I just finished both games, and I highly recommend this bundle set to anyone who likes (1) RPG games, (2) Post-apocalyptic themed anythings, (3) games that don't make you do anything or (4) science fiction in general.The basic premise of both games, as recounted by numerous previous reviews, is that you have to make it in a world defined by the typical nuclear fallout (ahem) disaster.However, there are so many ways to make it, and they're all such fun, that these games should appeal to most people.Fallout 1 is a shorter game but in many ways is more elegant; if you play it conscientiously you'll have a feeling of satisfaction at the end for having seen and done most of it.Fallout 2 is much larger in scope and in time commitment, and unfortunately suffers a bit from it.. there are more bugs, more 'dead' items and quests that were intended to have some purpose in the game but never did, and so on.Some could argue this, in fact, merely adds to the gritty reality of a game where everything doesn't end up in a neat little package at the end, and there aren't answers to all the questions.Or maybe the programming staff was just overworked.In any event, the games are addictive and reward curiosity.High points:
1)Emphasis on character development.A karma counter keeps track of your overall good/badness, and as you progress you are offered various 'Perks' that enhance or define your character, such as Salesman or Demolition Expert or Kama Sutra Master.Others you earn through gameplay itself.Multiple avenues of play exist for any type of character..while your first character in both games is probably going to emphasize gunplay and high Agility, later on you can try a diplomatic or manipulative or pure thieving character as you see fit, and play what amounts to an almost completely different game.
2)So many explosions.These games have lots of fighting, on a turn-based system allowing for micromanagement of both yourself and your 'friendly' NPCs.Use burst fire to take out packs of charging wolves, aim your scoped hunting rifle at someone's leg to keep them from chasing you, send a rocket down a corridor into a pack of unsuspecting guards.It's all there..and the death animations are not for the faint of heart.
A few negatives:
1)As is typical in RPGs, making 'bad' or 'evil' decisions or dialogue choices tends to screw you.If you want, just pretend your evil character secretly enjoys the hypocrisy of agreeing to rescue someone's orphaned kitten with a boo-boo on its paw; it would be nice someday if RPGs rewarded evil characters for doing evil things.
2)Armor.Basically the goal of both games is to get your first suit of Power Armor.This transforms both games from a grueling, constantly-reloading ordeal of random accidental deaths and burst-fire horrors to a breeze.This, of course, makes perfect sense...once you're a walking tank, most things bounce off.However (although Fallout 2 handles this a bit better) there is very little middle ground..even with Combat Armor II (the next step down) you get mauled a lot.
3)Uncontrolled NPCs.Sure, by definition you shouldn't be able to control an NPC, but it can get truly annoying when one of your NPCs blasts something, and then moves 1 space directly in front of your other NPC for no reason, and then that second NPC, naturally, fires a machine gun directly into his head.It makes you wonder if 'friendly fire accidents' are really accidents.Depending on your party size, you can spend a lot of time watching your allies gun each other down like post apocalyptic three stooges.
Those aside, the games are very detailed and can be played as quickly or as slowly as one wishes, with numerous subplots branching off the main plot.The first game does have a timer for the completion of the main task, but that can be extended during the game, and in fact the game goes on (sans timer) once that task is completed.Fallout 2 does away with that completely, allowing you effectively all the time you want to explore.So if you always wondered if how Mad Max would have done if he'd had more ammo for his shotgun and access to the occasional flamethrower, pick them up.

Parents should be aware that the games contain violence and some sexual situations. Though you can adjust the tone down a bit through the main control panel, developments that occur on the adult setting are integral to the story.

Nocturne is one of the most interesting (both plot and gameplay-wise) RPGs I have ever played.Having borrowed a successful monster collecting formula from Pokemon, and a plot line out of a horror movie, this game definitely monopolized my attention over some other recent RPGs.

Nocturne introduces the players into a strange post-apocalypse world where the hero becomes a demon after the rest of the world is destroyed.There are no princesses to save here, nor are you some do-gooder so typical of other RPGs.Basically you are trying to survive in a world full of demons, and you get to choose your own destiny.Most of the choices are pretty dark though.

Gameplay-wise Nocturne is a lot like Pokemon, but taken to the next level.The hero starts off alone and must recruit other demons as allies.The hero's party can either talk/bribe/kidnap demons to join, or to use a system called "fusion" which allows the player to fuse two or three demons together so to create a brand new demon.There are around 180 demons total in this game, seperated into multiple classes and levels.There are also around 100 (very rough guess) different attacks/skills here shared by these demons.When you fuse demons, you can randomly combine different skills of the parent demons.Of course, the gimmick here is that you can only keep up to 8 demons, and for each demon you can keep only 8 different attacks/spells.

Understanding of different attacks and spells make up bulk of the strategy here.Attacks are divided into phyical, fire/ice/lighting/wind elemental, curse/mind, and light/dark magical types.In addition you have stat buffing/debuffing spells.Since most of the enemies you fight against will have certain weaknesses, finding a weakness will not only allow the player to do more damage, but it will also allows the player to attack an extra turn.This mechanism means that even if the player's demons are leveled up high, the player can still easily lose to low level demons if the demon lineups are wrong.Having said this, it's very difficult to beat this game without dying many times, since you wouldn't know what to expect from most demons/bosses the first time.

Graphic-wise this game is Cell-shaded (reminds me of the game Breath of Fire V dragon quarters), and very stylish in terms of character designs.The overhead world is a bit blend though.Unlikely Final Fantasy you wont see 2 mintue summons or outlandish spells when you fight enemies and the attacks are mostly unspectular.Nothing too good or bad in this department.

The music for this game is very good if you can stand heavy metal/industrial.I actually like most of the pieces alot.The sound is fairly crisp.When you destroy some enemies they will moan, while others just simply disappear.Nothing too impressive here either.

My biggest complaint about this game is the naming convention used in this game.The monsters' names are mostly confusing and there are no numbers IDs assigned to each monster.This makes fusing a bit confusing/difficult for beginners.It's not too bad though if you get used to it.

Last but not the least, this game is definitely not for kids.The demons in this game do not only swear and use the F-word on a regular basis, this game also has many occult references which will certainly offend most religious fanatics.The Demons include Christian Biblical figures, far east deities, and various mythological creatures.This game's story line features alot of philosophical mumbo jumbo which will be difficult to understand to some, and possibly to be considered satanic to those who do understand.

This game will take a while to finish.Probably 50-60 hours the first time through, and alot more if you are planning to collect all of the demons in the game.Overall I recommend this to any RPG fan who are not too religious or easily offended.

This review is solely on the extra items included in the Fallout 3 Collector's Edition.

In addition to the Fallout 3 game, this box set includes the following:

(1) The Art of Fallout 3: Conceptual Imagery, Volumes iii-xiii
(2) Vault-Tec Lunchbox
(3) Vault-Tec Bobblehead
(4) VDSG Holotape: Making of Fallout 3, Historical Series (Volume I)

Let's go into each of these items in more detail.

The Art of Fallout 3 - This is a 95-page hardcover booklet with conceptual drawings and artwork that cover several aspects of the game, with artist's notes included.

Pages 4-12: Pre-Production - Includes sketches of cities such as D.C., Rivet City, Project Purity, Wasteland, and Paradise Falls.
Pages 14-16: Pip-Boy - This section shows several concept sketches of the Pip-Boy device.
Pages 17-32: Costume Design - Here we see designs for wastelanders, raiders, slavers, merchants, Vault suits, and more - see how 50's brand clothing gets a post-holocaust treatment.
Pages 33-44: Creatures - Brahmin cows? Bloat flies? Deathclaws? They're all here, in their irradiated glory.
Pages 45-52: Robots - From the Protectron to Liberty Prime, every robot and their arsenal make an appearance.
Pages 53-60: Weapons - This section shows the more exotic and homemade weaponry of Fallout 3 with intricate detail.

The Vault-Tec Lunchbox - There's no shortage of artwork here. The top has the Vault-Tec mascot leading an exodus into a mountainside vault, the sides have S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attribute pictures, and the bottom shows an idyllic family picnic with the mascot reminding everyone to "Prepare for the Future".

The Vault-Tec Bobblehead - I must confess; I was a little disappointed at first. While the bobblehead was cute, the base had come off during delivery, but it was nothing a little super-glue couldn't fix.

Finally, the Making of Fallout 3 video.

The main video is 39 minutes long, made up of 4 sections:

There's a lot to love with this edition. If you like the game and want to know as much as you can about the creation, development and production process, you'll be in hog heaven with the Making of Fallout 3 DVD. For the aspiring artist, the Art of Fallout 3 is simply amazing to look at and offers a unique glimpse into the process of taking retro-50's concepts and projecting them 200 years into the future. The other extras are purely for the collectors - but if you'd like to be the envy of your classmates with a Vault-Tec lunchbox, or decorate your cubicle with a Vault-Tec bobblehead, go for it!

Now, the only difference between this edition and the Fallout 3: Amazon.com Exclusive Survival Edition is the Pip-Boy clock. I would NOT recommend buying that package because there are numerous reports of the Pip-Boy clock malfunctioning. I personally haven't had any trouble, but several people have noted the low battery life.

The Fallout games have still not been replaced after ten years of RPGs. The extreme, even libertine freedom that defines the series has not since been captured in a videogame. One can literally go anywhere, fight with anything, and kill anyone within the setting of the game.

The original Fallout and Fallout are turn-based, top-down perspective role-playing games. Though they feel dated in some reguards (graphics, minimal voice-overs, dated AI), they still exhibit gameplay superior to more recent role-playing videogames (libertine freedom, moral choices, engaging dialogue, and a "sandbox" feel).

Fallout's "sandbox" feel is one of its greatest strengths. While most games will force the player to adhere to a certain rigid path, or force him/her to stay in one area until he/she advances in level, Fallout disreguards these limiters. Players can venture into the most dangerous and hostile areas as soon as they begin the game. In Fallout 2, for example, one can beat the game in under an hour if their character was properly oriented (and if they were so inclined).

Fortunatly, the massive worlds and the many ways to play the games will keep players holding their ultimate victory and exploring more of the game. The first two Fallout games have not yet been replaced. The freedoms granted in the Fallout games are comparable to Morrowind or Oblivion, but The Elder Scrolls games lack the complex dialogues and social engineering of the Fallout games. The worlds and the style of play are comparable to the Baldur's gate series, but Fallout has so much greater a sense of freedom than any Dungeons and Dragons videogame ever released. Fallout and Fallout two have not yet been replaced, and I doubt they ever will be.

Fallout Tactics is a tactical strategy game, and it fails to retain the strengths of the other games in the series. As a strategy game, the in-depth dialogue interactions and moral choices simply do not exist. Likewise, the immense feeling of freedom that defines the earlier Fallout games is non-existent in FO:Tactics, as the game progresses on a linear mission-to-mission basis.

Unlike the previous Fallout games, in Tactics the player -directly- controls a squad of up to six soldiers. The combat is either fought in the traditional, turn based Gurps system of the previous games, or in a newer pseudo-real-time mode. In the new system, "action points" recharge over time instead of after ending one's turn. While an interesting twist, controlling one's entire squad is far easier, and in the author's opinion, more fun in traditional turn-based combat.

Veterans will be pleased to know that the main changes to the game's ruleset are simply re-orienting combat towards real-time. All skills from the previous games remain, as well as most traits and perks. Nostalgia aside, the game is boring for the audience of the original games. While the setting and "ruleset", if you will, stay the same, the focus shifts from a "sandbox" to a monotonous "shoot-shoot-shoot" game. Tactics is only for hardcore fans of post-apocalyptic fiction, and only after they are bored of Fallout 1 and 2. There are much better games in the tactical strategy genre (see Jagged Alliance or X-Com).

This release/printing/issue of the Fallout series is very well executed. While the box art is mediocre at best, the single DVD contains Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics; a set that previously would have appeared on 5, that's f-i-v-e compact disks. The extras are wonderful. While I was at first, dissapointed to see a lack of a manual, I then realized that the DVD contains the wonderfully designed and written manuals of all three games in PDF format. The manuals contain some great background story, and even recipies! (see Fallout 2's appendix 8 for "Carrion Kabobs") The extras on the disk are rather nice, but nothing amazing. The concept art is entertaining, but nothing too insightful.I am extremely happy with my recent purchase of the Fallout Collection on DVD. I highly reccomend that any fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, role-playing videogames, "retro" gaming, and to any fan of the Fallout series should pick up this editition.

PS: This game is rated M! The current display of "T" is a mistake! Finally, this game is on a DVD, as the description states. Not a CD.

I never played the original fallout games, but I have always been an elder scrolls fan.Oblivion is one of my favorite games that I have ever had the pleasure of playing, news that the same team bought up and was working on this game made me very happy, if it could just be oblivion with guns, I would be sure to find much enjoyment.However it is SO much more.The game is epic in scope, when you are "born" you crawl around, and you find this book (which is very cool) that teaches you about the S.P.E.C.I.A.L System, and you get to choose how you will be.I love the whole way this game is presented, everything seems very realistic, the environments are of the best I have ever seen.

The voice acting has to be heard to be enjoyed.I finally beat this sucker, after many late night gaming sessions (who needs sleep?)its crazy how many times I would say, ok, a few more minutes then its time to sleep, and the next thing I know the suns coming up!

One of the cool things about this game is the Pip-Boy 3000, it is how you manage everything, stuff you pick up, your aid, your ability to check your radiation level, as well as letting you check your maps, choose your quest, and the coolest feature of all, the ability to listen to the in game radio.

The radio features music from the 40's and 50's and its all real music, very unique, and fits perfectly into the world this game has created.I love it.It adds so much to the experience.

Since your reading this review, you may wish to know about the "Collectors" features.So lets get into if its worth you dropping another 20$ for.

There is no definitive Yes or No.If you work in the game industry, this is one of the best things you can buy, you get a 100 page art book that looks really good, you get the concept art for the creatures, character armor, and environment landscapes.This book makes others such as gears of war seem quite inadequate, this book alone was worth the price for me.The very cool looking lunchbox which houses everything only sweetens the deal, it is very well constructed, and looks awesome, that's all i can say.If you enjoy the retro type advertising of the game (and in game) you will love the lunch box, it is very cool.You get a making of dvd, which I'm planning on exploring later on after I beat the game again. You also get the bobble head which is currently "bobbling" right now as I type.I love this guy, he looks awesome, I'm somewhat disappointed we didn't get the version with him giving a thumbs up, but this is still cool nonetheless.

This is a very good game, much more mature than oblivion due to the language and themes (one part has you visiting a virtual world, where you break up a marriage, beat up a little kid to make him cry, then proceed with murdering all the inhabits while wearing a mask scaring them all away -- though you can avoid it, if you figure out how to get out on your own!)

Speaking of which, I must mention the cool perks system.If you want to play the game as being evil (my next play through for sure!) you can use the "Sandman" Perk and kill people in their sleep, if that's not enough, there is a perk that lets you eat people!Also whenever you pick pocket you can replace what you stole with a grenade and watch as they die (you get an achievement for this too!)

The game is so good, so slick, I really hope they treat this game like oblivion and offer some expansions, maybe one taking place in NY, LA, or something, that would be very cool.

The new VATS system is pretty cool, you can use Attack Points and use your weapon in a cinematic view that lays waste to your enemy, weather your slamming a sledgehammer down on a demon dog, or shooting off a raiders head with your hand gun or rifle (think resident evil type animations), with that said, this game had me jumping several times throughout, it is very good and you get very involved in this game.

Lastly, I must mention the graphics are the best I have seen.They surpass Oblivion, and look better than any game out on the 360 right now.

Bottom line, pick it up, you will be playing this more than 1-2 days, it is a very good game, a game that requires repeat visits.It combines the best of all my favorite games, GTA's seedy underground environment, Resident Evils Character design, boss strength, and the gun play and horror, oblivions fantastic engine and how everything goes together.It has to be played to truly enjoy.

Also, the guide is NOT necessary, the game is pretty easy to figure out on your own.(though not an easy game)

I'll preface this by cribbing lightly from early professional reviews.Yes, the game borrows concepts from GoW.Yes, there are aspects reminiscent of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.Toss in Devil May Cry and Portal while you're at it too.

Does the game suffer from this?Absolutely not.

I believe Darksiders will prove out to stand on its own merits:

Art/color/effects.The Darksiders world is painted vividly.Bloody, scarlet reds.Vivid, electric blues.Hellfire crackles and belches with palpable heat.Death effects are varying and plentiful.The Chaoseater rips through opponents with satisfying degrees of violence and gore.Joe Mad's character designs are top-notch, fresh, and lend strongly to the 'playing a comic book' feel.You'll like it or you won't - but I love it.The angel and demon designs, the shattered, demonically-warped landscape, the weaponry, War's armor - it's just awesome.

Voice acting.Mark Hamill is worth the price of admission.The other voice talents do an able job, but his role really stands out, and he does an impeccable job.

Combat.Button-mashers will find a lot to like.Newcomers will quickly feel at home with the combat setup.Experts won't feel like they're jogging around a dumbed-down rail-fighter.Combos are expressive and fun to achieve, and their resulting effects are satisfyingly brutal.

Story.I won't detail the twists and turns the story takes, but the fact that you're War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, sent back to Earth to figure out who screwed you over, and why, and kill everything standing in the way of that - it doesn't need to be any more cerebral.Revenge and justice are always a solid theme to an action slasher, and the story here doesn't fail.

The soul-currency system is a nice touch.There are many, many items in the destructive environment that will kick out souls that can be traded in as currency for new combat moves, weapon enhancements, health/rage buffs, etc.Some of these items raise an eyebrow (souls confined in a parking meter?ok.), but the gathering process is still fun.

Early boss fights are decent, but these battles really shine with selected increased difficulty.

The puzzles aren't terribly difficult.You're not going to employ any Half-Life 2-type problem-solving to figure them out, but they factor into the overall gameplay logically and seamlessly.

Some players might get hung up in the comparisons to other games in the genre.Others might see similarities or common themes as strengths - building on what gamers like, discarding other elements.My advice - enjoy Darksiders based on what you see, what you hear, and what you beat the holy (and unholy) crap out of in-game.Anticipate at least 17-20 solid hours of gameplay, with plenty to discover on subsequent playthroughs.

Start to finish, this game was a 9/10, and earned a spot on the shelf next to Halo 1-3, Fallout 3, CoD4, and Bioshock.

Gameplay
A mix of exploration and fast-paced action gameplay, Darksidersis based on nonlinear play situations. That means that as War slowly regainshis previous powers of destruction and carnage in order to continue hissearch for the origins and reasons for his betrayal, players will be ableto backtrack to areas and scenarios that they may have left unexploredupon first discovery. Almost all areas of the game can be explored andsome of the things players will find as they do so are treasure chests,health chests, and bonus life points, etc. The ability to go back andexplore areas is important, especially as the game progresses and Warfinds himself up against enemies whose defeat require special skills and/orweaponry.

As for combat gameplay, Darksiders features a variety of weapons--including blades and firearms--that can be used in combo moves or in single strikes. Some of these can be charged up for quick, but devastating attacks on enemies and all can be arranged on your controller's D-pad for easy and preferred access. Additional gameplay elements include the ability/necessity to fight from the back of your mount, Ruin, and the collection of the souls in the form of glowing orbs that fall to the ground as enemies are dispatched. The latter can be used to level up War with new items and abilities.

Varied Characters and Environments
Although players take on the imposing role or War, Darksiders alsocontains a wide variety of equally intriguing and sometimes frighteningcharacters. Fallout 3 only appears to use the disc validation aspects of SecuROM 7.36.0006. I used System Mechanic to perform some "before and after" system scans to ensure nothing sinister was happening with the install. All I could find was the usual license and CD / DVD entries in the Registry. There were no activations or installation hiccups. The installation does take quite some time though, so I advise people to de-clutter and defrag before they install.

I don't want to issue any spoilers, but what I will say is that the graphics are revolutionary! The world feels very immersing and the character interactions are very realistic. The controls are very similar to Oblivion too, so it wasn't hard to dive in. The game is very, very polished and when you exit Vault 101 for the first time, the scenery that greets you is astounding! You can see objects in full clarity right out to the horizon and the environment looks very much like a post-apocalyptic wasteland, albeit under a very gray palette. I maxed out the in-game detail settings and my single slot GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB handled it perfectly. This is first class!

My biggest gripe with DRM is limited activations, which also infer spying on your machine. This game does indeed use the "evil" SecuROM, but it's just the usual SecuROM disc-checking that we have in tonnes of games prior to this. There are NO LIMITED ACTIVATIONS. I'm a big anti-DRM person, just look at my posts for Spore, but this, in my opinion, is an acceptable use of DRM and I recommend people get the game.

I picked up 'Darksiders' on it's release date (yesterday) and while I have not yet completed it, I wanted to drop in a quick review so others would have something to consider before parting with your hard-earned cash.In case you know nothing about the game, the basic premise is that you play as War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.Seems War answered the call that the seventh seal had been broken but was then accused of starting the Apocalypse himself.The law of the Council was violated and in an effort to clear his name, War is permitted to return to figure out exactly what happened.You first start the game with quite a few powers but of course, you will lose them soon enough and have to start rebuilding as War works to clear his name and discover the truth.The plot isn't exactly stellar but it's unique enough to keep your interest and at least seems to have a point.

Now onto the appearance of the game:
The graphics take full advantage of the PS3 with bright colors and less of a washed out look that seems to be prevalent in many action games.The voice work is top notch and the same is true of the musical score and general sound effects. The characters look interesting and unique and you'll see everything from demons, zombies and angels.War himself looks nice and has very fluid movement.He looks heavy and sounds that way when he moves...which isn't to say that the movements are awkward or clumsy, just solid.He doesn't flit around like the Prince of Persia...I mean come on, he's War.

If you're expecting a 'God of War' type game there are similarities to be sure however the mechanics of 'Darksiders' are not quite as sophisticated.You could play as a button masher though there are combos to master which will improve your score and playing experience.The finishing moves found in the 'GOW' games (you know when the circle button appears and then you press the various button or joystick combos as they appear on the screen) are primarily reduced to a circle icon and once you press the button, War mostly just handles things by himself.I don't really feel this detracts from the game to be honest.

The game controls are easy to learn and intuitive.You collect souls which can be used as currency, wrath points or health.You level up and obtain more abilities that are tied to your weapon, combo moves, health, etc.War's weapon is one big a$$ sword to be sure and he handles it like a champ. As you progress on your journey, you will achieve more and more weapon abilities and skills which really add to the game playing experience overall.

The atmosphere of the game is first rate.The developers obviously dedicated a great deal of time and attention to the details and it really paid off.Cars, buildings, creatures, all of it, look realistic, (well as realistic as a freaky demon can look).The game gets increasingly better as it progresses...in fact, though you'll have a blast during the first 45 - 60 minutes of the game, it is probably the weakest portion at least in my experience so far.As you move through the game, the areas, enemies, your weapons and abilities get bigger and better.The story line keeps things moving and you want to see what comes next. There are quite a few puzzles as you move through the game, most are simple though a few can be frustrating.

Again, I have not yet finished this game but so far, I have to say I am quite pleased with it and feel it is definitely worth the purchase and is one of the better PS3 games I've played.I've yet to find any glitches or issues in the PS3 version.If you like action-adventure games with puzzle elements, you are probably going to like this one as well.

As to the games: It's Fallout. By this point, one shouldn't need a review of the games. They're amongst the best games of all time (Tactics excluded), and no recommendation can be high enough. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.

However! Something has to be said about the reliability of the games. First: you likely will need to crack Fallout Tactics. For whatever reason, in Vista, the game does not recognize the CD as being a game CD. Thankfully, gamecopyworld.com is still a bountiful resource for safe No-CD cracks.

Also, from what I've heard of friends' experiences with this collection, some of the bugs that Fallout and Fallout 2 experience on WinXP are serious enough to ruin the game experience. For what it's worth, Vista has had no game-breaking issues with any of the collection so far.

There are, however, odd graphical glitches (the game screen has a tendency to suddenly go black; saving when this happens clears up the issue), and certain still-unresolved gameplay bugs that amount to minor annoyance.

Greater on the annoyance scale is that the games *still* bother you to register them despite both Interplay and Black Isle no longer existing, and the publisher of this collection, GSP, seems to have their own agenda trying to push a "register and get a free game" thing. Once again, individually small issues that add to the larger annoyance factor.

Bottom Line: It's Fallout. Play it. Sure, there are some annoying technical issues, but lets be realistic. It's Fallout.

War...War never changes.But Fallout has over the course of its long-winded history.

It started as a spiritual sequel to 'Wasteland', CRPG that started 'Post-Apocalyptic' gameplay back in 1988 by Interplay, whose division Black Isle is behind seminal CRPG classic such as 'Baldur's Gate' and yes, you guessed it, 'Fallout' and 'Fallout 2'.

After Interplay was disintegrated, some of the people went to Bioware, some of them went on to found Troika, talented but unfortunate developer who met its demise after three original and interesting but very buggy CRPG with dissimal sales.Some of them went on to found Obsidian, yet another talented but somewhat disappointing developer whose track record includes 'Knights of the Old Republic 2','Neverwinter Nights 2', 'Alpha Protocol' and upcoming 'Dungeon Siege 3'.

Why am I reciting a history lesson here?When Bethesda acquired the right for 'Fallout' IP from Interplay and released its biggest financial success yet with 'Fallout 3', fans were divided into two distinctive factions and has been feuding over which is better.

Faction Red: Bethesda ruined the memory of the greatest CRPG of all time by dumbing down everything we loved about our precious franchise.It's 'Oblivion with guns'.

Faction Blue: Bethesda successfully resuscitated the dead franchise by streamlining many archaic elements and implementing new refreshing elements.It retains all the core elements from 'Fallout'.We love it.

I personally love all of them and none of them are perfect to feud over petty differences in semantics.

After court-feuding over who's got the right to the entire 'Fallout' series, Bethesda settled with the right to all future single-player Fallout game and right to license the right to Interplay to the development of 'Fallout MMORPG'.So both 'Fallout 4' and 'Fallout Online' are coming; both will be published by Bethesda and 'Fallout 4' will be also developed by Bethesda.

So with the help of creative minds behind the original 2D isometric Fallout games using the same engine and costruction set Bethesda did for FO3, can Obsidian right the wrong by Bethesda?(Bethesda still owns the IP and publishes it.)That has been the question by Faction Red.

If you are a fan of 'Fallout 3', rest assured FONV is exactly like FO3 with nothing taken away with some newly improved elements added.You will feel right at home with the game.Control, menu, movement, combat, Pipboy and VATS are all identical.What's added are new perks system, new aiming system and new NPC companion command system.

Unlike FO3, there are tons more factions now in play and you can choose to side with certain faction with consequences.Faction dynamics play much more intimate and important role, and are tied directly to the choices you have to make (think Morrowind).You cannot possibly satisfiy everyone in FONV.You'll have to actually play multiple playthrough to experience everything.Choices you make will definitely make the differrence in character interaction and will give out whopping 27 unique important quests all littered with different endings with each ending giving you various permutations (think Gothic and The Witcher), unlike the cookie-cutter, same-difference 5 endings FO3 offered.Every time you make someone beneficiary, you will make someone else unhappy.All of your choices will resullt in some type of consequences.There is no more good and evil morality play here.This time, it is a wild wild west.Everyone is a cutthroat.In fact, style of the game is reminiscent of old western movie and FO3 rolled into one.

Dialogues are much more sarcastic and darkly humorous.Voice-works are well-done by many celebrities.Characters are wackier.General tone of the game is morally even murkier and overall darker, albeit humorous on par with the first two games (especially Fallout 2).

Soundtrack once again retains the signature feel of the series by utilizing slew of retro 40s and 50s classic pop music.Orchestral score is once again done by Inon Zur.

While level-cap has been increased to 30, leveling up needs more attention because you cannot be a jack of all trade in FONV; especially in light of new 'Hard-core' mode that is included in the game.You need to hunt and cook / harvest / steal and eat, you need to drink and you need to sleep to survive or pay the consequence.You cannot carry infinite amount of ammo either.You can freely choose whether you want to play as 'Hard-core'.

You can now mod your own weapons on the work bench with more variety and freedom than you were able to in FO3.

Graphics are still competent but are aging fast now.The general tone of the color scheme is changed from green to orange.While Obsidian claims graphic is slightly improved, I think graphically everything looks little bit uglier overall, probably stemming from mismatched color schemes throughout the environment.Sometimes, the world feels like messy crayon artwork from kindergarten wall.But the world is much livelier and you now see some level of active civilization represented by glowing neons of Vegas Strip.

So it sounds like I am trashing FO3 and praising FONV to no end.Not so fast.FO 3 is still a great game but I like FONV slightly better in terms of the improved gameplay.However, FO3 is much better in depth of contents, presentation and storytelling.Morrowind and Oblivion is still my king of CRPG with much stronger community support.So what is wrong with the game?

Welcome to the bugfest 2010.It's a grand feast of technical mess; frame rate stuttering issue, game crashing and freezing, characters stuck in the environment, disappearing act of characters and items (even save-game files make the cameos in the act) are some of the widely reported bugs across the all platforms.Yes, CRPG and nonlinear, free-formed, open-ended game in gigantic scope as big as FONV will always be buggier than linear, focused games like Halo and Modern Warfare due to virtually impossible task of QA stemming from endless in-game possibilities, and yes, nothing gamebreaking,But there are tons of minor glitches that are annoying and tiresome when you play the game that gives you anywhere from 40-200 hours and upward.This is the buggiest Fallout entry.

Another thing is everything in FONV is awfully familiar with FO3, not necessarily a bad thing in itself.Just don't expect the same kind of awe-inducing wow moment like when you came out of Vault 101 for the first time in FO3 or cinematic end-battle.

If you are not a fan of CRPG or you hated FO3, there's nothing new for you to see here.Just like FO3, this is not a FPS, even with enhanced aiming mechanics.Hit points and damage are governed by your stats.This game will be just as boring as FO3 to you.

If you are a fan of open-world game such as GTA, be warned; FONV is not a open-world action game.It is open-ended, nonlinear, free-formed CRPG that focuses on traversing and finding new places, engaging with different characters, performing quests, dungeon-crawling and "role-playing".There are tons of small, interesting and quite often excellent depiction of personal conflicts and backstories, but there's no 'save the humanity' type of grand plot and cinematic cutscenes between each level.

And if you think 'Borderlands', which is by the way solid and entertaining action game, is better than FO3, stay away from FONV.Customization of stats, leveling up, armors and weapons by themselves do not make action game like 'Borderlands' a RPG.You'll be wondering why your excellent marksmanship repeatedly proven via endless hours of online multiplayer session is not effective in Nevada / Mojave wasteland.

Last, but not least, PC version of FONV utilizes Steam, which is the most popular DRM and the least intrusive DRM currently available in the market.It offers many incentive, convenience and great pricing for older games compared to other DRM, but Steam is still DRM.Convenience of not having to worry about the actual gamedisc by using Steam is nothing compared to not having any DRM so we can install the game and put away our game for display and collection.We won't be worrying about gamedisc if DRM doesn't check the disc every five second during the gameplay if the disc is authentic in the first place.Dual release with non-Steam version after initial release or guaranteed future DRM deactivation patch will surely pacify every morally just legitimate paying customers who genuinely want to support developers but are turned off by hands-on DRM.

So why did I still choose PC version over console version?;GECK, easier patching and community support, because I expected that game like FONV would always be buggy.To Bethesda's credit, the game looks and plays exactly the same on either PC or console, barring framerate, graphics and resolution, so the experience will be identical unlike other CRPGs like 'Dragon Age: Origins', 'Two Worlds', 'Sacred 2', 'Divinity II', and 'Risen' on consoles to name a few.

But to Steam's credit, it's 'one-time only' activation through Steam and it doesn't require for you to keep the disc running in your optical drive once the game is installed.There's no constant Internet connection requirement while you play your game and there's no installation limit.And if you are into social-networking aspects of Steam, you won't have much problems.But if you are turned off by anything other than disc-based DRM, you are warned.I found myself grudgingly and reluctantly giving up to the spell of Fallout series this time but this is only...Read more›

Fallout 3 fans won't be disappointed!

Game starts off brilliantly, it sinks it's hooks into you and doesn't let go. In New Vegas you'll find wide open spaces much like Fallout 3, however the areas are more lively and interesting. The people you come across seem to have more depth than those in FO3. The main quest line in New Vegas is much larger than FO3's and isn't nearly as linear and the story telling along the way is just superb. The choices available run the course of the game, not just towards the end, and every choice is important and carries consequences or rewards. The weapon modding system is fantastic and really allows you to tailor a weapon that is right for your character, whether it be a hardcore mercenary or a silver tongued trader. The VATS system is very crisp, the companion feature makes it much easier to manage and utilize your friends.

Customization of your character is still somewhat stale with no real changes from FO3 which was a little disappointing however for some this could be considered trivial. With my experience so far the game has remained stable, I've experienced a few glitches and one crash so far as well as noticing a few bugs. Mainly NPCs falling through the floor :(

Overall any fan of Fallout 3 will enjoy this game very much. Even those who have never experienced any of the Fallout titles will enjoy hours upon hours of fun and enjoyable gameplay!

I play a lot of different RPG's and was not a fan of Elder Scrolls Oblivion.I will list the pros and cons as impartially as possible so you can be the judge on what matters to you.

PROS:

-You are left to explore and find things to do and quests on your own.This game is a true RPG.You have one main quest.Everything else are side quests.

- Over 100+ hours of places to explore. and more than 100+ unique map locations.

- Tons of perks and ways to develop your character.Become a science genius or concentrate on stealth and your lockpicking ability.Invest in large guns and go into places with guns ablaze.Play the game how you want.Be good and people will love you, be bad and people will fear you.

- Replay value.This is rare in RPGs but Because of the many different ways you can play the game I see myself playing this game again to play a different type of character.

- Some people complain about the targeting system known as VATS.This game is not an FPS.VATS gives you a wonderful 1st person shooter feel with an RPG style or turned based combat.Score a critical by shooting your enemies head and it might explode.Shoot the enemy on his weapon hand and he will not be able to attack you very quickly.

- The graphics are amazing.Its a beautiful post apocalyptic mess.The detail from the stains on a found mattress or a found comic called "Grognak the Barbarian and the Lair of the Virgin Killer" are all amazing.You can tell a lot of thought went into detail.

- The voice work is nice.Almost every character talks out loud.This allows you to listen and respond instead of just watching a mouth move and reading dialog all the time.

- Enemies do not automatically level with your character.This was my biggest problem with Oblivion.Some people liked the fact that enemies would always be your level.I found it totally unrealistic.Go ahead, run your level 1 character through the Wastelands.You might come across an easy roach or a mutant with a minigun.In my book this makes the game more fun and much more realistic.

-I have read on the forums and some bad reviews here that they can not find tons of ammo.This is not Halo, Call of Duty or any other FPS.People need to take the right mindset.This is a world 200 years after major Nuclear war.Things will break, ammo is sometimes scarce, radiation is a fact of life, bottle caps are money, people trade everything and you live in a harsh world.I think some people need to watch the Madmax series just as a primer to understand the world created here.

- Instant travel.Once you have visited an area you no longer need to walk to the location.You can locate the area on your map (through the PIPBoy 3000) and select it to instantly travel.

- The PipBoy 3000 Interface works great.This allows you to keep track of stats, items, equipment, quests, notes, maps, and karma very easily.The UI is easy and it keeps all the data you need at your finger tips.

CONS:

- AI is nothing special.It's not bad, just nothing special.When I am shooting a shotgun at you, running at me with a pool cue might not be the smartest thing to do.They will sometimes run away if severely over matched (which is the smart thing to do).The AI is no worse then any other games, just no big improvements here.

- Lack of good music.You can find radio stations on your PIPBoy but I was not a fan of the music.The background can be ok but not great.Sometimes when alone in the Wasteland you want some good background music.

- I had the game crash once but not a lot of times like some people are reporting.Still unacceptable but manageable.Loading and saving times can take anywhere between 10-30 seconds which is kind of slow.

- No item descriptions.The important data like weight, condition value, and perks of the item are still displayed but full description of the items are no longer available.This is different then Fallout 1 and 2 where each item had a paragraph describing it.

Additional thoughts:

This game is rated "M".This means you shouldn't play this game with kids in the room.This isn't a Con for me but this might be a problem for all you gamer mom and dads out there.Seriously, no kids allowed.Women offer there "Services", cussing, blood splatter on the screen when you get injured, mutants hanging people on meat hooks, tons of drug use, and of course blowing peoples limbs off.Good times but not for the kiddies.

No, its not perfect but it is a lot of fun and the best RPG currently on the market.My 5 star review was based on that fact.This is the best RPG I have played since FFX (Final Fantasy X).I hope you enjoy it.

Broken Steel does for Fallout 3 what the Extended Editions did for Lord of the Rings: by adding more and deeper content it makes you care more and feel like things have properly been resolved. Plus, after the dramatic, explosion-packed finale, you get to play on as long as you like with a raised level cap.

Point Lookout adds a huge swampy area for you too look around with plenty to see and do. The quest is fun and interesting and there are some great characters and locations. It's a great Fallout add-on, but those who enjoyed Bethesda's Shivering Isles and Morrowind will enjoy the landscape too.
