Metal Slug Anthology Review

Metal Slug Anthology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After numerous delays, SNK has finally brought the Metal Slug Anthology to the PS2. This game has already been out for a few months on the Wii and for about a month on the Sony PSP, but the PS2 version is the best version to get of this game.

Think of Metal Slug as Contra on steroids/crack and you'll have a proper understanding of what all of these games are about. For the most part, you run to the right side of the screen laying waste to everything in your past while rescuing hostages and sometimes getting access to vehicles called Metal Slugs to cause even more damage. Most of the game is spent running and shooting, but they also spice things up with some shooter type segments in which you're in a flying vehicle of some sort (and at one point a small submarine type thing).

Basically, you get all 7 proper Metal Slug games on one disc (well, really 6 as Metal Slug X was a re-working of part 2 that fixed most of the extreme slow down problems of Metal Slug 2), all are emulated almost perfectly from the original SNK Neo-Geo system ROM's.The only slight downside is that there is some in game loading when you finish one area of a level and are heading to the next area. The game will pause for about 1 to 3 seconds (though the music will keep going) while the game loads the next area. While some purists will decry this and say that it ruins the game, it only breaks up the breakneck pace just the very slightest and was kind of unavoidable.

The games are slightly letterboxed with black bars on the left & right side of the TV screen to approximate the original arcade screen size.

As for the games themselves, I found them to be arcade perfect ports all the way disregarding the slight load times. Some people are upset that they didn't just put the PS2 ports of 3, 4, and 5 that have already been out for the PS2either in the states or Japan on this collection instead of emulating the original arcade ROM's, but I think that these emulations do a much better job of preserving every single frame of animation as well as the proper arcade feel of the original Neo-Geo titles. There is some slow down at times, but this was present in the original games and can actually help out in hectic parts at times.

The animation is the most important thing of Metal Slug games and since these are great emulations of the original ROM's, nothing is missing in this regard. The sound/music is also duplicate flawlessly. The Metal Slug games have always had great music anyway.

Some people have complained that there is a lag in the controls at times, but I've played through all 7 games and found that the control is dead on.

The first Metal Slug feels a little more sluggish compared to the rest of the games, but that's more due to how they chose to animate your character when you turn from left to right as well as jumping.Never did I die as a result of some lag time in the controls, everything just felt right in that regard.

Probably the best part of this collection is the fact that Metal Slug 6 (which is a fairly recent game) has been included on this game. I would say that next to part 3 (which was ported to the US X-Box but not the US PS2), it's the best game of the series by far.

Extras include unlockable art galleries when you beat each game, you can listen to the music of each game and there's a text interviewwith some of the original game developers about the Metal Slug series.

They could have maybe included some of the combat school extras from the Neo Geo CD versions of 1 & 2, but you really can't complain too much.

Each game takes around 45 to 60 minutes to beat, which might not be seen as much, but these are more of old school games in which the point was a quick burst of pure pick-up-and-play gameplay. But when you combine all 7 of these in one package for only 40 dollars, you can't beat it for pure adrenaline pumping fun.

The PS2 version corrects most of the errors of the PSP and Wii versions as well as minimizing the in game load times.

Highly recommended!

Neverwinter Nights Review

Neverwinter Nights
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've played a lot of computer based role playing games and I think Neverwinter Nights is the best.I've played it for over a year now.

For one thing, the Platinum package offers an incredible amount of content that used to cost $100 in a very affordable package.Second, the game is based on Dungeons and Dragons rules, which have been tested and refined for decades. It takes a while to grasp the richness of the possibilities, but it's worth it.Third, some people complain about the graphics but I think they look great.I never get tired of pausing a battle and zooming the camera around in circles and in for a closeup.Fourth, the interface is so simple it's almost a work of art.You right click on any particular object and a menu of things you can do with it comes up.

Fifth, with NWN comes a toolset that lets you build your own adventures. The ones provided with NWN Platinum are pretty good -- with Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark being far better than the original campaign. So you can download, for free, literally hundreds of additional games that fans have spent hundreds or thousands of hours creating. And many of these are even better than the adventures that come with NWN Platinum.People have also built additional scenery, monsters, environments, and much more.So you learn one set of rules and you're set for dozens of adventures - some short and intense, some huge and sprawling (with up to 60-100 hours of playing time, so they say).I feel like I'm totally set to be entertained for the next 6-12 months, probably more if people keep building great adventures and putting them online.(See nwvault.ign.com for a glimpse of what's out there. And did I mention it's all free?)

Sixth, if you have a fast online connection (which I don't), you can play online with others in "persistent worlds" full of gamers, or in campaigns with your friends -- and a Dungeon Master can even run the show and provide the kind of interactivity and richness that pen & paper experiences used to provide.I can't speak to that whole aspect because I don't have DSL or cable, but many people love playing that way.

I think this is simply an unbeatable package.Diablo I&II were incredibly fun, they had atmosphere and gameplay for days, but in terms of role playing they lacked depth and freedom, and battles were basically a clickfest (click on that one! now click on that one! now click on that one!).Morrowind is unmatched as a sprawling, freeform adventure, but it's so open ended that you often feel lost and somewhat unmotivated after a couple of weeks, or months, of playing.Plus, to improve your lock picking skill, you had to pick hundreds of locks. To improve your jumping skill, you had to jump and jump and jump. That system just doesn't appeal to me.

I wish you good gaming.[PS:advice for new players:play a cleric.Great combination of fighter and spell caster.Lots of fun.]

Sega Genesis Collection Review

Sega Genesis Collection
Average Reviews:

There's a steady list of classic compilation games coming out these days, and the Sega Genesis Collection brings nearly thirty classic Genesis games to the PS2, and they all look, sound, and play like their original, 16-bit counterparts. Many of the games here we haven't seen on previous Sega compilations, like Alex Kidd, Bonanza Bros., Shadow Dancer, Ristar, Decap Attack, Sword of Vermillion, Super Thunder Blade, and Shinobi 3 to go along with faves like Sonic 1 & 2, the Golden Axe trilogy, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Flicky, the Ecco trilogy, and the Phantasy Star games, which thankfully includes the overlooked classic Phantasy Star IV, which along with II and III, is worth the price of admission alone.Vectorman 1 & 2 are here as well, and so is the Genesis version of Virtua Fighter 2, which is the only real weak spot of the compilation as it is just as muddy, slow, and buggy as it was when released on the Genesis years ago. There's a good amount of extras as well, including many interviews with developers, and unlockable games like the arcade version of Altered Beast and Zaxxon.Sadly though, some games which longtime fans may have wanted to see here, like the Streets of Rage trilogy, Revenge of Shinobi, Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force, Landstalker, and Eternal Champions would have been more than welcome, although many of them are available on previous compilations. All in all, the Sega Genesis Collection is a wonderful compilation of some of the best Genesis games ever, and for longtime fans of the classic console, this is a must have.

Namco Museum Virtual Arcade Review

Namco Museum Virtual Arcade
Average Reviews:

This was the first game I popped into my 360 when I got my console, and much to my horror, every time I tried to access Galaga or Pac Man Championship Editions, I got booted back to the regular menu. I feared the worst--that I hadn't actually bought these games with my disc, but somehow, I had been scammed into getting access to them on Xbox Live by purchasing the disc. Even when I did some research online, many reviews made it sound like this was the case. But I...um...dig dug deeper and found this is NOT the case as some reviews have clarified here, but I'm going to clarify even further. I did NOT have any connection to the internet for my 360 when I finally accessed the games, so I know you don't need any kind of Live account to do it. The games, as others have said, are not accessible through the general menu on the game disc itself. You have to hit the round 'X' button in the center of your controller (while the game disc is in the console) and go to your xbox 360's main dashboard then maneuver through the menus to your list of games supposedly on your xobx 360 (this is RIDICULOUS). There you'll find the seemingly inaccessible games to choose from, but of course, those games aren't REALLY on your xbox 360, otherwise they'd still be there when you remove the disc from the console! Dumbest setup EVER.

Namco Museum 50th Anniversary Review

Namco Museum 50th Anniversary
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is definitely a nostalgia trip.

Even if you have the other museum titles it's worthwhile to pick this one up. Galaga 88 is the reason why you need this game. Galaga 88 is worth the price of admission alone. Also packaged are some other great titles (although almost all of them are already in other museum titles). You get:

Pac-Man
Ms. Pac-Man
Pac-Mania
Galaga
Galaga 88
Galaxian
Dig Dug
Pole Position
Pole Position II
Rolling Thunder
Rally X
Bosconian
Dragon Spirit
Sky Kid
Xevious
Mappy

Most of these games are great. A few of them I don't play very much namely Rally X (just never got into this one I guess) Pac-Mania and Mappy. A lot of people don't like Sky Kid, but I love that game.

If you don't have any of the Namco Museum games then you definitely need to pick this up!

There are a few downsides though. The games are great of coarse and they're all restored to their original goodness, but Namco sure didn't do much to celebrate their 50th anniversary. No history, no interviews, none of that. The only *bonus* you get is you can unlock Pac-Mania and Galaga 88 if you can get a high enough score in Pac-Man and Ms Pac Man and if you get a high score in Galaga. The scores really aren't very hard to reach though so you should unlock them within the first couple hours of play. I really wish that Namco would have done something to make this release special but they didn't. But that's okay, i'm over it :)

In closing *ahem*galaga88*ahem* I would like to say *galaga88* that this game is *galaga88* definitely worth *galaga88* the price *cough*galaga88*cough*

Space Quest Collection Review

Space Quest Collection
Average Reviews:

I bought a couple of these re-release sets over the years trying to make them work on newer computers. Vivendi finally took some time here to polish up these games and get them working on modern hardware. I have tested and played through the intro to each of these games and did some basic gameplay.

Vivendi has licensed a program called DosBox to act as middleware between DOS emulation and Windows XP. This means the games finally run properly on new computers. The sound is properly redirected through sound cards under Windows. Even the beeps and bleeps of the PC speaker sound from Space Quest II come through on my Sound Blaster Audigy 2. I had not been able to play the sound for Space Quest III since I sold my old 486 about 8 years ago.

The games also play at the proper speed. No longer does the character move at light-speed regardless of the setting you make in the game. The games all seem to be playable and enjoyable. Included in the set is the VGA remake of Space Quest I, the talking CD-ROM version of Space Quest IV, and the CD-ROM version of Space Quest VI. It might have been nice to see the other versions of those games included, but the quality of what has been included here is first rate. There is also a manual included in PDF format from one of the earlier releases of the anthology.

Thank you Vivendi for resurrecting some of my favorite adventure games from my childhood and for taking the time to make a polished interface to make them work properly!! I hope the rest of the Sierra games will be released soon. You certainly can't beat the price for these at all!

I also bought the King's Quest Compilation and I expect it to be just as great based on my impressions of the Space Quest Compilation.

The Command and Conquer Collection Review

The Command and Conquer Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great and well-rounded collection of games from the Command & Conquer universe.

Tiberian Sun & Firestorm Expansion - Though the graphics are a little dated, the gameplay of Tiberian Sun more than make up for it. Futuristic technology abounds. 4 out of 5.

Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge Expansion - Possibly the most popular C&C game, Red Alert 2 allows you to fight in the modern world (with some futuristic technologies such as hovercraft. The war is between the U.S. and its allies and the Soviet Union, who are invading the States and have powerful mind-control technology at their disposal. 5 out of 5.

Renegade - This is the only game in this collection that falls short of great. Sure, it's cool for a while to run around in the world of Tiberian Sun, but a great first-person shooter this is not. It's repetetive and alternately laughably easy and frustratingly hard. If you're looking for a couple days' worth of entertainment, this might suit you. If you're looking for a great sci-fi FPS, well, keep looking. Westwood should've stuck with strategy games. 3 out of 5.

All in all this is a great package that is well worth your twenty bucks. If you like RTS games at all, stop reading this review and buy The Command & Conquer Collection.

Star Wars: The Best of PC (Empire at War, Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars Battlefront, Republic Commando) Review

Star Wars: The Best of PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For one cheap price, you can now get five Star Wars games that been released previously during the past four years. Most of the five games are still selling for $19.95 at most stores around the country so that make it a pretty good deal. The games in this collection are listed as:
1) Empires at War
2) Knights of the Old Republic
3) Battlefront (first one)
4) Jedi Knights II Outcast
5) Republic Commandos
For some one who never played any of these games before, this is a great deal. If you played one or two of these games, you still got three or four more so it still not such a bad deal. The package also gives you a free 14 day trial for on-line Star Wars Galaxies game.

My rating is based on two elements. For the fun factor, it based on previous reviews I have read on these games since ironically speaking, I was planning to buy some of the games in this package separately before spotting this package on Black Friday. The overall rating is based on the value of the package. I think no one will ever doubt that five great Star Wars games in one package is not a "Five stars" value.

Obviously, if you owned and played all these games already, this package won't be worth a wooden nickel. This package appears to be created for late comers like myself or people who always wanted to play but never had the chance due to time, money or other factors. For folks like us, this package should provides countless hours of entertainment at a relatively cheap price.
