Shogun: Total War Warlord Edition Review

Shogun: Total War Warlord Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of the original Shogun with its Risk-like turn-based strategy combined with real-time battles, so I rushed right out and bought a copy of the Warlord Edition (the expansion is also supposed to be available for download at a reduced price to those who own the original). The Warlord Edition is well worth the $..., however. There are several new troop types, including the Mongol hords -- the firebombers are nasty little dudes -- and the new Japanese troops include the mystical battlefield Ninjas and devistating sword saint, a one-person wreaking crew.
A couple of things I really like about the expansion: no more "landscape drift," your camera stays where you point it, and several new campaign scenarios. Under the old game, you basically had one starting point for a full campaign, with Japan basically divided equally between seven clans. Now, you have the option of four different starting points on a full campaign, including one with the Mongols invading Japan, and you also have four shorter "historical campaigns," in which you take over a clan during a period in Japan's history.
A couple of minor annoyances: The manual is still not very good. Get old Prima strategy guide if you're unfamiliar with Shogun. Also, in an apparent attempt to make the game historically accurate, not all troop types are available for all campaigns. For example, warrior monks and the rifle troops are not availablewhen you're playing the Warlord Campaign vs. the Mongols.
But overall, this is a very worthy addition to my favorite game ever.

Panzer General Review

Panzer General
Average Reviews:

Panzer General is one of the war games released by SSI in the mid 90's based on those hex mapped games you may have seen people playing in the 80's.I had an uncle into those earlier table top games, and I could NEVER figure out just what he was doing.
Panzer General is the computerized version of that, and with its intuitive interface and easy to understand controls, this game is untold hours of fun and stratagem.
I have played it over and again, from different starting points, and you never play the same game twice even if you come back and fo it all over again. This is not only fun war gaming (Think Advanced Wars without the cartoon character commanders) but it is infinitely replayable.
I thought this one had been lost to the advance of OS - as in it doesnt play well in XP, or Vista, but I found a little program to create a better dosbox, and with it, this game has found new life in my house. If you want to try it out, you can get it here:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1
I would HIGHLY suggest, if you havent tried this one out, do it.Panzer General is a MUST play game for strategy fans.

Panzer General II Review

Panzer General II

Panzer General is the fountain head for WWII gaming!I realize that this game does not have the "rockets red glare" of other simuation games; however, one can play hours upon hours and not get bored.Further, you do not require a Ph D to understand the instructions nor do you need three hands to play it!

Generally speaking, this game is accurate as it relates to the kinetics and capabilities of the weapon systems found in the game.Further, the rules of combined arms apply as do the principles of war... i.e. security, massing, counter fire, intelligence (via scouts, etc,.

What makes PG even more enjoyable is that there are PG groups on the web that have created more units, equipment, scenarios and campaigns to include non-historical ones that let's one fight hypothetical battles... I recommend that you go on the web and search the sites - this will give you a feel of the game and graphical representations... this should add to your decision cycle further...

The bottom line is that it's an easy game to play, fun and addictive!

MATRIX Uncommon Valor: Campaign for the South Pacific Review

MATRIX Uncommon Valor: Campaign for the South Pacific
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this as Christmas present. I like cardboard counters/mapboard wargames, and this game is a computer version of a mapboard wargame, similar in concept to Panzer General series.
It features south pacific area (from Rabaul to Noumea, including east Australia bases), with allied coastwatchers and beaches (that can be owned by the players). You can assemble/dissassemble TFs, assign new commanders to TFs, command every historical plane squadron in different types of missions (naval search, recon of specific objective, ground or naval attack, training...) and also command battalions of ground forces and base units to attack the enemy (or improve your facilities).
Ships can be ordered different kind of missions, like combat surface, naval bombardment of bases, mining missions...and, even though you can leave the TF commander free (the computer IA) to choose when to sail for the base to resupply for fuel or supplies...each base keeps track of the supplies and fuel, as well as of each units' experience, fatigue and morale.
The worst of the game is the graphics and sound, graphics are just "enough" good, and sounds are really bad. Also, another point against the game is that, with the option "combat animation" set on, each turn is really slow, and well, the combat animations themselves are just a few "flashes" to indicate gun firing, and a few graphics for ships' fires, or flak...they're something you might want to look at the first time, then set them off for faster play.
My advice : if you like&enjoy mapboard wargames (like Flat Top) you'll like this one, or if you like games like Panzer General (turn based strategy games)you might as well like this one, even though its slower game pace related to Panzer General 2 or 3D. Otherwise, if you're looking for something like command and conquer, look elsewhere, this one's not for you. I rated it 4 stars because i love mapboard wargames and this one is much similar, otherwise, compared to other games (like Total War Medieval, or similar), it would rate much less...

My daughter and I are addicted.Best city building game I have ever used. Easy and not over detailed, takes plenty of planning so you have to play the game multiple times to get it right. ALways a challenge no matter how many time youplay it. Once you play you are hooked. DOnt bother with Pharaoh, its the same game, different graphics. I find the other city building games too detailed or stress too much war/battling.This would have been a great game in 7th grade to to learn all the mythology. They need a NOrse version!

It was great to finally get to buy Shogun, it was the original game in the great Total War series and I just thought that I had to own it. At first its strange to get used to the controls but in the end they work just the same.

The graphics aren't comparable to todays' graphics but they shouldn't be. Shogun came out in 2000 and the graphics are just fine for a game from that year. The gameplay is fun and I also like that the game takes place in the interesting period known as the Sengoku Jidai (The Age of the Country at War). Shogun makes for a great game. I recommend it to players of the Total War series who are interested in the roots of the series...

Panzer General II Review

Panzer General II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If survival is a measure of quality, then PZG 2 must stand with the greatest computer games ever made. It was a great example of "brilliance in simplicity" when it was released and time has not in any way diminished its laurels. In an age when even thinking-man's games are often judged on bells and whistles rather than user-friendliness and enjoyability, it's refreshing to have one at hand that combines the ease-of-play of an action shooter with all the mental challenges you'd demand from a game of strategy.

Simply described, PANZER GENERAL 2 is a tactical-strategic game set in WW 2, which allows the player to choose either individual, one-and-done scenarios from various points between 1938 - 1945 or fight out whole, multi-scenario campaigns that took place during the war. (Individual units are at the regimental level, which allows the player to fight corps or army-size battles). Gamers may select from any of the five campaigns:

British: Follows a British army in NW Europe from 1943 - 1945, with special emphasis on the Normandy battles. A fairly short campaign, maybe five scenarios.

American: Follows the American army in NW Europe from 1943 - 1945. Another short campaign, beginning at Salerno and ending at Dessau. (Closely mirrors the British campaign.)

Russian: Follows the Soviet Army from winter 1941 to the assault on Berlin in 1945. Five scenarios or so.

German: "Blitzkrieg" - follows the German Wehrmacht from the Spanish Civil War in 1938 through most of its victorious campaigns in Poland, Norway, France, Greece, Russia, Africa, etc. This is by far the most detailed of the campaigns, and can go up to or past 17 different scenarios, including some great "What-Ifs" including the invasions of Malta, England and America (if you do really well). "Defending the Reich", on the other hand, is a defensive campaign which begins at Stalingrad and leads you through battles at Stalingrad, Salerno, Kursk, Normandy, and Hungary. It offers the German player the challenge of saving Hitler's empire for him, against overwhelming odds.

PZG 2 is built primarily as a campaign game, meaning that the player starts out with a corps or "family" of units which follow him from scenario to scenario (assuming they survive), and also allows him to acquire new units as time goes on. A very impressive and well-researched array of aircraft, tanks, armored fighting vehicles, artillery pieces, infantry units, and so on are available for every side to draw upon. In addition, a detailed requisition board synced into the game's play-clock allows you to upgrade your weapons as time goes on, so that units fighting in 1944 don't have to use 1939 weaponry. Tough combat situations add experience to your units, and extraordinary feats on the battlefield produce "leaders" who lend elite qualities to their units such as tenacity on defense, double attack, etc. In addition, a scenario-builder allows you to design your own games using not only the major combatants but also Hungarians, Poles, Finns, etc. Once you have the game down, this can be a hell of a lot of fun (say, America vs. USSR, 1946!).

PZG 2 was designed to be intuitive, and requires very little in the way of brow-furrowing to master. Movement, fighting, supply, etc. are all very fluid and idiot-proof, allowing you to concentrate on your battle tactics. Unlike many "strategy" games which favor mindless use of brute force or crazy speed, this one demands that you pay some homage to Clausewitz - concentrate your forces, stick to your objective, mind your clock and guard your flanks (failure to do so may result in embarrassing side effects, such as a*s-kicking). While the game's AI isn't exactly on the Brianiac level, it is more than clever enough on defense to give you fits, and has an eerie knack for finding your weak spot and driving a few regiments of tanks through it.

A last benefit: the engines used to power PZG 2 are so simple that numerous downloadable campaigns, with upgraded weaponry and sound, are available for free on the Internet, once you've exhausted all the possibilities of the game itself. But since that takes a couple of years, don't feel rushed. This classic has stood the test of more than ten years in a market where most games are forgotten in a month. It can wait.

Great game!My favorite is the P-51 Mustang!Realistic aircraft.Excellent graphics.Single mission option allows you to do flight training, i.e., landing, takeoff and navigation. In addition you can fly training missions in strafing, bombing and firing rockets at targets with on-screen instructions. When you get comfortable with these missions (if you're a new-comer) you can progress to actual missions on specific campaigns or build your own personal missions, if you like.I've tried MS Combat Flight Sim, Figher Aces and a couple of others.I've yet to see a WWII Fighter game that tops this one!You can't go wrong with it, especially at this price!

The Ultimate History of Video Games: From Pong to Pokemon--The Story Behind the Craze That Touched Our Lives and Changed the World Review

The Ultimate History of Video Games: From Pong to Pokemon--The Story Behind the Craze That Touched Our Lives and Changed the World
Average Reviews:

I've been playing video games for 20 years now. I began with the Atari, saw the market crash, grew up with Nintendo, and got caught up in the 90's proliferation of newer and hotter systems. I know a great deal about the industry, yet this book puts my knowledge to shame.

Exhaustively researched and crammed ridiculously full of information, anecdotes, and hundreds of direct quotes from every walk of video game life, this book is worth more than one read-through. My copy is well-worn because I find it so easy to take with me on plane trips and just start reading through at random points. It's written in a very friendly, conversational tone and engages you with its prose. The book is extremely interesting because the author is clearly interested in the subject himself. He manages to get the kind of details and answer the type of questions you'd want to know, yet stays very thorough and accurate throughout.

Loads of different subjects are covered, sometimes at great length: The bar where Pong was first tested. Nintendo's lawsuit against Galoob's Game Genie. Tengen illegally producing Nintendo games and the big N's forceful prosecution. The battles over Donkey Kong and Tetris. The founding of Electronic Arts. Sega's mid 90's dominance and slip of the cd based systems. The furor over Mortal Kombat. School shootings. I can't list enough, and I can't go on enough about it. This book is extremely comprehensive and covers the entire video game industry and all its major players chronologically from the 70s until the turn of the century. It's well-written, accurate (given all those direct insider quotes) and completely objective. One of the best things about it is the fact that it gives details of so many things from my video game youth, such as the first Nintendo commercials, as well as the good old days of parents rampaging through stores for a copy of the "low supply" games. Aside from interesting industry information, this book helped me reminisce.

I've read "Game Over" (the only book comparable to this one on the subject, though it centers on Nintendo), "Phoenix, the Fall and Rise of Videogames, "Masters of Doom", and several other video game books. Honestly, this one still entertains me after four years. Though it ends at about the dawn of the PS2 and Xbox, it covers so much history and gives so many informative, interesting, and humorous stories that it really does deserve the title "Ultimate". Forgive me for not being more objective, but I must shrug and stick to my story. At 500 pages, and with such a wealth of information about so many familiar faces, companies, and games, I just find this to be the best book on the subject without question. Absolutely worth checking out for any video game player.

Speilberg does with Medal of Honor to the video gaming world what he did to the film world with Saving Private Ryan and what the History Channel does 24 hours a day: reinterested America with the Second World War. I haven't played a good shoot-em-up since Wolfenstein 3-D, and brother,it's been too long. This game excels at everything: top notch controls (useboth analog sticks, trust me, just do it), graphics (some minor clippingprobs, but hey, it's a Playstation), and gameplay (ooooooooh yes),authentic weaponry (no bogus gun names here... Browning, Walther, Colt,Thompson, Panzershrek, these are the real deal), behind the scenes detail(original artwork, your charatcter's training records and collegetranscript) but what really drew me in was the sound. The ambientbackground noise - dogs barking, planes flying overhead, German commandersshouting orders - not only make you feel like you're behind enemy lines, but you actually believe it, while the superb and unparalleled soundtrackmakes those enemy lines feel like they're in a classic war film. My adviceto you is to also purchase theaccompanying music CD, it's that bloody good.Hopefully this will spawn a new revolution in historical-based period piecevideo games instead of the cookie-cutter action games set in the presentand near future. Congratulations Dreamworks Interactive, you've made mycentury.

Call of Duty Review

Call of Duty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Call of Duty (CoD) is a true sequel to Medal of Honour: Allied Assault. If you have played MoHAA, you'd know that it is atmospheric and exhilarating. Who can forget the Omaha Beach level? If you think MoHAA is good, wait till you try CoD.
There are 3 campaigns in CoD though you don't get to choose which to start first. You start as Private Martin (USA) and play through a few levels.. the most exciting for me is to hold a particular bridge from invasion. Later you play as Evans a British SAS. The 3rd campaign, the best I have seen by far, is playing as a Russian soldier.
The Russian campaign is an exact depiction of one part from the movie "Enemy of the Gates". In the movie, the Russian troops fight to take back Starlingrad. Any Russians who retreated will be killed by their own soldiers. This was depicted exactly in one of the levels in CoD. Lots of soldiers swarming from the boat up the hills with just one gun and one ammo clip - almost like MoHAA's Omaha but more atmospheric and much more exciting.
Graphics-wise, CoD uses Quake 3 engine. It is a bit dated as compared to the today's new generation graphics engine but in my opinion, the graphics served it purpose. I owned a Pentium 3 with Geforce 4 card and CoD runs like a dream. It is games like CoD (and recently, Max Payne 2) which convinced me that game content and gameplay are what matters most. Not the graphics! Some games have excellent graphics but lack content. These are the type of games I'd install and uninstall in less than 10 minutes.
The world in CoD is so lifelike it's scary. The AI is excellent. Your team mates and enemies fight like real soldiers. Bullets flew all over the screen and you can see the traces of them .. or hear them - sometimes I had to "duck" in front of my PC just to avoid them - kinda silly but it shows how into the game I was.
All in all, an excellent game!!! A definite must-get!

I picked up Medieval II Total War / Total War Kingdoms Gold Pack for $30 and I have to say, for that price it's a great deal. There are months of gameplay packed into this game.I was up until 4am, 4 nights in a row!

Concept: 9/10
In Medieval 2GP, you play as 1 of 17 different Factions / Nations in an attempt to use diplomacy, treachery, and military might to take over the world. The game features a Battle Mode where you can fight a Battle against AI, a Short Campaign where you must wipe out 1 or 2 rival nations and occupy a good portion of the world map, or a Grand Campaign, where you must occupy Jerusalem and a very large portion of the world. The "Short" Campaign could take you anywhere from 8 - 40 hours to finish. With the expansions, there are more maps, 13 more Factions, and 110 more military units...There is also a dedicated Modding community that has further enhanced the game.

Graphics: 8/10
The graphics are impressive on the high settings and it's pretty incredible to watch 4000 soldiers clash on the battlefield with arrows raining from the sky and catapults destroying fully destructible cities.
NOTE:I had an awful time getting my NVidia 7900GT to work with this game, but I finally found the solution on a forum.Creative Assembly's and SEGA's websites were less helpful than a Magic 8 Ball.I'll post the solution in the Comments Section below.

Gameplay: 7/10
There are three types of gameplay in the game. There is a World Map where you can move armies and units across a battlefield and into enemy territories. You strategically use diplomats, merchants, religious figures, spies, assassins, princesses, and armies to thwart your opposing nations. This plays out like old school RISK.

There is faction management, where you govern your cities, raise or lower taxes, build structures that provide troops and upgrades for your army, balance your budget, put your leaders in the most optimal places, and assemble your armies.Your Heirs, Commanders, and Governors have stats... some make great generals, some make great governors. It's up to you to put them in the right places. If you have a brother in-law who is a weak commander and not very loyal, you can send him off to fight the Mongols Far Far away from your homeland.Think of it as chlorine in your family gene pool. You don't want his offspring inheriting your kingdom.

There are the battles. The battles are fought between units in an RTS, rock, paper, scissors, type of battle.Archers are great at long range, Horsemen can run over the archers, spearmen can set themselves in a defensive formation and impale a cavalry charge. There are also infantry (swordsmen) who fare well against the spearmen. There are literally hundreds of different types of units. There are open field battles in different types of environments, mountains, snow, forests...
There are castle sieges where you must use catapults, rams, ladders, siege towers, to take over a walled city. And there are castle sieges where you must defend your city from invaders.During a battle, you can also pause the action and issue commands, or speed it up 2x - 6x so you don't have to wait for the troops to get into position.

If you want to play the game RISK style, you can have the AI simulate the battles and get a results screen that says something like:Victory, you lost 200 men, the enemy lost 650 men.
If you want to play the game like an RTS, you can have the AI govern your cities, while you fight the battles. It was a great idea to cater the game to both styles of play.

Strategies:8/10
The AI is pretty simple in the game, and once you figure out how to play, you will rarely lose a battle. You can use units and the terrain to your advantage.Unlike Starcraft, you don't have to kill every enemy on the battlefield. You can break their morale and get them to run away.If you see a bunch of enemy swordsmen, you can pepper them with arrows and kill half of them as they are charging, then run them down (literally) with heavy calvary. The game displays their morale and you can see when they are about to break. When they flee, you can let them retreat, or run them down to finish them off.

On the World Map, you can hide your armies in the woods to ambush enemies, or position them in choke points to halt enemy advances. If you are at war with another Christian Faction, the Pope may order you to cease fire for a few turns, which usually allows the enemy to regroup and counterattack. But you can actually destroy an enemy city without attacking it.Send spies, and assassins to take out the governor, kill the militia, and the citizens could riot and rebel against their king.If you have a charming princess, you can marry an enemy general into your family, stealing their army... or you can send diplomats to negotiate with your enemy and harm their economy. There are many ways to topple an enemy town. You can even form an alliance with another nation, and use spies and assassins on them if you don't get caught. If they declare war on you, the Pope may excommunicate them for violating the alliance, or even launch a Holy Crusade against them! How you conquer your enemies is completely up to you.

Interface Screens: 5/10
Switching screens to manage your cities is pretty clunky and it seems that you have to click to 3 different screens to gather information before you make a decision. This gets a little irritating after a while because it feels like everything is 3 clicks away, when it should be 1 click. For example, after a battle, if you decide to execute your Prisoners of war, a box appears on the far left of the screen.Left Click on the Box and it says, "Your Commander has +1 Dread" - right click to close the box.Now find your commander on the battle map, left click on him, then double right click to bring up his stats to see how much Dread he actually has and what it means. It would have been great if that first window showed my all of my commander's stats and his location.

Issues:Diplomacy.Diplomatic Negotiations are pretty broken in the game.It feels like a die roll, instead of strategy. You may ask another nation for Map Information and offer 200 gold. They may refuse and GIVE YOU 1000 GOLD.The game would have been much better if the Map Information cost X, and you had to negotiate to get X down.

Overall: 8/10
Learning the World Map and Battle Strategies is great fun and feels rewarding, but the limited AI and clunky interface keep the game from being GREAT!

The game is rated T for Alcohol References, Blood, Mild Language, a bit of innuendo, and Violence in the form of large scale battles.

Buy it cheap if you want months of light strategy and epic battles.

If you're looking for a Starcraft Killer, you should probably keep looking.

Not only do you get the full game but also the expansion pack for a reasonable price. The replay value of both titles alone definately justifies the expense. I cannot recommend this game enough. Even after almost 2 years on the market I can still pick it up every couple months and march my Legions to conquest.

Below are my comments for each game.

ORIGINAL ROME: TOTAL WAR

This is the game I've always wanted to play. It has such a superb blend of strategy and real time action. Ever play a turn based strategy game and want to really watch your troops battle it out and control the formations and tactics? Now you can. Of course there will be something people don't like, but there are many mods out there to tweak it to your exact taste. The Total War community is healthy in that there is a significant population tweaking and modding the game to your particular flavor.

Let me just say also I am not a RTS fan. I do not like "whomever clicks the fastest wins" games. Each single soldier is represented on the battlefield. It's truly amazing watching your Legions march across arid deserts, snow covered mountains to engage the enemy and clash together right in front of your eyes. Each battle is like a scene out of Braveheart or, more appropriately, Gladiator.

No other game can capture the scope of an immense battle like Rome: Total War can. Especially the battles consisting of many units, it's like an epic battle from your favorite movie.

It is not purely the battles, it has a strategy element in it to where you will manage cities, build structures and conduct diplomacy.

Overall, even if you are not a fan of Strategy or RTS games you will find this to your liking. There is so many good things about this game, it would fill many pages writing about all the pluses and things the developers did right here. A definate must have for any gamer.

BARBARIAN INVASION

The Total War community has given a lot of feedback to the developers on the improvements they would like to see. I'd say pretty much all of the biggies were addressed and added in Barbarian Invasion. Rome: Total War is hands down one of my all-time favorites and a game I can still pickup and play again and again.

There is a lot of upgraded features you would expect from an expansion...little better graphics, upgraded units and increased functionality. The upgrades to the AI are the most noticeable, in my opinion.

The Total War community waited over a year for this to be released and it is readily apparent the developers spent this time to deliver an outstanding expansion. The price tag is definately worth it as well. The time period for the expansion is set in the declining years of the Roman Empire so basically you are getting a whole new game with this expansion.

The new game element rearranges the map to take into account what has happened historically in the last three hundred years. The Roman Empire is split between west and east and all the old factions from Rome:Total War have been assimilated into the Roman Empire. An interesting historical note when the game begins for the Eastern Roman Empire is the Faction Leader Valens. His defeat against the Goths was considered a milestone in the decline of the Roman Empire (for both halves). Not only was his army defeated, but the Emperor Valens was also killed. Oh and the Goths will come for you...Oh yes, they will come.

The Parthians have been surplanted by the Sassanid Empire in the east, but essentially all the old factions have become roman provinces. Basically, it's the barbarian factions battling it out for the choice pieces of real estate.

The new expansion is noticeably harder depending on which faction you play. The Western Roman Empire is by far the most difficult which took a great deal of time to beat. Why is it so difficult? Barbarian factions with a few exceptions don't die when you take their last city - they become a Horde. This is challenging in that you can't just move through and conquer cities to annihilate the Huns, Vandals, Sarmatians, etc. You need to not only conquer all their cities but kill every single family member in order to wipe the faction from the map or they will just keep spawning as new Hordes. You must fight them out in the open which pits you against their horse archers. As you play you will find different strategies on dealing with them, but needless to say it's very fun and challenging. My personal method is the very liberal use of assassins and fortifying cities while I pick apart their horde until I get their family members eliminated.

Bottomline - 5 out of 5 and highly recommended no matter what game genre you typically lean towards. You won't regret it.
