Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Review

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this Xbox HD-DVD player for almost a month now and so far it works just great. I actually had no plans to buy either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD until one of those losers became a dominate player. Unfortunately it doesn't look like that's going to happen any time soon. And for $200, I couldn't pass it up since I already had an Xbox. And I couldn't bring myself to keep buying low-def regular DVD's with these awesome HD DVD's out there. AND, the HD DVD combo discs still have regular DVD content for normal DVD players in other rooms in the house.

Out of the box, this drive is extremely easy to setup. Just pop in the setup CD, plug it in, and you're ready to go. There is a separate power cord as well. The included remote is nice, but I'll stick with my Harmony 880. It's able to control all the basic functions of the player. The player is also unable take advantage of the improved audio quality of HD-DVD, so you just get the normal "good" audio quality you had with previous DVD's. Which isn't bad, but still somewhat disappointing. Otherwise, all the menu's work nicely, the player starts up fairly quick, and the picture quality is awesome - for component video at least.

Component is probably the biggest negative I can think of - and that's really due to the Xbox 360's fault, not the player itself. If you think HD DVD looks good on your xbox component connection in 1080i, just wait until you see it via your HDMI port in 1080i or even 1080p (if your TV accept 1080p and is big enough to take advantage of such a high res). Unfortunately, there is no word of HDMI for the xbox. So you only get 1080i via the Component connection. To get 1080p, you need the VGA cable, which has a somewhat better picture.

So I bought the VGA cable. The picture does look a little better on my 61' Samsung HL-S6187W since it's also at 1080p, but there is a 1-3" border around the screen, and the image is tilted. Samsung had no idea how to fix it. But I suspected that might happen since a TV with a VGA port is still a TV, not a PC Monitor. Your results will of course vary depending on your model TV.

The VGA port limitations aren't that big of a deal. If you REALLY want 1080p, you just need HDMI - period. I'll live with 1080i via Component for now until the 1080p players come down in price. In the meantime, at least I've got some awesome looking HD movies to watch on my new TV!

Pros:
* Cheapest HD-DVD solution if you have an XBox 360
* Easy to setup
* Accepts IR from your universal remote via the Xbox
* Great picture quality
* Includes Microsoft Remote and free King-Kong HD-DVD
* UPDATE: HDMI Output (with Xbox 360 Elite Only)

Cons:
* Only outputs 1080i via Component (VGA required for 1080p)
* VGA output has limitations, both due to Xbox and/or your TV
* Can't take advantage of HD-DVD improved audio quality formats

Bottom line, if you have an Xbox 360, and have a HD TV, you've gotta pick one of these up. You just can't go wrong for a $200 entry-level HD player!

*** ELITE/HDMI UPDATE ***

Just purchased the Xbox 360 Elite w/ HDMI. This HD DVD player is even more awesome than before. We just watched the entire Matrix Trilogy in HD DVD in 1080p on the 61" Samsung DLP - and it looked awesome. When compared to component, the HDMI picture is much more crisp, detailed, and even better black levels. Definately recommended!

This game is great if you like racing and blood and gore.In this game you can either use a controler,or the keyboard. There are 3 way of completing a level(each set is called a group)by killing all peds.,wasting all the cars,or going through all the check points(or lap)a certent amount of times. You have a lot of cars and when you get the right amount of credits you can the one you want, but only if you find it in the race your racing. You nave boxs and a type of barrel filled with either a power-up or something that happens to your car, peds.,or your oppenets. The red box has something to do with the people running around that you hit(be sure to get drunk peds. cause thats the funnest). The barrels have to do with your car.I don't know how many levels there are since I haven't completed it.You should try it.

Product Description:
Amazon.co.uk ReviewLead your Samurai warriors once more in Shogun Total War: The Mongol Invasion Add-On Pack for Shogun Total War. As before your task is to command thousands of loyal samurai and other troops against warring factions in massive battles that will determine the fate of Japan itself. Keeping true to the original game, this add-on pack offers four new campaigns and four new strategy map scenarios to take you straight into the action. The main thing you'll notice is the addition of the Mongolians to battle against as they try to invade Japan in the 13th century. Of course with any addition of a new race in a game comes a host of battlefield units to get to grips with and additions like the Mongolian Cavalry make for a gruelling challenge. Rather than just adding a new race and new challenges to conquer, EA have tinkered with the AI giving the gameplay a more balanced approach as well as improving the interface and presentation of the whole game overall. If you're looking to put a new lease of life into what is essentially a very good game then this will certainly do the trick. --Jason Denwood Manufacturer's DescriptionLet the battle begin! Feudal Japan is under attack from invading Mongol hordes in the official expansion pack for Shogun: Total Warlords. The new enemy threatens to destroy the country and offers a completely new style of gameplay with the focus on pillaging the Japanese landscape (rather than building). The Mongol Invasion pack will also offer an array of new and improved features to reintroduce players to the original Shogun title that delivered a revolutionary style of gameplay through its epic size battles, giving players command of thousands of warriors, each with their own unique Artificial Intelligence (AI) and fighting to unify Japan under their own powerful warlord.

Command & Conquer 3 Deluxe Edition Review

Command & Conquer 3 Deluxe Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well what can I say, this game is excellent.Like all of the Command and Conquer games, the campaign mode, for all three factions, is fun and addictive. The skirmish mode allows you to extend the life of the game beyond the campaigns, but if you are like myself, you will find yourself wanting to download more maps to make things more interesting.I was very impressed with the risk like, campaign map on the Kane's Wrath add on.The only downside I can think of for this game, is the difficulty in creating ones own maps and editing the game stats. The world builder program is difficult to use, compared to the map editors available for previous C&C titles.Overall the game play is excellent, the graphics are amazing and the campaign mode on it's own, with the all star cast, makes the game well worth the money.

Wii 2000 Points Card Review

Wii 2000 Points Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First things first: the Wii Points Card allows you to purchase classic video games from the NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, and Turbo Grafix 16 consoles and download them onto your Wii console.Nintendo has many great old games available already and is adding more regularly (generally about once a week).

Basic information:100 Wii Points roughly equals 1 dollar. You should never pay more for a Wii Points card because you can buy the points directly from Nintendo at a rate of 100 to the dollar. On the flip side if you can get these cards cheaper (and sometimes you can buy them at a bit of a discount) you get a great deal.

What's available:There are new games being released all the time.I have a wishlist a mile long for these games, but some of my favorites include Zelda, the original Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Donkey Kong Country, Golden Axe, Super Mario Brothers and Super Mario World, and Mario 64.Again--almost every week there's something new.A current list is available on Nintendo's website.

Game Cost:The cost for classic games varies a little but is fairly uniform.NES games start at 500 points (at this time there is only one game that I'm aware of for the NES that costs more). Most Super NES, Genesis, and TG 16 games cost around 800 points, and N64 games run about 1000.Considering a nostalgia trip used to sometimes cost as much as the original game (the original Zelda used to run about $50, and that's if you had an old Nintendo to run it on) these games are a great deal.

Why buy the card?: I purchase most of my points directly from Nintendo without using these cards. So what purpose do they serve?Simple--they're great for gifts.I love that these come in 2000 point increments--it means my friends and family have a cheap gift idea for me and can give me something I'll really enjoy rather than trying to pick out a game for me themselves. And of course if you've got a gift card or discount for your favorite retailer you can pick them up cheaper. It's a great alternative to just buying the points on your Wii.

Overall this is a great way to get your hands on some classic games. You may prefer to buy them directly on the Wii (as I do), but keep this option in mind when special occasions roll around and people are asking what to get you!

Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour Expansion Pack Review

Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although Generals added a new standard of graphics and several new and interesting departures from the original C&C game design, it was something less than revolutionary. Zero Hour goes a long way toward addressing this issue, and really turns Generals into a completely new game.
The expansion adds a new campaign for each side, with about 5 missions each. The campaign is interesting, and adds a few new elements, but is actually not the best part of the expansion. There are full motion video cutscenes (reporters talking about what's going on) to add some depth to the story, which is pretty straightforward stuff that could happen sometime in the near future (though we hope not). The missions add unique buildings and locations, all well done, as well as objectives that are pretty fun to carry out. Some of them are quite difficult, and there are a few stealth commando missions that Generals sadly lacked. There's also some campaign-only powers, such as the ability to call in battleship artillery and carrier strikes in one of the USA missions.
The real meat of the expansion starts with the new units and upgrades. Each side has new things, some of which go a long way toward filling holes in the armies' capabilities. China, for example, gets some much-needed surveillance by way of the Internet Center, and a worthwhile stealth detector in the Listening Post. Frenzy, a new general power, increases the firepower and armor of units for a brief time. China also gets added airborne firepower with the Helix and the ability to carpet bomb. The GLA gets several low-tech solutions, most of which are still geared toward outmaneuvering rather than outgunning the opposition. The Battle Bus, however, can pack quite a punch in a frontline role. Fake structures, a sometimes-useful throwback from Red Alert, can also be purchased. More interestingly, they can be upgraded into real ones, which is a nice way to play with an opponent's mind. The USA gets a powerful base defense with the Fire Base, which is garrisonable, effective against infantry, and doesn't need power to shoot. They also get a mobile anti-air unit in the Avenger, making it unnecessary for you to bring weak Missile Defender-packed Humvees along in future battles. Three new tech structures are also added- the Repair Bay (repairs all your ground units), Artillery Platform (shoots at enemies with a howitzer), and Reinforcement Pad (produces a tank on a countdown).
The upgrades and units are standard expansion fare, but Zero Hour adds something else- new generals, each with their own combat styles, units and powers, and personalities. There are three for each side- Air Force, Lasers, and Superweapons for the USA; Toxins, Camouflage, and Demolitions for the GLA; and Nukes, Tanks, and Infantry for China. Each of these has a doctrine that you must adhere to if you wish to use them effectively, and have weaknesses that hold you to it. For example, the US Air Force general cannot make tanks, but has aircraft cost reduced, unique and better air units, and a point defense laser on all airplanes that along with the standard countermeasures upgrade makes them practically immune to missile fire. China's tank general can build the Emperor Overlord, which is the newest and baddest vehicle on the ground. The GLA camouflage general can make literally everything invisible to the unaided eye, and turns the GLA into a real guerilla army (his Scud Storms are especially scary). All of these generals can be used in skirmish or multiplay, and there is a special 'generals challenge' campaign in which you pick one and play against all others. Your opponent is always on territory that favors their doctrine, and it can get pretty tough. This is a great way to accustom yourself to the various generals and pick your favorite, and is also quite fun since your opponents continuously taunt you during the games.
It's worth mentioning that several nice tweaks have been added to the engine. For example, fighters on an airbase will automatically attack nearby enemies, and both superweapons and scouting powers (e.g. radar van scans) appear as a sidebar icon with a number indicating how many are ready, if it's more than one. This makes it no longer necessary to separately hotkey practically every unit you have. Multiplayer options have been added, such as how much cash to start with, and no superweapons. The already excellent graphics have been improved, with even more fantastic fireballs, flotsam and jetsam, and better water effects. The result is undoubtedly the most graphically appealing RTS out there, though you might need a new video card if you want to run at max detail.
In summary, Zero Hour is for all intents and purposes a completely new game. Some have argued that it is what Generals should have been from the start, but I'm glad EA took the time to do a good job on this rather than rushing it for release. I honestly have no complaints about the expansion- it's one of the best ones I've seen for any game. It's a definite must for any Generals fan, and even if you weren't overly impressed with Generals, Zero Hour might just change your opinion.

F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon Review

F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
FEAR is one of the best FPSs I have played in a while on any system. To start, the game play in FEAR is fast, furious, and most importantly fun.FEAR is an extremely fast paced game. There is constant stream of surprisingly intelligent enemies putting up their best efforts to kill you.And if it was not for the extremely useful slo-mo feature, they would succeed much more often than not.Slo-mo may seem so 1999 but the fact still remains that it is freakin cool in this game.Slow motion enables the player to move at roughly 2x the speed of the enemies, thus gaining an extremely useful edge in combat, or even retreat.

Also in you arsenal are a series of perfectly designed weapons.Every single weapon has its place throughout the game; all the way from the pistol to the rocket launcher. This is not DOOM where you start at the guns with the highest number on the number pad.Every weapon is balanced perfectly and has positives and negatives so there is no super weapon. And following along with the somewhat realist aspect of Halo the player can only hold 3 guns plus an assortment of grenades (proximity, frag, and remote).

Also HALO like is the close quarters combat. The player can bludgeon with the but of a weapon, do a spin attack, a jump attack and a diving attack. All of these attacks so some significant damage. However these moves are more suited towards multiplayer combat as opposed to single player where the tactics are more suited towards staying back and picking the enemies off.

FEAR is also one freaky game. And this is coming from one who sees horror movies and haunted houses as more as jokes. There were multiple times i just went oh @&^$! and jittered a bit.The horror aspects in this game are superbly implemented both through freighting visuals and terrifying audio.

Now to FEARs weakest point: level design. This is where the FEAR team should have taken some lessons from the beautifully laid out corridors of Half Life 2. The levels in FEAR just seem so bland and repetitive.I see the same objects, color palette, and walls all throughout the game (the parking garage segment is a welcome exclusion though).Where the masterfully designed levels of Half Life seem like living and breathing places with realistically places objects, FEAR just seems like a concrete maze with some computers and windows thrown in for good measure. The levels in FEAR just do not seem real.I the middle of a underground bunker there is placed a lone cubicle with a phone and a computer. (???) This seems so fake.Another game that exemplifies excellent level design is SWAT4.There are random, everyday objects placed throughout the levels to make them seem more real; magazines, soda can, papers, all kinds of everyday stuff that goes unnoticed.

Now on to the beautiful, but taxing graphics of FEAR.This is one good looking game, if you have the right system.Yeah, you can run this game on low setting, but it looks horrible.Even on my GeForce 6800 Ultra I can usually only run safely on medium settings. And the time demo used to test settings is completely inaccurate compared to real game play. But with everything turned on high this game looks STUNNING.However, for most it will be a stunning slide show on the majority of computers.

The multiplayer composed of FEAR is a nice addition, but is not the main focus of the game.Once again the poor level design comes into play here and on most maps is seems as if you are a bunch of rats fighting in a maze. The map featured in the multi player demo is one of my favorite maps due to its uniqueness. The slow motion in multiplayer is also integrated very nicely with one person, or team holding the slow motion activator that slowly recharges.

Overall, download both the single and multi player FEAR demos to get a taste of what to expect. In general the full game follows the demo experience pretty closely (the full game is hella more scary though and even has some performance enhancements) FEAR is not a HALO or Half Life 2 killer but it is pretty close up there,it is defiantly a game worth buying. The Directors edition even has some insightful extras. It some good stuff.Just go get it.

Toshiba / Samsung TS-H943 Replacement DVD Disc Drive for Xbox 360 Review

Toshiba / Samsung TS-H943 Replacement DVD Disc Drive for Xbox 360
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To everyone that's buying this and it only reads movies etc but does not play games. YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS. Either you can flash the firmware for the circuit board inside the new drive , OR you can do the easier task and just take the circuit board out of your old drive and swap it with the one in your new drive. Then there is no need to flash. Just make sure you keep your old drive and take it apart and get the board disconnected from it. Once you take off the four screws and remove the cover on the old CD ROM Drive , the green PC board is right there. There is like 4 ribbon cables to remove and then its a direct replacement and fit into your new drive. Remember you have to also take out the green board in your new drive and swap it with the one in your old drive so you will have one worthless pc board from this new drive that you can not use. If you choose to flash the new board with the same coding from your old drive then it will give you two usable green boards so you will have a spare from your old drive. The mechanical parts on these cd roms are whats failing , not the pc boards inside them. Its much easier to swap the green boards than it is to flash IMO. The reason you change the boards is because the green board from your old cd rom drive has a coded serial key thats unique to your xbox360. Thats why this cd rom without the green board changed only plays movies and not games until you do this.

Space Rangers 2: The Rise of the Dominators Review

Space Rangers 2: The Rise of the Dominators
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[last updated 11/03/06]: Note that Space Rangers 2 (SR2) is now available without copy protection [...] Instead, they use the same approach that they use for Galactic Civilizations II. I can only hope this means that updates for SR2 will be released.

By conventional wisdom, Space Rangers 2 (SR2) shouldn't be such a great game. After all, it contains a mixture of widely disparate game types:

-- 2-D turn-based space travel, including ship-to-ship combat;
-- 3-D ground-based real-time-strategy (RTS) combat among robots, with the ability to 'step into' one of your robots and control it personally;
-- 2-D 1980s arcade-style (real time) travel and combat set in a stylized "hyperspace" within a black hole;
-- text-based "choose your adventure"-style quests and challenges, some of which are quite tough.

All of this exists in a setting of sixty (60) star systems, with over 250 planets, space stations, and the like. You play a single character, of a given race (five available) and starting profession (also five available)--and you pretty much take it from there. There are another 50 or so non-player rangers zooming around the game universe in their own ships and pursuing their own paths and inclinations, as well as lots of traders, diplomats, pirates--and the dread Dominators.

And you know what? SR2 is a blast. In fact, as noted above, the longer you play, the more fun it gets. Part of that comes from increased personal skill; part comes from your character's development (not to mention your ship's development); and part comes from realizing that you're not in a "railroad game" (to use the term my friend Wayne Holder coined over 20 years ago), but that you really are free to choose any number of paths and find any number of approaches.

You can trade, gather asteroid fragments, explore planets (simple and a bit dull), hunt pirates, be a pirate, fight the robotic Dominators that are seeking to enslave humanity, or even try to get on their good side. You can trick out your ship, upgrade or swap out components, catch diseases, take various stimulants, pay for military campaigns against the Dominators, get loans, or even get a race-change operation (a good move if you've become too unpopular).

You're also free to suffer the consequences of what you do, which is why frequent game saves are a good idea. It's easy to die; it's not that hard to wipe yourself out financially; and it's even possible to get most of the known universe upset with you, as I did, inadvertanly in one game (the moral is, be careful when accepting a mission to track down and destroy another ship--some such missions are court-sanctioned, but others are simply political assassinations).

I have mixed feelings about the "choose your path" text adventures. On the one hand, it's a clever way of adding a great deal of varied content without having to come up with user interfaces to encompass situations as varied as being in prison, managing a ski resort, racing ground-based pods, competing in an interstellar (and trans-species) pizza contest, and so on. And you're never compelled to do them (except when you get thrown in prison), so you can avoid them if you wish.

On the other hand, I tend to approach new text adventures with a bit of wariness and weariness. Some can be relatively simple, but some can be quite difficult (though I have managed to eventually complete all the ones that I've actually started). And given how gorgeous the graphics are in the rest of the game, the simple sketches and text-based screens can be a bit of a letdown. On the whole, however, I'll take the content over the presentation, and I think SR2 is stronger for having these adventures in their current format than it would be if it lacked them entirely. Besides: they're a good fallback when you find yourself running low on cash and nobody wants you to carry some important object from one planet to another.

I find it interesting to compare SR2 with Microsoft's Freelancer. I had very high hopes for Freelancer and bought it as soon as it came out. Within a day, I had put it down again, and I haven't played it since. Freelancer had better eye candy and a more 'realistic' approach--but it felt far more like a railroad game than SR2 ever has. It is a classic example of the difference that good game design can make.

And that's what SR2 has plenty of: good game design. Trip Hawkins (formerly of EA and 3DO) famously said that a good game should be "simple, hot and deep." And that describes SR2. In spite of the variety of gaming styles--or, more likely, because of them--SR2 is addictive and fun.

SR2's greatest game design strength is, I think, the natural manner in which you can leverage yourself into having greater power and influence without ever losing the sense of your character being an individual. Natural (instead of arbitrary) tradeoffs keep you in line. You never command fleets; but if your leadership ability is sufficiently high, you can pay 1 to 6 other rangers to work for you for a while. While you can leverage up your ship and its components to take on the Dominators, you can still get killed if you get careless or overconfident--and there are still times you need to run away. Likewise, you may find yourself earning larger and larger sums for completing tasks and quests--but you may also find yourself spendings thousands or tens of thousands of credits in repairs and missile resupply after a single battle with pirates or Dominators.

Along those lines, your insystem-speed (including during regular space combat) is a function of the ship's size (carrying capacity) and the compnents and cargo inside. This means that a big, hulking ship, loaded with lots of weapons and other goodies, may be _more_ vulnerable than a smaller, less-equipped one, since the enemy can 'surround and pound' you. (With a fast enough ship, you can actually outrun missiles and torpedoes.)

Full disclosure: over 20 years ago, the abovementioned Wayne Holder and I designed and developed a real-time graphical space adventure game for the Apple II called "SunDog: Frozen Legacy". Needless to say, it was a constrained and primitive game, since it ran in 64KB of memory and fit (along with the operating system and all game data) on a double-sided floppy disk (280KB total). (Note: that's _kilobytes_, not megabytes or gigabytes.) Our vision was of a much richer and more complex game than we could possibly fit within those constraints.

SR2 encompasses everything that we did, attempted to do, or every wished we could do in SunDog, but with 21st century technology. It is for me such a delight, 22 years after SunDog shipped, to finally get to play the game that I have been carrying in my head for all this time.

==================
PROS (besides those cited above):

-- The game is rock-solid stable. In many, many hours of play, I've had SR2 crash exactly one, and it did so gracefully. This is in stark contrast to many other commercial releases (Civ4, GalCiv2, Battle for Middle Earth II, etc.). In fact, SR2 is very robust when dealing with external interruptions; twice I've had my system drop back into WinXP due to some kind of alert box from another application (unrelated to SR2); each time, the SR2 bar at the bottom of the screen change to read "Click here", and when I did (after handling the alert box), I found myself right back in SR2 where I left off.

-- SR2 does an automatic autosave every time you lift off a planet (overwriting the previous autosave). As noted, you can save your own games as often as you'd like (but: see below under Cons).

-- The user interface is very slick, very attractive, very fast, and works very well. Likewise, the graphics and music make the game very enjoyable.

-- For most actions, SR2 gives you a choice between automated and user-controlled.

-- The ground-based robot RTS battles are quite fun; the ability to take over and directly control one of your units (with a ground-based view) makes them even more so and opens the door to some more intelligent strategies.

-- E-Games/Cinemaware Marquee (the US producer/distributor) provided very useful support when I had a problem with one of the CDs on my original copy (and simply swapped out my copy for a new one). (Thanks, Nicholas!)

CONS (besides those cited above):

-- As noted elsewhere here, SR2 uses the controversial Starforce copy protection system, though I've had indications from the manufacturer that they plan to replace it.

-- SR2 was developed in Russia (and in Russian); some of the text translations are a bit obscure or confusing, though at times that simply adds to the sense of speaking with an alien whose grasp of human languages might be weak. While in prison, I did find one screen of text entirely in untranslated Russian, but it's not a critical screen.

-- The more games you have saved, the longer the save/load game panel takes to come up (though it always has eventually come up). Since I tend to save games often, this can be an annoyance. My solution is simply to delete saved games more often.

-- You can't save games at all while doing one of the ground-based robot RTS battles or during one of your text adventures. However, both of those environments give you the option of restarting should you lose or fail.

-- There are only two graphics resolutions supported in most of the game: 1024x768 and 800x600. (This is probably one of the reasons why the game is so stable.) However, the ground-based robot RTS subgame also supports 1280x1024--and SR2 will automatically switch back and forth between that resolution and whatever your chosen resolution is for the...Read more›

Dino Crisis 2 Review

Dino Crisis 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The original Dino Crisis was a relatively fun game.Basically Resident Evil with dinosaurs. This sequel hit a stride for the series with more original gameplay. The player can purchase weapon upgrades, and has effectively almost unlimited ammo, making for a much more action heavy experience than the Resident Evil games, while still retaining the "adventure" feel of that series. The graphics were noticeably upgraded too, although they're not going to be a technical marvel by 2005 standards.

It's basically Jurasic Park, done as an action/adventure/survival horror game by Capcom...which is a very good thing.

You'll want a decent control pad (like Logitech or Microsoft) to play this PC version.

I paid $50 for C&C Generals a few years ago. I ended up giving a copy of it to a friend when I bought this set. The price is right and every single on of these games are absolutely some of the best games I have ever played. Not having to pay the premium of the newest, you save so much money, it's crazy not to buy them this way when possible.

Singularity Review

Singularity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had a lot of fun with this game. Many people compared it with Bioshock. While the color pallet and some of the graphics look similar in style, for me the game felt completely different in atmosphere. It's very difficult nowadays to find a first person shooter that's totally original because they are so well established. So Singularity does seem to borrow elements from past shooters, but it does have it's own feel and style as well.

The ambient sounds were creepy and had me constantly looking over my shoulder.Monsters were interesting and the phasing back and forth between the present and the past added some tense moments. There's nothing like walking into a room full of soldiers frozen in the 50's then finding them phasing into the present and opening fire on you to test your skill.

I also like the fact that there was minimal cussing in this game.I'm not a big fan of games that over use foul language. For me a lot of cursing adds nothing to a game.

I do not like the current trend of the auto save versus being able to save when you want in PC games, so that was a big negative for me.It seems that everyone is going that route now though.Another negative for me was that the game was too short, another recent trend.Just when I was really getting into it, I was done.I guess it does say something positive for a game when you are disappointed that it's over.It does have some interesting multiplayer to extend your play time though. Those two cons kept this from being a 5 star game for me.

Overall I had a great time with this game and was glad I bought it.

In the dark, Cold War winter of 1949-50 Stalin, the brutal leader of theSoviet Union, had two super weapons: long range missiles and the atomicbomb. But even if his teams of forced labor managed to build a missile powerfulenough to carry an atomic payload, Stalin still faced encirclement by theUnited States and the Strategic Air Command. He knew that he needed anotheradvantage over the United States, one that would ensure Soviet securityand superiority. Then came the chance discovery on the remote island ofKatorga-12 off the wild Kamchatka peninsula, of a previously unknown material,Element 99 (E99). E99 became the new source of Stalin's hope: a new energysource of unparalleled power. Unfortunately, the new element also yieldeda new kind of contamination risk. But these were acceptable risks to Stalin- anything for the advancement of the Soviet people. Even so, on September21, 1950, driven to complete the project, and in violation of the safetyprotocols, a Russian scientist, Viktor Barisov, personally triggered a devicepowered by E99 that caused a catastrophic event that affected the entireisland. What happened next is unclear. However, there are reports that Stalin'sfinal dying order was a handwritten scrawl to quarantine Katorga-12. Andso the knowledge of the island remained buried...until 2010, when intelligencereports in the west confirm activity on a remote atoll in the Russian Federation'sshadow. The world has no memory of Katorga-12. No concept of what may beon the island off the southeast coast of Russia. It is deemed that the worldcan't afford another Chernobyl - or worse. America's answer is to scramblea stealth flyby of the area. They need recon - and they need it now.

Gameplay and Weapons
Action in Singularity is a mix of combat mission gameplay and puzzle-solving.Combat is against both modern and 50s era Russian forces, as well enemiesmutated through exposure to E99. In this players have their choice ofconventional weapons including: pistols, shotguns, machine guns, sniperrifles, rocket launchers, etc., as well as as few Sci-fi weapons veryspecific to the game. These include the TMD (Time Manipulation Device)and the E99 pistol. The TMD is a gauntlet, which players acquire earlyin the game that can be integrated with conventional weapons. Its mainfunction though relates it its ability to alter time within a small specificarea. The major examples of this are:

Reversion - The ability to alter encounters by rewinding the history of an item or entity to the time of your choosing. This can be used to repair broken items, render enemies harmlessly embryonic, etc.
Aging - The ability to alter encounters by fast-forwarding thehistory of objects or entities, rendering the former rusted and worn andthe latter decrepit with age or simply dust.
Stasis - The ability to freeze time and thus dangerous situations in order to gain an advantage.
Impulse - The ability to propel objects frozen in time in a targeteddirection.
Chronolite - Functionality that allows the player to look back to a time associated with a place, person or object.
Players can also utilize the TMD in conjunction with the E99 pistol, a gun thatshoots bullets infused with Element 99, to hit targets unreachable due todistance and otherwise indestructible cover. In addition, to the TMD's combatuses, it is also indispensable as a tool for solving the spatial-orientedand other types of puzzles that players will face on the island of Katorga-12.

Multiplayer
Singularity contains multiplayer gameplay options, that just as in its single player campaign, integrate conventional combat tactics and weapons with the time manipulation elements.

Key Features

An engrossing storyline blending Cold War history and science fiction elements.
An arsenal of first-person weapons, including conventional firearms and upgradeable, time altering gadgets.
    Mission progressing puzzle-solving gameplay.
Advanced graphics built on the Unreal 3 game engine.
    Multiplayer gameplay options.

ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead Review

ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I been following the game ARMA since the beginning and I bought it through Amazon. For my personal opinion, Bohemia Interactive still have the Legacy of Operation Flashpoint and I have no doubt about this after to be playing theirs MilSims for years.

This Company created serious Military Sims for several Armed Forces through the World, including the US. That means, they are focused in the development of a game which recreate with realism how is to be close to a real war, where the tactics are the key to achieve objectives and the common run and gun behavior in so popular games doesn't work in Operation Arrowhead, as like in a real war.

Some of the characteristics which OA have and the another Shooters doesn't:a) Immersive environment: Operation Arrowhead is closely inspired on the current Events on the Middle East wars and you will hear NPC's speaking in Arabic, doing daily activities like walking on the streets, talking with themselves, driving cars or motorcycles. Also they react positively or negatively depending how you gain their "hearts and minds". For example if during a mission on a village accidentally you kill civilians, the community there will not provide you the necessary intel for the following missions Walking in the desert or on the streets you can almost feel the heat of the environment. This is the kind of reality which the average FPS's doesn't provide it.

b) Replayability: Operation Arrowhead have a total replayability and this is because the lack of tight linear scripts, let the gamer to use different strategies during the missions on the campaign.

Also the powerful Mission Editor let you create any mission with just a couple of mouse clicks .

c) Graphics: The myth of a ubercomputer required to play it is is not so true, because the game let you configure the graphics according to your hardware capacity. However if you are lucky enough to have a powerful computer, you will appreciate the high end graphics configuration capable to create an almost photo-realistic environment, highly detailed objects and terrains without "invisible walls" or narrow corridors.

d) Multiple games in just one Box: Arma games series, including Operation Arrowhead is the Swiss Army knife of the games, because include tank simulator, flight simulator ( and yes, you can use a joystick), FPS, strategy game, RPG, free roaming and sandbox with very huge maps. By this way for example you can ride in a helicopter, flight to a village in the middle of the desert get out, talk with the people there, enter to a house and then take a car to ride back, like you do in games like Grand Theft Auto series,or you can control entires armies in real time like you do in C&C.
The combinations are almost infinite.

e) DLC for everyone and full support from the developers: Thanks to the big community related with Arma games and the open code which Bohemia Interactive provided to the gamers, we have the possibility to expand even more the capacity of the game by adding new campaigns, missions, libraries (vehicles, soldiers, weapons), maps and sounds. This downloadable contents are ALL FREE and the skilled members are continuously adding more and more features. Also if you have the basic programming knowledge, you can create you own mods, missions and then post or use it on the game.

f) Multi-players with dedicated servers: The game can be played in single or multi player. The last option let you enjoy on different communities focused in tactical games, where the strategy, the planning and the coordination is the key to achieve successfully missions as like cooperative of full multi-player.
On cooperative, the online players have to beat risky missions working like a professional team against non scripted NPC's and on full multi-players, the gamers have to challenge another humans using military tactics. So if you are going to go running and bouncing like an headless chicken, you probably will be killed after just 5 minutes of game, also you don't have health pack or endless rounds of ammo. The bullets are affected by the physics laws and the enemies thankfully doesn't have Superman sight (Did you hear "Sniper Ghost Warrior"?).

I recognize Operation Arrowhead and Arma series is not for everyone, is for serious gamers who likes military stuff and are tired of unlimited spawning enemies, narrow maps, zero re-playability and a very linear script witch don't let the gamer the needed freedom, also bombastic cinematographic effects but nonsense reality. This is the kind of game which you will discover more and more features and become one of your favorites for several years to come.

Personally I give it the score of five stars.

Paraworld Review

Paraworld
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The RTS genre has yet to be saturated. Nevertheless, it had been getting repetitive and stale lately. PARAWORLD was a breath of fresh air and it is a VERY FUN game to play!

You are thrown into a world where dinosaurs roam the land and different tribes wage war on each other for the control of resources (wood, rock and food). Each of the three tribes have distinctly units and buildings - and their own tamed dinosaurs. Mounted rhinos, war-mammoths, prehistoric...steam-warships, guarding water-snakes - the list of original ideas is endless!
What has to be mentioned is that playing each different faction does not convey the feeling that you are replaying the same over and over - only with different colors. One tribe has stronger buildings yet weaker units; the other has more dinosaurs yet its fortifications are easily overrun. On top of that, they are all beautifully balanced.

Graphically the game is very well made. Units look and move in a very realistic way, the environmental elements (grass, trees and water) have been nicely rendered - all in all, an impressively looking game.

I picked this for a song - but that is the fate of any game sporting an idiotic protection scheme. The are bin fodder before the year is out. PARAWORLD uses STARFORCE (can you say "class-action suit"?) - hence the star withheld. A pity, such a great game to be shot in the foot by its own publisher.

If you are boycotting STARFORCE games be warned. Otherwise,

RECOMMENDED!

Borderlands Review

Borderlands
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
this is my first review, hope it's helpful (feel free to leave a comment and tell me what i did wrong/right). anyway, on with the amateur ramblings!

when i first saw the trailers for Borderlands a couple of months ago, i said to myself "that looks amazing (in both the graphical and gameplay departments), but it seems to be trying way too hard". i also thought it looked like what Fallout 3 would've been if it was a FPS with RPG elements as opposed to the RPG with FPS view that it is.

as a bit of side information, i got Killzone 2 a week ago and have been playing it nonstop. i've already beaten it twice and i've spent pretty much every waking moment (to my girlfriend's annoyance) playing the campaign or the multiplayer. when i woke up today there was a delivery on my stoop. i told myself i'd open up Borderlands first (i also bought Resistance 2 and a few old school PS1 games (FFIX!)) and play it til the first save or checkpoint. this was at 11am, i'm writing this review at 11:30pm and save for going to dinner with my friends and dropping my sister off at the dorms, i've played the entire time. this game is just that engrossing and sheer fun

i don't think i can explain exactly what makes Borderlands so fantastic... there's just something about it. reviews i had seen on a few sites said that it takes a while for the game to get going and that by the 10th hour or so it really starts to be fun. well, if the game gets much more fun than this, it will be close to my game of the year. everything about Borderlands oozes style and love (meaning you can just tell how much the developers cared about this project). the pacing of the game is fantastic, the difficulty is a little up there, but it works and is never frustrating. the controls are spot on as far as responsiveness, but some of the button mapping is a bit strange (who maps fire to L2?and there doesn't seem to be a way to change it). the AI is fantastic with weapon-based enemies finding anyplace they can to duck behind and fire for cover, while the dog like creatures just get right up in your face. this can be frustrating, but it really makes you feel good when you finally blast them away.

the RPG elements are just kinda... there. while i don't think they detract from the game, i also think that they could have been implemented differently without the overall game changing on a base level. that being said, Borderlands does a great job of Diablo style leveling-up. part of the reason i couldn't stop playing is cause you're ALWAYS building up your character in some small way. it's just incredibly addictive and fulfilling. the one minor nitpick that i can throw in here is having to press square every. single. time. you wanna pick up an item. you can hold it down to pick up multiple items that are very close to each other, but you'll be pressing square A LOT. i know tehre's some things you might not want, but you spend so much time in your inventory screen anyway, they may as well have made it so you just run over something to grab it.

Borderlands sells itself on the concept of it's "87 Bazillion Guns". i've heard real estimates that say there's at least a few hundred thousand and that sure seems to be true. you'll NEVER stumble on the same gun twice. it's both a good and bad thing. obviously it's fun to try out all sorts of different combinations, but a lot more often than you'd like, you'll wind up with a weapon that, while not useless, is just pretty lame and underpowered. when you do find that perfect sniper rifle that shoots lighting, has a 500-round clip and a 120x zoom (just as one of soooo many examples), it'll all be so very worthwhile.

the rest of my nitpicks, and by the way, that's all they are, cause i don't see a single legitimate big complaint with this game, would be as follows: while the game looks cool in it's own way, it think it's almost like a cop-out art style, maybe they didn't feel like doing textures or something. there's also severe framerate issues where you're in the middle of large battles. the vehicles, which make getting around so much easier, don't handle good at all and you get less Exp when you kill an enemy with your car as opposed to being on foot. i wish there were large online multiplayer deathmatches and CoF battles and the like. i'll have to check out the online "duels" at some point, see if they almost make up for that.

when you get right down to it though, this is just an amazing game all around. the graphics have a sheen and polish that not many games have (it's fun to see little HP numbers rolling off someone as you shoot them in the face). i still think Borderlands is trying a bit too hard to be "cool" in the way a Tarentino or Guy Ritchie movie would be, but it just works anyway (much like a Guy Ritchie movie haha). in the end there's just something about Borderlands, some intangible quality, that makes it such a worthwhile experience. i haven't played the online co-op yet, so i can't speak to that, but the single player is one hell of a ride. the areas might all look a tad samey, there's only four character classes to choose from. the driving physics are pretty bad and there's not much variety in your enemies. thing is, none of that matters, Borderlands is amazing in spite of all of it's very minor flaws.

if you've ever liked an FPS, if you've ever liked level-up-fests like Diablo, etc, hell, even if you wanted more action from Fallout 3, you owe it to yourself to at least give Borderlands a chance. this, along with Killzone 2, BlazBlue, Uncharted 2, Dirt 2 (and i can only assume the new Ratchet and Clank game) is one of the top 5 best games of 2009. there's a damn good chance that this game is considerably better than any other videogame you're looking to get on Amazon... pick Borderlands immediately. you won't be let down.

enjoy. hope this helped. =)

The Sims 2: Mansion & Garden Stuff Review

The Sims 2: Mansion & Garden Stuff
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I still believe the stuff packs are overpriced for the amount of stuff they offer. $12-15 would probably be a fairer price. So if you happen to find a sale, definitely go for it.

Mansion & Gardens Stuff is by far the best stuff pack EA has offered. The three decorating styles; Second Empire, Moroccan, & Art Deco, are lovely. The flowers are shrubs are beautiful, a welcome addition to landscaping. I like how the windmill & solar panels will lower the sim's bills. The ceiling fans are a decorative object, but they do actually move so it's a nice realistic touch. I haven't noticed that they affect the temperature of the sims so they are probably merely decorative.

I love the Mansard roof pieces. It makes it so much easier to have attic space that my sims can live in without being affected by the weather. I've had issues in the past of them freezing or getting heat stroke if I had bedrooms in the attic with certain types of roofs.

Knock on wood, I haven't noticed any major glitches with Mansions & Gardens. What a relief. The grand staircases are very nice, but they sure do take up a lot of space. Your sims will autonomously slide down the banister. Usually we do not get any new interactions with stuff packs, so this was a nice surprise. Our sims can smell the flowers too.

The only thing I didn't care for is that some of the new siding is too dark and there's only a few selections. I'm not really fond of the screaming bright yellow. I wish they would have added some of the previous siding colors we've had with the new corner trim. EA could have made this a real expansion pack with more items and options and I would have been over the moon.

I'd consider this stuff pack a must for Sims 2 players.
