What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!? 2 Review

What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord 2

I haven't used my PSP in a long time, but after reading about this game I decided to take a chance.I ordered the game, plugged in my PSP to charge and waited for Amazon's next day delivery. When the time came I was blown away! The graphics take me back to late 80's and early 90's, the game play keeps me glued to the PSP, and the game's humor takes the cake! The game is like tower defense and a mini life simulator rolled into one.Now these two genres alone are worn out, but with both combined with this kind of style and humor, this game is a winner.

You are an evil god summoned to build a dungeon and create the evil monsters that inhabit the dungeon. What makes this fun is the way the game mechanics work. You smash the blocks to build the rooms and halls and by hitting certain blocks you release the lower forms of the food chain, they combine and multiply and spread out to "infect" other blocks that allow you to create the next tier of the food chain. The next tier feeds off the tier below it and they multiply and so on.However, you can't just start destroying blocks willy nilly, you have to plan out the design and keep the wide open spaces to a minimum. There is a monster almanac in the game that keeps up with what monsters you have created along with little stories and humorous bits.As you are building out the dungeon waves of heroes come in and try to wipe out your minions and capture the head honcho "Badman", the guy that you work for. There are training scenarios, challenge levels, and a story mode.

PLUS, you get both the first and second game all on one disk if you buy the UMD, they are sold separately if you download the game via Sony's store. The first game can be accessed by pressing L then R five times at the main screen. L,R,L,R,L,R,L,R,L,R.If you play through the first game before starting the second you unlock extra levels in the second version.

Bottom line, if you like old Dungeon Keeper game, tower defense, life simulators, nostalgic graphics, and snarky "I don't take myself too seriously" humor from a game, you will absolutely LOVE this game.I cannot put it down!

The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon Review

The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a little nervous when I read that a new company would be taking over the Legend of Spyro trilogy to produce this final installment, Dawn of the Dragon. Unlike many reviewers, I prefer this remake over the original Spyro games, because, being a fan of epic fantasy, I enjoy that the game is more mature and mirrors many great fantasy sagas before it, even if this means that the plot is rather predictable.
Dawn of the Dragon begins where The Eternal Night left off, with Spyro, his dragonfly companion Sparx, and former nemesis Cynder trapped in the crystal where Spyro froze them after his battle with Gaul. They are soon freed, and the final quest in the Legend of Spyro trilogy begins. Spyro and Cynder must team up with a host friends and allies, from cheetah warriors to dragon guardians, to defeat Malefor, the Dark Master, who plans to end the world and recreate it as his kingdom of evil.
This game is visually fascinating, with beautiful scenery that illustrates the mood of the game, from the lush meadows of Twilight Falls to the ominous Burned Lands where Malefor resides. This, coupled with an engaging and epic score, sets a sweeping mood of the game and creates a rich fantasy world that I found very exciting to interact with.
The gameplay of Dawn of the Dragon is similar to that of the previous two Legend of Spyro titles, with Spyro controlling the four elements of Fire, Ice, Earth, and Electricity, each of which can be upgraded so that the player can perform a variety of interesting elemental attacks. The game also introduces co-op play with Cynder, who is also given four upgradeable elements: Poison, Wind, Shadow, and Fear. Besides these attacks, the two heroes can also engage in numerous melee combo attacks to battle foes.
Like many reviewers, I agree that, despite the variety of attacks, combat can sometimes become repetitive, with multiple hordes of enemies that seem to have the miraclous ability to continually regenerate. The Burned Lands level particularly irked me, because it seemed I could walk no more than a few feet before I was suddenly enclosed by towering walls and trapped in a swath of enemies with few health and energy crystals to aid me in battle.
That being said, some sections of combat were very exciting and enjoyable. Once you get into the rhythm of the battle, it can often be satisfying to rotate between the four elements at Spyro and Cynder's disposal and watch as you dispose of one foe after another. The boss battle in Dragon City, where Spyro and Cynder are pitted against a towering servant of the Dark Master known as a Golem, is one of my favorites, because the precise timing in combat makes it very challenging and exciting.
Certain parts of the game became irritating after a while, especially the level where Spyro and Cynder are given the task to slay a colossal monster known as the Destroyer by flying around and destroying the dark crystals which power it. Because of limited camera movement, these crystals were difficult to locate, and it soon became more of an annoying chore than a puzzle. The end of that sequence, however, where the two dragons must fly into the monster to destroy the last of the crystals, is both visually fascinating and thrilling.
This brings me to the flying, a new addition to the Spyro franchise. Both dragons are given the ability to take to the air whenever they please, which is very useful when attempting to cross chasms or battling airborne foes. Many reviewers have complained about how the game will often keep you from flying as high as you wish, which limits the game's freedom. Well, what did you expect? That the game would simply let you dash all around wherever you wanted without any limits? Ha! This is a video game, which means that there have to be limits to everything to keep gameplay controlled. Personally, I found flight very enjoyable and airborne combat also extremely engaging and exciting. Overall, it was a great addition to the series.
In summary, Dawn of the Dragon has some faults, but I think that it is a solid conclusion to the Legend of Spyro trilogy. With an epic score and visuals, decent combat, and many enhancing abilities, this game is a very good addition to the platforming genre and the entire Spyro franchise.

Innocent Life: A Futuristic Harvest Moon Special Edition Review

Innocent Life: A Futuristic Harvest Moon Special Edition
Average Reviews:

I was shocked to realize that I had missed an installment of the Harvest Moon universe so I had to pick up Innocent Life. While it is very different from the other harvest moon games, the differences are interesting enough to keep you captivated.

The controls take a while to get used to.Mainly select is triangle instead of X except when you're getting into storage boxes...then it's O for some weird reason.

The story is good: Save the Island from blowing up.No biggie.

What I liked was not being confined to the town anymore. There is a whole island to explore and you get a dune buggy and tent to do it with! There are even a sort "dungeons" with small puzzles to solve to advance through.

What I didn't like was you don't have to take care of your animals other than brushing them...and even then you don't really have to do that.Animals take a huge backseat in this game...they're almost pointless really.I also hated the Bas&ket Rail system.(yeah that's how it's spelled)It's supposed to work like a train set...I could never make it work well enough to justify using, but that could just be me.

All in all it's a great game.Different from all the other harvest moons by far, but still a good game in your own right.I think it's a nice addition and a breath of fresh air to farming life!

Tekken Tag Tournament Review

Tekken Tag Tournament
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tekken Tag Tournament has both pros and cons, but it is the best fighting game out now.
Graphics 4.999999 out of 5
Pro- Great Graphics, with the background being some of the best that I have seen. The jaggies that plagued the Japanese version has all been anti-aliased and the characters look as smooth as hell.
Con-The characters look good, but they also look like plastic G.I.JOES and loses the good anime-ish quality of the arcade characters.
Gameplay 5 out of 5
Pro-massive number of characters with unique styles for everyone.Tag juggles have almost infinite possibilities.Very deep system of play with different stamina for characters, reversals, the ability to reverse reversals, parries, universal low parries, and sidesteps that can actually avoid moves offer a lot of fun and practice.Very few characters that a beginner can mash and win against an intermediate player.
Con- Basically, it has the same engine as tekken 3, except for the tag. Some Tekken2 characters lost out in the transition from T2 to TTT.aka Jun and Wang
Music 4.3 out of 5
Pro and con- the music fits with the stages, but nothing memorable or horrible.Namco should have kept the arcade tracks or made it so that you can select them as an option.
Sound 4.8 out of 5
Pro and Con- Sounds are all great, and fits with everything.
Features 4.9 out of 5
Pros- has practice mode, 1 on 1 arcade, 2 vs 2, bowling mode, Survival mode, time attack, and team battle.
New features for US TTT include 1 on 1 vs mode, fixed damage counter in practice mode, and a very easy to use moves recording mode.Endings look very good.
Cons-Endings at a bit short and throws the tekken storyline out of wack(even though Namco said TTT had no storyline).
Overall5 out of 5
Get this game if you like fighters and isn't sick of Tekken 3.It is simply the best out there right now.DOA2 and Soul Caliber are good, but TTT is the GOD of fighting games.

Skate Review

Skate
Average Reviews:

A new series, walking into the mouth of a lion, skate is one of the most innovative and fresh games in the genera.A new control scheme paired with amazingly detailed graphics and challenging game play make for a sure buy if you're a fan of any extreme game series.

First and foremost, if you have a obsessive personality or are a perfectionist stay away from this game, because you'll not be getting any sleep. For everyone else the new flickit controls have a very hard learning curve, but after 15 minutes you should get the hang of it.A few problems with the controls plague this game, its super frustrating to hit the tiniest bump and have your skater turn around in the opposite direction but this is minor in a sea full of awesome.

The story doesn't have a lot of variety but what it does have is entertaining and enough to keep you going to the end.

Overall a solid game with room for great improvement that will leave it on the top of the ramp compared to everything else in the long run.Go pick this up if you've enjoyed other skating games, or if you want to try something new that will leave you having great times for a long time.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Review

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Simply put: this game is incredible.I've played RPGs for years, but I've never had a more seamless experience than I've had playing this game.

First, the training mission.I didn't even realize it was a training mission because the events happening around me were directly related to the overall plot of the game. The only notion I had that the game was actually training me was the occasional on-screen message to press this or that button, but those messages didn't appear until I really wanted to do the action they taught me.

Second, the graphics. This world is gorgeous.I've found mysef just wandering through fields looking at the sights because of the level of detail and beauty -- the EFFORT -- that was put into the game. The sun rises and sets, the clouds pass by overhead, birds and animals react to my presence. It's a joy just taking it all in.

Finally, however, the gameplay. This game is fun.I can advance in whatever skill set I want simply based on whatever I use.If I want to become skilled at using a bow, then I just use the bow all the time, and I get better at it.If I want to be a powerful mage, I just keep casting magic, and I'll get better at it.The NPCs lead their own lives, talking and wandering around whether I interact with them or not.I can just stand around in a pub and listen in on the conversations around me, and I'll learn so much about what's going on in the realm.

This game raises RPGs to a whole new level -- a level that, as an old-school D&D player, I've been waiting to experience within a computer game for years.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West Review

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is a game that has been on my radar for some time now.Not only is it one of the only non sequel or non remakes of Q4, but it's a story driven game. The game actually has a writer who is known for such movies as The Beach and 28 Days Later. Not too shabby, especially in the video game world. So, it's to be expected that I was really excited about this game, the story buff (in video games at least) that I am.Did Enslaved live up to it's high hopes during the first few hours of gameplay or is this game destined for B game bargain bins?Read on to find out in my first impression.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West takes place about 200 years or so after a nuclear holocaust in the United States.Vegetation is beginning to overtake structures and the world is beautiful in a despairing kind of way.You play as Monkey, a strong brute of a man who was captured by slavers and stored on a slave ship.In transit to wherever it is they were taking you, a girl breaks out of her cell and continues to sabotage the ship in her hasty attempt to get free and sets you loose. The ship is coming down and you need to make it to an escape pod. After some platforming, you eventually make it to the last escape pod, which is taken by the girl who caused the commotion. You hold on for dear life to the escape pod as she ejects and you land in a desolate NYC years after a nuclear war. Upon awaking, you find that the girl, named Trip, has fitted you with a slave headband that shocks you if you don't do her will. She can issue commands to you and you must do them for her.If she dies, you also die.So Monkey is a rough spot, but Trip isn't bad.She did this because she knows she would never get home without Monkeys brute strength. Her proposition to him, take her 300 miles to the west to her sanctuary village made by her father and she'll remove the collar. With no choice in the matter, Monkey agrees and the two set off on their Odyssey to the West.

And with that, Enslaved begins. The opening sequence is very epic and the graphics in the game are some of the best I have seen on the 360 this side of Gears of War 2.If you aren't familiar, the game is actually loosely based on Journey to the West, an old Chinese story that is apparently pretty popular in the UK due to some tv shows about it.I wasn't familiar with it until I googled it.Regardless, you don't need to know about the book to enjoy the game. They use some of the same names and try to leave subtle clues to the book, but it's really a different beast altogether.

The story so far is top notch and I'm really excited to see how Monkey and Trip make it to the west, but there are other things besides story in a game.Namely, gameplay. The gameplay is sort of reminiscent of a platformer like Prince of Persia. There's a lot of climbing and swinging, but at the same time combat plays a huge roll. You're going to be doing a lot of computer AI co-op to outsmart enemy mech's, the games most prevalent enemy. For instance, Monkey is the strength, Trip the brains. In one scenario, Monkey needs to make it across a huge area to take out an automated turret, less they be shredded to bits. So, Trip uses her armband to create an electronic diversion that draws their fire. That leaves you to circle around flank the enemy. In doing so, you rip the arm off the mech and use it to finish off the remaining turrets. But, the path you took here required a lot of jumping and swinging, something Trip can't do.You need to go back and carry her on your back across hazardous areas and throw her to places she can't jump to.At first, I thought it would be a pain in the ass, but I found I enjoy the times you have to carry her.During these times is when the next thing I loved about the game begins to shine...

The talking between the two characters is key in the game. You never know when it will start or end, but they talk a lot. It's in these times you learn the stories of the two travelers and what worlds they come from.Without spoiling anything, they come from two totally different backgrounds so relating is a little rough.Their banter is almost flirty in some regards so if you're into the chemistry between two co-op partners, you'll enjoy this portion of the game.I found it refreshing and a nice diversion. The world around them is crumbling but they have each other in rough times.

I already mentioned it but the graphics are amazing. The vistas and backdrops are truly breathtaking, especially when your ship crashes in the beginning.Take a long look at the NYC skyline and be sure to keep your jaw from hitting the floor. It's amazing and a true sight to see in a video game.Plus, this is a post apocalyptic game that isn't brown. How many games are out there that automatically equate post apocalyptic with brown, but in reality, after the fallout (if any) the world would be overtaken by nature. It's nice to see this in a game.

So far, I haven't had many complaints about the game.If I had to point out anything I'd say that maybe the gameplay could get repetitive, but that's just me trying to find gripes where none exist. There's an upgrade system that Trip performs that allows you to learn new combat options and new moves (as well as health and shields) that have the ability to keep things fresh. If you like platformers though, you already know how those games can get after a solid gaming marathon. It's something that comes with the territory, but most good platformers get around this by having varied level design, which Enslaved has in spades.

So, should you buy this game?Depends...do you like platformers that have heavy combat and some stealth scenarios? If so, I'd say yes.How about story?I'm a sucker for a good story in a game so this one was a no brainer.Enslaved could be a rent if you aren't too thrilled on the idea of platforming but be sure not to miss it.This has the possibility of being a sleeper hit of 2010.It won't compete in sales with the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games, but it's a new IP in a world of sequels and remakes.Give it a shot so we can tell the industry we want to see new games, not just sequels.

Cradle of Rome Review

I have 7 Wonders on DS and it was previously my favorite game. This has far surpassed that!It is similar to 7 Wonders in that you have to line up 3 matching "symbols" to clear blocks. The difference with Cradle of Rome is that there seems to be more of a goal rather than just endlessly matching tiles. In this game there are food, resources, and gold tiles which when you clear you collect to help you build your city. There are also many more bonuses and extras that help you to clear rounds and build your city.Overall it is very fun and not too hard nor too easy.I have been playing it non stop since I got it. I think the replay value on this is good as well.If you liked 7 Wonders or similar game I would highly recommend this!

Shadow of the Colossus Review

Shadow of the Colossus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Shadow of the Colossus is one of those all-too-rare titles that defies easy description and doesn't really fit comfortably into any existing genre. Is it an action game?Yes.Adventure?Sure.Puzzle?Yep.Platformer?Yeah.It even has slight horror elements.

On the surface, Shadow sounds simple:search for the colossus, find its weak spot, and stab it.Sounds easy enough, but that's like saying that To Kill a Mockingbird is a legal drama, or Platoon is about the Vietnam War - it's not the whole story.Even Shadow's story - boy wants to save girl - slowly reveals itself to be something much more complex and mysterious.

Where Shadow excels is in its design.Finding each colossus requires travel through a landscape that can only be described as dreamlike, yet it feels real. You'll seamlessly travel from a cliff overlooking a river to a thick forest, and then you could find yourself in the middle of a desert or at the edge of a lake.Since the land is so vast (and, besides the colossi, relatively uninhabited), you travel by horseback, courtesy of Agro, perhaps the best-animated animal character ever seen in a game.Controlling Agro is initially complex, yet intuitive, and thankfully his A.I. is sophisticated enough to keep you from riding him off the edge of a mountain. You're armed with only a sword and bow (with unlimited arrows), and there's no way to upgrade your weaponry. The real upgrade lies in the learned experience of defeating each of the colossi hidden in the valleys and mountains.

Each colossus is haunting, fantastic, ominous, and awe-inspiring, and there's even a slight sense of innocence.I won't go into specifics because the sense of wonder and discovery is vital to the gameplay, but if you avoid walkthroughs and spoilers (and you certainly should) you will constantly be surprised at each one.Defeating them requires careful thinking, experimentation, and trial-and-error, and there's not always one way to achieve victory.Just as the brilliant bosses of the Gamecube's two Metroid Prime games demanded quick thumbs and quick wits, the colossi are masterfully imagined, rendered, and designed, and get more complex as you progress. They had to be, as the game is basically sixteen boss battles.Still, there's nothing like the rush of finally discovering the key to each beast, but that's only part of the battle, as you then have to put your plan into action.Simply put, the colossi are some of the most cinematic and exhilirating experiences in gaming, and each one is unique and memorable.

If you have a PS2 and want something challenging, beautiful, and unlike anything else you've played before, Shadow of the Colossus is an absolute must. It's an instant candidate for Game of the Year, and should at the very least get recognition for its design.Games like this don't come along often - enjoy it.
