NBA Jam 2004 Review

NBA Jam 2004

If you remember and liked the NBA Jam series for Super Nintendo you'll love the PS2 version of this game. This isn't regular basketball, it's 3 on 3 with nothing but slams, ally oops and other trick shots. If you like games such as NFL Blitz or NBA Street you'll love this game.
The graphics are absolutely awesome, players get tired in this game and show it with hands on knees and heavy breathing. You get the option to replace players at halftime, which is a great feature.
There's also a tournament feature where you can pick a team from today and play teams from the past. It starts in the 1950s in black and white and you go through the years up to the present day. It's an absolutely amazing feature, the black and white game play and commentary that sounds like it's from the 50s is very cool.
The only drawback I've found to the game is the AI seems to get an advantage to catch up if you get ahead of it too far in the game. I've picked the Lakers which is the best team in the game and not been able to blow out a mediocre rated team such as the Jazz.

NBA 2K8 Review

NBA 2K7 was arguably the greatest basketball game ever created. The gameplay was simply no match for NBA Live's gameplay, which was downright horrible.Well, just when I though 2K Sports couldn't make a better basketball game than last years, this game came out.One of the big problems with NBA 2K7 was the graphics.A lot of the players didn't really resemble their real life counterpart.Well, that is no longer the case.2K8's graphics are the best I've seen yet, and all the players look so realistic that you actually believe that you're out there with them sweating on the court.

Of course, graphics aren't everything, right?Well, 2K8 has even better gameplay than last years. The shot stick still rocks the house, but there are also a lot of new additions to each game you play. After each game, you can watch the top three plays of the game. But that's not the coolest part. After each game, you can watch a highlight real of any player during the game.If you're playing as Kobe Bryant and you score 50 points against your opponent, then after the game you can watch each amazing play made by Kobe during the game.Sweet, right?

Well, this game also has a very fun and very realistic Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. This should keep you busy for hours, and it isn't even a part of the main game. If you're not good a dunking, there is a dunk school that can teach you how to emulate LeBron on his jams. There is also a really cool 3-Point Shootout.

So, if you're debating whether or not you should go with the hoops king 2K8, or try NBA Live 08, then I would HIGHLY suggest you get 2K8.Even though Live 08 is greatly improved upon, it still has a ways to go to catch up with 2K Sports and their basketball genius.

This is definitely the best NBA experience you can receive from your old ps2.The graphics are top notch for the system and even not as popular players look recognizable. The gameplay can vary based on how you adjust your sliders and can be adjusted to anyone's preference to how often certain shots go in and how good your players are and so forth.I haven't been keeping up deeply with the 2k games over the years but this one definitely hits all the levels of a great basketball game. It's also more deep than NBA Live because you can do certain practices to develop a player in a variety of ways in association mode.My only complaint is that in the ps2 version, I have failed to find a way to change a players designated position. There is a player that nowadays plays more sg than sf and I can't change that. Also, there isn't a way (that I know of) to change someone's jersey number outside of association or season mode. But these can be overlooked being that they are not the forefront of what makes this game fun to play. The controls in the game and animations are fluent and smooth and are not faulty in the sense to where that if you mess up, you'll know it was all you.And if you still don't like how they work, it all can be adjusted like I mentioned earlier. All in all, if your into the next gen. games with a ps3 or 360 and you don't like what the ps2 does, then you might be bothered by what this game has to offer. But if you still have the old ps2 around and haven't been able to move on yet and want the best NBA experience, this game is definitely for you.

I have been a 2k player for many years, I first started playing since 2K5 which was a great game as well. The last two years of NBA 2K have not been anything special, 2K10 felt like a minor leap over 2K9. However that is not the case this year, this game feels like a MAJOR leap over the previous games in the series, which I think most people didn't even think was possible.Graphics: Awesome, don't look at the gameplay videos, that tells a completely different story. When you actually play this game and look at it, the motions are amazing, particularly how the great the equipment on the players move when the characters run down the court. The facial expressions are also amazing, and give you an amazing feeling during highlights. Also the skin tones and the Tattoos all look good, and are placed in the right spot. The only knock on the graphics that I can say is how some of the characters have an unnatural look to them (Jermaine Oneal, Larry Bird, and even Kobe to some extents look weird). The UI and the menu system is very nice though, something 2K games have always been good at. The courts are also done in amazing detail and look good down to the last piece of hardwood floor. There is so much more to be said about the graphics, but its hard to sum it all up, the graphics all around are good I would rate them an 8 out of 10 definitely the best looking in the series. Sound: The sound is solid, the court sounds sound legit, the way the shoes sound during a quick stop and the way the ball sounds as your are dribbling and how it sounds when it goes in the net is perfect. The soundtrack for this game is very good, its definitely improving over the previous years versions and the best so far. You got Snoop, Drake, Big Boi, Cassidy, Kid Cudi, and even Ron Artest (lol). The sound is great, and the play by play is truly amazing. You really think you are watching the game, 2K has always been strong here after playing a couple of matches, I rarely heard the same things said in different games during pick up games, which is amazing. The announcers always have an amazing way in season mode/My Player mode of talking about when the season is coming to an end, and what place your current team is at in their conference which is amazing. They certainly put a lot of time and effort in the play by play which makes the ambience much better.Controls: Not a lot to say here, in one word it's great. If you have used the 2K controls before it will be like second nature here, its very easy for even beginners to pick up and play. After one full match from the beginning to end, you will already have a strong grasp on the controllers. So just solid here, and still one of the best things about 2K basketball games. Gameplay: A game changer, everything feels like its been improved from before. They still have all the legitimate traits of older games before this one. Lebron shoots like lebron, he has his signature shot, and his signature blocks, its scarily realistic with how they made so many players play like themselves. Tons of research had to go in for it to be this accurate. The new thing for this year is the jordan challenges. Believe it or not, this pays homage to the older 2K games. If you play NFL 2K5 (Rip) they had a mode where you can go back and play legendary games and win these game and do what those teams have done. Well, its back now, and you get to use all the amazing Bulls teams from 90's with Jordan. they also recreated all the rosters so that it is the same roster as jordan was with and the teams that he played against. So the challenges are like score 63+, plays his flu game, etc. Its really an amazing thing that they created here for the greatest basketball player of all time. The My Player mode is truly amazing, you start as basically a nobody, you create your character and when you are all finished you choose what kind of player you would like to be (scoring, passing, defensive, etc.) once you do that it assigns point to your player that can be used to build different stats. You start out in the draft combine, be impressive and you get drafted once you do, you start competing in the summer league. From there, now you are fighting for a roster spot, its really amazing and actually shows you the process of what these players have to do when they are coming to the NBA, amazing. Online, I have played about 5 games, and I have to say that its been great! No lag, and there has been no server problems which have been a huge knock on 2K basketball games online, it's looking good so far however.

EDIT 11/26/2010: Yep decided to edit this one, bought it since launch and I am still playing it even now, on black friday and also a month and a half after its release. The rating would not change at all this truly is an amazing game, you must try it for yourself!

Overall: IGN called this game one of the greatest sports games of our generation, and they are right. Nothing really quite matches everything it offers. If you play this game online and offline, you can easily surpass over 100 hours of gameplay before you know it. Throw in Jordan challenges, My player mode, and online in general, and you have a deep game with more to come back to each time you turn it on, THIS is what 2K basketball is all about.

NBA 2K11 Review

NBA 2K11

You may consider this a premature review, but I thought I would share my initial feelings about the game anyways. It really doesn't matter the company, whether 2K or EA, but whenever the yearly edition of your favorite sports game is released, it's painfully obvious that the transition between one year to the next is subtle at best.Thankfully 2K doesn't simply add a new feature and highlight it as EA does year in and out with their games. For NBA 2K11, 2K knew it could not let down the legions of Jordan fanboys and fanatics worldwide by pushing out an inferior product and let me tell you, 2K11 has NOT disappointed me thus far.I received this game approximately 4 hours ago, THANK YOU UPS GUY, and after 4 hours of non-stop play, I am VERY satisfied.I'll attempt to break down what I've seen.

Pros:
1) Michael FREAKING Jordan. His presence is already the showstopper part of the game, but 2K does not simply include him in a "Legendary" team and call it quits. No, Sir.As you've already read, they include him on 10 of his legendary Bulls teams whether to relive his classic moments or to use them against current teams.Another cool feature is the ability to unlock all his Jordan brand shoes where upon wearing them, your player will gain specific stat boosts.

2) Inclusion of other legendary teams. They didn't have to, but they so kindly did.

3) Improved AI.Every year 2K and EA claim they have more life-like AI, this year is different.Basically once you pop the game in the disk you're already playing as a Jordan-led team and the difficulty was on Pro.I noticed immediately that the same passes to cutters will not fly.I played 2K10 on Hall of Fame and those passes were money.Well, not anymore. It takes a lot more know-how and timing to get things right and I couldn't be happier.

4) Buttons and moves.By this I mean 2K tweaked the buttons slightly and it's made things easier in my estimation.Circle no longer sets your picks (rather it is the "fake pass" button), as it's now L1.Pushing L1 calls your screener to get into position and releasing it tells him to roll.Rather than allowing the AI to determine when they should roll allows the player to better gauge what the best play will be.You can call a quick screen so that he simply slows the guy guarding you down and allow you to blow by for a layup or dunk, or you can set an adequate pick-and-roll (that would make Stockton and Malone happy) by allowing your screener to have a head full of steam before getting the ball.Performing moves is a lot easier for me this time around, it's hard to get into detail so you'll have to see for yourself.I say moves are a positive this time around because of the newly added animations allow for more variation when trying to break your defender down.

5) Clear difference between Stars and nobodies. When you're using a superior player and an inferior player guards you, performing moves will easily allow you to "brush your shoulder" of the guy.For instance, if you're using Derrick Rose and Robin Lopez switches to guard you, he's basically screwed.Higher ball skill ratings vs. lower speed means when you do a move against him, he'll be left in the dust. Also, star players definitely shine in this game.If you're using MJ or Kobe, being guarded perfectly doesn't mean your shot will clank.Everybody knows these two make/made impossible shots, as ridiculous as it looks/seems, they did it for real and you can do it in the game.Using Kobe in 2K10 was semi-frustrating because it would've been nice if I could've made some of those difficult shots that he makes in reality, now I can see them drop more often that not.Just my preference that I'd like to see some contested shots go down since some guys can pull it off. Again, you need to see for yourself how clear the difference is now.

6) Improved layout & presentation. You could do without this, but it does look nicer. Presentation looks especially cool, what you'd expect if you were watching a game on ESPN or any other live TV station.Massive improvement here that wasn't necessary but is absolutely a pleasure to have.

7) My Player.A lot of the things here will seem familiar to you, but 2K did add nice features here and there and allow for a more variation when developing your player. The combinations of shots, moves, etc. are endless. This feature was already solid in 2K10, but 2K added some nice little features here and there.

8) Graphics.I think the graphics this year around are fairly crisp and to anybody griping about looks, have you ever considered that maybe companies have already maxed out on how great these games can look?1080p is basically the standard and if it doesn't look as good as you think it should be, try getting an LED tv and then get back to me.

Cons:
1) Same announcers, but they did add some new one liners.Either way, playing two games successively means you hear them rant about the same things.I don't think any game developer is willing to pay two new guys to announce their games every year.

2) I have not encountered any bugs thus far, but I suppose with more playing I'll see something? (SEE UPDATE)

Conclusion:
I think when word got out how amazing 2K11 was, EA finally accepted what they already knew. They were pushing out an inferior product year after year. It's never been more obvious this year as EA delayed their interpretation of basketball by 5 (FIVE!) months. If anybody even tried their demo, I don't blame them.Frankly, I'd get this game just for the Jordan factor... but I thank 2K Sports for merely letting his presence be an attention grabber while letting their actual game do the talking.Whether you're a 2K or Live/Elite fanboy, you really owe it to yourself to get this game.2K didn't have to add a lot of the stuff that they did, but they did so anyways because they really wanted to prove to people that they've mastering their craft with dedication and thought.I hope that anybody who reads this review got something out of it because ever since popping the game in, I really felt the need for everyone else out there to see what I saw.If you have any questions or think I'm talking out of my ass, please let me know! And in the future, don't let EA sell you on their Great Balls of Fire (NBA JAM) to buy their games!Quality will always win out against HYPE!

UPDATE 9/10/10
The more and more I play this game, the more I am impressed. The emphasis this year around was actually SIMULATION of basketball. This is why so many casual gamers are upset, because they can't simply pick up the controller and score 50 with any star player as they'd hope.As good as those players are in real life, it's still insanely hard to pull it off on any given night, as it is in the game as well.
Year in and year out, the AI is ALWAYS a big issue. Game reviewers and connoisseurs, like myself and I'm sure many of you, always complain about the simpleton computer.Hall of Fame is NEVER a challenge....... until NOW.I read a review somewhere else on Amazon, complaining about how hard it was to score and how 2K made the game worse. These complaints are RIDICULOUS because the guy clearly didn't know what this game's about.

However, I've seen a few things that annoyed me.
1) Throwing hail mary passes don't work when you're doing them, but the computer can underhand a hail mary pass directly the guy down court.
2) Where are the Kobe shoes?
3) The new dunk contest.I preferred last year's version, though I'm glad that Sprite guy who announces it is gone.

These little things bug me, but the game is otherwise flawless.Game play is authentic and the animations are amazing.
My advice to anybody in the market for a basketball game is that, know what you're purchasing before you buy it.If you want some fantasy game where you can do whatever the hell you like and score a million points, you can purchase a copy of Live 2001-forseeable future or even a pre NBA 2K-11 2K game. This is the finest sports SIMULATION game ever and with that said, you cannot seriously expect to have things be handed to you when playing this.NBA 2K11 is meant for basketball purists who want the most authentic experience playing their favorite sport in virtual reality.Performing moves, running plays, making shots, etc.everything requires attention to detail and an ability to survey the situation at hand... as your favorite baller would in real life.
