Mech Commander Gold Review

Mech Commander Gold
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mech Commander the original version was a good enough game, but Mech Commander Gold offers some much welcomed improvements. The original game offers explosive real time action mixed with the need for a cunningstratigic mind as you command up to twelve 'mechs in real time combat. After missions, you repair your mechs and claim salvage with which to planthe next mission. Also, you can purchase new 'Mechs or more experiencedpilots to control them. The values of the Gold add-on are new missions, sixnew 'Mechs an excellent ammo-conservation mode (this alone warrentspurchasing Gold) and a nifty waypoint system. All in all I'd say MechCommander Gold is one of the most enjoyable Mech games on the market. Addto this a large network of Multiplayer Leagues, and the fun continues asyou engage in combat with Mech Warriors from around the globe.

Warcraft II - Battle.net Edition Review

Ever since I was 13 I have loved this classic real time strategy game.Although it may not have the fancy graphics or customizable characters that many RTSs can boast of today, what is does have is simplistic fun.Tolkien style fantasy war; orcs verses humans, knights verses horded monsters, heck... it even has dragons verses defenseless peasants!Have your legion of paladins ride off to expunge forces of darkness from it's goblin infested lair, or if you prefer, knock down your enemy's church and eat what you find inside!

With it's well rendered cartoon graphics, funny catch phrases, skill testing resource management, and good old fashioned explosion noises Warcraft 2 battle net edition can be fun for anyone with an eye for real time strategy.

Shogun: Total War Warlord Edition Review

Shogun: Total War Warlord Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of the original Shogun with its Risk-like turn-based strategy combined with real-time battles, so I rushed right out and bought a copy of the Warlord Edition (the expansion is also supposed to be available for download at a reduced price to those who own the original). The Warlord Edition is well worth the $..., however. There are several new troop types, including the Mongol hords -- the firebombers are nasty little dudes -- and the new Japanese troops include the mystical battlefield Ninjas and devistating sword saint, a one-person wreaking crew.
A couple of things I really like about the expansion: no more "landscape drift," your camera stays where you point it, and several new campaign scenarios. Under the old game, you basically had one starting point for a full campaign, with Japan basically divided equally between seven clans. Now, you have the option of four different starting points on a full campaign, including one with the Mongols invading Japan, and you also have four shorter "historical campaigns," in which you take over a clan during a period in Japan's history.
A couple of minor annoyances: The manual is still not very good. Get old Prima strategy guide if you're unfamiliar with Shogun. Also, in an apparent attempt to make the game historically accurate, not all troop types are available for all campaigns. For example, warrior monks and the rifle troops are not availablewhen you're playing the Warlord Campaign vs. the Mongols.
But overall, this is a very worthy addition to my favorite game ever.

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans Review

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans

This game is a full blown dos game yet easy to install with the right tools.. in less than 2 minutes I was playing the game.I installed it on 2 machines; a core 2 duo with Vista x64 home premium and a P-4 prescott single core with hyperthreading and xp professional.I used a dos emulator on both machines called dosbox which downloads for free(just google dosbox) and a front end loader that is free called dosshell made by Loonies Software also downloadable. set the dosbox config file to cycles=auto and core=auto. Doxbox nailed the speed for this game on both machines. From the Dosbox z: prompt type mount d d:\ -t cdrom, then hit enter, then type mount c c:\ and hit the enter key, then type d: and hit enter.. this will mount your hard drive and cdrom drive and put you on the cdrom drive.type install and follow the instructions making sure you remember what sound options you used and later go back to the dosbox config file to make sure it says the same thing you installed.Do the full install option and you won't need to use the cd to play the game.. it will play from your hard drive. Dosshell is just as easy.go to edit in the upper menu and then preferences and make sure the dosbox path is intact or browse for it in program files.click the add Icon and type in Warcraft as a name and type in a group.. I used "real time strategy" then browse the path to warcraft ... most likely c:\warcraft. and press ok. the Icon will show up in the group tab you put it in.double click it to play. I mount most of my dos games in this fashion currently I have 17 games mounted.Warcraft is easy to play and you can set the speed of scrolling and how fast the units move right in the options menu of the game.It plays on both of my machines smoothly and with no hangups. The resource gatherers(orc peons and human peasants) will harvest away without stopping until they run out of resources or the opposition attacks them.Your fighting units have to be moved individually and you must click them to move them and use the move command in the menu.I gave this game a 4 cause moving individuals and not being able to draw a box around a group of them got a little tedious and the graphics are dated.... but the game is still a classic and one of the few early real time strategy games. Many of these dos games were turn based strategy, operating much like chess or checkers. This game might be "An Oldie but it's a Goodie".

Homeworld Cataclysm Review

Homeworld Cataclysm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you enjoyed Homeworld this sequel is an absolute must! If you haven'tplayed Homeworld and enjoy real-time 3D strategy games you might want tocheck it out.
I've been playing games for a long time and have becomesomewhat jaded and difficult to impress. However the original Homeworldjust blew me way! Stellar graphics, an immersive story, great music and adream of an interface that smoothly integrated tactical and strategiccontrol.
Homeworld Cataclysm builds upon this base very well. Rather thanjust reusing the original "Mothership" and it's fleet of craft, the developers have created an entirely new fleet and set of technologiesfor you to explore.Years have passed in the Homeworld Universe and manynew technologies have been acquired beyond the original cloaking andgravity well generators. EMP vessels, holographic projections, covertdrones and much more add an even greater level of sophistication to thegameplay.
Of course the 3D battles are staggering. Full visual effects, coordinated sound and a high frame rate brings space battles, I imagined asa kid, to life. It makes me wish I had a Video Out on my graphic card totape to share the visuals.
The user interface has been polished to nearperfection. The control of a large and complex fleet is a pleasure, asopposed to the pain, compared to many simulation games. The few areas ofthe original Homeworld interface that were weak, such as selecting adistant location in three dimensions, have been greatly improved.
Thesound is still "realistic" and informative. The music isonly"good" this time around. The haunting and highly emotive music ofthe original is missing.
This game is far less buggy than mostsimulations I've played. But I did come across a small number that didn'tcrash the game, but an end of mission condition wasn't recognized. This canbe solved by a game restart an then reloading your last saved game ofrestarting the particular mission.
I've completed the single player gameand am taking a brief break before I go on-line and play multiuser. Withthe game's new fleet technologies, great visuals and smooth interface I'llactually enjoy experiencing the new ways I'll get my butt kicked by kidshalf my age.

I still cannot believe that Endwar has such an amazing voice command system that will pick up on every order your give. You really should invest in the headset bundle to really understand for yourself. Another feature worth listing are the airstrikes and weapons of mass destruction you can call in through your headset to destroy multiple units at once. This expansion pack probably made TA: Kingdoms better. This expansion pack has a better story and a new faction that is pretty cool. With alot of new maps, units, scenarios, and a free on-line game mission, this is a great deal. The only problem is this is still a slower paced game in the line of the Command & Conquer series. A shame this game had to follow in the foot steps of the original TA as TA was very fast paced game. If you already have TA: Kingdoms, get this expansion pack and you won't be disappointed, especially the last battle.

Razer Abyssus High Precision Optical Gaming Mouse Review

Razer Abyssus High Precision Optical Gaming Mouse
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great mouse for RTS and overall a near perfect item.I rarely give 5 stars but this is an extremely high quality item.I gave it a 4/5 on comfort because I bought it to use fingertip grip which I don't think is a very comfortable way to use a mouse. However, this mouse makes fingertip grip more comfortable than on others I've tried.I've tried Logitech mx500, g500, LMO, salmosa mini and could not fingertip grip them at all comfortably while this mouse makes it pretty comfortable. The mouse has prediction / mouse smoothing / angle snapping whatever you call it turned off which is great.I have had no acceleration problems with it although I don't use the large mousepad palm style that I used to with FPS games so I probably wouldn't notice them if they were there. As for the complaints that it doesn't work with certain mousepads I think the incident rates of that are extremely low.I use a goliathus control and have had 0 problems. It's extremely lightweight, only beaten by a salmosa mini or a LMO with the weight removed. You can definitely claw grip this mouse or even palm it though your entire palm will likely not contact the mouse which may not be a bad thing.I often claw or palm it without realizing it during casual browsing so it is a comfortable way to hold the mouse. The mouse does not need any drivers which is great.Just flip it to 1,000hz and whatever DPI you want and you're good to go.I like the mouse wheel quite a bit.It is very firm and is lower on the mouse than normal.I feel a lot more comfortable using it as a mouse3 button than on any other mouse I've tried. The texture is very good.I was concerned it would be too slippery but I have not found my fingers sliding out of position during play and also it allows for a certain rotation of the fingers which is needed for fingertip grip as you pull the mouse towards and away from you.The sides of the mouse are shaped like this < > but not nearly that extreme of an angle obviously. This allows for a good grip on the lower half of the mouse so you don't have to squeeze it so hard to pull it up off the mousepad to reposition. The top angle gives you a good resting place for your ring finger. That is definitely the most important ergonomic aspect of the mouse for me. With all the other mice I've tried there is often no clear place to put your ring finger, especially with fingertip grip. The liftoff distance is a little bit high compared to my g500 but still lower than most other mice I've tried. The only other thing I can think of to improve on is the angle and height that the mouse cord comes out of the mouse. It is just like other mice but I think that the cord should come out at a bit of an up angle so it doesn't catch on the mousepad as easily, especially when using a mouse bungee.Other than that it is really a great mouse. This mouse is only very slightly behind my mx510 overall and by far the best for RTS games.

Real War: Rogue States Review

Real War: Rogue States
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Real War enthusiasts will enjoy the latest in the series Rogue States, a Real War upgrade offering logic improvments and new weaponary on both sides. One caveat on this review is that I am basing it on only several "skirmish" episodes and not using online play or running any campaign scenarios
What is there to like...the new weapons, improved graphics, pre-orders for units being built, advanced defense logic for units, movement and attack logic are a definite improvment. All of these make Rogue States a good buy if you want to upgrade from Real War.
What still needs improvment...the movment logic is still a bit off...I tried to send a convoy of tanks at a target and half of them ended up getting stuck trying to cross a river. This has improved quite a bit, this should continue to be improved.I also would like to see Rogue states better integrated with the old Real War...it would be cool to go back and run the old campaign with new weapons. As far as I know this isn't the case.Lastly, there are still issues with forces causing extensive collateral damage...the new weapons are quite effective at takibng out most of your own forces as well as the enemies...I wish there was a bit better intelligence here to prevent this from happening on such a wide scale
What is bad...I am all for new weapons but the ILA (terrorist
group) but the use of experimental weapons gives them a big advantage.A laser cannon that liquidates ground forces instantly seems a bit unfair and unrealistic. The notion of this weapon having a weakness that can be exploited doen't appear obvious in this case. The U.S. doesn't appear to have a similar weapon that is that deadly. The fact that this weapon is super accurate makes ground attacks very frustrating.Combine the Rail Gun with the Super Cannon and Fixed GTA and the ILA base is pretty much impossible to assault...or shall I say your little skirmish you thought would only last 45 minutes will take 4-5 hours of game time.
Those things aside, I would say Rogue States is worth the price. The new weaponary and improved logic will give Real War addics a new opportunity to develop their tactics.Keep in mind too that ReaL War is NOT a pre-requisite for installing Rogue States.

Submarine Titans Review

Submarine Titans
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Think of this as Command and Conquer underwater! This game predicts how undersea empires would wage war over a century in the future.

If you long for the days of the 1990's when you played C&C and all it's sequels, and you still have a working Windows 98 machine sitting around (like I do, thankfully) then by all means spend a buck or two and get this game!

Sure it looks like it was done a few years ago, but the implementation is beautiful. The sea floors are very textured with lots of precisely rendered and colorful little sea critters swimming by as you build your base and your subs and try to complete your mission.

The various units and technologies are very imaginative. There's a lot of very cool units with big, interesting tech trees to work your way through. The missions are challenging but not infuriatingly difficult or mindlessly easy. There are cut scenes between missions, and you can play through three campaigns: one for each race (or group) represented in the game.

This game is as much art as programming and was obviously a lot of work for a lot of people.I don't know why it didn't become one of the most well known RTS games of its time.

Oh yeah, I've played this game through several skirmish missions and I'm six episodes into a campaign and it hasn't crashed yet!The game is totally reliable from a technical point of view.

So, spend a buck or two for a used copy and give it a try.Once you start, you might not come up for air for a long time!

Submarine Titans is a real-time strategy game set in the distantfuture. A massive comet hits the Earth in 2047, forcing survivors below the surface of the oceans. There are the power-hungry White Sharks, the technology-savvy Black Octopi, and the alien Silicons. Players can build and deploy armies, research technology, and mine for resources. Units and buildings can be hidden in caves, under cliffs, or above opponents. The 3-D underwater universe contains five depth/elevation levels, winding mountain ranges, dimly lit caverns, cliffs, and dark tunnels. The four environments include toxic wastelands and the artic. To be blunt, this game shows what can be accomplished in the video game industry. This feels like a labor of love. It isn't a quick sit down and shoot up some bad guys for a few minutes type of game. This is more for people who want to sit down and totally immerse themselves in a massive universe.

This one is a rarity. This one you don't play; you experience.

Across the top of the box it reads "Trade Fight Build Think". It delivers on those promises in spades. Highest praise and I would not hesitate to recommend this title to anyone interested in the genre. What put the icing on the cake was the fact that I was not familiar with the franchise and bought it out of desperation to find something, anything that would actually install on my PC. To discover such a gem made me forget about the problems I was having with a couple other titles.

I grew up placing my head into the "sight" for Battlezone at the arcades.Shooting my happy little green enemies with my little greenbullets. So, naturally, I was interested in the souped up 90s version ofBattlezone.I wasn't disappointed.
Activision took the Battlezonefranchise and created the first successful hyrbid of Real Time Strategy(RTS) and a First Person Shooter (FPS).You've got all the excitement of agood simulation/shooter in the game plus a good depth ofstrategy.
Despite being a '98 game, it still looks pretty. It's alsoplenty challenging.I did get to a point, however, where I was tired offighting the same old Bad Guy ships, so eventually I weaned myself from thegame.I've heard the the game shines in multiplayer (death match).
Ifyou're looking for an inexpensive, but good 3D title. This is a definitewin.

WarCraft III Expansion: The Frozen Throne Review

WarCraft III Expansion: The Frozen Throne
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This isn't merely an expansion.- This is practically a whole new game. The software team at Blizzard has outdone themselves once again, bringing us yet another great Role-play stategy masterpiece.Frozen Throne gives us more Warcraft 3, chock full of great new units, diverse new heroes, and 26 new levels in the campaign/story of Azeroth.Frozen Throne is full of new items, creeps, and multiplayer options and levels.I really can't think of anything worth complaining about concerning this release.I myself found Warcraft 3 to be a little difficult; even after playing for months and honing my skills.Fortuneatly, if you have a hard time with Frozen Throne and get tired of punching the monitor in aggravation, you can now adjust the difficulty of your opponent.Three settings: Easy, Normal, and Insane. There is also a nifty Handicap option in the setup screen that can make computer controlled players a bit weaker. So aside from the cool new units and heroes, this game brings more balance to the Warcraft experience.Blizzard has done a great job adjusting and modifying units, hit points, and build times from the previous game. For instance:Some buildings now build faster, certain units cost less food points, and the total food cap is now raised. - Adversely, some buildings now take longer to upgrade, heroes gain experience slower after a time, and particular items are now more expensive etc..The list goes on.Though I am glad to report that just about all of the changes are good. The game is better balanced and a bit more fun now.The new units and maps (even has weather effects now -/snow/ rain) breathe new life into the Warcraft world. This is definitely a better offering than the original Warcraft 3.-Hardcore RTS/RPS gamers and newcomers alike would be foolish to pass up a seat on The Frozen Throne.

Amazon.co.uk ReviewLead your Samurai warriors once more in Shogun Total War: The Mongol Invasion Add-On Pack for Shogun Total War. As before your task is to command thousands of loyal samurai and other troops against warring factions in massive battles that will determine the fate of Japan itself. Keeping true to the original game, this add-on pack offers four new campaigns and four new strategy map scenarios to take you straight into the action. The main thing you'll notice is the addition of the Mongolians to battle against as they try to invade Japan in the 13th century. Of course with any addition of a new race in a game comes a host of battlefield units to get to grips with and additions like the Mongolian Cavalry make for a gruelling challenge. Rather than just adding a new race and new challenges to conquer, EA have tinkered with the AI giving the gameplay a more balanced approach as well as improving the interface and presentation of the whole game overall. If you're looking to put a new lease of life into what is essentially a very good game then this will certainly do the trick. --Jason Denwood Manufacturer's DescriptionLet the battle begin! Feudal Japan is under attack from invading Mongol hordes in the official expansion pack for Shogun: Total Warlords. The new enemy threatens to destroy the country and offers a completely new style of gameplay with the focus on pillaging the Japanese landscape (rather than building). The Mongol Invasion pack will also offer an array of new and improved features to reintroduce players to the original Shogun title that delivered a revolutionary style of gameplay through its epic size battles, giving players command of thousands of warriors, each with their own unique Artificial Intelligence (AI) and fighting to unify Japan under their own powerful warlord.

Best Seller Series: Tribes 2 Review

Simply put, this game is a kick azz killer.Even though it's about 4 years old, the graphics are great and the gameplay fun as ever. However, tribes has a steep learning curve (took me about 4 months to be able to hold my own) The training missions do help quite a bit (that AI could have some nasty aim) But the skillz will come with time. Team work is great (provided you join a decend team) Nothing is more satisfying than seeing your clanmates fight to retake their base that was overrun after an enemy invasion, load up a couple of bombers and bomb the enemy back to the iron age, then getting some guys in the enemy base too take it over - Then parking a tank or two and a Mobile point base with a morter turrent right next to the enemy base to maximize damage. If you get tribes, you will be in for some epic battles on land, in the air, and underwater. Don't miss out on this one ;) see ya on the battle field
