Serious Sam: Second Encounter Review

Serious Sam: Second Encounter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Serious Sam: The First Encounter" was released less than a year ago, and was an immediate hit with critics and fans.Developed by an unknown team from Croatia, Croteam, "Serious Sam" offered fast-paced, Doomesque action, along with great visuals, all for under $20 bucks.Powered by the "Serious" game engine, "Serious Sam" was able to throw out huge numbers of enemies at the player, onscreen at the same time, without a decrease in system performance.
Sam "Serious" Stone is back in the sequel, "Serious Sam: The Second Encounter," and is better than the original. It looks great, too, using an enhanced version of the "Serious" engine. This time around, environments are varied and colorful; the original Sam featured desert environments that all looked essentially the same.
Gameplay remains the same: proceed through a level and destroy everything that moves.Various power-ups are provided, such as invulnerability and super-speed, which prove to be invaluable in some levels. There's not much thinking here, just blasting monsters into oblivion.
Sam ships with the standard multiplay deathmatch, but also features cooperative multiplayer, which allows you to join in with other players online to battle through each level. It's great fun, and at under $20, a great bargin.

Prey Limited Collector's Edition Review

Prey Limited Collector's Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those of you who followed the first person shooter genre back in 1998 probably vaguely remember a game called Prey that was in development at 3D Realms. The game featured a Native American theme and a unique portal technology that allows enemies to appear out of thin air among other things. Then the game suddenly disappeared for years only to recently resurface. This new game, developed by Human Head Studios, features many of the original ideas from 1998 as well as a state-of-the-art graphics engine and fierce combat. The amount of hype surrounding the game when it was shown at E3 was enormous. Luckily, Prey manages to deliver a solid and compelling first person shooter experience.

Prey opens with the main character of the game, a Native American named Tommy, talking to himself in a bathroom mirror. He wants to take his girlfriend and leave the Indian reservation. She on the other hand doesn't want to leave. While trying to talk her into leaving, his girlfriend and his grandfather are sucked up into an alien ship. Tommy manages to get free and then sets out to rescue his girlfriend. Of course along the way he will end up saving the world.

The plot in the game is actually pretty solid. The game starts out pretty intense and things rapidly escalate and get pretty desperate. It also does a pretty good job of explaining why you of all people are the one who has been chosen to save the world. While the Native American influences are not a major part of the gameplay, it is an interesting and recurring theme in the storyline. The last few levels in the game make up one of the most intense climaxes to any first person shooter in recent memory. The ending also leaves you feeling pretty satisfied, which is a relief considering many high profile games have had disappointing endings recently. The whole game will take most people between 8 to 12 hours.

Along with a compelling plot, the game features amazing visuals. The game is powered by the Doom 3 engine (which also powered Quake 4). So the game features completely real-time lighting and shadowing and interactive GUI surfaces (control panels) like those found in Doom 3 and Quake 4. The engine has also been modified to provide other great looking effects like light bloom. The environments themselves are very detailed and are constantly animating. You really get the feeling that you are in a living spaceship.

In a way, Prey has fallen victim of its own hype. The biggest complaint that most will have with the game is of its use of portals, gravity manipulation and spirit walking. Many were expecting some revolutionary new gameplay mechanics because of these three things. Unfortunately their use doesn't do anything to drastically change the way first person shooters are played. But even though the game comes pretty short of "revolutionary", the portals and gravity manipulation keeps the game pretty fresh throughout, which is more then what other first person shooters offer these days. So while it doesn't reinvent the first person shooter, those gameplay innovations keep it from tasting stale.

The portals serve a couple of purposes. First, they allow you to move from one 3d environment to another seamlessly. Second, portals provide an interesting and fresh way for enemies to enter the environment. For example, sometimes enemies will portal in and be walking on the ceiling.

Perhaps more interesting then the portal system is what the game does with gravity. In the game you will find glowing walkways that allow you to walk up walls and even completely upside down. Even more interesting is that sometimes you will walk around a corner and gravity will completely change directions. There are also times when you will walk through rooms you have already been in but you will be on what was previously the wall or the ceiling. This keeps the battles interesting as you will be shooting down at enemies that look like they are on the ceiling, but they are really on the floor. Also, in some rooms you will have the ability to change gravity by shooting wall panels. The portals and gravity are constantly used in combination for some fun (though not very difficult) puzzles.

Tommy, because of his Native American heritage, also has the ability to leave his body and spirit walk. While in spirit form you can do things that you normally wouldn't be able to do. For example you can walk through force fields and sometimes over large gaps that would have been impossible to jump. Unfortunately, most of these sequences boil down to walking through a force field and hitting a switch on the other side to turn it off. There are a few puzzles in the game when you have to leave your body someplace and then use your spirit to move you somewhere you normally would not be able to go. However, these types of puzzles are few and far between and don't pose much of a challenge. Though you can fight enemies while in spirit form, which can be helpful when you are low on health.

Since you have this spirit walk ability, when you die you are sent to the spirit realm. The spirit realm is basically a small mini-game where you must shoot down red and blue wraiths which recharge your health and spirit energy. After a short amount of time you are sucked back into the living world pretty much exactly where you died. The amount of spirit energy and health you have depends on how well you did in the mini-game. While this is pretty unique and interesting, it has the unfortunate negative effect of making the game pretty easy. You never have to worry about saving since you in essence can't die. Perhaps it would have been better if you could actually fail at the mini-game.

Prey has a pretty good selection of weapons. While your arsenal is actually pretty small, weapons have secondary functions. Some of the weapons are alien versions of familiar weapons while others are pretty unique. One of the weapons must be powered up at stations. How the weapon behaves depends on what type of station you powered it up at.

The enemy designs in the game are pretty good overall. While there are not a ton of different looking enemy types, they all require different strategies to defeat. The AI in the game won't win any awards, but it does a good job of keeping the firefights intense and fun.

The audio in the game is pretty good. The voice acting is of pretty high quality. Unlike other games like Doom 3 or Half-Life 2, the main character in the game speaks a lot. The music score in the game, which is done by Jeremy Soule, is also pretty good. The only somewhat disappointing aspect of the sound design is the weapons themselves. While they don't sound bad by any means, they somewhat lack the punch that you would expect.

In the end, a lot of what you will get out of Prey depends on what you go in expecting. If you expect to find a revolutionary experience you will be disappointed. But if you go in with reasonable expectations, you will find a sold first person shooter with some interesting gameplay innovations that keep the game fresh and makes it stand out compared to other first person shooters.

NBA 2K8 Review

NBA 2K8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NBA 2K7 was arguably the greatest basketball game ever created. The gameplay was simply no match for NBA Live's gameplay, which was downright horrible.Well, just when I though 2K Sports couldn't make a better basketball game than last years, this game came out.One of the big problems with NBA 2K7 was the graphics.A lot of the players didn't really resemble their real life counterpart.Well, that is no longer the case.2K8's graphics are the best I've seen yet, and all the players look so realistic that you actually believe that you're out there with them sweating on the court.

Of course, graphics aren't everything, right?Well, 2K8 has even better gameplay than last years. The shot stick still rocks the house, but there are also a lot of new additions to each game you play. After each game, you can watch the top three plays of the game. But that's not the coolest part. After each game, you can watch a highlight real of any player during the game.If you're playing as Kobe Bryant and you score 50 points against your opponent, then after the game you can watch each amazing play made by Kobe during the game.Sweet, right?

Well, this game also has a very fun and very realistic Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. This should keep you busy for hours, and it isn't even a part of the main game. If you're not good a dunking, there is a dunk school that can teach you how to emulate LeBron on his jams. There is also a really cool 3-Point Shootout.

So, if you're debating whether or not you should go with the hoops king 2K8, or try NBA Live 08, then I would HIGHLY suggest you get 2K8.Even though Live 08 is greatly improved upon, it still has a ways to go to catch up with 2K Sports and their basketball genius.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic Review

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic

This is my first Age of Wonders game, so I can't really compare it to any of the others.I am a long time fan of the Heroes of Might and Magic games and when I saw this in the store I thought it looked very much like the same type of game play, turn based strategy, and I wasn't disappointed. This game is highly addicting and I couldn't be more pleased. There isn't a single bad thing I could say about its game play. There is a three scenario tutorial that gets you into the gameplay right off, many single player options, including a random map generator...and several mutli player options in the bargain.I am a stay at home mom of four young children and turn based strategy with no time limit is pretty much the only way I can get in any game time anymore.Real time is just too hard when you have kids needing your attention. So I am always on the look out for a good game in this genre....and I couldn't be happier with this as my latest find!
To make it short and simple, this is an awesome game worth more then the price it cost to buy.

The Darkness Review

The Darkness
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don't believe the negative hype surrounding this title, it is a spectacular Xbox 360 Next Generation release.
I'm not sure how close the game resembles the comic created by Top Cow, but there are many treats to be experienced both visually and game play wise in The Darkness.
Lets start with some of the positive aspects of this game:

Graphically, this game is absolutely stunning in its graphical beauty.
The dark gritty New York City streets really give off that "real-city" vibe.
Garbage litters the streets and the subway systems, graffiti covers practically every wall (and this graffiti looks like actually graffiti that you would see in real life).
So much detail has been put into the floors, ceilings, walls and in you general surroundings that it is very easy to get deeply immersed in The Darkness.
Following in true Next Gen graphic style, all the wood surfaces in the game look like real wood, metal resembles real metal, concrete looks amazingly realistic. You can see chips in paint, cracks and chips in the concrete - its literally stunning.
The Darkness relies on the use of shadows, and the lighting engine is superb. Light shines off of virtually every surface that would reflect light (including leather!). Every object casts a proper shadow.
Since you are in a city, there are lights everywhere and in order for your Darkness power to work or re-charge you need to be in the shadows.
Basically this mean taking out every light you come into contact with.

Character models look really good. Not as good as Gears of War models, but the characters look believable, most of the time body parts move like they should, clothes look somewhat realistic. Cloth looks amazing. The bodies still look a little clunky, but nothing major.
Face models are wonderfully detailed, you can see wrinkles and imperfections in the characters faces. Sometimes you can see facial expressions however not too often. The faces are probably the most detailed aspect on each character. The eyes in this game look full of life.

The darkness powers look awesome. Your character acquires two demonic serpent heads on either shoulder and they look amazing. Each darkness power is represented very well graphically.
Weapons look realistic, some of the most realistic depictions I have ever seen in a game.
On a side note, you get to learn where the darkness comes from.

The physics are downright cool. Everything seems to move as it should. With one of your darkness powers you can pick up objects and people and fling them around. This looks very cool and makes you feel like a real "force-to-be-reckoned-with".

Some claim that the story line in The Darkness is clich

Medal of Honor Airborne Review

Medal of Honor Airborne
Average Reviews:

I know a lot of gamers are getting tired of the same old and oft-repeated WW2 shooters. But the criticisms I've heard about this game hardly seem justified. The graphics are crisp with good frame rates and smooth play. The AI soldiers seem to react in a far more efficient and realistic manner. Also there are some great new wrinkles.

Two new features I love are the character and weapon development. The idea of incorporating character skill development into a WW2 shooter is fantastic, and while things like weapon upgrades aren't--of course--very realistic, they add an enjoyable new dimension to the gameplay. Also, parachuting into combat is really cool.

So far, I've found the control layout to be smooth and efficient--not always a given with this series.Another plus is the far less linear nature of the missions and combat.Instead of simply moving from point A to B and so on, you're generally just given a set of mission objectives and then left to work them out on your own--with far more opportunity for using terrain and flanking options to achieve success.

All in all, a very satisfying purchase and the first true next-gen WW2 shooter.

Bioshock 2 Review

Bioshock 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved Bioshock; I became immediately immersed in it and spent well over 20 hours completing it during my first playthrough because there was so much to explore in the game. Bioshock 2 is no different. What a cool game Bioshock 2 is so far. Let me say up front that I haven't finished it, and I don't want to be finished. I have played for over 6 hours and I don't get the impression that I'm remotely close to finishing.

After 6 hours, I'm sure that I could have gotten a lot farther in the game than I am a lot faster, but you can prolong the game by exploring areas that may not be the most direct route to your goal. And I spend a lot of time exploring. These little explorations are usually fruitful, because hidden throughout the expansive game are all kinds of weapons, perks and information about where you've once again suddenly found yourself captive: In the underwater city of Rapture. (Edit 3/1/10: Finished the game and the game is as good as the rest of this review suggests. Spent, I'd say, well over 15 hours playing. Extensive searching kept my ammo and "Eve" full at all times.)

The game begins with a flashback cutscene with you as a Big Daddy protecting a Little Sister apparently just before the events of the first game. The cutscene ends badly for you, but you are suddenly "reactivated" about 10 years later within Andrew Ryan's utopian city of Rapture now under the control of a woman named Sofia Lamb, and Lamb is not happy to see you. Did I say utopian city? Well, that may have been the original idea, but the Rapture you ultimately find yourself in is the antithesis of a utopia and in even worse shape than in the first Bioshock. I believe the term is dystopia. Anyway, a familiar name contacts you and helps guide you, a Big Daddy, to your goals.

The good news is that in Bioshock 2, unlike Bioshock 1, your peripheral vision isn't limited like it was by the Big Daddy helmet. Remember that part in Bioshock 1 where you became the Big Daddy and you had to escort the Little Sister? That was one of the tougher parts on the game, no? Well, it looks like we're in for a lot of that in Bioshock 2.

You are given goals and roadblocks o'plenty to prevent you from easily reaching your goals. The few people (called Splicers) left in Rapture that you run into have all gone (are still) stark raving mad, and they'll ruin your day or the Little Sister's day that you're trying to protect if you let them get too close. And don't trip a security alarm; it'll summon armed drones and more Splicers. At the beginning of the first level you get a quick glimpse of something that looks a lot worse than a Splicer, and it becomes clear that the gene altering that was going on in the first one has been taken to the next level in this one.

At least it's easier to hack everything from security cameras to drones to vending machines to safes in Bioshock 2. Not only can you hack from a distance by firing a "hack dart" at a machine like a gun turret, the hacking itself is a new timed system that is based on stopping a needle that moves back in forth over a color coded grid versus the first game's complete the puzzle before time runs out system.

You get all kinds of weapons and occasional opportunities to upgrade your weapons. You're well equipped. And this time not only do you get the Big Daddy's Rivet Gun, but also his oversize drill. The drill is quite effective so far on Splicers and saves on precious ammo; there's a new melee attack added to your defense system and a melee with the drill equipped is almost as effective as the drill itself. You get the a camera again too to take pictures that allow you to conduct research on your foes to increase the damage you can inflict on them and lessen the damage that they inflict on you (don't worry...all you have to do is take the dang picture; the research is done automatically).

In addition to the corpses strewn throughout the game that can be searched for goodies, so is ammo, money and other knick-knacks that will help you progress. Just be sure to search everything if you want to maximize your strength. And speaking of maximizing your strength, one of the first things you get are, just like the first game, Plasmids...or put another way...special abilities. Telekinesis. Pyrokinesis. And a bunch of other Plasmid "kinesises" are unlocked pending your ability to find or buy them. Try picking something heavy up with your telekinesis and throwing it at your enemy...better yet, plant a few Trap Rivets on that thing before you toss it! You're also granted "tonics" to customize your character with. Stuff like armor, various strengths, first aid boosts, and secondary damage on your enemies from your weapons or from just plain old being attacked. Really cool stuff.

Unlike most games, but just like Bioshock 1, the game lets you save at any time, and when you restart play it starts you at the exact place you last saved...not at the last checkpoint. Nice. Very nice. So right before you get to what you think might be a tough part...save! Cuz if you play "poorly", you can just quit and try again.

Like any game with redundant enemies (think RE4's ganados or Uncharted's pirates), the Splicers become quite annoying, but I suppose that's the idea. And yup, you even need to battle with other Big Daddies again. And as tough as they are, wait until you have to battle your newest foe, the Big Sister. My first battle with one of these didn't go so well. Thank goodness for the save anywhere feature! You have GOT to remember to hit that first aid button before your health runs out. You reload automatically, and your Plasmids will recharge automatically (if you've got some Eve), but you don't heal automatically.

Your goals change all the time. Just when you think you've attained a critical goal...it backfires or you're immediately given another that requires backtracking...and then backtracking again. But rest assured it never gets boring. The eerie atmospheres and creepy environments that Bioshock's creators have put together are more than effective. Some areas are really creepy, and there's nothing worse than not being able to find your way out of those which isn't always easy. But that's the fun! Oh yeah, and now that you're in the Big Daddy suit, you're even required to make it through some underwater (or should I say in the water) adventures.

If you like shooters or survival / horror games...Bioshock 2 is for you. The first game is really cheap here at Amazon, and I'd highly recommend that you play it first for chronology's sake. But chronology is completely unnecessary for Bioshock 2. Come to think of it....play Bioshock 2 first then play Bioshock 1 as a prequel!

Because one thing that Bioshock 2 has that Bioshock 1 doesn't is Multiplayer mode. This is really fun. Ya know how Modern Warfare 2 was really a multiplayer game with a bonus single player campaign? Well, Bioshock 2 is a single player game with a bonus multiplayer mode. Think Modern Warfare 2 combined with World at War Zombie mode combined with, well, Bioshock. I tried Multiplayer last night and in my first sitting got almost all of the Trophies (for anyone that cares about that). I really bought Bioshock 2 for the single player mode. But the addition of Multiplayer only adds to the hours of good times to be had with this game. Multiplayer is an interesting story driven mode where the player takes on the role of a citizen of Rapture before the events of the first Bioshock.

So is there anything bad about Bioshock 2 so far. Well, if I had to come up with something it'd be that the graphics seem to have received no upgrade whatsoever. After games like Uncharted, you'd think that 2K would have made some improvements in this department, but I'm not seeing it. The Splicers look as cartoonish as it gets. And my only other complaint would be the familiarity that Bioshock 2 has with the original. But that's the idea, right? You are "reborn" into Rapture.

I've heard some talk about how Bioshock 2 is a carbon copy of the first game. And that talk is just ridiculous. Again, take my review for what it's worth since I'm only just getting into it. But after 6 hours I'd say that there's no question here...add this to your cart. This is a 5-star game...whether you've played the first already or not.

(P.S.--I know that video game to big screen conversions mostly seem to fail, but have you heard that there's a movie adaptation of Bioshock with the 28 Weeks Later Director at the helm?)

Set approximately 10 years after the events of the original BioShock, the halls of Rapture once again echo with sins of the past. Along the Atlantic coastline, a monster - somehow familiar, yet still quite different from anything ever seen - has been snatching little girls and bringing them back to the undersea city. It is a Big Sister, new denizens of Rapture who were once one of the forgotten little girls known as Little Sisters, known to inhabit the city's dank halls. No longer a pawn used to harvest ADAM, the dangerously powerful gene-altering lifeblood of Rapture, from the bodies of others and in turn run the risk of being harvested herself, the Big Sister is now the fastest and most powerful thing in Rapture. You, on the other hand are the very first Big Daddy, in fact the prototype, that for some reason has reactivated. You are similar to the Big Daddies familiar from the original BioShock, but also very different in that you possess free will and no memory of the events of the past ten years. The question is, as you travel through the decrepit and beautiful fallen city beneath the waves, hunting for answers and the solution to your own survival, are you really the hunter, or the hunted?

Gameplay and Multiplayer
In BioShock 2 players will take on the role of the original BigDaddy, not that of game one protagonist, Jack. As a Big Daddy you willhave access to all the strengths and weapons of a standard Big Daddy, including the drill and rivet gun. More importantly you also possess freewill and the ability to use plasmids and gene tonics - genetic modificationsallowed for through ADAM, a stem cell harvested from conquered enemies,or sea slugs outside the Rapture air lock, and powered by the in-gameinjectable serum known as EVE, which can be found, captured or purchased.Plasmids and gene tonics provide a wide range of aggressive and passiveabilities which can be upgraded and arranged for quick use. The abilityto use plasmids and tonics gives you a decided edge over other Big Daddiesand most other denizens of Rapture, excluding the powerful Big Sisters. In addition, due to their role as a Big Daddy, players will experiencea new relation to the Little Sisters. Upon defeating standard Big Daddysyou are given the familiar choice as to whether to harvest or adopt them.Harvesting gains you ADAM immediately, but could alter your path throughthe game, while adopting makes you responsible for Little Sisters, whothen accompany you through Rapture, but also provide aid and warning intimes of danger. Additional gameplay features include: new plasmids, weaponsand the ability to combine these two.

The game also features the anticipated multiplayer modes. Several of these are team-based, allowing up to 10 players. Within these players are provided with a rich prequel experience that expands the origins of the BioShock fiction, and allows you to play as one of several characters pulled from Rapture's history before the events of the first game.

Borderlands has so far proved to be an immensely enjoyable game delivering in many ways where Gearbox promised.I feel it will be equally appealing to fans of shooters and dungeon crawlers alike.

You start the game going through a little story intro and a bit of a bus ride.Shortly after a bit of introduction you'll be asked to select one of the characters and exit the bus to start your adventures. The game doesn't come right out and tell you these are your "classes" but for the interests of the RPG elements of the game that's what they are.Your choices are basically between stealth/special weapons, sniper, support/healing, and tank/melee.There unfortunately isn't a vast amount of customization in their looks available but you can alter a 3 color scheme for their outfit and customize your name almost immediately after stepping off the bus.

From here you do a short and sweet tutorial which throws you right in to the action relatively quickly. The controls are tight and will be very familiar to fans of popular FPS games such as Halo, Resistance, Gears, Unreal, and many others. You have the ability to jump, duck, melee, shoot, toss grenades, and eventually use a class specific special ability such as placing turrets.Aside from the general control of your character menus are easy to navigate for all of your weapons, the map is easy to read, and the HUD is simple and informative.

Following the tutorial you progress the game from doing various quests. These quests can be found on mission boards, from NPCs, and occasionally from random stuff lying around. The quests themselves so far haven't been anything particularly noteworthy in the grand scheme of RPGs.It's still a lot of "kill XYZ" "collect a fistful of whozawhatits" or "go talk to random NPC" but they have streamlined them enough to where the don't feel forced but rather serve as more of a beacon of where you should realistically be taking your character and scoring some nice exp and loot while you're at it.Quest objectives can also be tracked and objectives are clearly marked on your compass.

Outside of questing there are a decent number of monsters to kill.I still don't really have much of an idea as to what dictates when an enemy will respawn but it seems if you wander around enough you will likely run in to something to kill. It's typically not a mindless slaughter either, I would highly recommend trying fighting tactically much like you would in a shooter.Until you out-gear or out-level your opponent you will find that the game can actually be quite challenging at times and reward clever use of your equipment and abilities. The game did a great job of encouraging this too by making your enemies respond to grenades logically, implementing cover well, and of course rewarding you with devastating critical with our beloved' HEAD SHOT!

Sizable amounts of experience can also be earned through completing various challenges which are like in game achievements, some of which are actually tied to achievements/trophies.It's mostly killing various things with various weapons but early on it's a great source of experience and you can track your progress on them.

Starting at level 5 you will start to acquire skill points every level. These are used to boost various abilities of your character via a talent/skill tree. There aren't a lot of choices and you can get quite a few of them with the number of points you wind up with but most of them are fundamentally decent options allowing for some individual diversity in how you build your character without having to over-think it.Aside from that each level your character will get a generic health, defense, and attack boost.

The weapons are pretty cool but I will state that some of the "87 Gazillion" claims were perhaps a bit exaggerated. While it is true that many of the weapons can do quite a bit of unique things, the vast majority of the weapons and gear you will find are going to be slight variations of each other much like any other similar dungeon crawler such as Sacred, Titan Quest, or Diablo.Perhaps later in the game the unique generation of weapons becomes more apparent but I could so far fairly compare this to the way the weapons were in Hellgate: London. As for the size of the actual database and possible combination of weapons, I'm sure their claims are accurate but I can only comment from a practical standpoint of what I've seen.In addition to weapons you also get shields which can do various things such as regen health or do elemental bursts when depleted and grenade modifications which allow your grenades to do all kinds of things such as teleport, stick to things, and bounce.

Looting is probably one of my few mild gripes with this game. You can't simply auto-loot everything in your proximity. What the game has you doing is finding in item, hitting the loot button, and then holding it to pick up other relatively close items. It's not game breaking annoying but the range on it isn't very great and holding the loot button to pick up a weapon will auto-equip it which is something that can be frustrating at times.

The graphics will most likely be a love/hate thing for most players as they are highly stylized.I personally love them and think they're quite well done but there are certainly realism junkies out there that won't care for the cartoon approach at all.I will say that only decent videos of this game should be used to judge the graphics, still screenshots don't do this game any justice at all.Graphics aside the environments are very interesting, the characters are well done albeit a bit generic, enemies are pretty decent (Tremors anybody?), and the animations are high quality.

Multiplayer can be done with 2 player split screen couch co-op and online with up to four players I believe.I haven't gone online yet but the split screen was easy enough.Rather than scaling all of the menus down in split screen they opted to leave them full size and movable so that text wouldn't get smushed together which I thought was a pretty clever move. What this means is both players don't have to squint to read everything thing, simply centralize it in their field of view. Also as you do quests objectives/turn-ins will be shared meaning you don't spend your time waiting for everyone to catch up all the time. In multiplayer you can also duel each other which I haven't tried yet.

Vehicles haven't really been much more than a way to get around for me yet. They can be customized in color and weapon outfit but my brother and I both agreed that they weren't a very good way of killing anything aside from running them over which seemed to always been an automatic kill. For a giant vehicle mounted weapon they seem completely inferior to even the worst weapon you could collect at that relative level. The controls are very similar (identical?) to that of a Warthog in Halo. They'll probably take some getting used to for new players but they're relatively easy once you've figured them out.I personally find them to be a bit floaty and awkward but at the moment I don't see myself needing clutch control out of the vehicles for combat so they are passable.

The story regards something involving finding a long lost vault of alien technology. While I'm sure it's interesting I honestly haven't paid much attention to it aside from parts of the story which I couldn't avoid. This sort of game doesn't really bank on the story for me.

That's basically it.Quest, kill, loot, level, and become the destructive juggernaut that Pandora always needed while searching for the vault.

Pros:
Great implementation of shooter mechanics
Lots of fun loot
Good multiplayer
Straight forward and simple RPG elements
Graphics

Cons:
Graphics
Wonky loot controls
Maybe a little clich

I was a bit apprehensive about getting this game - I knew for fact that I'd get it, since I loved the original so much, but I was worried that the absence of Ken Levine would be too obvious on its story. However, I kinda ignored the voice in the back of my head, and decided to get the game anyway. When the 'more of the same' reviews started coming in, I wasn't disappointed; I loved the original game enough not to mind going through a very similar the game again (I played through Bioshock two or three times; each time finding something new in the game, or the story).

The beginning of Bioshock 2 seemed promising. It's certainly impossible to top the beginning of BS1 (the whole segment up to the exit from the bathysphere is classic), but there was a lot of promise in the presentation of the new antagonist of the game, including the shrines you find here and there, and the occasional communist drivel she spouts. Once you reach near the end, however, you begin to realize that there's really not much of a twist in terms of a plot. The ending(s) is predictable, at best. In the grand scheme of things, Lamb is barely touched upon; enough to make you wonder why she was chosen as an antagonist. Many of the characters you meet in the game seem transient; the last conflict with Sinclair is almost laughable in its brevity and insignificance. In short, the story of Bioshock 2 doesn't hold a candle to that of the first game.

On to gameplay.

The Big Sisters, which seemed to hold so much promise before the game's release are nothing but another enemy - one almost impossible to beat without dying - at least early in the game on Medium and Hard. No real story is presented to explain their existence, short of a silly blurb about them being Little Sisters in a specialized suit.

The underwater levels promised early on are nothing but brief stretches of linear path, and not deserving much mention.

The Big Daddy drill is an interesting weapon in the new arsenal, but it lacks in two serious aspects: a) the drill dash is not available until later on in the game, and this move is often crucial for survival, and b) unlike the wrench, it requires "ammunition", which is often scarce to come by, especially on higher difficulty levels. You are pretty much guaranteed to drain the drill's ammo in any serious fight; therefore, you cannot depend on it in any medium- to large-scale fights.

The variety of new weapons offered in the game is great, but you'll soon learn that you really need the drill, the shotgun, and the rocket launcher. The rivet gun becomes useless almost from the beginning - even headshots hardly scathe the opponents.

The music! One of the best parts of Bioshock is the music, as it sets the mood perfectly. In Bioshock 2, music is barely heard in five or six locations throughout the game. I have heard more old-timey music waiting for the game to load, than I have throughout the entire game; making me wonder why 2K even bothered licensing the songs.

That said, the game does make some good gameplay changes, including the spear gun, which is a fun weapon reminiscent of the one in Half-Life 2. Hacking is better, if not much more realistic, as now you need to hack as you play. While the underwater moments are all-too-brief, there are a few scenes which are beautiful and deserving a lot more attention, than that given. Another excellent addition was the view of the world through the eyes of a Little Sister - if you ever wondered why they refer to the splicers as 'angels', this part in the game makes the reason all-too clear.

All said, I'm far more disappointed by the lack of a solid story in this game, than I am by the elements of gameplay. Living up to the original is not an easy task, and while I didn't expect the same level of innovation from this one, what I did get, I expected - a sequel that desperately cried out for the attention of the author of the original.

Viewlarger. The Story
