Escape from Monkey Island Review

Escape from Monkey Island
Average Reviews:

I'd never really been all that keen on the Adventure game genre, up until yesterday -- the turning point was when I was over at a friend's house, watching his son play Escape from Monkey Island. What a blast!I went directly out and bought a copy for myself, and was up until 5:00AM playing.
I used to think that adventure games were not involved enough -- there was just never enough depth in most of the ones I'd played. But this one is great on so many different levels -- story, humour, puzzles, dialog, voice acting, graphics (okay, the graphics aren't exactly cutting edge, but the setting really drew me in).I have developed an affinity with the main character.
According to my friend, most of the LucasArts adventure games are as fun as this one, and the reason the adventure genre is supposedly dead, is because at one point the market was saturated with FMV garbage (probably the stuff I had played).
If EMI is any indication of how fun LucasArts adventure games are, I'm going to have to buy a bunch more -- let my wife knock on the computer room door all she wants, but I'm not coming out for at least a year! :-)

One of the first real adventure games also happened to be one of the funniest and most memorable..All I can say is that if you havent had the privilage of experiencing this game when it came out, you probally will not be able to now unless your threshold for graphics is extremely high..I hope and pray that adventure games will undergo another renaisance and offer up such unique, genuinely involving experiences as this one did

Product Description:
Deep in the Caribbean lies Melee Island, ruled by the beautiful governor Elaine Marley. The cruel pirate LeChuck is deeply in love with her - so deeply that he refuses to accept his own death! As a ghost, he dwells with his undead crew somewhere near the mysterious Monkey Island. You are Guybrush Threepwood, a young man whose only wish is to become a real pirate. At the Scumm Bar you meet three pirates who tell you'll have to complete three difficult tasks in order to be worthy of this title. Could Guybrush ever suspect that while trying to complete those tasks, he will encounter the governor Elaine Marley, fall in love with her, and face the anger of the dreadful ghost pirate LeChuck?! This is when Guybrush' adventure truly begins! The Secret of Monkey Island is an adventure game that utilizes the command verb-based SCUMM interface first introduced in Maniac Mansion: you construct commands for Guybrush by clicking on the appropriate verb, and then clicking on the inventory item or an object in the room you want to interact with. It is the first LucasArts' adventure game in which it is impossible to get irrevocably stuck or to die. The branching dialogue system, where you choose one of the available responses while talking to people, allows you to talk to characters in different ways without fearing a wrong choice. There are plenty of inventory-based puzzles to solve, and even "insult sword-fighting" to participate in, where Guybrush has to prove his wit is as sharp as his sword!

Buccaneer's Bounty Review

This is a great bundle. Tortuga and Port Royale II are similar games that give the player the opportunity to sail between several Carribean islands and amass a fortune by either trading, taking contracts/missions, pirating, or a combination of all styles. Patrician is more town based and emphasizes RTS style play centered on a successful economy.

Viewpoint in all three games varies depending on what you are doing. Port Royale and Patrician use an isometric view in towns, while Tortuga uses a landscape style "view from the sea" interface. Players may select buildings to open menus that pertain to each particular structures function. Tortuga and PR use an overhead view while the player is at sea, using a blown up map of the islands to travel.

All three titles are fun and have their own unique merits. I prefered Tortuga as it offered what I thought was a superior level of gameplay balance. PR, however, has an added bit of depth that allows the player to actually build structures on islands and start producing products to sell. This offers a nice added bit of depth and challenge as it then becomes necessary to make sure your factories have raw materials, make sure you have an adequate workforce, and make sure your workforce has housing etc..

I have played Patrician least of the the 3 which accounts for my limited comments.

While a little dated graphically all three titles offer solid gameplay experiences at a remarkably affordable price. Additionally, there are not too many current generation games that offer similar gameplay.

If you can find a copy of this, =get= it. I bought it (twice)for a high price and a low price. It's a great value either way,and a good choice for the casual gamer (who doesn't mind getting hopelessly addicted).
The original Civilization is here, as is Heroes of Might and Magic (I). Both of these games are =still= more addictive and playable than 98% of games released. In addition, you get Conquest of the New World Deluxe, the first X-Com and Railroad Tycoon (all on one CD). All of these games are classics; most have had successful sequels. (But Heroes of Might And Magic I, in particular, is still as playable as, and a pleasant break from its sequels.)
On top of that you get three other CDs with Jagged Alliance, M.A.X and Dark Colony. Dark Colony is both the newest the least inspired of this auspicious group (and the hardest to get working) but it still has some very cool features.
Get it while you can folks.END

Skies of Arcadia : Legends Review

Skies of Arcadia : Legends
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Skies of Acradia Legends is the revised version of the origional Dreamcast title. As such, it is really not much more than an add on to the old game.Graphics and gameplay have changed very little and storyline is mostly the same.Really the only thing that makes this game a must buy for all RPG loving Gamecube owners is the fact that Skies of Arcadia is great.Peroid.
Following the basic guidelines set by the beloved Final Fantasy series, Skies of Arcadia starts with Vyse, a young Blue Rouge sky pirate.Over the course of his adventures he will meet new people, gain new powers, and kill entire populations of random beasts. What makes Skies so much more than a FF rip off is the setting, a world of floating continents and powerful flying warships.Few games place the importance of exploring like Skies. You will literally need to fly into every corner of the map if yu expect to win the game.
Combat is a slight twist on the standard fare. Both ship and personal combat revolves around the idea of placing in commands then letting the move play itself out.Fastest charaters go first and slowest last. Its fun and useful and if you want to go get a drink, the action can continue without you. Ship battles are only slightly different but even more fun to watch.
The story in and of itself is a great one and will keep you well interested throughout.Although Vyse is placed on a very set path, at any time a player can leave it and go off in search of battles and "discoveries" which can be found by searching the skys. The new Wanted Battles also allow a bit more variety in movement and a new set of powerful foe.Although the ending is not nearly so twisted as FFVII, it is plenty interesting.
The only real problem with Skies is the high level of random encounters and their monotony.Though lower than the Dreamcast title, you still only have about 15-20 seconds to fly around before you are attacked by another dozen enemies. If you are trying to find discoveries or treasure chests, this can quickly become annoying.Fortunetly the new "moonfish" quest will give you a way out of this fairly early, if you should want.
Overall, this is the best RPG for the Gamecube to date. This is not suprising because Skies was the best RPG on the Dreamcast to date(minus Grandia II).If you like RPG's or even like a bit of flying around and exploring, I highly recommend this game for purchase.Like it, Live it, Love it.

Playmobil: Pirates Review

Playmobil: Pirates
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a 38 year old male gamer with an 8 year old son who still enjoys his Playmobil toys. Playmobil toys have always had a soft spot in my heart because my son grew up on them, and as a parent I love them because they're sturdy, adorable, and delightfully simple while offering interesting themes and endless variety...they're a lifelong classic toy like Legos.

Anyway, out of my admiration and nostalgia for Playmobil toys, and the fact that this game was only $20, I figured I'd give it a shot. Although I have a DS like my son does, I haven't found many games I enjoy playing on it, because I just don't get the point of playing a game on a 3-inch screen...I have trouble immersing myself in something so tiny. But there are a special few games that I've found engaging on the DS...Lego Batman is one, and this Playmobil Pirates is another. The graphics are great (especially the cut-scenes), the dialogue is funny, the gameplay is entertaining and challenging without being frustrating (except for a few cases), and the minigames are fun and a neat addition.

The game is well done, melding game elements from proven performers. For example, I recognized a lot of the successful elements from the Grand Theft Auto series, where (in this case) you must earn enough dough to buy, repair and upgrade your pirate ship, and a decently long story-driven mission structure that also allows you to spend hours in diversionary activities like earning money by trading goods across the islands, sinking ships for their loot or fighting sea monsters for cash, and playing the minigames on the islands whenever you're ashore.

There are also two minigames found on the high seas themselves, should you be lucky enough to stumble on them (although they're included in the missions as well if you don't find them just sailing around): a "rescue the castaways" time-limited game where you fling life rings to drifting castaways in the water, and a "diving for treasure" game where you must catch bubbles but avoid jellyfish on the way down to the sea bottom, grab the treasure chest, and repeat the feat on the way back up. Diving for treasure is great fun. Rescuing the castaways was a bit more challenging and less satisfying, but I got better when I prioritized the nearer castaways over the ones further out, because the nearer ones allow for a faster reload of the next life ring.

There were a few parts of the game that were frustratingly hard and required several retries, but the game is forgiving, as you never lose the money you've acquired to date, no matter how many times or ways you die (although you can lose your ship if you're not careful, and if you don't have any money for a new one, it can be a long climb back up to the lifestyle you became accustomed to!).

One island I found particularly difficult to traverse, so I just mostly avoided it. The final mission calls for a fully-tricked out ship and decent maneuvering skills, as you must first battle and sink six ships before you can even land on the island to rescue the mermaid where she is being held captive. If you've gotten used to the more advanced side-shooting ships throughout the game, it shouldn't be too bad. I had trouble at first with the side shooters, so I stuck with the cheaper front-shooter. But that meant I wasn't really ready for the final mission when I got to it, and I had to practice that attack several times before I could break through the protective blockade. The moral of the story is to get used to the side-shooters early!

The game supports wireless play with a friend with 2 DS cards, and will even do one of its minigames (its version of Battleship) with only 1 DS card shared between the two players.

A note to parents: I was surprised to find the word "damn" in one line of dialogue, and the half-censored word "sh.." as in "the bird sh.. in my eye," which is an actual line of dialogue in the game. Even the marketing language has the word "pimp" as in "pimp out your ship," which seems a little over-the-top for the target audience of kids. These three instances of stronger language gave me pause with regard to my 8-year old playing it, but are not a show-stopper. However, some parents may find that too objectionable and ought to be forewarned. But aside from these few exceptions, I found the game quite harmless, and it always carries the sunny, light-hearted spirit of the Playmobil toys themselves.

This is a delightful, colorful, and fun game that I couldn't put down until I finished all 70 missions, which I did in about 15-20 hours. I highly recommend it!

Having enjoyed Playmobil Pirates so much, I can't wait for Playmobil Knights when it comes out in a few weeks!

Sid Meier's Pirates! Review

Parents: I have absolutely no idea why they gave this game a "T" for teen. The content in this game is light hearted and humerous for any age. Understanding how to play might be a bit tough for energetic little ones, but chances are if they are patient enough to books read by themselves they'll be old enough able to handle this game with no real problem. Be aware though that this game is direct towards those types who like games that usually involve a good deal of time (think monopoly, risk, chess, checkers, ect.)

Everbody I know who has played this game loves it and I...I am not sure why. This game is incrediblely simple and repetitive with a lot of stuff they could have packed into it left out. It has almost zero story. The mini games are few and always the same. Graphically the game is pleasing and the music is happy and positive, but after a while all the environments are pretty much the same. Basically, you could finish the whole game in a few hours if you wanted.

Yet, it's still so fun that you can just keep playing it over and over. It's one of those unique game that you play for about a couple hours a day and it never gets old. Time just flys when your playing this thing and I don't I'll ever really understand why. It only has about four minigames in it, yet me and the rest of my family still find it hard to put down.

Pirates of the Caribbean The Legend of Jack Sparrow Review

Pirates of the Caribbean The Legend of Jack Sparrow
Average Reviews:

There are a few sections in this game with annoying glitches. Some controls are a bit tricky to get a hang of and don't always work the first time around. You have to be positioned just so to make some of them work.I'm talking about environmental controls, such as opening chests, turning cranks, etc.The fighting controls couldn't be clearer, and add a lot to the game.It makes it seem like not just a hack-your-way-through-it kind of thing, because you get some good moves to work with (including one where you knee your enemies in a very sensitive spot, which is one we just never play in front of our young son because we don't want to give him ideas!).When Jack gets his bombs and Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann get their hatchets, it's even more fun.Every now and then, and I haven't figured this out, but there's a fish barrel to reload hatchets so that Will and Elizabeth are throwing fish instead of hatchets, but it does the same damage.I'm sure this was just the video game programmers having some fun.

The game is really a lot of fun!If you loved Pirates of the Caribbean and you like video games for their stories and for the fun of playing them instead of for a lot of blood, guts, and sex, you'll really enjoy this game.(In case that wasn't clear, there is no blood, guts, or sex in this game.)

I played for a while before I allowed my son to see the game. After I approved, he and my husband played for quite a long time and had a lot of fun with it.Now I have to sneak to get my play time!

The basic idea of the game is Jack Sparrow telling the events of Pirates of the Caribbean from his own point of view (with some embellishments, of course). In some instances, the other characters even comment on it."I wasn't here!"And my favorite one, when Will Turner started speaking a bunch of lines that were obviously Jack Sparrow kind of talk, and he stopped and said, "What is this you have me saying?"

So this game covers not just the movie, but extra things as well. You get to go to China (by the way: do NOT play the dragon chase scene in co-op mode... we only beat it when we did it single player), fight a pirate called Black Smoke James, and many other fun little extras.

I wish this game had a three player co-op mode!We love video games that make us laugh, and this one definitely does do that.

This is a great deal, a 2CD game with excellent animation, great voiceacting, and a script with all sorts of twists, gags, and memorable linesthat you'll find yourself repeating long after you've finished thegame.
The game focuses on the exploits of Guybrush Threepwood, a MightyPirate, and his neverending struggle against the evil (and dead) pirateLeChuck.Guybrush's love, Elaine Marley, has been turned into a statue ofgold thanks to a cursed engagement ring and its up to Guybrush to restoreher.
Lucasarts has always been the king of adventure games, and Curse ofMonkey Island is no different. There's a bit of simulated combat, puzzlesolving. character interaction, and just plain fun as Guybrush attempts torecruit a pirate crew and sail off to find a cure for his beloved Elaine.
Along the way he meets vegetarian cannibals, lactose intolerane volcanogods, Murray the talking skull, Dingy Dawg, and all sorts of otherinteresting folks.
Also, Curse of Monkey Island is a game that you canlet your children play without worrying about them being exposed to gore orprofanity. The world is light hearted and funny.
I hightly reccomendthis game, its a refrehsing break from a lot of the gore fests andultra-serious games out there.

Sid Meier's Pirates Review

Sid Meier's Pirates
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A beautiful update to a classic, highly playable game. This game is based on one of the first "sandbox" games in which you determine the pace, direction, and goals of the game. You start out motivated by revenge: what did the robber baron do with your family? Soon, you get a ship of your own and can sail the Caribbean at your leisure. The only things that constrain you are the rules of the sea: don't run out of food, don't run aground, don't mistreat your crew or they will mutiny, and don't pick on other vessels that are bigger than you.

You can outfit your ship with different cannons/sails/powder/bunks/armor, any of which affect your ability to do battle. Your character can ally himself (sorry ladies, no "Monkey Island"-style gender equality in a Sid Meier game) with different factions (English/Spanish/Dutch/French, all loosely based in history), and go dancing with governor's daughters in order to win their favor ... and if you're lucky, they'll also give you land, gold, influence, or useful gifts like the +10 Fencing Ability Puffy Shirt (I am not making this up)!

Did I mention the swordfights? They're straight out of Hollywood, full of chivalry and derring-do. You don't need to be a fighting game expert to win a battle; the action sequences are only a small part of the overall experience.

As you move through the game, you'll meet different characters along the way who will give you tips on how to avenge your family, get rich and famous, or dig up buried treasure. Each encounter suggests something else to do, and the whole game is nicely randomized and dynamic enough that it feels like a living, breathing world rather than the collection of code and mini-games that it really is.

Kids will learn some history and Caribbean geography from the experience. Codgers who played the original will enjoy the lush graphical and sound updates. Everyone else should have a good time. Everything is done with a light touch, without gore or brutal violence. There's not too much reliance on heavy-duty strategy, role-playing, or twitch skills, so it's the kind of game that almost anyone can get into. The only problem I've seen thus far is putting down this habit-forming game, because there's always something new to find and do.

Highly recommended. (The game is also available on Windows and XBOX. Personally, I prefer the optimized controls of the little portable version.)

Lego Battles Review

First, what it's not.Lego Battles is not just another Lego shoot-em-up game for the DS.Your six year old will probably hate it, if they aren't willing to learn how to play real-time strategy games. This isn't a game where you run around shooting things. This is a game where you build cities, control soldiers, builders, heroes, etc.Is it fun? absolutely.

This game feels like Warcraft 2 for the DS, which is a compliment. It's a great RTS with Castles, Barracks, Farms, soldiers, kings, workers, etc.It has some of the more "advanced" RTS controls, things like build queues, rally points, etc., which we've come to expect from games like Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander, and others.

I have really enjoyed this game because it fills a void: the missing RTS for the DS.I've looked around, but hadn't found anything good in this genre on the DS.Lego Battles allows you to strategically build cities, plan battles, etc.My only complaint is that some of the early campaigns are very easy.I wish there were a way to increase the difficulty. That said, it's an outstanding game.Highly recommended.

Sid Meier's Pirates! Review

Sid Meier's Pirates
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There's a LOT of game in this box.

There are enough delightful aspects to make it worth a geezer gamer's time and enough light-hearted and simple action to be fun for any kid old enough to enjoy _Treasure Island_.For the hardcore I imagine it's just a romp.

Pirates! is a beautifully-rendered set of minigames stitched together as a story-construction kit packed with yer basic pirate tall-tale elements, plus an extra or two just for fun.

We got the swordfighting part, the ship-jacking part, the town-pillaging part, the pirate-treasure part (complete with fragmentary clues).

We got ripe chaos in the colonies, bad men, good women, and you.

Oh.Did I mention there's dancing?

The action is in sailing, sea battles, sword fights and dancing. The controls in all of them are simple enough that the games are almost instantly immersive, and the acting is never bad, sometimes outstanding, with a lot of rewarding attention to detail.I'll mention the tavern maid after she whacks a lout with a bottle and the exulting Spaniard captain.

The pace is fast enough that you start out busy trying to keep up, the controls simple enough that you can definitely learn how, and about the time you do learn, the depth and detail of the game starts seeping in around the edges.

The Caribbean political and economic situation is constantly changing. Everything about a colony except its existence depends on what comes in or out, by sea.The ships in the game are merchants and smugglers and immigrants and invasion fleets and raiders and garrison troops and couriers. And pirates, of course. You can, ahhh, interfere with this traffic, with consequences.

Another major story element available is getting yourself hooked in to the Caribbean-wide gossip networks of Governor's daughters, tavern maids and mysterious travelers. The latter two will chat with anyone, but the Governors' daughters are choosy about who they'll talk to.Who wants to talk to a pirate that lacks charm?Dance with the ladies, Cap'n.

Dancing, like swordfighting, has a definite rhythm and depends on paying very close attention to your partner. You get better -- there's a basic common repertoire of simple four-step sequences that you soon learn to recognize -- but the variations as you climb the social ladder (did I mention that aspect of the game?) get increasingly complex and the timing and cues subtler and more varied.Swordfighting is child's play compared to the dances women invent.

I've only mentioned some major and minor parts -- sea battles?assaulting cities? (that one's not an action game)?marriage?climbing the social ladder? -- and there are lots of details I won't mention at all.I'll summarize them all this way: they fit.

There's nothing like it.If the minigames themselves were deeper, I suspect you could completely lose yourself in its world. As it stands, it's just a gloriously good game.

I played this on a machine with a (low-end) Radeon X200, a gig of RAM and an Athlon 3500+.I had to crank all the graphics options down to the minimum (although I can run 800x600 rather than 640x480, which matters), set the power-saving CPU speed option to "Always On", and go into the advanced display settings to keep it from forcing e.g. antialiasing. I'm pretty sure the real bottleneck is the graphics card, and that if you've got even the least of the gamer graphics cards you've got nothing to worry about; this one is great up to the low-end 3D stuff but quickly runs out of steam after that.
