We really enjoy fighting games and have played most that have been released. It can be easy to start comparing them to each other and to look for the best of all possible worlds in each game. Tekken 5 really does a great job compared to most of what is on the market today!

First, of course, the fighting. There are 20 characters to start with - plus a number of unlockable. The game does a GREAT job of offering you male and female, young and old, a variety of races. And unlike some other modern games, the females are actually clothed and earn your respect. You fully get the sense that each character has a background, a style, an attitude.

Every character has his or her own moves and combinations. You can master one character, and move on to learning the next character's talents. The more you learn about each character's style, the better you get in any of the combat situations. There are plenty of moves to keep you entertained for weeks, and each executes flawlessly on the screen.

Which brings us to the graphics. I really have to say that this is one of the best looking games I have seen on the PS2. Normally I give the XBox the edge on graphic quality - but there are some arenas that are just stunning. The dark chapel with orange stained glass stands out in my mind. Yes, the backgrounds are in action, the clouds move, birds fly by. You find that in just about any game in modern times. But the quality of the scenes are sometimes just amazing. Sure, there are some arenas that are a bit boring and look repetitive - there's one with dirt, dirt piles and dirt tornados which isn't graet. In general, though, someone spent a lot of time on the worlds you play in.

The graphics for the characters is also quite well done. The braids move with your action, the scraves blow, the attack moves are smooth and flowing. When you slam into the ground or a wall, it creates impacts. Sure, being a PS2, there are some limits. The ground-pieces that fly up are sometimes rather jagged looking. Still, it's about as good as I've seen.

The game has a wide range of difficulty settings, and you can choose characters that are easier or more difficult for you to play with.There's a challenge even in the easiest modes though - don't expect to button-mash your way to victory. It really pays to spend a fair amount of time in training mode, to learn the specific talents of each character.

I do have to say that when you are fighting a tough boss, it gets REALLY annoying to have the boss laugh at you - to have to sit through 5 long seconds of a replay of your failure - to then see and hear "YOU LOSE!" and then another few seconds of start-up before you try again. It's fine the first time or two, but there should be a way to skip it after that. We know we lost, already. There isn't a need for the game to grind your face in the dust for 15 seconds.

That being said, even the main boss is beatable once you learn the counter-moves to his attacks. It's a matter of study, and learning your character's unique talents. There is definitely a way to win with every character. Again, button mashing won't do the trick. It takes strategy.

Also, even though you have a 'circular world' to fight in where you can side-step left or right, it's a very close quarters game. You can't back up to set up a strategy, you can only mince a step or two back. There aren't other levels to jump down to or take advantage of. It's sort of like a sumo match, with a narrow circle to mince around in.

The sound is fast-paced fighting music. There are different styles, to go with the different arenas, but all of it is generic and repetitive. I really like some of the other games that have "real" Chinese and Japanese music, say, for temple battles. But I realize of course that some people ignore the music completely, so it all depends on what interests you. I happen to appreciate having a great music track with my game.

There are a nice variety of game options to keep you playing for months. There are of course the story modes where each character goes through stages and meets their friends and foes. There are one and two player random matches. There are all sorts of unlockables, customizations, and even a bunch of mini-games.

Highly recommended in general!

(More customer reviews)ONE OF THE BEST FIGHTING GAMES. Namco has really improved Tekken 4 from Tekken Tag in almost every way from the graphics to the movement of the characters. I know Tekken 4 is not out yet to most people, but I have been playing a copy for over 4 months. The only problem with my game is that it is from Asia so it is in Japanese with English subtitles, but those of you who order it from the states the game will be in English. I really recommend this game to anyone especially gamers who love the Tekken series. The graphics have been improved a lot. In a couple of stages, for example the beach levels, the water looks wonderful even when walking through it. The amount of characters in this game is short compared to all of the previous games, but they do give you most of the main and best ones. There are a couple new characters and some they changed a little and gave them a new name. Side stepping is really easy this time and smooth. The backgrounds are awesome as well as the characters movements. The training and practice modes are there to help with learning all the special combos and moves. Training of course tells you how to do the move and then you have to do it and practice u just does whatever you want to any character. The Tekken Force mode was a little bit harder then before and the levels where more interesting. Walls have been added which can be good for you or bad depending how you fight. Some of the stages are really small where you can get trapped in a wall while some one is doing a huge combo on you. But if you are the one doing the combo it's really great. Also the begging movie is good. BASICALLY GET THIS GAME even if you are not that much into fighting games because it a blast...

Pro- Great Graphics, with the background being some of the best that I have seen.The jaggies that plagued the Japanese version has all been anti-aliased and the characters look as smooth as hell.
Con-The characters look good, but they also look like plastic G.I.JOES and loses the good anime-ish quality of the arcade characters.

Pro-massive number of characters with unique styles for everyone.Tag juggles have almost infinite possibilities.Very deep system of play with different stamina for characters, reversals, the ability to reverse reversals, parries, universal low parries, and sidesteps that can actually avoid moves offer a lot of fun and practice.Very few characters that a beginner can mash and win against an intermediate player.
Con- Basically, it has the same engine as tekken 3, except for the tag.Some Tekken2 characters lost out in the transition from T2 to TTT.aka Jun and Wang

Pro and con- the music fits with the stages, but nothing memorable or horrible.Namco should have kept the arcade tracks or made it so that you can select them as an option.

Cons-Endings at a bit short and throws the tekken storyline out of wack(even though Namco said TTT had no storyline).

Undoubtedly Tekken fans will love this wireless fighting stick! The build is rock solid with no wireless lag whatsoever! The top and corner edges are molded in a fashion that eliminates sharp corners and the control buttons are each plainly marked above or below respectively. Syncing to the XBOX 360 was a breeze via a recessed button, located on the face of the controller, in the upper left corner. This controller definitely brings the arcade feel home, and yet it is light enough to place on your lap without being uncomfortable. There are non-slip pads in each corner on the bottom for tabletop use. Also on the bottom there is a compartment for two AA batteries, which are included. Tekken has gone from strength to strength without failing to dissapoint each time. The game starts out with theobligatory incredible intro sequence, with some of the facial renderingbeing absolutly mind blowing! Although not Tekkens strong point, Tekken 3has a genuine story line unlike the other 2: Kill everyone be claimedwinner of the Iron Fist Tournament and win some money. The charecters in T3all have valid reasons for entering the tournament mostly being revenge orlove. The graphics in tekken 3 are all super hi-res and move veryconvincingly especially with King's painful multi-parts. The inclusion ofall charecters being able to sidestep and counter moves in one way oranother gives the game an extra dimension in fighting with the side throwsadded, this only adds to the playability of the game. The extra modes areall very entertaining with Tekken Force being the best: a 3-D Streets ofRage. By completing these extra modes under certain conditions extracostumes, charecters and modes are released. The game boasts the fact thatGon is the only licenced charecter to be in the game. Despite the fact thathe's not very good, returning home from the pub and fighting as a 3 footmidgit dino who farts and belches fire will be the funniest thing you wouldhave seen in a long while. The game got incredible reviews every where. Ifyou enjoy the odd scrap then you might like this but if you are a beat'em -up purist you'll be involved in this game literally for months. It's thatgood I'd give it 10/10, 97%, 5*. You will like this game and your a fool ifyou don'y have it. I have nothing but praise for the game. The onlydownside being that despite the 23 odd charecters there is more than a fewsimilarities between their moves. Not anything huge but big enough to beslightly annoying but a magnificent game nonetheless.

(More customer reviews)Tekken had once been a favorite of mine back in the PS1 days. I played Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 religously with a group of friends. I then skipped out on Tekken 4 and 5. With the hype of Street Fighter IV rekindling my interest in fighting games, I decided to go with the LE Version of Tekken 6 to get the fight stick to play it with.

Tekken 6:
+ Easy for the inexperienced button-mashers to play
+ A very large roster of characters with varied fighting styles.
+ New moves and rythms for veterans to discover and experiment with.
+ No time need be wasted unlocking fighters, but plenty of unlockable costumes
+ Fun story mode offer's adventure and a break from the 1-on-1 fighting.
+ Online play is now great since the recent Patch

- Gameplay is slower than it's contemporaries.
- Graphics are really not very impressive.
- Load times seem to be long even after installing.

LE bundle contents:
+ The fight stick is very easy to sync and set up
+ The fight stick has a good solid feel
+ No discernable input lag
+ High quality, hardcover art book is interesting to page through.

Tekken 6 gave no trouble for me to get into after abandoning the Tekken series for the last several iterations. The gameplay felt familiar and I was pulling off some old staple moves and combos with Paul and Heihachi in no time.

Tekken is unique in that it uses more directional taps and button+direction type moves rather the all the directional charges, half circle and quarter circle of SF. Tekken has a unique button layout, assigning one button to each limb. This making combos and moves easier to replicate simply by witnessing them. It also is different in that blocking is achieved by standing or crouching in a neutral direction. additionally, The game plays more like a 2D/3D hybrid rather than using full free 3D movement like Soul Calibur, primarily reserving 3D movements for quick sidesteps and evasion rolls.

Combos are still easy enough for beginners to pull off. Tekken allows liberal juggeling of airborne opponents, which further sets it apart from it's competition. You can easily get 2-3 juggle hits on your opponent nearly every time you strike them or bounce them up in the air. However, the big 10 hit combos and the more technical moves simply won't happen by accident and take practice to not only know how to do them, but when.

Tekken 6 offers a "story campaign" mode, in the vein of the the Tekken force modes first seen in Tekken 3. While this mode does add more content to the game and help to flesh out the story, it doesn't play all that well. I found the Tekken Force mode of Tekken 3 much more enjoyable. Tekken 3 offered co-op right from the start, but not so in this campaign story mode. The hybrid 3d controls are ambitious, but flawed. Taking on multiple attackers is confusing as the targeting system is not very good. You must press R1 to switch targets repeatedly until your character faces the correct one. This can take sever cycles and leave you open to attack. The Campaign Story is a nice side-element to the game, but don't get the idea that it is the focus of Tekken 6 no matter how much Namco hyped it. The real game still lies in the Arcade and Vs. modes.

The online mode is not all that I would have hoped for in regard to performance. I have noticed games to be very laggy, only getting one good game out of maybe 10 at this point. It is frustrating, as I am a decent tekken player, but I lose to people using stale moves because my timing is blown from the latency maing it difficult to use counter and parrying. Essentially, this ruins the complexity of the game online and dumbs it down to just timing simple button-press combos. When I do get a good connection, it's great, but at this point I plan to do most of my vs. matching locally.

The online also allows you to save replays, which I am surprised it took this long for a fighting game to add. occassionally you will fight a laggy opponent, but when you both have good connections the game feels good. Perhaps not quite as good as SF IV's online feels, but on par with Soul Calibur's if not better.

Another area where Tekken 6 is a bit lackluster is in the visuals. The graphics look almost last gen. Some of the broken paralex stages just look bizzare. Comparing this game to Soul Calibur IV, which came out last year from the same publisher, it falls short. Character models almost seem to look polygonal, which I thought was gone from this gen of consoles. It is certainly not awful, but after seeing Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, SC IV and Modern Warfare 2, this game just seems very unpolished.Fortunately, great graphics aren't needed for fun gamepaly. Tekken 6 shines in it's accessability and smooth controls. It's any every-man's fighting game.

Tekken online has more features than Soul Calibur IV, but does not hold up to the performance of SF IV, SC IV or Blaze Blue. I won't be giving up SF IV for this, but Soul calbur IV will be gathering dust for a bit. Overall I would give Tekken an 8/10 due to the robust content, with a tilt of 7/10. It's a step up, but not the big improvement some may have hoped for. However, if you're like me and had been out of Tekken for years, this is much greater than Tekken 3 or 4, but only a minor improvement over Tekken 5.

LIMITED EDITION: 7/10

So, I'll get this gripe off my chest first. It is utterly ridiculous to use bluetooth if no accessories can use it. Sony needs to start allowing licensed products to use Bluetooth. That would have made this the perfect wireless stick. Since it uses a dongle, the stick will not work with PS2 games currently if you have a BC PS3. I was hoping to be able to play R-Type Final and Contra: SS with this, but it is just not possible currently.

That being as it may, The dongle is only a slight annoyance. Hori at least made synchronizing it as simple as pushing the X button. The arcade stick uses 2 AAs which may seem bad at first, but it does allow a longer battery life than if it were to use Lithium Ion like the Dual Shock 3. I have not noticed a hint of controller lag either.

Make no mistake though, this is closer to the Fighting Stick 3 than an HRAP3. The buttons have a decent feel, but can be a bit mushy at times. Replacing with high quality parts would be no simple task. The internal parts are not readily accessable since hori used a tri-wing screw type. Buttons are soldered to the PCB and the stick is not easily replaced due to the battery location and very slim profile case. Modding it can be done, but it will not be easy.This stick emphasizes convenience over durability and performance, and really it does quite well with that. To most gamers this will be far better than the control pad. Personally I am happy with it, even with it's shortcomings.

The Art book really looks nice and is a Hardcover. It has some info on the characters and how they were conceived. A nice compliment to the game for Tekken fans.

The added price of the LE bundle is worth it if you are looking to get an arcade stick and don't plan on entering tournaments or, if like me, you simply wanted the convenience of wireless stick. Otherwise, choose the Hori HRAP3 SA or Madcatz TE sticks if you don't mind the wire. As with all arcade sticks, transitioning from a control pad will be akward at first, but it will allow you much higher potential for fighting games. I have noticed having a fighting stick makes those who you would normally be turned off by the complexity of the DS3 jump right into playing on the more purpose-built, simpler arcade stick. Having 2 fight sticks is a blast for parties or family get togethers.

(More customer reviews)Being an avid Tekken fan, there isn't much that gets me more excited than another sequel in my favorite fighting franchise. I had been looking forward to this one for the past year or so when news was hitting about it's upcoming release and as usual, I put down my pre-order dollars and picked it up first day. After some time playing with it though, somethings bothering me.

For perspective, I fell in love with Tekken with the first in the arcade and it's by far, my favorite fighting franchise. I've played every Tekken to date, and played them to death. Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection is my favorite and I believe the absolute best the series has to offer. So what's wrong with Tekken 6? I'm still not quite sure and that's what's bothering me.

Graphically, it looks very good, in fact the best it's ever looked, but somehow different. The characters have that next gen look about them but may be a little too shiny and bumpy for their own good. I have to admit though, the animations look incredible and very natural and lifelike. The stages are pretty good but nothing spectacular but feature some new break away floors and walls which is pretty cool. The pig sty stage is a real puzzler and is easily my least favorite of the bunch. The soundtrack is also pretty good but I still like Tekken 5 DR's much better. On all fronts though I have a real problem with the the end boss, stage and music. It all just seems so out of place that I have to remind myself I'm playing Tekken. They've tried these type of bosses before and for me, they just don't work. They're much more at home in Soul Calibur than Tekken. After the awesome Jinpachi in Tekken 5, this is a big let down.

Almost every character from the series has returned with a handful of new ones that all play pretty well and aren't totally out of place. I really don't like Lars and Leo though, they look very generic and are the least fun for me to use. I found Zafina to be the most fun of the bunch and the most natural addition with Bob being a close second. All my favorites still play well with some new moves that were fun to discover. The difficulty seems a little ramped up here and I found myself struggling more on medium level than I had in recent memory.

There are a ton of modes including a campaign mode that's like a 3D beat em up, but I personally don't care for it much. It's not fun and doesn't play well, look good and I don't appreciate that I have to go through it to get the characters endings instead of Story Mode which is oddly missing. This is also reminicent of Tekken 3 when they had a similar mode. There's also the standard vs, online, time attack and practice modes.

Like Tekken 5, there's rank promotions and gold to be earned through the campaign and arcade modes that'll enable you to customize your character to your liking. I like this feature in fighting games and I feel it really extends their life.

The oddest thing here is that I should be thrilled to be playing a new Tekken but I'm not. It looks and plays the same but somehow different. I can't quite put my finger on it. The best I can liken it to is when your favorite band comes out with a new album that's just not what you were expecting and your not sure how to feel about it. Tekken 6 is kinda the same and kinda different at the same time but not necessarily in the best way. I'm reminded of Tekken 4, many were put off by it but I didn't have a problem with it and enjoyed it just fine, but like Tekken 6, it was the first on a next generation console. Coincidence? I'm sure the same will be true here as it was with Tekken 4, some will love it while others may feel more like me. Either way, it's still a good game though and I'm gonna play it for a long time and hope it grows on me a little more. I still do recommend it to long time Tekken fans and maybe a rent for newcomers. 11/01/09 Update: After considerable playtime with Tekken 6 I believe the problem is a number of small changes that add up to a big difference for longtime vets. Graphically, I think T6 should look alot better but many of the stages are either very dark or the colors have been cranked up so much that much of the detail is lost. Sound wise, the soundtrack is ok but not among the best in the series. A couple of the tracks just sound weird. The Scenario Campaign, which is the 3D beat-em-up mode, seems to have taken center stage and was probably the focus of way to much time and energy on the part of Namco. After all the effort on their part, it doesn't even play well enough to justify the sacrifice. It's just not fun and it's not why we play Tekken. The biggest omission is the Story Mode that rewardedus with a cool cinematic for each character. Their whole reason for being in the King of Iron Fist Tournament. After too many attempts to beat Azazel, the games disappointing final boss, I was rewarded with end credits. The cinematics are why we play through every character and now there isn't that motivation to do so anymore. The difficulty has been ramped up alot to the point of frustration on anything past "EASY", which isn't all that easy either. The last thing that stands out this year are the loading times. Even though they aren't that long, they've never shown up in previous Tekkens and I don't see the reason for it here. I found that installing the game to the hard drive helps but it takes up alot of memory and we shouldn't have to do it in the first place. We want our fighting games fast and ready to go. So that's it for me. It felt different from the first time I popped it in and played it but now I know why. I've accepted it and I'm gonna keep on playing it but I don't think it'll dethrone Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection as the true King of the Iron Fist. Here's to hoping Namco figures this out and gives us a better Tekken 7.

(More customer reviews)wow, it feels like playing PS2 Tekken 5 on the PSP with same type of graphics and loadtime. Personally the only reason you would want this game is to play Tekken anywhere you go, other than that its almost identical to the PS2 Tekken 5, all the ending are the same all the moves are the same. you do get 2 new characters. To sum it up: I love it, its gotta be the best fighting game on the psp and the best port from ps2 to psp! now if only they can port god of war to the psp with this kind of quality!

LOTS of characters to play, with plenty of depth and technical mastery required to truly master the game.If memorizing complex juggles, 5-10 hit combos, safe/unsafe moves, and the frame data for your moves and the moves of your opponents sounds like 'good times' for you then this game has got you covered.

The Bad:

Everything else.The graphics look waxy and dated compared to other recent releases (SC4 which was released by the same company...), the scenario campaign is a tedious grind--hint: choose Devil Jin as your free unlockable and thank me later--although it's not the torture others make it out to be, and most are reporting the online play is laggy (although I didn't notice it the few times I went online to remind myself that I am a horrible Kazuya player).

Final verdict:

The hardcore purists will enjoy the game for it's depth and steep skill requirement--and be frustrated with the online play, but those of you just looking for a pretty game to sit on the couch and button-mash with your girlfriend, you might want to skip this one.
