Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier Review

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier

This is one of those games that, despite it's flaws, is worth playing for what it is. And it's a halfway decent JRPG with a somewhat interesting fight mechanic and awesome character design... which is basically Trigun-meets-Mobile-Suit-Gundam-meets-Girls-on-Trampolines.

The humor and overall vibe of the game is something that is distinctly Japanese, and the developer didn't change a thing. So the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense, everything is over-the-top, the dialogue is in Japanese, and yes - the heroines of the game have bouncy Anime boobs. But it was meant to be more funny than anything and blessedly - the game never takes itself too seriously.

I've never played any of the other titles in the series, and I bought this b/c I was looking for a new DS game and the trailer looked fun. And the game is fun. Atlus delivers a unique experience that is certainly worth your time and money.

The gameplay is simple and the battles are fun. The sprite actions and animations are nifty, silly and often times full of boobs. The only downside is that they are repetitive...but then again - it's an RPG, so...uh...yeah.

If you've seen the trailer for this, and thought to yourself "Hmmm...that actually looks like it might be worth playing." I can tell you that it is.

Is it going to blow your mind because it's the best game ever?

Nah. But the point is - it doesn't need to. It just needs to be fun. And it is.

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier is set across a variety of worlds, ranging from an apocalyptic wasteland covered with the hulks of downed spaceships to a fantastical place of fairy tales and dark magic. Join Haken Browning: gunslinger, professional bounty hunter, and amateur ladies' man, along with his motley crew of robots, were-beasts, secret agents, and busty princesses as they delve deep into the mysteries of how their worlds came to be and face a threat that imperils the multiverse.

Battle
While engaged in combat in Endless Frontier players utilize everycharacter available, but only four characters will be acting as front-linefighters. Use the formation option to rearrange your party, where charactersin the front will be the ones getting up-close and personal with enemies, and characters in the back will be available to provide support for attacks.During a battle each character will make use of HP, SP and COM. HP isthe character's health. When it is down to zero the character is knockedout and can't be used in battle until revived. If all four charactersin front are knocked out, you've lost the battle and the game is over.SP is used for skills and spirit commands. These provide a variety ofuseful effects like healing or special attacks that deal status effectsto enemies. COM is what allows you to perform attacks each turn. Eachattack a character makes has an associated COM cost. More damaging attacksrequire more COM and if a character doesn't have enough COM to continueher/his attack sequence, the turn ends. Each character regains some COMevery turn, and some items or spirit commands will refresh a character'sCOM as well.

Hit Count and Combos
Every time you strike an enemy, that enemy will be lifted off the groundslightly. As long as the enemy is in the air each successive hit willadd to the hit count. The higher the hit count, the more damage you'lldo in a series of attacks. In addition, your chance of getting criticalhits increases in direct proportion to the current length of the combo.Critical hits deal a lot of damage. To keep your hit count high, use carefultiming to chain your characters' attacks together into an unstoppabletidal wave of pain. These tricks will keep you fighting at the top ofyour game.

Chain Attacks
While one of your characters is attacking, if the next characters to attackis another one of your characters, you can begin the second character'sturn before the first has completely finished his attacks. This mightseem wasteful, but it lets the second character jump right into combatand begin attacking while the enemy is still being juggled from the attacksof the first character, further increasing the hit count and dealing moredamage through critical hits. You'll also get a boost to the frontiergauge, making it even easier to use overdrive attack more often.

Support Attacks
Characters in the back row can still help you out, even if they're not part of the fighting force. Call upon those members of the party to use support attacks, during which they will quickly jump into battle, deal a few hits, then leap away again. This takes place while your party members are attacking, so you can continue attacking on your own. Let the assisting characters attack, or use this opportunity to chain in more characters to extend the combo even further.

Key Features

Fighting style combat - Combo attack your enemies and never let them hit the ground to deal the most damage. This unique "juggling" gameplay and timing-based attacks keep every encounter fresh and exciting, unlike most RPGs.
Story intended for mature RPG gamers - Intended for the more seasoned, older gamers, the story includes more nuanced, complex characters and manages to mix drama, romance, and humor to great effect..

Fighting Fantasy Review

Fighting Fantasy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First thing I'd like to point out is that this game is very remniscent of the first couple elder scrolls games and that is right but essentially this game is smaller in scale. FF:TWoFTM is a dungeon crawler very similar to Elder Scrolls that is based off of the first installment of the book series of fighting Fantasy. In the book, you are a lone adventurer who travels to a mountain with red glowing vegetation on top called Firetop mountain. The mountain was once a Dwarven city but was taken over by a powerful Warlock named Zagor and his many Orc minions. It is said that Zagor has a treasure chest that may only open if you find it's two keys which are spread out very deep in the keep.

In the game, the goal is the same but the story is not nearly as deep as the book itself. You are an adventurer who takes a boat to the port village near Firetop Mountain and from their the quest begins. This game is beautifully detailed for a DS game, perhaps even better detailed than the actual first couple of Elder Scrolls games which many compare this to. This is not one of those games were the developers cheap out and make the environments look the same. The detail in this game is amazing as well with bloodstains on walls, papers littering the floor, pictures on walls, chairs, beds, etc. Everything makes the game feel like you are actually going through a dungeon or underground city rather than an endless maze with nothing interesting like Deep Labyrinth or Moon. The game is also very difficult and changes the enemies as you get stronger I.E. when you backtrack, you are going to see monsters on par with your level rather than really weak monsters that were hard when you originally passed through the area. The game also randomly generates mobs and auto-saves for you when you go through a door so I you don't like the mob you got, you can just respawn, etc. Often, the monsters will seem a step ahead of you and you may feel like you skipped a level when in truth, you are on the right track but you need to reequip or level up.

The game uses a strange control scheme that is basically a two-in-one. You use the bumpers to attack, the d-pad to move, and either the stylus or the face buttons to look. If you'd rather use the face buttons, you get access to the right bumper which does a different attack then the left one but playing this way makes casting spells, hotkey pressing, or healing, or just plain talking and opening doors(all of which uses the touch screen) very difficult. That is why I use the stylus. In this respect, the game resembles Metroid Prime Hunters.

One bad thing people might find is that the monsters and you yourself are sprites. That is true, but it doesn't detract from th game. The sprites are very well detailed and you hardly notice after a while. The sprites are sort of remniscent of Doom enemies. But regardless, this is one good game in terms of adventure and atmosphere because the game is dark and creepy in places and it's really fun to explore in tis game. Also, I'd like to point out the absence of music. The game has no music whatsoever except for the title theme. There is ambience though, but some of it can become annoying. It is also a short game but then again, with the amount of detail in this game, I can understand why the game is so short. I mean, they really went out of their way to make this game detailed because if everything was the same, this game would fail miserably in the hands of reviewers. Even with the detail, the game is failing miserably with reviewers, but then again, reviewers are usually wrong about things so don't listen.
P.S. I'm not sure if this is for preorders or not but you get a free Fighting Fantasy book bundled with the game. Gamestop gave me mine when I bought it and I originally thought that was only if you preorder so either they screwed up or you get it with the game.

Glory of Heracles Review

Glory of Heracles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Nintendo DS continues its impressive run of portable RPG/Strategy games with this gem!Glory of Heracles takes a lot of good traditional elements and combines it with a clever magic (mini-game) system and adds a bit of Greek Mythology in for good measure.

The game, like many DS RPGs out there these days, begins with a pretty standard (some what contrived) storyline. You're a hero, you wake up with your memory all but erased, and over time you work to recover your memory (and do some other big things like save the world) along the way.Sounds familiar? The story here won't blow you away but it will keep you interested enough with a few twists and turns, and again if you're a Greek myth fan, you'll be happy either way.

As for the mechanics, the battle system is what you would expect. You can choose attack commands, magic spells, special skills, etc.One plus is that unlike some other RPGs, here you can augment your magic power by selecting an optional mini game after you cast your spell. The mini game gives you the opportunity to jack up your magic attack power ... but with the risk of failing as well. It's a nice little compliment to a traditional formula.I also like how you can do 'overkills' by attacking a downed foe and using the residual ether to replace a little MP that you need. It's a nice additional bit of strategy which is always welcome for a long game like this.

Battles tend to go pretty fast and the encounters within the dungeons and in the overworld are all random-based.The happen pretty frequently, but the fun battle system keeps the monotony down.Having the ability to collect items and forge your own weapons also adds to the fun.

Otherwise, the sounds and graphics are all reasonably done. The stylus plays a big role in this game. The music is decent and overall it's a solid product for any RPG fan out there.I would have given it 5 stars if not for a few places that were rough around the edges (grx could be a little cleaner, story could be a bit less trite, etc.) but overall if you're a fan of the genre, this game should suit you fine.

Product Description:
Embark on an Epic Quest to Ancient Greece
Not everything plays out exactly as the legends say. Great cities still wage war, mythological monsters haunt the land and the gods of Olympus fight while heroes and men suffer difficult lives, but in the midst of this chaos, a young boy washes up on the shores of Crete, devoid of memories and divinely blessed with immortality. Who granted him this gift, and to what end? Will his quest to regain his memories shed light and hope on the gods or ignite a new war that destroys all?

Take Command of the Greek Squad
Glory of Heracles features many familiar references to Ancient Greek characters and locations with a rich storyline inspired by Greek Mythology without explicitly recreating events. The story begins when a boy washes up on the island of Crete. He doesn't remember how he got there or even who he is. In this unique adventure, he soon meets companions with equally murky backgrounds and finds out he's immortal...just like his new friends. Glory of Heracles also features a deep, role-playing battle system and magic that can be powered up through the use of touch screen challenges. Players can visit well-known locations like Sparta, Athens and even the legendary Mount Olympus.

Features:

Inspired by Greek mythology, Glory of Heracles delivers a unique take on the characters, events and monsters of legend. Travel from Crete to Athens and all the way to the halls of Mount Olympus, facing off against Minotaurs, Harpies and the unstoppable Hydra as you try to earn your place among the immortals of ancient Greece.
Guide your party of heroes through turn-based battles, unleashing the powers and magical abilities of the gods against the monsters of Greek mythology. Touch screen challenges give add to the action, giving you the chance to power up your magical attacks.
In-game tutorials and intuitive stylus-based controls make Glory of Heracles easy to learn for beginning RPG players but difficult to master. In addition, during battle, the game will offer advice on battle strategies that both RPG newcomers and advanced players will find helpful. Heracles also offers tremendous depth for experienced RPG fans, featuring alternate control schemes, programmable party member AI sets and a multitude of unique character skills, abilities and magic.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team Review

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The truth is, I really wanted to like this game.I really did. It's all because the Pokemon RPGs of the past have been good. The craze for the Red and Blue versions, and then the far superior Gold and Silver versions (arguably the best of the lot). Then Ruby and Sapphire came along. All these RPGs were simple, yet for some reason delightful to play. Now Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue come out, and it seems I had my hopes up for this one. It's no where near as interesting, and it's even sadder that even on the Nintendo DS the game just didn't go above and beyond.

The basic premise of the story is, like every Pokemon game, rather simple. You're an aspiring trainer who one day falls asleep only to wake up as a pokemon. The pokemon you wake up as depends on how you answer the questions at the start of the new game. You'll also be able to choose a pokemon partner who will be the one that awakens you.You and your partner will find yourself in a world completely full of pokemon.Unfortunately all is not safe. You and your ally will soon discover that other pokemon are always in need of help in this new world. So it's up to you to answer ditress calls of other pokemon, go to the specified dungeon and save them. It's basic. It's simple. And throughout your journey you won't see one trainer.Ever.

Since there are no trainers, one has to wonder how to expand upon their party.Well, you still get new pokemon from the wild as you did before, but it's slightly different. When you defeat a wild pokemon they will offer to join your team. Learning moves however is almost exactly the same as previous games.By leveling and through TMs.You can also team up and perform moves as well.

All these things are really engrossing, and they've got some neat things going for it, but it doesn't separate from the things you begin to notice as you trek through the game. The first being that most of the game is just boring. The dungeon floors are randomly generated and sometimes the exit will be right next to the entrance.Although that's not such a bad thing when battling is a fairly uneventful task anyway. The AI of your allies is horrible, yet they can still hold their own in a battle against an enemy.Even bosses are easily taken down by your party.

The worst part may very well be that the true core of the gameplay doesn't come out until you've completed the main story.More abilities become available after. You're finally able to take control of other Pokemon after.Your Pokemon also won't evolve until you complete the main story.

What would a Pokemon game be without two versions? There's the Blue version which is on the Nintendo DS, and then the Red version which is on the GBA.Don't be fooled, however. They're basically the same game.Just like every other set of Pokemon games, though, each version has exclusive pokemon.

The saving grace of this set up, however, is all the connectivity features that can be done.If you insert both games into your DS at a time, you can import Pokemon from one game to another. This is an easy way to get all of them. It's also really neat that you can trade items, missions, and pokemon this way.In addition, if you get KO'd in a dungeon and your party gets wiped out, you could send out a message to your friend and he/she will have to come and rescue you.The connectivity features are very engrossing. And of course, you can hook up via wireless (for DS owners) or link cable (GBA owners) and battle with your friends.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon doesn't really look all that great. It's no surprise, Pokemon games never look fantastic graphically. If you want to know the truth, the DS version looks exactly like the GBA version. There's hardly any difference between them. The game is certainly colorful, but there's just not enough variety in the environments and there are hardly any 3D effects brought out.For the Nintendo DS, which has to compete with far better looking games it's really hard for it to hold it's own here.

Worse than the graphics is the sound, though.A lot of the sound effects and such come directly from the normal gameboy games that are almost ten years old.The music itself isn't so bad, but it is quite repetitive.Again, however, it's no surprise because as usual, Pokemon games don't usually push a system to its limits.

It's hard to suggest Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. It's a Pokemon game, but it's a rather bland Pokemon game. It's neat that you can finally play as a Pokemon, but the game as a whole could've been presented far better than it actually was. There's little variety to it, actually, which is really sad considering how big and expansive previous Pokemon games are. It's got plenty of rescue missions, but after a while they're much more repetitive than exciting.I can't suggest one buy this.Even the most die hard of Pokemon fans will have trouble getting into this game.

On the positive side
+You actually play as the Pokemon and not the trainer
+There's plenty of connectivity stuff to be done between both versions, mastering the game as a whole will take a really long time
+There's never an end to rescue missions, even long after you've completed the story mode

On the negative side
-Battles are too easy
-The AI for your enemies and allies are bad, yet the game is still easy, and your AI controlled characters are still competent enough to get through the battle without you
-Most of the more interesting tweaks of the game are available only AFTER story mode is complete
-Graphically the game doesn't hold up
-The sound effects are absolutely terrible
