LUXOR Pharaoh's Challenge Review

LUXOR Pharaoh's Challenge
Average Reviews:

I can't figure out why that other reviewer gave this game three stars. It's a great game.

I was impressed with how well this translated to the "small screen."The images are crisp and clear, the controls are highly responsive (lag time would kill you on this game), and it is generally an entertaining time-waster.If you're thinking of getting it for a child, understand that there is really no educational value, although I think it encourages cognitive planning. My 7-year-old, who loves the Luxor computer games, is crazy for this one.She is able to play it without the frustration she has experienced with many popular children's DS titles (i.e. the ones with teenage TV personalities on the cover). She figured out the controls without my help, and I didn't hear from her for at least 20 minutes, except, "I'm on level 4!."I enjoy it, as well.

True, it is not terribly different from the computer version.I consider that a positive. We were expecting the Luxor we know and love, which is what we got.If you are interested in a "test drive," go to the Gamehouse website and download the 60-minute trial of one of the computer Luxor games. That should give you enough of a taste to decide if you will like this. The Luxor versions for the computer are the same basic idea as this:shooting marbles at a marble "snake" to make the snake disappear before it gets to the end of the track.

Jewel Quest Expedition Review

Jewel Quest Expedition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jewel Quest is a fun game - the story line that provides that background is pretty lame. 98% of the game revolves around solving "Bejeweled" type puzzles of increasing difficulty. Pretty fun

MY only complaint is that at $30 Jewel Quest is one of the more expensive games for the DS. In fact for an additional $5 you can buy Zelda.... which is more of a true game.Jewel Quest is more along the lines of a game you would buy for a cell phone. It is fun and is great at killing time - but it isn't too in depth.

Pro's

- Fun puzzles can help kill significant time on flights.
- The DS stylus works very well for this game
- Lots of variety in the puzzles
- I like the use of the "Gold Coins" that allow you to complete one unmarked spot.Con's

- A little expensive for the game's content - I think $20 is more appropriate but to each their own.
- The "story" is more annoying than anything.

As a whole - not bad - definitely worth buy if you ever see the game discounted on Amazon or on a discount shelf at a local store!

Carnivores: Cityscape Review

Carnivores: Cityscape
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Imagine yourself all alone in the sewers or on the subway. You are surrounded by darkness and eerie sounds echo about you. You look behind only to find yourself staring into the eyes of an eight-ton predator.
"Carnivores: Cityscape" combines the classic one person shooter game with the excitement of hunting lethal dinosaurs through futuristic environments. Dino Corp, the famous company who has raked in millions from rich connosiuers, has decided to try a new buisness tactic. After some unfortunate accidents on their revoulutionary dinosaur hunting planet, they have decided to take the show on the road. Dino Corp has filled a ship with dinosaurs and plans to take it around the earth colonies as a traveling roadshow.
The game starts with a bang as the spaceship, Dino VII, crash-lands on the outskirts of Crater City, a remote earth colony. The angry dinosaurs, now free from the ship, run amok. You are a special military agent hired by Dino Corp to destroy the dinosaurs. Or if angry dinosaurs are your thing, play as a dinosaur and bite and claw your way to victory.
As an agent, your missions will consist of rescuing people and killing dinosaurs. To accomplish this task, you will be given an arsenal of weaponry ranging from machine guns to laser rifles.
As a dinosaur you must basically destroy the planet, beginning as the small but agressive Coelophysis, and ending as the 46-foot long Giganatosaurus. When your health gets low, finding medical kits isn't the answer. To regain health, you must eat your kills.
"Carnivores: Cityscape" is not only a fun and addictive game, but it is somewhat educational. The game uses unusual dinosaur species. Instead of the standard T-Rex and Velociraptor, players will play as the mighty Suchomimus or the bird-like Oviraptor. These rare creatures will help people learn more about dinosaurs and their ancestors.
"Cityscape" supports multiplayer so players can connect over the internet, or one of many other connections, and play with or against each other. Players can play as cooperative agents, cooperative dinosaurs, deathmatch games, or every man for himself.
I have very few criticisms of this game. After hours of searching, I still haven't figured out how to start a multiplayer game. Don't try consulting the instruction book either. Also, after you have won the game a few times, it gets old, but if you give it some time, it will regain its appeal. I won the game as both human and dinosaur within three days of when I bought it. The game could be improved by making "Carnivores: Cityscape" harder.
Overall, "Carnivores: Cityscape" is a great game. It has great graphics including, water ripples, great landscapes, and realistic dinosaurs. Certain graphics my be distorted if you get too close to something. It also has great audio, including ripples, gunshots and bone-chilling roars.
"Carnivores" is the ultimate dinosuar game. You can save or destroy the world. Choose your path wisely.

I Liked the General playability The freelook wan't to my taste however(Glad It has the option to turn it off). My player tended to get stuck on objects and doorways alot when i tried too peek and shoot around corners(This is a bug and should be fixed). Enemy design is original in it own way and they are fun to figure out each weakness. Weapons concept was great however targeting in the overhead view is sometime difficult. I think the idea of no savegames is acually a good idea however maybe savepoints would have been useful for some players. My final point is the story. Interesting concept and execution however the ending was anticlimactic I think it should have been more rewarding after the endboss was so hard. I loved the plot of it but maybe the detail was were it fell short.

Puzzle Quest Review

Puzzle Quest
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the video game world, the puzzle genre and the RPG genre are like apples and oranges. Both are delicious fruits to be sure, yet they're two completely different genres.Certainly genres that no one thought could ever actually come together.Yet here stands Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords.A hybrid of the puzzle and RPG genre, and the hybrid works!Puzzle fans and RPG fans alike will absolutely love this game.

You'll start the game by choosing a profession.A warrior, druid, knight or something like that. And as you go through the game, you'll discover there are tons of RPG elements in play here. You'll traverse worlds, visit towns, collect items and equipment, and most important of all: you'll battle, and this is where Puzzle Quest truly shines.

The only puzzle game which comes to mind to compare this to is Bejeweled, a game several of you have probably played on your PC or cellphone several times over. You're given an 8x8 grid where you'll swap two tiles in order to get three of the same tile. When you match up three tiles the tiles will disappear and three more tiles will drop in to fill the void.If you've played bejeweled, it's exactly that. However, the color of the tiles represents something. The purple tiles, for example, are experience points. Each time you make three purple tiles disappear you'll gain additional experience points from the battle.Skull tiles deal damage. You've also got tiles that represent your mana, and when you take those tiles out you get more mana.

The way in which battles take place is really quite interesting. You and your opponent share the same board and will take turns to clear out the grid.Your goal, of course, should be to go after the skull pieces to deal damage, but it doesn't hurt to do other things as well.Red, blue, yellow and green tiles represent your mana, and each color pertains to a different spell. However, you'll want to snag these too to recharge your mana and cast spells. You'll want to go after the purple tiles for more experience, and after the Gold tiles to get more gold. This is much more than just trying to kill your enemy before he/she/it kills you. You'll also want to try and get more than three tiles at a time.Stringing together combos and getting rid of more than three tiles nets you an extra turn, and believe me, your computer opponents are no dummies, they will take advantage of this and kill you. It's surprisingly strategic, addictive, and of course, it wouldn't be a puzzle game without multiplayer, and the multiplayer matches against your friends are just as fun and addictive.

Yet the game never puts aside its RPG elements either.Puzzle quest is actually quite a lengthy quest.Complete with sidequests, optional bosses, characters that join your party and everything!Believe it or not, this game probably does span the length of an RPG.That means you could easily spend over fifty hours with this game.To keep its RPG elements in tact, you get experience points from each of the various battles you'll be in.When you level up, you get a chance to distribute points among your attributes. This means giving you a chance to increase things like your strength, HP or your mana skills.

Visually the game is quite impressive. The PSP looks better than the DS version, of course. It just looks more crisp and has more visuals going for it.The manga style artwork is beautiful, and so are the overworld maps and story sequences. This is quite a game to have on your PSP.The only real problem is the load times.Sometimes they can just be daunting, but it's hardly something to worry about. Most PSP games suffer from the effect of load times.By now PSP owners should be used to this.

On paper it doesn't sound like a good idea to mix the RPG and puzzle genre together, but the final product is certainly a fantastic one.RPGers and puzzle gamers alike owe it to themselves to check the game out. This is more than just another purchase of bejeweled, it's a puzzle game with great RPG elements that keep it interesting for hours on end.A fantastic combination.

Pros:

+An interesting hybrid of puzzle and RPG elements that work
+Addictive and strategic gameplay
+The computer is not stupid
+Fun multiplayer experience
+Engaging quest
+Top notch graphics
+Top notch music
+Hours upon hours upon HOURS of gameplay
+The construction of the games elements (tiles representing mana, gold and so forth) is just so well done and put together and it makes for a far more interesting gaming experience

Cons:

-Load times can be annoying
-Sometimes the computer is unrelenting; thankfully, you're not penalized if you lose a battle!

One thing can be said for certain: you haven't played a game like this before. Everything about this game is off-the-wall, but it works. When you load the game for the first time, you will be greeted with giraffes, rainbows, bicycles, and a plethora of other things- all performing some contorted dance- just for you.Welcome to the world of Katamari Damacy, where the gameplay is original and surprisingly addictive.Your goal?- roll your sticky ball around to collect the "objects from earth".As your ball gets bigger, you can pick up bigger things. So you go on a hunt to keep growing your ball. The levels you play in are simply huge- I never felt like I had seen everything in a level- so replay level is quite high.Meanwhile, the background music is a lot of fun, good enough to put you in a good mood if the rest of the game doesn't.And the story- without ruining anything- has to be the product of mixing drugs and alcohol. The controls are quite simple, employing only the analog sticks and a couple shoulder buttons (although I never found much use for the shoulder buttons). When I heard about and found the game, I worried that it would be too simplistic to entertain me- it seems my worries were unfounded; Katamari Damacy is a great game for everyone....and cheap, too!

Thank god I got this as a Christmas present. If I hadn't, I'd be bouncing off the walls all through the school day waiting to play this dumb game.
Why a dumb game? Well, the concept is amazingly simple. You live in a little town (mine was christined Jamaica by my little sister in honor of our upcoming trip to the actual island) in a little house. You can fish, dig for treasure, hunt bugs, and do favors for neighbors (all of which are cute little animals that vary depending on which type of town you ended up with). You have to pay off the mortgage for your house. You can chat it up with residents, visit the local museum, or go shopping. If that gets boring, you can always decorate your house with the seemingly unlimited amounts of rugs, wallpapers, and furniture. Sounds kinda redundant, huh? It's not.
What really makes this game fun? Three things. First of all, the detail in this game is amazing. The towns residents don't just interact with you, they interact with eachother. Several times a day I'll walk into an area to see one character whisper something to another, resulting in either one or both of them getting extremely angry (you can't talk to them while they're like this!) They'll also give eachother presents, and gossip behind eachother's backs. Also, if you share the town with another player (I share with my sister) the town's residents will tend to favor one of you over the other (e.g., a hippo named Lulu loves bragging to me about my sister, showing me her letters, and gushing about favors she did). Secondly, the town is bursting with surprises. You may start a conversation with a character only to have them suddenly give you a gift. New characters may appear, to move in or just visit. My favorite is a disgruntled mole that shows up and spazzes every time I restart the game. Because how would you feel if someone just started your whole world over again? Finally, the real time aspect of the game is great. On Sundays a warthog comes through the town selling turnips. On Saturday nights a guitar playing dog cranks out tunes. On holidays, there are celebrations (for example, I recently got a notice about a New Year's bash at the wishing well). Want to visit a resident? If it's past their bedtime, you're out of luck.
So it sounds like a kid's game? No way. It appeals to little ones (Preschoolers will adore the simple things, like shaking trees, collecting seashells, and moving furniture), grade-schoolers (the museum curator spews interesting facts, and it's always fun to interact with town residents), and teenagers and adults (there's a surprising amount of strategy involved!). What's also great is that you can never "beat" this game. Like The Sims, you basically play until you get sick of it.
I strongly reccomend this game to ANYONE of ANY AGE. Very addictive and endlessly fun, this game is worth your money!

I enjoyed this a lot. It's a combo rhythm and strategy game. You do missions were you fight by listening to the music and pressing different combos of buttons. Cute characters, bright and original art style are apparent throughout. The pata-pata-pata-pon sound will surely get stuck in your head as well. Some might have trouble at times, it does take pretty good memory along with good rhythm skills but to make this easier to play always use headphones. You can't get the full experience without.

The only negative is no, you can't pause the game. But you can put your PSP in sleep mode and it leaves it as it is.So, if you need to stop playing in the middle it's really no problem.

The game is overall fun, original and worth your time. Especially considering all the game has to offer along with the price, it's well worth the money. You can also try it before you buy at the PSN store. The demo is free to try and if you complete it you even get a bonus weapon.Try this game out, you will not regret it.

Defense Grid Review

Defense Grid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This year indie groups seem to be the ones keeping PC gaming alive. After the brilliant World of Goo and the innovative iFLUID and CRAYON PHYSICS, DEFENSE GRID comes along and reminds me how much fun an intelligent PC game can be!

The basic idea is simple enough: you have a power supply with a limited number of cores. Aliens will try to walk (and some fly) in and out with one or more of them. Your job is to place defensive towers to kill them off before they reach the exit. The more aliens you kill the more credits to spend on towers you get. Wave after wave even more aliens will come - so you better choose wisely where to place your towers. It seems simplistic but I assure you it is not.

Different aliens require different types of defenses. From projectile and field to short and long range (and numerous upgrades), there is no short supply of defense towers. And since their deployment and upgrades are not instantaneous, you need to plan ahead (there is a tactical screen on top that foretells what kind of aliens are incoming).

As the game progresses there is more freedom in where to place your towers and, subsequently, reroute the aliens' influx. That is really fun! Make them serpentine around your more powerful towers (and delay them with the Temporal Distortion ones) to wipe them out before they even reach your power cores.

The graphics are very well done, with full zooming capabilities. The camera gets a bit jumpy when fast zooming in, a feature I particularly liked because it reminded me of the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA external shots. The environments are beautifully designed with attention to detail and (contrary to full-priced releases such as SPACE SIEGE) never get boring.

I really liked this game. If you decide to bite the bullet too, be prepared to get really hooked. This is the most ADDICTIVE game ever since Civilization II!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Bookworm Deluxe Review

Bookworm Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am addicted to Bookworm and need to acquire more willpower, fast, to limit my daily gametime. I find myself spending hours playing, late evenings especially, and, (blush), sometimes at work. Trying to accumulate a high score - my personal best - like at the Olympics, is the most addictive part for me!! I used to play Scrabble on the PC and loved it, but Bookworm is by far the better game - I think. I have limited myself to no more than an hour per day, OK sometimes 2 hours - but that is time used to build vocabulary and other skills, rather than watch one of my favorite TV programs. See how easy it is to rationalize? Actually, Bookworm has helped to improve my Scrabble skills also. There's almost an entire dictionary of possibilities stored on the CD.

The concept of Bookworm is simple. One needs to make words by linking adjacent letter tiles. The more complex the word and more difficult the letter, (z, x, q, like Scrabble), the higher the score. Short, or low scoring words, cause fires to start with letters at the top of the PC screen, the library wall. If a word is not formed from the burning tile letters before they reach the bottom, then the game explodes - kaput! The higher your score, the more burning tiles appear. Thus the level of difficulty increases. Also, the longer one plays a particular game, thus using up a variety of tiles, itbecomes more difficult to find either vowels or consonants. Scoring then becomes even more difficult.

There is a leisurely paced Classic Game, and no beat the clock option. I personally prefer this one. It gives one time to really think and look for many-lettered words. Then there's the Action Game, where you have to beat both the clock and the burning tiles. Since one is more inclined to go for short words when the clock is ticking, there are more burning tiles here. It really gets the adrenaline going! There is also a Save Game option which is terrific. Once I begin to score in the high numbers, which can take a while, I get tired, and am able to save the game without losing points, and can come back to it another time. The players' high scores are saved in the Hall of Fame, so it is easy to compete against yourself or another player.

The book worm, Lex, (from lexicon), is a funny and bizarre creature who makes weird noises, supposedly to encourage the player to feed his endless appetite for words. When a particularly good word is formed, he belches! I enjoyed this feature for all of five minutes, and then turned down the sound. However, I think kids would love this vocabulary tapeworm. And Bookworm is perfect for children and adults alike. The game is from Activision. It is fun and educational and I highly recommend it. The CD version is more complex and has many more possibilities than the free download found on the Web. I tried the download before buying the game.

I have 7 Wonders on DS and it was previously my favorite game. This has far surpassed that!It is similar to 7 Wonders in that you have to line up 3 matching "symbols" to clear blocks. The difference with Cradle of Rome is that there seems to be more of a goal rather than just endlessly matching tiles. In this game there are food, resources, and gold tiles which when you clear you collect to help you build your city. There are also many more bonuses and extras that help you to clear rounds and build your city.Overall it is very fun and not too hard nor too easy.I have been playing it non stop since I got it. I think the replay value on this is good as well.If you liked 7 Wonders or similar game I would highly recommend this!

This is what you get when a Tower Defense game is perfected.

Smooth graphics, complimentary sound/music and great gameplay makes this a must own UMD title.

I know this game has been long available on PSN, but it's always been at $20.00.Did not purchase it but have heard from friends it's worth every penny.

Finally decided to bite when the UMD version came out at a bargain price of $10.I would've paid $39.99 (normal price for UMD games) and it'd be worth every penny. From what I've read, I've got 35+ more hours to finish the game, needless to say I will have to play my PSP every chance I get.

One of the most brilliant games on the PSP is back for a second helping, and it does NOT disappoint.Really, this is one of those PSP games that will have your unit shutting off because you didn't notice how long you had been playing and how low your battery is running.Like its predecessor, LR2 is a classic because it is so simple to learn and easy to control, yet you need skill and practice to pick up all the berries, mui muis, and other bonuses.Apparently there aren't as many worlds in this sequel as in the original game, but there are more goals to achieve in each world, including collecting and playing musical notes. There are also new minigames, including some sort of jousting game with ad hoc multiplayer support.Game levels and graphics, plus the variety of game play, are again inspired.LR2 is quite simply a must-have for PSP owners, and one of the most exciting exclusive titles for the system.Just about the most fun $20 can buy you these days.

The Story
Living peacefully on a faraway planet, the LocoRoco and their friends, the Mui Mui, help grow vegetation and look after nature, making the planet a pleasant place to be, playing and singing the days away. When the Moja Troop comes to the planet to take it over, the LocoRoco do not know how to fight against these invaders from outer space. As such, the player assumes the role of "the planet" that is capable of tilting back and forth, and bouncing the LocoRoco in the air, to defeat the Moja Troop and rescue the LocoRoco. The player will also meet many different characters along the way, some of which are unknown to the player. The player must find out how to interact with these characters, and find out what they know, while determining if they are beneficial or should be avoided as foes. Mui Mui can be found in secret areas within the game.

Key Game Features:

25 colorful new stages with hidden challenges to uncover
Enhance LocoRoco by collecting music notes
Play 6 exciting new mini games
Challenge friends Ad-hoc 4 player battle
New LocoRoco Actions: Climb into shells to roll and destroy obstacles, Swing on vines and Jump across grass blades, Sing together and collect notes, Swim underwater
Gameplay
The player controls the planet the LocoRoco inhabit to move the LocoRoco around. The player can also split larger LocoRoco into individual LocoRoco, and then recombine them. Splitting is required into order to fit through tight spaces and also solve many puzzles. (For example, smaller LocoRoco start singing when left idle for a while, which is required at the end of the levels.) There are 5 worlds to clear, each consisting of 8 levels.

The object of each level is to find and eat as many "berries" as possible to increase the size of the LocoRoco, to a maximum of 20. There are also "Pickories" and "Mui Mui" to find. The "Pickories" are used as currency for playing the minigames Mui Mui Crane and Chuppa Chuppa, while the "Mui Mui" unlock more minigames and music for the Loco House. The player must also be careful to avoid enemies, mainly "Burrs" (spiky obstacles) and "Moja", which can cause them to lose LocoRoco or even die if the last LocoRoco is lost.

I picked this up recently because I needed something that didn't require lots of RAM or a strong Graphics card. It's always better to play it on a stronger computer but you can play it on many older rigs.

I was immediately impressed by it. Great graphics, pretty good fight controls (point and click to attack), the gore factor is a big ZERO which I feel is fine in this case, the tasks/quests are pretty straight forward and easy to understand.

The only bad thing to say is that it gets repeatative. "Please go to dungeon level 3 and find my morningstar that was taken by a troll named scruffy and return it to me for a reward." (These are not the real names from the game. They are more professional in the game)
Next Quest, "Please go to Dungeon level 5 and stop a group af red jelly monsters form threatening our town"
his goes on again and again. The monsters just get stronger and bigger.

Your pet companion is a cute idea that was very much like THE BARDS TALE. You have a Yorkshire Terrier or a Cat as a companion. When you go fishing, you can catch fish to feed to the pet which, in turn, turn it into a stronger, bigger pet. Most fish transformations last 2-3 minutes on the dog/cat but I found one that turned my dog into a large spider permanently. (or until you feed it a different fish)

The stronger your character becomes, the better the items become that are available from merchants in town.

It's a great game that is fun for everyone if you don't mind a little similar quests.
