Warcraft II - Battle.net Edition Review

Warcraft II - Battle.net Edition
Average Reviews:

Ever since I was 13 I have loved this classic real time strategy game.Although it may not have the fancy graphics or customizable characters that many RTSs can boast of today, what is does have is simplistic fun.Tolkien style fantasy war; orcs verses humans, knights verses horded monsters, heck... it even has dragons verses defenseless peasants!Have your legion of paladins ride off to expunge forces of darkness from it's goblin infested lair, or if you prefer, knock down your enemy's church and eat what you find inside!

With it's well rendered cartoon graphics, funny catch phrases, skill testing resource management, and good old fashioned explosion noises Warcraft 2 battle net edition can be fun for anyone with an eye for real time strategy.

Until somebody writes the official specs for the Amazon ad, here's what they have on the WoW website that comes with the collectors edition.

# The full game on both CD-ROM and DVD-ROM
# 1-month subscription to World of Warcraft
# The Art of World of Warcraft, 200+ page hardcover art book
# World of Warcraft Behind-the-Scenes DVD
# Exclusive in-game pet
# Official soundtrack
# Cloth map charting the continents of Kalimdor, Azeroth, Khaz Modan, and Lordaeron
# Signed Collector's Edition game manual
# 10-Day Free Guest Pass - invite one of your friends to join the epic quest

The list is amazing all the extra stuff you get.A 200 page hard cover book, and the sound track easily are worth the extra $30.But they go on with 2 versions of the game in both CD's and DVDs.Plus, the ability to give a friend a trial version and the DVD of behind the scenes. If they are still available, I recommend buying this version over the regular if you really love the Warcraft series. It may be a risk to wait and see when the actual release date is, but they are nearing Open Beta, and my only guess is before Christmas.

WarCraft III Expansion: The Frozen Throne Review

WarCraft III Expansion: The Frozen Throne
Average Reviews:

This isn't merely an expansion.- This is practically a whole new game. The software team at Blizzard has outdone themselves once again, bringing us yet another great Role-play stategy masterpiece.Frozen Throne gives us more Warcraft 3, chock full of great new units, diverse new heroes, and 26 new levels in the campaign/story of Azeroth.Frozen Throne is full of new items, creeps, and multiplayer options and levels.I really can't think of anything worth complaining about concerning this release.I myself found Warcraft 3 to be a little difficult; even after playing for months and honing my skills.Fortuneatly, if you have a hard time with Frozen Throne and get tired of punching the monitor in aggravation, you can now adjust the difficulty of your opponent.Three settings: Easy, Normal, and Insane. There is also a nifty Handicap option in the setup screen that can make computer controlled players a bit weaker. So aside from the cool new units and heroes, this game brings more balance to the Warcraft experience.Blizzard has done a great job adjusting and modifying units, hit points, and build times from the previous game. For instance:Some buildings now build faster, certain units cost less food points, and the total food cap is now raised. - Adversely, some buildings now take longer to upgrade, heroes gain experience slower after a time, and particular items are now more expensive etc..The list goes on.Though I am glad to report that just about all of the changes are good. The game is better balanced and a bit more fun now.The new units and maps (even has weather effects now -/snow/ rain) breathe new life into the Warcraft world. This is definitely a better offering than the original Warcraft 3.-Hardcore RTS/RPS gamers and newcomers alike would be foolish to pass up a seat on The Frozen Throne.

Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness Review

Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness
Average Reviews:

Real-time strategy game set in a fantasy universe. Set on a world called Argoth the game is based on a conflict between two forces of allied races, one side is led by humans and the other by orcs. Both magical and technologically-based weapons are incorporated. You can control either side. You play against the computer through a series of single-player missions or participate in multi-player games with up to seven other people (on-line, via modem, serial link or LAN). The gameplay involves resource management and large battles. The game has a lot of depth and numerous unit and building types feature. The game employs an easy-to-use interface and command menu. The game is played on an isometrically-viewed landscape that is rendered in detail, as are the various units which are 3D. Good cutscenes intersperse the single-player game.

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction Expansion Set Review

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction Expansion Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's simply amazing how character development can go in so many directions with this game. Seven character classes are now offered, and focusing on certain options within any of the 3 different "skill trees" of each class can itself forever change the way in which you relate to the game. Characters can become so specialized that names have been attributed to them (lexicons can be found on the Net); for example, if you choose to play a character from the new Druid class, he can be differentiated into a Shifter, Summoner, Elementist, Botanist, Windbreaker, Bowling Druid, etc. [lingo used by D2:LoD addicts, these aren't terms that the game itself uses]. It could be said that choosing from these different paths renews the playability of the game, as you are forced to figure out new strategies to survive, especially in the Nightmare and Hell difficulty settings.
I've been playing this expansion since its release, and can hardly believe how much I yet have to learn. The Druid class is a clever addition to original 5, and quite different from the others; the new Assassin class I cannot in good faith critique, as I have only developed one character from that class. Act 5 has a much different flavor, and disposing of Baal can be a highly frustrating task, if you don't have a plan [Hint: get his back against the wall on the runway, slow him down, and hit him without a pause]. The addition of charms and class-specific items vastly improves your chances for survival, and the new set items are geared towards the more advanced players. However, other improvements put forth in the expansion balance it out in favor of the enemy (e.g., you can no longer dominate simply by having a Level 25 Fire Wall).
Lately I've discovered several websites devoted to the game, and features of the game that previously made little sense now are revealed as worthwhile to me. If you are getting the impression that this game can create a black hole in your weekly schedule, then I think I have gotten my point across. For example, tonite I am supposed to be reading an article titled "Parenteral Nutrition in Pregnancy," but instead I am researching new strategies to keep my Necromancer alive (can you blame me?)
Finally, there is the adrenaline rush motive. When trying to stay alive during some of the more challenging moments, your heart will be racing and you might even break into a sweat. Warnings written in the other reviews (about how addiction to this game can trash your GPA and cause your girlfriend to seek out someone who has never heard of Diablo or its sequels) should be taken very seriously. As a graduate student I came close to smashing the disc on several occasions with the thought of freeing myself...that would doubtless have been a waste of money, as I would have promptly jogged down to the store to pick up another copy.

The martialarts techniques make the assassin a powerful melee fighter while her shadowdisciplines give her powerful and versatile magical attacks. Her trapsare also effective as they let the assassin cause widespread damage throughenemy ranks. The Diablo II expansion's lead designer Tyler Thompson describedher as being a more tactical character than the original Diablo II classes- she cannot cause direct melee or magic damage as readily as the barbarianor sorceress but her attacks are ultimately no less powerful. In additionto her martial arts the assassin also specializes in unconventional bladedweapons like claws and katars. The druid is a tall imposing character clad in furs. His skills ares

StarCraft Review

StarCraft
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is awsome. It's an RTS (Real Time Strategy), meaning that you gather resources, build a base, and raise an ever more powerfull army to destroy your opponent. It's a fast-paced, action-filled, stategic and fun game. The premise is that a group of humans have been stranded in some far corner of the galaxy already inhabited by the mighty Protoss, with the Zerg, classic science fiction hive-bugs, about to attack both. The story is superb, told in three chronological chapters depicting the war from the view of each race. It's full of twists and turns, and the missions scale up in difficulty very nicely.
The best part about Starcraft are the three races.Blizzard has achieved a perfect balnce between them but managed to also keep them utterly different. The Terrans are humans, with tanks, heavy machine guns, nukes and lumbering battlecruisers. The Zerg are a rampaging scourge of giant insects who can be produced quikly and in vast numbers to overwhelm opponents. The Protoss (my personal favorites) are mysterious psychics who use ultra-high tecnology as well as their awsome psionic abilities.Every unit is unique with strengths and weaknesses. For instance, take the first soldier available for each race. The Terran Marine can attack from a distance and stronger than the Zerg's counterpart, the Zergling, but the Zergling is faster and can be produced much faster than the Marine. The Protoss' Zealot is strong, fast, and packs a massive melee punch, but costs twice as much as a Marine and four times that of a Zealot.Every unit has a role throghout the game.Marines constitute a large part of my forces in a game from start to finish. Each race requires individual stratagies that take years (if ever!) to master. This is what makes Starcraft such a tremendous game, and while it will outlast 99% of other games.
The sound is excellent, and the dialogue varies between intreging (sp) and hilarious. The graphics, when they first were released, were the best I had ever seen.I've played this game for yearm and only now are they starting to look outdated, but they're four years old.Besides, if you have time to look at an RTS' graphics, then you're not playing the game! They function and arn't a distraction, which is all that matters in a stratagy game, IMHO.
The coup de gras is the entire interface, which has been plolished to perfection. The curser looks like something space-age, and the moving portraits of units and wire-frame images displaying area damage and hitpoints are just flat-out cool. So is the options menu, with an animated space battle for the single player icon... To select a campaighn you click on a moving avatar of the species in question, which displayes vital statistics of that said species... Little things like this are awsome.I could go on forever.
Multiplayer rules, and has been going strong for years now with no sighns of stopping.Unfortunatly, most of the people are playing maps with limitless resourses and where single-unit attacks actually work, but that's not the game's fault. If you can find a game where people arn't doing either of these, it's a blast. The campaighn editor is also very good, once you learn to use the triggers, which can take time. The cinematics are superb, some seeming as if they belong in a movie like Aliens and not a computer game.If you buy Starcraft, get it's expansion set, Brood War, aswell. It adds alot.
This game's woth it's weight in gold-plated latinum.

Starcraft is the ultimate real-time strategy game.In a world of games that lose their appeal within a year of release, Starcraft keeps bringing players back.Blizzard Entertainment is known for its excellent RTS-type games such as the Warcraft series, but the company's high water mark is Starcraft. The set-up is that a long lost space colony of humans finds itself in mortal conflict with two alien races, the Zerg (nasty reptiles) and Protoss (ancient psionic warriors). The game allows you to play all three races in turn, and revolves around the collection of resources to buy more units, buildings and technological improvements as you try to fulfill mission objectives.
As we've come to expect from Blizzard, the gameplay itself is superb - intuitive interface, interesting units that complement each other in interesting ways, and graphics that are adequate even if they are showing their age.In my opinion, the balance between the three races is as close to perfection of any game I've played. Each race is utterly distinct and requires completely different strategies to play, but none has an obvious advantage over the others. But where the game really goes over the top is in the storyline.Blizzard is NOT known for great plots. For example, the Warcraft III storyline has some unbelievable plot twists that have to be overlooked to keep playing. In contrast, Starcraft has an absorbing plotline that flows seamlessly throughout the single player campaign and actually made me gasp in astonishment a few times, which has never happened since in an RTS.
I assume that any fan of real-time strategy computer games already has this one.If you have any interest at all in RTS, get this game.If you passionately hate RTS, Starcraft is the best bet to change your mind.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Review

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
Average Reviews:

This review is for the contents of the collectors edition package, not the game itself.

The 175 page art book is fantastic. It's hardback and has a nice protective sleeve covering it. The sleeve depicts Deathwing as seen on the Cataclysm website. The concepts and literature inside are great to read/view and it's really cool to see the artistic visuals of all the new NPCs, clothing items, zones and even stills from the cinematic trailer. Many pieces of art depict several different stages of concept certain characters passed through over the period the expansion was developed. Some pieces give a visual representation of events that have transpired and affected the current storyline (there is a piece showcasing the Garrosh/Cairne duel which ultimately ended in.. well i won't spoil that one for you ;) ) The artwork is just really cool. Blizzard certainly has some very talented artists working for them. Various letters written by characters in game are peppered throughout the pages which give insight to the events which have happened and served to shape the new world since the shattering. While not essential for casual fans, they are still a great read for those who love the lore behind World of Warcraft and the book is a wonderful addition of graphic art to any person's collection.

The soundtrack features 17 absolutely phenomenal orchestral tracks from in game. I'm a huge fan of the music of World of Warcraft and the new tracks are very beautifully done and really invoke a real sense of "epicness". The title track is the best its been since the vanilla days (it even incorporates the original Legends of Azeroth theme), and the addition of revamped tracks from old world zones like Elywnn forest and Durotar are a nice, nostalgic touch. I enjoyed the score from Wrath of the Lich King but i think i enjoy this one much more.

Also included:

- In game Lil' Deathy companion pet. He has a welp model, but looks like a midgit-fied Deathwing. every character you'll ever start again will receive him along with a feat of strength. Standard and digital versions of Cataclysm will not receive this pet.

- Mouse pad depicting Deathwing looking upon the ravaged continents of Azeroth. I use an optical mouse so i really have no use for a mouse pad, but it may very well serve as a nice showpiece for any player looking to add a little flavor to their desktop.

- Wrathgate starter deck with a Landro's Gift loot card. Not really useful to me since i don't play the trading card game, but the loot card can provide a very lucrative reward if you're lucky. For instance, one of the possible obtainable items when you receive your gift box is a swift spectral tiger, which bar none is the rarest mount in game and very expensive if purchased from anywhere else. I wasn't lucky, and only got Papa Hummel's pet biscuits.

- Behind the scenes DVD featuring insight into the development of Cataclysm, which is about an hour long. I haven't watched it yet, but i would say it's a fair guess that the DVD is top notch. No hardcore fan of the game would pass up the chance to see how the creative process at Blizzard works, since we rarely if ever have a chance to outside of blue posts.

** After writing this review i was able to watch the DVD in it's entirety. Let me tell you, i didn't expect much going in but by the end my expectations were well exceeded. There is a lot of information packed into this disc and Blizzard went into great detail about all of the changes that were made and explained a lot of the secrets behind their programming magic. There are thorough explanations behind why old world flying was never included in the last 2 expansions, the reasoning and logic behind many of the zone changes, and the developer's went into great detail on the process of creating new zones for this expansion, the challenges they faced in creating content that would rival or exceed what we saw With wrath and their desires to create an experience that was rewarding not just for new fans but for old veterans of the game as well. Also discussed on the disc was the process behind creating the cinematic movie for the expansion ( a project that proved to be far more challenging than i ever thought it was), Warcraft History and a plethora of interviews by developers and artists associated with the World of Warcraft.

- And the expansion itself, which comes on 1 DVD disc. The beauty of this expansion is that the bulk of the material was already patched in before release, so all players really needed to do was provide their activation codes and wait until the servers went live. since all the content can be digitally downloaded once your account has been upgraded, the DVD is more or less a means to reinstall the game without an internet connection.

The package is very sturdy and well put together. All the items that come with it rest in little cutouts on a tray which are lined with felt to prevent scraping or scuffing of your items, and everything fits in smoothly without sliding/bouncing around inside. the tray slides into the outer sleeve kind of like a really big DVD set. You can stand the box vertically and it will remain still, or you can put it on a shelf like a book. Either way is up to you. I would personally rather display it out in the open since it looks so cool, but that's me.

A worthy purchase at 80 dollars, and a great addition for any fan of the game out there.

WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos Review

WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"This Battle.net Beta includes all four of the game's races as well as a significant number of the full product's items, creeps, and neutral buildings. However, the beta is playable only through Battle.net. You can play any of the four races including Humans, Orcs, Undead, and Night Elves against other players on battle.net. Excluded from this Battle.net Beta are the following full-game features: Single-player campaign, multiplayer LAN games, all cinematic sequences, computer opponents, the editor, saving and loading, and several Battle.net features."(Reign of Chaos Battle.net Beta Program)
After having experienced the game myself, Warcraft III puts all other real time strategy games to shame. Commenting on the graphics, everything looks outstanding from units to buildings as well as the scenario. Blizzard really does a nice job making the texture and colors pleasant to look at even when zoomed in. In the previous Warcraft series, the main plot is basically battles between Orc and Human. In Warcraft III, Blizzard adds two more races (Undead and Night Elf) to increase more strategies. Although these two races are new, many people have already grown to love them. I really enjoy using the Undead.
Like Warcraft 2 and StarCraft, the battle system is pretty much the same. Unlike other strategy games such as Red Alert and Age of Empires, learning how to play a new race in Warcraft is like learning how to play a different game. They don't just change the colors of different races; they change everything from units, structures and the style you should play. Warcraft 3 uses the two resources gold and wood and various kinds of units and structures. For those of you Diablo fans, Blizzard bends the meaning of strategy having to include the option of RPG. Every race has heroes to choose from. Each hero is capable of gaining experience, leveling up, learning new skills as well as keeping an inventory for items such as scroll of town portal, health potions and mana potions. It really adds a nice touch of Diablo to it.
The Undead, one of the two new races, really takes skills to play. In order to win the game, you need to master the resources as well as understanding the abilities of every unit. The first time when I played, I build a lot of tough-mean-looking units and invaded my opponent. Clearly I thought I was going to win for my force really out numbered his. My opponent was smart enough to use the abilities of his units by casting some destructive spells and frying my guys. Take the Undead unit Necromancer for example; it can learn skills such as Corpse Explosion and Summon Skeletons, which can be very deadly and useful.
In summary, I really enjoyed playing Warcraft 3. This is not just an ordinary typical strategy game where you will be through after playing once. Learning how to play Warcraft 3 is really like playing four different games. I'm not going into any more details on every race. Let's just hope Blizzard is able to release the damn game soon.

I was approached a few weeks ago by a friend of my cousin who worked for blizzard. He said he knew I loved the original Diablo (I still play it) and wanted to know if I wanted to beta-test it.I said sure.
Playingit for the first time, I found it performed very well on my P-200, 32MBRAM.It begins with an amazing cinematic sequence that fills many of theplot gaps for those unfamiliar with Diablo I.The actual gameplay is thesame system of mouse commands, the interface very similar, but lessobtrusive (eg. when talking to somebody, the text is not screen-sized, butspecific to the part of the screen in which that character is located). The level upgrade system is more logical, less mathematical. The weaponsactually appear diffirent when you hold them - a short sword is notidentical to a dagger when weilded by the character.I haven't had achance to play all the characters (the game is VERY long), but they seemvery distinct, with varying, but well balanced strangths and weaknesses. As before, however, the general tradeoff is speed and magic for brutestrength.
I've come across 100's of distinct weapons, armor, and magicitems in the first level only, so I guess there may be 1000 or even more! The soundtrack is eerie and differs in each level. The sounds of drippingwater and moaning add true realism to this game when played late atnight!
The graphics are far from state of the art, but very decent (Iassume this was either 1) to keep the size of the game down or 2) becauseit's been in production for so long), and I found myself grateful for my3Dfx card, which greatly smooths out the gameplay (I don't know if it isneccessary on a faster machine, but it is supported nevertheless).
This game is the crowning jewel of my collection. From the depth of thestoryline which is, literally years in the making, to the subtle wit andplot twists that are so obviously showing of hard work and dedication.Ithink this game will be Blizzard's best ever.Buy it now!
