Dogz 5 Review

Dogz 5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, here it goes. Petz 5 is by far the best of all the other Petz Cd's!
The breedz are wonderful, especially my little German Shephard puppy named Rochelle. Here are the names of all the new breedz (sorry if I'm missing any) German Shephard, Pappilion, Golden Retriever, Jack Russell, and Pug. I haven't got Catz 5 yet, but I here there is some wonderful new breedz in that game too.
There are over 100 new toys you can win and find in playscenes (you store all of them in the Supply Case) The mini-games can be challenging, but sooner or later you'll win them. My favorite game so far is Rock-Paper-Scissors. Other people might find the mini-games childish, but even my grandma loves them.
There are tons of new clothes too. In some Playscenes, there is even a Host Character (for example, Jolly Roger, a full-grown Bulldog comes out to play with your dogz in South Seas Island) Some people have been spreading rumors that you don't need to feed your dogz on Petz 5. NOT TRUE!!! In fact, there's even a medicine bottle where you can apply medicine to your pet's food and water if they are sick.
If your petz run away, you can go to the Adoption Center and check out the brown bulletin board to see if anyone has found your pet. If there is a note saying your pet has been found you are given one more chance to give your dog/cat a good life.
I give this game five stars, two thumbs up, and four paws up.

Lords Of The Realm II Review

Lords Of The Realm II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This certainly isn't the most exciting game I've played. I had thought it rather simple, until last night when I was explaining it to my roommate who was amazed at the level of detail you could go to. (I don't think he had ever seen any of the Sims games.)

The game is one of strategy, and you'll only enjoy it if you're a medieval buff. In the most general terms, you must conquer all of the counties within a country and become King. There are two smaller kingdoms, and then you hit the real ones: Ireland, England, France, Germany, Italy, and an area they refer to as The Crusades. In order to conquer the counties, you need to manage several things: taxes, weapon building, army building and maneuvering, forestry, castle building and a number of other specifics to build your own budding empire. You need to keep the people that live in your county happy, and this means that they need to eat, and that the appropriate level of taxation exists. If they are unhappy enough, they will revolt, and flee - and you will have lost your county.

When it comes to battles - and there are many - you can choose to either direct the skirmishes yourself (as most do, I'm sure), or in the interest of time you can "autocalc" the battle. The computer then looks at both armies, and determines which should win based on the combatants. For example, if one army contains one hundred peasants, one hundred swordsmen, and one hundred knights; and they face an army with one hundred swordsmen, one hundred macemen, and one hundred knights, the second army will win easily. Why? peasants wield pitchforks.

Product Description:
Lords of the Realm II is a mixture of turn-based county and economic management and real-time combat. As the game begins, the king has died and 5 nobles (including yourself) are vying for control of the realm, including the noble Baron, the headstrong Knight, the ice princess The Countess, and the backstabbing Bishop. You have to hold on to your counties by building larger castles and keeping the peasantry happy and well-fed. When you engage your enemy in battle is when the real fun starts. You are given a Warcraft-type view of the battlefield with the units in your army and have to either get them to retreat (a rarity) or kill every last one of the little buggers. In a siege, you can end the battle by capturing the enemy's flag or dispatching all of your opponents soldiers to the great big Realm in the sky.

Sid Meier's Colonization (Jewel Case) Review

Sid Meier's Colonization
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this game along with the first edition of Civilization many years ago.Unfortunately, we updated the computer, and the new Windows operating systems couldn't work with it anymore. But, now it can be played on XP, which makes me very happy, because even after some 9 years without playing it, I still miss it.
The game has endless possibilities for playtime.I would pay several games in one sitting, even though they could span hours each. It's as simple as Oregon Trail, but more fun because you have more control over the game. You buy supplies from overseas, or buld the proper structures to produce it in your colonies, establish trade routs, build alliances with the natives and other countries who are colinizing, and have a revolution. When you decide to split off from the motherland, you have a revolution, and the citizens divide, lessening your resources, and then the King's men come from across the sea, and the war begins. Good times

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance Review

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance

If you thought X-Wing vs. TIE was good, you'll love this. You play the role of the son of a family caught up in the Rebellion. You start by flying missions for your family business. Eventually you can join the Rebellionand fly X-wings, A-wings, B-wings, and you even get the chance to fly theMillennium Falcon! The range of missions is great, and you can practiseyour skills in the simulator, or the pilot proving grounds. My onlycriticism is that some of the early missions are very tricky, and thedifficulty does not always seem to increase in logical order.

program wouldn't load on its own. i couldn't load it either, so i went to circut city and had one of their "rent a geeks" put it in. even the "super geek" had trouble loading it.first he made sure the problem wasn't with my compuer, then he had to load the program onto a disk and then- load that disk onto my computer. once loaded it has proven to be very good. i'm basicly trying to learn basic strategy with it. not sure if i could ever learn to count cards or not. but i'd like to learn "basic" and have a 50/50 chance. if you don't have a 50/50 shot at winning a game then your just giving away you money as far as i am concerned.

Dungeon Keeper 2 Review

Dungeon Keeper 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We waited quite a while for Dungeon Keeper 2 to come out, and bought it immediately when it did. On one hand, it's great for a sequel. People who played DK1 will easily be able to pick up on moving units, building rooms, lining corridors with traps.
The graphics are better in the sense thatthey're more geared towards future development. Instead of pixel-basedgraphics, the creatures and rooms are now drawn with polygons. While thatmakes some of the monsters look clumsy, it does mean that future graphicswill be much smoother and cleaner.
Going down into your dungeon bypossessing a creature does not cause the creatures to turn into a cloud ofdots - the rooms you roam through are still crisp and easy to see. Roamingthrough your own dungeons is one of the true pleasures of this game, too!
There are only a few extra rooms - you'd have hoped for much morefrom a sequel that took this long to make. The casino is neat, if onlybecause a jackpot-winning minion starts dancing and singing when he wins.(Disco Inferno!)
Rooms have better graphics, though. The hen-houses inthe hatchery, the on-wall bookshelves and torture racks, everything shows asubtle touch.
If choosing between DK1 and DK2, I'd definitely recommendpeople get this game. The challenges and gameplay in DK2 are better thanDK1, and DK1 has many new extra features like Pet Dungeons.
New playerswill appreciate having a well crafted game that is a fun challenge, whileexperienced players will appreciate the subtle differences between the oldand new version.
Don't expect a masterpiece of Sequelhood, but do expecta fun strategy gaming experience that will last quite a while!

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a fan of the first X-Wing game, and, immediately purchased this game upon its release in 1999.The inclusion of the Battle of Endor at the end was the selling point.Ever since, I have not needed another computer game! The other reviews have pretty much spoken for the game's plot and basic features, so I won't comment on those. This game, despite its age, is simply one of the best flight simulator type game out there!

If there is one way to describe this game, its detail! From the complicated story, of which you feel a part of, to the 3-D ships, to all the stuff that happens in the missions it is simply incredible! In the heat of a difficult mission, I have often lost myself in the game, only to shudder when returning to reality!

There are over 50 different family business and Rebel Alliance missions. In these you fly YT-1300 (Milinium Falcon type) freighters, Z-95s, X-wings, A-Wings, B-Wings and Y-wings.Compared with all past games, there is alot of function. You can dock with capital ships, carry containers, operate gun turrets on the freighters and fly through space stations.Space battles are replicated down to the smallest details - sunglare, blast shockwave, large debris, even ejected pilots! You have the ability to communicate with the pilots in your squadron, and there is a variety of "comm chatter" that you get from them!

I have beaten the game twice (it takes a long, long time). The final treat is that you get to fly the Milinium Falcon in the Battle of Endor (the big space battle in Return of the Jedi), complete with a VERY challenging run through the Death Star's interior!Strap on your flight helmets...

In addition to the missions, there is a "flight simulator" section where you can review past tour of duty missions as well as create your own missions! Here you can fly most of the starfighters (Rebel, Imperial, Pirate, Civilian, etc.) see elsewhere in the game. There is a third "Pilot Proving Grounds" section where you can fly Rebel starfighters through a series of mazes and obstacles while competing for the best time.In between Tours, there are some excellent cut scenes. You also earn awards in the Rebel missions and gather various "souviners" during your family missions.

This review has gotten way too long and no one is going to read it anyways, however, X-Wing Alliance is a supurb effort put out by Lucas Arts Entertainment and is well worth the purchase!

Total Annihilation Review

Total Annihilation
Average Reviews:

This game is tremendous long-term fun and enjoyment! Both its simplicity and depth draws you in.Tactics and strategy are paramount.SimCity infrastructure and systematic, medium to long-range planning is necessaryfor building units and other machines. However, this doesn't do squat foryou if you don't have the close-in combat tactics - and the finerunderstanding which land, air, sea unit (or combination) will get youresults. The 3rd-person point-of-view is best when commanding hundreds ofunits and war-making capabilities.
The graphics and sound score iskiller. You've got to watch some of the explosions - they are cool!Youcan't get this type of super incendiary stuff from WarCraft. Add on units, maps, and scenarios are readily available on the Cavedog site.
I'veplayed 3vs1, 2vs2, and 1vs1 on various networks (from NY, OH, and CAcombatants) and had no major problems. This people versus peoplecompletely changes your strategy and tactics - making the game that muchmore high-value.My only minor peave is that you need more than thestandard 10 quick-team assignments for those intensecampaigns.
Regardless, I've been playing for 1+ years - and still loveit.

Roller Coaster Tycoon Expansion Pack: Corkscrew Follies Review

Roller Coaster Tycoon Expansion Pack: Corkscrew Follies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This expansion is more than an addition to the original Rollercoaster Tycoon game, it's like a whole other game. Besides the original features (see my review for RCT) this game includes 25 new scenarios, new rollercoaster types, new attractions (rides, ride enhancements, stalls, andshops), new colors and painting techniques, new landscaping items, newlandscaping themes, more entertainers, and more.
That may seem like a lotof new things, but it's less than it seems. That's why I gave it fourstars. Another game: almost all of those things have to be earned in oneway or another. Like you have to get the rest of the scenarios by startingwith the first five new ones (like the original game), and you have toresearch the attractions, themes, entertainers, etc.
Another cool featureis that you can have almost all the rides play music. There are a lot ofthem too (like rock, techno, gentlle, horror...) and it really adds a lotof life to the park, to you and your guests. As a whole (the RCT and theexpansion) this game is a sure winner. But Corkscrew Follies alone is notthe best or the biggest expansion for RCT, but it's sure worth ahard-earned twenty bucks.

Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun Expansion Pack: Firestorm Review

Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun Expansion Pack: Firestorm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I bought Firestorm I was expecting a normal expansion pack - few new units, maps etc. But once I started playing I realized that there was much more to it than that.
The biggest improvment over Tiberian Sun isstory. The story is much more interesting and although the in game moviessuck it dosen't matter because most of the plot twists are in-game anyways.Special units have been created just for one part in the story, such as ahuge robot, which is a nice touch.
Although the music is being soldas faster paced and more like Red Alert it's pretty much more of the same.Graphics also don't change too much.
The new units are pretty coolbut the Reaper is the only one that I really liked, unfortunatly you canonly use it in Multiplayer. The new Juggernaut artilery unit is alright butit can't really aim that well and the Nod Art. unit is still superior in mymind.
All in all Firestorm makes Tiberian Sun a much better game andif you already have TS then by all means buy Firestorm.

Grim Fandango (Jewel Case) Review

I was very dubious when I started playing Grim Fandango. An adventure gamewith polygons? And the SCUMM menu interface system that was in every singlepast Lucasarts adventure game was gone? But I gave it a try.Thankgoodness I did.
Grim Fandango is a story about Manny Calavera, a travelagent for the souls of the dead. He sells packages to the departed fortheir four year journey to their just rewards, and if he sells enough hecan earn enough to make his own trip someday.
Imagine the theme ofCasablanca with some mexican folklore and Mayan art thrown in for fun. Addbig orange demons, hot rods, killer beavers, cat races, and the grim reaperand you have Grim Fandango.
The story is supurb and the voice acting wastop notch. It's very difficult to do a dramatic yet humorous story, butsomehow this game pulls it off.Grim Fandango could yank me to the brinkof tears one moment and cause me to almost bust a gut another.
The thingsthat make a good adventure game are all there. Logical puzzles that don'tcause your gameplay to come to a standstill until you solve them, goodacting, good animation, and good code! If I were ever forced to reccomendonly on adventure game to someone, this would be it!Especially at the newlow price!

Dungeon Siege Review

Dungeon Siege
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Saw this was out in jewel case for 10 bux (as of this review) and thought I might help you decide.Rest assured this game for this price is a great buy, here's why:

Graphics & Sound: the game looks great.Though some say there are better 3D type games out today this one pulls off the look well and the graphics are smooth. The environments look dazzling and there is little in the way of graphic glitches on most machines. The soundtrack and sound effects are great; and all of the sound fits the mood and environment of the game well. Some of the sound effects are amazing: echoes in caves and tunnels, bones crunching for skeletons, etc...Turn it up and enjoy!

I should note that the camera controls take a little getting used to - though you can modify all options via the in-game menus.Make sure you adjust all the settings to suit your needs and tastes (there are many customizable facets via Options)...

Gameplay & Fun factor: Nothing bad to say at all!Of course if you don't like running around beating up monsters, collecting treasure and magical toys, and saving the world then don't bother with this title: because that is what Dungeon Siege is all about! The story is simple and effective, getting you inot the action fast and furious. The game moves more or less nonstop and although there aren't any complex options for customizing characters or developing skills the simplicity makes the game that much more fun. There are more complex role-playing games out there - Dungeon Siege is not one of them.

If you have a home network this game is a blast. There isn't any adult-only materials in the game that I recall: save for the skeletons and monsters that can sometimes be a little gross. There is blood and gore but it can be switched off via the Options menu.

The original Dungeon Siege comes with 2 playable multi-player maps: the single-player campaign map and another map with a different storyline and slightly different world types. This is a great value for people playing multiplayer games!

Performance & System Notes: the specs on the package (recommended configuration) will run the game very well.Be sure that your Video & Sound drivers are up to date (very important) and disable any background programs (like virus scanners) to improve performance.

The various in-game options to configure video and sound allow for a broad range of optimization: even if your PC is slower or has trouble running the default settings you might be able to tweak it and play at a decent rate.

The 4 stars in this review reflects the fact the game, for some, can get very repetitive: there's a lot of killing monsters, finding treasure, and completing quests - if that bores you after the 300th monster slain then Dungeon Siege may get on your nerves.Happy hunting.

Dr. Seuss' ABC Review

Dr. Seuss' ABC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a classic, the best software/game I know of for little kids. Reading skills aren't necessary -- provided the child can use a mouse or trackpad to point and click, s/he'll have weeks or months of fun with this. This game has been around for a while, and the graphics aren't up to modern standards, but they still capture the spirit of Dr. Seuss's drawings perfectly. The creators did the impossible and extrapolated from the contents of the book to add a huge amount of new content, which matches perfectly and is just as silly and hilarious as Seuss's original work.

We've had this since 1996 or so, and both of my kids grew up with it. Many of the jokes and songs in this have become part of my family's store of in-jokes, just as with any treasured children's book. I can't think of a higher recommendation.

Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour Expansion Pack Review

Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although Generals added a new standard of graphics and several new and interesting departures from the original C&C game design, it was something less than revolutionary. Zero Hour goes a long way toward addressing this issue, and really turns Generals into a completely new game.
The expansion adds a new campaign for each side, with about 5 missions each. The campaign is interesting, and adds a few new elements, but is actually not the best part of the expansion. There are full motion video cutscenes (reporters talking about what's going on) to add some depth to the story, which is pretty straightforward stuff that could happen sometime in the near future (though we hope not). The missions add unique buildings and locations, all well done, as well as objectives that are pretty fun to carry out. Some of them are quite difficult, and there are a few stealth commando missions that Generals sadly lacked. There's also some campaign-only powers, such as the ability to call in battleship artillery and carrier strikes in one of the USA missions.
The real meat of the expansion starts with the new units and upgrades. Each side has new things, some of which go a long way toward filling holes in the armies' capabilities. China, for example, gets some much-needed surveillance by way of the Internet Center, and a worthwhile stealth detector in the Listening Post. Frenzy, a new general power, increases the firepower and armor of units for a brief time. China also gets added airborne firepower with the Helix and the ability to carpet bomb. The GLA gets several low-tech solutions, most of which are still geared toward outmaneuvering rather than outgunning the opposition. The Battle Bus, however, can pack quite a punch in a frontline role. Fake structures, a sometimes-useful throwback from Red Alert, can also be purchased. More interestingly, they can be upgraded into real ones, which is a nice way to play with an opponent's mind. The USA gets a powerful base defense with the Fire Base, which is garrisonable, effective against infantry, and doesn't need power to shoot. They also get a mobile anti-air unit in the Avenger, making it unnecessary for you to bring weak Missile Defender-packed Humvees along in future battles. Three new tech structures are also added- the Repair Bay (repairs all your ground units), Artillery Platform (shoots at enemies with a howitzer), and Reinforcement Pad (produces a tank on a countdown).
The upgrades and units are standard expansion fare, but Zero Hour adds something else- new generals, each with their own combat styles, units and powers, and personalities. There are three for each side- Air Force, Lasers, and Superweapons for the USA; Toxins, Camouflage, and Demolitions for the GLA; and Nukes, Tanks, and Infantry for China. Each of these has a doctrine that you must adhere to if you wish to use them effectively, and have weaknesses that hold you to it. For example, the US Air Force general cannot make tanks, but has aircraft cost reduced, unique and better air units, and a point defense laser on all airplanes that along with the standard countermeasures upgrade makes them practically immune to missile fire. China's tank general can build the Emperor Overlord, which is the newest and baddest vehicle on the ground. The GLA camouflage general can make literally everything invisible to the unaided eye, and turns the GLA into a real guerilla army (his Scud Storms are especially scary). All of these generals can be used in skirmish or multiplay, and there is a special 'generals challenge' campaign in which you pick one and play against all others. Your opponent is always on territory that favors their doctrine, and it can get pretty tough. This is a great way to accustom yourself to the various generals and pick your favorite, and is also quite fun since your opponents continuously taunt you during the games.
It's worth mentioning that several nice tweaks have been added to the engine. For example, fighters on an airbase will automatically attack nearby enemies, and both superweapons and scouting powers (e.g. radar van scans) appear as a sidebar icon with a number indicating how many are ready, if it's more than one. This makes it no longer necessary to separately hotkey practically every unit you have. Multiplayer options have been added, such as how much cash to start with, and no superweapons. The already excellent graphics have been improved, with even more fantastic fireballs, flotsam and jetsam, and better water effects. The result is undoubtedly the most graphically appealing RTS out there, though you might need a new video card if you want to run at max detail.
In summary, Zero Hour is for all intents and purposes a completely new game. Some have argued that it is what Generals should have been from the start, but I'm glad EA took the time to do a good job on this rather than rushing it for release. I honestly have no complaints about the expansion- it's one of the best ones I've seen for any game. It's a definite must for any Generals fan, and even if you weren't overly impressed with Generals, Zero Hour might just change your opinion.

I write this review well over a year after the game came out simplybecause I have to reiterate to those that may not have the game how greatit actually is. I say this, because even after a year, I am still playingAlpha Centauri. There are not very many games that interest me 3 monthsafter I beat them, much less a year. It is so satisfying on so manydifferent levels that whenever I need a break from another game, I'll spenda couple days exploring Alpha Centauri again. There are several differentways to win. You can conquer the planet through military might, be electedSupreme Leader by the Planetary Council, Corner the Energy (the gamescurrency) market, or the Ascent to Transendence, which is basically themost technologically advanced faction. Such parameters allow for variedstyles. Want to beat your neighbor senseless? OK. Are you sneaky and wantto forment revolts? You can do that to. Or you can buy off votes in theplanetary council with cash or technologies. But it is many of the smallthings that make this game shine. Alliances actually work - your friendswill help you when you need it, cut you off if you stab them in the back, and grow suspicious if you become to powerful. You can give away cities toreward a faithful vassal or pacify an enemy. If you commit atrocitiesagainst an enemy they will fight you to the last man. However, if you are anoble enemy, they will submit to your will and become your vassals. Suchsmall details are glorious in the otherwise "kill 'em all" worldof computer gaming. My few complaint with the games are niggling. On thehigher difficulty levels it seems you are battling with a hostile planetrather than smarter enemies - which seems a copout for what is otherwise arobust AI. Also, the end game can really drag. If you have conquered two orthree other factions and have a ton of cities to manage, a turn can take upto half an hour to manage everything. These small things aside, AlphaCentauri is brilliant game design at work. After a year I only wish othergame designers had taken a look at some of the options the Firaxis teamoffered.
