Half-Life Expansion Pack: Opposing Force Review

Half-Life Expansion Pack: Opposing Force
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased Half-Life shortly after it's release in 1998 and built a system just to play this one title...I was not disappointed. More recently, my anticipation had been building over the past several months as I watchedand waited for Opposing Force to be released. I bought it, loaded it,played it and conquered it...all too quickly. Valve presented the gamingworld with some pretty big shoes to fill, and it seems as though Gearboxhas made the add-on to the 1998 Game of the Year less difficult tocomplete. I thrive on the complex puzzles that level designers create(i.e., System Shock II). And, while the alien AI has been enhanced, theoverall game play (when compared to it's parent product) doesn't live up tomy level of anticipation or the hype that normally surrounds a Sierraproduct. Also, I know that it is only 40% the size of the original game, but I paid as much for this as I did Half-Life. I have to admit, though, that the multiplayer aspect and additional maps are right on the money. Some of the best death-matching you can buy is right here (until Q III isreleased). And, overall, the visuals were excellent throughout the BlackMesa compound. I am disappointed, though, that I only caught 1 glimpse ofGordon Freeman. Bottom line: buy it and enjoy: blowing things up, crackingskulls and playing with exotic weapons...or your collection of Half-lifemaps and mods will go unfinished...until 2001 (Half-Life 2! ).

Aliens Versus Predator Gold Review

Aliens Versus Predator Gold
Average Reviews:

until you get into it.When I first started playing, this game was so frustratingly impossible, but when you get used to it, it stops being impossible and starts being a challenge. This game definitely makeswonderful use of all the source materiel, giving us a wonderfulcinematic-feeling experience. Now you can sympathize with what all thosepeople were feeling in the Alien movies.
The Alien is probably thehardest to play as.Granted it moves really fast and can walk on walls, but no ranged weapons, and no medkit, leave you exceptionally vulnerable tothe marines' rapid fire weaponry.
The Marine levels are also extremelydifficult, because as soon as an alien gets under your arc of fire, you'regood as dead.Fortunately, you get a full range of fun weapons.
But theeasiest, if least fun, is the Predator.Exceptionally strong, withauto-aiming vision, sniper weapons, and auto-recharging ammo, this guy'slevels are, at first, a lot easier than the other two.
Each of thecharacters has his own, linear, campaign, but these campaignes have nothingto do with each other. The multiplayer's lots of fun, the sounds areexcellent, the graphics are high-res, and run well, even with all thefeatures on, on a low end system.Plus, it takes less than 300 megs of HDspace and it doesn't require the CD!The music, while not award-winningmateriel, is moody, and the predator music recognizably borrows materielfrom his movie theme, while the Marine and Alien music is similar to theAliens action themes.
The enemies aren't incredibly diverse, but they'retough and they look cool, so that doesn't matter too much. And don't worryabout the difficulty level...The gold edition comes with the strategyguide.Overall, this is a very fun and addictive, if very hard, game toadd to your collection.Recommended.

Unreal 2: The Awakening Special Edition Review

Unreal 2: The Awakening Special Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unreal 2: The Awakening is like any other First Person Shooter game. You are the last hope of the world again, and you must take on the enemy (mostly) alone. Only to be rewarded with similar cut scenes of your transport going from - or coming to your space ship. (Although your First Mate, Aida, is somewhat good looking (...))It's an entertaining story at least. And probably worth the (...) asking price for what it is. Just expect to play it for 6 - 10 hours with little replay.
What sets this game a part from other shooters is the one sniper mission where you have to protect a mechanic from a sniper vantage point. Or the two mini-base building mission, where you protect others by building a force field and gun turrets. Else, you just hunt for the switch or find the Artifact, and even this is fairly straight forward. And the weapons are very imaginative. (Later on in the game...)
To sum it up: AI is great. Graphics are great. Sound is great. The story is good. Characters are good. And the missions are average. Length of the game is short. And the difficulty is adjustable from very easy to insane.

Aliens Versus Predator Review

Aliens Versus Predator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Alien VS Predator is the best "Alien" game released to date (I was actually fond of Alien Trilogy) and has a lot going for it. You can play as a marine, alien or predator. Playing as the Alien is the easiestand is pretty difficult to master as first. You will need to climb onwalls, learn to pounce, and sneak up on your targets. As the Predator, youwill need to use your fast arsenal of weapons, visions and invisibilityfeatures to win. The scariest and most fun character is the marine. Youwill need to collect weapons, health and watch your back at all times. Younever know when an Alien is around the corner. And if you see or hear aface hugger, you better start shooting or run for your life. If one getsyou, you WILL jump from your seat! The only drawbacks is that the save gamefeature is lame (if you download the patch, otherwise, there isn't a savegame feature,) and the game will give you extra levels at the end, ONLY ifyou beat the game at a higher difficulty. Other than that, if you like theAlien movies, get this! I give this title a B+.

Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles Review

Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles
Average Reviews:

Being a MYST fan, I almost didn't get this because of it going on-line as a type of MMORPG originally and I don't like those games.

But when I saw the this with both expansion packs, I couldn't resist (also had heard by then that the on-line was canceled because of little support). And what a value. There are many hours of gameplay here. It is also pretty hard, so have some patience because some of this hard to figure out.

The graphics are as always fantastic (especially the water. It looks awesome and I think they know it because there is water everywhere in this game). The scenery is more interactive than ever and there are alot of things moving here.

The sounds of the game are very good to, especially with some good headphones. I spent some time looking around checking everything out and I wasn't dissapointed.

You can also change your Avatar (this is a 1st or 3rd person game and you will need to use both) from clothes, to face, to sunglasses. And you will collect more items along the way which you can change in to.

Some of the puzzles were wierd, and they reminded alot of playing Riven which is one of the things I didn't really like as you had to go back and forth alot between ages. But there are many puzzles to solve and this is seamless, so you never know when you are playing Ages Beyond MYST or one of the expansion packs. There are also alot of books to read here (and you have to read them all or you will miss vital clues and answers for some of the puzzles), more than any of the other MYST games (maybe even more than the other 3 put together).

I had alot of fun, and if you are a MYST fan, this is an unbeatable deal.

This game is so fun and scary I jumped like 20 times in the marine levels. The game keeps your heart racing because an alien can jump at you out of no were and can appear behind you. And its cool how you only have a little light to help you see in the dark. Some people say the graphics aren't that good but when I played the game if thought they were great. The sounds in the game are really nice they remind you of the movies. The Back round music is really cool to. The Predator levels are really fun with all the different weapons but it's also the hardest because you die so fast. The Alien levels are real fun because you get to go threw the alien cycle of life. All in all if you like the any of the alien or predator movies or AVP the movie then you will love this game.

Aliens Versus Predator Extinction Review

Aliens Versus Predator Extinction
Average Reviews:

This game has an incredible foundation in place to build an even better game on.If it had spent another few months in the tank getting tweaks and having some more depth added to it, it could have been stunning.
The game that this mostly resembles is not Warcraft, but the seminal Command & Conquer series, though with these graphics, AI, unit choices and relative game play, only the earlier incarnations.I would have liked more unit types, higher caps, larger maps, a skirmish mode (campaign only? What's that?!) and maybe a tweak or two on the controls. The push-the-stick-and-circle-to-select-troops was suspect at best, and C&C already has a perfect way to do it: just make a square and capture the units you want to use, no guesswork.Even the original PS version can do that.
All in all, a good idea and not a wholly bad game, but I hope they take some cues from a franchise that does it right and come back to this. They're really on the verge of making a wholly good game here, just not with these flaws.Give us a "Part 2" to this and make these slight changes and you're gold.

Aliens Versus Predator 2 Review

Aliens Versus Predator 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even after beating this game several years ago, this remains as my all time favorite shooter (yes, I like it more than Halo.). The game not only offers a fantastic, twisting story, but also some of the most impressive level design I've ever seen. Choose your side, (marine, alien-aka xenomorph, or predator) and let the fun begin. All three species offer different levels, weapons, and play style, which will ultimatly appeal to everyone. As a marine, the game plays a lot like the alien movies (the second one in paticular), in that you will often feel very scard and creeped out through-out many of the levels, runing from predators, killing aliens, and ultimatly being very frightened, with your heart racing at the end of every level. As the predator, the game loses it's scare factor, in turn making you feel like the master of your domain, with a wide variety of gadgets and weapons to slaughter your enemies (sorry, "prey") with. No longer are you the scared and lonly marine, but instead a stealthy killing machine with the tools to handle any job. The alien missions, though, are very different from the others, in the sense that you begin life as a "face hugger", impregnate a human and become a "chest burster" and finially evolve to your final form, the dreaded alien creature featured in the movie Alien. As the alien, you will probably find your self moving very stealthily through most of the game, choosing your moments to strike. With the ability to crawl on walls and ceilings, the alien missions can get a little disorenting, but you realy wouldn't be much of an alien if you couldn't cling to walls. Why do I still play the game after beating it? you ask. Doesn't the single player get boring after a while? you ask. Well the answer is yes, the single player does get boring after you beat it with all the species, and there is little-to-no replay value for the game. The reason I (and many others) continue to play this game is because of the incredable online play (which is VERY easy to use and compleatly free of charge!) Multiplay for this game is a master piece you need to experience. weather its a multi-species death match on a huge map, or an "evac" game in close quarters, this game is the difinitive online shooter experience, with dozens of multiplayer modes. Something no shooter, alien, or predator fan can afford to miss.

Destroy All Humans Review

Destroy All Humans
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Destroy All Humans" is not exactly the deepest, most challenging, most thought-provoking game you'll play all year, unless you're about 5 and you've given up on "Monsters Inc." But if you're a "Teen" or above who's just looking for some brainless and effortless pick-up-and-play fun, Cryptosporidium-137 is your extraterrestrial.

(By the way, that green "blood" is for all you teens out there, as in "T" rating, so that you understand that it's just a game and you don't go to school the next day and try to anally extract your school chum's brains. Cuz if it was red, there goes the neighborhood. But as long as heads explode in a GREEN mass of goo in the game, no problem kids. And that's great, but I kind of wish they'd gone the whole 9, taken the "M" rating, and made this game as gruesome as it should've been, since it's already pretty marginal. When you've got freshly extracted brains bouncing around in the cornfields, they might as well be dripping with RED blood...lol.)

The graphics in DAH are decent as far as they go - especially the lovely ambient sunlight and rolling cloud effects - but they don't quite go all the way. You get the feeling that this title, like so many, was rushed into production. Much has already been said about the pop-in issue, and indeed, it's truly out of control. Bushes will grow out of the ground at distances of less than 10 virtual feet in front of Crypto, as if his alien presence favorably influences Earth vegetation. It won't necessarily interfere with gameplay since your weapons and psychic abilities have a limited range anyway, but it's pretty annoying and distracting.

The environments are fairly good-looking if you don't get too close. Certainly they do a nice job of suggesting the archetypal sunny pop-culture idea of the 50's - it's all very "Pleasantville." Some scenes on the farm almost look like Hidden Valley Ranch labels...lol. The people likewise look great from a distance, but up close they're as blocky and crudely mapped as anything in the GTAs. It's especially obvious in the cutscenes, in which you see how much they've relied on shading to suggest depth - some of the women appear to have 5 o'clock shadows. Part of this is due to the fact that the levels are relatively large (although nowhere near as large as the smallest GTA), since you explore the same areas on foot and in saucer; so some fine detail has to be sacrificed.

Gameplay is likewise relatively rude and crude. You'll never really have a problem staying alive unless you just aren't paying attention, since Crypto's life bar automatically recharges after a few seconds; so if he's about to die you just jet-pack away, find cover, and wait. The saucer doesn't automatically recharge, but you can find sheild boosters everywhere, and you can actually take damage beyond your saucer's life bar for some reason. For weapons Crypto starts off with a "Zap-O-Matic" and an Anal Probe (which, yes, literally goes up the humans' butts, which inexplicably makes their heads explode), and he gradually acquires new weapons and upgrades. The saucer starts off with a "Death Ray," which does indeed bring massive amounts of death, and an "Abducto Ray," which doesn't actually abduct, but just lifts people and things a few feet above the ground - great for picking up military convoys and slamming them into the sides of government buildings.

Crypto also has some standard "PK" (psychokinesis) abilities which are kind of fun, but nothing new (see "Psi-Ops"). He can lift objects with his mind and pitch them far away; he can read people's (and cows') thoughts and parasitically suck up their "concentration;" he can hypnotize people to create distractions or perform mission-specific tasks; he can assume the general shape of anybody he sees; and of course, he can pop heads like green pus-filled zits. There are a few caveats, but for the most part these abilities, his weapons and his jetpack place Crypto at such an advantage over all adversaries, it's never really a contest.

Not only that, but DAH is extremely short, so it would be hard for anybody to get more than 10 hours out of this. Once you finish all the missions, both mandatory and optional, all that's left is the easter egg hunt for the rest of the "probes" (different from the anal), and this could quickly get boring and tedious.

Still, don't get me wrong, I got this the day it came out, played it through and enjoyed it for what it was worth. But it's such a simple game that I can't say I'd necessarily recommend it to buy as opposed to rent. If you're an alien buff or 50's buff or you just like the pretty, almost-there graphics and fun if basic and repetitive gameplay, you might choose to buy. The game's sense of humor is another selling point, with it's "cute" parodies of 1950's pop-culture, which are often thinly veiled commentaries on modern day government-inspired paranoia and civic unrest (there are many obvious slams on the Bush Administration). I'll keep it around, cuz at the end of the day, after an hour in heavy traffic, who doesn't want to destroy some humans?

I haven't played an FPS in a while and when I had some free time I downloaded the trial and what sold me was the multiplayer which you can play for free. The demo had 2 MP maps but the full version has 12.Most of the MP maps are 5 star. The only downside is finding a multiplayer game online is discouraging but findable.Usually there are a few people playing but when there is not I join a server then in a minute or two people start joining.Makes you think people are ot playing but they will join soon.the solo mission is really good. the demo of the solo mission has a lot of cut scenes and the levels seem small but once you get past that point on the full version there are some very clever map puzzles to figure out.It could be a bit longer on the SP.

UFO: Afterlight Review

OK, this game is GOOD... could be great except it shipped with a lot of bugs that have kept most gamers from playing it.It seems that they're still in a patching phase...
I was lucky.I have Win XP and after getting the newest drivers for my video card I was able to play this game with only a slowdown that occurs because I want to run high end video ;\.I haven't finished it yet, but I've played it enough to give a good review.

It's a tactical rts based on the X-Com genre of games.Characters come with 1 or 2 of 3 possible classes: soldier, scientist, or technician. Your units gain levels in their class when they do something related to that class.Levels mean both basic attribute adjustment and skill points.Skill points allow scientists to research certain tech branches quicker, technicians to produce certain items quicker, soldiers to kill aliens quicker... aaaannnnddd some skills from one class help another class (i.e. a scientist can get medical training and use a medkit in battle while a technician can repair robots and space suits). There's a lot more, but I'll let you discover those yourself.

Back to the tactical. There is an overworld map with territories where you can get resources and place some necessary structures... terraforming, radar, etc.You only have one base, but its enough. This game is real-time, but there is a pause/play control that is of key use during the game.During battle you can have your units pause the game after certain things occur (i.e. they have no 'plan' to do anything, etc). Also in the overworld 'strategic game' after your scientists have finishing researching a technology, when your technicians have finished producing an item, when a unit has finished training or one of your 'class' vehicles has returned to base... you can have the game pause automatically.

Note, in the tactical battle I'd suggest using the 'free' camera mode.Their 'auto' really annoys me.

I think these guys had a great idea, but they released it without enough testing ;\

Check the system requirements if you're thiking of buying and make sure that you update your video drivers if you do buy.Check their support forum as well.Sad to say, but it's likely you'll need it.Also, you will have to install the game under your administrator account. ;\
Good luck.

Resistance: Fall Of Man Review

Resistance: Fall Of Man
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No one can resist the urge to keep playing Resistance: Fall of Man once the game is started. Chapter after chapter of exhilarating battles against a plethora of creatures that you use a plethora of weapons to defeat (and they'll use them against you too).

To really put the plot of the game in context (if you care about the plot), it's well worth the visit to the official Resistance: Fall of Man web site; there's a ton of story there that I'd bet 90% of the people who start the game are unaware of. For me, the story helped me "get into character" for the game. If you just want to start wasting some nasty beasts, "Get to it, soldier!" Rest assured, the story won't help you beat the enemies or evade the barrage of defenses that will be fired at you by them.

As a relatively new gamer, I'm glad that I played Call of Duty 3 Call of Duty 3 before I cracked open Resistance: Fall of Man. It was good FPS training (set in approximately the same time period) for this much more difficult PS3 title.

Resistance has an M (mature gamers only) rating which miffs me a bit, but then I'm a bit more liberal when it comes to what I think might warp the little minds of kids these days.I've seen this classified as a Horror title, but I think that Sci-fi Action is much more fitting. Resistance deserved a T (teen) rating. My kids and I get hung up all too often on sunny days playing Resistance's Co-op Mode when we should be outside playing ball. And hopefully that alone speaks volumes as to how addictively fun this game is.

Co-op Mode is split screen of course because the game is FPS; it would be nice if some games could give the option of switching to a single screen, third person view for Co-op in order to negate the need for split screen, but that would distinctly change to look, range, feel and some of the weaponry...so I assume that's why it's never offered on Co-op mode.

Multi-player is very cool. Multi-player is not like Co-op where you play the Campaign Mode with a partner. In Multi-player you battle against your friends offline (4 player max/split screen) or online (40 player max/full screen). You get some areas of battle to play in that you encountered in Campaign Mode and some new map scematics.

But Resistance's real challenge is in single player Campaign Mode.

Your weapons are plentiful. You start with a pretty standard machine gun (M5A2) that includes a grenade launcher that will become your best "little friend" in the game. It's very useful on the enemies that you encounter most throughout the game. You also get several mean weapons that you pick up from your fallen comrades and defeated beasts including the enemy's main machine gun (The Bullseye...very handy), grenades, a shotgun, a sniper rifle, a radiation blaster (The Auger), a mine thrower, a rapid fire subsonic bolt dispenser (The Hailstorm) and a rocket launcher.

Grenades are key to survival...use them, but you'll want to keep in mind that you can run out real real fast...so use them pretty much exclusively to take down groups of enemies.

(And five other weapons aside from the ones that I mentioned above are unlocked only after beating/completing the game once on medium difficulty or higher.)

If you missed the countless gamer magazines' synopsises of the creature types and the power of the individual weapons, there are some great gamer help web sites that are worth taking a look at to help you strategize (just click on my profile above and email me if you'd like me to point you in the right direction).

And speaking of getting pointed in the right direction, part of the fun of this game is figuring out on your own how to get from chapter to chapter. There are no maps, which at times was frustrating. Let me tell you that if the phrase "the best route is not always the most obvious" ever applied to trying to get from here to there it applies in this game on more than one occasion.

You'll also need to at times navigate a jeep and a tank.

So what exactly are you fighting? Where exactly did they come from? If you're up to the challenge to find out....You're Sgt. Nathan Hale, and you're the only one with a Resistance to the Fall of Man. Prepare for some serious battle.

Alien vs Predator Review

Alien vs Predator
Average Reviews:

I've been playing this game since the demo and received the game today. I was pleasantly surprised on how they did things. It is easy to get the hand of things once you play it a while. The levels are kind of bland, but if you are like me and enjoy games offline and online then it's definitely worth it.

Pros-
-It's AVP! Its back!
-Fun system to choose whether or not you would like to be an alien, predator, or human.
-Unique idea for the most part
-Fun online multiplayer (this will keep you occupied and on edge the whole time)
-Easier learning gap then most FPS's.

Cons
-The graphics aren't as good as I was expecting, most FPS games have a bit better graphics but the graphics on this aren't bad don't get me wrong.
-The trophy kills are horrible in multiplayer, if you do one it's a big chance someone is right behind you to do one to you (similar to the chainsaw on gears of war)
-Some races need tweaked. (I felt that alien was the most powerful in all aspects of online play)
-There should be a better campaign, but I'm satisfied.

All in all it's a great game. I would definitely rent it to make sure you like it, or try the demo first. But if it's your thing hop in. Well worth the purchase for me.

Prey Review

Each year, I wait for something to come out to blow me away. FEAR was the last one that I actually could not get enough of. Now PREY appears, and WHOA, what a ride. Fantastic visuals (I mean FANTASTIC). Great dynamics in control of the characters, cool weapons, the anti gravity stuff and portals are mentioned quite a bit by most who comment on this game, but they are just part of the whole thing.

The voice acting is almost uniformly great (with the exception of Jen sometimes), and the story is mostly original, save the overall plot, which we've seen a zillion times before. But the characters are new to the genre, (nope, no super human marines, or master gunfighters) and treats the traditions of the cherokee with respect and dignity.

There are some moments where it feels like some other games, an occasional dopey boss battle, and too many elevators, but wow, the overall pace, artwork, character control, and AWESOME MUSIC makes it the most movie like video game I've EVER played. Yes, even more than Half Life 2. The health regeneration is a little annoying at first, but then you learn to appreciate it somewhat, as it is less disruptive than having to go back 2 or 3 saves and start over.

One more comment on the music. I was amazed at how cinematic it was. I felt like I was in a live action movie sometimes. Just awesome.

My library of PC games numbers over 100, and I've played them all. But this one is in a class by itself. Yes, its somewhat short, but the work that went into it was intense.

I would ignore most of the adolescents that talk about the "doom 3 engine" (heck most don't even know what it means, they are just repeating some noise they saw on some forum somewhere). What theinside technology is has no bearing on the implementation of the game, story, visuals, music and scenarios. This thing is just plain great if you like the alien/hero shooters.

I can't wait for more. Kudos to the developers and artists that built this thing. What a piece of work
