(More customer reviews)For the record, neither EA nor Konami has made any innovative upgrades to their franchises for many years. Back when Konami wasn't releasing a new game every year, there used to be surprising innovations in the PES franchise. FIFA hasn't changed much in terms of gameplay since FIFA98. So both FIFA and PES are far from what they should be.

If you have been playing FIFA: there is little justification for you to switch. PES 2010 doesn't offer a much more enjoyable experience.

If you have been playing PES: This is the PES that you are used to and love, it's a nice upgrade from PES2009 in almost any aspect of the game.

If you have never played a soccer game before: Take PES, it has better player movements, tactical support, good AI (except for the refs and the goalies). It may lack the realistic feel outside the penalty area that FIFA is slightly better at, but it is much more exciting in the penalty area when it comes to passing and shooting for goals. Goals in FIFA are a bit more boring than PES goals.

It takes time to change from the the old PS2 model to the newer PS3/Xbox 360 platforms. Perhaps Konami were 'caught out' a little when people changed over to the newer consoles- I don't know, but clearly the PS2 model was certainly not appropriate for today's more powerful consoles!

'PES 2008' wasn't even good enough to be categorised alongside the rest of the PS2-based incarnations of PES- I was so disappointed when I first played it on my old PS3. The sound was appalling, the graphics were abysmal- remember those horrible puke-green pitches...?? That, I would have excused if the gameplay had made up for it, but sadly, it didn't! Yeah, it was 'playable', but for me, it just was not enjoyable.

'Once bitten...' I therefore decided to try the demos for both 'PES 2009' and 'PES 2010' over the two years that followed- and still it wasn't the PES that I once knew and loved. Needless to say, I did not purchase them!

Surely 'PES 2011' would be the one... surely... it just had to be...!

Well... *drum roll* / -: ... IT IS (the one)! Finally, Konami have gotten the series back on track(!), and in my opinion have made so many improvements to the series, that they have more than made up for the disasters that were the past three games in the series.

PES Vs FIFA...

PES 2011 plays superbly, there are so many subtleties to the game, most I am sure will not be truly appreciated (if at all) by the casual player. PES is a simulation of the real game, perhaps it is a niche market- like fine wines (many adults may enjoy wine, but very few are connoisseurs). Don't get me wrong, I'm not really a drinker (I'm boring like that), I'm just trying to draw a comparison, however crude.

I'm not here to put FIFA down- if you prefer that type of football (soccer) game- good for you, play what you prefer. I'm a mature player, I 'switched' to PES 3, back in 2004- but I still bought FIFA as well (however, I preferred PES).

Essentially, FIFA and PES are aimed at two different types of player; I honestly do not feel that FIFA has anywhere near the depth of play that PES has- nor the variety of play. FIFA is great to play online- it's a high-adrenaline game- like the English Premier League. I however prefer the Spanish/South American/Italian styles of play: I want to see/experience intricate play, skillful passing- a more subtle battle that doesn't rely so much on brute strength and speed.

PES 2011- the game itself...

As for the actual game as a whole, Konami have rebuilt the game, however they have gone back to the traditional on-pitch gameplay that the true fans of the series love and appreciate. I used to use the 'Broadcasting 1' camera (the 'Broadcasting 2' camera was pretty useless in actual gameplay), and that has now been replaced!

I have read postings where people have complained about this, and I was worried about purchasing the game as a result of all the moaning. Well, I actually think the current 'broadcast' camera is far superior to the old one- I love how the camera zooms-in/out/pans- where appropriate. Believe me, it does not detract from the game one bit- it enhances it!

The graphics are excellent, and in all honesty, I prefer them to the graphics of FIFA. The sound is great this year, too- the sound of the ball being kicked is spot on. Wow, 'PES 2008' was a disaster in so many departments- I'm so glad that Konami have returned to their winning formula... finally!

I haven't played the Master League yet, but I have read that it is extremely absorbing, so I am looking forward to that! The menus are much nicer than the drab menus that EA Sports insist on using, and the computer generated opening video is absolutely incredible!

If you enjoyed PES up until 'PES 2008', you will love this game- it's incredible. The more you play, the more you discover. The passing is superb, lobbing the ball is a delight- the way it lofts into the air, and then descends- poetry in motion! As for manual cursor switching- semi is quite adequate- very enjoyable to use- so once again, I don't understand why people are moaning.

The game speed is changeable- and I have set it to '-2'- and I feel that is just right for the style of play that I employ. The great thing about the PES series (forgeting the last three versions) is that the CPU is a brilliant opponent- it isn't a juggernaut- like in in FIFA. PES is a great game to play offline, against the CPU- I have no time for online any more- too many bad sports/cheats. What's the point of getting angry when you play? That's why I stick to playing offline!

I appreciate the subtleties that Konami bring to the console football (soccer) market, no match is ever the same, and there are so many different ways of scoring (not just a few variations). Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean that it is easy to score, I just mean that there is plenty of variety in how you can score a goal.

I'm sure the game isn't perfect- nothing is, that would be impossible. However, I'm not looking for absolute perfection, just a simulation of the real game- and this, I feel, is delivered once again by Konami!

I highly recommend this game.

Can't decide whether to buy Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 or Fifa 2010 on Wii?Comparing the 2010 PES and Fifa versions for Wii leaves little to argument: if you're looking for an authentic soccer experience, PES is far superior.

Read other Amazon reviews and you readily discern that Fifa has tried something new by opting for a kiddy, arcade feel.It's as if an ignoramus in Nintendo's or EA Sports' boardroom ordered the programmers to alter a tried and true formula.The result? Like altering a long-standing Thanksgiving tradition, EA has, by analogy, brought a tofu "turkey" to dinner, and long time Fifa fans will be drastically disappointed with EA's miserable product (though young gamers may like the simple play).

Aiming to please the casual Wii sports fan, EA revamped Fifa graphics, options, and gameplay--but all for the worse.Some may think the graphics an improvement as character faces are more life-like than ever, but objectively the players look much like an out of proportioned Quasimodo.As regarding the game's options, Fifa fans will be irate that, when playing a season, there is no option to change from 2 minutes halves.Fifa's game play also suffers from such unbearable new "features" as the shooting slow-mo (The game goes into slow-mo nearly every time a shot is made.) and the corner/free-kick green ball.(You might be letting in 3 free kicks per game on the higher levels.).Fifa did significantly correct one astonishing oversight from Fifa 2009: they assigned different buttons for ground and air passes, whereas last year's version only had one button for both passes, leaving the 2009 game unplayable except with the Gamecube controller.(Fifa 2009 with the GameCube controller is a far superior game than the newer version.)

How does PES compare?My ideal Wii football game is one that takes advantage of the Wii's point to the screen abilities, allows you to play accurate/realistic passes, challenges you with life-like computer AI, and allows you to develop a team/players over a season.PES 2010 on Wii excels in all these areas, and once you read the below tips to correct some of the ostensible errors, the true fan of the beautiful game will be loving PES 2010.

As with Fifa 2010, PES 2010 allows you to point to the screen to make a pass to any specific location.While both games still need to improve the accuracy of through balls and balls over the top (In both games you will occasionally find yourself passing to the feet/chest of a teammates instead of in front of the teammate.), it is much easier to intentionally play a pass in front of the receptor in PES than in Fifa.(If you cannot figure out how to make a long, air pass in PES 2010, know the instructions in the booklet are wrong: to play a long, air pass, double tap B in rapid succession.)The brilliantly refined invention in PES 2010 is the point and drag a teammate option which allows you to make off-the-balls runs in any direction.In other words, with the control stick you can run the ball handler in one direction, while pointing and dragging a teammate to make a run in completely the opposite direction.As a result, I can finally make "el Chino" David Silva cut outside with the ball and play the perfect through pass to inside cutting "el Guage" Villa who is perfectly on-side.)At first the controls, dribbling and zone marking on defense, will seem overly complicated--and perhaps not suitable to the casual gamer or gamers under age 10--but be patient, play a season, and the wonderful instructional videos will have you executing the inspired moves within a week.(For instance, for eternity, football games have only allowed you to play give-and-go passes where the "goer" runs straight down the field.Utilizing the Wii's capacities, PES 2010 allows give-and-go passes in any direction.)As for the AI, PES 2010 is really the first football game I have ever played where the computer, on the advanced settings, does not try to dribble down the center of the field, but rather plays the ball around the field: tic-y, tac-y.Regarding options, though PES lacks the licenses on some Premiership teams and does not carry second division teams in any of the European leagues, you can play a full season with Champions League, compete in just the Champions League, dispute a country cup with any major European/South American club or national team, or create your own team--even with Mii characters.PES also features a menu in multiple-languages, as well as commentary in multiple-languages: English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese.(Me gusta m

(More customer reviews)Whether you are a huge soccer fan or totally new to the sport this game is a blast. I bought Fifa 10 at release and have played it a ton and this game only improves on it. Same great engine from Fifa 10 is tweaked to address some major annoyances. (Defenders chesting balls in the box down straight to attackers for gimme goals, easy chips of the keeper)
Scatter shot observations.

All 199 teams, many with authentic jerseys. New stadiums and overall presentation is great although the in-game cut scenes can get a bit repetitive.

Graphics in the cut scenes are also improved and the player close-ups look better than ever. Captain your country is a pretty cool feature, and if you have a created player from Fifa 10 you can transfer him over. The stats you worked so hard to build up will not transfer though as you have to progress by performing well in qualifying and friendlies on the way to the World Cup.

Tourney mode starts with qualifying and friendlies. A simulate match option would come in very handy here since it takes forever to make it to the actual tournament.

Scenarios mode puts you in real life situations from the qualifying around the world with goals to accomplish in each game. Very fun mode with additions coming as the actual cup progresses. The announcers, while not my favorite individuals, are very accurate to situations and add to the game when you can hear them over the crowd (sliders available).

Online mode is fresh but limited to a World Cup tourney starting from the group stage. Pick one country and play three group matches to progress, then to the round of 16, and four single elimination games to win the cup. You do not have to play them all at once. Not sure how the matchmaking works but it is a blast. I would have enjoyed the inclusion of the team play modes which were a blast in Fifa 10. Doubt this was a space issue so I think it should have been included in a full price game.

I guess that is it. Overall a great purchase for most, especially if you have some competitive friends to play with!

(More customer reviews)First, let me start by providing my experiences with FIFA 2011. After reading rave reviews on FIFA 2011, I decided to give it a try after skipping FIFA 2010 (also had glaring reviews) and going with PES 2010. You can read my review on FIFA 2011, but bottom line is I ended up selling it mainly due to unrealistic and indistinguishable gameplay despite FIFA touting the "realistic" gameplay.

Unrealistic because you can never execute a deadly thru-pass with a top player with just one lowly defender who stood between you and the forwards running/waiting for that thru-pass. A defender would always intercept the pass unless you direct the pass to a completely open area which defeats the purpose. In real life, playmakers like Gerrard, Iniesta, Xavi, etc provide deadly thru-passes toward inside the box past 2-3 top defenders.

Indistinguishable because no matter which team you play or who you're controlling, they all have the same characteristics and speed. Messi or Ronaldo can't out run a lowly defender. The game was boring and tedious. I loved FIFA's clean presentation, soundtracks, editing capabilities, even down to customizing the chants, but it failed to deliver in gameplay and fun factor which is the core of any video games.

So I went back to PES series and my experiences have been mostly positive. PES 2011 have a much more streamlined and clean interface. You still don't have all the licenses or real stadiums but the game play is so much better and exciting compared to FIFA. First and foremost, you can forget about all your previous skills that you may have acquired from previous PES series. The new gameplay takes some getting used to, especially the new camera angle. There is no tele angle which showed most of the playing field panning side to side following the controlling player/ball. It is now been replaced with "wide" angle with options to follow the ball or the players. When you're deep inside the opponent's half trying to provide crosses, the angle is skewed much like the "broadcast" angle that you really can't see your players waiting inside the box with a quick glance, so you really have to rely on radar. However, with practice and some getting used to, it quickly became a non-issue. The gameplay is much more realistic and fluid with no "ball sticking" that plagued previous PES series. Passing now requires well timed direction and control with power gauge indicator. But most importantly, thru-passes work in PES unlike FIFA. I can pin point and execute thru passes between defenders and experience the gratification of forwards receiving them leading to a potential goal. There are definite differences on players' mobility and skills when you're controlling a top player as opposed to other players. Messi can out run and execute some deadly feints to get past a defender, Drogba can bully couple of defenders with his size and strength, and other players' real life skills are accurately portrayed in PES 2011.

Online play is more accessible now with instant game matching within Exhibition menu as opposed to drilling down inside Online menu. I did not experience any noticeable lags even with subpar network connections. The new game plan (tactics/strategy) with drag-and-drop interface is so easy and intuitive that I find myself tinkering with different settings - something that I haven't done often in previous PES. Feint settings where you can combo series of feint moves with the right stick is also a welcome addition and fun to watch.

Sadly, this game isn't perfect. There are some glitches or short-comings:

- I lost control of my players when I accidentally pressed series of buttons on my controller. CPU took over and was controlling both teams as if the game is running in demo mode. I regained full control after a dead ball. Fortunately, I've only experienced this once.

- There are some graphic "tearing" when players are near or inside the goal. They go through the goal net with some eerie effects.

- Penalty kick system should be completely gutted and reworked. I really liked FIFA's "metered" or "gauged" controlled penalty kick system.

Minor issues aside, I'm enjoying PES 2011 more than FIFA 2011 and I think it's unfortunate that PES 2011 don't get the credit or fair reviews that it deserves from the game review community. You could find a number of high reviews for FIFA but only a handful of lukewarm reviews on PES. Not that I rely on these so called professional game reviewers' verdicts dictate my purchasing decisions but still, I think it's a shame.

Pros:
1. Realistic gameplay and physics without sacrificing fun factor in soccer simulation game
2. Ease of menu navigation and game plan (tactics) settings
3. Reliable, quick and fun online gameplay
4. Does not require online access code you have to enter like FIFA

Cons:
1. The new gameplay and camera angles take some time getting used to
2. Some graphic glitches but this could be ironed out on future updates
3. Bad, inconsistent penalty shootout system

Overall, PES 2011 is a step in right direction and despite some minor issues, it's still a fun game that you should definitely experience.
