all the annuals in a separate menu. These are high quality scans, all in PDF format.
THE BAD
This includes ONLY Uncanny X-Men issues. Thats all fine and dandy, until you get to the mid-80's when X-Factor and New Mutants began their runs.So when you get to major cross over events, like the Mutant Massacre, Inferno, X-tiction Agenda, X-cutioner's Song, and the minor ones inbetween, you only get the Uncanny issues. This leaves some major holes in the stories.Sure, you can go buy the TPBs of the crossovers, but then you're re-buying the Uncanny issues. All the Age of Apocalypse is missing too, along with X-franchising one shots like X-Men Prime.
THE UGLY
You'll have to play around with the viewer settings to make the pages readable on a standard screen, without making them too difficult to flip through. All pages seem to be scanned in two page spreads. And all the original ads are intact.
Overall, its nice in and of itself, I just wish something could have been done about the cross-overs.That and the general lack of knowledge about this product here on Amazon and on the net in general are probably making this a rough sell at $50.

Spider-Man Review

Spider-Man
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nothing bothers me more than people who write a review on something they've never played or seen just because they like the franchise or they "think" it will be cool.At least wait untill you experience it before you go hyping it up to levels it can't possibly reach and leaves others dissappointed because "all these people were raving that it was going to be the best thing since sliced bread."Sorry.had to get that out. Now, on with the review:
You play the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, the hyphen is there because this game is based on the upcomming May 3 theatrical release of Spider-Man.Being as how the movie is in the future and I don't want to pretend that I can see that far, I don't know how close the game sticks to the movie plot. However, from what I can tell the voice actors are the same as the movie.ie William DeFoe portrays Harry Osborne aka the Green Goblin, Kirsten Dunst portrays Mary Jane, Peter/Spidey's love interest, (although it's hard to tell if it's actually her because her voice is not all that distinctive, no offence Kirsten.)And what sounds like Tobey MacGuire playing the webhead himself.
One of the cool aspects of this game is that if you played the previous Playstation 1 version of the game, you can opt to use the same control style.Or you can used the advanced control style which I'd recommend.(but why should you listen to me? It's your world- Bob Ross)The controls take some time to get used to mainly due to the frustrating camera. You have control of the camera using the right analog stick but sometimes it's frustrating if you need to turn around and all you see is Spidey's face, not what's actually behind you until you tap the stick down to recenter the camera behind you.
I'm going to take this time to delve into something that I thought was the games best selling point and made it the most fun.Aerial combat. While it was possible to swing around and attack in the air in the first game, this game takes it to an all new level. There are a few levels based solely on attacking spider hunters that fly through the air high above the city and you must flip and twist and swing through the air to defeat them.In one level, you are battling with the green goblin through the air as he zips along hurling pumpkin bombs at you.At one point, and I don't know how I did it but it was the coolest thing I've ever seen, I landed on Goblins air rider thing and started hamering him with my fists in the head until he got upset and took a sharp turn while flinging me off. Now, during these aerial battles, you can land on any one of the numerous buildings if you need a break and there are helth icons all over the place. But these environments definitely upped the replay value of this game for me.
There are tons of secrets throughout this game and I refuse to use any cheats until I've at least beaten the game once. However, I did come accross something and I don't know if it's true or not that once you beat the game on hero, you can play through as the goblin.Don't quote me but it might be pretty cool.
The nitty gritty-
Graphics:4.5The graphics were a little overplayed by those people who hype things up and say that there will be nothing better but they are nonetheless pretty cool. You can see the cars moving around down on the streets from 70 stories up.Spideys new outfit based on the movie has metalic web outlines which shine in certain lighting. The FMV (full motion video ie Final Fantasy) looks very good and the characters look like the actors who portray them in the movie.Nice touch.
Sound: 4.5 The sound is good don't get me wrong but there are a couple of times when (Tobey?) sounds bored. He could have used a little more inflection in his voice but that's nothing to get too upset over. The guy who narrates the training is a hoot.At one point he says he's going to get a ham sandwhich and the next time you hear him he's definitly chewing on something.
Controls: 5It's hard to argue with a game that allows you to customize your control issues. If you prefer the old style, use em.But the advanced allows for many of the new improved actions to be performed easily once you get the hang of it.
Gameplay: 5++Definitly the selling point of the game. (after the movie, the franchise, all those people hyping it up, and the fact that it is a cool game)You really feel as though you are granted great powers and responsibility yada yada.Seriously, you feel as though you are actually Spider-Man.If you enjoyed the first game, you will not be let down in the least.
BTW, for those of you who thought the first game was a little too cartoony or childish, this game isn't.It starts off telling about ****SMALL SPOILER****Uncle Bens death and you must track down his killer to avenge him. That cheesy repairte that made it into the first game didn't make the cut here. Just some witty banter between heros and thugs. If you've ever wanted to experience being Spider-Man, go get the game.Or you could work with radiation and spiders and hope that one will bite you with the correct resutlts but I don't recommend that.

Super Mario Advance Review

Super Mario Advance
Average Reviews:

There's a lot of griping about how disappointing Super Mario Advance (SMA) is. It's a 32-bit rehash of a 16-bit remake of an 8-bit game, blah blah. But lack of originality aside, is the game FUN? Yes it is.
SMA is classic Mario Bros. 2 and the original Mario Bros. and I can tell you, it's a helluva lot of fun. I always loved MB2, and this update adds a couple of new gameplay elements to make things a bit more interesting. And while it doesn't really push the GBA's technical limits, it does make use of the nice graphics engine in the handheld, for some cute special effects.
The original Mario Bros. that's included is great as well, especially in multiplayer. It gets a bit old in single player mode, but it's still fun nevertheless.
Anyway, it comes down to this - Super Mario Advance is a good game to add to your collection. It's nothing really new, but it doesn't change the fact that the games inside it are just as fun as the day they came out so many years ago, on their original platforms. Ignore the whining complaints about it, and check it out for yourself. I'm sure you'll like it.

I was looking at this game, i checked out some of the reviews and i just really think that most of you people have no lives. Seriously, they say " i played for 15 hours straight and it gets boring", that's because you played for 15 hours straight, not because it's boring!!If you have a real life, you won't play for 15 hours and ruin the game in two days. I just had to say that.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Review

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sonice & Sega All-Stars racing takes the popular genre of the racing genre and adds in our favorite SEGA characters. One of the leading features of the game is the wide amount of fan service given to the characters. Sonic fans will love to see their Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Eggman as racers; they will see tracks themed with Sonic (and even sound effects like the bumper from the casinos of the Sonic the Hedgehog series), and they will even be able to hear and unlock numerous songs from throughout the Sonic universe, such as "Super Sonic Racing" from Sonic R, or even "What U Need" from Sonic Rush. Not only is this true for the Sonic series but is true for the other series represented (Sambe De Amigo, Super Monkey Ball, etc).

This game brings SEGA characters and unites them in this genre, which is perhaps quite fun.For the PS3, PSN support lets players race with up to 4 players split screen (locally), or with 2 to 8 players via the online mode.

The mechanics to racing are quite simple with really easy to grasp controls.Use a trigger button to gas, one to break, and then the x-button to launch a weapon. Its pretty fast and hectic which makes every racing experience unique.

There is just one fault and that is probably some of the levels are quite short, however its only about four of them among the twenty-four tracks. The voice acting of the characters is true to how they have always sounded, and the narrator is quite funny.

Definitely check the game out and enjoy it.

*DLC is upcoming

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this game when it first came out.I thought it was an okay Star Wars FPS, but that some of the bosses were kind of hard to beat.Blasters and thermal detonators were iffy so I just flailed away with the lightsaber while mainly trying to run away. One of the big problems was that a regular mouse, even a wheel mouse did not have enough buttons to smoothly use the Force powers. It was similar to what I thought after seeing Episode IV and V: "What's the big deal with the Jedi Force powers and those light sabers? They have to be pretty close to use them so what good are they in a large scale fight?"

After watching Episode II I replayed it, but this time with a Logitech mouse with a ton of extra controls on it.Whoa!BIG difference. Now instead of stabbing blindly at F-keys I could control the Force powers and deploy them quickly and accurately. Then it was more like "Whoa, if the Jedi Knights could do *this* no wonder people/aliens thought twice before messing with them!".

At this point the game became interesting, especially after watching Episode III.Pay attention to what the enemy Force users and Kyle can do, because they will give you hints at what you can do.Note all the combo lightsaber attacks and their counters. At that point some enemies that were problems are no longer particularly significant.

Because you can select different Force powers as your character develops, it changes how you deal with each level and type of enemy. This means if you like the game you can keep replaying it and experimenting.

As far as good and bad Force powers go, note that Kyle says that it's not so much which powers you select but how you use them (so ignore Luke I guess). For example Kyle uses Force Lightning a lot.

As I type this I'm wondering if it might be possible to play all or most of the upper levels without using weapons at all.I may have to give it a try.

If you think you might want to replay it, be sure to save some of the higher levels where you have to make decisions about selecting specialized Force powers so you don't have replay the whole game if you don't want to.

Unfortunately increasing the single player difficulty decreases the rate at which your Force powers charge and your maximum shield charge instead of adding more enemies, etc. However, at one of the higher levels you get to make the big decision and if you choose the Dark Side you get to fight twice as many enemies.

Then there is a second aspect to the game.Playing single player using the Force Powers shows why the Jedi were so powerful in the movies. But if you didn't rely too much on Force Powers you now know how to fight with a light saber.Besides the basic moves, combo attacks, the counters there are also three combat styles and three diffent types of light sabers. This means there are a LOT of combinations. If you've learned those, go on-line and try your new skills against other Jedi Academy players.I haven't looked recently so I don't know how many servers and on-line players are out there (due to the game's age).

It's an old game so it's hardware requirements are not too demanding compared to 2006 titles. But in my opinion the game play and chance to play as a Jedi Knight make it a fun game even today. For ten bucks I think it's a deal.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Review

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a huge skeptic of this game at first, MK VS DC, it was like combining toothpaste with orange juice...."Ugh"!
But Midway pulled it off. I spent probably 3 hours with the game last night (alas no online yet) and was very pleased.
First off the PS3's controller rocked the house as far as response with the D-pad.
Second; The game itself is FUN, not only do you have the standard arcade "Tower of Power" to climb, this MK throws in a neat story mode with beautiful cut scenes and a unique way to play all the characters.
While playing the game, I never even noticed the fact it was "T" rated, blood still flies, body's and costumes get damaged (you can actually knock off Scorpion's mask), and the fighting is just plain brutal.
There's 3 new gimmicks within the matches Close Kombat, Free Fall Kombat, and Test Your Might, which add some flair to the matches.
Free Fall is cool as heck.
Fatalities are here, and even toned down, they look great. I reduced Wonder Woman to skeletal remains with a "Lava Bath" the burned Captain Marvel to a crisp with "Hellfire" both courtesy of Scorpion.
Even blade happy Barraka has cool Fatalities, my favorite is the "Impale", where he knocks an opponent on his back, jumps on top of him, punches him in the chest, then fires his blades into the victim.
Looks awesome, not gory, but looks awesome.
There is going to be a learning curve to take advantage of the combos, and the game can kick your butt even on easy.
All in all this looks and feels like an MK game without a doubt, and definite improvement over all the MK games since MKIII.
I would like to see MK return to it's "M" rated roots, but I'll sacrifice a little gore over game play any day.

The story of how the heroes and villains of Mortal Kombat and theDC universe could find themselves not only existing on the same plain, butbattling each other revolves around coincidental victories in the respectiverealms by Raiden and Superman. In Raiden's case it was a victory over ShaoKahn, while Superman bested Darkseid. These occurred at the exact same timeand involved inter-dimensional elements, which somehow merged their twoenemies into one being, Dark Kahn, while allowing the characters of thetwo universes to interact. In this merging the powers of the heroes andvillains are scrambled as well, making some stronger than they ever were, and leaving others vulnerable for the first time in their lives, allowingeach to battle on more or less equal footing. And battle they do withoutrealizing that the uncontrollable rage that they feel for each other isactually the work of Dark Khan.

Gameplay
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe being a fighter, gameplay consistsof one-on-one battles, both in local play and online, in which playerscan choose a character from either side who will face off against a counterpartfrom the other. Each character has unique attacks and special finishingmoves, and fighting arenas vary depending on whether your character comesfrom the Mortal Kombat or DC universe. Keeping with the reputationfor brutality in the Mortal Kombat franchise, characters from thisside will have access to fatalities, while the historically less overlyviolent DC characters will execute "heroic brutalities," which are endmoves where the opponent while beaten, is not killed. The game also featuresnew gameplay mechanics such as: Freefall Kombat, in which players canengage in extended combat while in midair; Klose Kombat, during whichthe play angle moves to a close-up view of the action; The Test Your Mightmini-game where you smash your opponent through walls; and Rage Mode, which increases the power of a character's attack by 50% and providesprotection against being stunned by an opponent.
