Pokemon HeartGold Version Review

Pokemon HeartGold Version
Average Reviews:

I bought both Heart Gold and Soul Silver for my nine-year-old boy.I have lupus with photosensitivity and don't get to spend a lot of time outside with him, and I don't like to just plug him into a video game, so I compromise by playing video games with him. Those games have to be interactive and interesting enough to not drive me crazy. The ds pokemon games take care of both those concerns.

He chose Soul Silver for his game, so this one is mine. It's been years since I looked at the old Gameboy Color games, but this one seems to be just like the old one, except for the enhancements that came along with the double screen and the touch pad.The music includes more recent themes as well, but it makes me happy to hear the older ones.

My son absolutely loves the pokewalker.I love the idea of the pokewalker, but I haven't used mine, yet.We have used his to take his pokemon down to the park to take advantage of the not-too-bright sunlight.

The figurine is cute, but Ho-Oh is not as well-crafted as Lugia.Lugia is magnificent and is rendered consistently with the better graphic capabiiities of later games.Ho-Oh looks like he's straight off the Gameboy Advance. At best.I'm still very happy with the purchase, though.

Pokemon Ranger Review

Pokemon Ranger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pokemon Ranger is another spinoff for the Pokemon Franchise. This might be good for hardcore Pokemon fans but for many gamers, spin offs are usually not a good thing (as we saw with the Mystery Dungeon games) but every now and then they do turn out to be pretty well done (as we saw with Final Fantasy Tactics).Pokemon Ranger falls somewhere in between. The gameplay is certainly interesting, but it feels as though its missing something.

The story involves you becoming a Pokemon Ranger and going up against Team Go-Go.As usual for every Pokemon Game the story is simple, and in many ways very charming. This is something that as a whole I've always admired about Pokemon's kid friendly approach. There's nothing about the story so complex a kid couldn't understand it.It's simple, and that's how the story of a Pokemon game should be.

Pokemon Ranger puts a different spin on Pokemon alright. No big trainer battles, or catching pokemon in the wild (at least by traditional means).Instead, your character, whether you chose male or female, has something called a Styler which is used to capture Pokemon and utilize their abilities. You'll use your stylus in battle to draw circles around the Pokemon in questin. The stronger the pokemon, the longer it'll take for you to capture it.When you do you'll have access to their unique abilities.Once you've used a Pokemon however, that's it.They're released back into the wild.At first this wasn't so bad, but it made the game become repetative.Almost to the point of boredom.

Mostly, though, there are puzzles you'll have to solve by capturing a certain Pokemon and then making him do a certain task. Most puzzles are no challenge at all, and in most cases, the Pokemon is right there for you to capture.A lot of the puzzles are overly simplistic with obvious solutions, however. So don't expect a vast amount of challenge to these puzzles.

What hurts the game the most however is that it's entirely too linear. You just about can't stray off the beaten path at all. There's little or no time to do so in most spots. The game also isn't very long. It'll definitely take you less than 20 hours to complete. Also to the games demise is how long the intro takes. The tutorial is just too long. It'll take a couple of hours just to get through the tutorial alone.

As far as the game looks, it's not up to DS standards at all.Much like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, it looks like a late generation GBA game. It's really colorful, though, but it just doesn't look all that great when stacked up against other DS games out there. The music and sound effects are worse. The music isn't all that great, and the sound effects are all straight from the original Gameboy Pokemon Red and Blue that were released years ago.

Pokemon Ranger isn't bad, it just feels incomplete. The gameplay mechanics are interesting, but they wear thin all too soon.Huge Pokemon fans might love this game, but it could've been so much better.

The Good

+The simple charming storyline that Pokemon has been known for
+Gameplay is very interesting

The Bad

-The story is really linear
-Long LONG Introduction
-The game becomes repetative... fast

Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia Review

Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am currently playing Pokemon Ranger: shadows of almia, and it is so different from the first. The missions which in the first lacked somewhat, are a lot harder. You also have Quests, which are things you are asked to do by villagers. When you first start out in the game you are a student at a Ranger school, where you learn how to play the game. After graduating you are sent to your home in chicole town. But you are a ranger in Veil town, which is nextdoor. So home is always close by. Another new feature is the fact you can have more then one pokemon partner. You get these by doing Quests. When you complete quests you get new stuff for your ranger styler. To get higher rank is alot harder as well, but that makes the game more fun. You have new bad guys in the game, and are very challenging. The fun ascpet of the first game is still there along with the awesome character artowrk and personalities. I highly recomend this game to any poke fan!

Key Game Features

Pokémon Ranger is a unique action-adventure series that features a fun, different way to capture Pokémon with the Nintendo DS stylus, which controls an item called the Capture Styler in the game. Players circle the Pokémon they want to catch by drawing circles around them on the touch screen. When you complete certain Quests, the Ranger Union awards you with power-ups, which add new upgrades and functions to your Capture Styler, allowing you to advance as you work to eventually become a Top Ranger (the most revered Ranger of all).
Now you can partner with a variety of different Pokémon of each type to complete Missions-giving you many options on how to approach different challenges. Every Pokémon is different, and capturing a Pokémon allows you to use its abilities to overcome various obstacles and challenges you will face along the way. The job of a Pokémon Ranger is never done: your duties will include fighting wildfires, rescuing people or even delivering an important package.
Your journey to become a Top Ranger takes you to the new region of Almia. This game has a larger world, more Missions, more adventure and more to do than the previous Pokémon Ranger games. It has a storyline full of adventure and the ability to travel to and explore many exciting new areas in Almia, including oceans, forests, deserts and more with the help of your Partner Pokémon.
This is the first game in the Pokémon Ranger series to feature Pokémon from Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl.
Special Powers, Weapons, Moves & Features
Use the Capture Styler to capture wild Pokémon. Once they are captured, wild Pokémon will follow the player around until their powers are used (either in a Poké Assist or a Field Move).

A Poké Assist is when the player uses an already captured Pokémon to help capture another wild Pokémon.
A Field Move is when the player uses a captured Pokémon's power to clear an obstacle that blocks his way or perform any another helpful function with it.

Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff Review

Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me first say that if you're a newcomer to the Tecmo Bowl franchise, and you're looking for a football experience similar to Madden or NCAA, look elsewhere. This isn't for you.Tecmo Bowl Kickoff is a game that will pull at the heartstrings of gamers like myself--adults who grew up playing the original Tecmo Bowl or Super Tecmo Bowl on the NES or SNES, respectively.

For those gamers, I'm sure this game has been on your radar. So how does it stack up?Let me start off with the bad. This game is not NFL licensed, so forget about playing your favorite teams with all the marquee players. There are 32 teams in two conferences divided across four divisions, and you can customize names and uniform colors, so you can recreate your teams and rename the players to match, but that's a lot of work to do right off the bat.

Next off, and this one was a big no-no for me, you can't track your players' stats. You can't access your individual player's stats to see how many yards they've run, TDs they've thrown, or ANYTHING.The only way you'll see that is if you're in the top 20 in the league's ranking. The best you can do is you can track your overall team's basic numbers in a VERY confusing to read chart.

Finally, some of the menu/displays are just weird or don't even make sense. One instance is that there is no way to figure out if you're five yards or fifty from the goal if you're going for a field goal--it doesn't show--or if it does, it's hidden in a strange, confusing interface.Another example of strangeness is that in the defense leaderboard, it shows the teams with the most yards.WHAT?If you're the top defense, you should be the team who's give up the LEAST yards.

Even with all these negatives, for people like me, Tecmo Bowl is still a ton of fun to play. The zig-zag running technique still works. There are still the same four running and four passing plays. The cheesy cutscenes still flash across the screen. While you're playing this, you'll be brought back to those days after school, when you were firmly planted in front of your TV, cursing the impossible interceptions and smiling as you sack the QB for the tenth time in a game.

It maintains the original look and feel of its predecessors, but it unfortunately does not add anything, and in fact, loses some of what made the original games so much fun.If you enjoyed the original games for the simple gameplay, then you'll really be in heaven, but if you are like me, and loved all the stats, you'll be disappointed.Overall, a good effort, and it gets three stars just for the nostalgia, but fumbles the ball with the loss of the biggest and best features of the original.

My Fashion Studio Review

My Fashion Studio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is different from a lot of the other fashion games out there because rather than just designing the fashions you actually cut the fabric, fold and iron the hems and sew the pieces together.

Like the other reviewer said, there is not a lot of freedom to choose what the different outfits will look like. The game is a series of challenges with a specific garment requested for each (a coat, a blouse, a dress). You can choose from 3 different sleeves, then 3 different collars, etc. and choose the fabric. There are some challenges with men's wear also. The challenges become harder as you progress, and time constraints are added in. All in all, this is a really fun, challenging game if you already own another fashion game.

My child is an aspiring fashion designer and we own every fashion video game made. The best two games I've seen are Imagine fashion for the PC, (the DS version was not as good as the PC version) and also Barbie Fashion show for the PC, which gives you a ton of design options from clothing styles and fabrics to models and footwear, to music and lighting for your fashion show.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team Review

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The truth is, I really wanted to like this game.I really did. It's all because the Pokemon RPGs of the past have been good. The craze for the Red and Blue versions, and then the far superior Gold and Silver versions (arguably the best of the lot). Then Ruby and Sapphire came along. All these RPGs were simple, yet for some reason delightful to play. Now Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue come out, and it seems I had my hopes up for this one. It's no where near as interesting, and it's even sadder that even on the Nintendo DS the game just didn't go above and beyond.

The basic premise of the story is, like every Pokemon game, rather simple. You're an aspiring trainer who one day falls asleep only to wake up as a pokemon. The pokemon you wake up as depends on how you answer the questions at the start of the new game. You'll also be able to choose a pokemon partner who will be the one that awakens you.You and your partner will find yourself in a world completely full of pokemon.Unfortunately all is not safe. You and your ally will soon discover that other pokemon are always in need of help in this new world. So it's up to you to answer ditress calls of other pokemon, go to the specified dungeon and save them. It's basic. It's simple. And throughout your journey you won't see one trainer.Ever.

Since there are no trainers, one has to wonder how to expand upon their party.Well, you still get new pokemon from the wild as you did before, but it's slightly different. When you defeat a wild pokemon they will offer to join your team. Learning moves however is almost exactly the same as previous games.By leveling and through TMs.You can also team up and perform moves as well.

All these things are really engrossing, and they've got some neat things going for it, but it doesn't separate from the things you begin to notice as you trek through the game. The first being that most of the game is just boring. The dungeon floors are randomly generated and sometimes the exit will be right next to the entrance.Although that's not such a bad thing when battling is a fairly uneventful task anyway. The AI of your allies is horrible, yet they can still hold their own in a battle against an enemy.Even bosses are easily taken down by your party.

The worst part may very well be that the true core of the gameplay doesn't come out until you've completed the main story.More abilities become available after. You're finally able to take control of other Pokemon after.Your Pokemon also won't evolve until you complete the main story.

What would a Pokemon game be without two versions? There's the Blue version which is on the Nintendo DS, and then the Red version which is on the GBA.Don't be fooled, however. They're basically the same game.Just like every other set of Pokemon games, though, each version has exclusive pokemon.

The saving grace of this set up, however, is all the connectivity features that can be done.If you insert both games into your DS at a time, you can import Pokemon from one game to another. This is an easy way to get all of them. It's also really neat that you can trade items, missions, and pokemon this way.In addition, if you get KO'd in a dungeon and your party gets wiped out, you could send out a message to your friend and he/she will have to come and rescue you.The connectivity features are very engrossing. And of course, you can hook up via wireless (for DS owners) or link cable (GBA owners) and battle with your friends.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon doesn't really look all that great. It's no surprise, Pokemon games never look fantastic graphically. If you want to know the truth, the DS version looks exactly like the GBA version. There's hardly any difference between them. The game is certainly colorful, but there's just not enough variety in the environments and there are hardly any 3D effects brought out.For the Nintendo DS, which has to compete with far better looking games it's really hard for it to hold it's own here.

Worse than the graphics is the sound, though.A lot of the sound effects and such come directly from the normal gameboy games that are almost ten years old.The music itself isn't so bad, but it is quite repetitive.Again, however, it's no surprise because as usual, Pokemon games don't usually push a system to its limits.

It's hard to suggest Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. It's a Pokemon game, but it's a rather bland Pokemon game. It's neat that you can finally play as a Pokemon, but the game as a whole could've been presented far better than it actually was. There's little variety to it, actually, which is really sad considering how big and expansive previous Pokemon games are. It's got plenty of rescue missions, but after a while they're much more repetitive than exciting.I can't suggest one buy this.Even the most die hard of Pokemon fans will have trouble getting into this game.

On the positive side
+You actually play as the Pokemon and not the trainer
+There's plenty of connectivity stuff to be done between both versions, mastering the game as a whole will take a really long time
+There's never an end to rescue missions, even long after you've completed the story mode

On the negative side
-Battles are too easy
-The AI for your enemies and allies are bad, yet the game is still easy, and your AI controlled characters are still competent enough to get through the battle without you
-Most of the more interesting tweaks of the game are available only AFTER story mode is complete
-Graphically the game doesn't hold up
-The sound effects are absolutely terrible

Jewel Master: Egypt Review

I loved Cradle of Rome, and this game is a fantastic sequel!Egypt is identical in format. You get to build your own civilization by earning gold and resources through game play - match at least three symbols to clear the blue tiles from the board. The symbols are new, vibrant and beautiful, and for a little extra fun when you've finished clearing tiles, you get a lapis lazuli scarab beetle which has to be dropped off the board before your water pitcher timer runs empty!

The tile swapping movement is smooth as silk in this game, I noticed it immediately.New symbols fall in fast like silky lightning. This game is very nicely done, and is already a must play for me all the way through to the end. It's highly addictive and gorgeous.....if you love Jewel Quest or other gem swapping puzzle games, this one is outstanding!
