Lords Of The Realm II Review

Lords Of The Realm II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This certainly isn't the most exciting game I've played. I had thought it rather simple, until last night when I was explaining it to my roommate who was amazed at the level of detail you could go to. (I don't think he had ever seen any of the Sims games.)

The game is one of strategy, and you'll only enjoy it if you're a medieval buff. In the most general terms, you must conquer all of the counties within a country and become King. There are two smaller kingdoms, and then you hit the real ones: Ireland, England, France, Germany, Italy, and an area they refer to as The Crusades. In order to conquer the counties, you need to manage several things: taxes, weapon building, army building and maneuvering, forestry, castle building and a number of other specifics to build your own budding empire. You need to keep the people that live in your county happy, and this means that they need to eat, and that the appropriate level of taxation exists. If they are unhappy enough, they will revolt, and flee - and you will have lost your county.

When it comes to battles - and there are many - you can choose to either direct the skirmishes yourself (as most do, I'm sure), or in the interest of time you can "autocalc" the battle. The computer then looks at both armies, and determines which should win based on the combatants. For example, if one army contains one hundred peasants, one hundred swordsmen, and one hundred knights; and they face an army with one hundred swordsmen, one hundred macemen, and one hundred knights, the second army will win easily. Why? peasants wield pitchforks.

Product Description:
Lords of the Realm II is a mixture of turn-based county and economic management and real-time combat. As the game begins, the king has died and 5 nobles (including yourself) are vying for control of the realm, including the noble Baron, the headstrong Knight, the ice princess The Countess, and the backstabbing Bishop. You have to hold on to your counties by building larger castles and keeping the peasantry happy and well-fed. When you engage your enemy in battle is when the real fun starts. You are given a Warcraft-type view of the battlefield with the units in your army and have to either get them to retreat (a rarity) or kill every last one of the little buggers. In a siege, you can end the battle by capturing the enemy's flag or dispatching all of your opponents soldiers to the great big Realm in the sky.

Incredible.Just got my copy today.I'm blown away. This is not some race-around-and-smash-other cars game like the EA Nascar games, this is pure simulation. The physics model is incredible. The graphics are top notch... includes D3D *and* OpenGL.Attention to detail in the physics department is why I liked the demo, and what prompted me to pick up the boxed retail. If you fall behind a bit, or can't figure out the optimum path through a corner, you've got a lot of catching up to do.If you don't care about tweaking tire pressure, camber, weight distribution, I really wouldn't bother.Go pick up a fun arcade game like Colin McRae 2.If you dig the *whole* experience, give Papyrus its due and pick this one up.

3D Ultra Pinball Creep Night (Jewel Case) Review

3D Ultra Pinball Creep Night

I have always been a pinball lover, but was skeptical to try pinball software. Would it really be like playing the machine? With this software package, the answer clearly is yes. Yes! And what a surprise the animationsand graphics have been. Little goblins whith wiggeling butts tease you toshoot at them, monsters show up out of the wood work, ghosts snatch yourball or take you to a cemetary to shoot skeletons ... It'll take a while todiscover all the little surprises each of the three tables has in store foryou. And just when you thought you had it all figured out, you just mightdiscover a little extra memory game where you have goblins ringing bells, the sequence of which you have to copy, or a monster shows up where youhave never seen one before. Switch between the tables during the game orstick with the one you're on, in either case you're in for hours of fun.

Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls Review

Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Shivers 2, falling squarely in the family of point-and-click adventure/puzzle games, is a somewhat flawed but enjoyable, very challenging, and immersive journey. The premise of the game is that your friends, a rock band, went to a little town in the middle of nowhere to film a music video (after they earn enough money to pick up the tab, that is).. You go to visit them and find the town to be more or less deserted with the exception of a female ghost popping up now and then and some wacko running around in a stupid mask (i.e. your nemesis for this little adventure). The goal is simple: save your friends from the wacko. How do you go about that? The same as most games of its type...explore the town and solve a bunch of puzzles.
The gameplay is basically point-and-click. You look at objects. You explore areas. You solve a lot of puzzles (mostly of the extremely difficult brain teaser variety rather than the "find this item and use it here" type). Why anyone would lock their door with some horribly difficult puzzle that takes half an hour to solve is beyond me, but it's all part of the game. An extra bit worth noting is that the game actually allows you to watch music videos by your friends on television sets. The band, in all their infinite wisdom, decided to play detective and place clues to various puzzles in their music videos (haven't I seen this cartoon?). Not only are the music videos enjoyable to watch, but piecing together solutions to the clues with them and various other hints around town adds a bit of immersiveness to the game. Another touch of immersiveness comes from the fact that throughout the game, you yourself are playing detective. You actually search for personal info about the various people of the town and get to know them and study their interactions in an attempt to get to the bottom of the mystery and figure out the identity of the wacko in the stupid mask who may or may not be behind everything. It's not an easy task, though.. You'll likely need a notebook (and possibly a walkthrough) by your side and a significant amount of time to solve all of the puzzles and the mystery (although you can cheat and have the puzzles solve themselves at the cost of some points in your score)..
As for graphics, this game is a bit dated. It's over 5 years old, afterall. You have low resolution graphics, with the main game screen being displayed as a small box in the middle of your monitor. Still, they're sufficient enough that they don't take away much from the game. Also, the members of the band and their appearances and personalities actually fit their music and vibe perfectly (and the music videos actually look like music videos), so kudos to the development team for creating both visual and emotional character realism.
The sound is spectacular. The occasional background tunes and ambient sound are well done, and the rock music that appears in the music videos by your friends is amazing (and also included in audio CD format on the second disc!). I found myself watching the videos several times just for the music, and actually repeatedly listening to the soundtrack CD portion of the 2nd disc when not playing the game.
Now onto the major flaws of the game. The main flaw is that it's not scary at all. "Shivers" is quite the misnomer. While it does involve the supernatural, it's more of a mystery than a horror game. The second flaw is that the 2nd disc was somewhat buggy. It was perfectly playable until I reached one timed puzzle that repeatedly flew by in a fraction of the time it was supposed to take. The company didn't have a solution to the problem, and I ended up copying the answer from a walkthrough just so I could barely make it through the puzzle before time ran out.
Shivers 2 is an enjoyable and immersive game for those on a budget, especially those looking for a more thought-provoking puzzle/mystery-oriented experience. You'll find challenging gameplay and a bonus soundtrack of great music. Not bad at all for the price..

Empire Earth Review

Empire Earth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can still remember when I played the original AGE OF EMPIRES, wondering to myself if they would be able to make the same general strategy game using modern weaponry. As I loved the original AE, I held out hope that they would someday be able to pull it off.
Well, there is no reason to wonder anymore:our friends at SIERRA have done it. EMPIRE EARTH and its expansion set (both included in EE GOLD) takes us all the way from the dawn of mankind up thru the modern age and even into the future with spaceship and robotic battles and the like.
For myself, the most satisfying component of the game is being able to play with modern-day weapons. Build tanks, artillery and various troops for huge land battles.Build air-forces with fighters and bombers.Build navies with submarines, aircraft carriers, battleships and frigates.
Your civilians form the backbone of your military apparatus as they're the ones who collect the necessary resources (i.e.:wood, food, gold, stone, iron, etc) for your campaigns. You're the one in charge;how you utilize your resources is up to you.If you fail, you're the one who is accountable. If you are victorious, you're the one who deserves all the accolades and glory!
The most remarkable thing about the game for me is its symmetry. There is no one single "unstoppable" weapon in your arsenal. The most powerful weapon is the B-52, with which you can nuke your enemies. However, you had better protect it with great care;send it by itself on long-range bombing sorties and it's sure to be shot down by enemy fighters, anti-aircraft batteries or soldiers with STINGER missiles.
You may create TRIDENT submarines with powerful cruise missiles that can strike targets deep inland. However, these submarines are also the easiest for your enemies to sink:protect them at all costs!
Apache helicopters are devastating against tanks and other land targets, but are highly vulnerable to STINGERS and are downright helpless against enemy jet fighters. Jet fighters are susceptible to the fierce fire of anti-aircraft batteries. However, anti-aircraft batteries are hapless against tanks. All units have their strong points, and all units have their weaknesses, be they ground, sea or air.
If you like strategy games, I cannot recommend EE enough. If you like building armies, blowing stuff up and upgrading the prowess of your military, this is certainly the game for you.Just beware:it's about the most addictive game you will ever play!

This is my favorite old PC game! The storyline, characters, and settings are all so well-developed that it is mindblowing; as a kid, it was easy to get completely lost in this game. It's a shame that it was never updated to run on the newer operating systems, because this is really a gem. It might seem a little slow these days, but I think that it is still a great game.

The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions Review

The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Every once in a while, a company manages to release a simple puzzle solving or trivia based PC game that hooks a dedicated fan base everywhere. The Incredible Machine series is one of those titles. The Even More Contraptions edition comes with approximately two hundred puzzles arranged in order of difficulty and an editor that allows you to make your own contraptions.
If you're not familiar with the Incredible Machine series, it's a layman mechanical engineer's dream. If you've ever watched a movie with a stereotypical nutty professor that has a contraption set up involving ten to twenty devices all reacting to each other in a "domino chain" to complete one simple task you already have an idea what the puzzles are like.In other words, a can opener with a can of tuna causing a cat to move which pulls a string that starts a fan which blows a wind chime that somehow turns on the TV. :D
That's how the puzzles are set up but many of the key components are left out and provided to the gamer to figure out how to get the device to work and complete the goals listed. Many times your solution is completely different from the given solution and the game doesn't limit your creativity.Over a hundred different pieces are including various gears, fire starting devices, animals, platforms, floating mechanisms, etc.Only a few picked by the original programmer are included in each puzzle but if you make your own puzzles you can pick from any device in the game.
There are also various websites set up by fans that allow you to download different creations.A fun game that you can keep coming back to as you attempt to complete the many puzzles provided.

SWAT 4: Special Weapons and Tactics Review

SWAT 4: Special Weapons and Tactics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Despite what some say, SWAT 4 delivers as it is supposed to. If you were a SWAT 3 fan, then say hello to SWAT 4, a more graphically advanced edition with some AWESOME control and a much improved "drop down" command menu, including the ability to command a "red" and "blue" element at different times, or the WHOLE element at once.

The bad guys are smarter, sneak up on you, and change positions. Some give up easily, others run, and others fight back. It's replay value is AWESOME, and Im sure multiplayer is just unreal...I just havent had the time to get to it yet since Im on mission 5 of the single player!!

This is not meant to be a Max Payne or Half Life 2 game, its a stricly "SWAT" oriented game, slow in pace, much like a Splinter Cell. This is NOT a run and gun, its a strategic first person shooter for SWAT series fans.

Be aware that it takes a few minutes to set up the keyboard the way that is most comfortable, and you may change the config a few times in the control panel before you set it for good. Having the controls set up to where you can access all commands easily is key to keeping this game exciting and not annoying!

The system requirements arent too bad...but PCGAMER reccommends a 2.4ghz P4 and a 128mb graphics card. For reference, Im running it on a 3.4ghz Extreme Edition CPU, 1 GB of RAM, an X800 XT 256mb graphics card, and surround sound.

Product Description:
Looking for a tactical shooter that asks you to do more than charge a building, guns a' blazin'? With a focus on sparing as many lives as possible, SWAT 4 not only raises the stakes, it raises the realism to a new level. Choose your loadout carefully and only go lethal when all else fails and the lives of innocents or a squad member are at stake.
In SWAT 4, you're the leader, nicknamed "Boss," and it's your job to command three other specialists through a variety of missions in every corner of a perilous, crime-infested city. Your special weapons and tactics squad consists of basic specialist types, an Assaulter, a Breacher, a Scout and a Non-lethal Specialist. These specialists can be customized to your tastes, and you can pick weapons that suit your mission objectives and plan. In keeping with SWAT 4's focus on non-lethal, life-preserving engagements, you can choose weapons such as tasers, flashbang grenades, and a bean bag-hurling shotgun. Of course, many situations turn hot, and the baddies you'll face will be well armed, so there is a complete selection of lethal firepower, as well.
Your missions will focus on neutralizing criminal elements and taking as many suspects into custody as possible. How you do that is up to you, but the game demands restraint, stealth and an eye for gaining the tactical advantage over opponents. You'll use items like the "Optiwand" to look around corners and under doors to scout for foes, before rushing in and subduing a suspect with pepper spray, CS gas or, if things turn ugly, live rounds. Be careful, though; killing innocents will end your mission immediately.
As squad leader, you make the ultimate calls about whether to enter rooms, open fire, or retreat. You'll command three other capable comrades with the only goal of keeping people alive. SWAT 4's intuitive command system will have you giving orders and organizing your team effectively in no time. All commands are contextual, meaning the game provides possible options depending on the situation you're in. This allows you to make decisions quickly, because when lives are at stake and the action heats up, one thing you don't have is a lot of time.
The SWAT franchise is well known for great multi-player action, and SWAT 4 is no exception. You can play online in one of three modes, Barricaded Suspects, V.I.P. Escort, or Rapid Deployment. Each mode comes with unique challenges and makes special demands on your powers of cooperation and command. Keep a cool head, and keep the body bags to a minimum.

Space Quest Collection Review

Space Quest Collection
Average Reviews:

I bought a couple of these re-release sets over the years trying to make them work on newer computers. Vivendi finally took some time here to polish up these games and get them working on modern hardware. I have tested and played through the intro to each of these games and did some basic gameplay.

Vivendi has licensed a program called DosBox to act as middleware between DOS emulation and Windows XP. This means the games finally run properly on new computers. The sound is properly redirected through sound cards under Windows. Even the beeps and bleeps of the PC speaker sound from Space Quest II come through on my Sound Blaster Audigy 2. I had not been able to play the sound for Space Quest III since I sold my old 486 about 8 years ago.

The games also play at the proper speed. No longer does the character move at light-speed regardless of the setting you make in the game. The games all seem to be playable and enjoyable. Included in the set is the VGA remake of Space Quest I, the talking CD-ROM version of Space Quest IV, and the CD-ROM version of Space Quest VI. It might have been nice to see the other versions of those games included, but the quality of what has been included here is first rate. There is also a manual included in PDF format from one of the earlier releases of the anthology.

Thank you Vivendi for resurrecting some of my favorite adventure games from my childhood and for taking the time to make a polished interface to make them work properly!! I hope the rest of the Sierra games will be released soon. You certainly can't beat the price for these at all!

I also bought the King's Quest Compilation and I expect it to be just as great based on my impressions of the Space Quest Compilation.

Police Quest Collection Review

Police Quest Collection
Average Reviews:

I love PQ1-Police Quest: Open Season. After Open Season it got bad. Daryl Gates's Open Season was eary and very tough, I needed the hint book. The only problem I have with this compilation is PQ1. I hated the VGA version (remake) and hoped both EGA and VGA were on the cd's. Unfortunatly EGA was left out. Similar to Leisure Suit Larry 1. I was very disapointed with both remakes of PQ1 and Leisure Suit Larry 1.
Police Quest 1 dealt with the Death Angel Jesse Baines. You are Sonny Bonds regular police officer patrolling the streets until you get promoted to detective and try to track down the death angel. The ending was great and one of a kind. The hotel was the final (would of been the final meeting with Baines) part of the game. After you play poker for alittle while, you recognize Baines across from you and when you go back up to his hotel suite LOOK OUT!. Police Quest 2 had a different take on PQ1. You are thrown once again into the Death Angels clutches when Baines escapes jail and swore his revenge on Sonny Bonds, The classic writing to issue a command was great. The ending was terrific where you had to difuse a bomb as well as meet Baines again in a different city. PQ3 was also oe of my favorites. The graphics were much improved and you again were Sonny Bonds but your true love Marie (who you met in PQ1 but Sonny knew her before that) was stabbed by a visious gang (part of an occult). From patrolling the streets to becoming detective, Sonny is once again seeking all the answers and trying to stay calm and hope Marie recoperates after getting stabbed and left in critical condition. PQ 4 Open Season takes you out of Lytton as well as Sonny Bonds's shoes and into a detective who works in Los Angeles. This one is very ear, gorry (back in those times), and took you to different places. Once the PQ series switched to SWAt it was terrible, Jim Walls, please come back! If Police Quest was resurrected now the graphics and gameplay would be amazing. Imagine sitting on the highway with a radar gun pulling over people, respondonding to a bank robbery ect...

Zeus: Master of Olympus Review

Zeus: Master of Olympus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I finally got my hands on a copy of Zeus, and it surely doesn't disappoint. First off I noticed that this game plays very similar to Pharaoh. The animations of the characters that walk around have been slightly improved, but the biggest leap forward is the animations of the gods who walk around your city. Those are some of the best looking sprites I have EVER seen in any game, great job on those. Another aspect of the game which I love is all the little soundbites in the game. I spent hours clicking on everything I could to hear what they have to say, most of the time its really funny. Not only that you hear the strangest comments during the game, one that stands out is I always seem to hear someone saying, "Where's my spear, how can I be a spear carrier without my spear". Just little things like that make the game exciting. As for the monument building side of this game, it does take a lot less time than building a pyramid did in Pharaoh, but don't get me wrong, we are still talking hours in some cases, not that I mind. Some of the original new parts of this game is that you can blackmail and attack other city states if you wish. Everytime I have tried thus far I usually come out on the losing end mainly cause of to small a force. The campaign structure part of the game is a little different than past city builders in that you have these smaller Adventures which don't take nearly as long. Some are a little to easy, but I still think this is a great idea for future player created adventures. What can I say, I just love this game, it expands on all other city builders, looks great, sounds great, and any game that keeps me up till 3am four consecutive nights has my vote for a great game!
