Monster Rancher 2 Review

Monster Rancher 2

I am TOTALLY addicted to this game! I've played many monster raising RPGs, but this one beats them all! The gameplay isn't long and boring, and the graphics are cool! The idea of the game is that you are a begginningmonster trainer, and you have to raise the ultimate monster to compete inthe major four, a set of the top hardest tournaments (I know, sounds a lotlike poke'mon's Elite Four, but trust me, its different.) There are threeways to get new monsters, you can generate one from a CD, buy one at themarket, or combine to of them to get a new one. I liked the combining partbecause the game tells you what chance you have of getting a good monster. After you obtain a monster, you take it to you ranch to be trained. You canincrease it's stats, let it rest, or enter a battle tournament. The battlesare very cool because they are simple without being easy. You control whichdirection you r monster moves, when it attacks and when, and ultimately howpowerful its attacks are. The game gets more complex toward the end at agood pace. The plot lacks a little creativity, but that is quicklyforgotten as one can easily get completely obsessed with this game.

This game lets you you build a vertical empire. As you build, your population grows larger. You start with $2,000,000 and as your population grows so does your fund. As you achieve higher ratings (1 star, 2 star, 3star, 4 star, 5 star, and "the tower"), you can build morethings. To be awarded the stars needed to get 5 stars and higher you haveto meet certain requirements. You can name 20 people and 20 tenants. Thisgame takes a few months so it will pass time. It is also a good game if youlike only small amounts of pressure. As you journey on your trip to a"the tower" ranking you take up many challanes. Keeping goodevaluation and dealing with terrorists who will go to any level to chargeyou money. But you might not have to pay them, if you have good security. Ithink this would be a good game to have because of all of the traits listedabove. So consider it when you want a game.

Monster Rancher 3 Review

Monster Rancher 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Monster Rancher 3 is a very solid game. The third in the series it has improved graphics, slightly more difficult fighting, and much less repetitive game play. This game is a winner for anyone who enjoys a more character driven strategy type game - although at first glance it appears to be a kids game, I think that it is challenging enough to interest people of all ages.
The graphics although a bit Disney are very good. The monsters are more detailed and the ability to personalize them is fun (especially when the accessory used can change their character traits). The ability to move to any of 5 different training grounds breaks up some of the monotony of seeing the same background all the time.
This game is more strategy then fighting, but the battles are one of the game's highlights. The number of monsters that can be generated from a CD or DVD seem much bigger and they appear the have much more detailed personalities, skills, and quirks.
The game play is much less repetitive then previous games in the series. It is obvious that the game designers went to a great deal of trouble to come up with a variety of subplots, side characters, new areas to explore. The number of people who come to talk and fight with you is much bigger and having rivals in battle ads a touch of excitement to the game. The new areas are also fun to explore.
All in all this game is a winner for anyone who liked the other Monster Rancher Games. Although the inability to combine monsters will be a disappointment to some, I personally like the fact that upon the death of my current monster my next monster can inherit abilities and skills. The ability to skip through some of the repetitive training and feeding scenes is also a huge plus.
This is a good game to buy because it has a high replay level. When your monster dies, you have to start over with a new one with its own quirks and abilities. Plus the temptation to find and raise some of the stranger monsters is irresistible. If you haven't enjoyed or tried this type of game before, I would rent it first though, as this is a type of game that people either love or hate.

Product Description:
This anticipated sequel to the popular Monster Rancher 2 takes place long ago, before the official declaration of monster battles as a competitive sport. There lived at the time a group called the Tochikans. No one but the leader of the Tochikans had the power to generate monsters from Saucer Stones. As more people began migrating to the land, monsters were given to them to help with labor and ease the everyday hardships of their lives. Over time, monster battles began taking place at various festivals and town get-togethers. This quickly became a popular activity, and eventually large-scale battles were held. People started to hire full-time "breeders" in order to remain competitive in the fast-paced world of monster battles.
Monster Rancher 3 features cel-shading technology to give it a real cartoon look and feel. Players can create a stable full of monsters using ordinary CDs, DVDs, or other video games. The game generates monsters unique to each set of data, and a player can then raise, train, breed, and enter them into battle with other monsters. The first game that utilizes Sony's Picture Paradise technology, Monster Rancher 3 lets players take pictures with their Sony digital cameras and transfer them to monsters in the game.

SimAnt Review

I can't believe how many addle-brained nitwits have written negative reviews here. This is one of the most inventive, open-ended, and rewarding games I've EVER seen, and this is a guy who's played his fair share of video games, both console and PC.There's so much to do with this that you can literally entertain yourself for days on end with it.Heck, you can even play a special "Experimental Mode" if you like, create a sprawling colony of thriving, successful black or red ants, and then annihilate them with whatever sick, twisted device of mayhem you choose, whether it be a spray can, a legion of spiders, or a swarm of enemy ants.BWUAHAHAHA!!!

But even beyond the sadistic element to this, this game is wonderfully intriguing on every level. You get to create your own society as an ant, building up your family, helping them succeed, deciding on the behavior and caste of your colony to find the best formula, and conquering whatever foes may try to interfere with your plans for complete domination of the back yard!My description here doesn't even do it justice.Just PLEASE, do yourself a favor and check this one out.If you've got some neurons cracking up there, you'll get into this, big time.

Rollercoaster Tycoon 2: Triple Thrill Pack Review

Rollercoaster Tycoon 2: Triple Thrill Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 - Triple Thrill Pack" finally delivers the RCT2 I wanted. It not only lets you simulate building amusement parks, complete with rides, food & drink stalls, and other attractions, but this pack includes a huge number of different coasters and examples of each type, and also allows you to try to build your own coasters. There are many other types of amusement park rides, including log flumes and water slides, merry-go-rounds and ferris wheels, go kart race tracks and car rides, and many others. There are also over a dozen scenarios ranging from fairly easy to fairly difficult. The fact that all the scenarios are accessible from the beginning of the game is a big plus.

The replay value of this game is great. I find myself coming back to see if I can better my previous rating or ending park value, or both, or add something to my previous parks to make them more interesting. I know I've spent countless hours designing little tweaks to make my parks or rides "just right".

The primary program, "Roller Coaster Tycoon II," provides many good features that are a big improvement over RCT1, but the same graphics engine is used.I really like this sim game - probably more than any other game like it.If you like amusement parks and roller coasters, and you like games like "Civilization" and other simulations, you'll love Roller Coaster Tycoon 2.

"Wacky Worlds" adds a lot of scenery like the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower and many others to make your park a true international experience. There are over 20 new scenarios, 50 new ride types (not all of which will be coasters), and about a total of 250 new game elements. But the total of the new elements in "Wacky Worlds" wasn't worth the price of admission all by itself.

"Time Twister" adds even more great rides and some really wonderful scenarios to the overall mix. There's a few for every age - from the Medieval to the present and beyond. There's also a few new rides and attractions."Time Twister" also suffered from not having nearly enough material to satisfy RCT fans by itself.

But now you can Triple your fun with this all in one pack.Amazon.Com doesn't have half stars, so I can't give this game the 4 1/2 stars it deserves, but I'm sure if you've found previous games in the series interesting. you'll love tripling your fun!

If you've never tried Roller Coaster Tycoon, and you like amusement parks, you'll love the ability to design and build your own amusement park. RCT2 gives you almost everything that the old game had. But if you've already tried RCT1 you may find that this game just isn't different enough from the original, even though it includes the new scenario designer and other new features. The graphics haven't been updated much at all - and the graphics were already a little dated in RCT1.

But if you =really= want the =complete= pack, do an Internet search for "RCT2 User Created Expansion Set" and download that. You will be highly surprised at the many new features, rides and other things that fan-created expansion does for this game.

Now that my predictions have come to pass and everything is available for RCT2, I very highly recommend this purchase over any of the other stand alone sets, including the incomplete "Combo Pack".But if you already =love= RCT2, then just wait a few weeks - Chris Sawyer and Atari are rolling out RCT3 - which finally has a 3D feel and a coaster cam! If you've never tried to build your own amusement park, and had a secret yen to try it, then RCT2 is a great game. Watch out Disney World - here comes Roller Coaster Tycoon 2!

Monster Rancher 4 Review

Monster Rancher 4

Tecmo has vastly improved the storyline and features in Monster Rancher 4.Now instead of waiting until the game tells you to go on an adventure, you decide when you want to make the trip. There is a lot more interaction with your monsters in this version. You can praise or scold them and you decide when to feed them. There is more interaction with characters in the towns than in the past also.Being able to raise 5 monsters at a time is awesome as well. The negatives?Well, if you freeze a monster in this version, you can only use the monster to combine with another monster. No freezing a well trained monster that you pull out to fight with when you need gold. Also, it is a little more difficult to determine exactly when to scold or praise your monster, but that is part of the fun.All in all, this is an awesome game for the whole family.

Digimon World: Dusk Review

Digimon World: Dusk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dusk Is part of a set of two games. The only real difference between the two is what specie are available so make sure you check which version you really want. The plot is typical follow an up and coming trainer as some unspeakable evil tries to conquer the world, but the real attraction here is the gameplay. Lovers of pokemon will be familiar with the party of critters battle system though the creation and abilities are a lot easier on Digimon and don't detract from the game. Farms have changed a bit, theme music and skins now make farms suited to one type or another.
Overall it's very much another version of digimon world for the DS, new species, slight improvements longer story. Not bad all in all though extremely young players may struggle with the aspects of monster raising as they're more complex than pokemon.
The verdict: Not bad, pick it up if you like this type of thing.

Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon Review

Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rune Factory is one of the best versions of Harvest Moon to come out in a while. This review, I should warn you, is targeted at those individuals who have played previous installments in the series. If you are an experienced player of the Harvest Moon franchise, like I am, then you will find much that is new in this experience.

Graphically, this game is impressive. The environments, although 2-D, look beautiful in their hand-drawn style. The characters are 3-D, and it gives the game an interesting look.

The farming aspects of this harvest moon game are probably the best they have ever been. There is a huge variety of crops you can grow. You are also given a good size field to farm. Not only can you farm your own land, but you can also farm in caves where seasons never change. This allows for extended growing periods. In addition to this, livestock in Rune Factory are monsters you befriend in the caves. These monsters can help on your farm, give eggs, give milk, or give wool, just like traditional farm livestock.

In addition to this, you can forge weapons and tools, cook foods, and enhance other items in your inventory. However, these aspects don't come into the game until later on when you make improvements to your home.

The combat system in the game is handled much like the farming system. You press the same buttons and can even use your farm tools in combat. In fact, they are so integrated that you can use your sword to cut weeds and you can water your enemies to death. However, for best results, you should cut weeds with the sickle and defeat your enemies with a weapon of some sort. Farming and fighting both drain the same stamina meter. Once your stamina is depleted, fighting/farming depletes your health. This is both good and bad. It is good because it adds challenge and tension to the dungeon battles, but it is bad because it limits the amount of work and battle you can do in a day. There are in-game remedies to this, but I will not discuss these in much detail. I will just say they add to the overall challenge and only work to make the game even better.

Other aspects that have made past Harvest Moon games great are also present here. Some of them are even better. There are ten women in the game that you can marry. Those familiar with past Harvest Moon games know how this system works.

There are also a number of different shops that you can visit in the town. The library, for the first time ever I believe, is actually useful. Not only can you go to the library to read hints on how to play the game, but you can actually buy books at the library now. These books actually contribute to improved gameplay. For example, you can buy spellbooks that will allow you to perform magic of various sorts. There are also cookbooks, forging handbooks, and other books that come in handy once you expand your home and also purchase a kitchen.

The other major addition to the gameplay within the town is that you can sell items directly to stores. You can use the shipping bin on your farm, but then you would need to wait until 5PM for the profits to roll in. If you go to a store to sell items, you can get the profits quickly and see exactly how much you are making on each item you sell.

In conclusion, this is an awesome game. It is one of the best Harvest Moon games ever, and one of the greatest games on the Nintendo DS. I have only touched the surface of the game in this review. There is much more to see and do. Buy the game, play the game, and have a great time farming and fighting in Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon.

Viva Pi?ata (Platinum Family Hits) Review

Viva Pi?ata
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In Viva Pinata you have inherited a garden in a fantasy world populated by living pinatas and an assortment of odd characters.Your mission is to build your garden to attract pinatas to live there.Everything you grow in your garden, including the pinatas, vegetables, flowers, and trees, can be sold for chocolate coins. You can use the coins to buy more seeds and grow more plants or to otherwise improve your garden.Viva Pinata is like a cross between Pokemon and The Sims and virtual pets, but I found that the result is greater than the sum of its parts!

This is a sandbox game of the best sort. You can make whatever decisions you want to and your garden can look however you want. You have the ability to dig ponds, grow grass, build houses for your pinatas, and all sorts of other activities that I am still discovering several hours into the experience. The decisions you make about how your garden develops will determine the kind of pinata who want to live there. The open-ended nature of the game is its best feature, and it really makes you feel like you are in control of the game's environment. The feeling of empowerment that kids receive playing Viva Pinata is enhanced by the excitement of constantly finding new things to do and play with.

I am impressed that a game that is so easy for kids to pick up is also so complex. My daughter is nine and was familiar with the controls and basic concepts within a half-hour.Yet the underlying concepts of the game are complicated. The skills I see her working on in this game primarily have to do with resource management, which as we adults know is critical for daily life. You have a limited amount of space for your garden (just like in real life), yet if you are not organized in your approach then the garden will quickly become a place of chaos.Kids will also learn the concepts of working to make money and how to budget for the next big item they need to improve their garden.

As other reviewers have stated, this looks like a game for kids, but it will suck an adult into its world just as easily.I couldn't wait for my kids to go to sleep the first night so I could start on my own garden.Time is greatly accelerated in the game, and the result is that you are very busy - you may suddenly look up from the game and see that a few hours have passed in the real world almost as quickly. The pinata are just the right amount of cute so that they are fun to watch, not annoying. There is no lull in the action for at least a few hours, at which time you may have been able to hire some helpers to take off some of the pressures of a big garden, such as watering and gathering your sellable items. This too is a good introduction to kids of the concept of people management.Lots of times you have to tell your helpers what to do, rather than just letting them do their own thing.Otherwise, their priority list is typically different from yours and those plants that you just planted may die because your helper was busy watering something less important.

Viva Pinata has way too much to offer to cover it all in such a short review. The environment is incredibly well done, from the sounds to the graphics. The game play is very addictive.Playing Viva Pinata actually got me excited to go out and do lawn work in the back yard! For parents wondering if this game is suitable for their kids, I will say that I am picky about what I let my kids watch and play and there is nothing here which offends me.There are all sorts of euphemisms around breeding pinatas (they call it "romancing") that sound very innocent but will make the adult chuckle. It is very tastefully done. And there is no doubt that your kids will be using their brains a lot more while playing this game than while playing the typical platform-style kids game. This is exactly the kind of game I was looking for to provide my kids with an enriching, non-violent video game experience. If Viva Pianta is an indication of the future of kids video games then the future is very promising.

Lost In Blue 2 Review

Lost In Blue 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This one fixes some concerns that people had with the first one: Pick Gal or Boy Character to play and more to do.

Lost in Blue 2 like the first one strands you and a similarly-aged young girl or boy on a deserted island with nothing but your wits and your instincts to save the two of you. Every day is a challenge to face when you're alone and have nothing to sustain you, but the island is full of everything you'll need to stay alive -- if you can find it and grab it.

As the days pass on, you'll grow more comfortable in your home, with make-shift tools and weapons allowing you to create traps, hunt for meat, store supplies to get through harsh weather, and cook filling meals.

Just making it through the day is hard enough, but you will eventually find the strength to be able to explore the island and search for some way to get home.

Like the first game, creative ways to use the Nintendo DS are used to bringing this adventure to life. You fish and hunt by touch, tapping the screen to snare your prey.

Overall - a great adventure game that will please fans of the first game.

Newcommers are better off starting with this one, there's more to do and your partner is not helpless like in the first Lost in Blue game.

Capitalism 2 Review

Capitalism 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This title is less of a game than it is a tool for immersing yourself in a business environment. This is good because this was how it was advertised to me before I bought it.That said, it is very good at the latter, and fairly decent at the former.

The goal is relatively straightforward.Make money, hit some profit targets (or whatever the scenario asks for - could be cornering a market, achieving aggregate sales targets, etc), and succeed at capitalism.

The gameplay is very deep.Price setting, factory building (and floor planning, even), real estate, economic cycles, a slew of products to choose from, technology research, training investments, marketing, income statements and balance sheets for comparative analysis, stock market gyrations - if you can find it in the Wall Street Journal, chances are high it's in this game too. And, most features are realistic enough to give plausibility to the entire enterprise.I like the focus on total capital rather than just running a business with high sales levels - I think most people considering this title would agree that wealth and income streams are more important than simply being popular (and not rich).

The graphics are in between Sim City 2000 and 3000, which was the standard when it was released, and are fairly decent even today. They do not detract from gameplay.

The sound is not bad, either. The sound effects are quite nice - I like how they added touches like playing a clip of the trading room floor when you look at the stock market. The music...can be turned off, unless you like being in an elevator.

The replayability is where this game shines. This game has a mammoth store of scenarios, and ends with a scenario that encompasses all of the previous ones combined (I have put in 12 hours on this one scenario alone and still have not completed it, although it was mainly due to tediousness rather than difficulty - imagine cornering not just the auto market but all types of consumer and industrial markets from tires to toothpaste, along with all aspects of retailing, manufacturing, and commodity production).I found the challenge factor to be very near the top of strategy games in general, and very much enjoyed the complete non-linearity with which you could accomplish tasks and goals.

One caveat, which may further reveal the depth of the game: When you play this game, and put your all into it, you'll begin to wonder why you're not simply reading *real* market trends and income statements, and overseeing your *real* businesses and investments. That, more than anything else, made me put this game aside, and pick up the Wall Street Journal once more.Otherwise, a great business simulator, and fairly entertaining at that.

Backyard Sports: Sandlot Sluggers Review

The Good:

*Great cast of charters with different abilities
*Great-looking ballparks
*Wacky Power-ups give the game the arcade feelThe Bad:

*Minor gameplay annoyancesThe Bottom Line:

If you have played this game last decade on your PC, you probably remember the characters Pablo Sanchez, Dimitri Petrovich and Vicki Kawaguchi and others. They are all back.It seems like they have grown up, too.In the PC version they seem to be somewhere in middle school and now they look a bit older, about early High School age. This is also supported by Pablo's ability to speak English(in the last decade's version he couldn't as was clearly stated in his bio.)

The Story Mode involves you making a character and going around other ballparks, beating other teams and stealing their captain before your final challenge of taking on the bully team. The game is fairly shallow in terms of replay value, but because it is a budget value game($29.99 opening day price,) the short burst of fun fits the price tag.

Minor annoyances are sometimes being out on a shallow hit to the outfield and all the fielders seem to have rocket arms.Mini games are also very shallow and quick.

At the end, this is still a good family game, especially if you like baseball.

Attention achievement hunters:Achievements are fairly easy and you should get all 1,000 in about 5 hours or so.

Sim Tower: The Vertical Empire Review

Sim Tower: The Vertical Empire

Sim Tower is fun to play, but once you get everything set up in your tower, there are not a whole lot of options to add new items. You have to earn stars and you do so by adding in items such as condos, restaurents, and hotel rooms. As you gain stars, you gain more items to add in your hotel such as stores and a movie theater.Once you get so far in the game, or if you run out of money, there is not a whole lot you can do.It is fun to play though, especially if your just looking for a game to play but don't have a lot of time.

Product Description:
Maxis takes their Sim-building line vertical with SimTower, an original concept from Japan (where vertical living is much more commonplace than in many parts of the world). Your goal is to build a skyscraper that is both tall, aethestically pleasing, popular, and, most importantly, economically profitable. To be successful, your building cannot just be levels upon levels of officespace, or just an apartment sky-rise, but a multi-functional haven for humanity featuring everything from penthouses to theatres, restaurants to shopping malls. The centerpiece of your tower design is your elevators and proper managment is the key.You can watch your Sims enter and leave your grand tower, getting impatient waiting for elevators, or having a hectic work day at the office. You can even train in on one or two, to server as a metering stick for their compatriots, or just to peek into the average workday of the little people living in your building. Or watch the security and resuce crews race as distasters like bomb threats and fires rampage through your well-crafted skyscraper.

This game is wonderfully addictive. There are so many types of fish to breed, and there are many wonderful features, like the different speeds. So be sure to pause your game if you can't feed your fish every couple of hours...they will die. But if that happens, don't fret, you CAN indeed restart your game.Just go down to the right corner of the menu screen and click change player. This feature allows you to even have multiple games for either you, or other members of your family. It will set you up with a brand new game.Happy breeding!

Tradewinds Legends Review

Tradewinds Legends
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found "Tradewinds Legends" through Big Fish Games - which offers 60 minutes of free play time for this game. And I have to say that I was hooked from the time my first ship set sail!

This game has 2 modes of play, "Story Mode" & "Free Trade Mode".In "story mode", after choosing the character you want to play (each with different abilities, traits, backgrounds, & personalities), you begin completing tasks for the different sultans of each port & increasing your wealth through the buying & selling of various products in the ports. In order to do this you have to buy low & sell high, build a fleet of strong ships, & protect yourself & other's through battling the pirates who invade, pillage, & steal in these waters.

In "Free Trade Mode" the only difference is that you don't complete the tasks of the sultans - everything else is the same.

After victoriously battling your way to the top for the first time, you're given the option to create your own character by choosing their name, gender, class, nationality, career, & picture from the options given.

I have to agree with previous reviewers in that the graphics are simplistic - but it really doesn't negatively impact how fun "Tradewinds" is to play. And, on top of being fun to play, it's a great way for kids to learn the value of money, and the impact of such things as: how interest works both in the saving & borrowing of money, as well as the concept of finding the best value for the items you want to buy.

Overall, this is a great game for adults & kids alike! Not only is it fun, but it can also teach the value of a dollar.Because of this, it's also a great game for parents & children to play together!

I've played all three and this one just may be my favorite. The Appeal adds a lot of new strategy and the parks and shops are fun to build. The rating system was a little strange, but overall, it's a great game...very addicting!
