Total Annihilation Review

This game is tremendous long-term fun and enjoyment! Both its simplicity and depth draws you in.Tactics and strategy are paramount.SimCity infrastructure and systematic, medium to long-range planning is necessaryfor building units and other machines. However, this doesn't do squat foryou if you don't have the close-in combat tactics - and the finerunderstanding which land, air, sea unit (or combination) will get youresults. The 3rd-person point-of-view is best when commanding hundreds ofunits and war-making capabilities.
The graphics and sound score iskiller. You've got to watch some of the explosions - they are cool!Youcan't get this type of super incendiary stuff from WarCraft. Add on units, maps, and scenarios are readily available on the Cavedog site.
I'veplayed 3vs1, 2vs2, and 1vs1 on various networks (from NY, OH, and CAcombatants) and had no major problems. This people versus peoplecompletely changes your strategy and tactics - making the game that muchmore high-value.My only minor peave is that you need more than thestandard 10 quick-team assignments for those intensecampaigns.
Regardless, I've been playing for 1+ years - and still loveit.

Earthbound Review

i still remember the first time i played this game. it was given to me by and old neighbor of mine as a gift back in 1995. ever since then i think ive beaten and restarted this game over a hundred times. to me this game never gets old. the only reason i still have my snes is just for this game. i highly recomend this game to anyone that likes RPGs. it is so simple that anyone can pick it up but the storyline is so deep that it actually makes you care deeply about these 16-bit sprites on the screen.

the music is so catchy, each city has its own theme and almost each enemy has his own music. the music for this is perfect for the tone of the game.

the graphix are sufficient. sprite detail is great. the only complaint anyone has (not me) is the battle graphics are just a box with your name on it fighting a picture of the enemy. very simple but youlle actually be suprised how well it works.

replayability is by far the best aspect of the game. there is so much to do and its so fun to complete all the tasks.

it is a little bit hard to figure out what to do next though, even the original game came with the players guide. if you dont have a guide you can easily download a guide online for free.

Soldier of Fortune II Double Helix Review

Soldier of Fortune II Double Helix
Average Reviews:

I bought this game while shopping for a more modern tactical shooter.I'm and ex Counter-Strike junkie and I've played Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Medal of Honor:Allied Assault and quite frankly I'm a bit sick of the current trends in online gaming as well as the community in general.I was looking for something with a lot more single-player replay value.
I'm sure by now everyone knows a little bit about SoF2 so I'll omit the overview and get straight to the point. This is basically just another Q3A mod with more blood and gore.Like RTCW and MOHAA, the graphics are good and technology seems sound, but for such a latecommer I believe it's reasonable to have expected a bit more.
The single-player campaign is your typical linear shooter.Run around, do these things in order, pick up more weapons, etc....The story itself is terrible - think Max Payne meets the A-Team.There were some great ideas mixed in, and I really appreciated the more modern military feel, but by now we're all getting a bit tired of the same format. The random mission generator looks appealing, and was a major factor in the decision to buy this game, but it becomes redundant far too easily. If you intend on purchasing this game only for the single-player features, I would strongly recommend some serious comparison shopping before putting the money down.
As previously stated, I'm not much of an online gaming fan, but I felt it was necessary to give the MP games a chance before writing this review. To my surprise, MP is pretty darn fun!It supports the usual team-oriented games (CTF, TDM, etc...), and doesn't add anything revolutionary to the mix, but the combination of the modern weapons and outdoor themes really made this a blast.Compared to what's currently out there, SoF2 does the best job in mixing action with simulated warfare.Unfortunately, the Q3A "feel" or the game is still there. The damage system is a bit too forgiving, and I don't know how anyone could jump around with 80lbs of gear on their backs, but I guess this is the way people like it.If you're a big fan of Half-Life and Quake mods, you'll feel right at home with this.Counter-Strike fans will probably consider it on the goofy side of the spectrum, but I think they should still give it a chance.
Of course, my biggest gripe with most of the online shooters is this:Even the best laid plans and teamwork can be spoiled in a heartbeat by some rambo running around with a grenade launcher.
Anyways, SoF2 is a shining example of modern game technology that's just starting to become dated. It can easily be worth the price tag, but I fear that in less than 2 months it will take it's place on the shelf next to the other Q3A-driven games and collect dust. Not the tactical shooter I was looking for, but I'm glad I had a chance to play it.

Doom 2 (Jewel Case) Review

Doom 2

After a hard day at work, there's nothing more satisfying than planting your good old double barrel in an imp's belly and giving him the heave-ho.Doom was the beginning of a new era in PC games. It's graphics engine technology and style have shown up in almost all first person shooter games released since it's original debut. It's enduring legacy is due to the fact that the authors kept the game strategy simple:find the bad guys and blow them to tiny bits.No complicated keyboard/mouse movements or hard to use weapons, just lock, load, and kill or be killed!

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 Review

Monster Hunter Freedom 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is by far the best version of one of the best video games ever made (I've played all US and Japan versions). Lots of little improvments over the Japanese PS2 release makes this worth the wait. The best dragon/creature fighting experience you can have in a game - but it takes work and patience to get there.

Huge hit in Japan, but so-so in USA outside its core fans. Reviewers calling for auto-target miss the whole point of this game: it's all about developing the skill to target specific areas of each monster (and then not getting killed!). Camera is definitely weird at first, but once you get the hang of it you'll be wishing other games used the same system. Basically YOU have to point the camera, it doesn't move for you! Final aspect of game is it takes patience to do a little farming, mining, bug catching activities - something I enjoy but not for everyone, however, with new version you can minimize those activities if you just want to bust some monsters up. Some people may never get over those hurdles, which is fine - there are plenty of games that I don't like that are still great games. I can guarantee that if you spend enough time with the game so the camera and weapons system are second nature, you are in for some of the most heart-thumping monster battles you could ever imagine, and the beasts keep coming and coming! If I made a list of my top 10 gaming moments, probably 8 or 9 would be things that happened in MH - and I've played plenty of other games.

Need to get WIFI max and KAI for online play - not directly supported at this time, but it works OK. Ad-hoc face to face is great fun for up to 4 people. MHF2 has more weapons & armor than you'll ever be able to use, faster load times, stabilized camera, and loads of other improvements that make this the best time to give Monster Hunter a decent go.

Dragon Ball: Raging Blast Review

Dragon Ball: Raging Blast
Average Reviews:

I wanted a DBZ game for my PS3 and after finding out it had a bit more sagas than Burst Limit, I got this.

The camera angles are beyond terrible. Good luck to anyone focusing on your opponent when you end up near a wall.

Buttons/commands won't work most of the time and that really sucks when you need them the most.

There is only ONE set of combos per character so 9 times out of 10 you'll end up using Super attacks just to finish the battle.

No screams when they power up. wtf it just looks hella weird.

Battles/playing with characters in the story mode idgaf about. (I really could have cared less about Yamcha/Tien/Chiaotzu fighting a dead Ginyu Force)

Not worth replaying the story mode over and over to get stars. (Goku's alternate outfits are not THAT important)

WAIT until this game is 19.99$ or less, or wait for the sequal which is hopefully 100x better

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Review

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all let me start by saying I haven't finished the game. I have played the intro then the first mission in each dimension and wanted to share my early thoughts with those that are considering whether or not to buy this game. I will edit this review if I find my opinions change after finishing it.
Another word of warning, I am a bit of a spider man fan, grew up with the comics (although I haven't read any for years now) so I'm not sure my review is 100% unbiased. Grain of salt and all that.

STORY

The first thing that I noticed is that there was a lot more care taken with the spider man character than in the previous game (Web of Shadows). He has a lot more personality, his jokes are funnier and, although I wouldn't call the voice acting brilliant, at least he doesn't sound like a constipated teenager anymore. I found myself chuckling at many points in the game from the jokes he throws at his enemies. This has a surprising effect on the heroic feel of the game as well (it's one thing to beat the bad guys up, it is another one entirely to do that while making fun of them).
The overarching story of the game is not all that good to be honest. It feels more like an excuse to check out the different spider man realities than anything else. But it also doesn't take itself too seriously: some of the cutscenes between dimensions are narrated by a voice that I'm pretty sure is Stan Lee using the same type of silver age narrative the old spider man comics had on the 80s. Maybe there will be a plot twist along the way, but I'm not holding my breath. Having said that, the mini stories within each chapter are pretty cool, in the sense that it links together the various events at each stage pretty well and do a good job at keeping you engaged.

GAMEPLAY

If you did your homework you know by now that this is not a sandbox game. You are not given free roam of NYC beating up criminals along the way, which was default the format for spider man games for a long time now. Instead they have chosen a format in which you choose a stage and play that stage from start to finish. So it's less like GTA and more like GoW3.
I think this format works very well with this game. It allows each stage to be more varied, as you are not restricted to being on the same environment all the time. The developers did a good job at making the levels feel varied, so you are never doing the same thing over and over (clear room of bad guys, move to next room, repeat). At one point you are dodging Kraven's sniper rifle, the other you are evading his traps, the next you are falling down a skyscraper canyon in 2099 and a couple hours later figuring out how to get hammerhead from behind his giant gatling gun in the 1930's. That choice is not without a price though, as you lose the thrill of web zipping away into the horizon (although the webzip mechanic is pretty much exactly the same as previous games, the spaces are a bit more constrained). You lose a bit of replay value that the sandbox format tends to have.
Spidey himself handles a lot like Web of Shadows, with a bit less emphasis on wall crawling and aerial combat (although both are still present) and a better combat system overall. One of the new ideas in this game is that you enter a "defensive stance" by holding L2. While doing that Spidey automatically dodges all "regular" attacks, and can only be hit by special moves (which you get advance warning via spider sense to push X and jump out of the way),This is also how you lock the camera on one target.
Another interesting concept is that now you can webzip to specific areas of the stage, like lamp posts or on top of a column. When you face an area that can be targeted this way you will see a small triangle (think the bat hook in Arkham Asylum) and tapping R2 you web zip there automatically. This is handy because it would take a long time (and in some cases pretty precise landing) to get to a these areas that you can now zip to in a second.
The camera is still not 100%, I guess it's always a challenge with spider-man games since you zip around so much and the wall crawling bit is still a bit confusing. But perhaps because there are less emphasis on situations where the camera goes bananas, I haven't felt this to be much of an issue.
I don't agree to say that this is 4 games in 1. The only dimension that really feels totally different in terms of gameplay is the Noir one, which is stealth based. However the other 3 spider man dimensions have enough little things that are different, from the visuals to the speed of the character attacks to some special abilities here and there like the symbiote rage and the 2099 spidey's "bullet time" that each feels unique. The expressions and language used help set the tone as well, particularly in the Noir dimension where the 1930's lingo really helps to flesh out the setting.
The boss battles are really cool too, and they are more like "action puzzles" than real straight up battles, and you always have to figure out how to beat the bad guy, either with simple things like waiting for Kraven to charge before web-zipping in and having at him or zipping the hobgoblin's bombs in the air and throwing them back at him.
Last but not least the upgrading system is pretty nice, you gain points for beating up enemies and breaking crates (sight), but also from completing challenges within each level, like beating 10 enemies by zipping a bench on their head, or doing 5 stealth takedowns in a row without being detected. You also have your mandatory spider tokens scattered around each phase.

GRAPHICS/SOUND

I will admit I'm not a very good judge for that (to me gameplay > graphics), so I'll keep it brief. The game has a cartoonish feel, so you won't see a lot of jaw dropping textures like what you can see in games like Red Dead Redemption or Assassin's Creed. But I think for what they were trying to do the graphics do a pretty good job. What I did notice is that each dimension is a bit different graphics wise, even the Ultimate and Amazing dimensions, which are the most similar, are not exactly the same if you pay attention.

CONTENT

Other than he tutorial, I played 4 mission so far (act I), and on normal they averaged out at ~50 min each to complete. (Amazing and noir took 1 hour, 2099 30 min and 45 for ultimate). If the same can be said about the other acts this should be an 9-12 hour game to beat, which is pretty much in line with other games like GoW, Uncharted 2 etc. After that there's hard mode, and the challenges (which I managed to nail most of them in my first play though each stage, except for the hidden spiders). Again, maybe once I beat the game there will be a surprise for more content, but I'm not expecting this. There are also unlockable concept art, figurines etc.
Basically if you think games like GoW, Heavenly Sword are worth buying (i.e. 9-12 hours of quality entertainement), you won't have a problem justifying this one. If you only buy games that have a lot of replay value, multiplayer etc this will probably leave you wanting for more.

Pros:
-Good action game with, well developed stages
-Great Spider Man characterization
-Nicely delivered acrobatic spider man combat
-Pretty cool boss battles

Cons:
-Replay ability
-Some small camera issues

Skate Review

Average Reviews:

A new series, walking into the mouth of a lion, skate is one of the most innovative and fresh games in the genera.A new control scheme paired with amazingly detailed graphics and challenging game play make for a sure buy if you're a fan of any extreme game series.

First and foremost, if you have a obsessive personality or are a perfectionist stay away from this game, because you'll not be getting any sleep. For everyone else the new flickit controls have a very hard learning curve, but after 15 minutes you should get the hang of it.A few problems with the controls plague this game, its super frustrating to hit the tiniest bump and have your skater turn around in the opposite direction but this is minor in a sea full of awesome.

The story doesn't have a lot of variety but what it does have is entertaining and enough to keep you going to the end.

Overall a solid game with room for great improvement that will leave it on the top of the ramp compared to everything else in the long run.Go pick this up if you've enjoyed other skating games, or if you want to try something new that will leave you having great times for a long time.

FIFA Soccer 11 Review

FIFA Soccer 11
Average Reviews:

I am mainly interested in the Manager mode, so here are some quick observations:
- Can play Manager mode as a Manager and player, as a player only or as a Manager only. You will need to play on Professional or higher, if you want to make it to the Leaderboards.
- Manager mode is simplified quite a bit, but menus are much more cumbersome. Instead of simply playing the games, you now have a calendar mode, similar to the one in Forza 3. To get to the game, you have to let each day pass (smart way to hide the longer loading times). Maybe I'll get used to these menus, but for now, they seem too complicated.
- Transfers: You have now a menu to sort by any criteria you want. You can find many top players from Day 1 (unlike Fifa 10), but you will no longer afford them easily. In Fifa 10, you would make an offer slightly higher and the deal would almost always get through. In Fifa 11, if the player plays in the main 11 team, many times you would need to make his club a top offer (up to twice the asking transfer price). Once the club agrees, the negotiation with the player is a separate step. Fabregas would have to wait - I don't have enough money yet.
- Some things seem to be out (or buried in some obscure menus???)- no Scouting, Stadium Improvements, etc. Lots of options are in though - how to set up the team, what strategies to use, etc. Some were already available in Fifa 10, but Fifa 11 gives us even more.
- Gameplay: AI plays slightly better defense, long passes work better, dribbling is better. Shooting is not as spectacular as it was in Fifa 10, but maybe closer to reality. For a pure fun game, you may want to keep Fifa 10 around, because Fifa 11 is more tactical and scoring is not as easy as before.
- Multiplayer: you will need to activate a unique code that comes with the game. If you buy a used game, double check with the seller to be sure they didn't use the code.
- Graphics: seems to be the same engine, but the players definitely look better than in Fifa 10.

Bottom line - different game from Fifa 10, but still fun. Should you buy this over Fifa 10? Fifa 10 is a pure fun, more arcade type of game. Fifa 11 is more of a sim and is more tactical. Both are great games and different enough to be worth owning.

PS2 to PS3 Controller Converter Adapter Review

PS2 to PS3 Controller Converter Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This version of the adapter is hit and miss. Theoretically it works but isn't compatible at times with controllers and certain driving wheels. DragonPlus came out with a version 2 of this same adapter and works beautifully. Since Sony has released firmware
2.7 that has disabled some of the ps2-ps3 controller adapters, Version 2 works great. I immediately tried some PS2 games in the PS3, and the DS2 worked as well as rumble. I also tested Battlefiled Bad Company and other PS3 games with rumble and the DS2 worked with rumble on PS3 games. I also have 3 steering wheels and those all worked with force feedback as well.

There is no PS button on this item, but the "analog" button on DS2's works the same as the PS button ( press once or hold function). There is also a trick to get to the XMB or to register some controllers by using Up and Select as the PS button.

For those wondering about input lag, Version 2 had no lag I could detect. Aiming in FPS was right on.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Review

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
Average Reviews:

After years of playing crummy Spider-man games like Spider-man 3, Friend or Foe, Web of Shadows; this game is perfect for the Spider-man fan. I grew up with Spider-man comics and of coarse had to have every video game that ever came out with his name on it. This is the best. The script writing and voice acting is perfect, as well as Spidey's wit and sarcasm intact and exactly as it should be. Sure the story is a little far fetched but it is a comic book game after all. In my mind this takes the greatness of the first Ultimate Alliance and mixes it with some tips from Arkham Asylum to make a perfect blend of ease and entertainment. The extra suits and level ups make it extremely fun and holds interest. The four worlds also make this anything but a boring old swing through New York and punch bullies. You'll have a new favorite costume each day. Obviously I recommend it and if you love Spidey, its a must have.

NBA 2K11 Review

NBA 2K11
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a 2k player for many years, I first started playing since 2K5 which was a great game as well. The last two years of NBA 2K have not been anything special, 2K10 felt like a minor leap over 2K9. However that is not the case this year, this game feels like a MAJOR leap over the previous games in the series, which I think most people didn't even think was possible.Graphics: Awesome, don't look at the gameplay videos, that tells a completely different story. When you actually play this game and look at it, the motions are amazing, particularly how the great the equipment on the players move when the characters run down the court. The facial expressions are also amazing, and give you an amazing feeling during highlights. Also the skin tones and the Tattoos all look good, and are placed in the right spot. The only knock on the graphics that I can say is how some of the characters have an unnatural look to them (Jermaine Oneal, Larry Bird, and even Kobe to some extents look weird). The UI and the menu system is very nice though, something 2K games have always been good at. The courts are also done in amazing detail and look good down to the last piece of hardwood floor. There is so much more to be said about the graphics, but its hard to sum it all up, the graphics all around are good I would rate them an 8 out of 10 definitely the best looking in the series. Sound: The sound is solid, the court sounds sound legit, the way the shoes sound during a quick stop and the way the ball sounds as your are dribbling and how it sounds when it goes in the net is perfect. The soundtrack for this game is very good, its definitely improving over the previous years versions and the best so far. You got Snoop, Drake, Big Boi, Cassidy, Kid Cudi, and even Ron Artest (lol). The sound is great, and the play by play is truly amazing. You really think you are watching the game, 2K has always been strong here after playing a couple of matches, I rarely heard the same things said in different games during pick up games, which is amazing. The announcers always have an amazing way in season mode/My Player mode of talking about when the season is coming to an end, and what place your current team is at in their conference which is amazing. They certainly put a lot of time and effort in the play by play which makes the ambience much better.Controls: Not a lot to say here, in one word it's great. If you have used the 2K controls before it will be like second nature here, its very easy for even beginners to pick up and play. After one full match from the beginning to end, you will already have a strong grasp on the controllers. So just solid here, and still one of the best things about 2K basketball games. Gameplay: A game changer, everything feels like its been improved from before. They still have all the legitimate traits of older games before this one. Lebron shoots like lebron, he has his signature shot, and his signature blocks, its scarily realistic with how they made so many players play like themselves. Tons of research had to go in for it to be this accurate. The new thing for this year is the jordan challenges. Believe it or not, this pays homage to the older 2K games. If you play NFL 2K5 (Rip) they had a mode where you can go back and play legendary games and win these game and do what those teams have done. Well, its back now, and you get to use all the amazing Bulls teams from 90's with Jordan. they also recreated all the rosters so that it is the same roster as jordan was with and the teams that he played against. So the challenges are like score 63+, plays his flu game, etc. Its really an amazing thing that they created here for the greatest basketball player of all time. The My Player mode is truly amazing, you start as basically a nobody, you create your character and when you are all finished you choose what kind of player you would like to be (scoring, passing, defensive, etc.) once you do that it assigns point to your player that can be used to build different stats. You start out in the draft combine, be impressive and you get drafted once you do, you start competing in the summer league. From there, now you are fighting for a roster spot, its really amazing and actually shows you the process of what these players have to do when they are coming to the NBA, amazing. Online, I have played about 5 games, and I have to say that its been great! No lag, and there has been no server problems which have been a huge knock on 2K basketball games online, it's looking good so far however.

EDIT 11/26/2010: Yep decided to edit this one, bought it since launch and I am still playing it even now, on black friday and also a month and a half after its release. The rating would not change at all this truly is an amazing game, you must try it for yourself!

Overall: IGN called this game one of the greatest sports games of our generation, and they are right. Nothing really quite matches everything it offers. If you play this game online and offline, you can easily surpass over 100 hours of gameplay before you know it. Throw in Jordan challenges, My player mode, and online in general, and you have a deep game with more to come back to each time you turn it on, THIS is what 2K basketball is all about.

Fallout 3 fans won't be disappointed!

Game starts off brilliantly, it sinks it's hooks into you and doesn't let go. In New Vegas you'll find wide open spaces much like Fallout 3, however the areas are more lively and interesting. The people you come across seem to have more depth than those in FO3. The main quest line in New Vegas is much larger than FO3's and isn't nearly as linear and the story telling along the way is just superb. The choices available run the course of the game, not just towards the end, and every choice is important and carries consequences or rewards. The weapon modding system is fantastic and really allows you to tailor a weapon that is right for your character, whether it be a hardcore mercenary or a silver tongued trader. The VATS system is very crisp, the companion feature makes it much easier to manage and utilize your friends.

Customization of your character is still somewhat stale with no real changes from FO3 which was a little disappointing however for some this could be considered trivial. With my experience so far the game has remained stable, I've experienced a few glitches and one crash so far as well as noticing a few bugs. Mainly NPCs falling through the floor :(

Overall any fan of Fallout 3 will enjoy this game very much. Even those who have never experienced any of the Fallout titles will enjoy hours upon hours of fun and enjoyable gameplay!
