Psychonauts Review

Psychonauts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everytime Tim Schafer creates a game, I know it will be a blast.Having been on a roll starting with The Day of the Tentacle up through The Grim Fandango, each game has been delightfully intelligent, creative and an overall wonderful experience.Psychonauts is no different. In fact, it is one of the best games I have played not only this year but in a long time.

The setup is that there is a camp for psychic children who feel different in the outside world. At the camp, the counselors teach children how to harness their power to become Psychonauts, psychics who actually enter people's minds and sort out their problems.Because of this setup, each and every world is completely different from the others.Connected to a hub world of the camp, each real "level" is a person's mind. And each mind reflects the person's personality, fears, phobias etc.For instance, the beginning level is that of your drill instructor. His level is a warzone complete with mines, air plane drops, explosions, barbed wire etc.

Tim Schafer's touch is also evident in the characters who are actually characters. They all have a personality and are very emotive.I haven't laughed at a video game so hard since Conker's Bad Fur Day.This game is hillarious. From the kid who practices looking through a peep hole in the day to get practice for when it's filled with girls to trashing a town Godzilla style, the game has it in spades. However, there are some surprisingly disturbing moments in the game that are also darkly humorous.Because you have psychic powers, you also can do some pretty cool stuff from pyrokinesis, telekinesis, levitation, invisibility, etc. These moves help you progress through the levels and pick up hidden items throughout the game.

Graphically, the game is awesome on the Xbox. The levels are done in vivid colors and with a wonderful cartoon style. The campground seems alive as there are creatures walking your path. From squirrels, crows, pigeons, lizards, bears, etc, the world seems populated and just feels real. You can tell a lot of time and effort was put in to make this game come alive and it works. The game is presented in 480p, for those interested.

Aurally, the characters are voiced to perfection. Some great voice actors have been employed and it really helps create characters that are lovable. The only audio glitch I've noticed is that sometimes my speakers will "click" as voices come in or as the sound changes sometimes. The game is also presented in 5.1 surround in game.

Since the game is a platformer, all of the standards apply. In the real world and in each person's mind, there are a ton of things to collect. In the real world, there are arrowheads that can be pulled from the ground that represent cash. There is a scavenger hunt also going on that will earn you rank (which gives you new powers) and there are cards that can be formed as more rank.In each person's mind, there are also different things to collect such as emotional baggage, mental cobwebs, figments of the imagination and safes which you much punch open to reveal some of the person's past. Some of these slide shows are funny and some are actually kind of sad as you see how these people came to be who they are.I list these items to collect just as a note that the game definitely exhibits all of the charms of a platformer. But there actually is a reason to collecting everything and they fit together in this humorous world.

The game moves quickly and besides one or two intstances of panning that had the game do a wave type pattern, it is perfect. My recommendation if you play the game is to take your time talking to everyone. It helps flesh out the story and if you listen and keep making rounds after each world you will see minor breakups, makeups, humorous instances involving squirrels who tell one kid to kill everyone, and plain funny dialogue.Take your time with this one and you will definitely be rewarded.

This game is great, it's just what I was looking for.It helped remind me why I play video games. When a person can create such wonderful worlds and allow you to play in them, you realize why you play games. It is so creative.Where else can you be chased by a giant fish, rage across town as a Godzilla-like creature, be in a disco world where you must race, pin-ball style, wage war against a Napolean complex and set fire to squirrels? If you want a creative and fun video game that will take approximately 10-15 hours of your time, then this is definitely a must buy.Sure some say the game is too easy and relies on platforming cliches but honestly when you are having this much fun, does it really matter? Why quibble over small faults when you will genuinely have a complete and utter blast playing the game?I absolutely cannot recommend this game enough. And unfortunately, it's one of those games that will end up like Ico or Beyond Good and Evil where no one hears of it and no one plays it.Don't let that happen.Play this game because its games like this that the industry needs to keep creating.

A must buy.Creative and excellent.

Rollercoaster Tycoon Deluxe (Jewel Case) Review

Rollercoaster Tycoon Deluxe
Average Reviews:

Well...I had this version of Roller Coaster Tycoon for my old Windows and when I got my new puter with Windows XP a couple of years ago...much to my chagrin, my Roller Coaster Tycoon did not transfer.
I had gotten this for my son to play, and he is now grown and gone.We tried other versions of Roller Coaster Tycoon...but really none were as fun as the original one.
Once he left...I had empty nest syndrome pretty badly.I looked in the stores for the original version of RCT to see if they had made it compatible with Windows XP and could not find it.But I was told it might be available online...and I was delighted when I found it on Amazon.
I ordered it and have enjoyed it immensely.I love Evergreen Gardens and I play it through and accumulate alot of money on it, then flatten it and make a Serenity Garden where I can make banners with Scriptures and everything.I make just a few rides that I really enjoy watching the workings of and then open my Serenity Park for a low fare and watch the little kids come and play in my low key Amusement Park.
I set all the rides on maintain every 10 minutes and I have plenty of maintenance men, so even the coasters rarely crash.I am a very non violent person and I don't like that feature in the scenario, so I pretty much edit it out in the way I run my parks.
It is fun for this older gal to see the kiddies play and it is a drift of imagination that seems pretty harmless to me.I just try to limit my time, so I am only truly using it for recreation and relaxation.

Arcanum: of Steamworks & Magick Obscura Review

Arcanum: of Steamworks & Magick Obscura
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Arcanum is a game that appeals to a certain audience. If you like figuring out alternate solutions to problems, you may enjoy this game.Fans of the Fallout games will find a similarly well-thought-out setting and sense of humor.Fans of complex RPGs will be delighted by the depth and length of the game.
If you thought Diablo was a great RPG, well, don't bother with Arcanum. The only thing they have in common is that you have a character that grows over time.Diablo was a linear hack-and-slash adventure with clearly defined characters and simple mechanics.Arcanum has a non-linear path and complex character options.Furthermore, if you try to bash through every situation, you will have your head handed to you, especially at the beginning of the game.
Specific likes:The setting, that of a fantasy realm going through an industrial revolution (with some Steampunk-like technology thrown in), is fantastic. The character creation options are varied and give you a great deal of control. The plot is long and involved. Some of the voice acting is quite good, and the background music is very appropriate, if a little monotonous at times. The system for using technology is a lot of fun.Characters can literally take bits and pieces of things and assemble them into everything from hand grenades to healing salves.
Specific dislikes:The combat system has a few odd points.Grenades and such somehow never harm you or your party, so you can throw them with impunity at folks standing right next to you.Critical hits and misses are ludicrously common, with sometimes drastic results, such as self-inflicted damage, dropped or damaged weapons, scarring or even crippled limbs. It reminds me of the old D&D Wandering Damage table some pundit proposed, with entries like, "Cut yourself shaving, consult limb loss table."
Graphics are pretty bland. You can't really tell your party members from people on the street -- although the clothes they wear do make a difference in appearance, at least. The graphics seem to be at about the same level as X-COM: UFO Defense in terms of utility, although they are far more detailed in Arcanum than in that game.
The interface for interacting with party members can be pretty frustrating. You can tell them what to do and what to use, but they have minds of their own, and sometimes they aren't so bright. They will quite willingly run between a gun and a target, and they pick up anything that might be lying around, including stones, old shoes, and bits of fluff.Sometimes, this is useful, but you'll find yourself scanning their inventories on a regular basis.
Overall, if you are in the target audience mentioned above, you can expect a four or even five star rating for this game.If you are not, then three would probably be more acurate for the average gamer, and those addicted to different genres that require a fast mouse and a short attention span will probably rate it as a two or less.

Product Description:
Arcanum is the first game to come from the development house Troika Games, LLC, started by former Fallout team members Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky, and Jason Anderson. This team takes the depth of gameplay and world-building in role-playing games to entirely new levels of realism and excitement.Arcanum creates a compelling new world where magic and technology coexist in an uneasy balance. As Arcanum opens, the mechanical age has only recently arrived in this ancient land where Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and other races have learned to survive in the new sprawling industrialized cities. But this radical shift from magic to technology has created a potentially explosive situation. As the townspeople and other thinkers begin mass production of light bulbs, batteries, eyeglasses and guns, the Mages grow leery. This tightly wound setting is the starting point from which the character must set out on his quest.Classless, point-based attribute system allows for limitless creativity in guiding your character's development.Complex stat system underlies every event taking place within Arcanum

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution Review

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
Average Reviews:

Virtua Fighter 4 evolution has done the near impossible, make one of the best fighting games of all time even better. There is still all the depth and enjoyment of the original, while adding two more characters and the next level of Kumite mode, Quest mode! This mode is a challenging ongoing game where you make your name in every arcade in Tokyo, eventually getting to the center Arena, to become the best Virtua Fight in Japan.Yes, it is a bit tacky, but that is not what is important.Customizable characters get even better as a new array of items is found. You can also get new fighting modes in the central arena, like balance and a mode where you take extra damage when you hit the floor. The fighting moves have always been, and still are, incredibly complex and deep. This is one of the only games I have seen that includes evasion, counterattacks, throw evades, and rolls that allow you to avoid ground attacks. It takes a while to master, but once you get it, it is a very deep and ingenious control system. The reviewer that gave two stars seems to be what most people are that dont like VF4: impatient. He claims that it is too easy in quest mode, but by the time you progress throughout Tokyo, you begin to fight some fighters that are modeled after real people that are among the best VF players in the world. They also lack the patience to go to practice sessions and explore the numerous moves available to them. The only regretable thing to VF4 Evolution is the lack of training your own A.I., which is included in the original. Most VF4 fans can compensate by just whipping out their old copies. If you are new to the series and you want to play the A.I. training version, then I suggest that you buy VF4 and VF4 Evolution, they are only $20 each and are both well worth it.Overall, I would say that VF4 Evolution is a wonderful game that makes other fighting games, with the exception of Soul Caliber 2, look just plain silly.VF4 Evolution, in my opinion could even top the prowess of SC2.Buy this, or at least rent it, you will not regret it.

Cartoon Network Camp Lazlo: Leaky Lake Games Review

Cartoon Network Camp Lazlo: Leaky Lake Games

This happens to be the very first video game for the animated series "Camp Lazlo". In this game, you play as Lazlo and all your favorite characters from the TV show as they prepare for the annual Leaky Lake Games. With a witty concept capturing the very essence of the show, it's rather fun to play.

But above all, this has mini-games out the wazoo ! They involve forest cleaning, teeter-tottering, pinecone sitting, and much more. However, they won't be too easy to earn. In order to get each mini-game, you have to roam around Camp Kidney to do numerous, yet elaborate tasks. If you get a little lost or a bit confused, here's a tip: there's a compass on the lower-right corner of the screen telling you where to go next. Also keep your eyes open for any hidden bonus items that will help you on the way. Those tips might be of service to you when playing this game.

So give this game a whirl and good luck out there battling those undefeated Squirrel Scouts !

Crazy Machines Gold Review

Crazy Machines Gold

This package actually includes 2 games in 1 - Crazy Machines and Crazy Machines 1.5. This bonus is not advertised on the box, but is printed on the disc face. Over 400 challenging puzzles! This is a much better deal than buying them seperately.

Just a few words of warning: This game is 3D accelerated so you will need the proper hardware to run it (I recomend nVidia graphics cards). Also, this version is Windows only (no Mac support like the seperate versions). The game uses very little hard drive space (about 150MB) and runs fine in Windows Vista too.

Buy this game! I highly recomend it!

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones Review

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is a time of peace, suddenly, your country of Renais is attacked by your ally, Grado. They are after the Sacred Stone, but why would they want the very thing that sealed the Demon King away centuries ago?

Welcome back to the realm of Fire Emblem. This installment had nothing to do with the other game (which is a little disappointing) but it still is as good as the first. So, what's new this time around, well first off, there's a difficulty selection available from the start (you had to unlock it in the first). There's beginner, which explains the game and has a tutorial, normal, for those of us who played through the first one and know much of the controls, and difficult, for those who want a challenge.

I got to say that I'm glad that they've added this feature so we don't have to listen to the idiotic tutorial (its good to look at it if your a beginner, but its still annoying).Anyway, the core of this game is essentially the same with some added features.

These added features include that of choosing what you want your character to turn into. For example, in the first game, thieves could only become an assassin. However, in this game you have a choice of an assassin, which is a killing machine (if you have the Killing Edge equipped), or become a Rougue, which is a thief who doesn't need lockpicks to open doors and chests. This adds a lot to the game too.

The other neat feature is the ability to walk on the world map and choose where you want to go.This system, I would compare it to that of FF Tactics Advance because you can run into monsters who are also new to the series.

There's also a Tower of Valni that is like an endurance round. You can leave whenever you want to, and its not required that you go there.

The storyline this time around is predictable but still can be classified as good.I mean I figured from the start what was going to happen, and most of your predictions will come true.

My favorite thing about this game are the main characters, Eirika and Ephraim. They are twins but seem to be complete opposites.Eirika is the peace loving princess who hates war, and Ephraim is the one who runs off trying to find pride in fighting.

So, should you pick up this game?Yes, if you liked the first one, but wanted more or if you haven't played the first. No, if you are tired of the gameplay from the first game because all you are going to get is the recycled form of the original.

PROS
- Good game with good stratergy ideas
- You have the choice to choose if you want the tutorial
- The added walk on the map feature is very useful
- The ability to choose what your unit will become

CONS
- The story is way too predictable
- A lot of this game is recycled from the old game (can be good or bad)

Tales of the Abyss Review

Tales of the Abyss
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While the Tales series isn't nearly as big as other series (namely Final Fantasy), it's still a particularly fun and satisfying game to play. For one, the Tales series has always been able to bring about fantastic gameplay and expansive worlds. While the stories sometimes seem generic they're brilliantly told with fantastic characters.Tales of the Abyss is the latest in the series and needless to say, if you liked Tales of Legendia or even the far superior (and arguably best) Tales of Symphonia, you'll more than likely enjoy this game.

Tales of the Abyss follows Luke Von Fabre.A spoiled rich kid who is busy trying to regain his memories. He was kidnapped seven years ago and can't remember a thing from before then. He's cooped up in a manor, though, and is restricted from leaving.During a training session with his master Van, someone breaks into the manor and attempts to kill him. When Luke steps up to defend his master, the two are suddenly teleported to a different location. It would be pretty basic... if you didn't meet such entertaining characters along the way.Just the same, the dialog is really clever, witty and full of humor.Simply put, you'll have a ball with these characters as they go off and save the world. It overall makes what would've been a generic story very interesting. Not only that, but there are several plot twists. Many of which you won't see coming.

Needless to say it's pretty standard stuff that you'd find yourself getting into some battles. It is, after all, an RPG.Tales of the Abyss has the best battle system in the entire series. It's far more expansive and free.

Battles are pretty much free roam. It's much faster and more intense than turn based combat. At first it's pretty simple stuff. You control one character while the AI controls the other three.Usually in a game when the AI controls the characters it's not a good thing. In the Tales of the Abyss, it's not only a good thing, but easy to tweak with as well. You can change the settings if need be to the point where characters won't waste their tech points so fast, or maybe you want them to focus primarily on attacking all together.Either way, the AI works rather well for this game.

While in battle you can use artes. These are your characters special attacks and techs. You can also string them together all you want as you get further in the game.Characters have their own unique artes, and they have quite a bit of them. This makes battling rather fun.Another great aspect of Tales of the Abyss is that up to four people can play by using a multi-tap.

The game is not an easy game, however. Many boss battles are a pain and even some normal battles can throw you for a loop.Even if you feel you're not being challenged enough, you can change the difficulty level whenever you want.Upon completing the game once even more difficulty levels are unlocked.

Everything about the battle system is pretty simple stuff. There is first the field of fonons.Fonons are the elemental factors at work. When a character cast a spell of a certain fonon a field will appear where the spell struck.Characters can then use these field of fonons for certain artes to perform a much more devastating attack.

There are also Capacity Cores for your characters. You can equip them to certain artes and abilities go to work. For example, you can power up an arte, or make it cost less MP.Some will even allow you to steal or make the effects of certain status artes last longer.

Perhaps the best part about Tales of the Abyss is that it's overall a huge game.Almost everywhere you go is filled with secrets. The main quest alone will keep you busy for hours.Even when it comes to secrets, you'll have to play through the game a second time to unearth them all. This easily makes the game over 100 hours long in and of itself.Tales of the Abyss is filled with as many secrets as any Final Fantasy game.

The voice acting is fantastic. It's lively, full of heart.Even the moments where it's not to the best of it's abilities, the voice acting is good.A lot of the music in Tales of the Abyss is forgettable.Battle themes are really good and catchy, but on the field there's nothing you'll be humming any time soon.

I wish I could tell you the graphics were absolutely fantastic. They're not, unfortunately. Many of the environments are vague. When playing on an HD television the games rougher edges really come out.For a late generation PS2 RPG, Tales of the Abyss is just not pretty to look at.The load times between battles are also very annoying.

At the very least, however, Tales of the Abyss is an exciting RPG filled with secrets, side quests, and tons of likeable characters.Any RPGer would be proud to have it.

The Good

+The characters really bring the story to life. The story itself is basic, but with these characters it become interesting
+The battle system is fast and addictive with lots of interesting aspects
+Great voice acting
+Great dialog and sense of humor

The Bad

-Horrendous Load times
-Some of the graphics could use a touch up
-Battle themes are good, but the rest of the soundtrack is forgettable

Mega Man X Command Mission Review

Mega Man X Command Mission
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked this game up for 40$ and I have to say it is money well spent.Few games these days are good enough to make me feel that my money was put to good use.

While MMXCM is a bit basic as far as exploration and storyline goes, it really shines in the fun department. The graphics fit the game perfectly and the voice acting, while not the greatest, is adequate.(Mega Man fans, this time our blue bomber doesn't sound like a little girl!)Most of the MMX games are hurt by less than stellar voice acting :).

Combat is fun, in that you get weapon energy before each battle. You can choose to use it, or let it build up for stronger attacks. Then, you can even use Final Strikes, which means all 3 of your fighting characters jump in at once to deal out major damage. And each character has a special transform move that makes them twice as tough.Lots of strategy falls into the battles on this game, especially the boss battles.

There is a sort of mini game that really gets you hooked once you pick up the basics.During the game, you find Deployment Robots. You can send these out to stages you have already visited to pick up secret treasures. They go up levels depending on if you placed them properly and used good strategies.Very fun.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, I think this game easily blows away FF8, FFX, and FFX-2.

The combat system is fun and doesn't really get old, especially when you get all the characters and are able to switch them in and out of battle at will. And unlike every other RPG I have ever played, every character is fun and useful to use.In all the Final Fantasy games, there have been a few characters who I tried to keep swept under the rug at all costs. Not so in this game.

I would have given the game an overall score of 5 if exploration had been a little better.Other than that, this is a great game, ESPECIALLY for Mega Man fans.

Everquest: Prophecy of Ro Expansion Pack Review

Most of the game play in this expansion is targeted towards people who have well-geared 70 characters. The only benefit for low level characters is the ability to get 8 extra bank slots and a horse (when you buy the CD version). Also, if your 55+, you can most likely get an Aura via a quest.

One last thing. You probably already realised this, but you probably should NOT BUY A USED COPY.If its used, then who ever used it probably registerd the key with Sony for thier EQ account.Since you can only do this once for each account, buying a used one would be a waist of money since Sony would not alow you to register the key.

Sure Koei keeps releasing the same game with new skins and slight game play variation every few months. If you played one Koei game and liked it, chances are you'll like any Koei game. I've played roughly 6 of the various Warriors games (Samurai, Dynasties, Orochi, etc..) and they are pretty much the same game over and over. You start off with a goal like say, save all the peasants, and then mow down 100's of enemies getting that goal completed. Repeat until the end. That said, I like them. Don't ask me why. They are just mindless button mashers. I love leveling up characters and every one has plenty of characters to level up. Try one out, if you enjoy it, pick up some of the others. Most older ones can be had cheap now, and since there's not much difference between the old and the new, you'll get the idea how the games play and save some $$ doing it.

WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game Review

WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first wrestling game to grace the Playstation, and it offers arcade-fighting action in and out of the ring. Arcade meaning that you press forward, forward punch to perform a move. There are only eight true to life superstars, Bret Hart, the Undertaker, HBK, Razor Ramon, Doink the Clown, Bam Bam Bigelow, Yokozuna, Lex Luger and one hidden superstar, so you may get bored with frequent matches. There are some incredible animations though, but it does get goofy though, with hit combinations, Lex Lugers arm turning into a mace, Bam Bam Bigelow is capable to light his opponents on fire with a diving head butt and other such odd things. Playstation makes great use of the sound qualities and the game has crystal clear sound and voiceovers from Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler doing commentary. The commentary might get repetitive to most people so the game even has the crowd scream things, boo and chant during the match. There is a Road to Wrestlemania mode for single players, which pits you in singles, two on one and three on one-handicap matches. It can get frustrating and tedious to go through those matches. The two player mode only has a huge battle royal mode in which a tag team together tries to defeat 12 wrestlers which come in one after another. While playing the two player mode can get annoying, because once you beat someone you must wait for the game to load as a new superstar runs out.

Whiplash Review

Average Reviews:

First of all, this is a completeley original game. Don't be fooled by it's dark and deranged outer shell, because Whiplash is a fun and inovative platforming/action game. The story goes like this. There is a evil, huge mega corporation that use animals to test new human products. It just so happens that Spanxs the weasel,( who was experimented on with electricity, ) and Redford the rabbit ( who was experimented on with beauty products, ) are chained together and are about to become fused together for the rest of thier lives. Yet they escape the grap of the scientists, and must elude capture at all costs, as well as freeall of the other test animals. The only catch? They're chained together.
It does sound wierd, but it is completley addictive and fun. You use Redford, who is indestructable because of a hairspray test that gave him an impeneterable shield, as a whip and can give him many funny and useful powerups. These include on that inflates, another that lets him electrify gaurds and other enimies, plus at least a dozen more. Or you can simply whip him about. The graphics, while not the best, are very unique and have a griddy/saturday morning cartoon look about them-not bad at all, and they stay at a very constant framerate. The sound is great, with a mix of bizzare sound effects and catchy music. The game is however not as long as it could have been, roughly about ten to fifteen hours depending on how good you are at it, but nevertheless, it is still well worth the forty dollars. I recommend Whiplash to everyone, so don't miss this clever and original game when it comes out the seventh!

Mater's Tall Tales (Disney/Pixar Cars) (Cars Toon) Review

Mater's Tall Tales

My son is obsessed with Cars, and constantly asks to watch the Mater's Tall Tales TV shorts. How much better is it to read them instead! The artwork is lovely (taken right from the digital versions, rather than artist's renderings), the story is simplified but to the point, and Mater is charming as always.Great little collection of stories.
